Hello Francesco
I went through a series of problems and ended up starting x from the
command line. Everything seems to be working ok from there. It doesn't
start with mandrake display manager and switches to konsole login with kdm.
Googling showed that it had to do with the different login managers. Will
use as is. Thanks for responding.

[newbie] KDE /K3B problem

2005-04-05 Thread Russell Butler
Hello all
I have Mandrake 10.1 on 2.6.8.1-12mdk win4Lin kernel
installed (dual boot with Win) and mostly use KDE. since a recent
re-install I had been using the graphical login page, and I noted that
it would not retain the faces settings.

Trying to run k3b I would end up with a zombie process stalled at
finding CD burner.

I have upgraded KDE to 3.3, and when I first started, could open MCC.
Then I tried to run k3b setup with :
[EMAIL PROTECTED] russellb]# ps ax |grep k3b
 7606 ?Ds 0:01 kcmshell k3bsetup2

Running mcc from an su console gives a splash screen and another defunct
program

[EMAIL PROTECTED] russellb]# ps ax |grep drak
 9044 pts/3D 0:01 /usr/bin/perl /usr/sbin/drakconf.real
I will have to reboot to kill the zombies, but can anyone advise me how
to enable k3b, and minimise the risk of recurrences?

Thanks
Russell

I don't think it is. As far as I know it only works if you have groupware set
up. The kdepim-user list ([EMAIL PROTECTED], joined from the kde website)
would be able to help.

You don't say how you did your 'further investigation' but if it involved
becoming root, there's your answer. Root can change it to anyone you like.
(If it didn't involve root, then open a console, su and give the root
password, then type
chown carlton /home/carlton/.ICEauthority
That should do it.

Re: [newbie] KDE 3.4

2005-03-19 Thread Mr. Geek
Guys, you're beating yourselves up for nothing on this. After you add
Thac's RPM's to urpmi, take a moment to install the ICE desktop or some
other one. Chances are that you'll have at least 2 desktop environments
installed anyway.

Log out of KDE, and log back in as root or a normal user, but log into
the alternate desktop, no matter what it is. Find Mandrake Control
Center, open it and switch your package selection to the third button
marked All Packages, By Group.

Change that so it reads All Packages, By Medium Repository, and expand
the one marked as thac's.rpms. Now have a look at the rpms which have
version numbers of 3.4.0-1.mdk10.1.thac.

Start with the basics like the i18n package for your preferred language
and kdebase or kde-common. Mandrake will automatically select any
dependancies. Make sure you install any new packages which may be in
Thac's repository which refer to 'mdkkdm', 'mandrake_desk',
'mandrakegalaxy', 'mandrakelinux-create-kde-mdk-menu',
'mandrakelinux-kde-config-file', etc. You get the idea.

Keep installing KDE 3.4 in small groups of packages - like all the
kdepim packages, or whichever you need. In the process of doing this
update, Mandrake will delete (uninstall) any unneeded KDE 3.2 or 3.3
packages. Once you have everything you want or need, you're done.

If you've already downloaded the rpms from Thac's site, copy them into
/var/cache/urpmi/rpms and MCC will use them instead of downloading fresh
copies, saving you some time.

Once you're all done, log out of this desktop environment and log back
into KDE and enjoy.

If you remain in KDE whilst updating it, you're asking for trouble.

Well you could try a new (kde)install after removing everything that's
associated...but that'll be a fine mess, prolly.
I gathered that KDE3.4 was out today and could be installed in the /home
directory (or maybe /opt) so as not to interfere with previous versions.

Maybe worth a look, eh?

I haven't considered it until this last week or two, because it wasn't worth
risking problems just for eye-candy. It's only the real problems I'm having
with kmail imap that have made me consider it. The developers have always
said that imap support was experimental in 1.7.1/3.2.3, so I'm not
complaining, but since there are fixes for many of the problems in the next
version it's time to consider moving on.

There were times you could install new kde-upgrades in /opt/ which sorted
out most problems, but sadly they're not of late any more.

And FWIW: I've got kmail/kontact1.7.2 running on kde 3.3.2 with mdk10.2rc3
quite stable and satisfactorybut don't ask me what's the diff: I don't
see very much there. Hopefully it's all stability in that respect.

As a pop client everything except gpg-agent was running sweetly.

This machine (my work-horse:triade1) runs kmail1.7.1 on kde3.2.3 with
 mdk10.1, but admittedly I don't use imap, only pop-servers.

