I would talk to David Wegener at www.wegenermedia.com. He sent me a

Maybe you use MOTU's Digital Performer, as I do. Also, graphic designers,

Most professional designers and design firms have dumped Quark in favor of
InDesign. I work with some of the biggest ad firms in the country, and most
of them have made the jump. Quark is outdated, expensive, bloated and
hateful of it's users. What company is as evil as quark? They still don't
have a Mac OS X version shipping. They don't even have an estimated ship
date for a Mac OS X version. OS X has been around for what those of us in
the industry consider a long time. Quark is a joke. It's the *PC* of the
desktop publishing world. For years they have had their way with their
users. Mainly because there was no alternative. With the advent of
InDesign2 people now have a choice, and Quark now has a viable competitor.
I hate monopolies, and do not support them by buying their products.

 try this, Mike.http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/manuals.html

As has been stated before posting links to the Apple Service manuals is not
allowed on LEM lists. You could get LEM into a heap of trouble by doing so.
I posted yesterday with a warning about doing so. What part of that was so
hard to understand?

We take this stance because of the history that Apple has demonstrated with
their tenacious legal actions against people who post those manuals online.
It used to be that people would just post links to Apple's own ftp sites.
Apple recently securely modified their ftp access because of all the
unauthorized log-ins. Gamba's site now bounces out of the country to a site
that Apple would have a more difficult time pursuing. Apple monitors many
world wide web mailing lists looking for posted links like this so that they
can go after the sites and legally and shut them down. I know this because
a fellow tech friend of mine (a member of the infamous 8500 list) used to
serve them out of his home and had scary people in a black unmarked Chevy
blazer with badges show up at his house and serve him with a federal cease
and desist order. It is not a joke.

So please...do not post any links to the manuals on any LEM lists in the
future. I can not, however, tell you what you can or can not send in a
private e-mail... ;-)

lots of things but perhaps not a good idea around airports right now

It was mentioned before by another member here, but I will reiterate it...

The ultimate bag for a Titanium Powerbook G4 (15) is made by Brenthaven. I
has a removeable padded sleeve that has hard plastic shields inside it. This
slides into a waterproof and stylish briefcase of backpack...depending on
your choice. I have looked high and low for the perfect bag for my TiBooks.
It's made by Brenthaven. Period.

Now some of you may consider a bag that is over $100 expensive, but I don't,
and I feel that that agrument is absurd. I consider it a small price to pay
to protect my TiBook which originally cost me $3499. Go look at one at a
computer store and you will know what we are talking about.

The problem is described below. It has now occurred four times, three times
 in the last 20 minutes.

My girlfriend was working on her powerbook G4 just now, and the backlight on
her screen went off. The keys for brightness didn't do anything to bring it
 on again.
I restarted (could see enough to do this after saving) - everything now ok,
 backlight back on.
Any ideas? Is this hardware, or software? And should we be worried?

Extra info - Powerbook G4, 6 months old, running 10.2.3. When the screen
goes dark, I can open System Prefs and move the brightness slider - but
nothing changes. The screen stays dark.

Send it in to Apple immediately. That sounds like a bad backlight, and you
are within your 1 year warranty period. Also consider buying Applecare for
it to extend your service period.

I agree with that statement. I will second it. I would be willing to bet
that it is not *both* the processor and the Mobo. Even if it was one or the
other it would be rare, but both!! No way. I think you should get a second
opinion. I have *never* seen that happen in a Pismo. They are very reliable
machines.

On another note that would be an extremely expensive repair. I would
probably sell the book for parts and buy a new one if their diagnosis turns
out to be true (which I highly doubt).

What's the brand? It would have to snake around from a USB port on the

It's a Kensington Flylight. I have one. I plug it into the back of my
TiBook and snake it up and curl it over the back of the display so it shines
down on the KBD. It was about $20. Low power draw too.

I think what he meant : MP3 players're manafactured by 3rd party (not by

It was a joke.

On 12/24/02 2:30 PM, Andrew Main enlightened us by writing:

 Pismo going until I can get a 1GHz G4 iBook (with--I can dream--a
more user-friendly case with rounded edges).

Maybe all those of us who would like to see another Macintosh laptop come
out with rounded corners and/or a better appearance than the (IMHO - and
at risk of starting a flame war, ugly) TiBook, should fill out the
feedback form on Apple's site to let them know we'd like a less
mechanical appearance for PowerBooks and iBooks.

