Re: [LegacyUG] Search/Replace

2024-08-15 Thread Cathy Pinner

Gloria,
That sounds very strange but it may possibly have something to do with
the accented character?

But it doesn't make sense to me.
The space between Given Names and Surnames is supplied in the output
where Given Name and Surname are put together. It does not come from
having a space at the end of the Given Names field.
In your Alt. Names do you have the  Surname in the Given Names field?
That's the only way I can think that the space could be missing.
If da Silva is actually in the Surname field for this Alternate Name,
please take this up with Support.

Thanks Cathy & Kathy for responding. I am seeing this in my alternate
names; 1) Search tab in the Family View, 2) Search Replace tab. In
that box is 1) Find Where, 2) Find What, and 3) Replacement Text.

Example of what I did that removed the space:
1) Alt. given names
2) Joao(with no space)
3) João(with no space)
I assume not having a space after 2) is what caused the problem. I now
have alternate names such as Joãoda Silva. It should be João da Silva.

Thanks again,
Gloria

I lost the space when I Searched/Replaced

Gloria, how did they lose the space?

Where are you seeing this?

If in a Report, make sure you are looking at it at 100% or greater as
at lower percentages the space and even some letters may not be clear.

Hi Everyone,

How do you correct given and alternate names that have lost the space?
For example, what was once John Charles, _ with a surname or no
surname, is now JohnCharles,. I tried variations in the 'How to
Find' and 'How to Replace' in the Search & Replace to no avail. Does
this mean I have to correct each individual manually?

Thank you in advance,

Where are the notes missing?

There are new options for Notes in Reports in Legacy 10 so go to the
Report, click the Report Options button and on the Include tab in the
Event section click the Event Options button and check the Note options
carefully.

Re: [LegacyUG] Unlinking a Child

2024-08-13 Thread Evelyn ..
Hi Rick,
I have found that if I link an additional set of parents (with correct
father and mother) then the last step in that linking process lets me
unlink from the 1st set of parents. That way I never end up with an Orphan
child not linked to any parent. This is especially helpful when I get
interrupted in the middle of the process.
Have fun!

  1.
Just go into family view that has the father and mother with Child you want to
unlink
  2.
Write down child info - name , b. Date so you can relink later
  3.
Right click on Child, and click Unlink - I would unlink from both parents.
  4.
Go to Family view where you want the Child to be part of the family
  5.
In child area, click Add a New Child & then Click Link an existing Son
  6.
Look up the son with the info you have from step 2 and link the son to the new
family

That's it!

Looking for a step by step guide for unlinking a child.

I see how to unlink a child but it say from both mother and father.

  1. Is there a way to just unlink from the father?
  2. Is the unlinked child still available from the name list or does he go
somewhere else in Legacy?
  3. How do I relink him with the correct father?

Yes, I only discovered that a day or so ago - the sets of columns. That can be
very useful, I believe.

Ian,
I also only use one Legacy family file for all people of interest whether they
are linked into my main tree or not.

Updating when away from your normal computer and using another should be no
problem at all PROVIDED you travel with the latest version of your family file
AND you transfer the final version on your tablet back to your computer before
doing more work on the computer. You do have to be using the same version of
Legacy on both computers.

Since you've been customising columns in Index View did you see you can save up
to 10 sets of columns and then switch between them when appropriate? Clicking
the header row shows you the saved sets and you can switch to another with
another click.

Cathy, thanks for that. I will do it that way in future, if necessary
- it will be quite straight-forward.

However, this is what I found expedient:
I added 2 fields to my view of the data, in the "travelling" version
of Legacy; those fields appear in Index View as Added and UpDate.
(I eventually found the fields when using Customise Index View
Columns, as "Date: Added to Family File", and "Date: Modified")

I was careful with both the Tag and the RINs - no problems encountered.

Because I had only 6 extra people added or modified while away, and I
was using a tablet with Legacy v9, it was simple to locate them that
way and export, and then import into my "home" version of Legacy. If I
had hundreds of modified records I can imagine complications and
confusion.

The "home" Legacy database is now upgraded to v10, as I mentioned (and
I like v10).

Because I have a reasonably large database now, having those 2 extra
fields is useful in itself (though I don't want to have to change or
import a large number of individuals that were added/modified within a
"travelling" version of Legacy).

