[newbie] How to use the fax?

2005-01-21 Thread Rhein Christophe
Hello,
I would like to send faxes from my notebook using my modem and OpenOffice.
I have KsendFax, KdeprintFax and Kfax installed.
I tried to use them but with no success.
Is there a way to type my texte in oppenoffice and then send it from there?
What file format shall I use for sending a faxs?
How shall I setup the software to use my modem?
Thank you
Christophe

set your xperience level to 'Expert')

Hello,
It reades key and I tried the 2 other propositions but with no success.
I really don't know if it comes from the fact that it is a DVD burner
combo (MATSHITAUJ-831D) or that I got the notebook from France because I
can watch the Zone 2 Pal DVDs and that is it!
Really strange and I need to watch some movies for my classes.

Did you find the place in xine's configuration where you tell it which zone
you are going to be watching? Sorry, I can't remember where it is, and I
don't have xine installed at the moment.

Yes it is in the Media panel and I changed it to 2 because all my DVDs
are French or bought in Turkey.
Still no progress

It did exactly what you asked it to - it removed all your media.

How can I get the medias back because all are locked?

It depends, really, on whether you have a broadband connection. If you do, go
to easyurpmi.zarb.org and set up sources for main, contrib and all the other
options that it gives you. The instructions on how to use it a very clear
and you should have no problems. You will not need your cds again, as you
will download the latest packages of everything available to you.

If you don't have broadband you will want your cds back. To get that, put CD1
into your drive and in a root console type
urpmi.addmedia --distrib cdrom removable://mnt/cdrom

It will set up sources to match your set of CDs.

I'm assuming you have libdvdcss installed from PLF, or did you compile it
yourself?

If you compiled it yourself, where did it get installed? It may not be on
your lib path. If so, I recommend installing from the PLF instead, at
http://plf.zarb.org/, you can configure a urpmi source for it at
http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/.

If you used PLF, do you also have all the PLF versions of Xine MPlayer
installed? Here's what I have installed (not all are needed for DVD's, but
it means you get most Win formats supported as well):
 libdvdcontrol	- from plf
 libdvdcss2	- from plf
 libdvdnav4	- from mdk
 libdvdplay	- from mdk
 libdvdread	- from mdk
 libcss	- from plf
 libxine1	- from plf
 mplayer	- from plf
 mplayer-gui	- from plf
 real-codecs	- from plf
 xine-arts	- from plf
 xine-faad	- from plf
 xine-flac	- from plf

 xine-ui	- from mdk
 xine-vcdx	- from mdk
 xine-win32	- from plf
 win32-codecs	- from plf
 xanim-codecs	- from plf

I think that about covers it :-)

I've just finished burning a DVD and went to try it out with kaffeine or totem

A lot of CD players will not play CD-R or CD/RE disks
but are you burning then as .wav files?

[newbie] Back again...Booting slow

2005-01-08 Thread Rhein Christophe
Hello,
I'm back to the list after not knowing why I didn't access to the list a
few months?!!
I have a new ACER Aspire 1680 notebook since 2 weeks and I installed MDK
10.1 community.
Of course I had Win XP installed on the machine and MDK installed lilo
to boot the system.
Then I decided to remove XP by erasing the HD by instqlling again MDK.
Now I have only linux on my toaster.
Question:
1. do I still need lilo to start MDK since I don't use another system?
If not how do I remove lilo?

2. When my computer starts I get an Acer page to access the BIOS (F2),
is it possible to remove that screen or not?

3. When MDK is loading and checking all the parameters it takes a long
time (I think it is after firewire control), is it the same for you
because MDK 9.1 was faster?

4. When I power down the notebook I have the finish by pressing the
button to turn of the machine. I know there is a trick around but I
forgot it.

Thanks for your help

[newbie] HP 1350 and what OCR and scaning software to use?

2004-05-03 Thread rhein
Hello,
I bought a HP psc 1350 multifunction for the school and I want to use it

difference with 1350)

now it is printing.

One small problem: If I turn on the printer after I started the
computer, I get a test paper printed out every time. Does any one have
the same problem? Is it coming from the fact that I setup not exactly
the psc 1350 driver?

What software do you recommend for scanning pictures and for text?
I googled and found xsane, kooka and GTK-ocr (they are also on the MDK
9.2cds)...
Is there a way to save strait to PDF format?

Any comments?