Can't hurt and might (remotely) help - if enough people voice their
opinion and wishes to Apple... :-)

You can fill out all the forms you want (and I do suggest that you all voice
your opinion, but I doubt that it will make any difference whatsoever. Your
dislike of the TiBook's appearance puts you in a very small minority. The
TiBook is revered by even hardcore PC users as the most beautiful laptop
design on the market. Your call for rounded edges is an outdated and even
Retro design ideal and that has been passed over in the last decade in
favor of sharper edges and newer appearances. No one wants a laptop that
looks like it was designed in the 80's (well, maybe a few people do). I
absolutely love the appearance of my TiBook. It is thinner and lighter than
a Pismo and has such a beautiful large screen that I often catch people
looking over my shoulder at it in public places.

I applaud Apple for moving *forward* with their design ideas instead of
muddling around with designs that have been done to death.

You've gotta be kidding? My pismo is bulletproof, ti-books are way too
fragile, ask anyone who own's one. If moving forward means introducing a
more fragile product that when first released, had overheating problems.
I have heard more than one horror story from ti-book owners regarding
hinge replacements that cost $1600 USD for a tiny piece of plastic. Why
call it titanium? And as far as Hardcore PC users revering it as the
most beautiful laptop design on the market, that and your reference to
such a beautiful large screen that I often catch people looking over my
shoulder at it in public places, get a grip.

I will not get a grip at all, maybe you should take some of your own
advice. I own a Pismo 500, a Wallstreet, a 1400, a 3400, an iBook SE/466, a
bunch of older Powerbooks and even an Outbound. I *love* my Tibook. My
Pismo on the other hand is bulky and heavy. It is no more durable than a
Tibook. TiBooks just *feel* more delicate. They are very durable. I had a
client slam his Tibook in a desk drawer and it just dented the lid. Screen
is functioning perfectly. It was the Pismo and Lombard lines that had the
bad hinges. I have never heard of TiBook overheating. They get hot on the
bottom, but that is *not* overheating. They function fine. I feel that the
Tibook is the most beautiful laptop that Apple has ever released. I like
the 2400's too, but the TiBook Wow.

Can anyone recommend me one? I'm looking at the lower end, since my

I have the Canon N650u and it does a fine job. My scanning needs sound
similar to your own. A plus is that it's just a little over an inch thick
and is USB powered, so no power adapters are necessary, and it slips nicely
into my laptop bag.

The last reason I suspect this to be a troll is that you start by
talking about how you are a Mac user and have been forever, but you
want to compare Mac OS X to Windows ... If you are such a hardcore Mac
guy why do you care how it stacks up to Windows? I would think that you
would be interested in how it compares to OS 9 since that is what you
 say you are using.

Here's what I think. No one ver called it system 4. Here were the early
versions of the Mac OS:

System 1.0
System 2.0
System 3.0
System Tools 4.0 (System 3.2, Finder 5.3)
System Tools 5.0 (System 4.2, Finder 6.0)
System 6
System 6.0 (Finder 6.1)
System 6.0.5
System 6.0.7
System 6.0.8
System 7

Kind of odd huh?

Re: Making choices

2002-12-13 Thread Obi-Wan
On 12/13/02 5:57 AM, Kochkodin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Spew into the
Cybertrough:

I called Mac Zone last night and told them that they lost a $2500+ sale
due to this issue. I spoke with the night shift supervisor who said he was
unaware of the situation and promisd to pass the info on to the day shift
corporate honchos...I also told them that I would do my best to dissuade any
and all purchases now and in the future by the members of the Penn State Mac
Users group. I disagree profoundly with Charles' religious leanings but it's
just like tv...BYPASS it if you don't like it..

I agree with you, but I have something to say. Everyone is saying that it
is free speech basically. It is Dan's right to post what he wants to on his
site. Essentially that is true...but not without consequences. Mine may be
an unpopular opinion, but I must say that it is also Mr. Bauer's right to
complain about it if he sees fit. He is allowed to complain about a
religious article posted to Mac-Content site (or at least bring it to the
attention of advertisers so that they are aware of it). He probably didn't
join Lem to talk about religion. He probably joined to talk about Macs.
Why is everyone slamming him for complaining? It's his free speech right
just as it is Dan's to post such an article. (disclaimer: I don't know Mr.
Bauer, and he may be a total jerk in real life. I have only heard of him
through this discussion).

