In genere ci sono due strade:

- furbetta (non sempre funziona): fai un link simbolico

- scarica i sorgenti in formato rpm e compilali con

[newbie-it] gaming on line

riesco...

Mistero.

Perchè con Mandrake sì e con Win2K no?

A voi la soluzione.

Un saluto.

I've checked LM Hardware database using my ISA modem and it

 LM8 or 8.1?
If not, could you recommend a good external modem?

Hello,

I made the mistake of purchasing a USB modem to use with my LM8.0
installation - it's an external modem, isn't it?.
Well, yes and no! I won't go into the details of what I eventually worked
out from reading forums and newsgroups, but basically some USB modems work,
and some don't.
So: buy a good old-fashioned serial port external modem. It will work
straight out of the box without any messing about with drivers.
I settled on a Elsa Microlink Fun, simply because a) it was cheap b) I liked
the colour c) I couldn't find any negative reviews with Google.

Have fun,

Re: [newbie] internet connection sharing

2002-01-16 Per discussione Brian Parish

Your ICS should still work with static addresses as long as they are in
the 255.255.255.0 subnet i.e. they are 192.168.0.x addresses. If you
look in the newbie archive I think you'll find a message to this effect
from civilme from late last year. Just set up ICS on your Mandrake box,
then ignore the DHCP function - think that's all that was required.

BTW though - DHCP is not incompatible with what you evidently want to
do. The windoze shares are all accessed by name, not by address. Stay
with static addresses by all means if it is more convenient, but it
shouldn't really make any diffierence unless you are not using the
default subnet for some reason.

[newbie] Web sharing does not survive a reboot

2002-01-16 Per discussione Pascal Goguey
Hello (again)!

I have built a new machine in order to use it as a small server
(about 10 machines for the time being).
I have an ADSL modem to which plug an LAN cable conneced
to the first ethernet interface (eth0). The other interface is for
the LAN (eth1).

Using the network setup tools, I have configured eth0 to
connect by DHCP to the modem, and eth1 with the address
192.168.0.1.

After that, I have configured the web sharing, and it works
without any problem. I can access the mail from other machines,
use internet browsers, ftp, etc...

The only problem is that I have to start the web sharing manually
everytime I boot. Is there a way to automate the startup so that
the server can work as a server simply by power on, and without
logging into it?

Thanks for any hint!

[newbie] printing from MacOS to a Linux server

2002-01-16 Per discussione Pascal Goguey
Hello (Last one for today)

I have installed a Linux server for about 10 clients.
There is a printer connected to it with the parallel
port (an inkjet printer).

I have installed appletalk (netatalk) which runs fine.
When I run nbplkup, 3 zones are shown. Don't ask me
why, but most of the machines here show 3 zones,
so I assume it's normal.

I still cannot see the printer from the client machine.

I found many pages explaining how to do for the server
side, but close to nothing about what I should do from the
client. Am I supposed to see the printer in the chooser
on MacOS9, or with the printer tool in MacOS X?

I forgot to mention that CUPS runs.

Can anybody figure out what I have missed?

Thanks,

Pascal

[newbie] TNT graphics card problem

2002-01-16 Per discussione Pascal Goguey
Hello!

I sent this mail yesterday but didn't get it back from the list,
so maybe it hasn't been sent properly. Sorry if you get it twice,
and sorry also for the two following messages!

I have a problem installing Mandrake on a new machine.
I bought a TNT2 board. I could use the installer so basically
it works in a low resolution / low color definition mode.
When the X server starts, or just before it starts, the text mode
screen flashes, The period of the flashes is about a second,
it lasts for about 1 minute, and after that it says something
like: respawning too fast. Stop for 5 minutes.
At that point, I can log in text mode and perform all operations
you can perform in text mode. 5 minutes later, it retries to launch
X, flashes again, and then stops for another 5 minutes.

I have tried to download the latest TNT driver. On the same
page, there is also a linux kernel that I have downloaded and
installed. The symptoms are exactly the same.

I am almost sure the problem is within the driver because:

1. The TNT board does not work on another Mandrake 8.1 machine
after replacing its card and drivers;
2. The TNT board works perfectly with BeOS in full color, 1280x1024.

Any hint to solve this problem?

Winex with Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction. Now, I can join any of the games
run by the Windoze boxes in our 3 comp Lan, but no one can join a game if I
host it. I poked around, found that some stuff had been dropped from
/etc/resolv.conf, and I re-added it. The last 2 lines here were gone.

 nameserver 192.168.0.1 darkforce
 nameserver 192.168.0.2 darkforce2
 nameserver 192.168.0.3 darkforce3

After adding these 2 lines back, then doing a ifconfig eth0 down, ifconfig
eth0 up, followed by mount -a, I was able to join games again. Still
 couldn't host one though.

Does anyone know what network related files the firewall changes? I'm sure
its just a small file somewhere, something like hosts allow or deny thats
stopping the Windog machines from being able to play via tcp/ip with mine.

