Yes I agree... it's a shame. I tried to run a few of the other beta maps but
they never showed up on Quickplay so the likelihood that they would get
played was super rare.

And beta maps are still valve server exclusive for quickplay? :(

At the moment I can't even find any valve servers for it using quickplay.

2014-12-09 Thread Frank
This isn't the Xmas update so perhaps in a few weeks they can make amends by
releasing the map anyway?
Personally I'd like to see a map that is geared towards 32player counts and
faster re-spawn. At this point in the game's history I don't see why not
considering the power modern computers/servers have now to run the extra
weight. I refuse to play on any server that doesn't have fast re-spawn as I
don't wish to waste my small amount of playing time sitting in spawn watching
others play while I wait to get back into the action.

I too am disappointed with this update, so much that I'll most probably be
spending my money on some other games this month. I thought there would be more
to the winter season/event than just duck collecting and some new items (mostly
cosmetics). A map would've certainly been nice. Oh well, people can't expect
everything I guess - especially when there are bugs that still haven't been
fixed for weeks or months.

Re: [hlds_linux] Recommendation for TF2, DoD:S, etc server content downloading

2014-12-04 Thread Frank
Over writing the map with the same name as Valve does it really shouldn't make
no difference. You are going to upload another map regardless another file be
it named _v1 or _v2 or whatever. You are still uploading content customized
from the server to the clients.

The idea here is if I have a customized map made by me named My_Tf2_Map then I
should be able to alter the map no matter when and upload the exact same name
and have it over write the original to clients that revisit my servers. This
should be allowed vs me having to use extensions to the name like My_Tf2_Map_v1
or My_Tf2_Map_v2 to continue on like that is just counter productive.

I really don't think what you are doing is something that you should be doing.
Modifying maps is wrong, map maker didn't want your logos in there so they
should not be there and i bet 99% of the real mapmakers don't want their maps
edited for something that they did not do.
Besides, decompiling breaks several things. You can add decals to the maps
without modifying maps too.

PS: Soundscapes are somewhat broken and Valve is aware.

+1 this for sure. I'd love to see the custom content over write much like
Valve over writes maps and its content now when a revision bump is made.
I get so tired of having to go thru _v1 or v32 etc etc when you change just
the smallest thing on a map. The client has to re-download it anyway cause
of a new name, may as well make it over write and start over.

Subject: [hlds_linux] Recommendation for TF2, DoD:S, etc server content
downloading

This email is mostly addressed to anyone within Valve that's still
maintaining the TF2 branch of the source engine, and I suppose anyone on
this mailing list that'd like to comment on this recommendation.

There's one frustrating issue with clients downloading custom content (maps,
models, etc) in particular: it's fairly painful when unaware mappers and
server operators release or update maps (and other content) without
modifying the filename of the content. For maps this is particularly
destructive because many clients would be left unable to connect and play on
the server in question if the map differs from what the server is running.

Additionally, there are some documented cases of clients having their map
downloads not get fully completed or get into a corrupt state which is
equally as painful for the same reasons. Many users are simply unaware of
how to solve this problem by locating and deleting the files in question.

I'm sure this is something that can get an ideal solution, so I'd like to
propose a few:

1. If the content differs, force a redownload and overwrite the existing
file on the client. Now that clients have a separate search path for
downloaded content thanks to Fletcher's hard work in refactoring custom
content and downloads search paths, there's less risk to overwriting stock
game content.

2. Allow multiple downloads side-by-side, perhaps differing in filename by a
checksum (or some other recommendation). This would probably have to be
virtualized in some way so that the filesystem is aware of the actual name
of the map for soundscripts, particle manifests, etc.

This issue affects other content such as models and materials, but getting a
solution for at least map downloading would be a great step forward.

Anyone else having the issue with people putting up a vote for scramble
teams on the eventmix or mix of event maps for Halloween?

I got this in my config:
sv_vote_issue_scramble_teams_allowed 0
sv_vote_issue_restart_game_allowed 0
sv_vote_issue_changelevel_allowed 0
sv_vote_issue_nextlevel_choicesmode 0
sv_vote_issue_nextlevel_allowextend 0
sv_vote_issue_nextlevel_allowed 0

I could have sworn having them at 0 prevents them from launching that.. this
is the vote that you see very large left side with F1 or F2 for selection.
It's as if this is being bypassed even though the settings are 0

This could be easily solved by simply enabling the box by default for a
player's first 5 hours or so of playtime, then unchecking it (or presenting
them with a dialog prompting them to disable it to check out the community
aspect of TF2, which they could decline).