Dan knows that I am not a religious person and we get along fine, but he
also know that I support LEM 100%. This article bothered me as well. Not
to the point where I would contact advertisers, but it did bother me, and I
am a Nanny on many LEM lists. It made me wonder if I should spend anymore
time here with LEM. It made me wonder if I want my name attached to a Mac
site that promotes religious rants by it's writers. I think it is important
for you all to consider (whether you like it or not) that about 20% of this
population at LEM (as in US Society) is not only *not* Christian, but not
religious at all. We have rights as well. Sometimes people who are
devoutly religious stomp all over other people's toes without even thinking
that they are doing anything wrong or offending. I suggest that everyone
think about it. I think about how my opinions and statements will affect a
religious person before I make them, and you should do the same.

I have said my peace. I will allow anyone else to say theirs, but I declare
this thread dead at 7p.m. PST today Friday 12/13. Please drop it by then.
Thanks.

I agree with the others. Remove and reseat the processor. I can't tell you
how many Pismo's I have fixed after a drop by simply reseating the
processor. When a Pismo gets dropped the case tends to flex popping the
processor out or partially unseating it. If that doesn't help, then check

Does anyone know how hard it is to replace the little plastic lens that
covers the IR port on the Pismo? I just noticed that one of the ones I
bought on eBay is missing that. Other than that it was in perfect
 condition.

That is a very common problem. Mostly cosmetic, but still an opening where
one should not be. Finding the replacement lens is harder than installing
it. When I get a clients machine in that has the lens rattling around
inside I just disassemble the machine's top case and epoxy it in. They fall
out all the time.

If anyone finds a reasonable source for those lenses please forward it to
me. I end up taking them out of dead Pismo's that still have the lens
intact. That makes it hard. Not only do Pismo's rarely fail, but lots of
them are missing the lens when I get them.

there are two different $50 charges that AppleCare might charge you...
I used to be one of the AppleCare phone agents.

the first $50 is for the call, and is sometimes waived if the problem
 requires hardware service.
the second is for data transfer, but is only charged if the transfer is
both necessary and successful. this $50 is completely optional.

So my next questions are:

1. This only applies to Powerbooks under Applecare and through Apple...yes?
(because it d*mn well does not apply to any other machines brought into any
of the shops that I have ever worked at).

2. This was implemented relatively recently?

The reason I ask is that I don't understand the reasoning behind it. Why
would Apple transfer data off of a drive? Why would they offer to take that
responsibility with thousands of failing machines a year? If the processor
is bad they would have no reason to transfer data. If the drive was truly
bad the transfer (most likely) wouldn't be very successful. What would be
one situation where that would be a necessary and sucessful operation?

drive and restore from the Software Restore CDs My goal here is to
make sure that (a) if I replace the part, it fixes the problem and (b)
I replace the right part. Also, if it's a software issue, no part is
ever going to fix the problem. A large percentage of people tend to
insist that every problem they have is hardware... I like to make sure
 they're right.

True..true.

We do things in the same manner, but I have drives for every Apple computer
so I use my own drive leaving theirs intact eliminating the need to do any
backups). I just swap them out to install a clean OS to verify that the
problem wasn't a PEBKAC.

Not to make you more upset, but that is *not* why Apple asked for a CC#.
They will take absolutely NO responsibility for your data, and will not
transfer it anywhere. The $50 is in case they find that it is not an error
on their part. Then they charge you for the service call.

I used to work at Apple, *and* at an Authorized service shop. Unless this

Jeremy, have you ever heard of this policy?

Another thing. You state that it is covered under Applecare? Do you just
mean that it is still in it's one year hardware warranty period, or that you
purchased an APP for it? If you have not spent the extra $350 to purchase
Applecare I HIGHLY recommend that you do so...especially since you are
having problems now. It will protect you in the future. But judging that
this is a Pismo you must've purchased an APP since it is already probably

This is not theft and is very offensive to call it that, but it seems

We all have the same rights. This is an interesting conversation. Try not
to belittle it with random accusations.

FWIW First for getting up to see what the problem was you were being a
 good citizen

True. No one ever said anything to the contrary.

