Re: Wintec wide saddles
This message is from: Karen Keith kkke...@hotmail.com I recently bought a Wintec Wide for my younger Fjord mare. I started her in a Wintec Isabel saddle with the widest gullet that I use on my other Fjord mare, but it never was a good fit and then as she started developing muscles and a top line, it no longer fit at all and was rolling on her. I bought the Wide at a Memorial Day sale and used it a few times and then took it to Fjord Fest in NC where I put 30 trail miles on and probably 9 hrs of lessons. The horse seems very comfortable in it, and the big surprise for me is that it's narrower in the twist than my old Wintec Isabel, so much more comfortable for me. My two mares are very different types. The one who wears the old Wintec Isabel is a big 14.2 hh 1200 lb chunk, and the one who wears the Wide is a 13.2 hh 900 lb sporty type. Go figure. Bottom line: I am very happy with my Wintec Wide, and more important, my horse is, too. I am a horse lover and am keen to see the equestrian units, but I am particularly interested in seeing the Norwegian Fjordhorses that will be in the parade. (Parade order #79). This is the first time Norwegian Fjords have been in this parade. They are unique in both looks and character, and I think your audience will find them charming. I speak from experience as I am the proud (and charmed) owner of two Fjords myself. Please don't cut away to commercials when equestrian units arrive. You may be surprised how many people tune in just to get a glimpse of the horse entries, and this year there will be even more as devoted Fjord fans will be glued to their TVs hoping for a glimpse of their favorite breed of horse. Additionally, the Norwegian Fjordhorse will hold particular interest to thousands of children this year as a Fjord is featured in the newest animated Disney film, Frozen, opening over Thanksgiving. You can see photos of and find out about Fjordhorses on the Norwegian Fjordhorse Registry website, www.nfhr.com. I also found a great deal of info about the Fjord unit at media.roseparade.net. Re: Rasp
This message is from: Karen Keith kkke...@hotmail.com It's the sharpness of the rasp. I, too, started out with an old rasp from my farrier. But there was a reason she gave it away. It was pretty much used up. Then I bought a rasp from my local tack shop, Diamond brand. It was okay, still not very sharp, and I thought there must be something better. I'm lucky enough to live within 30 minutes' drive of a farrier supply store, so I recently stopped in there and got a rasp (don't know the brand) and it is nice and sharp and makes a world of difference. I also bought the mini rasp for miniature horses. Should have saved my money. Nice idea to make a shorter rasp for working under their short little legs, but the mini rasp doesn't have the sharp cutting edges of the other rasp. Last year I bought a Rider's Rasp, thinking that would be helpful in maintaining the mustang roll. Eh, not really much good. I like the idea of the Radius Rasp, especially that you can change out the blade. I see it's on sale, so maybe I'll give that one a go for keeping the mustang roll neat. If I do, I'll let you know. The other item I'd like is a Hoof Jack. Would like to just buy the one for minis, since I have one little guy, but need to find out first if it will stand up to the weight of a Fjord as well. Right now I'm holding hooves against my thigh, but would prefer the stability of any kind of hoof stand. I like the Hoof Jack because it comes with both the post and the little sling for holding hooves up. Be sure to wear gloves when rasping hooves, especially if you get a good sharp rasp. I like the knit cotton gloves with the nitrile coated palm. I keep them for all manner of barn and yard work. They're cheap, and give good protection without being bulky. I had to add the power strap to the front, and they stay on great now. I do have to keep the hooves rasped and rolled myself between farrier visits as they do fit like a glove and don't tolerate the six or eight weeks of growth between farrier visits. I also have the Backcountry boots. It's the same shell as the Glove, but they've added the upper wrap around stuff like the Trails. Just a different option; I suppose more protection in rough going. Re: Is there a dun coastal inlet?! Shame on Alex and his writers!
This message is from: Karen Keith kkke...@hotmail.com Additionally, the points on a bay horse are black, not brown. The agouti gene deals with the distribution of black, not brown, to the points (mane, tail, lower legs, tips of ears). Occasionally you will find a bay horse that has a very pale coat to the point where you might wonder if it's a bay or buckskin. Sometimes it's due to a sunburned coat, sometimes it's just a light shade of bay and sometimes it's a bit of both. But it's certainly not the norm. Shame on Jeopardy for not getting it right. The bay horse body color has a wide range of shades ranging from a horse that looks nearly black to the more common shades of red-browns and oranges and even an occasional tan. This is why, in my opinion, we have the different shades of brown dun in our Fjordies. Our brown duns are bays first, but the dun gene dilutes whatever shade of bay is present. Similarly, chestnut horses come in a wide range of shades and even point colors, and when the dun gene is present, you get a range of red dun shades as well. And just to stir things up on a related topic. My pet peeve is seeing references to the rare red dun gene, or grey dun gene, or white dun gene, or yellow dun gene. There's is no such thing. The dun gene is the same gene in each case (well, the white dun and yellow dun have an additional and separate dilute in play as well). The dun gene is simply diluting the base color of the horse. Brown dun = bay+dun. Red dun = chestnut+dun. Grey dun =black+dun. White dun = bay+dun+creme. Yellow dun = chestnut+dun+creme. (The creme gene is a dilute which creates palominos and buckskins in ordinary breeds. Palomino = chestnut+creme. Buckskin = bay+creme. So technically our white duns are buckskin duns, and our yellow duns are palomino duns.) The Fjord colors other than brown dun are only rare because of human selection. Re: sale of horses, Private Treaty
This message is from: Karen Keith kkke...@hotmail.com Dont claim to be smarter than Fred, but I did go looking on Google. Here's what it says at http://horses.about.com/od/glossaryofhorsetermsp/g/privatetreaty.htm Definition: A private treaty is an agreement or contract between a buyer and a seller or between a stallion and a mare owner. The agreement is made directly between the parties involved. Breeders or sellers may wish to use a private treaty when they offer different terms for different situations. For example, a breeder may offer their stallion's services to purebreds, part-breds orgrade mares, or mares of a specific type or bloodline at different rates. This allows the stallion owner some control over the type of mares they will breed their stallion too. Mares that they favor may be serviced at a lower cost to the mare owner, than those they consider a less desirable match for their stallion. I guess the partbred and grade mare stuff doesn't apply to fjords, but you get the idea. Different terms for different situations. Karen, No. VA My answer is only a guess: Private Treaty...asking and selling price not revealed?? Now, somebody smarter than I am: answer the question... Fjord in Rhinelander, WI