A side comment: I find it easier to have a single database, with
sundry "non-family" persons added there rather than in a series of
separate Legacy database files. (Some individuals purported to be
related have turned out to be not. Others - they are merely of
interest to me. )

One database, one computer is easier for me. However, most of my
ancestors 2-3 generations back are in parts of UK and Ireland, so
updating when overseas may continue to be a problem.

You need to use Search > Find > Detailed Search tab Individual >
Modified date > after > [the date you started using the other
computer] Tag the Search list on an unused tag and export to a new
Legacy file and then import just those people into your Legacy 10
database and merge. In the export and import you can choose to keep
existing RINs as much as possible though on import I'd opt to start
RINs at a much higher value than your current RINs so you can see
easily in the merge which person came from which file.
Don't forget to override privacy in export if you've used any privacy
features.

Further clarification of my previous post –

I have added to my Legacy fields display, the *Added* field and the
*Update* field - but *sorting* by these in the _Index  mode_ (rather
than the _Family display mode_) will not allow sorting by the values
in those two fields.

Perhaps it would be possible in both Legacy v9 and Legacy v10, to
create a query which is ordered in those ways? I have not yet
attempted to do that.

Any ideas from others here?

No catch. For a start it's desktop software and once you have it you
can use it for as long as you like.
MH have apparently wanted to make Legacy free ever since they bought
the company 7 years ago. The part of Legacy that generates revenue is,
I think, the webinar subscriptions.

What version and build of Legacy are you using?
This was a known problem.
It is fixed in Legacy 10.
Legacy 10 is free for everyone including the Deluxe features.

My upgrade was so seamless that I had to double check to make sure it had
made the change.

So far the only mumble was the change in the search file links. Probably
not a problem for most people, but with over a Thousand Angus in my data it
is almost a necessity.
this has happened in previous upgrades, I had forgotten. Prolly an age

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 10

2024-06-22 Thread Cathy Pinner

DeanAdams,
Thousands have upgraded without problems.
Some have had initial problems and sorted them. Some of those were user
created.

Here's an annotated listing of the suggested steps documenting the
problems that various people have had.
They mostly revolve around getting the actual installation file to
download and security software.

Here's the list annotated with solutions to issues people have
encountered during this simple process.

Here's the things to do to make the process as trouble free as possible.
1. Run File > File Maintenance > check/repair on your files. You should
be doing this regularly to keep your database healthy. If there are
errors reported run it again. Errors after the second run are the ones
that aren't auto-corrected and require your intervention. Fix them and
run again.
2. Verify that there are no broken media links. Tools>Media Relinker You
can fix them in Legacy 10 but you need to know they weren't caused by
the upgrade.
3. Backup your family file and media files. Preferably make sure you
also have these backups off your computer either in a cloud or on
external drive.
4. Download 10 from the website. Some people encounter problems because
a) they make a typo when entering their email address, b) the email goes
to spam or doesn't arrive. If it doesn't arrive try a different email
address c) the link in the email doesn't work and they need to copy and
paste the link to their browser. One person reported that his ISP
blocked unknown programs for 24 hours

5. Install 10 and enjoy.
Some people encounter problems with the installation because their
security software blocks it or part of it. Pausing the security software
during installation solves that. If concerned you can go into Aeroplane
mode/come offline for the installation,.
If there is any problem after installation RESTART your computer and it
is usually solved.

Some people are having problems with the Legacy FamilySearch module. The
login has been changed by FamilySearch and is now done in your browser
every time you open the Legacy FamilySearch module. The login
credentials can still be saved in Legacy FamilySearch so you don't have
to enter them every time. Reports say it is not working if you are using
a Ad blocker and tracking blocker on the FamilySearch site as the login
information has to be returned. Some are finding the browser tab is left
open. I see it open and close but the browser often stays open on top of
the Legacy FamilySearch module.

Yes there are some bugs in the new version that people are finding
particularly in new reports, but so there still are in Legacy 9 and
earlier. Only Legacy 10 is being updated with bug fixes.

Hope this helps
Cathy

Terry,
Go to Search > Search Internet and choose the BillionGraves site. This
will search BillionGraves for the current person.
There is an icon you can add to your My Toolbar if you choose to
customise it - Design> Toolbars > My Toolbar but all it does is open the
website.
The box on the Individual Information screen will take you to the
memorial if you have a number entered or search BillionGraves for that
person if you haven't.