Your situation was clearly an accident and that is exactly what
insurance covers, accidents. This is not finding a loophole. You paid
premiums for just this possibility, probably higher ones as the
coverage was good. Now unfortunately it is time to collect fairly what
is covered. Unfortunately you will not replace what you had, you will
only get partial replacement. Filing a legitimate claim does not drive
up rates, it is factored in as part of doing business, a tax write off
for the Insurance company. There is no controversy here. No scam, no
fraud, no immoral actions, just a legal contract and a honest good
 citizen.

This is your personal opinion. He had a Powerbook 500 series and was able
to buy a Pismo on eBay as a result of the insurance settlement. THAT is not
fair business. Do the math and figure out the dates between the machines.
When was the Pismo introduced and what was a PB 500 series worth at that
time? About $50. That's what. He got over on his insurance company by
about $1500. That is not right IMHO. He should have been reimbursed for
what he lost. A 500 seres Powerbook worth (at the time) about $50. The
400MHz Pismo was released in Feb of 2000. At that time I was giving 500
series PB's away. Maybe $50 for a 540c.

Some of the more ridiculous points about throwing the computer at the
perpetrators head, well first that would probably would not be covered
by your insurance and unless you were in grievous fear of your life
then the person throwing the computer could be arrested for assault,
yes dumb I agree. Grabbing a 9 mm to investigate a problem outside,
well you better read up on your gun laws. Only in the instance of you
again fearing for your life, with no other avenue of escape can you
point the gun, let alone use deadly force with a gun. I do support the
right to bear arms, but you better know when and how you can use a
 weapon.

And I do. I understand my rights very well.

Insuring a expensive computer is a wise choice or at least one that
should be brought up, too bad anyone with a view not agreed on the
list, by a few, get such harsh treatment, throwing slurring innuendoes
 because they disagree.

It was never a question, but rather a commentary offered by the original
poster. No one has disagreed with his actions, but some have questioned the
morality of asking an insurance company to pay for him dropping a laptop.

Let me ask you a question. If you were typing away on say...a Tibook-500,
and you heard intruders ...would you jump up and let the powerbook fall to
the floor? And if so would you ask for your insurance company to pay for it?

Or would you take 1 second, set your powerbook down and pursue the
intruders?

Just a hypothetical question.

promptly used towards buying a Pismo on ebay.
Moral of the story...Make sure that you have an insurance

No offense, but you feel it OK to ask your insurance company to pay for
something like that? That seems a bit like theft to me. Can some other
homeowners chime in and tell me that this is the norm? If I dropped my
TiBook I would not look for a loophole of coverage...since it was my mistake
and I dropped it. Even if my home was being broken into, I could still
manage to set my laptop down before grabbing my 9mm and going on to
investigate.

Now if my home caught on fire while I was away and burned up my
laptop...well that would be a different thing.

EXCUSE ME??? THEFT??? The damage occurred during the prevention of greater
damage to my home...A police report was filed and the adjuster ( a Nationwide
employee rather than an independent adjustment firm, BTW) had absolutely NO
problem with the claim.. They could very easily have rejected the claim but
my actions prevented a much more expensive claimI find your reasoning to
be irrational, to say the least...that's what insurance is for...it was NOT
intentional, it WAS an accident..so if you are stupid enough to park your
vehicle on a street and it is stolen, by your reasoning you shouldn't be able
to file a claim because your mental deficiency is responsible for the
theft...BTW...The vandals were later apprehended because I was able to provide
a license plate off of their vehicle...it also cleared a series of vandalism
 reports...

I asked a group of my friends and co-workers this morning and *all* of them
thought that it was an accident on your part and that your insurance company
should not be held responsible. My friend Theo stated that if you had used
the powerbook as a weapon and hurled it at the vandals/burglers then he
thought that it should be covered, but since you just dropped it rushing out
to investigate it was your fault and you should be responsible for it.

I have respected your extensive contribution to the list, but I feel that in
this case, as well as in a recent discussion, you over-stepped the bounds of
civility and I would respectfully request an apology..

I did not call *you* a thief. All I said was that is seemed a bit like
theft. Insurance fraud is a huge problem in this country.

Lets say that some normal joe accidentally dropped his laptop and cracked
the LCD. What's to stop him from making up a story that my house was being
broken into, and I leaped up and dropped my powerbook on a whim. He could
then call the police and file a report, without anyone ever having been
there, take the padded estimate and go to eBay and buy a Pismo.

