Re: on line privacy [spam filtering]
It's all about how we use email, and how important timing is to us, I guess. On Feb 14, 2006, at 7:37 PM, Don P. wrote: IMO, the convenience of the filters (properly reviewed) far outweighs the rare occurance of an error. And I don't want to have to check on a web site a dozen times a day. Anything important will probably be followed up if it is lost. People that regard their correspondance as critical will continue to use the U.S. Postal service. Again--this depends on the nature of how we each use email. This is definitely not the case for me, and wouldn't work for me most of the time. I consider confirming a follow-up telephone call later today or tomorrow important, and certainly not something that can be done by snail mail. If someone emails me to say they need to change the time of our phone appointment, I don't want to call them at the "old" time or think that they "no-showed" on me. What kind of base station or WAP do you have? If it has an external antenna, you're in luck. There are hi-gain antennas avaiable, sometimes featured at <http://dealmac.com> for about $10. There are ominidirectional ones and directional. I tried an omnidirectional one first, but since my WAP is at one end of a long house and downstairs, and the place I often use my 15" AlBook is upstairs in a location with some interferrence, that didn't work well enough. I then got a Hawkings dirctional anteanna and that works much better for me. I also bought an antenna extension cable so I could mount the antenna in the optimal location, high up on a wall downstairs and pointing slightly upward. Re: Razor or Treo Bluetooth experiences
I've been using a Treo 650 for quite a while, and I like it a lot. The only drawbacks are the small keyboard, which takes a little getting used to, and the microphone isn't the best. I almost always use it with a Bluetooth headset (EZTalker from Tekkeon). Contrary to my experience with many other headsets, I find that I can hear people better and be heard better than when using the Treo without the headset. It does have a speaker phone, but with its tiny speaker, it's not the best sound quality in the world (and not at all private). I tried using Bluetooth to Hot Sync, but after using the cable (many times faster) I rarely do that any more. I use Palm Desktop, but I think it's also easy to Hot Sync with Address Book and iCal using The Missing Sync. Re: putting recording on PB
I think in order to make use of this, you have to have a wired connectin rather than using the speakerphone. Radio Shack sells an inexpensive (about $20 when I bought one) device that plugs in between the base and handset of a wired phone. It can be used to play recordings to others over the phone or to record a phone conversation. I have used it to record conference calls, and it works fine. Then once you have those messages recorded on an audio cassette, you can use Line Out or the headphone jack on the tape player and the microphone or line in jack on your PB. There's a free application called Audio Recorder that will do this easily. Re: security re: file sharing/networks
I've also recently noticed a LinkSys open network, and I'd like to know who it is so I could offer to help. I'm also surprised, since our house is several hundred feet away from the nearest neighbor. I guess they installed a high-gain antenna. I also use a (directional) high-gain antenna on my SMC Barricade G, so the signal can penetrate an area with high interference (which i haven't been able to identify). One of these days I'll walk around the neighborhood with MacStumbler on so I can figure out whose signal the LinkSys is, and make sure my signal doesn't reach the neighbors. Since I use an OS X 10.4.4 PowerBook and my wife uses an old clamshell iBook, we can't use (AFAIK) the same WEP encryption (and the iBook can't use newer security methods). I've figured it didn't matter since we're so far from neighbors and set back quite a bit from the road, but I guess I'll check. Re: bluetooth, AL-book, and Clie...
My best guess is that this is a software/firmware problem with the Clie, not the PB. I had a similar recurring problem in the past with a Kyocera smart phone using a cable (it did not have Bluetooth). Can you hot sync using the cable or cradle? If so, do that, and as an experiment, soft reset the Clie and try the Bluetooth hot sync again. If your experience is anything like mine, the novelty of using Bluetooth to hot sync may wear off very soon. I now have a Treo 650 and a 15" AlBook G4, 1.25 GHz. It takes me a minute or so to hot sync with the cable, and almost ten minutes via Bluetooth. This may be because of the number of applications and files I have (including Documents to Go with many files, as well as Acrobat Reader with several files). So I hardly ever use Bluetooth to sync any more. It is nice to have it available in case I need to and I don't have a cable handy, though. Re: Internet on Virtual PC
What version of VPC are you running? I'm running 6.1.1 on an AlBook 15" 1.25 GHz, 1GB RAM, with (if I recall) 512 MB of RAM assigned to VPC, running XP Pro SP2 with all the latest updates/patches. I find it the slowest computing experience I have ever had. Things take incredibly long, and sometimes so long that I'm not even sure the mouse click registered. I tried the site you mentioned (using their Dallas TX location) and got 5772/973. I find this quite hard to believe, since it is almost twice the rated speed I get from my Earthlink DSL service. I then tried and got 1579/315 from LinkLine in L.A., and 1796/333 from Speakeasy in Seattle. The latter two are believable. Switching back to Safari (which takes several minutes, since VPC seems to take forever to let go) I ran tests at the same sites: Speakeasy Dallas: 2122/307; Speakeasy Seattle: 2122/308; via DSLReports.com: Speakeasy Seattle 2062/312; LinkLine, L.A.: 2191/272. My take on this is that the Speakeasy test in Windows must be inaccurate, since even if Windows/IE has an advantage, I don't see how it's possible to get almost twice the nominal speed my DSL service offers. Re: External FW drives problems and Tiger?
