Recommend Skype/Snapz Pro compatible microphone/headset?
I have a 15 1.5GHz Powerbook. I've tried two different microphones and so far neither of them work (I thought my input jack might not work but I tested it with something else and it worked OK for that). Am looking for recommendations for headsets, either USB or (preferably) Bluetooth, which people recommend with a Powerbook. Price isn't as much of a concern as working well and reliably and clearly. For example, I replace the shifter in my car myself, the water pump fails, and the dealer won't cover the water pump failure even though it's covered under warranty. I agree with you, Counselor, but the court (Apple) told me that if they saw the drive was replaced, they would assume that was the cause of any other problem. That was their rule and there was no reasoning with them about it. I can vouch for the fact that they blamed my 3rd party RAM for a hard drive problem that I was having. I remember reading somewhere about someone's experience working in a tech support call center where their job was basically to get people off the phone ASAP. He struggled with the fact that helping someone took too long and would reflect poorly on his evaluation. One of his superiors had mastered the kill of We only support the original configuration meaning that he could essentially end any request for help if you had even installed any software on the computer! [again we see PC as being used exclusively for Windows] The phenomenon is called WinRot. It's caused by lots of things: programs with sloppy uninstall routines that litter your hard drive with their leavings; conflicts between several different versions of the same DLL; Registry gunk; invisible startup programs; and more. [All of which are not a problem in OS X] Microsoft claims that it's got the problem on its radar, and that Vista will stop the rot. [rght... raise your hand if you buy it...] Vista will include a control panel applet that monitors system performance, and that will suggest what startup programs may be causing problems. Microsoft also says it's cleaning up the plumbing to fix the DLL conflict problem. And it's adding new features such as automatic disk defragmentation that it says will help as well. [they are focusing on cleaning up the problem after it happens, rather than preventing it] I'm only partially convinced. Some of the rot-stopping features, such as SuperFetch are essentially juiced-up versions of existing features, and don't seem as if they'll necessarily do much good. For example, even if you regularly defrag your system, it still slows down over time, and so automatic defragging won't solve the problem. [exactly] Still, it's heartening to know that Microsoft recognizes WinRot, and will at least partly solve it. On the other hand, the less WinRot there is, the less excuse there is to buy a new PC every year or two. Now on to my current question: The 7.0.2 update (released a few weeks ago) seems to have solve the Tiger issues Dan Van alluded to the use of RDC as a possible solution to my real estate - having to get a PC computer question. I have surfed around and googled around to learn about RDC. In the same context, VNP also usually comes up. If I used RDC, would I have to buy a PC, and then I'd leave it at the office? Then I would access it from my PowerBook? Would I still need Virtual PC running Windows to access a PC with RDC? This is a new idea for me, so I'm not very knowledgeable about it. I've found lots of forums of people asking questions. RDC and VNC (not VNP) are pretty much the same thing. 1) If you have RDC you do not need VirtualPC (*) 2) You need a PC with Windows XP Pro (not XP HOME) on it. 3) You would need a way to connect INTO the XP/Pro machine (usually this means port-forwarding through your router/firewall... which is easy to do, but if the machine is at the office then the IT guy has to set it up for you. If you have DSL/Cable at home you could setup the machine there. 4) If your office network does not have a static external IP (i.e. one you can use to know that you are connecting to your office network and not somewhere else), you'll need some way like dyndns.org to be able to connect whenever it gets a new IP (this is very common in business which have DSL/Cable connections). 5) You will need to make sure that the PC is not set to sleep (*) except as a backup in case you can't access the work PC via RDC Now I use RDC all the time to do little things. On the office LAN it's almost just as fast as sitting at the keyboard (in fact I have my Dell laptop Ethernet connected directly to my Powerbook at home and use RDC rather than leaning over and using the keyboard on the Dell laptop). RDC is a great tool (although the Mac version has some severe and stupid limitations compared to the Windows version :-/ but I would NOT use it if I were you. I would invest in a decent Dell laptop with Win XP Pro (SP2) on it and plenty of RAM and built-in wireless. I would install MS anti-spyware (free) on it. I would install AVG on it (see Google) I would never ever ever ever use Outlook Express. (and would use Outlook only if I absolutely had to) I would not use the machine for casual use, surfing around to random sites and installing ANYTHING ELSE on it except perhaps the latest version of Office (no suspicious shareware, no KaaZa, etc) And I would find that the machine and OS were remarkably stable. (This is what I do with my Dell laptop, a 650Mhz machine with 512 MB of RAM which has run pretty much problem free for over a year... because I only use it for the specific things I need it for: IE6 and ACT!) I don't know if the 12 has the same stuff as the 15, but here's what I do: Video: s-video from Powerbook to TV if your TV lacks s-video there is a little white wire that comes with the Powerbook that attaches to the s-video and gives a video RCA plug similar to the ones below (usually there's a little yellow circle on the end) Audio: you need a cord that will plug into the headphone jack or line-out on the Powerbook on one side, and has two RCA plugs on the other (usually one red and one white, by convention). You ought to be able to get one cheap at a Radio Shack or equivalent. What I am calling RCA plugs are the ones