These things can be troublesome so get the best cable you can find,
double or tipple shielded, gold plated pins. Transfer the ferrite beads
from the supplied 6 pin to 6 pin cable to your new one. Use a wire tie
to hold the beads in place, make it snug but don't over tighten.

OK, I suppose it could be your firewire interface. However, when mine

likely a handled exception and replacing the firewire cable fixed it.

If you have ever done any Windows programming you would know that an
unhanded exception is a program error that the author did not anticipate
and handle. This leads me to believe that your PSDR profile has become
corrupted. This can happen if your machine crashed or was improperly
shut down at one time. You should try doing a factory reset. It's not
likely that it has anything to do with Windows updates and turning them
off is a bad idea.

Your problem really sounds likd a bad Firewire cable. What test did you
perform that makes you think it's OK? If you are referring to the LED
inside your radio box all that verifies is that the wire carrying power
is connected and working, it doesn't verify communication.

By the way you can change the IRQ in Windows 7 or any version of Windows
by plugging your card into a different slot Most mother boards have one
slot that does not share it's IRQ. Some mother boards may indicate that
by using a different color connector. Mine doesn't. I just had to play
musical slots until I found it and it turned out to be the one at the
very bottom of my case.

2.3.5 us over two years old so I would say that's way out of date!
Most early adopters are used to encountering a few bugs and enjoy
tracking them down, reporting and fixing them.

For the most part it works. Occasionally it starts to oscillate. I have to
stop and restart PSDR and then it goes away. It could be the firewire driver.
This is a problem with DPC's (Deferred Process Calls) caused by
something running on your computer. You need to spend a little time
tracking this down and I'll bet Neil will be happy to help you.

I have stuck with the old Firewire driver as moving forward requires me to leave the
legacy Firewire driver and move to the new "streaming" driver.

Why?

Now for my question. In the release notes, are there a step by step procedure
on uninstalling the old software,
Actually if you read the release notes you will see that they
recommend that you DO NOT uninstall the old software and tell you
how you can make the old software work with the new Firewire driver.
It's just a matter of copying "pal.dll" from the new installation
folder to the old one.

configuring the new one, such as VAC
Using the PowerSDR-Data-Transfer utility (which initially did have a
troublesome bug that has since been fixed) you can bring all of
those settings forward from the old installation. A primary reason
for keeping the old installation. There is no need to re-install VAC
or change any settings.

settings and the last question. How long has it taken everyone from start to
finish to uninstall the old software, upgrade the firmware and reinstall the
new software? I want to determine the amount of time involved with this process.

I didn't watch the clock but I'd estimate about 10 or 15 minutes.

I am running a very fast quad core computer with a bunch of memory, low latency
(Thank you Neil) and Win7-64.

You might have a fast machine but it has a problem with DPC's that
I'm sure can be fixed with a little tracking work. When I first got
my Flex-3000 I had some problems with that too. It turned out that
the real time option in Malware Bytes was the cause and after
eliminating that the Flex has run very smoothly. It's a matter of
shutting down background processes one at a time, and monitoring
DPC's, until you find what's causing the problem and eliminate it.

[Flexradio] PowerSDR-DataTransfer Problem

2013-12-17 Thread Rich - W3ZJ
Here is what I found. If you make the mistake of attempting to start
PSDR-DT while PSDR is running it pops up a message telling you that you
must close PSDR first. If you then click cancel, close PSDR and attempt
to start PSDR-DT again it will open but the Setup Data is wiped out and
the Setup Data URL is gone. If you try to reenter the URL it won't let
you do it. Maybe there is a magic key combination that will let you do
it but I haven't found it and without it you are up the creek without a
paddle. However, I found that the setup data is stored in
C:\ProgramData\FlexRadio
Systems\PowerSDR-DataTransfer\PowerSDR-DataTransfer.xml (at least it is
on Windows 8.1). Keep a backup copy of that file so you can replace the
bad setup data with good data and you are back in business.