I have no doubt that your story is true, I am just illustrating a point.
But since another list member stated that insurance companies will pay for
an act of stupidity then I guess whatever! All the others whose
premiums go up as a result of people filing claims like that one will no
doubt be happy as well.

The way I was raised would not allow me to do that. I accept responsibility
for my actions. Even if I was doing a noble thing by stopping a rash of
home vandalisms, I would not have filed a claim for dropping my laptop on my
way to the door. I guess it's just me.

Just rebooted for the xth time with the mouse button down - nothing comes
out and the drive make no sound at all. I assume it died and will bring the

You can force it to eject in Open Firmware.

Restart the computer and immediately after the startup sound, press and hold
the key combination Command-Option-O-F. Release the keys when you see
Welcome to Open Firmware. At the prompt, type: eject cd. Press Return,
then wait. The drive should eject any disc that is inside the mechanism.

Let me know if that works.

Let's turn this away from flaming and into reason. The reason it is called
the option key is that no Apple Keyboards had the little alt on them in
the beginning. IIRC that was an advent of the Appledesign keyboard and it
was only printed on them to facilitate the machines that came with DOS
compatibility. So in the beginning there was no alt key. That is why we
call it the Option key. I am interested to see if anyone can tell me which
keyboard was the first to offer the little 'alt on the Option key??? IMHO
it is totally understandable that a member got his undies in a twist over
the use of the term alt key. It is the same as saying that you should
replace the CMOS battery. This is a Mac list and we use Mac terms.

On 11/21/02 5:37 PM, Geoffrey Loeffler [EMAIL PROTECTED] Spew into the
Cybertrough:

Any debate on Toshiba v IBM is like Coke v Pepsi. It was in fact
Transinternational who advised the IBM 40GNX was better than the
Toshiba, a view I agreed with after my research fwiw. As for Trans, It
in fact has taken 3 phone calls and a e-mail on 4 different days to get
a RMA from Trans. They then wanted to push me off directly to IBM as
Trans could not guarantee they would have a replacement drive on hand
when mine arrived. We worked it out today but rather bumpy RMA ride I
 would say.
If I were sending either of my kids pismos drives in it would not be a
big deal about wiping the drive. You may not care if others share your
data, I do. However, to make such a impudent remark as in your post
below, referring to someone who is asking a question as paranoid is
boorish and takes away some of the good work you accomplish here. Do
not let the titles go to your head or effect honest questions.

My comments are based on experience. My titles mean nothing. I am a
glorified car mechanic.

I warranty drives all the time with Transinternational (most of them IBM and
Western Digital). I dial the same number as you. They offer me no
*special* treatment, and my record with them has been sparkling. I am never
on hold for more than a minute or 2 and they are prompt. I got an RMA from
a fellow named Damon this morning and it took less than 2 minutes.
Sometimes they refer me to the manufacturer, but what do you expect? They
really aren't obligated to allow you to return it at all. You may have
dropped it, or handled it incorrectly,or static discharged it. How should
they know what you did to it?

Secondly, they are perfectly correct when they say that they may not have a
replacement drive on hand and they want to push you off to IBM directly.
Why should they replace a drive that is covered under a 3 year manufacturers
warranty when IBM can do it even faster than they can. And by law they are
only technically forced to warranty your drive if you return it within 72
hours of the purchase, as they are located in California and that is the law
here. After 72 hours, unless specified in writing, any further obligation
is on the manufacturer of the goods that were purchased.

They are licensed and bonded. None of your data will be shared, and if you
feel so strongly about it then you better not go to an ATM in public, or use
a VISA card a a store, or appear on a security camera, or (heaven forbid)
get fingerprinted for a job. That's all I am saying.

The following is my strong personal opinion so stop reading at this point if
you are easily offended:

It is people like you sir, that tie up phone lines by demanding unreasonable
customer service and in the process make other people wait. You should have
listened to the person at Transinternational and sent the drive back to IBM.
IBM has a 48 hour turn around (faster than Traninternational), meaning that
you would already have your drive back and not have wasted the time of the
reps at Transinternational, or the time and bandwidth of the people on this
list. By going through Transinternational you place the blame of faulty
hardware on the supplier...not the manufacturer where it belongs. By doing
so you also remove stock from the shelves of the supplier that may be
destined that very day to a school, or your friend, or myself... instead of
dealing with the problem in a professional manner and contacting IBM for a
replacement.

