Re: [Flexradio] An Antenna Issue- Looking for an Elmer
Richard, it sounds like a bad mechanical connection in the antenna, or possibly a moisture issue. Check out the eHam reviews of it: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/617 Mike - AA8K Richard Stouffer wrote: I need some advice on what appears to be a very basic antenna/radio issue. As far as I can tell is has nothing to do with my radio (5000A). Let me explain: Because of deed restrictions I have hinged my vertical antenna on a mast and only put it up during darkness- I love winter. I also have a loop that lies on the roof that I use during daylight, but it's a pretty lousy antenna; as a matter of fact the vertical when it's folded down is a far better receiving antenna than the loop on the roof. When the vertical is down the noise level signal is steady. The received signal on the loop, although a much higher noise level, is also steady. However, when the vertical is raised the signal fluctuates randomly. The signal (the entire signal indication, not just the noise level) increases by about 10db but the duration of the elevated signal is a second or two. I also noticed that when I checked it with the MFJ 269, the SWR fluctuates also. From the signal reports I'm getting, my transmissions appear to be steady, although I wouldn't bet on that. I replaced the coax yesterday and it had no effect. There are no tree limbs hitting the antenna. The antenna is a Hy Gain DX 77A. All of the utilities in this subdivision are underground and the nearest high power transmission lines are at least a half mile away. Any ideas on what the problem might be. Re: [Flexradio] 11kHz DC noise
Gerald; I picked up both of the isolation devices that are available at Radio Shack, as follows: (Item #1) Radio Shack Ground loop eliminator Cat #: 270-054 @$16.99 (Item #2) Radio Shack 1:1 Isolation transformer Cat #: 273-1374 @$3.99 Item #1 has no impedance specifications that I can see; It has two circuits. Item #2 is spec'd as 600-900 Ohms, 300Hz to 5Khz response. MY QUESTIONS: (1.) Is there any advantage to using either of these devices? -I'd much rather use the lower cost unit, as it will be easier to install. (2.) Is the impedance of item #1 (600-900 Ohms) acceptable? -Impedance of item #2 is undefined. (3.) Where do I apply the (item #1) isolation transformer? -I have been advised to insert isolation into the LINE OUT port (cable) on the back of the SDR-1000 radio. -Is this correct? (4.) Re: [Flexradio] 11kHz DC noise
(Jim #1 said;) Hey Jim, Radio Shack has a stero version for 16.99, Part no. 270-054. It has the wrong kind of connectors, but I will bet they have some adapters. They call it a Ground Loop Isolator. They also have a 1:1 audio isolation transformer in their catalog. 73 Jim, W4ATK (Jim #2 said;) So having read and re-read Q10241 in the knowledge base I am still dissatisfied. Why do we have to live with it? It is a design defect. 1. Okay on audio transformers but why not optical isolation? It seems optical isolators would have much wider bandwidth. Transformers are easier.. all passive devices for one thing, and they've had decades to make very linear transformers with good bandwidth. Optos require some power supply, have to deal with the issue of putting a DC bias on the sending end, etc. All solvable, but it takes more parts. Capacitive coupling is yet another galvanic isolation approach. And, there are some very cool parts from Analog Devices to do this. But, all in all, transformers are easy. Jim, W6RMK - Jim; I have decided to attack this issue, to see if I can loose some of the amplitude of the 11 Khz DC noise by employing isolation. Today, I picked up both of the isolation devices that are available at Radio Shack, as follows: (Item #1) Radio Shack Ground loop eliminator Catalog #: 270-054 ($16.99) (Item #2) Radio Shack 1:1 Isolation transformer Catalog #: 273-1374 ($3.99) Item #1 has no impedance specifications that I can see; It has two circuits. Item #2 is spec'd as 600-900 Ohms, 300Hz to 5Khz response. QUESTIONS: (1.) Is there any advantage to using either of these devices? (I'd much rather use the lower cost unit, as it will be easier to install.) (2.) Is the impedance of item #1 (600-900 Ohms) acceptable? (3.) Where do I apply the isolation? (I have been advised to insert isolation into the LINE OUT port (cable) on the back of the SDR-1000 radio. -Is this correct?) (4.) Do I need to use both circuits in item #1? (Or, would I use two of item #2?) (5.) Per question 4; -If two of the circuits are needed, where is the isolation to be inserted? (-Line in AND line out?) (6.) How much can I expect the 11 Khz noise amplitude's peak to drop? (Is all of this WORTH the effort??? -Or, should we all simply accept this artifact as-is?) No matter which item I use, the cables of my Delta-44 will have to be cut or adapted in some way. -Which means that I'd have to cut off the connectors that are part of item #1, or use a bunch of ADAPTERS. (This, or simply adapt the low-cost isolation transformer (item #2, above.), which will actually be a much simpler installation. Thank you, one and all; I appreciate your time and efforts to help us all, with your responses. 73!-Mike- K0JTA ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] Request Comments from the Group