Re: [newbie] more K3B problems

2004-05-01 Thread rhein
I have the following problems:

  1. I can not use the audio project in K3B, I tried to burn 26 MP3
songs with it and the preview filed up the cd(about 500MB) and
after it hanged for hours trying to burn. Then I took the same
files and used file project and I got a clean 50 mb cd! Strange,
 no??
  2. I use a lot rewritable cds to backup and take them to work... but
when I try to add a directory on a cd. I get non stop the erase
RWCD message window before starting burning (I have to quickly
click between 2 windows to cancel the burning process). So the
only way to make it work is to copy all the directories back to my
computer and then start from scratch a new project... What a waste
of time! Maybe I'm doing something wrong???
Why is it not possible to use a cd-rw like a HD and just drag and drop
documents?

it?
Thanks

No, it shouldn't touch the software itself. Files and folders in any
home directory only affect that user. That's why they are there :-) A
program installed in your home folder wouldn't be useable by anybody
else on the system. So, most programs are installed in places like
/usr/bin or similar, but settings that are personal to you are put in
your home folder. They put a period at the start of the file name so
you don't have to see them if you don't want to. Removing one of these
'dot' files means that the program launches with the 'factory' defaults
the next time and recreates a 'dot' file for your user. It's a good
trouble shooting technique when something is not working right to backup
the 'dot' file that program uses (e.g. rename the .kde folder to
kdebackup) and launch the program again to see what happens.
Now, having said all that, I think there is a way to install a
'local' copy of open office. (Exception to every rule) It wouldn't hurt
to try 'which soffice' at a command prompt so you know for sure where
the open office program itself actually is.

  1. To get the name of the tracks do you have to be connected? I tried

Yes, names are not stored on cd-audio format. When you insert an audio
cd, the player (i.e. grip) calculates a 'hash' value based on the
index of the cd and uses it as a keyword to retrieve the titles from
e.g. freedb.freedb.org. If it manages to get them, it stores them on
your local disk (typically under $HOME/.cddb) , so next time you play
the cd you don't need to be connected to get the titles.

  2. If I want to play the mp3 files on a music box or a TV/DVD player
what riper and format shall I use?

I use xmms for mp3/wav, grip to play/rip/encode audio cd.

  3. What is the differences in the encoder: oggenc, mp3encoder,
bladeenc, lame, l3enc, xingmp3enc, gogo, flac?

You already got some answers to this. Let me add that lame is not
included in the MDK cds for license issues (lame uses an encoding algo
which is patented by Fraunhofer Institute). Whenever I need to install
it, I download the sources from the official lame site
(http://lame.sourceforge.net/) and build them.

No, but you might have something running in the background when you open it

slow against the others. Certainly it is the slowest program to kick in on my

4 seconds? Cripes, in KDE in 9.2.1 it takes me about a minute and

starting with top running, and the most CPU intensive thing

Personally I like XCDRoast - though many people hate it. It doesn't
copy audio cds on the fly, which is probably why it's not popular.
Instead you have to burn an image to your hard drive, then burn the
image to disk. However, audio cds are something I rarely do. It's big
advantage, ever since 9.1, is that it can read from an atapi drive,
even though the burner must be scsi-emulated.

[newbie] Burning cd with k3b

Hello,
Is there a help file for the K3b?
I checked on k3b website and nothing.
In the help menu from K3b I have nothing...no handbook.
In fact I try to copy an audio cd on a dvd/rw combo driver and I don't
really know what to do.
I wanted first to copy the files to a music directory on my computer and
then burn from there the cd. In fact I can not see the MP3 files in
Konqueror... Strange but I can play the files in Kaffeine for example.
I put an other cd with MP3 files in the driver and I can see them in
Konqueror... :-(
By the way is there a solution to burn strait from the original cd to a
new cd without making a manual copy to my HD?
I use K3b 0.9 who came with MDK 9,2.
Thank you

Still no dvd ...
Then I had to check the pass to the dvd player since I have a combo player.
So I changed this in my Kaffeine player /dev/dvd to /dev/scd0.
Now I can watch DVDs and almost remove win XP. ;-)
I paste here the mail I got from the kaffeine mailing list:
Open kaffeine

correctly set? It should be set to the drive that is used as a dvd. If you
have a DVD/CDRW combo it should be something like /dev/scd0 or /dev/sr0.

