Re: [newbie] Toshiba and video woes
Hi Mark, I am a little behind you but maybe I can help. I have a Toshiba Satellite 4090 XDVD notebook with Win2000 and LM 7.0 installed. I also had some problems configuring my video card. My computer has a Trident Cyber 9525 Graphic Adapter which is not available. I chose the closest option (Trident Cyber Generic)... It would fail the test with my prefered resolution of 1024x768 so I chose a lower resolution... which passed the test... After completing the Linux instalation, under the X environment, I went back to Dragconfig and redefined my video card to the proper resolution and it works fine. I have no complains... My advice is to try different resolutions, frequencies, etc. until you arrive to one that passes the test. After finishing the instalation try modifying it later from the X environment to the resolution you want (of course knowing your computer can handle it). I hope this can help you. By the way my Toshiba works fine with Linux, even the winmodem. I found useful guides for installing Linux on a Toshiba Satellite 4090 XDVD at http://hartic.sssup.it/~lamastra/ (could be of help) Best luck, Ricardo At 12:16 PM 15/10/2000 +0100, you wrote: Greetings all I am trying to install 7.1 onto a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4200 laptop. 6Gb HDD, 64Mb RAM. RE: [newbie] Toshiba and video woes
Dear Ricardo I have a Toshiba satellite 4090 XCDT and finally I have reached to install the Mandrake 7.1. I had no problems to install the 7.0 version, but the 7.1 was more difficult I do not know wy; the way to install is in text mode installation, that means, when the installation CD show you the first screen, you must type F1 and then write text; Mandrake 7.1 recognized the Trident Cyber 9525 and when you restart the computer everything is OK. I had problems with the PCMCIA, but you must go to the Bios SETUP and put the PCMCIA not in Automatic but in the first option. I had not tryied to install the winmodem because a external modem run faster. So, the solution is the installation in text mode; I had the problem of bad installation in graphic mode with the Mandrake 7.1 not only with my laptop, also with other computers and in all cases when linux try to start the X the graphic screen shut down and appears the text linux screen. I have solved the problem in two ways: 1) installation in text mode 2) installation from windows, putting the CD on the CD-ROM driver and it starts automatically and you select complet installation. I hope this help you, now mi laptop works fine with linux Francisco Alcaraz [EMAIL PROTECTED] Murcia (Spain)

[newbie] How to copy a file to a diskette?
The XServer on my brand-new installation of Mandrake 7.2 beta 3 refused to start the first day after it was installed (without error messages), then shut down, and rebooted the next day. At the end of a long list of messages were two lines: Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed' A note to send in a problem report the full server output located in log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log" followed, and I was left at the $ prompt. I would like to copy this file to an MS-DOS diskette so I can include it in such a message. However, the precise instructions for copying to a diskette seem to be beyond the scope of the few references I have here. My system has a 3.5" floppy drive as MS-DOS A:, which I understand can be mounted as /fd0 under Linux. What is the precise command to do this? I found in a book, and used, as root, the command # mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 mnt which caused the computer to read the diskette and return to the prompt. I assumed the diskette was mounted at that point, but was it? Can a standard Mandrake installation recognize an MS-DOS formatted diskette, and write a text file to it? Or must some Linux-specific format be applied? And if not a Linux-specific format, must a particular file system be installed on the diskette? I tried to use, without success, the cp and the dd commands to copy that file to the diskette. The system responded that no such directory existed. How does one accomplish these tasks? KM

/etc/profile has a comment that PATH is taken care of by Mandrake Security. Removing the # and adding dirs has no affect on the path. Could someone point out: You didn't say why you wanted to change the path but I think you're looking in the wrong place. 1) Where Mandrake hides the ability to update the path Who's path? If you want the default user path changed, change /etc/bashrc. If you want to change your user path, make changes to .bashrc in your home directory. 2) Where this and other differences in Mandrake vs popular Linux how-to books are documented I've found that most of what you read in Red Hat books applies to Mandrake as well. They don't cover stuff like DrakConf of course but all the "real" system stuff is there. 3) Is it a standard *nix security configuration to not search the current directory? Most annoying for an OS/2, Win32, DOS based person. grin...I recall an explanation of this at one point but I can't recall it. For my user account, I've got .: as the first entry in my path (in my .bashrc file) 4) Where should I set other env vars so I don't have to run *.sh scripts to set / export env vars before running programs I've installed. Two things here. The path change will cause them to be "available" but if you want to run them as though they are executable, you have to make sure they have their execute bits set. Quite often shell scripts are distributed without this being the case. If you're only going to run it once (like during an install), it might be easier to use "sh install.sh" Cheers --- Larry