In my youth, back on the farm, I experimented with long wires. I even tried using one of the strands of a barbed-wire fence that was stapled to wooden posts. That didn't work well for an antenna, but we did use it to carry DC Teletype from the house to the field-day site, using one strand and a ground return. It worked, but the main problem was sync because the generator frequency would drift and the Teletype AC motor at FD would follow the frequency. It was fun using TTY between the tents in the back forty and the farmhouse. This was before 2 meter FM. My favorite was made from electric fence wire, a quarter-mile spool from Tractor Supply. I got it up from the house to the barn roof, then tree to tree. I never did measure the distance, but it went a long ways out on our 80 acre farm. I had LOTS of signal strength. You will need a pre-selector between the antenna and rig. It was up for years and never took a lightning hit or damaged my gear. You do need to practice good grounding, as with any outside antenna. Make sure there is a low- impedance path to the earth where the antenna enters your home. Last year I was doing some antenna work and was reconnecting my 130 foot horizontal wire to the grounding relay on the tower. It is a simple motor-control type of relay that grounds the horizontal wire when the shack AC power is turned off. I was hurrying because radar showed a storm coming many miles away and I could start to hear distant thunder. I realized that I was feeling a tingling when I had one hand on the horizontal wire; the other was holding on to the tower. And the tingling was followed some seconds later by distant thunder. I survived my stupidity by climbing down and getting inside. [Flexradio] Delayed key output with Flex5000
Hi all, After reading the initial release of the owner's manual, there no longer a selectable option with variable timing as was the case with the '1000 running PowerSDR. What a shame! If one chooses the Flex 1000 during future software releases will this function (X2 TR sequencing) still be available? (No CAT control functions activated in the example here) I selfishly find timed sequenced keying outputs for TX1,2,3 of equal value as a per band assignment! Can someone spec the timing for RF output after PTT is made for the 5000? Likewise with break of PTT...or is all of this variable with the buffer/sample/mode settings used? 73, Mike K4EAR ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] RFPL - Virtual Antenna
Sure, as long as you are transmitting around 60 Hz. The big, iron transformer on the pole outside doesn't pass much HF. If you could couple to the primary side, you might get a little. I was Up Nort in the Michigan farmland and there was a power line that ran through the fields on wooden poles. I had a roll of electric fence wire and some \spare time, so I nailed it up on the poles for a LONG way. The adjacent farms were relatives. I connected to my Signal One and the noise was 20 over S-9. I didn't even bother to transmit, because I would never be able to hear an answer. I'm lucky I didn't blow out the front end with induced AC. While there I also tried a Gotham Vertical on top of the steel water well casing of a 117 foot well. I thought that this was the best ground rod ever. That worked as a great dummy load. Tuned up fine, never worked anybody on it. Gotta have radials. While I was at Michigan State U in the 1960's I worked on our dorm's carrier-current AM station. I think it was on 620 KHz. We connected to an outlet on the men's side of the six-story dorm, but we had no signal on the women's side, as there was a transformer in between. I got to go down into the steam tunnels to run a coax over to the girl's side with a coupling capacitor. We used a Heathkit DX-60 as our transmitter! The bandswitch and tapped coil were removed and a long piece of Air-Dux got the LC down to 0.6 MHz. The circulating current was so high that the plastic in the Air-Dux coil started to melt and sag. We put a fan on top of the DX-60 blowing down, not so much to cool the 6146 final as to keep the coil cool! Part of the jock's start up sequence was to plug in the fan. That DX-60 ran for years with 12 hour broadcasting days. Mike - AA8K Gerald Capodieci wrote: My SDRs keeps being described as a Virtual or Imaginary Radio by the owners of radios with real knobs, buttons, lights and switches. [Flexradio] 1.10.1 1.10.2 and AM