OK, following the lead of ON4AMG. I am not a beta tester so I had only
one copy of PSDR2.7.2 and PSDR-DT. However, I uinstalled and reinstalled
both. This time I ran PSDR-DT before doing anything else and selected
Options. One difference I noticed immediately was that the Setup Data
URL box now had a URL in it while before it was blank. So I did the
Update Setup Data and this time it worked indicating that there was a
more recent version of the Setup Data which I installed. I then started
PSDR 2.7.2 and it came up correctly with default settings. So I closed
PSDR and restarted PSDR-DT and updated the settings from V2.6.4. It went
smoothly this time and all seems to be well. I have no idea why it
didn't install correctly the first time but that's the story. Now to
investigate the new features of V2.7.2.

I am tempting fate by
updating my machine with WIN 8.1 ? Are there any known issues with running the
current version of PSDR

CW is my mode of choice and I am very happy with my Flex-3000. However,
to be fair, I don't use the internal CWX keyer. Instead I use an
external Winkeyer USB. There are a couple of advantages to this:

1) Keying speed is the same whether you are using Macros or Paddles.
2) You are not dependent on Windows process switching to generate clean
properly timed CW.

Re: [Flexradio] Remote Operations

2013-08-20 Thread Rich - W3ZJ
I assume your Flex-1500 was connected directly to the Surface Pro rather
than using it remotely. By the way that can't be done with the 3K or 5K
radios because there is no Firwire interface for it. I'd like to
understand why you would max out 4GB of ram. My shack desktop (a Dell
Vostro 420 with a 4 core processor) has only 4GB of ram and I am running
PowerSDR, 7 of the 8 DXLab applications, CW Skimmer, PstRotatorAZ, and
Google Earth. With all of that only 55% of my 4GB is utilized. Why would
the Surface Pro be maxed out with only PowrSDR, DM-780 and Logbook
running on it? Is DM-780 or Logbook really chewing up all that memory?

That's a pretty important omission Marty. All my devices are Windows

Chris,
I fixed a similar problem by 'forcing' the Flexcontrol to a specific COM
port. It always tried to install itself on a COM port that was occupied by
four-port PCIe card.
To force the Knob to use a specific port, go to Control Panel, Devices and
Printers, and look for the FlexConktrol or an Unspecified COM device. (Yoiu
can also get there through CP/ Device Manager) Click the Hardware tab, then
Properties, then Port Settings tab, then Advanced box. COM port number is
at the bottom left. Assign a port that you know is not in use.
Or, if you have played arouind with COM ports before, youi may have the
dreaded Zombie Ports. These are former COM ports that did not uninstall
correctly. They're hidden, and can't be killed by normal weapons. To score
the necesasary headshot on these, do this:

Run

Re: [Flexradio] Noise floor on 15 meters 20 db above all other bands

Could possibly be calibration. Try restoring default settings,
disconnecting all antennas and pressing Ctrl+Shift+P to bring up the
calibration program. Run all standard tests which will take about 15
minutes to recalibrate your radio on all bands.

If that doesn't do it you probably have a local noise source. Start
turning things off, switching power supplies, fluorescent lighting, TV
sets, etc., to see if you can isolate it. My noise floor on 15M today
is about -133 dBm. Some days its higher depending on atmospheric

quiet like today.

However I seem to remember reading that some difficulties were encountered

Re: [Flexradio] How to setup the radio for Digital Voice

2012-12-22 Thread Rich - W3ZJ
I haven't tried Ray's Voice Keyer, I use the one in WinWarbler, part of
the DXLab suite. I recorded the snippets the same way you did using PSDR
with the same microphone that I use live so that hopefully it actually
sounds like me. Is it live or is it Memorex? I agree that it beats
repeating your call into a pile up and for some reason it really seems
to be a "pile-driver". I liked your term :-) In fact, just a few minutes
ago I managed to crack what sounded to me like an impossible pile up on
FH8PL.