This message is from: Karen Keith kkke...@hotmail.com Are there any Fjord folks in or around Rhinelander, WI? There is a new Fjord owner in the area who got a young (4yo) gelding (not yet registered) from a rescue organization, along with a mule. New owner has chosen clicker training. She is new to horses but has background in CT with dogs. She has described behaviours of the Fjord which sound pretty normal for a bright, take-charge kind of horse personality. Kind of like a border collie, but the trouble is the personality is a bit overwhelming in a thousand pound package. The mule does not seem to be any problem for her, just the Fjord. Is there anyone in the area knowledgeable of the amazing Fjord mind who may be able to give some advice? I'm a little concerned that this gelding may end up labeled as a bad or sent to a trainer who may rough him up, or back in a rescue situation without some guidance. War Horse, on stage in NYC
This message is from: Karen Keith kkke...@hotmail.com Yesterday morning I woke up and picked up my iPad to peruse my emails. I saw Carol Rivoire's post to the CD-L about seeing War Horse in London and mentioning it's playing in NYC. Well, I just happened to be in a hotel in NY and no firm plans for the evening (my husband was attending a 2-day business conference and I just came along for the adventure of the big city), so I scrambled to get tickets to see War Horse at the Vivian Beaumont Theater at the Lincoln Center, right across the street from The Juilliard School. I was worried the seats wouldn't be great. We were way over to the right about halfway up the orchestra level, but as it turned out, I don't think there's a bad seat in the house. Even better, the actors use the aisleways, and my husband and I were seated right next to one. Joey the horse came right by us a couple of times. The puppetry was fantastic. The horses are very believable and you can definitely respond to them as living beings. And maybe that's why I left the theater a bit disappointed. While I loved the horse characters, I just could not warm up to the human characters. The boy, Albert, who raised Joey from a foal, was such a wimp. He spent way too much time on his hands and knees whining and beseeching Joey to calm down, or learn to pull a plough. Any time Joey got upset, there was Albert throwing himself to the ground to calm him. Yikes! Not a training technique I would employ. When Albert was given the task of teaching Joey to pull a plough in seven days (as part of a drunken bet by his drunk of a father, another unlikable character), Albert stood directly in front of Joey, explaining the urgency of learning this task or being lost in the bet, and he emphasized his words by jerking the reins down over and over. Ouch! Maybe if the dadgum puppets weren't so believable I wouldn't have been bothered by this, but it just made me cringe! Perhaps I'm just a cretin from the country and don't understand the theater arts. Also, Joey is described as a hunter, half TB, half draught (I assume what we call an Irish Sporthorse today), but for some reason they portray his pulling a plough as beyond the ability of this type of horse. Although I never asked my ISH to pull anything, he certainly had the brain, temperament and substance to do the job. But that being said, I'm glad to have seen War Horse on stage. Now I want to get hold of the book and read it before the movie comes out. In summary, if you have the chance, go see the stage performance. Just plan ahead so you don't have to buy your tickets from a reseller at the last minute and pay a good deal more than the face value. Ticket resellers have websites and are legal; ticket scalpers work the sidewalk outside an event and have to dodge the law. Go figure. I'm back home in VA now, but did enjoy my little sojourn to the city. BTW, the absolute best bang for the buck (pun intended) in NYC is the dollar I dropped in the Naked Cowboy's guitar in Time Square. He's absolutely adorable, gives kisses, and surprisingly, not the least bit creepy. I have photos! :^) Cheers! FJORDS ROCK! or Our First Horse Show
This message is from: Karen Keith kkke...@hotmail.com Brag Alert! Wow, I've waited a long time to get to write an email like this. But today was one of those days where you just want to let someone (everyone) know. Today was the day I took my Bella (Nor-Fin's Ellen) to her first horse show. We have been doing a lot of trail riding and also participating in musical rides (kind of quadrille stuff) with my local riding club since the start of the year, but I thought this low-level fun show would be a good test to see how Bella would do with strange horses (and colorful jumps) in an outdoor arena. I plan to show Bella at the Small Draft Festival in Virginia (being held in connection with the eval in July), and I just wanted to expose her to a show situation. My dear Bella did not disappoint. She wasn't the least bit fazed at being among all the strange horses and ponies. She was the only Fjord, and of course she got lots of comments and compliments. The show was held at a hunter facility, and all the other horses were TBs, TB crosses (field hunter types) and hunter ponies. Bella was certainly the odd man out. We entered five classes, two in hand and three ridden. All the ground work and liberty work I do with Bella paid off in droves in hand. We took 2nd in the halter/conformation class, and I have no doubt that had to do, in part, with the fact that Bella will really trot out in hand. I hadn't done much of this with her since her eval two years ago, but we have done other in hand work, and when I asked her to go, she did. As soon as I knew she was right there with me, I lengthened my stride to really show that she can and will move. The second class was showmanship, where we had to perform a pattern -- a circle right at trot, stop, quarter turn left, then back up, and stand for presentation. We placed 1st in showmanship. Woo hoo! We entered three ridden classes -- Greenie Hack W/T, Greenie Hack W/T/Back up, and Greenie Hack W/T/Individual Canter. I told you this was a low-level show. :^) And don't worry, I was not the only grownup in there mowing down Pony Clubbers. Not that anyone mowed down Pony Clubbers; in fact, it was we adults who had to watch out for kids on ponies. They seem to be quite unaware that there is anyone else in the ring. But the class was mostly adults on big honking hunters, and me on my golden pony. In the walk/trot class, I mostly worked with Belle to try to get her bending properly. That horse loves to drop a shoulder and bulge through her corners. So I was pleasantly surprised at placing 4th. In the walk/trot/back up class, it was pretty much more of the same, I continued working on her bending and softening to my inside rein. Her back up was a bit slow, but without all that unsightly (and gotta be uncomfortable) pulling on her mouth. I wasn't surprised at her less than exuberant response to the back up since she had been standing there quite relaxed awaiting her call to back. I will have to think about how to bring up her energy in prep for backing without first getting a forward step. Anyone have any ideas? I was completely surprised when we were called as 1st place. I think that judge must have liked my Fjordie. Finally we came to the walk/trot/individual canter class. This one was W/T/W, reverse