It won't hurt upgrading to 10.2rc3 IMO. It's about as stable as 10.1
official'll ever be...give it a go but don't upgrade, do a fresh install
retaining your /home(you'll lose win4lin again, though)

I haven't moved win4lin to this box yet anyway, so that's not a problem.
sigh I seem to spend 6 months ironing out problems on a new install, only
to have to do it all over again because I need maybe just one thing that the

My personal trick on win4lin: Install their kernel (when it's available), on
the new install and copy (I keep them backed up on the HD as well on
CD) /var/win4lin and /opt/win4lin to resp. /var and /opt.
If you kept your /home/ann/win directory in order it'll run as beforeno

Just for curiosity's sake...are you familiar with the commandline ergo

Executables are found in bin/ and sbin/ directories in linux but very few

Did you try adding a new user (userdrake on the commandline) or deleting the

Executables are found in bin/ and sbin/ directories in linux but very few

I don't know what XFDrake is so I looked where i could find it. I just

Did you try adding a new user (userdrake on the commandline) or deleting the
kde config (.rc files) files Kaj and I suggested?
Yes, but to no avail.
Like your site BTWvery clean and slick:)

I don't know if you are aware of this, but when you update a package, if it is

that the new package kicks in. In the case of kde it would be logging in

Michael, capitalisation is very important. Try it again with
slocate XFdrake

If you still don't find it, you may not have all the wizards installed.
There's an rpm caller drakwiz (or is it wiz-drak?) that installs quite a few

And btw, to run XFdrake you need to be in a root console.

It's XFdrake (mind the capitals) .enter XFd on the commandline (as

XFdrake is a wizard for configuring X and the desktop BTW.You don't need

Well people can call me chicken but I never, NEVER upgrade a KDE that's
running on my install.I prefer waiting for the next general distrib
upgrade (which is never very far away in mdk's case).

There were times you could install new kde-upgrades in /opt/ which sorted out
most problems, but sadly they're not of late any more.

And FWIW: I've got kmail/kontact1.7.2 running on kde 3.3.2 with mdk10.2rc3
quite stable and satisfactorybut don't ask me what's the diff: I don't
see very much there. Hopefully it's all stability in that respect.

This machine (my work-horse:triade1) runs kmail1.7.1 on kde3.2.3 with mdk10.1,
but admittedly I don't use imap, only pop-servers.

It won't hurt upgrading to 10.2rc3 IMO. It's about as stable as 10.1
official'll ever be...give it a go but don't upgrade, do a fresh install
retaining your /home(you'll lose win4lin again, though)

Re: [newbie] Kde desktop disappeared

2005-03-15 Thread Fernando Arturo Gómez Flores
Hello all. Just a few thoughts.

I bought my Mandrake copy directly from France. No downloads, no screwed
CDs, everything should have been perfect.

However, while the installation was OK (not a single error), when I started
the system up, when loading the Mandrake GUI selector (I actually don't know
its name, hope I made myself clear: that is, where you should enter the
username and password) the system didn't react. It wasn't frozen because
when I entered Ctl+Alt+Backspace, the X system stopped alright.

In the first place, I though it had something to do with my hardware.
However, when I started up the system WITHOUT authomatic X window startup
(that is, only the terminal), and when I write (after the login)
# startx
the X Window (with KDE) started without problems. Hence, I suspected that
the problem was indeed the GUI Selector. Then, in the configuration panel, I
changed the default manager from Mandrake's own to KDE's or GNOME and now
everything works fine.

Maybe you can try something like these, although I don't know how to do it
from command line.

Greetings,
Fernando Gómez.

[newbie] Kde desktop disappeared

2005-03-14 Thread Michel Leunen
Some weeks ago, I lost Konqueror and had to reinstall the whole KDE.
Now, it's the KDE desktop which disappeared suddenly when trying to log
in. The desktop just doesn't show up. No taskbar, no panel, no desktop
and no icons and I have to leave using 'ctrl+alt+backspace' to log with
another window manager.
How can I get KDE back? And, please, don't tell me I have to reinstall

The first thing I'd do is create another user and log into KDE as that new
user. If the problems don't show up it's a faulty setting in your
/home/michel/.kde/ directory.just delete it and check in as you used
to.

You will lose existing kde settings like those of kmail as well as bookmarks
in konqueror etc etc.
So if that is a major problem, say so and we'll fine tune what has to be
changed/deleted.