There are two things to watch out for. One is whether the disk will be recognized (or mount). The other is whether the disk is bootable. The first is much less likely to be a problem, but I ran into the second when I bought two FireWire 80GB disks from IOGear. They were not bootable. I went several rounds with them claiming "we never advertised them as bootable" (which IMO is like selling a car without a fuel system, saying "we never advertised that it had a fuel system") before they agreed to replace them with bootable models. The only way I know (short of trial and error) is to get direct information from the drive manufacturer about this. Netgear "Pre-N" Wireless router
CompUsa.com has a deal I saw on dealmac.com for a Netgear WGM124 Pre- N Wireless Router for $40 after rebate. <http://dealmac.com/ artclick.html?92380,132898>. This router uses a preliminary version of the 802.11n standard, which provides for increased range ("up to 20%) and speeds over 802.11g. (It's backward-compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b.) Deal ends August 6. I've been frustrated with wireless range between my SMC Barricade (g) WAP and my 15" AlBook G4 since upgarding to Tiger and Airport 4.2. Signal strength is erratic, and drops off for a minute or so pretty regularly. This is the case in particular for the location where I use my PowerBook a lot (and need wireless connectivity to the Internet). I've tried resetting the SMC router, changing channels, power cycling it (dozens of times) and basically it's an annoyance and big time- waster. I've spent quite a few hours on the phone with their tech support (in India), and I'm convinced the easiest fix right now is the WAP and not the PowerBook since my wife's older clamshell iBook SE experiences the same signal variations and drop-offs even though it's less sensitive to therm than my PowerBook. (My guess is that the wireless signal has always had some variations, but I didn't notice them before since the signal didn't drop off completely. So I'm considering dropping $40 on this. Even a modest boost in signal strength or range would probably take care of this problem for me. Before I snap up this deal (which expires on 8/6) I thought I'd ask a couple of questions here. For those who have used Netgear wireless routers, what has your experience been with the device, tech support, etc.? CompUSA is also selling the NETGEAR Wireless PC Card, Pre-N, 802.11g, 802.11b for $30. <http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp? product_code=318438&pfp=XSELLPROD&xsfrom=318446&xsdesc=Pre%2DN +Wireless+Router> While I think I would be satisfied with improved 802.11g range/ performance, this does look tempting. However, it is listed as requiring "Windows® 2000, XP Pentium class notebook PC of 300 MHz or higher with an available PC Card slot." Does anyone know if this means it wouldn't work with the PC Card Slot in my PowerBook, or if it's just not something they support? Thanks! Getting the field to show up is easy as you say. But filling that field from address book as one fills other fields from address book does not seem to work. For the "To" and "CC" field one can simply click on a listing in address book. For "BCC" one must drag and drop. The original poster says this is a recent change. Seems a puzzlement that such a difference would occur. Thanks, Peter. I must have missed that first post. However, two things still puzzle me: 1. I don't see how an address is added to an email by clicking on it in Address Book. I started with this message, clicking in the To field. Then, in Address Book, clicking on an address does nothing except open that contact in the right-hand pane in Address Book. Double clicking opens a separate window for that contact in Address Book. Is this a matter of settings or preferences? I'm using Mail 2.0.2 and Address Book 4.0.2. So, since it has never worked for me that way for any Mail field, I apparently misunderstood the question. 2. Why use the Address Book in the first place? If you know the name of a person you want to send an email to, just start typing. If that person has more than one email address, a list will pop down; same thing for different recipients whose names begin with the same characters. The only time I use the Address Book is when I can't recall enough of the contact info to start typing it, or when I don't recall the name of a group I've created. Re: Synchronizing Treo 650