I have also used it for remote operation at times when I don't even have
a microphone to talk into. The limited number of snippets can sometimes
prevent you from saying something you'd like to but most DX contacts are
just, "Thank you, 59 73", anyway.

Why not? I use VAC on SSB to convey audio from WinWarbler's digital

Disable for all others" and enable VAC in your SSB transmit profile(s) .
Someone said the other day that you can't enable VOX with VAC turned on.

I have no problem using NB on digital modes with 2.5.3 though I have

[Flexradio] Flex-3000 and FHM-1 DX with a Heil HC-6

2012-12-17 Thread Rich - W3ZJ
Yesterday afternoon I had a unique experience. I worked OF9X (the Santa
Clause station) on 20M SSB. He was using a Web cam to send Video and
Audio of his operation live over the Internet. So I monitored that when
I called him and heard my own Audio echoing back with a slight delay
from his radio over 4000 miles away. I was quite pleased with the way I
punched through and sounded using the Heil Proset 6 boom headset with
the FHM-1 DX profile. The only change I made to the profile was to turn
on the Downward Expander to reduce shack noise.

Re: [Flexradio] Auto Defrag from Microsoft

2012-12-08 Thread Rich - W3ZJ
Some of what you are saying is true and some is not. Indeed windows does
schedule a weekly defrag of your hard drives . If one of your drives is
an SSD you should disable it for that drive and only that drive. It is
useful to keep a conventional hard drive tuned and has no affect on
performance because it automatically pauses while your machine is in use
and will not start up again until your machine has been idle for a
configurable amount of time, usually 10 minutes. Thus, you should never
even notice it running. This is all configurable in the windows "Task
Scheduler".

73, Rich - W3ZJ

W6SDM Steve wrote:

This came up in a discussion on the DDUtil Yahoo site when several of us
were having problems with DDUtil disconnecting from everything else. The
cause, ferreted out by Steve Nance himself, is the auto de-frag utility
that is in Windows 7.

In it's perpetual effort to add useless, unneeded features while leaving
ones out that may actually do someone some good, the Coke-drinking,
Cheeto-munching programmers at Microsoft have added a utility that
automatically defragments your hard drive at a predetermined interval. The
default setting is "on" at some ambiguous early-morning schedule. Do
yourself a big favor, go into control panel, and turn it off.

You can find the setting under Control Panel, Administrative Tools,
Defragment your Hard Drive. Hit the Configure Schedule button and un-check
Run on a Schedule.

Even if you don't use DDUtil, it's not a bad idea to get this out of your
schedule - particularly if you use a solid state drive.

If you use a solid state drive, like I do, defragmentation is not only
unnecessary but it shortens the life of the drive. If you use a regular
hard drive, it's unnecessary and, depending on the size of the drive and
the speed of your system, can take hours to accomplish. While the defrag
utility is running, your computer will feel like someone else is using it
while you are.

If you have an active computer with lots of files added and deleted, and
your hard drive is three quarters or more full, defragmentation isn't a bad
idea every few months or so - certainly not once per week. Defragmentation
puts all of the available space in once contiguous area and it puts the
fragmented files together, which, ever-so-slightly, speeds up access. Back
in the day of the 20 MB hard drive, defragmentation would yield a
noticeable speed improvement. Not so much anymore.

If you do want to defrag your drive occasionally, I recommend a free
program called Defraggler from Piriform, the same people who make
CCCleaner. It's quick, efficient, safe, and give you a visual indicator of
the lever of fragmentation and its progress.

Really not sure what it was before the problem occurred, so would still
appreciate hearing from the experts as to whether I need to redo something

Subject: [Flexradio] Weird BPSK31 Behavior

I am suddenly experiencing a new problem with my Flex 3000 on PSK.
Everything has been nominal until this morning. Now, instead of a nice
clean transmit signal on the screen, I have what appear to be two main
spikes. One is the intended frequency and normal strength. The second is
considerably lower in strength (40 or more db) and shifted about 1 KHz up in
frequency.