I disagree. People who don't change settings and land on a bad server will
assume that Valve messed up. So it makes sense to put those players on
"default" servers.

Look, it's server owners who didn't play by the rules who created this
problem. Valve fixed it in the way they could do it without eating up way
more time&people resources. I like the situation now way better than before,
where I had to keep blacklists to even be able to play sanely.

This is also missing the point. Even while playing I can get several
annoying messages all over my screen (yes, they are text only, but no less
annoying) bothering me to pay for this oh-so-great server. This is nothing
anyone wants to see who hits quickplay.

Ok I see this over on teamfortress.com...

"Luckily, you can now play previous years' Halloween spectaculars to get

hop into multiplayer and quickplay any of our past five Scream Fortress
updates. If you've missed out on previous Team Fortress Halloweens, or are
new to TF2 in general, this is a perfect time to catch up."

You direct people to Quickplay yet again this defaults directly to Valve
servers first! How about - Hop into multiplayer and search the server
browser instead?
Also while on the subject is there a particular reason why I have players
screaming at me about drop rates for spells and such? I go to check on a few
of my servers last night to only get slammed by why gifts aren't dropping as
they used to and if there was something broken with the servers.

Most of them are either too stupid or don't care enough to play the game
long enough to explore for other things.

I've talked with many new players (usually because they add me to "sell"
stuff). A lot of them are not even aware that there's custom maps.
Simply because server browser is too hard to use/slow and there's no such
customization on quickplay.
Even old time players prefer to use quickplay when they want to feel good so
they can stomp on new players seen on valve servers.

Re: [hlds_linux] "Temporary" Quickplay changes ... 8 months later

2014-10-02 Thread Frank
That is kinda ignorant of a response when the topic is very concerning to
just about anyone that runs community servers.

I agree that the quickplay changes should be done to reflect towards
community servers now vs Valve mostly since as noted that you won't see a
HTML MOTD when using Quickplay now anyway.

Valve uses the community to make and create all these nice items they are
putting out lately...letting everyone else do their work for them yet they
won't recognize the help of the server side aspect of it and push traffic
towards them vs leaving them on a deserted island of Valve (plain and bland)
Servers.

I'd love to see this change implemented for Halloween, hell I've been
running the Asteroid map 24/7 and I can't even find it on the quickplay list
if you go to select the map outside of Valve servers so what is the point of
me testing it?

I don't see the discussion as spam at all, just more of a wakeup call to
Valve over a 6 year old game now supported mostly by the Community.

Re: [hlds_linux] Mandatory TF2 update released

2014-10-01 Thread Frank
That is stupid! The updates are for the game and Valve has no reason to
watch for options that when changed may cause Sourcemod problems!

Update and wait for SM to update like everyone else as there is nothing
wrong with the game itself.

Re: [hlds_linux] HLSW Alternatives

2014-08-29 Thread Frank
HLSW is good for mostly quick and simple management. I've tried to contact
their dev's a few times but no luck on any type of reply from any form of
contact.
The layout and amount of options it has available makes it nice to use so
any alternative needs to be as well developed and not just thrown together.

That's perfectly reasonable if you have direct access and don't want extra
functionality, but hlsw is nice because it allows multiple people with only
rcon to access the server, and displays useful info and options for
manipulating players and other aspects of the server.

2014-08-27 Thread Frank
You can't argue with him..I have no idea why I even replied.

You said it though "Default Quickplay Settings" - Valve needs to take the
default settings off of Valve servers as targets and apply them to the
Community servers or just mix them up so they are all showing up not just
Valve servers.

dan, you don`t get the point of this discussion. While old bad servers are
full of players, new good servers can`t get players not because they are
bad, but because players don`t want to open server browser and look for a
good server. (Im not saying that all old servers are bad and all new servers
are good) New players don`t even know how to search a nice server, they are
not familiar with that. They are just using default quickplay settings. Old
players also don`t use serverbrowser, as they have already found a servers
community to regular on.

Re: [hlds_linux] [hlds] New SteamID format for TF2

2014-08-27 Thread Frank
Pushing USA players to EU is a problem on its own that can be dealt with.

You can make servers better but at the end of the day if Valve makes it
difficult for people to find them then there is no point.
Options are auto checked for Valve servers, I have a Vanilla Asteroid server
up and it hardly ever gets touched when you have Valve Asteroid servers that
are slammed full.
This Asteroid server I have is better than a Valve server of equal location
and managed better.