direction, W/T/W, then line up nose to tail at the end of the arena and strike off at a canter one at a time to canter around on the rail for about 3/4 of the ring, rejoining the back of the line. Now this may not seem like a big deal, but canter departs and just cantering in a ring are something I had just introduced to Bella. When I first got Belle, she definitely had some anxiety about the canter. Last summer and this year, we have been throwing some canter into our trail rides, and with encouragement and generally good experiences, her anxiety has subsided. She is learning to enjoy moving out with her trail buddies. However, in a riding ring it was a different story. She would get rushy and strung out. So instead of allowing that to become ingrained, I specifically went to an instructor who teaches canter from the walk. She says it's easier for the horse to organize her feet for canter from walk rather than trot, and I believe she's right. It certainly looks a lot nicer. We do a lot of transitions, W/T/Halt/T/W etc., and when asking for canter, it's from trot, transition to walk for two or three steps, canter. The trot creates the energy, while the few walk steps allow her to organize her feet before striking off. Initially, Belle was still skeptical, and my aids were less than fluid, but with a bit of encouragement with a whip tap, a buck from Belle as she leapt into canter, and lots of praise for her try, she has come around nicely in just two lessons and a bit of work at home. Which brings me back to today's show. When it was Bella's turn to leave the group (psychologically difficult for the horse to leave the herd), she took

You never know what you'll find, but for me it's usually some kitchen widget I never knew existed but absolutely can't live without. This time it was a set of two cake pans in the shape of a dala horse, one large and one small. Just had to have it, and I've already given it a test drive (or would that be ride?), and made brownies in the large pan. Worked great. Not sure what you can do with the little pan since it is a single serve size. That would be a long day of baking individual mini cakes one at a time. I suppose you could bake one and put it on top of a regular layer cake. Or maybe just attach a hanger and use it as a Christmas tree ornament. The pans are red. But I thought some on the list might be interested. I haven't figured out how to insert a web link with this iPad yet, but if you google dala horse cake pan, you will find the IKEA link. It's only $9.99. Can't beat it for a bit of horsey whimsy. I also saw three carved wood dala horses, about 16 inches high, on display with wreaths around their necks. Hunted down an IKEA employee to see if they were for sale, but no joy. She said they sold them about two years ago and they flew out the door. Duh! This store kept these three for display, and people ask all the time. Double duh! Hey, IKEA, I think you're missing a marketing opportunity here. Cheer! Silent Auction at NFHR conference
This message is from: Karen Keith kkke...@hotmail.com I just finished a knitting project, an afghan, which I am donating to the silent auction being held at the NFHR conference this weekend. Date: Fri, 19 Jun 2009 08:54:47 -0700 This message is from: plumg...@pon.net plumg...@pon.net We impulse bought a 2 horse bumper pull trailer at the Sacramento Expo last weekend. It is designed to go with our new (old...1995) Lance Camper and allow us to visit Fjord friends and make pests of ourselves by bringing our horses and camping out in their backyards. :) While talking with the Silverlite rep, we realized that our insurance is unlikely to pay us adequately for our 1997 aluminum Silverlite trailer if we should have it stolen or wrecked completely. We paid about $14500 for it. THe rep said it is worth $28K, and the aluminum in it is pretty valuable as well. Also, we store all of our tack in it. So...I decided we need to get a gooseneck lock for it that works when it is off the truck and sitting in our yard. Anyone have experience with gooseneck lock types? I want something that is easy to apply, will not corrode, and works. It looks like the Guardian lock is probably the best thing..so far. My herd is complete
This message is from: Karen Keith kkke...@hotmail.com This is a not so quick update for those who know me. My herd is now complete, with the arrival of Nor-Fin's Ellen, a 7yo brown dun , bought from Sally Kjorsvig in South Dakota. Ellen, who has been rechristened Bella, arrived in Virginia about two weeks ago at 9 p.m. in the middle of a terrific thunderstorm and downpour. So bad that the transporter had to stop in a grocery store parking lot just three miles from the house because he couldn't see to drive. But Bella got off the trailer and went to her stall with no dramas. The next morning Bella got her first real look at her new roommates, Bo the 31 mini and Fia the white dun yearling. Fia was no problem, but when Bella saw Bo, her eyes bugged out of her head, she spun around and hid behind the barn for a day and a half. Pretty funny when you consider she outweighs Bo by a factor of 5x. I guess spending seven years of life with only Fjords for companions didn't prepare her for other types of equines in the world. But I gave her time to come around on her own, and she now accepts Bo as horse rather than monster. Bo was more puzzled than hurt by Bella's initial rebuff, but then, Bo has no idea he's short or odd looking to some horses. In his mind, he's just right. But I digress. This is about Bella. Bella was a bit flighty for the first several days. She would stand outside her stall with her head in, but felt the need to see and possibly flee any odd sights and noises, of which there are plenty at my barn. The barn is situated 30 meters off a busy secondary road, so there's traffic activity probably 20 hours a day. This must have been a huge change from her former home on South Dakota prairie land. Each day Bella has changed and become more at home. Initially, she was standoffish toward me, preferring to gaze off in the distance. She now greets my arrival at the barn with a nicker and looks to me for interesting input. Of course that includes groceries, but we've also started clicker training and she seems to be very interested. Bella's a funny thing, though, in that she does not recognize food in my hand. But I've found she's happy to work for a reward of the curry comb. So I've started her with some simple give to the bridle work in hand, and her reward is several swirls of a soft rubber curry in all the itchy spots. I just hope she doesn't find out I would have groomed her anyway. :^O But our initial bridle work is returning soft, lovely responses to the reins. Lovin' it! BTW, Bella has had 30 or 45 days of training, but I'm starting her afresh from the ground up. That way she knows exactly what I want and I can see what she knows already. Two days after Bella's arrival, I took her to Margaret Bogie's place for a practice evaluation clinic. I was absolutely pleased with the way she traveled and behaved. It was before she knew me and I knew her, and it could have been a disaster, but the Fjord temperament won out. I did learn that I would have to put some time in to teach her to trot in hand, but I think we'll have that sorted out by the time of the Herndon eval in mid August. Probably won't have her ready for any performance tests, though. Those will have to