They may say it does not, and they ,may try to stop you using it, but it will work. Some ISPs are quite Linux friendly. Plusnet and Pipex come to mind. What is more important is the ADSL modem you use. Some are simply not supported, and others are not supported very well. For example the USB modem BT supply free with their broadband service is AFAIK NOT supported, while the Alcatel USB modem supplied by many ISPs such as Pipex IS supported. Avoid PCI ADSL modems. They are only supported with proprietary firmware and while models such as the Connectix does work with Linux it is such a pain to get working it is not worth the effort. The safest hardware to use is a standalone ethernet connected ADSLmodem/router. These are scarcely any more expensive than a DSL modem and offer firewall protection. The ebuyer.co.uk own brand single port DSL router works well and is really cheap. An external DSL modem/router looks just like an ordinary Ethernet connection to Linux and does not need any special drivers. As you can see ...works with Eclipse :-) Eclipse might not be cheapest, but is definitely reliable and no limits. I use a router, but I've just set up my mates box on Mandrake 10.1 and Eclipse with one of those little silver speedtouch thingys. Speedtouch suite worked like a charm. The problem could be with the Ethernet card I guess or some wrong configuration already in my Linux. When you use a router the computer neither knows nor cares that there is a DSL modem inside the router. As far as the computer is concerned it is just an ordinary Ethernet connection. The DSL Connection wizard is there for DSL **modems**. Your modem is the other side of your router so the computer does not have to worry about it. If your router was already configured for use with Windows, then it should not need reconfiguring for Linux. If you cannot reach the router admin when you enter 10.0.0.2 in a browser URL line, then that implies networking between your Computer and Linux is not working. Fix that before worrying about your ADSL connection. Dumb question - Is this a one port router - in other words, can you only have one computer hooked to it at a time? If so, it sounds like you are trying to change computers hooked to it. If that is the case, you may have to power cycle it before it will talk to a different NIC. I have found this to be true of most of the DSL router/modems. It sounds as though you have a configuration problem, so the problem now is to work out a troubleshooting scheme. First, though, I think that you talked about 10.0.0.2 as the address for the router. Do you know if this is correct? Can you check the configuration in the windows box? In fact, I would say that the first thing to do is to write down all the network configuration screens in the windows box if that is working correctly. USB connection in Linux is probably possible, but I have no experience of setting it up. Ethernet connection should work very well, so if you are not currently using Ethernet I recommend you try attaching an Ethernet cable. If that box was not ticked you can go to MandrakeControlCentreSystemServices to start networking without having to reboot. If there is no IP address can you confirm that the cabling is OK? There is probably a little light on your computer's Ethernet connector. It should light when the cable is correctly inserted. There is probably a similar light on your router. Also check your Routers configuration to make sure the Ethernet ports are not disabled. When accessing the router use the mozilla(or firefox) browser. Sometimes these embedded devices do not like non MicroSoft browsers. When you use a router the computer neither knows nor cares that there is a DSL modem inside the router. As far as the computer is concerned it is just an ordinary Ethernet connection. The DSL Connection wizard is there for DSL **modems**. Your modem is the other side of your router so the computer does not have to worry about it. Hi Russel, I also have a Billion 5100 modem/router and have had problems with it while having it setup as ADSL, it was not detecting the Internet connection at all while set up with ADSL connection even though it was picking up the Ethernet connection. I changed my settings to LAN connection (After all a router is on a LAN) and I am no longer having any problems with my Internet connection. It is being detected correctly and using all the settings created on the Modem. I hope this helps. But if your ISP doesn't, or if you are using a hardware firewall, then you use the lan setting. Confusing, isn't it? You have the same prblems setting up a hardware firewall. my ISP has a 2 stage log-on process. 1. to phone co. ADSL service. 2. to ISP Unfortunately, the log-on page at 2 uses Active-X Till now I've logged on using windows on a dual-boot, when connected rebooted in linux. I've kept a windows partition exclusively for this but now want the extra disk space. Many of these ADSL modems are well closed source as another responder says and next to impossible to get working, particularly if you are a 'newbie'. I had an Alcatouch Speedmodem 330 (ugly beetle looking thing) that my ISP gave me when I signed up. Drivers existed for the standard Speedtough that would work with some poking apparently but getting the 330 to work seemed like a MAJOR headache. They seem to be similar to Mandrake, because they once took their rp-pppoe package (you can see that in the changelog), but I wouldn't imply too much into that. That they both use the same installer (RPM) doesn't necessarily mean that