The BillionGraves ID is found in the browser address bar.

Jan,
I agree with Henry.
You really shouldn't be using a gedcom to go from Legacy to Legacy.
I would think there is something wrong anyway if it's taking so long for
just 30,000 people.

WHY? Are you using a GEDCOM.
Make a copy (or rename your Legacy 9 file and just open it with Legacy 10.

Legacy 10 will convert your data and you will be off and running.

Just curious

Good Afternoon,

I have been a Legacy user for over 15 years and love the program. I
also have been a Mac user for longer than that…and have had to use
Fusion to be able to utilize Legacy. I have a fairly large database
with 30,000 individuals along with many notes for most of those
individuals. Yesterday I downloaded Legacy 10 at 6:00 PM. It took
until about 8:00 this morning before I could then import my data. I do
have a five year old MacBook Pro and having Fusion slows down both the
Mac and Legacy. My Legacy 9 data from a Gedcom is still importing 7
1/2 hours later and only partially loaded. Is anyone else having such
a slow transfer?

Many thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] Tips for Updating to Legacy 10

2024-06-18 Thread Cathy Pinner

Sarah,
Q1: Yes you should still set the Customise options I mentioned. It's the
program that you've probably pinned to the Taskbar, not a particular
database.
Q2: When you are happy you have your all your data in your Legacy 10
database you are always opening, yes you can delete other copies you
find elsewhere. A Legacy database is made up of the main FDB file which
has the Legacy logo and a number of other files that start filename> but have different extensions. You can delete them. What you
should keep are data backup zips - at least the last 10 for complete
peace of mind. Put them in the one folder. You only need the last 2 or 3
media backup zips.
The reason for keeping more data backups is that we don't always realise
there is a problem in the database until we go to a particular family we
may not have looked at for ages. The data backup zip zips together that
FDB file with the  others with the same family filename.
Legacy 10 now records in Options > Customise your backup folders. Again
see section 6.

To minimise the need to use a data backup, regularly do File > File
Maintenance > Check/Repair. Databases are like cars - they need regular
maintenance.
It's years since I've actually needed to use a data backup due to my
database becoming unhealthy but I still have some backups going back
decades. I restore an old one to see what progress I've made and
sometimes to retrieve people I remember researching but can't find. I
used to delete people I found didn't belong to the family but sometimes
I discover later that they do but in a different part of the family. I
no longer delete but just unlink.

Hi Cathy

I do have a question for you, if you don't mind; well 2 actually!
The 1st is that I usually pin the Legacy site to my task bar, but
should I also use those 2 Customize options that you suggest?
Secondly, I noticed when I was trawling through my folders and files,
that there are an awful lot from the past, ie Legacy 9, in various
folder formats. None of them will open when I try, so can I just
delete them all, and just keep ones from Legacy 10? TIA

Similarly, you can look for your data files using File Explorer.
Open File Explorer from the taskbar or right-click on the Start menu,
choose File Explorer and then select a location from the left pane to
search or browse.
Go to the drive where you store your data (on a basic setup it would
be C:\) and search (top right search panel) for ".fdb".

All your Legacy data files will show up.

WHY? Are you using a GEDCOM.
Make a copy (or rename your Legacy 9 file and just open it with Legacy 10.

Legacy 10 will convert your data and you will be off and running.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy 10

Good Afternoon,

I have been a Legacy user for over 15 years and love the program. I also have
been a Mac user for longer than that…and have had to use Fusion to be able to
utilize Legacy. I have a fairly large database with 30,000 individuals along
with many notes for most of those individuals. Yesterday I downloaded Legacy 10
at 6:00 PM. It took until about 8:00 this morning before I could then import my
data. I do have a five year old MacBook Pro and having Fusion slows down both
the Mac and Legacy. My Legacy 9 data from a Gedcom is still importing 7 1/2
hours later and only partially loaded. Is anyone else having such a slow
transfer?

Many thanks,

Jan in Denver

It will be there somewhere. When you find it, since you don't
seem to be
good at finding your way around your computer, put it in the
Legacy
default folder for data where the Sample file is, since you

find that.   ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\ folder.