Thanks, Sionnach. On Jun 16, 2005, at 2:34 PM, Sionnach Aisling wrote: The main piece we had trouble with was VersaMail. Is that different than the built-in "Mail" application? So far at least, I have no plans to use the Treo for email. If I did, I'd have to get a separate email address that only a few people have. Otherwise, I'd get inundated with hundreds of email a day (I'm on quite a few lists). My wife wanted to be able to send/recieve email. Well, VersaMail comes wiht your Palm... sortof. Verizon recompiled Palm's install CD to make it "their own" and in doing so left out a LOT of the functionality for Macs. In fact, their own instruction manual (Verizon's) says Mac users will have to install VersaMail from the CD... But try to do that from a Mac... you can't. They didn't incorporate a Mac installer. I had to take my wifes Treo 650 upstairs, hook it up to my PC, pop the disk in and install VersaMail from there. After that, it would sync and work fine from her iBook. I don't have a PC, but I do have Virtual PC 6.x. I guess if I decide to try VersaMail, I could see if I could install that way. I was able to get mail to recieve, but not send. After quickly looking at the unit, I determined it was becasue she was sending over verizon's network, so our home ISPs SMTP Server setting wasn't working. Solution... I needed a SMTP server from Verizon. Called Verizon support... first mistake, my wife tells the lady she's running this on a Mac. Tech tells her this isn't supported on a Mac. (Verizon Doc says otherwise). She tried to explain that her problem was irrelevant to whateer operating system it was running on, but tech wasn't getting it... She finally gave me the phone in disgust. I finally determined that not only did the tech not know mac, they didn't know the Treo 650 either... only the 600 (which runs a different version of Versamail with far less features.) After holding the techs hand and leading her through all the settings in Versamail (wait, isn;t that her job??) She finally gives me the SMTP server name I need. Of course... she gave it too me wrong. I had to figure that out for myself. But all in all, i got it working. I guess I may come to you if I get to the point where I need the SMTP server. Is the default email address [EMAIL PROTECTED] Since the, my wife LOVES her Treo650. I'm even impressed with it, although I'm a graffiti guy and the 650 doesn't allow graffiti... just input from the mini-keyboard, which my fat fingers don't like :-) I've almost given up on thumb typing, even though the 650 supposedly has the sensitivity to distinguish between a fully pressed key and an accidentally pressed one. I do better holding the Treo in one hand and typing with the index finger of the other. I also understand that there's a third-party handwriting recognition program that's better than Graffitti (in that it lets you train it rather than requiring you to use a pre-determined method. I'll give the keyboard some more time before I try that out though. It's only been a couple of days. Thanks. I'll reply to you back channel about the Kyocera. Re: Opinion wanted
This won't help you this time around, but things like this are exactly why I pay for computer insurance through Safeware. It costs me $89 per year. The policy applies to all of my computer-related equipment, and even includes "stupidity." In other words, if I submerged my PowerBook in the bathtub or ran over it with my car, or if it were stolen, it would cost me $50 to replace it (assuming I understand the terms of the policy correctly). I just called them to check (e.g., to see what my coverage is) and found out I have one of the "original" blanket policies (I happen to have $8,000 in coverage overall, including all computer related equipment; they will write a check for the closest model/specs to what I lost/damaged; lower coverage amounts are available for less). They now have laptop coverage for $6 per $100 of coverage, and you can inquire about other coverage as well. <http://www.safeware.com/> 800-800-1492 Regards, Harry Corsover On May 19, 2005, at 1:54 PM, Laurent Daudelin wrote: So, what are my options here? If I uncheck the "Hide extension" checkbox in the info window, the extension comes back in the Finder. Keeping the Info window for that file opened, if I then proceed again to delete the extension, nothing happens but the "Hide extension" checkbox turns itself on automatically! The only way I can really remove it is by deleting the extension in the info window. Did anybody notice some similar behavior with extensions in Tiger? Re: Carbon Copy Cloner
How about another reminder -- ALWAYS run disk utilities on your backup drives (Disk Utility, DiskWarrior, etc.). While I had been doing this quite regularly on my internal drive, for some reason I spaced out doing this on my external backup drive. When the time came to restore from that backup, I found that it was too corrupted. Following that, I have become really thorough. The same thing happened to me (I posted about this previously). I trashed everything I could find related to WMP, downloaded a fresh copy and installed. It still won't play files it played fine before as well as files that play fine on a friend's PowerMac G5 dual 2MHz. We may be viewing mail differently. I use the main browser, and keep the upper-right window fairly small. In this view, the up or down arrows (if the message subject is highlighted; if not, tab to get there) go to the next or previous message (I keep messages sorted by date in descending order). If you use threading, click on the thread, and the right arrow takes you to the first unread message in the thread. Apparently, this doesn't work if you open an email in its own window. Re: PDF bar in Word 2004 ???