The only things that changed are:
1. An unexpected and unexplained Windows shutdown and restart (Win 7 64 pro
on a late model i7 machine). I know PSDR is not supposed to be shut down in
that manner and wonder if something fouled up there?

2. Last night I installed and used SDR Memory. That seemed to work fine.

Appreciate any help/inputs.

Yes and also note that DDUtil provides mode change macros that let you

Yes. When using MultiRX I have to increase the main firewire buffer from
256 to 512 bytes to prevent the "Motoboating". This causes a little
additional latency on CW but we seem to have to live with that unless
someone has a better solution.

Re: [Flexradio] RTTY Filters Question

2012-09-14 Thread Rich - W3ZJ
I ran into a problem with NH8S on 30M RTTY this morning too. He was
close to the upper band edge and PSDR indicated that he was 130 Hz out
of band. However, because of the audio offset he was not out of band at
all. In addition he was working down 5 which made my split transmit
frequency well within the band. However PSDR set my drive level to 0 and
would not transmit, because VFO A was indicating an out of band
condition. I probably could have gone into the database and changed the
band edge frequency but that would have upset the apple cart for other
modes so I just decided to skip working N8HS on 30M RTTY.

If you are seeing DPCs like that and you are running an antimalware

the possible cause of your DPCs. I found that Malwarebytes was causing

PSDR freezing or losing sync.

Re: [Flexradio] FW: Announcing the release of PowerSDR v2.4.4

2012-09-06 Thread Rich - W3ZJ
The most major change is the new Firewre driver for the 3000 and 5000
radios. It's not gong to have much, if any, affect on your 1500 with the
USB interface. After a couple of days with it now the Flex-3000
performance is much improved. I have been able to set the VAC buffer
latency to zero, reduce the size of the Firewire buffer to 256 bytes and
set the operating mode to "Low Latency". All without any sync problems.
This has lead to much improved CW performance. No more choppy sounding
CW at the higher speeds.

The biggest negative is the elimination of the VAC MME driver whch is
required by many third party digital mode applications that don't
support WDM. However, the solution to that is quite simple. Connct the
Pwr Speaker output on the Flex to the line in jack on the computer
soundcard. This makes the default computer soundcard available for
audio input to those third party applications. I'm a happy camper!!

How do I get the region1 bandplan to show? Flex1500 was purchased about

Not difficult, just an add on board or Firewire to Ethernet adapter
which is available now and I'm sure will be available for a long time to
come for whatever flavor of buss comes along in the future.

You can't get a notebook computer today (other than the MacBook Pro) that

Maybe not from Walmart or Best Buy, though I wouldn't swear to that.
But, I know you can get almost any model laptop from Dell with a
Firewire option installed. That may not be true of their newer
Ultrabooks but once again there is the Firewire to Ethernet adapter and
they all have Ethernet capability. Will Ethernet still be here in 50
years? Probably not, we will outgrow even it's speed capability. Most
everything will be some flavor of wireless or optical by then but I'll
bet there will still be converter interfaces.

...not to mention that Windows 7 machines will be hard to come by way
before 2062!

I've already checked it out on Windows 8 preview and it works fine.
Windows 8 is mostly a user interface upgrade to make it more suitable
for Tablet/Touch screen devices. Will it work on whatever OS is here in
50 years? My guess is it will run in a virtual machine environment.

It can also be a bad Firewire cable. You may think that's unlikely but I

Doubting that could have been the problem, I replaced everything else

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 3000 Connection Problem

2012-06-22 Thread Rich - W3ZJ

Jerry,
A couple of weeks ago I started having very similar problems with my
Flex-3000 to what you describe here. Like you I immediately suspected
infant mortality with my fairly new Firewire card and I replaced it to
no avail. I then turned in a trouble ticked to Flex and Dudley pointed
out that there is a status light inside the the case between the
Firewire connector and the PTT RCA jack. It's a bit difficult to see but
if you look through the crack around the Firewire connector you can see
it. In my case it was lit, supposedly indicating that the radio is
communicating with the computer. However, apparently that doesn't tell
the whole story. I decided to take a shot in the dark and replace the
Firewire cable, I had been using the one that came with the F3K. I
bought a good quality cable, 6 Ft. double shielded with gold plated pins
by Gigaware. Bingo, that was it. Now my Flex-3000 is operating normally
again. Of course, I don't know if you have the same problem but it's
sure worth a try!