You didn't say if you had a command prompt or not. If you do have the

I did to get it back although I admit, I'm not sure.

It does seem rather difficult to do anything about kde if you can't even get
in. He should be able to try renaming .kde, but that would only work if the
problem was after logging in, and as I understand it he can't even get so
far. But - if he can't, how did he get XFCE working, I wonder?

Can you log into kde as a different user? Maybe create one and see. If so,
rename your /home/~/.kde to .OLDkde. Logout and then back into KDE. That
will probably fix it. Beware, you may want to backup your Mail directory and
your kaddressbook, because you may lose them in the process. Your desktop
settings will also return to the default. The bright side is, it is a
relatively quick fix.

Renaming is always a good option. You can copy your addressbook over to the
new directory. If you use kmail it isn't stored under .kde but under .Mail,
so you don't lose that either.

No prompt, I use mdkKDM to login. It's the Mandrake graphical login

the X server is launched. I can see the blue background image and the
splash screen but that's all. I forgot to say that there is no peculiar

Here's one possibility that I'd try. Try XFDrake, if you can get to a command

everything is still OK there you've ruled out one possibility.

Have the problems been sorted, and can we now upgrade KDE?

Many thanks for any information.

[newbie] KDE disaster

2005-01-18 Thread Russell Butler
Hi all
After my previous effort (see urpme logging 9 Jan) I have dug myself
into an ever deeper hole.

Being unable to work out what I needed, and having a set of MK 10.1
discs, I decided to upgrade from 10 to 10.1, including installing KDE 3.3.

Now I am unable to get beyond a grey screen (no icons or tray) in KDE,
but ICEWM will run - sort of. I can launch some programs from terminals
including Mozilla, but not firefox or thunderbird which give
Gdk-CRITICAL ***: gdk_window_set_title:assertion 'title !=NULL' failed.

I presume I have some aspects of Gdk missing, but much googling has
failed to show how to find/restore the missing bits.

Anyone able to point me in a somewhat helpful direction please?
Thanks for any help
Russell

Strange. I just upgraded 161 MB worth of KDE and xscreensaver
coming up today, but my k3b works OK. I noticed your command
: urpmi.update -a;urpmi --auto-select

^ a space is needed here
 urpmi.update -a; urpmi --auto-select

and this semicolon shouldn't be there. Instead it is :
urpmi.update -a urpmi --auto-select

The difference between using ';' or '' is that the double
ampersand says to the system, 'run this next command only if the
previous one is successful.' Use of ';' doesn't use this
precaution. Obviously '' should normally be preferred when the
subsequent command(s) relies on the prior one(s).

My suggestion : try again if your update is older than one
day. You might be able to get all the new stuff as of today.
HTH

Not sure, but it sounds like you tried to update with kde
running. I tried this once and ended up reinstalling from
scratch. Did the update one step at a time in the order
required for kde with xserver closed down and have had no
problems since. As I said - not sure if this is your problem or
not.

I run cooker. I update KDE almost daily, sometimes several
times a day. Always with KDE and X running. In the past I've
updated 'final' or 'community' or 'official' Mandrake versions,
always from within KDE. I have no idea who or when this
fallacious advice originated, ie, logout from KDE and/or X to
update. It simply isn't so.

This isn't Win$ux folks. What _is_ often needed is to update
the system after the updates are installed, eg, I use an alias
(as root), 'upall'
alias upall='rpm --rebuilddb updatedb ldconfig -v
update-menus -v -n'

Then log out and back into KDE to fully realize the updates.
It's a good idea to use Ctrl+Alt+BkSp while logged out to
restart the X server. Specially if updates were to X. If you're
setup to auto-login to KDE, this step will auto log you back into
KDE.

I do not doubt anything you have said here, and in fact I strive for the
day when this is works fully for a dumb arse like me. It is just that
when I update kde from rpm packages FULLY, I have yet to succeed with a
successful installation without first logging out of X session.

AGAIN. I do not doubt you, it may well be that within text console, I
have to be more observant and careful, therefore suceed this way. Time
will tell I hope because I am through with playing with Linux, I now
need to keep this box stable and in production for myself. Oh... I
forgot, what is Windows again??

No, it isn't too basic! Generally speaking, I think that an answer

people reading it are likely to understand it and get help from it.