Nope - they need less Valve servers, lets push traffic to the Community -
the same community that is keeping the game alive.

No it wouldn't. It's already bad enough when USA players get put on European
servers with 150+ pings.

If anything they need a few more.

If you can't get players then make your servers better don't ask Valve to
force or push players onto your server.

Re: [hlds_linux] [hlds] New SteamID format for TF2

2014-08-27 Thread Frank

It would be nice to see Valve decrease the amount of Valve servers - perhaps
one of those guys will chime in here and let us know the current amount and
if they plan on decreasing any. A little help from Valve to push players to
Community servers would be nice. Issue is the constant complains and
bickering on SPUF when it comes to any change in this regard. They just
don't understand if it wasn't for the Community you wouldn't have a now 6
year old game as popular as it still is.

The Quickplay change was supposed to be a temporary measure, but it's not
looking very temporary while Valve servers suck up about 45% of traffic.

Today's Team Fortress 2 update says goodbye to the good old SteamIDs
(STEAM_0:1:15160181) and says hello to AccountIDs ([U:1:30320363]).

Sadly, this change breaks all things depending on SteamIDs (SourceMod,
custom ban systems, donator slots, rank systems, etc.)

Re: [hlds_linux] Mandatory TF2 update released

2014-07-30 Thread Frank
Is it just me or can anyone else see or find thru Quickplay any Community
run servers that are running the Asteroid map?
Reason I'm asking is cause I run one and no matter what I do I can't select
community servers on the beta maps such as this.
If this is in fact the way it is can Valve please fix this so players can
also choose to avoid Valve servers if they would rather play on community
run servers.

[hlds_linux] Asteroid console spam

2014-07-14 Thread Frank
Is anyone else seeing this type of spam on the console from the new Asteroid
map? I'm running it on a 24/7 server but when its empty for a few hours it
seems to flood the console with the same type messages over and over again.

Bad SetLocalAngles<0.0,-360014,50,0.00> on
blue_bot1b_spawn_robot

Etc etc etc as seen in the picture.it just never stops till you restart the
server or the map maybe, didn't try that but still it's likely an issue with
this map.

Screen shot of it below:

2014-07-08 Thread Frank
I see them but I only see Valve Beta Servers - I can't seem to find a way to
select Community run Asteroid servers thru the quick play menu.

In fact I can't seem to select Community run pl_cactuscanyon servers
either... this is why Community servers should have been prechecked by
default or at least have that option show up clear as a bell first.

Is there a reason rd_asteroid isn't appearing in the Beta Quickplay?
You can only find servers with pl_cactuscanyon on it.

Hmmm.. trying to figure-out if this is just my TF2 server(s), or something
bigger.
But, ever since today's update - I'm a getting a lot of issues with client
connections timing-out, etc.
The server never crashes - it just keeps running.
But the clients get the "connection problem" warning in the upper-right for
several seconds (5-20), then (mostly) get back in without having to
disconnect/reconnect.

Anybody else experiencing a lot of this since today's update?

PS: For me this is under Linux (Debian).

Re: [hlds_linux] String table overflow and other errors

2014-06-20 Thread Frank
Yep I reported this to the list yesterday I think. The error isn't so much
as crashing servers but its causing them to basically crash clients and then
sometimes the server won't allow players to enter and will give this error
unless map is reset.

This should be an easy fix since its already an issue that was addressed, I
hope its patched today rather than have it spoil the whole weekend.

Also what is going on with the Item server? I've had so many of my players
complain and just stop playing because of it.

Any chance of looking into perf issues when a full server gets in the middle
of a conga taunt? Haven't had a chance to run any vprof profiling, but the
netgraph shows large spikes in what seems to be sounds, and it's followed by
lots of client choke.

Re: [hlds_linux] Unannounced TF2 update? or something else going-on?

2014-04-19 Thread Frank
I ran a check on one server - just validated everything with no update so
not sure what you saw but the likely hood of Valve releasing an update to
TF2 on a weekend let alone Easter Weekend is about the same as me getting
struck by lightning several times in 1 day.

I don't actually see any announcement in TF2 update page about an update.
But, my Steam client today said that it needed to download and install a
TF2 update. So, I let that commence, and went to check my TF2 servers.

