RE: [info-tech] Provisioning wireless

2010-11-17 Thread Pearson, Jeremy
We have three networks on our official wireless system:

Internal Secure Network - For District equipment only, using WPA
Public Unsecured Network - Filtered currently at our student
level using OpenDNS, completely wide open
Training Network - Filtered for porn only using OpenDNS, using
a different WPA key

Techs,

How are other tech coordinator's provisioning their wireless? For example just
a district radius SSID and a guest SSID or are you providing additional
specialized SSIDs with more refined access. Just seeking the best course.

Re: [info-tech] Ipad storage

2010-11-15 Thread Jackie Fonley
I purchased the case with them. Currently we don't have enough for a lab set
up scenario (15 as of today -- YEAH!) . . . so they will just be housed in
classrooms and stored by the teachers. I think when we purchased the syncing
stations (suitcase type) there was a more expensive option of a cart. (with the
syncing ability)

I have gone through the set up process with staff. Each elementary grade

iTunes account. Each elementary building also has one of the syncing cases
 to
use to sync apps to their iPod Touches. I also have purchased iTunes gift
cards for each grade level so they can purchase apps. With the home sharing
feature in iTunes they can purchase apps and share them with one another
across grade levels. (I also receive the receipt each time they purchase
something -- a must) Basically, each grade level is responsible for
 managing
their classroom set of iPod Touches. Currently we have around 70 Touches
 with
another 20 + some iPads on the way.

Below are the apps I have purchased/downloaded to use for demos with staff.
Some of my favorites as well as staff favorites are the ABA apps, Alien Math,
Learn Sight Words (dolche word list practice-- it's awesome), Spelldown,
iWriteWords, US States. Just out of coolness the Star Walk one is neat for
the iPad; my daughter made me download it after watching the commercial
several times. :-) I liked the iScore Baseball app for keeping softball
 stats
this summer -- coolness for me.

We have several people using Skype, and have really had no issues, other than a
dropped call here and there and some bad video once in a while. In fact, we
are teaching a class over it to 5 kids somewhere on the east side of the state.
No real big problems. Definitely a program that we could use more of!!!
We are using Lightspeed for content filtering.
Have a great, beautiful weekend!!!

Who uses Skype, and do you have any issues getting the traffic past your
content filter? Our content filter stops it as P2P traffic (which it really
is...). I could get past that if I could use a specific port, but Skype is all
over the place on ports, and you can only set a static inbound port, not
outbound. I am working with the vendor (Deep Nines), but I am curious what
others are doing.

Google Talk anyone?

We use Skype quite a bit here, and have seen no major problems (technical
ones, anyway). We've never really had any trouble with Skype traffic
getting through, and I'm not sure why, really, because I don't feel like
I've done anything special to make it work. Our firewall setup is simple,
and our content filters are fairly open.

I have gone through the set up process with staff. Each elementary

grade level iTunes account. Each elementary building also has one of
the syncing cases to use to sync apps to their iPod Touches. I also
have purchased iTunes gift cards for each grade level so they can
purchase apps. With the home sharing feature in iTunes they can
purchase apps and share them with one another across grade levels. (I
also receive the receipt each time they purchase something -- a must)
Basically, each grade level is responsible for managing their classroom
set of iPod Touches. Currently we have around 70 Touches with another
20 + some iPads on the way.

Below are the apps I have purchased/downloaded to use for demos with
staff. Some of my favorites as well as staff favorites are the ABA
apps, Alien Math, Learn Sight Words (dolche word list practice-- it's
awesome), Spelldown, iWriteWords, US States. Just out of coolness the
Star Walk one is neat for the iPad; my daughter made me download it
after watching the commercial several times. :-) I liked the iScore
Baseball app for keeping softball stats this summer -- coolness for me.