2004-04-02 Thread rhein
Hell
His there a limitation with the DVD regions under linux like with XP?
I have zone 1 and 2 DVDs. What a stupid thing this limitation since you
can buy original region 1 movies in a region 2 country.
I looked at Kaffeine and I can change the region in the input section of
the xine config window but is there a limit of changes like in XP?
Thanks
Christophe

[newbie] Still DVD problem

2004-03-30 Thread rhein
Hello,
I'm still not able to watch DVDs with xine and Kaffeine but I have
installed those packages:
libdvdread 0.9.4.2 mdk, libxine 1-1.0 rc3.2plf and libdvdcss2-1.2.8. lplf.
I can whatch VCDs, lissen to cds and MP3 with xine and Kaffeine. Burn
cds, read R-writeble.
I found also this on a xine download page:

By default, xine expects to find your DVD-ROM at //dev/dvd/. Creating a
symbolic link to your device is recommended (for example, //dev/hdc/ or
//dev/scd0/). The command below should work for most users:

 # ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd

Since I have a combo driver I don't know how to check the pass to my
driver. Shall I use this command and will I not mess up my cd-rom driver?
Thanks

[newbie] Don't get the signature think...

2004-03-21 Thread rhein
Hello,
I installed the urpmi files (update, main and f...)... when I check in
Rpmdrake they have a signature.
I spend 2 hours downloading packages to run mediaplayer...
And than I get the bad signature warning... I continue to install and
then an other telling me files are corrupted.
How can they be corrupted when I updated the urpmi files last night?
I red the Madrake secure pages that one of you mailed a few days ago...
I still don't get it... Why if the ftp urpmi files have a signature,
the packages can still have a bad signature?
Just one last thing, I do not work from a konsole but with rpmdrake.
Thanks for your help

No. That is why rpms are so nice.

Whenever a ./configure fails read the error messages carefully. They will
usually mention a file name, or a package name.
To find the missing package do

urpmf string
where string is the file name(or part of it) mentioned in the error message.
Then install the '-devel' version of the package which contains that file.
In this example it simply says it cannot find X Well obviously X is installed,
so it must mean it needs 'XFree86-devel'
Install that then try again.

Thanks to Derek I installed the xfree devel package...
I started the install over and a new error message asking me to install
Qt3...
Since I learned that the soft has to be installed I go to rpmdrake to do
it... So many entries I choose the main one with the dependencies...
After I go back to my console and start over again to install the quick
launch...
Same error message... So I go back to rpmdrake and select all the Qt3
packages left.
And I get the signature error message. I pass and then I get an other
error message... end of the story.
Could some one tell me what this Qt3 is for and give me the list of the
packages to install?
I promise to use rpms all the time :-) But in this case there was none!
By the way I don't understand why this quick launch is not coming with
open office like under windows (Ups I said it ;-) )
In the meantime I'm going paragliding for a change.
Have a nice Sunday

The firewall is blocking all connections in and out, thereby limiting
any internet connection. Only block what you'll never use, or specify
ports instead. It happens to be a very good firewall. For instance, I
was talking through gAIM once, while playing with the firewall.
Suddenly, no communication. Interesting, how well it blocks connections.

For a starter you will need port 80 open for the web

'on boot' is checked off. If not, check it. Then reboot.

Where there's a will, there's a way.

First, download the packages acpi and acpid. Then, go into Control
Center and Boot Options. Find your default image, and click modify. In
the append line make sure it DOESN'T say 'acpi=off' or 'acpi=ht', and
make sure it does say 'nolapic'. Then, reboot, and you should have
your battery monitor in the system tray. If it still doesn't want to
work, reply and we'll diagnose the problem.

You can't unmount a /home partition on a running system, because it's
in use. You need to boot into single user mode for that (no graphic
environment, only a shell), or boot from the MDK rescue disk into a
shell.

What is the difference between /home and /user directories?

/home contains the home directories of your users.
Standard MDK installation doesn't have /user but /usr. /usr contains
almost all the executables - including gnome, kde, X. It does not
normally contain user files.

What type of file system should I use if I can not modify my /home
directory?

Resizing the /home partition means loosing all the data there
contained. A better option would be to format the freed up space as a
new ext3 partition, say hda9, and then mount the new partition
somewhere under /home. For example, you might dedicate it to a user
(in this case you'd mount it under /home/newuser, for example), or to
increase the space dedicated to an already existing user (for example,
if userX needs additional space for mp3, you might create a
/home/userX/mp3 directory and mount hda9 there).