On the server side, it looked like there was about ~100-MB of stuff to
download, but it errored-out. Then, I noticed the client-side update
errored-out also.

I ran the update on the server-side again, and this time it said "Success!
App '232250' already up to date." - as if there was no longer any mystery
~100-MB update? Thankfully, I didn't run this against my production servers
yet - just a test instance.

The client-side update keeps cycling between "Updating" and "Queued" like
repeatedly in a way I have not seen before.

I am hoping this is not a repeat of what happened to Counter-Strike the
other day - or anything remotely similar?

[hlds_linux] Item server issues still??

2014-02-21 Thread Frank
Ok over the last few weeks EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND, I see clients complaining
about not being able to trade and item server issues pretty much all weekend
and every weekend. This even happened over the past week several times. Now
this may sound like a client complaint cause well it is sorta but for many
people this is very important when running servers as the player counts will
differ depending on if they can access the item server or not. I'm seeing no
drops thru the console so I'm not seeing this as an issue I can control.

Is anyone else seeing this problem and how its effecting player counts?

Re: [hlds_linux] Mandatory TF2 update released

2014-02-11 Thread Frank
Does not work everytime and isn't working this time I can assure you that.
I've just told them they will have to wait - no idea what the server is
doing to give updates out but I've yet to have them myself and its damn
annoying when I can't get in to test my servers myself.

Re: [hlds_linux] Important changes to TF2 coming soon

2014-02-05 Thread Frank
I agree here, the "official servers" box needs to be UNCHECKED by default
not the other way around. This needs to take effect with the update tomorrow
to go ahead and fix this problem as so many have expressed over the last
week.

This wasn't even mentioned by Fletch in the recent mails tonight or from
anyone at Valve over the course of this past week and the countless mails
sent thru this mailing list from the majority of owners not happy about it.
The data shows it causes issues when left checked by default - just uncheck
it and let people decide after the fact.

___
If the default "official servers" box isn't going to be removed, community
servers will still be cut off from the majority of new players, whether they
qualify or not. The new guidelines for quickplay also make it impossible for
server owners to support or stand out.

Re: [hlds_linux] Fletcher - I'm Calling you Out On This (Enough is Enough)

2014-01-24 Thread Frank
Valve created steam groups, ways for people to join communities and many
many people take advantage of this to be a part of something.
This act of being a part of something adds depth to the game and that is
what communities have to offer.

This change Valve did needs to go - period.
I'm with the rest here, there needs to be a response from Valve and soon not
just do the norm of releasing an update and then go away for the weekend
leaving everyone hanging.

_
It's a changing demographic - people just want to play videogames, not
really sign up for a whole 'favorite server loyalty program'.

And who cares if our servers "die out"? What are we out? Ego?

Re: [hlds_linux] Prevent game servers from redirecting players to alternate servers when players connect through quickplay

2014-01-24 Thread Frank
Unchecking the box by default is the only option aside from remove this
added feature.
Type up a bunch of a response all you want but my first reply to this is
just that - it needs to go.

Ohh chocolate cake tastes good and I just made one while running my servers
:)

_
I just joined a valve server with quickplay and 'official servers'
checked to play 2fort.

The experience of joining is pretty good. Fast and I got a server with a low
ping that played well.

All I can say to the folks here is though, if you can't compete with a Valve
server, switch off your servers and bake cakes to sell because you're in the
wrong game.

It was a complete farce. Barely anyone knew how to cap, where to cap, or
what the objectives were. Neither team had any defence, certainly no
engineers.

I was told what I was doing was "impossible" (i.e shooting nades at people
and hitting them)

So, relax. No one who sits facing the shiny side of their monitor will be
playing on Valve servers via quickplay for any length of time because the
servers are swamped with the confused and bewildered.

You can (as I have in the past) jump from valve server to valve server and
find a decent round, but you'd spend all day doing that with the quickplay
button joining random servers.

Who knows, perhaps the official checkbox will mix up the player base and
change that, but right now that doesn't appear to be the case.

Re: [hlds_linux] Prevent game servers from redirecting players to alternate servers when players connect through quickplay

2014-01-24 Thread Frank
I agree with this 100% - WHY??
Having this to start with is a community killer then you tack on having it
checked by default.

I don't think Valve understands that without the support of communities the
player counts for games like TF2 will start to diminish much faster, faster
than they can produce more pointless additions to the game. My only hope is
this change is reverted asap and the future shows more community support
well before they release a new character to play as.

Why?