wait for next year. Now I have my completed herd. Bo is currently in driver's ed, so he will be my driving horse. Fia's job at the moment is to grow up, so the work we do is ground manners and just odd ball things I can think of. And Bella will be my riding horse for now. I'll spend some time assessing her temperament to see if she's a driving candidate as well. All I know is she will not fit in the harness from my last Fjord. Bella is a big, buxom girl. We put a stick on her at Margaret's and she measured out at 14.2hh. I've checked her girth with a weight tape, and it measures at 1255 pounds. She's a touch overweight, but not much, and I expect she'll come just right once she starts to work. Bella has a big, active walk and is a bit more goey than many Fjords. I'm looking forward to channeling her energy into dressage and jumping, and hopefully we will be foxhunting this fall. Fingers crossed. So that's the story of Bella, nee Ellen. And an update on Fia. Fia has been a joy since she arrived in Virginia. She's very much a girly girl, sweet and curious, wants to know everything I'm doing. She always comes to greet me and still lifts her nose to my face as she did the first day we met. She's gentle and delicate in her touches, and she always makes me smile. I think my husband is getting tired of hearing me say, Isn't she pretty? as we drive in or out of the property. Fia, too, enjoys the attention of a curry comb but feels compelled to return the favor with wither rubs. That's when I get Bo to move into Fia's range so she can fulfill her compulsion on his horse hide rather than my delicate human hide. Bo, on the other hand, is perfectly happy to receive and simply arch

RE: Feeding fjords
This message is from: Karen Keith kkke...@hotmail.com You can get a fish scale from any sporting goods place (Walmart works). They range from the simple spring operated one to fancy electronic ones. I've had both. The electronic one didn't hold up well in an unheated barn through Colorado winters. I still have the little spring one. I hung the scale from a beam in the barn (baling twine works nicely here). Add a plastic laundry basket suspended from, again, baling twine. Fill the basket with estimated hay, hang the basket via baling twine to the hook on the bottom of the scale and -- voila! -- you've got your hay weighed. The electronic scale allows you to tare the scale with the weight of the basket. The spring one requires you weigh the empty basket and remember its weight, then subtract that number from the weight when filled with hay. As I recall, the difference in price for the convenience is the difference between about $5 and about $40. You decide. Cheers! Karen, Northern VA Just a quick question on this weighing of hay. What do you all use for a scale I'm guessing some sort of a hanging scale but would love more detail on how you do it. _ Looking for a fresh way to share photos? RE: Import Bashing - Was CEM and Supporting American Fjord Breeders
This message is from: Karen Keith kkke...@hotmail.com For those who care, here goes. What attracted me to this unproven foreign youngstock? I wanted a white dun. That narrows the field drastically, as I'm sure you know, Bonnie, having been there yourself. So much for thousands of Fjords. Even at thousands, what percentage are for sale at any given time? Being able to look outside our borders increases the possibilities. With my foreign import, I was able to visit the farm and see several white duns from foals at side to yearlings, 2yos, 3yos, on up to the sire. I like having choice. I guess that's clear in my previous post. :^) I was able to have it in spades. Additionally, Eike and Suse Schoen-Petersen are long-time Fjord breeders, incredibly knowledgeable of international Fjord bloodlines, great conversationalists and just plain good folk. If you ask Eike a question, you're definitely going to get a full, complete and thoughtful answer and learn way more than you ever expected, whether it's Fjords, cattle, pigs, veterinary, Germany and Europe in general, and even the US. Good fun. Am I a breeder? I guess that depends on how this unproven foreign youngstock works out. But no, not up to now. Am I touchy? Yes, I suppose so. I've just made a huge purchase, some might say a gamble but all horses are a gamble, and I react to terms like unproven imported youngstock. How proven is any weanling horse? I guess we can look to its pedigree and parents' records. My filly's dam placed 1st in her 30-day performance test for Fjord mares as a 5yo in Germany. Okay, that's a plus. Last year, as a 13yo, she was declared overall champion horse at a Fjord show (70 horses) in northern Germany near the Danish border. Another plus. Eike recently regaled us with the results of my filly's sire at both Equitana and the German Jubilee Stallion Show at Essen a month or so ago. Plus, plus, plus. Finally, my filly has a record in her own right. As just a wobbly week-old baby, she scored highest of seven Fjord foals at the Fjord branding. Big fish, small pond, but definitely a plus. Then she went on several weeks later to place second in her filly class at the same show where her mama was champion. Again, plus. So is my import unproven? You bet she is. As was your little guy when you brought him home. What's the difference? A few thousand miles in transport when you come down to it. We have high hopes, but let's face it, all horses are a crapshoot. But she is a white dun, and that's what I wanted. And like you and your little guy, I believe my filly will some day be a positive influence on the gene pool of the American Fjord. Only time will tell. Good luck to us both. Finally, I was told by one American breeder, after hearing I was importing, that I was buying a pig in a poke. That put me off even looking at his stock, and I was in the market for a domestic Fjord as well. Found one last week, by the way, but had to go pretty far afield again, just not outside the country. So now I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my little piggy and her domestic but unproven companion who will act as her nanny while she's growing up. Mike May, I'll be sending my check to join the NFHR today if I can get the printer working. Seems I've got some horses to register, hey? Cheers! Import Bashing - Was CEM and Supporting American Fjord Breeders
This message is from: Karen Keith kkke...@hotmail.com Gee, it's a good thing the Morgan breeders didn't cop an anti-import attitude back in the 50s when the first Fjords were coming to America. I can see the Morgan people saying, Hey, whaddaya need a European all-purpose horse for when we've got the American equivalent right here, at least if you believe the Marguerite Henry Justin Morgan Had a Horse story. It occurs to me, from this piece that you have shared, that the most comprehensive control of this infectious disease is to STOP European importation, is that not correct? After all, every Fjord horse on the planet has an indisputably common ancestry. Therefore, one Fjord is the same as the next, I guess. So with that in mind it makes me wonder why one would buy young unproven stock from another country? When we have plenty to sell here in our own country? I can understand buying a licensed proven breeding animal that is used to improve the current stock, but if I were to buy young stock I would also like to see the my fellow breeders gain from it and keep some of the profits in the USA. Why would one buy from another country? Because it's a free market, we have free choice in the US. God Bless America. You would choose to buy young stock here; I chose to buy young stock overseas. Is this a great country or what? BTW, since keeping the profits in the USA is noted as a goal, I suppose buying young, unproven stock from a Canadian breeder would be verboten as well. Ouch-ka-bibble! Not very neighborly. Do I seem a bit tetchy on this subject? You betcha. It comes along as I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my young, unproven European stock. RE: fjordhorse-digest V2009 #29