I have been trying our the newest Power SDR offerings and I like very much what I see however I have noticed that power output on AM is low. I have only about 12 watts. In high power AM I see 24 watts out using 1.10.1 and 1.10.2. You might remember I listed here, trouble at first making 1.10.1 work. That was due to importing a previous database. I built an entire new database and recalibrated (several times) in both 1.10.1 and 1.10.2. I can go back to 1.8.x (the latest official release) and the PA operates normally. Re: [Flexradio] About the S and D in SDR
I'm reactivating this old thread because of the last Flex Radio Friends TeamSpeak session. Phil, VK6APH mentioned his experience with phasing two SoftRock 40s running on the same clock. He said that the phase was rapidly changing, even with the short distance between his antennae. Perhaps some sort of adaptive scheme will be needed. A couple of ways for optical telescopes to compensate for atmospheric turbulence is to use a bright, nearby star for reference or to transmit a laser beam upwards where a nearby star is not available. How do radio astronomers compensate for ionospheric fluctuations? Surely that must be an issue for the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). Do they use statistical methods? Or is it sufficiently transparent at the observing wavelengths? Mike - AA8K Jim Lux wrote: At 01:19 PM 6/16/2006, Nicholas Bastin wrote: On 6/16/06, Mike Naruta [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: We could also link the transmitters to be sure to get through the pile-up. At least for the initial call. Then when he comes back to you, you can use just your own transmitter. Getting all the transmitters on the same Hertz is easy. You would need to measure network delay and compensate in order for the voice/dits to be in unison. You would have to sync to GPS. You can't accurately measure network delay and compensate, because congestion and network delay are dynamic. Even then it would be odd, because you'd have to introduce delay to allow for all the stations to receive the source signal before transmitting (basically turning your radio into a store-and-foward device like a network switch). All this assuming that it isn't illegal, which I'm sure it is, at least in some countries. You'd also need to compensate for the (varying) delay in the propagation path from the intended receiver. One *might* be able to approximate it by listening to the call from the intended receiver, but that would require you to communicate with all the transmitters. That is, all the stations would record the time they received the QRZ?. Then, you'd calculate a reference time that it must have been transmitted by the caller (which doesn't necessarily have to be the exact time it occurred). Then, you'd all agree on when you wanted the signal to arrive at the receiver, back up by your propagation delay, and then send at that time. The propagation delay isn't particularly stable, but then, it's not unstable either. It can be well represented as a FM with a deviation of a few Hz. There's some data from folks doing the ARRL Frequency Measurement Test (FMT) you can look at for examples. In any event, you'd definitely have a phase control issue. You might be better off all transmitting at a slightly different carrier frequency, and trying to synchronize the modulation. Say, each of the remote stations transmits at spacings of, say, 20-30 Hz, all transmitting the same thing. That would be pretty noticeable to the receivergrin. Re: [Flexradio] Frequency for CW and SSB
Well, here is my 2 cents. It may be a nuisance in general operating but its a must for weak signal microwaves as well as DXing. If its a problem for mixed mode, its because everyone has differnt radios or set ups are different. If everyone had CWU and USB or CWL and LSB then it would normally alway be ok. A perfect example was yesterday afternoon. 6 Meters was open to the east coast to the Caribbean, but here in the midwest, the DX was coming in very weakly and had lots of QSB. I spent considerable time watching a station and calling him on SSB. Most guys were calling on SSB, a few were calling on CW. The ones calling on CW were not being responded to by the DX. Why you ask? Did the DX not want to work cw? Nope, all the CW was outside of the SSB passband. Easy to see on the SDR-1000 bandscope. It was obvious that the DX was not even hearing the CW. These were stations with rigs that did not have the CW freq offset function when switching between SSB to CW. i.e. you would have to retune in order to hear it. With no luck on SSB, I gave one call on CW. DXCC #77 on 6M! He came back to me on SSB without retuning to hear my signal. We worked cross mode with no effort. I just laughed when I saw other guys again calling on CW, just outside of the lower end of the SSB passband...I tuned away know that the funtion does what it is intended to do. A few other rigs do it correctly. Typically the Yaesus do just