Thanks

You can't.

Because of the size of the kernel the image will no longer fit on a

Should the need arise use the installation cd and boot to rescue mode.

Christophe,

I'm only running 9.1, so I'm not sure how relevant it is to
your situation. I have the battery indicator on mine. I'm
running KDE and found you can set it this way:
Click the K menu
Click Configuration
Click KDE
Click PowerControl
Click Laptop Battery
You should see a check box for Show Battery Monitor. Make
sure it's set.

You may want to look for something similar.

As for life in XP vs, Linux, I don't see much battery life
difference between the two on my laptop. Perhaps it has
somehting to do with power settings in each? XP may have a
more conservative power use profile.
Just some thoughts

Mark

Absolutely, but on those specs a Slaclware9.1 would run
acceptably (maybe even faster) too.
Without the heavy weight Windowmanagers like KDE and
Gnome even Mandracke9.1 will run OK providing there's
not too many unnecessary services running.
Good luck,

Slackware is a better choice. DebianAny version of Linux
can run fine on the hardware you said, but yes, Slackware
would be much better. Or Free BSD. If you can install
Slackware, you can install Free BSD, they look the same and
act almost exactly a like.

3/ By the way is the root partition not too big with 5,8 GB and only
27% used? There is a lot of free space and I will not install a lot of
new softs.
4/I would like to shrink my windows drive (starting slowly to remove XP)
is there any trick to do it or can I unmount and resize it in the

That sounds like the hidden restore partition I mentioned - the sort

Christophe, many on-line banks depend on pop-ups for their
authentication process. Mine does, and yours may do. If you have
turned off pop-ups you should temporarily switch them back on, then
note the bank's url and go back to the pop-upsettings. Turn them off
again, but mark the bank's url as an exception.

I did this in Mozilla and it worked fine, so I would think that you

Edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and configure it on the way I show

I'm only guesing, but since you say you have a usb mouse,
 which you didn't mention before,
maybe the problem has less to do with the mouse configuration
than maybe the usb setup itself.

KDE - information - USB Devices, displays the usb hubs,
does the mouse show up there ?
If so, what does it say .

Hello,
I'm using the touchpad on my notebook (compaq nx9005) without any additional

[newbie] Totem not reading

Hello,
I tried to watch a DVD with Totem and I get this error message:
The movie '/dev/cdroms/cdrom0' could not be read.
I tried also with other DVDs and I get the same answer.
Music cds are playing but DVDs.
I tried also to drag and drop, under root, files to a RW cd and it
doesn't work. I tried then by opening K3b software and there I can not
add directories to my rw-cd without reformating the cd.
DO I need a different software or is something wrong in the settings?

Just copy and paste the script into your favorite editor (the script
starts with #!/bin/bash and ends with exit). Edit paths as necessary.
Save it and then make it executable by opening a terminal and giving
 the command

 chmod +x scriptname

where scriptname is whatever name you gave the script when you saved it.

Do you really have a directory called /user?

You also have to separate directories/files with a slash, i.e.
 /user/bin/firefoxbugfix.

I can't look at it either but with Mandrake hardware detection routines run
at boot up and if you constantly plug devices in and then unplug them, the
hardware detection routines are going to continually try to change your
configuration, including removing some drivers, installing others
repeately. For some devices, it is often better to just hook them up, get
the drivers working and then turn off the hardware detection service so
that your configuration just stays the same until you decide to change it.

Here's a bit of reading material for you:

 Directory of Linux Commands; http://www.onlamp.com/linux/cmd/

 You don't _have_ a /user/bin directory, you have a /usr/bin directory.

DON'T try to execute anything with the former, use the latter. If you don't
have the permissions already so screwed up that the system is locking you
out of things that should be available to you just follow the syntax you
are offered by the people on the list and be sure to type URLs as they
actually appear, not as you *think* they appear.

Do you really have a directory called /user?

You also have to separate directories/files with a slash, i.e.
   /user/bin/firefoxbugfix.

   Todd

I'm not sure why you're trying to change permissions on a file anyway. Let
alone an entire system directory/partition. I haven't been paying
 attention.

Then again I'm not the one having so much difficulty, am I? (-:

don't know why but it works!
3/ Wine is running but not my Toolbook software... I will try the toolbook

4/ I installed Firefox and it opens as my main browser.

I have never had such quick answers as on this list... I'll have more soon