that normally are used to connect a consumer level VCR to a TV (back in the days before s-video especially). of course you can just listen to it from the Powerbook, but that does leave something to be desired. As for build quality, many Macs are now built by the same subcontractors that make PCs so there is no Mac advantage. Have you ever worked in manufacturing? Have any experience at all with contract work? suppliers? design? In software Macs are clearly far superior to Micro$oft's attempts, but Linux is reasonably user friendly WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP Big time Who are you kidding? alert. and will meet most peoples needs. Given the bugs in OSX, I sometimes wonder why I pay good money for upgrades when I could be having just as much fun tearing my hair out at 3 am trying to make it work running Linux for free... That's hilarious. Linux is still a playground for people who have more time than money. I like that even your own words indicate that you would be assured of tearing your hair out, but it would be free. So how much cost premium is a Mac worth? For the user on a tight budget with basic needs an old PC running Linux will do the job for less than the cost of a Mac. Correction: For the user on a tight budget with plenty of copious free time and a very high comfort level with computers and a willingness to dig under the hood of their computers. For me I figure a 20% premium over PCs is the most I'll pay extra for a Mac. For some, a Mac is a status symbol like a luxury car and they will pay any amount to obtain one... I've had my Mac for almost a year, and it has paid for itself in the time that I have spent using it rather than fixing it. Your average user is a complete myth. SuperDrive Dilemma
I'm trying to decide between MCE Lucid-M8X 8x DVD±R/RW + 2.4x Double Layer Portable FireWire Drive http://www.mcetech.com/lucidm8x.html $279 and MCE 8X SuperDrive Upgrade for PowerBook G4 with Double Layer Support http://www.mcetech.com/pbg4dvdr8dl.html $249 Obviously the portable Firewire one could be used with other computers (I don't have another one that I'd use it with currently, but you never know when another computer will show up ;-) But it's external, another thing to carry around, etc. The internal drive is easier to deal with. Basically that's the only advantage that I can see. It's a little cheaper, but then there's postage (to send it to MCE) or a service charge (if I find a local reseller who can install it). Assuming that I can find somewhere to install it, I assume they'd charge at least $30 to install it, and if I have to send it to MCE I'm going to be w/o my computer for a few days. So the price is a wash to me. I'm leaning towards the external. It's not very big, if anything goes wrong with it, it can be sent off for repair/replacement without leaving me w/o the use of my Powerbook, I can use it w/ other computers, no concerns about excess heat, and if I do go somewhere w/o it and need to burn a DVD-R, I still can do that. Anyone have other thoughts, esp. why I ought to consider the internal? Anyone else have one of these drives? -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Ok, from the time that the first Ti500s came out until it was fixed, there were Rev A problems. Once that was fixed, I would no longer consider that Rev A (maybe Rev A.1 or Rev A.01 or something). I'm not saying All of the entire batch of Rev A G5 Powerbooks will be bad What I am saying is, Given the history of Rev A products writ large [which have ranged from CD ejection to paint coming off to weak battery life / wifi signal], if you are looking to buy a Powerbook and will buy one of the first batch off the presses [Rev A.0], you have a much higher likelihood of running into problems than you do if you were to buy a G4 Powerbook at this point when the line is fairly well polished. Does buying Rev A guarantee you problems and buying Rev Z guarantee you won't have problems? Heck no. That said, Outlook Express for Mac used to have security problems, but I don't know if that was for OS9 or OSX (I believe it was OS9). Re: Older Powerbook G4
Is there going to be a G5 coming? Not likely, there are serious heat and power issues with G5's. The iMac is likely the smallest form factor G5 for a while OTOH the new iMac is nearly as portable as a 17 pb :-) The best insurance is to wait, though until the next big Apple-centric conference. MacWorld January is just around the corner. I'd not buy until then. agreed. Anything that comes out will almost certainly bring (even slightly) better specs. If nothing new is introduced, then you're not out anything. If something new does get announced, then you're in a position to decide if this is something you want, or if this is a good time to score a deal on a soon-to-be-discontinued model, although Apple's gotten really good at clearing the retail channels before the intro of a new model. which is good because what they have introduced has usually been such that most people would prefer the new. Another suggestion. Targus makes a nice laptop backpack. A) Doesn't look like a laptop bag (unless someone knows the name Targus) B) Frees your hands so you aren't tempted to put it down when looking at something else (or if you need to go to the bathroom you don't have to set your laptop bag down on the floor). Of course if you travel in a 3 piece suit, wearing a backpack is a bit of a fashion statement, but not having my Powerbook stolen is more important to me. One thing that is undeniable is that they are putting the screws to those who want to use their own version of Windows with VPC by delaying the release of the VPC without an OS. If you are selling VPC with Windows XP SP2 then there's 0 reason why you can't sell VPC without Windows If you have VPC ready to ship but are waiting for SP2 to be released, there's still no reason why you can't release the Windows 2000 version or the version without an OS. Then there's the reality that for every satisfied VPC user there's less of a need for them to run Windows. It's possible that it was a time crunch (although they delayed VPC by a significant amount of time, and then said it was Done, but we're not shipping it yet), so that really doesn't seem likely.