Re: [info-tech] Managing iPods/iPads and Magic TV Remote

2010-11-09 Thread Jackie Fonley
I am getting the 16GB models iPads (which were the $499 model), which for
purposes now will suffice memory wise. This next shipment of Touches we are
getting will be the 64 GB model, as they will not only be an additional Touch
for our centers/activity stations . . . but teachers were also wanting a
digital camera and video camera for their classrooms . . . so we went all
out in regard to memory so these Touches can also be used for those various
uses. Not sure what the pricing was for that group.

grade level iTunes account. Each elementary building also has one of
the syncing cases to use to sync apps to their iPod Touches. I also

purchase apps and share them with one another across grade levels. (I

Below are the apps I have purchased/downloaded to use for demos with

Thanks for the input everyone!

Has anyone had trouble with the October assessment for Skills Iowa. I've
run checks on teachers to see blocked content, but there were no clues. I
plan on working one on one and watch real time traffic
in order to see anything.(Config/active stats). I've even turned off SSL
checking to stop interference with https. They said it work fine last

We have had nothing but trouble with Skills IOwa this year as well. Some
students can get in others, no. Some students have been assigned to the wrong
districts and I can't change that without calls to skills Iowa. Students have
had answers disappear. It has been quite frustrating.

to. I also make sure that parents have a copy of the username and

Second question: We do reference email in the student agreement(s).
School email is for school-related communication only, no harassment,

1. What is your procedure when a student forgets their logon
password? Who handles this request?
When A student forgets a password either I or my assistant reset it
to a default password and require that the password be changed on
first log in

2. Do you maintain a list of student passwords, and if so, who
do you share that list with?
We do not maintain a list of student passwords. I do for
teachers and associates, but not students

3. How often do you change student passwords?
We reset student passwords to the default every new school
year. They are then required upon first log in to change to a password
of their choice.

I am just curious what other districts are doing regarding this
problem. It’s not a big deal at this point in the game, but it seems
to be an issue during the first few weeks of school and of course that
is when we are bombarded by a million other things…

Subject: [info-tech] Quick Survey - Student Accounts

I would sure appreciate any responses to the following questions regarding
student passwords when you get a chance

1. What is your procedure when a student forgets their logon password?
Who handles this request?

2. Do you maintain a list of student passwords, and if so, who do you
share that list with?

3. How often do you change student passwords?

I am just curious what other districts are doing regarding this problem. It's
not a big deal at this point in the game, but it seems to be an issue during
the first few weeks of school and of course that is when we are bombarded by a
million other things...

I handle the password resets. If a student forgets they come see me in my
office. Or leave me a note.

2. Do you maintain a list of student passwords, and if so, who do you

Just with a list of passwords is all.

3. How often do you change student passwords?

Once a year.

you also have to have the following checked...
block non-http traffic to blocked ip addresses
block non-http traffic to unknown ip addresses
block unknown urls
block unknown urls matching proxy patterns
BUT they will still find a few to proxy throughand these checked can and
will cause probs with the sites you want to get to.

One way to block https sites without having to decrypt/reencrypt the traffic
(which usually causes issues) is to use OpenDNS as your external DNS provider.
It's free and easy to use in conjunction with any other internal service. They
also have some nice reporting features for what it's getting requests for from
your site. Only way around it is a proxy server.

It's gonna kinda depend on how bad it is.

Sometimes chilling the drive can help.

Sometimes you can get away with taking the controller board off of an IDENTICAL
drive and you can get it working.

If it is critical enough, in other words worth the money, you can send it to a
drive recovery specialist. They have managed to get data off of hard drives
that have been through fires.

Re: [info-tech] Backup Systems/UPS Systems

2010-09-28 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
I have been a long fan of APC ups units, but recently been discouraged by a
large number of failures. I was also under the assumption that the SmartUPS
line was of the Online UPS where the power output was always from the
inverter. The SmartUPS unit supply line power and will condition the output
power when needed.