they are compatible. If you are lucky, a package works on a different distro. Either because all Linux based distributions are created using the same software pool or because the other distro has the goal to be compatible to the other one (early versions of Mandrake were full compatible with RedHat). An exeption is when a RPM is explicitly declared to be a general one. But that also only implies that it will work on the more common Linux based distros. but I have learned that when dealing with computing and you have a problem it is usually the cause that you don't believe that is actually the cause. Which version of Mandrake do you use? ppp-2.4.1 belong to 9.1. But 9.1. comes with the following rp-pppoe: $ rpm -q rp-pppoe rp-pppoe-3.5-2mdk $ rpm -q --requires rp-pppoe ppp = 2.4.1 [...] In other words, you should have been unable to install rp-pppoe-3.5-2mdk without ppp-2.4.1 at least. Nah...it is a fresh Mandrake 9.1-install where I have added both PPP and RP-PPPoE afterwards. RP-version is 3.5-3 which I downloaded from rpmfind.net. In windows, assuming your cd is E: the path is E:\Mandrake\RPMS\speedtouch-1.0-3mdk.i586.rpm (I'm back in windows now - so, going from memory) Think it installs in usr/share/doc/speedtouch and in usr/share/speedtouch It expands into several files including several text files with HowTo's etc. When I succesfully installed the Speedtouch USB in LM8.2 (long time ago) I thing it was necessary to remove my network card completely and only put it back after the Speedtouch is working. You also needed to put the mgmt.o file in as usr/share/speedtouch/mgmt.o Then entered ISP (bt) connection stuff (username etc. - I probably entered the bt prefix as with windows - i.e. mine is [EMAIL PROTECTED] - you are probably something other than hg11). I chose to 'connect at bootup' Rebooted and bingo - worked first time. Now the downer. Others tried this sequence but it didn't work for them. Wish you luck. I was finally able to actually start learning Linux with it! Then of course there came closing down problems which led to more probs and that was the end of a working ML8.2 system. I can't easily install a new Linux on my tri-boot machine - Win2000, Win98 (for work reasons) Mandrake - so it wasn't until I noticed that vers 9 was available that I got the enthusiasm to disturb my machine again with a new Linux install. I was at least confident that problems with the USB Speedtouch had been solved way back in the 8.2 past. Instead there seems to have been a step backward. As the USB-Speedtouch is supplied by Britain's largest ISP British Telecom, to all it's ADSL customers there must be so many thousands of punters out there needing it to work with Mandrake I am amazed that Mandrake seem to have chosen to 'withdraw their support??' for it. Mandrake detects all my other peripherals but not this bloody modem. Kernel - Shmernel! I haven't even learned how to escape from the gui and get to the command line yet - that's another prob I've got. (I was weaned on CPM and DOS so I can appreciate the value of using the command line). [newbie] ADSL - starting at boot
I have a server using 8.2 running as a ADSL firewall. Works very nicely. When I run Mandrake Control Center System Services, I can see adsl listed as a service and can start it successfully from there. Clicking on the on boot button also works, but it doesn't stick. i.e. Running MCC again shows it not selected to start at boot time and true enough - it doesn't. I have put a one line script in /etc/rc3.d to make it start, but it would appear to be a more elegant solution if the services panel did its job. Am I missing something here? Make sure you have pppoe installed to run on top of eth0(network card). Hi there. I've got a doubt. I'm using Mandrake 8.1, and my Internet connection is an ADSL link with an Alcatel SpeedTouch USB. The protocol used by Telepac (my ISP) is PPPoE/Bridging. The thing is that in both instalation and in the configuration tool, the options you have are: 1. PPPoE - Won't do, because it assumes you have a modem with ethernet adapters. 2. SpeedTouch USB - Won't do because AFAIK, it assumes the protocol is PPPoA (and in the countries list, Portugal isn't there). A nice and working tutorial ia at http://www.zoftware.org/adsl-pppoe/. The problem is that I would have to get a non-mandrake kernel, which I can't do at this time, because of my video card drivers (they were compiled by the manufacturer to a small number of distros, and for the kernel in them). Hi, Im sure it is because I screwed something up on the install that mine is not setup correctly. However I did not want to retry it as installing Mandrake 8.1 on a P90 is a little painful. I had a few crashes as well. Because of the spec of my machine I did a fairly small install. Just enough for the firewalling. Then later rpm'd the NDS server as well. Thanks for the info on the network scripts. Ill look into those files when I get home. Re your question. I dont think it will be a problem. In route you can define routes to addresses which dont exist and they will kick in once they are available. So the fact that ppp0 drops from time to time should not matter. First of all can I say its really good that 8,1 has added support for the Alcatel SpeedTouch modem. This has simplified things alot for me! Now onto my problem Ive installed a very small setup of Mandrake 8.1 with firewall support only. The intention is to run it as a firewall/Name Server/Proxy Server/Web Server on my small network at home. The ADSL modem I have setup is