Just my 2¢

Ah, but Obi-Wan Kyle, what does it take to actually retrieve 'real' data
from a zeroed-once (or twice or thrice) drive? Is there a practical way
to do it without going through a pretty serious HW recovery effort? I
assumed the OP merely needs to ensure the IBM refurb factory or a later
user of said HD won't stumble upon some corporate secrets (or whatever.)

What I recommend to clients that have security issues is to use Magneto
Optical or CD/DVD drives to save the really sensitive info. And then burn
the media when they are done with it. I have a client that works at Lawrence
Livermore Lab here in the Bay Area. That is how he handles his data. That
way it is portable and destroyable.

There are several consumer level disk recovery utilities on the market that
will do 100x what...say Norton Unerase is capable of. What Shawn King
pointed out is true as well. Drive Savers (also local to me) will recover
any drive for between $800-3000 or so. They have capabilities that I wish I
had sometimes. They can resurrect data from machines that have been
submerged, or caught on fire. All I am saying is that there is no real safe
way to be sure that your data is 100% unrecoverable, which is what the
person was asking. That's all.

Well, there is, but you'll lose out on the trade-in value: an industrial
shredder will pretty well take care of any data recovery issues you
 might have.

This is, in fact, the preferred way of some corporations to 'surplus'
old HDD's. That's why my ex-Motorola 7600 came with no hard drive in it...

Then if you want to be showy about it, about a half-pound of thermite
 will do it, too. ;-)

This is VERY true. In fact Lawrence Livermore Labs does shred/compact their
drives after they are done, but that is only for internal computers drives,
and this guy hired me to work on his home network. Thermite is also a fine
(a bit gaudy though) method. ;-)

I think the original poster wanted to send their drive back on an RMA

Which still makes your drive recoverable to prying eyes, unless you write it
to zero 7+ times.

I would switch to Mail.app if they could nail one feature down. Which is:

When you have a mailbox open and are reading all the messages in it, when

Entourage incorporated this feature, but since it only comes in the Office

First of all as a G-Book nanny I ask that you include a posting title in

frequently lately. I deal with hundreds of customers each month, and the

What I suggest you do is send your machine in to Apple and pay the full
charge for laptop repair, which is $350. They will replace the drive and
check your hnges and a number of other things. It's worth the $ for those
who didn't buy Applecare. I wholeheartedly recommend buying Applecare for

AFAIK there is no such thing as a Wallstreet II.

The Kanga came first. It was a G3/250 in a 3400 style case released in fall
of 1997.

The G3/233 and G3/292 Wallstreets were released in May of 1998.

The G3/266 and G3/300's were called PDQ's. They were released in September
of 1998.

One could do good to get a stock G4 Yikes for $600 + shipping
and if/when one did it wouldn't compare in speed or performance.

Ya, but your B W is dropping farther and farter down the food chain. I
just bought a G4/500 Gigabit ethernet for $600 (40gb/384mb/DVD/56k) to act
as a server. It depends on where you look. I could've snagged a second
G4/450 for $500, but I didn't have the cash in my hand.

The advice to avoid a Wallstreet (and all their problems) is sound. Get a
Pismo 400 at the least. And if you don't have the $ then save up until you
do. I have a pile of dead Wallstreet units here. Don't go there.

On 10/13/02 2:10 PM, Ross Cottrell [EMAIL PROTECTED] Spew into
the Cybertrough:
Had the same problem once on my 300 mhz Wallstreet. The guy at
pbparts.com had me disconnect the keyboard. I did, and the machine
started right up. Diagnosis: bad keyboard.

Strange thing was, pbparts sent me a bad keyboard which I returned
after much whining--they didn't want to give me my money back, they
wanted me to take a credit. But I had put my original keyboard back
on and the startup problem was no longer present. Strange, but I
haven't had a problem since. I've never replaced the power manager
either. But disconnecting the keyboard definitely allowed my
Wallstreet to startup when I thought it was dead.

Prior to disconnecting the keyboard, I tried resetting the open
firmware per Apple support. This did not solve my problem though.

That is a very common and well documented problem. And the 300MHz G3 Laptop
is not called a Wallstreet. It's code name is PDQ.

when I installed RAM. It's the called the heatshield isn't it?
Something I'm overlooking here? That's what I see to remove from
 Apple's how-to videos.