This message is from: Karen Keith kkke...@hotmail.com Dear Fjord List: I've been combing the internet for Fjords for sale and came across one that I thought somebody up in the Michigan area or Northern Ohio might be interested in. There's a Fjord mare for sale in Windsor, Ontario, which is apparently close to Detroit. She's owned by a therapy program but she's not working out as a therapy horse. They're asking $2,000 for her and need to find her a new home soon. She might be registered, but the program didn't get her promised papers. She looks cute in her two pictures, sweet face and looks a nice enough type. I just thought someone who is closer to that area might be interested. RE: Truly Crazy Horse Theft
This message is from: Karen Keith kkke...@hotmail.com Dear Gail: You may want to get a driveway alarm to let you know if anyone even starts up your drive. I have used them in both my Colorado property and now my Virginia property and really like being alerted that someone is coming up to the house, long before they get to the front door. Admittedly, the deer sometimes trip it during the night, but the dog has learned not to react to the deer. Go figure. I think with her more acute hearing, she listens for the sound of an engine after the alarm buzzes. She's able to discern my husband's car engine and my son's from other engines as well. It's called Chamberlain Wireless Alert System #RWA-300R by The Reporter. http://tinyurl.com/5txetz (This is the Amazon site) I got my first one at Radio Shack, but you can get them cheaper at Amazon.com. As a matter of fact, I need to order another one to keep in the barn to alert me when I'm there. I can't hear cars from the barn, and that unfortunately, that cost me package delivery from the USPO because my dog had a go at the postie up at the garage while I was down with the horse. No bites, just scared him. Now I get to go pick up my pkgs from the post office the next day. :^( Bad/dangerous neighbors is a scary problem. Stay safe and good luck. RE: Guard Donkeys
This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] I, too, had a donkey. She was from feral stock, but born on a farm. I brought her home at 1-1/2 years old and she walked off the trailer in charge of the world. I was amazed that a youngster of any species could have so much self-assurance in a new environment. I wasn't looking for a guard animal, but she took up the job on her own. Initially, she chased my two dogs, and they quickly learned not to go in the pasture with her. But she eventually accepted my dogs as part of our herd and didn't bother going after them or even alerting when they were in the area. There were even a couple of times over the five years I had the donk where I saw a situation where the dog was trapped, and she didn't take advantage of the situation. Of course, I was sending her Do not stomp my dog thoughts. However, she continued her vigilance with strange dogs. I have a border collie of my own, but I was keeping a friend's border collie for a weekend. I was really surpised to see the donk react and go after this visiting collie when he wandered under the pasture fence, not near us but well down the fence line. Donk took off after him and sent him out of the pasture. I was surprised because I would have thought one black and white BC looked pretty much like another to a donk. No. Donk also used to run the fence line with the neighbor's black lab. The lab thought the donkey was playing with him. Labs think everyone loves them. The donk had her head down and ears pinned and looked for all the world like she wanted to kill. It was a dog-proof fence, but had the lab ever gotten in with donk, it wouldn't have been pretty. The donkey was a wonderful companion for my two Fjords, as well. When I took one off property for shows or other fun, the one left behind always had a friend. When I took both Fjords away for some function, donkey was fine on her own, but always welcomed the horse trailer back with a big hee-haw. And, Jeanne, donkeys are very efficient with their food -- they don't eat much -- so don't let that stop you from adding a longears to your herd! With their usually dun colored coats, they mix very nicely with Fjords. Cheers! RE: More on colours
This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] While we're talking about Fjord colors, has anyone else noticed Paragraphs 8 and 9 of Sponenberg's article in the NFHR site? Sponenberg tells us that the creme gene (he calls it the palomino type gene) is hardly noticeable on the brown dun (he calls it zebra dun) coat, and usually skates through the generations until a kvit pops up. Yikes! Why did I just go all the way to Germany to find a barely discernable white dun?;^) (from Sponenberg's article) In addition to zebra vs mouse dun vs red duns, some Fjord horses also have the palomino type gene. This one is interesting in that it barely betrays itself in most instances. The palomino (or more precisely, the cremello) gene is abbreviated ccr while the absence of it is C . The gene is interesting in that in one dose it lightens red to yellow, but done not affect black. In two doses it lightens all colors to creme with blue eyes. In most zebra dun Fjord horses the cremello gene would cause only a subtle difference in color. These would still be zebra duns, but would be yellower rather that a light orangey tan. Since the breed has been selected to be fairly yellow within the zebra dun group, this difference will be subtle within Fjord horses. On mouse duns the cremello gene in a single dose will be barely be noticed, although it can lighten them somewhat. On red duns it has been it has been a pronounced effect. These have very minimal stripes, are very yellow, and tend to have white points. These are the Fjord equivalent of palomino. In two doses the cremello gene causes zebra duns to be perlino, mouse duns to be silver smokey, and red duns to be cremello. These are all very similarly colored cream horses with blue eyes, perhaps with minimal striping left over from the dun gene. These are called kvit in Norwegian, which translates as white. Whit in English refers to pink skinned white horses with dark eyes, so the translation white should be avoided for these horses since they are not truly white. The cremello gene is really a fun gene that is full of surprises. It is an integral and historic part of the Fjord horse breed and should be considered as such. Due to the uniformity of the breed to be pale zebra duns the cremello gene usually skates on through the generations unnoticed - until it pairs up with itself and results in a ble eyed cream horse. These really should be expected in a very low percentage of mating, and are part of the color heritage of the breed. Cheers! Karen _ Are you paid what you're worth? RE: Fjord coloring ?