RE: [newbie] where's the iostream library?
If you have access to news groups you really probably ought to ask programming related questions in comp.os.unix.programmer, you'll probably get much quicker and more correct responses. If you have missing pieces of the development library, it's not like you can just drop in a header file and get things to work. Also, if you are missing a file or two, chances are your development files are severly hosed and you'll find that a lot more then just one or two files are missing. FYI, iostream is part of the C++ library, and fstream.h is part of the C library. I'm surprised that when doing an installation there that the developer type is a choice, it would seem that Mandrake would force you to get this regardless of what kind of installation you get because, eventually, if you are downloading software for you system you'll have to compile something sooner or later. -Original Message- From: Tyler Longren [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, October 15, 2000 12:08 PM To: Mandrake Newbie Subject: [newbie] where's the iostream library? Full drive capacity not seen is usually a motherboard limitation. This is where shim programs come in [avoid these "disc managers" if at all possible]. Flash upgrades of the motherboard bios usually fix problems not expand capability. Buying new bios chips for the motherboard isn't too practical to do. I am wondering about a bad address line (read: wire) in your controller to drive cable and other physical problems with the drive installation (assuming this drive is new to this motherboard), but this is not likely the cause of you not seeing the full drive capacity. Has the full capacity of this drive ever been seen [a previous install?] ? Has this motherboard ever seen more than 2GB of drive capacity? Is the drive new, and/or is this a new installation of this drive with this motherboard? What does CMOS (motherboard bios) show for the drive capacity. Do you know how to get in, and more importantly how to get out of the CMOS without changing anything? If CMOS has an "auto" hard drive configuration setting it's generally best to use that rather than specify the Cylinder-Heads-Sectors of the drive in the CMOS. Sometimes having a hard CHS configuration set on the first page creates a problem but "auto" works fine. This is the case with the FIC motherboard I'm currently using. That could be enough to create your problem. Set hard drive "mode" to "auto" also [a separate setting]! This could likely be the problem. After checking that the general information page drive configuration is "auto", open any CMOS page about "detect hard drive" you might have and run it to check what the CMOS can actually see. Do not be surprised if you get a list of three configurations for a drive. The question is: "Does one of them show the entire capacity of the drive?" Exit this CMOS page, without selecting anything if you can, and DO then go back and doublecheck (likely needing to reset) the first page configuration is still auto (it will usually get values plugged in when you use the detect function). Remember to reset "mode" to "auto" also![see other things I've written about CMOS for background about how to get in, get out without saving (BEWARE THIS IS NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE), etc.] Sorry if this has been too general, but CMOS vary widely and it's difficult to be specific. -Gary-