Save your data backup zips to a Google Drive folder and make

In the backup dialogue you will see you can set the folder for

I have finally got my FT back! After clicking on practically every
file/folder on my laptop to try and get one of the Sample ones to open, I
finally did. But when I went through all the list my tree still wasn't
there. Then I just clicked on something to refresh the list of recent files
and the 3rd one was my tree! A box popped up to ask me to transfer stuff to
Legacy 10, and Voila!
Thank you all for trying to help me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tips for Updating to Legacy 10

2024-06-17 Thread Bob Austen
You don't have Legacy on your computer and can't figure out why you can't
open your tree??? And you think you are computer savvy? And you have the
gall to attack those that are trying to help you? Now you want 'support'
to help you after you have trashed anyone who has reached out to you? Good
luck!
Upgrading to Legacy 10 is very easy for anyone who "knows their way around
their computer".

I think that is a very unfair thing to say to Cathy who has done her
best to help you. Her generous assistance to all LUG members is
valuable and hugely appreciated. The impression we gathered from your
mails was that you were not as computer-savvy as some and criticising
those who are trying to assist you is not going to help you in any way.

Legacy 10 has been released and is free for everyone. It has all the
Deluxe features for free. It has the same look and feel as Legacy 8
and 9. It has some new features and reports and tweaks to existing
features and reports.
The new features are listed on the renewed Legacy website. The full
list is in this blog:
<https://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2024/06/the-new-legacy-family-tree-10-is-here-and-its-all-free.html>
It's advised to be running Windows 10 or Windows 11. Not all features
are guaranteed to work on earlier Windows versions.
Here's the things to do to make the process as trouble free as
possible with some comments on where a few people out of the thousands
who have updated have been encountering problems. Note it will
overwrite Legacy 9. You can't run both versions as the settings are
all locked to the same folder ...\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\_AppData\ folder 1. Run File > File Maintenance > check/repair on
your files. You should be doing this regularly to keep your database
healthy. 2. Verify that there are no broken media links. Tools>Media
Relinker You can fix them in Legacy 10 but you need to know they
weren't caused by the upgrade. 3. Backup your family file and media
files. Preferably make sure you also have these backups off your
computer either in a cloud or on external drive. 4. Download 10 from
the website. Some people encounter problems because a) they make a
typo when entering their email address, b) the email goes to spam or
doesn't arrive. If it doesn't arrive try a different email address c)
the link in the email doesn't work and they need to copy and paste the
link to their browser.
5. Install 10 and enjoy. Some people encounter problems with the
installation because their security software blocks it or part of it.
Pausing the security software during installation solves that. If
concerned you can go into Aeroplane mode/come offline for the
installation. If there is any problem after installation RESTART your
computer and it is usually solved. Have fun, Cathy

again! I wish I'd stuck with the old one. I went to the folder where I had
saved it, and zilch! Only that silly sample file comes up. I did try restart
but that didn't help. Should I uninstall it, and then reinstall it, or put PC
back to an earlier time? I will also look through all the other emails re
Legacy 10, and see if there is anything there to help me. Thank you

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy Version 10 Problem With Blank/Inoperative Screen

Hello all.

I downloaded Version 10 and the program came in nicely. I have two family
trees running; my own, and the second being my wife's family. What I
discovered in my family tree is that the "Birth, Death Dates and Anniversaries"
screen under "Legacy Home" is not working properly. It appears that the
information that should be reported is not loading. (This feature on my wife's
family tree is working just fine.) I have gone through the program's
"Knowledge Base" in an effort to fix the problem but have been unsuccessful.

I would welcome any help in fixing this problem.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tips for Updating to Legacy 10

2024-06-15 Thread Cathy Pinner

Sarah,
I've already given you the Support article on how to find a lost file.
Your file will be there.
You don't have to have Legacy at all to install Legacy 10. But if you
have Legacy you convert your earlier Legacy database into Legacy 10 format.
If you've been using Legacy, even a much earlier one, you can open your
current database -when you find it OR use your latest Legacy data backup
zip - you have been backing up haven't you?
Here's the Support file again:

No you shouldn't reset your Laptop to an earlier time. Use the options
in the Support article or open Windows File Explorer and search yourself
for *.fdb files.