This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] If both are gray, the colt will be gray. If one parent is At the risk of being called a know it all (I've been spanked before on this list concerning color), I think the above statement is incorrect, although this is not the first time I've heard it said. Two greys could produce a red, depending on the genetic makeup of each grey. For instance, a horse in the NFHR registry named Veni's Finn is a grey dun whose sire was grey and dam was red. Since Finn is a grey dun (phenotype), we know she carries the grey gene. (I've got quotes around that and will expand in a further paragraph.) We also know that she carries a red gene because red was the only color her red dam had to offer. But red is recessive to the grey gene, so the grey coloring is what she shows the world. Her genotype is both grey and red. Therefore, when Finn is hypothetically bred, she can give her offspring either a grey or red gene. Now, if we find a grey stallion for Finn who has the same genotype (both grey and red), that stallion can give its offspring either a grey or red gene. Therefore, a hypothetical foal out of Finn by a grey stallion with grey/red phenotype could be either grey or red; with the chances being 75% grey and 25% red. Grey bred to grey can produce red, depending on the genotypes. I started looking through the registry to see if I could find a red born of two greys, but there were so many I only got through half a dozen. Maybe someone with more time or interest can have a look. Now, I used quotes above and it's just a pet peeve of mine. So if you don't like soapbox speeches, scroll down now. I think we Fjord people make this color issue way too complicated by referring to and thinking of each Fjord dun color as a separate gene -- a grey gene or a red gene or a white gene, etc. I'm going out on a limb here (but Sponenberg will back me up http://members.aol.com/mfthorses/sponenbg.htm) to say there is no grey gene (or red, or white or even brown). The dun gene dilutes the base color, creating either brown, grey or red duns. The base colors in Fjords are just like the base colors in all horses -- bay, black and chestnut. (Sponenberg doesn't address the base color brown in the initial charts in this website, but Jeanette Gowers of Horse Colour Explained groups bays and browns together as closely related genetically.) The addition of a creme gene further dilutes those three duns and creates the white dun, yellow dun and kvit. So, when someone refers to the grey gene, or a grey dun, it's a base color of black that has been diluted by the dun gene. A red dun is a chestnut base color diluted by the dun gene. A brown dun is a bay or brown base color diluted by the dun gene. One dun gene creates three different dun colors depending on what the base color of the horse is. Finally, I'll go off on complete speculation here as to why there is such a variation in shades of Fjord colors. I go right back to base colors of horses -- bay, black and chestnut. Bays have a wide range of shades from very dark mahogany to light enough to look nearly buckskin. It makes sense to me that when you dilute with dun this varied range of base color bay, you're going to get a varied range of brown duns from dark to pale. Sound reasonable? Okay, enough for now. Take this for what it's worth. I'm not a genetics expert and I never played one on TV. Just spend way too much time thinking about Fjords. :^) Cheers! This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Cherrie: Too funny! The day I decide to climb up on a soapbox about color genetics it's in response to a molecular biologist. LOL! I yield the floor. Perhaps, though, my explanation will be helpful to folks whose brains work like mine. I can muddle through the alleles and capital letters and lower case letters denoting genes, but it really is a muddle for me and hard work. I have to keep going back to charts and reviewing. I see the base horse colors as hues on a color wheel, and the dun and creme dilutions as a tints and tones, creating the lovely dun and creme coats. Does anyone else remember junior high art class? I've been working on a very special vest to take to Norway -- it's got Fjordies on it -- and I posted a pic of the work in progress as well as telling my knitting friends about my upcoming trip. I gave them the Starfire Farm website so they could compare my knitted fjord with photos of the real thing. One of the ladies on the knitting list is Norwegian, and she responded with what follows. I found it charming, and thought others would enjoy reading it. I really hope that you get some nice weather. The scenery down there is very beautiful. I say that even though I don't have first-hand knowledge of it, the closest I've been is Molde, but I've seen lots of pictures. I live not far from Trondheim myself, which is a bit further north. I used to dream of one myself when I was little, but alas, the dream never came true. After a while I sort of lost interest in horses, but two of my cousins are very into horses. Koniks, dun ponies
This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi List. I'm sitting here on a Sunday morning watching the BBC and saw a show about a wildlife preserve near Amsterdam. The reason I found it interesting was they showed a herd of wild horses that were brought there 20 plus years ago from Poland. They are Koniks, which I'd never heard of so had to google. They are particularly interesting as they were almost exclusively grey duns, with a couple of red duns in there as well. Just kind of neat to see a whole herd of silvery-coloured ponies together. And yes, they are reminiscent of Fjordies. Here's a link to the Amsterdam park with a photo of part of the herd but no info on the horses: http://oostvaardersplassen.biofaan.nl/scientificcd/paragraph08.html Here's a link to info about Koniks and some photos: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konik Enjoy the pics. Static while vacuuming horse
This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Bernadine. Working on a dirt surface can be helpful depending on the moisture content in the dirt, so that advice would be good for some situations. When I lived in Colorado I had a barn with a dirt floor, but the climate is very dry there, and the static was a problem even just brushing the Fjordies. I used a shop-vac on both my Fjordies and my donkey, and I learned to do a few strokes of vacuum, then step away and discharge the static on the steel siding of the barn. When brushing or vacuuming a horse, I find I place one hand on the shoulder and brush with the other hand. I can feel the crackling static under the palm of my non-working hand. The horses don't seem concerned with it, but it is a reminder for me to be careful about discharging before I build up too much static. The comment about you being wired I think is valid. I find I'm also electric. Some people just are. In Colorado, I found that I got shocked year round with static discharge just getting out of a car and touching the door to close it. Same thing is happening here in England for the winter. I like to think we electric types are special. :^) As an aside, here's a static-Fjord-God-Bless-the-temperament story. A few years ago I was lucky enough to be part of the Starfire Quadrille, driving Sara, their lovely ulsdun mare. We met for a practice on a wickedly cold and windy day. Sara had just come off the trailer wearing her winter rug. She'd been clipped since the last time I'd seen her, so no thick coat to protect her from electric me. I removed her rug and placed a hand on her rump and --- POP! we both got thoroughly zapped! She levitated straight up in the air. I felt really bad for zapping her, but oh, so thankful for that temperament. If ever a horse had a reason to kick, that was it. But she never offered to kick the fool who'd just taken a cattle prod to her butt! After apologizing profusely to her, I paid extra careful attention to discharging regularly by touching the side of the horse trailer. Brush, brush, brush, discharge. (Repeat as necessary) Hope something in here is helpful. Cheers! Karen, Am in Eng One of the suggestions from the CDL List on Vacuming-put your horse on dirt. Horse holiday in France