-Gary-
[newbie] Linux/Networking/Firewall
Hoping for some help here: I previously had the following setup within my network at my residence. 1 Linux box w/ 2 NIC cards. 1 connected to the DSL modem, and 1 to a HUB where other computers throughout the house are connected. I configured NIC 1 for the IP address given to me by my DSL provider, and configured the other NIC for the private network IP range 196.168.x.x. Next I configured IP Forwarding and Masquerading, and alas had everything set up and working perfectly. Some online games won't allow duplicate IP addresses to be seen on the game server, and as all computers within my private net were sharing the 1 IP address provided by the DSL provider, only one computer at a time to could be gaming. I've recently acquired a different DSL package, which gives me 5 static IP address, so I should be able to configure my network as I hoped. Obviously, I could have just put all computers, and the DSL modem on my HUB and life would be good from a gaming perspective, however, I would very much like to have a firewall installed that helps protect against intruders. Under this scenario, I'd have to install a firewall on each PC to gain some protection...what a hassle. What I'd like to do is configure my Linux box like I had before, but replace the Private network with additional IP's that I gained. I tried setting this up, but fell short after realizing that Linux acting as a router can't route unless there are two different networks (IP sets) to route between. Since all my machines IP's belong to the same network (IP set), I can't "route" per se. What I came across were some HOWTO's on bridging+firewall. Essentially the bridge creates a virtual NIC that binds the two together, and I place the firewall (IPchains) on this virtual NIC. I configured it, set it up, and appear to be accomplishing my goal. The firewall stuff is working on every machine, and of course gaming is now a reality. In summary, my question is this. Is this the best/only approach I can take in setting up my environment? Is there a way to accomplish this by setting up my own route tables? The reason I ask is because when everything is "idle" on my network, I see blips on the DSL modem about every 3 seconds or so. I've narrowed it down to the bridge stuff, as I can bring the bridge down, and the blipping stops. I don't know what is happening, and I don't believe that the bridge is impacting performance much, still I don't know, so I thought I'd pose the question to the experts out there. [newbie] Configuring an Ehternet Adapter
Hi! I am a brand new Mandrake user and appreciate very much the initiative of a list supporting dummies like me! I have a Network card (PCI) provided by Road Runner, an american cable services provider. They do not support Linux users. I feel like I am close to the goal of making this card work, but it still doesn't. OK, I stop chatting, here are the details: *My card has been detected at boot time. It said it was a "Davicom ethernet 100/10 Mbit DM9102". I used the configure option. It added -as one could expect- the line "alias eth0 dmfe" in conf.modules. I know it is the right driver as it was the one which was provided with the card. *There is no IRQ conflict. *The card is detected by the BIOS at boot time, before loading Linux. It gives the right device ID and IRQ. *In the KDE Control Center, section PCI, I can also read the card specifications with the right device ID, IRQ and io address. BUT LINUX STILL DOESN'T DETECT IT AT BOOT TIME, AND THE DRIVER IS NOT LOADED. Hence I cannot read any "eht0..." line when I use "dmesg". I receive no error message or "FAILED". *If I do "lsmod", my module (dmfe) does not appear. *In the IO section of KDE Control Center, "eth0" does not appear. *Then if I do "insmod dmfe" or "modprobe dmfe", things are better as I can see "dmfe (unused)" in "lsmod" and "eth0" in the IO section. But "eth0" does not appear in the IRQ section of te KDE Control Center. I guess I gave all the details I could.I've read about a 100 times the Ethernet Howto. I learned a lot and went further thanks to it but it is not able to help me any more. I've spent almost two weeks on that problem and still don't want to give up! But it is hard as without the Internet, I cannot reach the computer autarky!!! Still have to use the University computers, running Windows 95... I thank very very much the Linux guru who will help me! See you! Nicolas

I think it comes as a zipped tar file but rather than source it's distributed as binary files. What that means is that if you simply execute tar xvzf knapster.gtz it will stick the executable, man page, and even a knapster icon into the proper directory. Proper in this case is /usr/local/kde/bin so the easiest thing to do is create an icon that will execute /usr/local/kde/bin/knapster. Cheers --- Larry

Re: [newbie] copying music cd onto hard drive
Is it possible to copy music cd's onto the hard drive that you can then play back without having to load the cd in the cdrom. Sure...grip comes with LM. This will take tracks off your CD by calling cdparanoia (also comes with LM) . It will then hand the result to some program (I downloaded bladeenc) which makes an .mp3 that's compatible with XMMS. You need to alias the external interface to act as all 5 external "real" IP addresses a,d use ipmasqadm to port forward the incoming requests to the appropriate masqeud internal IP address. The format for setting IP aliasing is (where the "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"s correspond to the IP addresses and subnet info from your ISP): /sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx netmask xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx broadcast xxx.xxx.xxx.255 repeat for each aliased eth0 IP (eth0:1, eth0:2, eth0:3, etc.), and then create ipchains rules for firewalling each aliased IP. In the firewall script, make sure the gaming port is open for all aliased IPs. Install ipmasqadm and set port forwarding rules for each aliased IP to each corresponding masqued internal IP. I believe the syntax is as follows, but you should read the ipmasqadm HOW-TOs to be sure.: (Assuming your internal network is on192.168.x.x, and the Gaming Port is "") /sbin/ipmasqadm -a -P tcp -L xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -R 192.168.xxx.xxx Let me know if this helps, or if I've screwed something up in the translation. :-) --Greg - Original Message - From: "Wignall, Mark T" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hoping for some help here: I previously had the following setup within my network at my residence. 1 Linux box w/ 2 NIC cards. 1 connected to the DSL modem, and 1 to a HUB where other computers throughout the house are connected. [newbie] large hard disk
A few months ago I bought a Maxtor Diamondmax 40 gig hard drive. I installed it with Windows 98 using the included Maxblast Plus software floppy. The software included a BIOS overlay called EZ BIOS. Everything installed correctly and gave me two 20 gig partitions labeled D: and E: Whenever I booted up I saw the words EZ BIOS on the screen after the Compaq startup logo disappeared. (I have a Compaq Presario 4834 about 2 years old). When I set up a dual boot with Linux, I put Linux on the Maxtor 40 gig drive. I never did check to see how many gigs I was actually getting but the install seemed to indicate I had 40 gigs available. Since then I've had to remove Linux temporarily. I repartitioned and reformatted the drive using DOD fdisk, but fdisk tells me I only have 8 gigs available on that drive. I no longer see the EZ BIOS at boot. When I try to reformat with the Maxblast floppy it seems to partition the drive into two 20 gig non-dos partitions. Fdisk shows those two non-dos partitions but still says I have only 8 gigs available. If I try to reformat the two partitions into DOS partitions, it will only let me have the 8 gigs. Any ideas? Thank you to the experts out there. Joe