 Thanks in advance! ;-)

Hello folks,
Well, I was more than disappointed to find that the WIN4LIN inclusion

Very poor PR on Mandrake's part to do that. It isn't an included

I need something to run FrontPage98 and Thumbsplus and with all the

I do have a copy of Wordperfect for Linux - any comments?

[newbie] Bastille firewall log

2002-01-16 Per discussione Jim Gentry

I am running Mandrake 8.1 and dual booting with WinME (temporarily, I
hope). I am on a cable modem and I run the Zone Alarm Pro firewall in
windows. ZA logs all attempts to access my machine in a text log.

I opted to install the Bastille firewall in Mandrake 8.1 and it works
very well as I have had GRC.com's Shields Up probe my machine and it
reports all ports in stealth. I have looked for a log from Bastille,
but I cannot find any mention of it in the docs so far.

Can anyone on this list point me in the right direction? Must logging
be enabled in the default install of Bastille? If so, how?

The X respawning thing is because there is something wrong with your video
setup. Not necessarily due to the wrong driver, more likely wrong resolution
etc.

When the respawning stops log in as root and type init 3
This will stop X trying to start again.
Then type XFdrake
(It takes a long time to load)
You will then be able to reconfigure your video settings.
Choose conservative ones you can always change it later.

To restart X type init 5
(you may also need startx)

John,

Based on what I have gleaned from installing Bastille firewalls, it
seems that if you have physical access to the console, you should be
able to get over the lack of a root password - at least if you haven't
taken very specific action to secure against this. Can I suggest you
pose this question specifically on the expert list? Having the root
password would certainly be a bit useful in these circumstances.

Mario Michael da Costa wrote:
Never saw my name on a website before, done my ego a whole lotta good,

You're welcome!

Were the sizes of the 2 iso images different ? because that is the
only thing that could the message digest. Before computing the MD5
digest, the message (iso image) is padded till it's length is 64 bits
less than a multiple of 512 bits. so if the 2 sizes were different, it
is possible that they would be padded differently. heck if they were
different, the MD5 digest would be different in any case.

Don't know about the sizes, and they are now deleted. If I get a chance
to experiment again, I'll check that. Thanks for the explanation on
padding -- I was afraid that different isos (from different software)
might be padded differently -- I'll add this to the webpage. (We may
still not be positive, but this sounds like a straightforward
algorithm.)

As part of my *research* on MD5, i downloaded the c source code of
md5. It compiles on linux quite easily. The code though was a bit too
geeky for me to comprehand, the algorithm is pretty simple. I can mail
you the c source code offlist, if you want to try and compile it on
 windblows.

Yeah, go ahead and mail me the code -- don't know when I'd have a chance
to look at it, or what I'll be able to pick up, but learning C and C++
is on my ToDo list.

Over the coming weekend i'll try experimenting on my own.

Great, send me any results you get, or add them to the Wikilearn

Thanks for the reply, Michael. Well, I kinda figured that...(not being
sarcastic here-the thought had occurred to me!), but I was hoping someone had
run into this problem before and could point me to a specific file. I did a
search of the Newbie mailing list archives, and found -tons- of info about
firewalls, but nothing related to this problem. I also tried the Mandrake
forums and .org...again, nothing related.

Well, methinks I'll re-run the firewall tool, and leave one section open at a
time, until it works again. That at least, should narrow it down to where.

Thanks again! ;-)

Re: [newbie] TNT graphics card problem

2002-01-16 Per discussione Onur Kucuk

PG Hello!

PG I sent this mail yesterday but didn't get it back from the list,
PG so maybe it hasn't been sent properly. Sorry if you get it twice,
PG and sorry also for the two following messages!

PG I have a problem installing Mandrake on a new machine.
PG I bought a TNT2 board. I could use the installer so basically
PG it works in a low resolution / low color definition mode.
PG When the X server starts, or just before it starts, the text mode
PG screen flashes, The period of the flashes is about a second,
PG it lasts for about 1 minute, and after that it says something
PG like: respawning too fast. Stop for 5 minutes.
PG At that point, I can log in text mode and perform all operations
PG you can perform in text mode. 5 minutes later, it retries to launch
PG X, flashes again, and then stops for another 5 minutes.

PG I have tried to download the latest TNT driver. On the same
PG page, there is also a linux kernel that I have downloaded and
PG installed. The symptoms are exactly the same.

PG I am almost sure the problem is within the driver because:

PG 1. The TNT board does not work on another Mandrake 8.1 machine
PG after replacing its card and drivers;
PG 2. The TNT board works perfectly with BeOS in full color, 1280x1024.

PG Any hint to solve this problem?

PG Thanks,

PG Pascal

Your card seems to be ok, just the drivers might be installed wrong.
Make sure you have installed the nvidia driver correctly on linux.