Adding a "Valve servers only" checkbox (that's checked by default) is going
to hurt enough (and only those communities that are playing by the rules;
cheating communities will just steal *more* traffic from the legitimate
communities).

It's now all but impossible to try to retain a client who joined via
Quickplay (and those are the clients we *need* to retain). We can't show
them our website. We can't even allow them to use a menu to jump to another
one of our servers anymore.

Please think about what you're doing. If your intention is to harm the good
communities, you're doing a fine job at it.

Anyone know the answer to this problem or is this just something that

I keep getting reports on it from my clients/players but I have no answer

happening when on any server just when the client starts up TF2 or the game.

I think the cubemap data is stored in tf/materials/maps if i remember
correctly. After it's there and cubemaps are built, they are saved to the
bsp. I got some error on my old pc upon that event and it always failed. I
could have packed them manually with pakrat or similiar but i didn't trust
they would work from there. So i had friend build them for me and it worked
fine.

Now of course, it works as it should.

Tried this on two different PC's of my own and another tried it still not
working. Now I did test against a few older style maps and they built just
fine. The issue appears to resolve around the map then. Would be some causes
as to why they won't write to the BSP and last is where to find them when
they are written by TF2 as where the cubemap data is stored till the write
is done? Perhaps we can pull it manually and add it manually to the map.

If you can make out my notes to self, see if this may help.

Compile and load your map.

mat_specular 0

This turns off reflections.

buildcubemaps

The game will pause for a second, and lots of little pictures will flash up
the top of the screen.

disconnect

If you are not using HDR, you can step to step 11

mat_hdr_level 0

Turn off HDR.

map "your_map_name"

Load the map again

buildcubemaps

disconnect

mat_specular 1

mat_hdr_level 2

map "cp_dustbowl"

We need to load another map, to clear the caches of your map contents,
otherwise it will not reload any of the cubemaps.
Disconnect again, and load up your map. Enjoy!

[hlds_linux] Map structure/Building Cube maps

2014-01-02 Thread Frank
I'm having issues trying to run another map on my servers and building cube
maps, basically they are not building at all so I can't get the glossy feel

not showing up in any form.

Does anyone at Valve or on this mailing list have any idea why or a

Also to note: I'm following this wiki just as I've always done in the past -

Re: [hlds_linux] Mandatory TF2 update released

2013-11-01 Thread Frank
Every year is the same thing, we spend 2-3 days if not longer thru several
updates to fix issues from this and other large updates like it. Never in
the last few years have they ever extended the event just for this although
I agree I believe they should. Issue I have with just even asking is the
event itself was delayed way too long and too close to Halloween (which is
now gone). The Xmas update IMO should be released no later than the 2nd week
of December to at least give the holiday feel as with most of us we can't
wait for the 25th to come and go - at least that is how I feel, too much
holiday food will kill anyone.

Re: [hlds_linux] [hlds] Family Sharing Ban Bypass.

2013-10-26 Thread Frank
Been trying to follow this discussion, sounds interesting no matter what
comes however I know myself and the other server owners are really wanting
to know of the impending ETA of the Halloween 2013 Event? Year after year we
have to spend the next 24hours trying to adjust and fix things that get
broken by this update so a little information for an ETA would be helpful
and would certainly make all of SPUF happy in the process.

I've seen suggestions tossed around to keep this game going strong into the
next few years but the biggest suggestion of them all was to add a new
character to the game. Not only would this spur a major creation of new maps
to revolve around it but the items and functions of not only that new
character but the others would be wide open for additions. This in turn
keeps a major source of funding to Valve from the store purchases but also
the player base which is still very strong happy for a few more years.

That last paragraph I figured I'd toss in from what I've been reading around
but the main question remains: Possible ETA of the Halloween 2013 Event
please?

Thanks

In case anyone is following this, there's a WebAPI update planned for next
week which allows for getting the owner's account from a lender id.

There's also a Steamworks update planned for between yesterday and (?),
which adds the owner's id to the ticket verification result
(ValidateAuthTicketResponse_t). However, this is too late for servers to get
the owner's id. SourceMod at the moment supports checking if they're
verified (by not handing out admin before IsClientFullyAuthenticated
happens). However, this happens far too late in the process (30 seconds
typically to a couple minutes, to never if Steam is down), subsequently most
servers (to my knowledge) have the feature disabled (or at least want it
disabled; from the threads I've seen).

