[newbie] KDE /K3B problem
Hello all I have Mandrake 10.1 on 2.6.8.1-12mdk win4Lin kernel installed (dual boot with Win) and mostly use KDE. since a recent re-install I had been using the graphical login page, and I noted that it would not retain the faces settings. Trying to run k3b I would end up with a zombie process stalled at finding CD burner. I have upgraded KDE to 3.3, and when I first started, could open MCC. Then I tried to run k3b setup with : [EMAIL PROTECTED] russellb]# ps ax |grep k3b 7606 ?Ds 0:01 kcmshell k3bsetup2 Running mcc from an su console gives a splash screen and another defunct program [EMAIL PROTECTED] russellb]# ps ax |grep drak 9044 pts/3D 0:01 /usr/bin/perl /usr/sbin/drakconf.real I will have to reboot to kill the zombies, but can anyone advise me how to enable k3b, and minimise the risk of recurrences? Re: [newbie] KDE 3.4
Guys, you're beating yourselves up for nothing on this. After you add Thac's RPM's to urpmi, take a moment to install the ICE desktop or some other one. Chances are that you'll have at least 2 desktop environments installed anyway. Log out of KDE, and log back in as root or a normal user, but log into the alternate desktop, no matter what it is. Find Mandrake Control Center, open it and switch your package selection to the third button marked All Packages, By Group. Change that so it reads All Packages, By Medium Repository, and expand the one marked as thac's.rpms. Now have a look at the rpms which have version numbers of 3.4.0-1.mdk10.1.thac. Start with the basics like the i18n package for your preferred language and kdebase or kde-common. Mandrake will automatically select any dependancies. Make sure you install any new packages which may be in Thac's repository which refer to 'mdkkdm', 'mandrake_desk', 'mandrakegalaxy', 'mandrakelinux-create-kde-mdk-menu', 'mandrakelinux-kde-config-file', etc. You get the idea. Keep installing KDE 3.4 in small groups of packages - like all the kdepim packages, or whichever you need. In the process of doing this update, Mandrake will delete (uninstall) any unneeded KDE 3.2 or 3.3 packages. Once you have everything you want or need, you're done. If you've already downloaded the rpms from Thac's site, copy them into /var/cache/urpmi/rpms and MCC will use them instead of downloading fresh copies, saving you some time. Once you're all done, log out of this desktop environment and log back into KDE and enjoy. -- Mr. Geek Registered Linux User #190712 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? The developers have always said that imap support was experimental in 1.7.1/3.2.3, so I'm not complaining, but since there are fixes for many of the problems in the next version it's time to consider moving on. There were times you could install new kde-upgrades in /opt/ which sorted out most problems, but sadly they're not of late any more. And FWIW: I've got kmail/kontact1.7.2 running on kde 3.3.2 with mdk10.2rc3 quite stable and satisfactorybut don't ask me what's the diff: I don't see very much there. Hopefully it's all stability in that respect. As a pop client everything except gpg-agent was running sweetly. This machine (my work-horse:triade1) runs kmail1.7.1 on kde3.2.3 with mdk10.1, but admittedly I don't use imap, only pop-servers. It won't hurt upgrading to 10.2rc3 IMO. It's about as stable as 10.1 official'll ever be...give it a go but don't upgrade, do a fresh install retaining your /home(you'll lose win4lin again, though) I haven't moved win4lin to this box yet anyway, so that's not a problem. sigh I seem to spend 6 months ironing out problems on a new install, only to have to do it all over again because I need maybe just one thing that the existing install can't give me. Re: [newbie] Kde desktop disappeared
Hello all. Just a few thoughts. I bought my Mandrake copy directly from France. No downloads, no screwed CDs, everything should have been perfect. However, while the installation was OK (not a single error), when I started the system up, when loading the Mandrake GUI selector (I actually don't know its name, hope I made myself clear: that is, where you should enter the username and password) the system didn't react. It wasn't frozen because when I entered Ctl+Alt+Backspace, the X system stopped alright. In the first place, I though it had something to do with my hardware. However, when I started up the system WITHOUT authomatic X window startup (that is, only the terminal), and when I write (after the login) # startx the X Window (with KDE) started without problems. Hence, I suspected that the problem was indeed the GUI Selector. Then, in the configuration panel, I changed the default manager from Mandrake's own to KDE's or GNOME and now everything works fine. Maybe you can try something like these, although I don't know how to do it from command line. Greetings, Fernando Gómez. == Registered Linux User 381647. Some weeks ago, I lost Konqueror and had to reinstall the whole KDE. Now, it's the KDE desktop which disappeared suddenly when trying to log in. The desktop just doesn't show up. If the problems don't show up it's a faulty setting in your /home/michel/.kde/ directory.just delete it and check in as you used to. You will lose existing kde settings like those of kmail as well as bookmarks in konqueror etc etc. So if that is a major problem, say so and we'll fine tune what has to be changed/deleted. -- Good luck, HarM Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] KDE disaster
Hi all After my previous effort (see urpme logging 9 Jan) I have dug myself into an ever deeper hole. Being unable to work out what I needed, and having a set of MK 10.1 discs, I decided to upgrade from 10 to 10.1, including installing KDE 3.3. Now I am unable to get beyond a grey screen (no icons or tray) in KDE, but ICEWM will run - sort of. I can launch some programs from terminals including Mozilla, but not firefox or thunderbird which give Gdk-CRITICAL ***: gdk_window_set_title:assertion 'title !=NULL' failed. I presume I have some aspects of Gdk missing, but much googling has failed to show how to find/restore the missing bits. Anyone able to point me in a somewhat helpful direction please? [newbie] kde/urpmi mess
After a recent routine update (urpmi.update -a;urpmi --auto-select), I get this when calling K3B (from anywhere): [EMAIL PROTECTED] brett]# k3b k3b: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libartskde.so.1: undefined symbol: _ZTv0_n28_N4Arts16SynthModule_stub11autoSuspendEv [EMAIL PROTECTED] brett]# Before the (blind) upgrade, K3B had been running great for months. When I trace back all the packages that ultimately provide libartskde.so I find that a)they are all so embedded in the core of KDE that an upgrade would be a hefty undertaking and that b)now neither URPMI nor drakconf work for any kind of directly KDE-related (only) upgrade anyway (they both hang immediately), so it would be a lot of plain old rpming or making. Can anybody suggest a way to begin troubleshooting this? /var/log/messages, urpmi, (etc.) shows nothing significant. system info: MDK 10.1 OE, 2.6.8.1-12mdk, P4 2.66GHz, 512MB KDE 3.2.3 I tried: libk3b2-0.11.18-1.mdk10.1.thac k3b-0.11.18-1.mdk10.1.thac and: k3b-0.11.16-3mdk libk3b2-0.11.16-3mdk Other wierd things are happening too, like my konsole schema is gone, kicker crashes, xtraceroute hangs, etc. kde + urpmi = big mess. How can a proficient beginner avoid these non-productive time-wasters while staying updated?