efforts of Dudley, couldn't be repaired in the field. At any rate I
got a new 3K as a replacement. I had two different Firewire cards,
both new and believed to be good (they worked as far as connecting
with the first Flex 3000. And, for good measure, I switched to a
Lenovo desktop. A dual core 3 GHz machine with 4 GHz MB of memory
(PC1300) and Win 7 Pro with essentially nothing but the operating
system installed on it. I installed PSDR and the Flex driver without
incident. Windows Device Manager showed the driver comfortably nestled
in place. But, the driver cannot find the Flex. Only shows "Demo"
After fooling around a bit, I swapped the Firewire card into another
PC (not mine) and tried it. It connected right up. I swapped back and
it wouldn't connect. So the only thing different in the
connect/wouldn't connect scenarios is the actual PC itself.

Am I missing something? UAC issues? 32/64 problems? ANY help would be

Re: [Flexradio] Alternatives to Skype for remote audio?

2012-06-09 Thread Rich - W3ZJ
I have used Skype in the past. However, Skype is designed for high
quality telephone conversations and it tries to eliminate background
noise. A certain amount of noise is inherent in our usage and any
attempt to eliminate it, instead of improving it, causes pumping. Thus,
I use IPSound by SM5VXC which just plays it like it is. Thus, I find
that IPSound works much better than Skype for our purposes.

What I'd really like is some sort of client/server app that works over
regular IP networks without needing a central server (i.e., Skype) to talk
to. Something that can run over my LAN and that can take advantage of the
bandwidth offered by a LAN connection. Ideally something with clients for
MacOS X, too.

This is something that I'd use VAC to connect PowerSDR to.

I found something that fit the bill a few weeks ago but I can't remember it.

Re: [Flexradio] Noise Floor Flex 3000

This can also be caused by excessive DPC (Deferred Process Calls). I had
a similar problem when I first got my Flex-3000 and for me the main
culprit turned out to be the real time protection in Malwarebytes. After
disabling real time protection my problem was solved. I still do a daily
scan with Malwarebytes during off hours but don't use rel time
protection any longer. I am operating remotely this week and also
discovered that real time Malwarebytes on my laptop was a major cause of
dropouts in the audio stream from IPSound.

Mike,

I have not tried the internal keyer with my Flex-3000, I use an external
Winkeyer USB. I have found that in order to get smooth CW the Firewire
buffer (PowerSDR, Setup->Audio Tab->Primary Tab) cannot be any larger
than 512 bytes. The smaller you can make that buffer, the less latency
you will have. I find that I can run with that buffer set at 256 bytes
but at 128 bytes I can't use MultiRX. You may also need to play with the
sample rate, mine is set at 96000. Note that your PC and the quality of
your Firewire adapter will have an influence over how small you can make
that buffer before you start having problems.

Thanks Dan, that fixed a bunch of ills. I suspect the calibration was
never done at the factory :-(

[Flexradio] Strange meter readins

2012-04-27 Thread Rich - W3ZJ
The S-Meter for my Flex-3000 is about 20Db off. It is my uderstanding
that S9 should be -54 dBm but on mine it's -74 dBm, is there a way to
calibrate that?

Also on Tx the SWR reading always shows 0.0:1 no matter what the SWR
actually is. However the ATU seems to know the correct SWR.

[Flexradio] Flex-3000 motorboating

2012-04-20 Thread Rich - W3ZJ
I am a new owner of a Flex-3000. I have a situation in CW mode (maybe
other modes too, I'm not sure) where the receiver starts motor boating
at seemingly random times. It's easily fixed by stopping and restarting
the radio. There is probably something I can tweak but what is it?