After the Steamworks update happens, I believe we need the owner's accountid
passed to the server at the same time as the actual rendered SteamID (how it
is at the moment, sent from the client at connection time).
This should allow for the same verification result as
IsClientFullyAuthenticated, and pre-usage that most of the engine does.
This should continue to allow for immediate usage, which is what is used
now.

A public engine function would be appreciated to get the owner's account id
(or rendered SteamID, as to conform with everything else). Unless if I'm
neglecting something major, this should resolve the exploit for everyone as
clients are updated to support sending the supposed ownerid.

Thanks,
Kyle.

Re: [hlds_linux] Add something to the game so that server ops can ban HWID too.

2013-08-26 Thread Frank
I would love to see Valve finally step up after all these years and let you
assign an IP#/port directly to a domain and change it with it to carry over
upon a needed change.

I've had to do an IP# change about several months ago and the server was
widely popular, still is but people are still to this day coming in and
saying "Wow I lost it on my friends list/history and I just thought it died
and I didn't know you guys had a website blah blah blah.." Same thing over
and over again yet they wouldn't have missed a beat had we had this support
years ago.

As for the main discussion on HWID, I don't have that much of an issue to
need this not sure there is a huge need either.

Re: [hlds_linux] [hlds] TF2: New exploit in today's update

2013-07-11 Thread Frank
Lots of things to be addressed for sure - but I'll tell you what. The change
to needles on the crossbow was just flat out stupid. It is called a
"CROSSBOW" for a reason which I've yet to fire a needle out of mine so why
Valve..what was the purpose on screwing with that besides the fact that it
broke when you play with it on MvM and looks like laser beams from rapid
fire.

Nice new way to crash a server after last update(s?).
Requires 2x spy. 1spy with tape recorder, 2nd spy with normal saper. 1x
sentry or 1x tele or 1x disp. Spys should put their sappers in the same time

Was this fix to be pushed out today or did I miss it last night as I've not
seen one.

Not sure if its related but when you are viewing the kits and let's say you
are using a scorching effect it looks all blocky over the head or hat.
I've not seen this cause a crash but just throwing it out there if we are
still waiting on this perhaps its tied in together or something else needed
to be addressed.

Re: [hlds_linux] Mandatory TF2 update released

2013-05-18 Thread Frank
Well there is this and another issue I reported on here about the trade
server and its system. I get many complaints and have seen this before but
it's nothing I can control. When you've completed a trade and you have
another trader sending one you used to be able to pick it right up without
viewing the items but if you press let's say "K" to accept the incoming
trade after the previous it pushes the items in your face you received first
so you have to close this and accept the other incoming trade.

I hated to ramble on in that sentence but I really do not know how else to
explain it but this changed within the last few months after another update
but I have no idea how to control it client side or server side. Pretty
annoying to say the least be it someone they complain to or a player so can
this be fixed back?

Does anyone else have issue with unusual effects after death? I got unusual
handyman for pyro with peace sign and when i get killed and watch my
teammates from 3rd person i see my peace sign over their heads. I went on
couple different servers and even on servers without any addons and i had
that. I also launched 100% clean and new tf2 testing server without SM/MM
etc. (no addons or anything. just a clean, default installation) and went
there with 3 of my friends who also had unusual hats and everybody had that
bug.

Wearing unusual hat -> you die or get killed -> you spect on your teammates
in 3rd person after death waiting for respawn and you keep seeing you effect
over their heads. If they have their own unusual hat you see 2 effects. This
does not happen when joining the spectator team. Only after death waiting
for respawn.

This is not related to this update. I saw that about 1 maybe max 2 months
ago but i didn't get any reply on the group.

Hopefully this time someone will at least confirm that they are having the
same issue and maybe valve could try to fix this.

[hlds_linux] Server or Item server issue?

2013-04-20 Thread Frank
I have users reporting and I've seen this myself that when they obtain an
item from a trade the information isn't instantly displayed on the screens.
Also it seems that unless the user is pressing the default or selected
button to display the traded item and a follow up trade request is being
sent that the item is then displayed on the screen to all when they select
to trade with the other person.

This sounds rather stupid and I feel stupid for asking (is hard to explain)
since I'm sure it's an issue or something changed with the item server but I
could be wrong and this could be something that is sending/receiving
information from the server itself to the item server upon connection to
steam.

Can someone either verify they have seen this or explain it better so Valve
can look into it?