This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear List: I wanted to tell you about my April holiday in France. I've finally gotten the photos up at Webshots.com, so I hope you enjoy my trip. Here's the link to the album, http://pets.webshots.com/album/559950949YJPqUH As background for those who don't know me, I'm living in England, having moved here from Colorado last summer. I sold my two Fjords before I left the US. I have a Welsh cob mare I'm working with here two days a week to keep myself sane, but am looking forward to moving back to the US this time next year and filling a couple stalls with Fjords once again. I went to France in April with my husband and son. My husband left the planning up to me, so we ended up on a horse-themed holiday. We stayed at a horse trekking place on the Bay of Somme. The horse trekking place (Marcanterra Sea Ranch) has established a new breed of horse based on the Norwegian Fjord and crossed with native horses (Selle Francais, French trotter, even QH and Spanish horses, Andies and Lusitanos). The purpose is to create a breed of horse good for living and working in their area -- pine forested sand dunes, marsh grasses, hardy enough to live out year round, good temperament for use in commercial trekking operation. They are called Henson horses (I think Henson was the one who started the grand experiment), and they've been breeding them for about 25 years. According to their breed standard, they must carry no less than 25% and no more than 50% Fjord blood. One of their goals is to have all duns, but they've not yet achieved that; although, they did have probably 75 to 80% duns in the several hundred horses I saw. Not sure if that's achieved through breeding or through culling. I saw a handful of colts and stallions, and they were all duns and heavily influenced by the Fjord in type. However, of the broodmares, some were duns, some not. I assume if they're breeding a non-dun, it's because she ticks a lot of the other desireable boxes for the breed standard. I had a grand old time. We stayed in bungalows on the ranch. There were horse paddocks all around, so you just had to step out your door to see horses through the pines. While Marshall and Cam went off on a bike ride, I took the 3-hour experienced horse ride, which would take us out to the Bay of Somme. I assumed this meant I'd get a horse that was a bit goey, not a dead-head, but good for a gallop along the sands of the beach. What it means in French-speak is we'll give you (the experienced rider) one of our youngsters so you can give him a good ride. They put me on a 3-year-old! Not my ideal for a gallop in the surf and sand. Heck, most 3-year-olds don't know where their feet are, much less have good balance in less than optimum footing. And how long could a 3yo have been broke to ride anyway? But when in Rome, yada yada. We did head out on the trail, me with some trepidation, reminding myself over and over that somewhere underneath me, wrapped in long, skinny legs and an ordinary bay coat, circulated at least (at most, I'd say) 25% of the blood of my beloved Fjord horse. After 45 minutes or so of up and down over sandy pine trails I had sorted out that my steed, Quingway (pronounced Kingway) was pretty amenable to my leg and rein aids, and thankfully he was pretty good with his feet. When we finally got to the bay the tide was out, so we still had a good half mile of sand flats to go before we reached the water line. Apparently, the Bay of Somme is quite shallow and tidal, so you could almost walk across it at low tide (except for some natural channels). At the water, the horses waded in a bit, then our group leader turned us parallel to the water line and said something in French. By the way, did I mention that I speak no French, and there were few in this area who spoke English? But it turns out I understand more French than I thought, because I did catch the word gallop in there. Sure enough, off we go in a couple inches of water on firm sand, splashing and having a thrill. I still wasn't sold on this horse's ability to balance. He chose his lead and was crooked as a dog's hind leg, but I stayed up off his back and made sure I didn't do any sudden weight shifts and it worked out fine, even when the ride leader's horse, who we were behind, suddenly went skittering sideways for no apparent reason and leaving me and Qingway in the lead. By the way, you'll see from the photo that I was riding this horse (as are all the horses in the string) in a rope type hackamore. These horses have to be pretty easy-going to be ridden in hackamores by rank beginners on up. That was my horse experience in France. It was very interesting to see literally hundreds of Hensons in one place. I managed to learn that they no longer use purebred Fjords in their breeding program, so I assume the books are closed

RE: Alternative therapy
This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Linda. I haven't had Reiki done, but have had HTA (Healing Touch for Animals, http://www.healingtouchforanimals.com/), which deals with chakras and healing energy and intent. Both my fjords were used as demo horses for HTA clinics in Colorado on several occasions. I had the chance to sit on the outside and watch my horses undergo ministrations. My horses were just there for the students to learn on, so there was no particular problem being worked on. But throughout the clinic, I could see a marked change in the horses' demeanors. They would get a sleepy expression and you'd see their heads slowly drop down. All this while 4 to 6 students (all strangers) were moving around them clearing their chakras and fixing their energy flows. For the record, there was no food involved to get the Fjordies to stand there. :^) I know my description sounds kind of nutty, but hey, the horses liked it just fine. And BTW, they don't actually touch the animal while doing a lot of this, so we're not talking massage or spinal adjustments. I also had the opportunity to have my wound-up border collie used as a demo dog. She was in a room full of strangers and strangers' dogs, a situation that makes her very uncomfortable and nervous. She'd already had a go at one of the other dogs and had to be kept apart. Carol Komitor worked on my BC's chakras and her hips with healing energy. Again, I know it sounds nutty, but I also know what I saw. Here was my defensive BC on the ground with a stranger and you could see the sleepy expression and relaxation overcome her. Did it fix the dysplasia? No, of course not. It's not meant to. But for both the dog and the horses, something went on that they found pleasant and relaxing. BTW, I have attended the HTA Level 1 clinic. I bought a certificate at a silent auction, not knowing what it was. Thought it was something like T-Touch. I came away less than convinced, at least in my ability to do this; I think I may just need something a bit more concrete. But the animals don't come with any baggage or prejudices or expectations, and they all seem to find HTA a positive experience. That's why I got my Fjordies in as demo horses as often as I could! Lastly, I am in England now and have sold my Fjords, but I kept my donkey. She lives at the barn in Colorado where the HTA clinics are held. I was told that at the last HTA clinic the students used Daisy as a demo donk, and she was great with the students. This was a real surprise to me, as Daisy is usually very wary of strangers, especially if she's mobbed (4-6 students moving about her precious body). So, although I didn't see it myself, it sounds like Daisy the Donkey found HTA a positive experience as well. That's my experience with alternative therapy. Cheers, from squally Surrey. (Can you tell I miss the Colorado sunshine? Yes, I know about the snow there, but once the snow stops, you shovel in dazzling sunlight. Right, Beth, Sandy, Jeanne and Cheryl?) Re:white dun filly-