Seriously - look around your local area - ask your colleagues It should not matter whether the ISP is "Linux Friendly" data is data is data and that is all you exchange with the ISP some isps want specific data such as windows aps that run on the system Huh? Re: [newbie] sound cards
While Windows has taken "unpredictable" to a new high, it's none of the Windows software drivers are even loaded when Linux is running so you're right; their residence on a hard drive won't affect anything. You're also right that changing the BIOS will affect Linux. this maybe true, however you can get info using the inf file found in windows about a peice of hardware that the hardware sometimes wont tell you. This is the case with pci cards sure linux detects its there but doesnt allways I think the significant thing in this thread (about whether removing Windows drivers would help Linux) is whether Linux can get any information from Windows device drivers. I'd submit the answer is, as I suggested, no. detect what it is, or who made it. Re: [newbie] large hard disk
DOS will not see anything past the 1028 cylinder limit--approximately 7.8GB (sually rounded by DOS to 8GB). You do not need the "EZ-BIOS" app. to run properly. If you are only installing linux, then scrap the DOS utilities, and only use the installer (I'm assuming Mandrake). Use "expert mode" and when it gets to the partitioning sections, make the following partitions: /boot16MB to 50MB depending on how many versions of Linux or kernels you plan to run. swap (twice your RAM) /1GB or 2GB or more (/usr 1GB or 2GB if you want to--not necessary.) /homeThe rest or sized as you wish. When the BIOS boots, it will see only the /boot partition and be happy. The linux kernel will load and see everything. If you want to dual boot, stick windows in first--it doesn't like living with another OS, unless the install thinks it's going to be the only one there. If you want to partition 20GB for windows, and 20GB for linux, use the MaxBlast diskette, but only install on one partition.. you can delete and re-allocate the second 20GB of space during the "expert" install of MDK. --Greg - Original Message - From: "Joseph Bourque" [EMAIL PROTECTED] A few months ago I bought a Maxtor Diamondmax 40 gig hard drive. [newbie] ANSI C++ library
In the past month or so at least two people asked about locating iostream.h under Mandrake. I haven't done any C++ coding and so couldn't answer their question but it seemed an odd one since, by appearances, LM installs the standard GNU compilers/libraries. I stuck it on a "check this out" list I have and that's exactly what I did today. The results? Well, I'm simply scratching my head - there is no standard ANSI C++ library to be found. Finding this pretty darn amazing I loaded up the install and went into expert mode to see I could find. Guess what? If you click on C++ in the development section you're great by a msg that says this is GNU C++ BUT it does NOT include the ANSI C++ library. What's up with that? What's the point of a C++ compiler without the standard library? At the time I felt like Sherlock Holmes; I'd solved a case but it wasn't a question I was asking :-) Then I went to compile/install Quanta and lo an beholderror...iostream.h not found (grin). The plot thickens. I bopped over to GNU.org and can't find anything that appears to be an ANSI library. What's it called these days? I know they have one as I used several versions of it when we were all chasing the definition of that library. But that was on Solaris, not Linux. Can anyone help? A search name perhaps...preferably for binaries? Cheers --- Larry

Or have I missed read the info about Arkeia. I wish to backup to a disk drive. Will this utility backup to a disk drive? The October issue of Linux Journal reviews several backup utilities, including Arkeia. You are correct in determining that it is for tape backups, in fact, it assumes that you're doing it from one machine to another over a network, in client/server fashion. I'm not sure what you're trying to backup to a disk drive but you might consider using one or more of your basic Linux tools. For instance, you could simply create tar files and copy them to the other drive (or create them there). If you want to put actual, accessible file systems on the backup drive you can use tar like: *example presumes you're at the base of a tree you want backed up tar cf - / . | (cd /where_you_want_a_copy; tar xvf -) Someone here, can't remember who, uses cpio to do his backups to another drive. However, depending on CMOS settings the device parameters could change across a reboot into Linux.