Thanks

Re: [hlds_linux] More reliable support for server IP changes

2013-04-06 Thread Frank
This X1000 - I just changed IP#'s of two of my servers and the player count
has dropped by 70% and is slowly going back up cause its taking players a
while to find the change. I had no choice but to change the IP#'s or
location of those two servers but now its hurting and its time Valve done
something with regards to having it save in the server browser.

Instead of taking things away like the MOTD changes that so many if not the
majority of server owners are against how about adding something like this
to help us.

Subject: [hlds_linux] More reliable support for server IP changes

I would like to leave my opinion here for Valve to consider.Probably all of
us server admins know the frustration with having to change our servers IP's
either because of a migration, changing from a unreliable hosting,
datacenter change, etc...We also know that even though we can connect and
add a hostname to favorites ir doesn't update if the IP changes (at least
the last time I checked) and it should, for the obvious reasons mentioned
above. So that change I think it's been overdue and I can see no good reason
for it not being like that since day one. That way, players who connect
through the hostname wouldn't even notice that the IP changed. But even with
that, the people who added "Current server to favorites" only added the
current IP of the server.
So, even better than that would be to have a aditional server id system that
could be used to keep track of servers, so that a specific serverID would
always point to the server IP:Port of the server that has that specific
tf_server_identity_account_id in the config. Then, players could connect to
that serverID that would also be automatically be updated in the favorites
if the IP:Port changed. With that, when a server has to change IP, no player
would lose track of that great server that mysteriously disapeared from
their favorites and server administrators wouldn't have to flood every of
their players that they can reach telling that the IP of their server(s)
changed while seeing that effort in vain while losing part of the players
that never came back.I've been through that, and other probably have too. So
this would be a favorable update for everyone. Hope I can see something done
about this soon.

2013-04-04 Thread Frank
I enjoy running TF2 servers, I have a decent job to support them but me
putting some ads on them so you only view when you join (this is how I had
them setup) then why should that shame on me for trying to at least recover
the costs of running them. I'm not talking about a profit, I'm lucky to
break even every month. I can be trusted just fine to run well managed and
fast servers for players to play on FREE, them viewing an ad one time when
they join for a few seconds isn't going to hurt nobody and is no different
than television companies do with the ads. If you wish to have tags in
place then fine but tags shouldn't disqualify my servers from getting
traffic be it browser or quickplay as someone else already put it most kids
are too stupid to know how the server browser works so you have to depend on
quickplay/match making to get traffic to your servers. You can't expect to
be able to advertise them on SPUF - you get instant banned for even typing
out an IP# or name of servers so a lot of help Valve is in that regard.

If people cannot be trusted to run a server for a free game without blasting
users with ads then I hardly doubt they will play nice and put the proper
tags in place informing people that they are about to blast you with ads.

Re: [hlds_linux] Mandatory Team Fortress 2 update released

2013-04-04 Thread Frank
They clearly listened to SPUF and all its crying over having to watch a few
seconds of ads to support well managed servers they enjoyed playing. I'm
surprised a few comments didn't include most of them thinking money grows on
trees or falls from the sky like rain drops.

A lesson in simple economics I think is needed to teach most of those kids
the facts of life and the understanding that running these servers are NOT
free and the money has to come from some place.

As for uses well that's collateral damage to Valve whom again obviously only
listened to the crying that went on within SPUF.

I agree the implemented solution is not acceptable when there are better
alternatives.

We use MOTD panels for 3 main things:
1. General server/community info, and a list of our other servers (default
MOTD).
2. Rules - accessed by typing "!rules". We also have a plugin that displays
this panel to players when admins issue them warnings or timeouts for rule
violations.

3. Donate information panel. Also accessed only on request (!donate or
something like that)

4.Radio (but not relevant since it's donators only).
I think if a confirmation dialog is implemented, it should also have an
option for a short text string that lets the user see WHY the server wants
to display a MOTD to them. e.g. "This server is trying to show you a MOTD
for: Server Rules" or "This server is trying to show you a MOTD for:
Sourcetunes Radio". Do you wish to view it?

I'm surprised valve went ahead and implemented the solution they did, given
the extensive discussion in the list about disabling MOTDs (before it went
to pot).

I think this might actually be possible. (Cannot confirm for sure.)
Somebody ought to give it a try and see what happens (when the server is
released, that is). Just delete the directory with the name that's a big
hash, and then run an update (make sure to specify "validate") which will
validate all the files.