But my problem is that I can't update to Legacy 10, because I don't
have Legacy 9 to upgrade it from. Sure, I could install Legacy 10, but
then I would still have no tree there. I could create a gedcom from my
Genes reunited tree, but as someone said, gedcom is the last resort! I
have an external hard-drive plugged into my laptop, so perhaps it
might be on there. But if it's gone from the laptop, it will probably
be gone from there too!
Should I reset laptop to an earlier time and see if it reappears,
perhaps? Thank you, Sarah

Legacy 10 has it's own big blue circle with a white "L.  Hover your
mouse over the icon, if it reads Legacy 9, delete it. That one won't
work. Since you updated, you no longer have Legacy 9 on your
computer.  Go to Start, show all apps, scroll down to located the
Legacy 10 icon.  At least, that was all that I had to do.  Then pinned
it to Start and I dragged the icon to where I wanted it.

I have just opened my Legacy 9 from the task bar where I keep it
attached, and to my horror my whole family tree has disappeared! All I
get is that silly sample one, and I have gone through the list that
Legacy gave me, but none of them come up with my tree. Even where I
had it saved in my computer files, there are just 2 sample files of
that other silly tree. Please help. as I need to upgrade to 10, but
how can I when my tree has just disappeared from everywhere? I was
only using it the other day! Would resetting my laptop to an earlier

Re: [LegacyUG] Tips for Updating to Legacy 10

2024-06-14 Thread Cathy Pinner

Sarah,
You will probably see your file in the Recent File list if you haven't
moved or deleted it.
The Recent File List is found by clicking the L top left corner of the
Legacy screen if the L is larger than the title bar. If it isn't, you'll
see a System Ribbon tab and it's on that instead. It depends on the
Design Style you are using.
Here's the support article on finding a lost file:

It's possible that Options > Customise 1.2 is no longer pointing to the
file you want to automatically open.
It's also possible that you haven't set Options > Customise 6.1 and 6.2
to where you want your file to be.

Another possibility is that your Documents folder is inside OneDrive
because you asked OneDrive to sync it or you agreed to let Windows
backup your data. If so, you need to go to the OneDrive settings and
make sure it is keeping local copies of your files as well as syncing
them to the OneDrive cloud.

Would resetting my laptop to an earlier
time help, please? It is Windows 11, and I had the free Legacy 9 edition.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tips for Updating to Legacy 10

2024-06-14 Thread Linda G
Legacy 10 has it's own big blue circle with a white "L. Hover your mouse
over the icon, if it reads Legacy 9, delete it. That one won't work. Since
you updated, you no longer have Legacy 9 on your computer. Go to Start,
show all apps, scroll down to located the Legacy 10 icon. At least, that
was all that I had to do. Then pinned it to Start and I dragged the icon
to where I wanted it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Updating to Version 10

2024-06-14 Thread Wes Jester
Well, I finally got it worked out.  I did have the DAO dll in the
libraries.  As a last resort, before th dreaded GEDCOM attempt, I
replaced them as described in the Knowledge Base.  Lo and behold
everything now works.  Apparently the ones I had gotten corrupt somehow.

Thanks to all who helped me.  I really appreciate the legacy Family.  We
all work together to help one another.

If no errors, then backup that file and copy it to the Legacy 10
Documents/ Legacy Family Tree/Data   area and try to open that in
Legacy 10.

I am trying to update to version 10 but am encountering and issue with
my database.  I tried to run a File > File Maintenance > check/repair on
the file but get a message with Error 91Error rebuilding indexs.  With
block variable not set.

The solution is to do a file maint which, of course, raises this issue.

I have restored from the previous back up and no joy.

Any ideas.

2024-06-13 Thread Cathy Pinner

Wes,
I'd do everything before using a Gedcom, especially if you use
SourceWriter sources as they are all converted to Basic style in a gedcom.

Have you checked the DLL file as in the Knowlege Base article?

If a recent backup doesn't work, then I suggest you ask Support for help
with this.

Yes I have done that as well.  I have also reloaded a backup from my

have done a few database repair cycles in the last several months, so
I am a bit lost now. I think I will have to restore form a GEDCOM and

Re: [LegacyUG] Updating to Version 10

2024-06-13 Thread Evelyn ..
Hi Wes... I remember wrestling with that problem. I found that if I
regularly do:
1. Backup
2. List Cleanup
3. Backup
4. Check/Repair
5. Backup
6. Compact Family File
7. Backup
8. Check/Repair
9. Backup

It DOES take a while to do all that on a large file, but it saves headaches
& panic attacks. If any of the Check/Repair steps gets the error message, I
move on to the next step (Backup). Hope that helps.