No. That's what I am saying. You are never supposed to remove those
screws. Follow the metal conductive arm that goes from the heatsink out to
the left then it attaches to another heatsink looking thing. That is
called the thermal transfer plate. The screw you want to remove is
basically (imagine the Keyboard installed) under where the Left Apple Key
would be. You remove that screw and then pull the processor, heatsink, and
plate out as a SINGLE unit. If you remove the 2 screws you have to get a
new Thermal Transfer pad from Apple (good Luck) or take it in to a service
provider. Your machine will overheat and fry the processor very quickly is
you don't adhere to this protocol.

Oh. You must be talking about the plate that covers the processor card.
That is not the heatsink. That's the EMI shield. Sorry. Wrong
terminology. There are 2 screws. Phillips. Use a pliers if they are
stripped.

Hold down Apple-Option while opening the memory control panel. You will see

Yes you can. I do it all the time. Depending on your drive and machine

Um, I have used Eudora since 1.5.1. I have never had the problems I
have had with Outlook, Outlook Express and Entourage. Eudora handles
large email databases, Microsoft's products (when they are not stored
on a server but are locally) don't at all.

I can say that Eudora alone has made me thousands of dollars in tech
support. It is a shoddily written program the evolved for novice users. I
love it. I bought a car off of it. I do not debate that Outlook stinks,
but Eudora is equally poor in quality. I could tell you horror stories. I
have had absolutely no problems with Entourage..nor have any of my current

You'd have to ship it to me to diagnose it. You can't accurately
diagnose a problematic Mac through e-mail discussions. That being said, I
would Run Apple's Hardware test and then Tech Tool Pro. I would also
suggest doing a Nuke and Pave. Zero all data on the drive and do a
re-install. This will take a lng time, but will eliminate a lot of
possibilities.

There is definitely something wrong with your system Ryan. You need to have
it looked at BEFORE something bad happens and you lose important data. I
would guess you have a Hard Disk problem or bad Ram, but it is impossible to
tell without getting my hands on it.

Probably this is a general laptop problem.

I disable the bulb (saving battery and display life) and angle the laptop
with the sun so that it provides the lumination I need. It increases
battery life by up to 55% on my TiBook.

If you opened your G4 and disabled the bulb you probably voided your
warranty. Tell me you didn't do that Ryan. Please...for your sake...tell
me you didn't do that.

Yes Sir, you are not a nanny, sir!

I was replying to Kyle's OT response and I deemed it acceptable
(margainally) because he is the nanny.

A little OT stuff is fine. I don't jump on people for the occasional OT (as
long as it is within reason). It's fun and it spices the list up. I went
OT because I was excited at the chance that one of our members is a
recognized actor. So what?!? I suggest we all lighten up a little bit. I
dropped the thread by not responding and now publicly deem it DEAD.

I could Rule this list with an Iron Fist if that is what you people want? I
don't think you do though.

I've used Eudora for years and never lost a single byte after transfering
mailbox files from one hard drive to another several times over the years. It
never crashes. It may not be the most user friendly, but it is the most
reliable email client ever made, IMHO. I gladly paid the $40 to register it.

And as a tech that has serviced thousands of machines, I assure you that
Eudora is not AT ALL trouble free. I can't COUNT how many times I have had
a client problem ith Eudora. That's why I went with Entourage.

Not only is there no proof that this computer is actually a Buffy Mac, but
the seller is advertising it with Final Cut and Adobe Photoshop preloaded??
And with the sellers previous *3* sales I am sure that this is a fraud
loaded with illegal software and it should be reported to eBay. Besides
most prop Mac's are just shells...not functioning machines. I have an iMac
from Nash Bridges and it is a shell with no guts that I got with papers
proving it's history for a whopping $10 at an auction.

Computers that are running PC-33, 66, or 100 can all take PC-100 or PC-133.
You can't go tthe other way and give PC-33 to a machine that shipped with
PC-133.

I was wondering if anyone out there has attempted clean-installing Jaguar (or
upgrading to Jaguar from 10.1.5) on a Pismo Powerbook containing greater than
 512MB RAM.

There is a preliminary report on MacFixit.com that installation might be a
problem on Pismos containing RAM DIMMs that are larger than 256MB.

I have 1GB on mine (2 x 512MB DIMMs). Wondering if I should be worried
 (yet...)

I installed it on a Pismo 500 with a 512 Dimms and it ran great.