Here's how I did it (then). I put in CD4 and cd'd to the
KDE3.3 directory. There I ran 'rpm -Fvh *.rpm' which returned
some missing dependencies. Mostly libjack* IIRC. I already had
online 10.1 sources set up, so I used those to get the deps. You
might be able to use your CD sources.

That upgraded KDE packages I already had from the many from
the 10.1 CD install. (which is what 'rpm -Fvh' does, see 'man
 rpm'). After the upgrade was finished, I ran 'upall' as root;
 [ alias upall='rpm --rebuilddb updatedb ldconfig -v
 update-menus -v -n' ]

Then logged out, back into KDE, using Ctrl+Alt+Bsp to re-start
the X server while I was logged out. If you are setup to auto
login to your desktop, this will bypass the login next step.

For my experience and opinion: _Don't do it_! If you really
want KDE3.3, setup cooker sources and use urpmi to update to KDE
 3.3.2, (complete cooker 10.2) You'll be better off. KDE3.3.1
shipped with 10.1 is alpha an buggy quality, IME. Cooker is
currently stable. Do it NOW while cooker is slow for the holidays

Thanks for your reply and the help. I appreciate it.

I now know two good ways of doing the upgrade, yours and Jo's.

Thanks also for the warning about the buggy quality of the packages on
the CD. I must think about what to do.

[newbie] KDE upgrade

urpmi. None work. :( I also can't get Install Packages to find the
new KDE on disk4. Tried all sorts of add media as well.

So, PLEASE someone, in plain language, how does one install KDE3.3
from disk4? I don't need to keep KDE3.2. I can't find the answer in
twiki or the archives.

Very many thanks for any help.

Re: [newbie] KDE upgrade

2005-01-01 Thread linuxgirlie
I installed KDE 3.3 bu doing the following:

Copy all the KDE files into /tmp
Login as root (for some reason there is a bug, may have been fixed
now) that won't allow you to add media under other users.
Go to Mdkc Control Centre (configure your computer) and add new
media...eg the folder with kde in it.
Once this is done go to install software
Type in KDE
Look for all the files with 3.3.* (* being your version)
Add them, with a tick

Click install.

Sorry if this is to basic, just trying to put it in some sort of
understandable order!!

(which is what 'rpm -Fvh' does, see 'man
rpm'). After the upgrade was finished, I ran 'upall' as root;

YMMV

Just to clarify, CD4 has extras like commercial programs and kde3.3, kde3.2 is
still available on the normal 3 cd download set, just choose to skip it for
now. Later, you can download kde3.3.1 from a public Club mirror (but not the
commercial stuff).

Nope, they send you a series of e-mails for about a month before you expire
encouraging you to renew. If you do nothing, then you switch to 'Alumni'
status, that is you stay a member, but loose any access to the new download
stuff.

I think the forth Cd (KDE cd) might only be for Mandrake Members even
though i see most Linux Re-sellers sell the forth cd as well.

You would have to hit cancel during the install when it asks you for the
4th Cd or in the beginning of the install select only that you have the
first 3 cds.

once you've got mandrake installed, then you can just add kde 3.3 using urpmi
Just skip it for now, and choose another window manager like gnome.

2004-11-01 Thread Adil Hindistan
Hi,

I know this Q was asked before but I could not really figure out what to
do. I had MDK 10.1 cooker and upgraded it to 10.1 official using urpmi.

I still have KDE 3.3 and not sure how to get it installed via urpmi. I
actually tried to download KDE konstruct, unzipped it, and tried make
install bu it stops at a different point every time I try...

Pls. advise. Thanks,

Hmmm... Not sure if you should remove those RPM's, as there are quite a few
dependancies for them. I will do a little checking, and see what else I can
find out, and will post back in a few (possibly with a better answer)...

Any updates on this problem?

From what I can gather from the osl2000 web site, XOSL is an entirely
different boot manager.

I haven't tried the osl2000 product, but based on the screenshots, I'd
still prefer XOSL.

I wasn't able to discover whether osl2000 fits inside the MBR, though I
am guessing that it does because it claims not to need a FAT or NTFS
partition to install into. Based on what I read, XOSL does a better job
of hiding partitions, and since it does not have to fit into the MBR,
offers the ability to have multiple backup copies of changed MBRs as
well as lots better graphical setup and configuration screens.

Take a look at XOSL and let me know what you think, you've got osl2000
experience and I don't.