the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB. This seems to work however my routing tables dont seem to be setup correctly. When my machine starts it auto connects (everthing looks fine in /var/log/messages). However I cant ping my ISPs DNS server. When I run route to see the routes setup it hangs until I ctrl-break. If I then add a route to my DNS server I then get all these additional entries in my routing table. If I then add a default route via the device ppp0 everything seems to work from my linux box. Did you set the propper primary and secondary dns server addresses when you set up pppoe? You get these numbers from your ISP. I changed my ADSL password using windows but after that I could not get an ADSL connection using Lunix again so I reconfigured md ADSL several times and still no connection. I then reinstalled Md8+freq2 with the new ADSL password and I got a connection 1st time. Nev

[newbie] adsl/ethernet adapter... (more problems with the NIC now)

i have en realtek 8139 and a 3c900b network card the realtek is connected to my alcatel speedtouch home and the 3c900b to a smal local network. the realtek is eth0 and uses a static ip : 10.0.0.1 subnet : 255.0.0.0 the 3c900b also staic ip : 10.0.0.5 subnet 255.255.255.0 lm8.0 seem to keeping mess up these settings, bij one time loading 2 realtek modules , an other time loading to 3c9x modules, or switching them, or even mess my ip settings up i even tried about every combination of setting even changed my ip settings, even with only one network card , but always with the same result : local network works fine but adsl doesn't work. could it maybe be that there is something with kernel 2.4.3 and adsl or the adsl of mandrake does'nt support belgium, or ...

Ok, this is what how I did mine. eth0 hooked to lan, eth1 hooked to modem. Using linuxconf Assign eth0 your chosen ip submask, assign eth1 neither and check enable routing. Uninstall mdk rp-pppoe, and install the rp-pppoe from roaring penquins site. Run mandrake's connection sharing tool (in control center, (it'll shoot you something about it's already configured, but go on with it cause then it will write the ipforwarding script for ya). Run mandrake's firewall tool. Then open console and type adsl-setup, answer the questions, and type adsl-start. If you can't connect or your other computer's can't connect: type: adsl-stop and ifconfig -a and see if both cards show up. If not, insmod the module needed to run it (for example: insmod tulip ). Then ifconfig -a again and see if they are all listed then type adsl-start. Ok, if your cards still don't get enabled upon restart, you should put: insmod your module for each in /etc/rc.d/rc.local file. But hopefully you won't have to do that. Check your /etc/modules.conf file for those two listings. I've installed LM 7.2. I'm having a devil of a time setting up my ADSL connection. Everything is functioning in MacroHard. I'm using qwest.net's DSL services. A call to "tech support" yielded the standard "we don't support Linux". Fine. He told me that he "doesn't think" they use PPPoE, only DHCP. Great. When I setup ADSL in Linux try to fire up Netscape, I keep getting "server not found" message. Trying to change Linux to DHCP+PPoE, it responds by telling me I'm currently connected to the internet and gives me 2 options. A. Disconnect, or, B. Change my configuration. I am using Qwest DSL and Mandrake 7.2 at this very moment. So I know it works. Question: do you have the Cisco 67x router, or just the internal NIC? I am running the Cisco, which has its own DHCP server built-in. I had to configure the DHCP server to provide my DNS servers and default gateway. If you can't even ping the IP, try another known IP address, like those DNS entries I gave you above. If you are still stuck, then you aren't even getting outside your router, and possibly not even outside your PC. Try pinging your router (the Gateway IP address). If you can't get it, then you are stuck inside your PC. I don't know if it is an idle timeout or not, some ISP's from what I understand are setup to timeout connections if they are idle for a period of time. That's what was going on with my connection. [newbie] adsl and connection loss
hi all ! i am using a alcatel 1000 adsl modem on my mandrake 7.1 linux box. i build up my connection over pptp. no problems establishing connection, but after an unpredictable amount of time my connection drops. it doesnt always happen, sometimes my machine is 3 h online, sometimes its only 1h. when i look at system console there are no error messages, it just seems that the connection was shut down properly (without me causing it) it just says : pppd : LCP terminated by peer connection terminated connect time blah blah sent ...bytes, received ..bytes exit i understand that the connection was dropped by my isps server but i dont know why; i know for sure that there are no "server side" connection timeouts from my isp. is there an option somewhere for the pppd that configures an idle timeout ? and what is this LCP thingy ? thx in advance, --quay -- -Quaylar- Icq# 30932448 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ! [newbie] ADSL in the UK
Has anyone had any luck setting up a UK ADSL connection in Linux using the USB boxes (ie the domestic services not the business one which use ethernet cards) If so what provider were you using? I'm looking at getting ADSL in the new year, I'm not overly bothered about using it in linux, because i triple boot with win98 2000 so i'll be able to use them, it would just be nice.