fine. The Icoms did not until the Pro II I believe, and then yet you had to set it up that way. They would have CW on the LSB side when you were on a band that utilized USB. Other examples from the microwaves and weak signal work, we would try to work on SSB and say the signals QSBed out. You knew the guy was there, so we typically switch to CW. The guys with yaesus driving their transverters or whatever would pop out right where you needed them to be without tuning. I can recall many times loosing guys who I knew were running Icom 706s, etc. The fact of retuning to find a weak signal was normally a loss of a possible contact. This is why I ran Yaesu radios for my VHF and microwaves IFser...uh.until the SDR-1000 came along of course :) Again, my 2 cents. 73 Mike - KM0T - Original Message - From: Bernhard Hailer, DL4MHK/AE6YN [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: FlexRadio FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz Sent: Saturday, July 14, 2007 10:16 PM Subject: [Flexradio] Frequency for CW and SSB Hello, question regarding PowerSDR: when you switch from USB to CWU, PowerSDR adds the side tone frequency to the currently used frequency; e.g. you operate USB at 21.4000 MHz and your side tone is 600 Hz, your new frequency is 21.4006 once you switch to CW. This may be logical, but it is a nuisance if you operate mixed mode: I'm practicing CW with some local hams here, and I have always to correct the frequency when we have a final SSB chat after our practicing. Re: [Flexradio] RIT cleared on click tuning- RTTY problem
Back when I built my Twin Cities and HAL ST-6 TUs, transmitters with FSK FM'd the transmit frequency back and forth between Mark and Space. A very few transmitters had FSK. You usually had to dig into the VFO and use a diode and capacitor to shift the frequency. Later, as a shortcut to getting on the air with RTTY, some hams started using AFSK generators from VHF RTTY into SSB transmitters to generate a pseudo-FSK signal on HF. AFSK is not legal on HF. If they were strong, or their carrier suppression was not good, you could hear the third frequency of their carrier. And, sometimes other signals as well, especially if they had the mic gain cranked up. Definitely not a legal FSK signal. Then came low-tone AFSK generators that had a lower pair than the 2125/2975, because a lot of SSB transmitters couldn't pass the 2975. Then 170 Hertz shift. If you are transmitting RTTY, what frequency are you transmitting on? The Mark or Space? Or some offset where a SSB carrier should be? The problem we have is third party software that assumes we are using a SSB transmitter and uses AFSK tones to generate pseudo-FSK. Flex-Radio has spoiled me. Instead of making a front panel with an umbilical to the radio, why not take the next step and make an Internet connected front panel? That way you can connect it directly to the SDR-5000, or use it over the Internet to enjoy remote operation. Then folks could use a hardware panel or pc screen as they prefer. One development cost, ultimate flexibility. Like I said about T-Shirts and mugs, the SDR-1000 was the best goodie! Thank you for making such a great rig! Mike - AA8K John P Basilotto W5GI wrote: We currently carry two external knobs. About 30 percent of our customers buy one of the two controllers with knobs. Eighty percent of them report that after a week or so, they no longer need the knob because a mouse is sufficient. Re: [Flexradio] Print Operating Manual
I printed out a copy in draft mode a couple of years ago. Since then I just keep a shortcut to the file on my Windows desk top. That seems to work well after I decided that I could make the change. Re: [Flexradio] What is audio punch?
Up here I listen to AMers on the DX-60 net (3.88). It's not unusual to hear good audio on rigs and even some broadcast transmitters that have been converted to 75 meters. Every so often someone comes on with full-range audio that catches my attention because it sounds as if he's in the shack with me. Guess what rig they're running? Yep, an SDR-1000. I love listening to Hi-Fi AM and SSB. My Delta 44 goes into a Marantz with a pair of huge speaker systems. Sounds great. Of course, I can always narrow the filter when the band gets crowded. [Flexradio] NB/NR for AM
Many of us use the SDR 1000 for AM operation. Unfortunately for us the noise blanker and noise reduction functions of Power SDR have little or no effect on noise levels when used in the AM mode. I find the same noise limiter functions work very well for other modes and wish the same advantages could be applied to AM. I have searched the Feature Request list for any indication of previous requests. If any requests have been made, I haven't found them. I wonder what the rest of you think. Hi Farrell, When you say that the receive on the SDR-1000 is poor what are you referring to? Selectivity? Sensitivity? Tuning?