This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] From looking at Abby's pedigree, couldn't she be the elusive grey dun with the addition of the creme gene (in QH-speak, a smokey black and grulla in the same package)? We keep hearing of the probability that the grey dun masks the addition of the creme gene. This could be an explanation as to the uncertainty of her true color and her ability to look grey dun but produce white dun. Just a guess since her dam was white and sire was grey. Makes sense to me, anyway. KK It is Stone fox Farm's Abby- when she was a foal she was a very light color- instead of the typical black shading on the face of a grey she had light brown. Her eyes are also a very light amber color. As she matured (3-4 years old) Her color on her face darkened to the typical dark grey. There are pictures of Abby on our website in the gallery section. www.mandalafarm.com. I forgot to mention in the last note that the sire of the new white dun filly is Aimee Day's Drafn, a brown dun stallion. RE: Genetic diversity
This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Eike: Can this be right? We have a worldwide gene pool of maybe 10,000 mares. That would mean that more than half are in North America as there are 5100 mares in the NFHR registry. I have no idea how many are in the Canadian registry. Which doesn't allow for a whole lot in all of the European registries and wherever else in the world Fjords are. Just scratching my head over that number. Discussion of dun characteristics
This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] I know some may accuse me of being the color police, which is closely related to the spelling police I suppose, but I didn't want to let this pass without comment: ...as I rode a small buckskin horse (line-back dun) in Glacier Park that had striking zebra markings on his legs. Just wanted to say that a buckskin is not a dun, line-back or otherwise. Buckskin is created by an entirely different gene than the dun, although both genes similarly dilute the base color. The line back and zebra markings are characteristics of the dun gene. A buckskin will occasionally have a line back, but it doesn't come from the gene that creates the buckskin color. Rather, it comes from the base color of bay which will sometimes have a line back. And it is possible to have a horse with both the dun dilution and the dilution that creates buckskin. As a matter of fact, when it happens in Fjords you get an ulsblak or white dun Fjord! Stepping down from my soapbox. By the way, riding in Glacier National Park sounds like a hoot! Cheers! This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] (knee slappin') I guess I misread that one completely. But the answer is no. I just told the welder I wanted the top about yay big (I think it's 22 inches across). And the bottom should be a little bigger so it doesn't tip if (when) he stands on the edge. Red Dun Gelding for Sale in Parker, Colorado
This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello List: I just wanted to let folks know I am moving overseas and am selling my 8 year old red dun gelding. He is 14 hands and of a lighter build -- maybe 900 lbs on the tape if he took a deep breath. He is registered with FBA (Fjordhorse Breeders of America). He is Yule FBA-1171, foaled 10/6/97. His breeder is Leonard Rice, H Bar C, Inc. of Baker, Nevada. His sire is Nils and dam is Seria. He is a grandson of Grabb on his sire's side. I have put a photo album up on webshots.com. http://community.webshots.com/user/luvmypony (If you have any trouble with the link above, you can just go to webshots.com and put in my member name luvmypony. That will take you to Dink's album. Although he came to me as Yule, I have called him Fair Dinkum, or Dink for short. He is clicker trained to do several tricks and loves the whole clicking game. Dink would like a new owner/friend who will continue his clicker training. When he came to me, he wasn't keen on people, but now he thinks people are very good company. I attribute this to the communication through clicking. Dink has been my favorite of my small herd, and I will miss him terribly. But it's time to find him a new home as I will be leaving for England in August. Dink is broke to ride, but needs lots of wet saddle blankets. For the past five years he's mostly been my clicker training trick horse, while I drove my Fjord mare (recently sold to Linda Taylor in California). He's participated in two or three Fjord Fun Days at Starfire Farm. He even performed his tricks there. Have a look at his webshots album. There's 60 pictures of him doing just about everything he knows. He would make someone a lovely friend and a great little trick Fjord to take to Libby in the fall! And his lovely red dun color really stands out in a crowd of brown duns. Let me know if you're interested or need more details. Cheers! RE: Best Friends Grazing Muzzles
This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Linda: I don't know what size she'd wear. I know a lot of fjord people use these muzzles. I guess the only measurement I could give you would be the noseband of her driving bridle. I think that was 31 total, and it would probably be 4 inches less when buckled. This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks, Suzan. Very interesting. I felt sorry for that big ole sorrel horse though. Too bad Claremont isn't teaching its folks where to place a saddle. The way it's sitting on his back (shoulders, actually), all the weight of the rider is concentrated at the very back end of the saddle. Can't be comfortable for either horse or rider. Ouch! Cheers! Re: Fjord Markings
This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Additionally, this horse does not have the profuse (or any) white guard hairs in the mane and tail. His mane and tail are completely dark. Odd. Karen Does anyone have photos of offspring (are there any?), or the parents? Though Duns that have stripes across their whithers and/or shoulder shadows do occur, I've never seen the markings on a Fjord... This message is from: Karen Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Lovely story. I, too, hitched yesterday and took my husband out on the road. This is my first time out since a runaway with a haflinger four weeks ago. I ended up in the emergency room and the cart is in need of a carriage maker. So I'm still a little worried, but my Fjord mare was a stalwart. Even when the new neighbor horse came barreling up to the road to have a look at that poor horse being chased by a carriage (aka monster). She startled slightly, calmed at a word from me, and never even looked back over her shoulder at the blowing, galloping horse across the fence. Good pony! Cheers!