I have done just that.  I restored from the latest backup and the one

as well as the legacy Freezes steps.  All to no avail.

Any ideas will be most welcome.

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem with Search/Find

2024-06-12 Thread Cathy Pinner

You don't use a Detailed Search to find a person in Legacy.
The quickest way is to go to Index View. In the Surname box at the top
type Surname, Given Name. it probably would show your person before you
finished typing the Given Name.
If you use the Given Name box, you type Given Names, Surname. Note the
comma. It's unnecessary to add a space after it before the other part of
the name.

The Name List search boxes work the same way.

I have an ancestor named James Knox Horn. When I try to do a search
and find on him in order to review his record, I search for the given
name of James and the surname of Horn. It returns two individuals
named Jame Horn, but no James Knox Horn. Is it supposed to work this

There was a Yahoo group for Frome, Somerset, England as well, which also moved

Re: [LegacyUG] Kemp family history

2024-05-15 Thread Brian Kelly
Your best bet is to learn how to do genealogical research of your own,
concentrating on your own family. Firstly, do you have you own family
recorded on genealogy software either on your computer or in the cloud?
I am a great believer in personal storage of my research on my own
computer using the Legacy Family Software but there are subscription
websites such as MyHeritage.com and Ancestry.com (which may have a local
Australian branch Ancestry.co.au) which do allow subscribers to have
their family tree data stored on the companies computers. Legacy Family
Tree software has a free version that is very powerful and does not
limit the number of records you can keep. The benefits of the paid
version are the many additional features the paid version provides and
it is well worth the modest cost. See LegacyFamilyTree.com to view the
software features and download the free version as a trial to see if you
like using the software before purchasing the paid version.

The LDS church also has a world-wide presence and is the repository for
billions of online genealogical records. Their website familysearch.org
also has beginner training material for those just getting started in
doing genealogical research. You need a user ID and account to access
their website but these are free to anyone as is access to the
church-held records.

Legacy Family Tree (sponsor of this user group) also has a webinar
website with many training resources, some of their webinars are free
but most require a subscription/membership (less than USD 50 per year).
It has even been sponsoring a series of Australian focused webinars that
you may find useful.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy on a website

2024-05-13 Thread hpeterjr
Crystal

I have been doing genealogy for over forty years. My database is a compilation
of research and collaboration with over 1400 users.

I began using TNG (The Next Generation of Genealogy Site Building) since 2017.
I also use the host they had recommended “Simply Hosting”

My data includes over 750,00 individuals and over 30,000 images…

I created this website so that I might share it with others that have the same
interests….

While I know it may not be perfect, so I depend on others to suggest edits and
recommend additions or changes.

I usually update every 7-10 days.

As far as cost with “Simply Hosting”

Domain annually about $15.00 prepaid

Hosting fee (for my size database) about $150.00 annually prepaid

I do not charge for using the website so it is not for profit website (free
searches) although everyone must request a user account (simple process)

The cost of TNG I believe about $40.00 and I paid at the time for the program
owner to do the install.. (about $15 or $20 dollars)

The same cost would apply if you desired to update in the future… the program
owner is involved in the improvements…

And of course if you are skilled enough you can do the installation…. There are
many vides on “you tube”

Search “The next generation of genealogy site building”

Lastly, there are many templates available with the program, and there are also
outside programmers that have developed template you can purchase at an
addition cost.

Kind regards

Henry

Thanks Brian, I finally had time today to research the information you gave

I do have another question if you have time to answer. I just found out a
relative was married prior to what I have added in Legacy. Before she died
they had one child. He then remarried his 2nd wife. When I added the first
wife all the kids are listed as 1/2 under the first wife. I don't know how
to just have the first wife linked with their child & 1/2 under the 2nd
wife.

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. I tried to read the help
sections but I find it confusing.

Thanks again, Fran

Hello Kim,

I believe this only happens when Legacy is maximised.

Try this... with Legacy on your number-3 screen, un-maximise it then drag
Legacy's window borders out to fill the screen. Now close Legacy and reopen it

Works for me.