I have been using the Cyberpower Dual Conversion On-Line UPS units on a couple
of new installations. These units play well with generators and can handle a
large swing in input voltage and frequency. The software that is enclosed
allow you to setup one server directly connected via USB as a master server.
The software then can be loaded on any number of other computers that will
communicate with the Master server. This allows any number of servers to
gracefully shutdown before the UPS batteries give out without the complications
of the SNMP add-ons required by other UPS vendors.

Also someone gave me this URL.
http://www.upsforless.com/

It looks like there prices are very good.

We quit using Student Health Manager when we went to Infinite Campus. Our

try to do more and more with wikis and blogging and so forth. Do you have
email addresses for your students? What grades? Do you get parental
permission? And so on. Just what is your policy and what solution do you use?
 Thanks!

Right now we use an in-house solution hMail Server.
http://www.hmailserver.com/ - best part about it is that it is free. Not
very robust, but does the job. We use it mostly for the purpose that you
are needing.

We are just starting this year with 6-12 and are doing it in-house with
Ability Mail. Very simple, very cheap and very configurable.

We had both the students and their parents sign a user agreement.

RE: [info-tech] AUP Violations

2010-09-15 Thread Pearson, Jeremy
Chris-

Principals handle those situations however they see fit. Some yank
their Internet access, some the entire computer access. But, being in a 1:1
school that is almost not an option. I do remember Tim at Newell-Fonda talking
about parents being real involved if students lose access to their computer, as
in some cases it almost becomes the family computer. But, since we aren't that
far along yet, it is a little easier. Here in Dodge, it depends on the
situation to which decision is made.

Sorry I'm not more help.

Just curious what other districts are doing for students who violate AUP's. Do
you have a 1st Violation, 2nd Violation, 3rd Violation set of consequences as a
minumum punsihment? Or is it punishment fits the crime and is unique in every
case? This is especially tough for us 1:1 schools and I would like to hear how
you are handling these incidences.

For instance, we have high school kids who know they are being monitored, but
still decide to type F*** this school in a Google search. I would like to
kick the kid off the internet for a while for something like that. But in a
school system that is so integrated with technology, it is tough to enforce the
rules and make teachers have to provide alternate plans for student who cannot
access technology.

Thoughts...

re: [info-tech] AUP Violations

2010-09-15 Thread Tim Limbert
That's a tough one, and your last sentence is really the key. Taking the
computer away, or removing internet access, means you've got a kid not
functioning at all. So, you trade one problem for another. I think you
definitely have to choose your battles. I know you were just giving a
hypothetical, but do you really want to fight a battle over a kid typing
something nasty on his computer when you happened to be looking? I might take
a no blood, no foul approach there. Now, if he were using school email to
send that sentiment to other students, that might be a very different story. I
think we're definitely having to re-evaluate what we consider
acceptable/unacceptable behavior in a 1:1 environment. Do we have rules that
are essentially unenforceable? Are we creating unwinnable battles? Are we
driving our students to find sneaky ways to express themselves?
When I, as the tech coordinator, see something that concerns me while
monitoring student laptops, I have to ask myself whether what I'm seeing
qualifies as harmful, or merely irritating. Most of the time, it's the latter.
I might grab a screenshot, and pass it on to the teacher or principal, and let
them handle it as they see fit. I also try to constantly remind students of
their lack of an expectation of privacy, and I try to do it in a positive way
(pop up a chat window, and say, Hey, Bobby, it looks like you're having some
trouble with xxx. Do you need some help?
And we educators have to constantly remind ourselves of the challenges that a
1:1 environment poses in terms of classroom management, curriculum and
instruction. Engagement, rigor and relevance all become much more urgently
necessary in a 1:1 environment. We have to engage the students, provide a
relevant curriculum, and instruct in a way that makes it impossible for them to
be successful if they're not on task. This has never been possible for every
single student, and it probably never will, laptops or no. But that's our
challenge, and the success of 1:1 learning depends on how well we meet this
challenge.