But just a reminder that there won't be a stampede. We'll give people
plenty of time to download and configure their server.

Re: [hlds_linux] [hlds] SteamPipe is coming. Download the TF beta

2013-02-20 Thread Frank
I'm not really familiar with this tool , but will it allow you to set a
region to download from much like the clients can do now? Reason I ask is
that sometimes certain locations are faster on the download when a large
update comes out vs how it is now and the update tool just searches for a
"Hand shake" to get the data.

This confusion may stem from the assumption that this tool exists solely to
download a dedicated server. Actually the tool is essentially a command

Subject: [hlds_linux] SteamPipe is coming. Download the TF beta

The orangebox engine games (Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike:Source, Day of
Defeat:Source, HL2:Deathmatch) are being upgraded to SteamPipe. Steam's
new-and-improved content delivery system. SteamPipe is currently used by
most games on Steam.

This change will impact server operators in at least two significant ways:

* You will use steamcmd instead of the HLDSUpdateTool to
install/update the server.

* The conversion will entail significant changes to the way the
files appear in the local filesystem on the server and client. The client
no longer uses GCF files. Instead, most assets are packed up into VPK, and
those VPKs are the same on the server and the client. The server no longer
uses 1000's of loose files.

We're using the TF beta to test these changes and identify the bugs, and
give everybody a chance to make sure their favorite mod or plugin will work
in the new system.

Everybody is encouraged to download the TF beta!

We've prepared an FAQ that discusses the details of the change and answers
the questions we anticipate:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7388-QPFN-2491

Please report gameserver related bugs in this mailing list.

Client bugs can be reported through this mailing list, or in the TF beta
forum.
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1038

Thanks for your help, and happy testing!

(And remember, playtime in the beta counts towards item drops in the release
game.)

I would like to make one final suggestion, though. I think it's apparent by
this point that a large portion of the TF2 community prefers the style of
gameplay that 32 player servers provide. I know it's not exactly balanced
nor in line with what Valve may test with, but It would be nice if that
scoring penalty were removed as the prompt a client gets when joining said
servers should be enough of a penalty. Clearly if they want to join the
server beyond that prompt, that should be enough.

Any particular reason that the TF2 Item servers are down while the

Portal 2 (among others) item server is still up?

Appears so - the #52 and #53 crates naughty and nice are starting to drop on
those that are updated it seems too. Be nice for some information in regards
to this from Valve along with the soon to be released Xmas update.

[hlds_linux] Server info data overflow

Still seeing this from clients which blocks them from entering into the
server after a period of time - mostly Linux but I have seen a few windows
servers do this. Does anyone have a clue why?? I've yet to figure out the
cause and the last few updates have yet to stop it.

[hlds_linux] Server info data overflow help

2012-11-09 Thread Frank
disconnected (reason "Server info data overflow")

Ok I posted a while back thinking it was on a Linux issue but now I have
seen it on a Windows server - anyone care to give me some steps on solving
this problem? This is what clients are getting after a while of the server
going - requires a map reset to allow clients to join again without getting
the error.

The most recent optional update didn't do nothing to effect this.

Let's hope this update coming thru will help server issues with the Client
overflow problem I've reported - this is coming thru both Linux and Windows
servers - once it starts doing this to clients nobody else can get into the
servers without a map reset at least.

verifying, though I'm not sure if admins got the HL2: DM update though

Re: [hlds_linux] [hlds_announce] Mandatory Team Fortress 2 update released

2012-10-18 Thread Frank
I'm sorry if someone has already asked but what in the world is going on now
that we are getting "Invalid STEAM userID ticket crashes - I lost a full
server tonight ALL AT ONCE! BAM! All gone cause of same error... this didn't
start till yesterday's update came out.

So going to say it now... we need to stop bringing in new things till the
bugs are addressed! Last year was very unacceptable when it came to the
Halloween update - the game was unplayable for nearly a month due to the
crashes. While I'm like everyone else that enjoys a good addition of items
to keep the game alive I think it's best if the bugs we currently have is
fixed prior to this year's event update - then please be on the ball thru
each day including weekends to solve any bugs ( we know we will get them)
that are released in the event update.

So with saying that - the better date to release this year's event would be
this coming Monday or Tuesday, no later to avoid issues spilling over into
the weekend which is prime playing time for many players considering schools
are back in and people work during the regular week.
A heads up of when exactly it will be released would be very nice so those
of us that run multiple servers can be ready for it perhaps even take time
off to prepare.