I asked the same question about Word v.X and Excel v.X and don't recall getting a response. When I close it in Word, documents move appropriately. In Excel, the spreadsheet moves up so the top bar (the only place to grab and move a document) is hidden by the top tool bar. I have to move that bar out of the way, resize the window, then move the tool bar back. Re: Receiving faxes-follow-up
OK . . . I have successfully received a few faxes. But: no notification/alert sound, and no emails. Now, the modem is stuck in a "Disconnecting..." loop and I can't seem to affect that. I've tried Nework Preferences (and force-quitting that) and Internet Preferences, to no avail. Loggin out doesn't do it. I seem to be in the unusual position of having to restart the PowerBook. I haven't had to do that much since using OS X. Any ideas about this? I'll have to restart before I can even send this message. So the OS doesn't use Mail to create that email? (If it did, it would sit in my Out box until I went online again.) Thinking about this, it's kind of weird, unless one has both a DSL connection and a phone line plugged into the Mac (which would tie me to my desk, rather than my usual roaming around my house using Airport). A fax comes in, over the only line available, and the OS tries to send an email by some means other than the default email program. It can't, and generates no error message? Receiving faxes
I'm using an Aluminum PowerBook G4, and my DSL service just went down. So, I'm using the phone line that usually connects to my fax machine to go online via dialup. I've set up Faxing to receive, Modem to notify me of incoming calls when connected to the internet, to play an alert sound when receiving a call, and to send me an email notifying me of the fax. A friend sent a fax a while ago, and I didn't get any notification (that I'm aware of; I may have been away from the computer at that time). I called him and he said he sent it and got confirmation, so I checked my Faxes folder, and there it was. I don't know if I was online at the time, but I'm assuming that I can't be online and receive a fax at the same time. Is this a correct assumption? Does anyone know what the Subject, Sender, or body text will be/contain when I'm sent an email that a fax has been received? Re: Need help creating a live link in email
Thanks for the suggestion, Laurent, but I think this would defeat the purpose of what I'm trying to send. Many people block attachments, or won't take the time to open or download them. Re: Need help creating a live link in email
Almost, but not quite. I want a link that reads "Click Here" or some such thing, not something that looks like a URL. I want it to flow within the sentence. I know it's possible I see it all the time. It's a snap in Windows Outlook/Outlook Express. Even friends who barely know how to use a computer do it with ease. AOL has a little "heart" icon (or so I'm told; I haven't used it for many years) that makes it a snap. But it seems that in OS X, neither Mail nor Entourage can do this. Need help creating a live link in email
OK -- fourth try. This time I'll leave out anything resembling a real hyperlink, and I've double-checked that this is a plain text only message.. I'm resending this because my previous message contained a live link (or something else that made it appear to be "multipart/alternative:, and the list accepts only plain text. I hope this one goes through. -- I've been trying to create a live web link in email, both in Apple Mail and Entourage (MS Office X). I've looked at some HTML tutorials, and seen the underlying code when I receive a link like this: (I can't put in the code, since that will ensure that my message gets bounced again). What's visible is something like "Click Here" and the underlying code is a specific lengthy URL. The specific coding is something I got off of a good HTML tutorial (and works on the web, but not so far in email). But whenever I send an email with code like this, the actual code is visible (both for me in Mail and Entourage, even with View HTML enabled) and for other recipients. I use Mail almost exclusively, but I set up my account information in Entourage so I could try it out. In Entourage, I set up outgoing mail to be HTML. I even tried using open and close html tags in Mail, but it had no effect. When others send me a link with this type of code, it shows up properly for me in Mail (i.e., all you see is "Click Here" but clicking takes me to the correct web page in Safari). This is even true when people have copied what I wrote and sent it back to me. Someone else using Outlook Express said there's a button you can use to create links like this. Rather than download yet another email program I don't want to use (and would have to use in Classic), is there any way to accomplish this in Mail or Entourage? Thanks!