Re: [LegacyUG] opening Legacy pages on one screen

2024-04-29 Thread Dave Naylor

Hello Kim,

I believe this only happens when Legacy is maximised.

Try this...  with Legacy on your number-3 screen, un-maximise it then
drag Legacy's window borders out to fill the screen.  Now close Legacy
and reopen it to see where it goes.

Works for me.

Cheers! -- Dave N

Re: [LegacyUG] opening Legacy pages on one screen

2024-04-29 Thread hpeterjr
This is a “Windows issue” not anything Legacy settings can change…

Other that the splash screen when Legacy opens it is always on the monitor I
drag it to…

As a “Beta tester” I have multiple version open most of the time

Kind regards

Re: [LegacyUG] Is Legacy of capable?

2024-04-06 Thread TheyBrokeTheMold
I have been using Families for many years.  Works natively in Samsung Android,
and has abilities to send/receive files to work with Legacy.  Not all the
features of Windows Legacy, and still good interface if/when you want to use
Legacy.I use Windows Legacy on my PC as my Master database.  Then I
periodically send latest file to Families on my Android Tablet and my Android
Phone.  I also export a file to the free Web site, Tribal Pages.Families is not
a web page, it is an application, so they would need access codes for access,
but I think they might be able to make changes, so not a good solution.  That
is why I use Tribal Pages.  Lots of flexibility on Web page designs, and others
can read, run reports, but cannot make changesIf I make changes in Families, I
can export records that have been Added/Modified since a particular date, and
import them into Legacy.  After import, I export from Legact and upload to
Tribal Pages.  I don't so much maintenance on Tribal Pages, but that allowed me
to make my own family Web site, and have given my relatives an access code that
allows them to view all records and run various reports.Sorry, for the long
answer, but the short answer is YES - Use Tribal Pages.  As a Web page, it will
run on anything with Internet access.  I hope this helps.ThankU2

Re: [LegacyUG] correction - My file has Split into 3 trees

2024-03-01 Thread Brian Kelly
I would go to Betty Brown without the tag and check her family
connections. You may have multiple parents for her. One is the tagged 3
Henry but where she is married to tag 2 John Smith her father may not be
the tag 3 person.

*Subject:* My file has Split into 3 trees

Looking at Tools – Trees I find my file has somehow split into three
separate files. I have:

Family A  approx 5000 persons which I have tagged as Tag 1

Family B  approx 800 persons which I have tagged as Tag 2

Family C  approx 30 persons which I have tagged as Tag (was 2, should
read 3)

The trees ramble over a lot of families, not all directly related but
linked in some way.

Everyone was added individually and It tells me that I have no duplicates.

*I have found this which I don’t understand.*

In family B I have:

“John Smith” (Family B – Tag 2) married to “Betty Brown” WITHOUT a tag
No. Her Father was “Henry Brown” who is in Family C – Tag 3).

What I don’t understand is why that marriage at least would not join the
two families in trees.

Also, any thoughts on a good way to find where the breaks are in the
trees. I am sure they were linked at some stage and no doubt deleting
someone has caused the break. This could have been sometime in the last
15 or more years ago.

Any suggestions appreciated.

2024-02-29 Thread Brian Kelly
There are three variations for a "Descendant Report" A Descendant Chart
Report, a Descendant Book Report and a Descendant Narrative Report.

For the Descendant Book Report open the Report options and check the
"other Spouses" on the include tab.

Descendant narrative book has the same other spouse option on the
include tab for the report options.

The Descendant Chart does not allow including other spouses.

When you click on Help on the main menu bar a new menu bar appears, on
which the 6th button is "Request feature."

I use the Notes tabs a lot but I have never found it troublesome to use
my keyboard to capitalise in the usual way. In fact, I use the keyboard
for Bold a lot because it's quicker to do that rather than take my hand
off the keyboard to use the mouse.

Ian,

I suggest you Reset the Report options and then choose your particular options
again and see if that fixes it. I'm not seeing it with someone with Privacy
Setting as Private and an AKA when I override the Privacy options to include
Private individuals so I don't think it is a bug. I tested in 9.0.0.449. I
haven't updated to the latest update .456 as I'm away from home and don't have
as much internet access.

I trust you've found a place to keep cool in this heatwave in Perth.