In the nvidia's official pages, there are 2 drivers, a glx rpm and a
kernel rpm (not kernel, but an addon for kernel). Make sure that you
install them both. Keep in mind that if you changed your kernel to
one other than the official mdk kernel, you must update your
 nvidia-kernel-driver.

For your question, if I remember right, try booting in console mode.
Like if you are using lilo to boot, try to boot with linux 3, and
then login, and type startx. This should do all the work about
respawning too fast) if the drivers are set up correct.

I advice you check madnrakeuser.org, mandrakeforum.com and the
archives of this list, this subject has been discussed many times.

I have recently just reinstalled my system.

Since the reinstall i have not been able to not been able to use my

not a valid block device.

The same happens if i use the mount command.

The cdrom device in /dev/ is a symbolic link to /dev/hdc which is what
the kde control centre reports my cdrom drive to be.

Can anyone help me here? i am positive it is not a faulty cdrom drive

Any help appreciated, it would be helpfull if you could respond to this

[newbie] More Wine or DOSEMU

2002-01-16 Per discussione Joe Wittmer

Hi Group,

Well... more wine is probably always a better choice...

I have a DOS communications application that does not work under Wine... I
am not really surprised that it does not start... But, if anyone has any
suggestions I am open to try something.

The other question is DOSEMU does not seem to work the way that it used to
when I worked with it before (2 years ago). The previous version seemed to
easily run the serial port application. This application handles some
hardware specific protocol. So, I'd really like to get it running until I
have something else working. I edited the config file, but it does not want
to talk out the port. I've thought maybe I should try and find an older
version of DOSEMU. Any suggestions?

I'll probaably want to run this app under a user instead of root... This
also seems it might be an issue when accessing the serial port... Anyone
doing this?

Thanks,
Joe

Go into the properties of the icon and make sure that it is pointing to the

similar problem, you will see these messages if you just look at the archives

Sure can, just be sure that your floppy is already mounted and choose to save
as doc_name in /mnt/floppy... or whatever represents this on your system.

GCONF = 1.0.7 is needed by libGConf1-1.0.7mdk
libConf1 = 1.0.4 is needed by GConf-1.0.4-2mdk

Install simultaneously to avoid circular dependencies, eg

[newbie] Firewall - Tcp/ip problem partially solved.

2002-01-16 Per discussione Ronald J. Hall

Just shoot me. One answer was right in front of me in the forums. The firewall
starts on bootup by default. No problem, first thing I usually do is hit the
'Net and check mail, so I'm protected. Logoff, and stop the firewall since I
don't need it now.

To stop the firewall, as root:

service bastille-firewall stop

Then, Diablo2: Lord of Destruction networking with WineX works fine.

If I need to log back on to the 'Net before I shutdown again, I just issue a:

service bastille-firewall start

and the firewall resumes. Of course, just looking at the Bastille config file
tells me there is a way to allow access from my Lan with the firewall up
(although I don't know exactly -what- to enter there) but this works for now
so...

Thanks to all who replied!

PS Its also kind of reassuring to know that the firewall is -blocking-. ;-)

RE: [newbie] X hangs with bpp=24

2002-01-16 Per discussione Yao, Jixian (CRD)

Nick and Charles,

Don't worry about it Nick. I am trying to set up pV3 which is a viz software for CFD,
and its server
requires 24-bit color depth. The card is decent card with 8MB ram, and at least it can
do that under
Windoze at 1024*768. The X server version is 4.1.0, and when I tried to set it up with
Mandrake
Control center (it's XFdrake acutally), I saw the limitation of the accel server, then
I picked the
plain X 4.1.0, and set the 24 for color depth. After it failed, I then tried to adjust
/etc/XF86Config manually, no luck so far. By the way, which config file XFree86 uses?
is it
/etc/XF86Config or XF86Config-4? Thanks,

Jixian

Anyone using Win4Lin or WINE out there able to tell me a little about
 their experiences?

I use it, I think very highly of it. It does all M$ networking
stuff, runs practically everything. (WP2002 is the only thing
that I know won't install) The only thing it can't do is play
games, but I boot to real Winsux for that (like there's any
other reason ;-)

I need something to run FrontPage98 and Thumbsplus and with all the
complaints out there still, probably Word as well. :-(

I used to run FP98, now I run FP2000. They both work
flawlessy. In the days when I was forced to use M$ Office
products, they ran perfectly as well. Well, let me rephrase:
they ran no worse than in a normal Winsux installation.

I do have a copy of Wordperfect for Linux - any comments?

Although it's rumored to have happened, I've never seen WP _ever_
run well, so you're asking the wrong guy.

I have M8.0 and was wondering if it was worth buying a std pak 8.1
and HOPING to get a bit further than with 8.0 . Still have no
sound, no CD, lousy onscreen fonts.

If you have the time, you could just download 8.1 for free. Then
if you like it, make a donation at their website. Or buy stock.

Hi folks -

I've just installed my first copy of Linux on to a Compaq laptop in a dual
boot configuration.

However, although it seems to boot OK , it then drops out to the black login
screen - not sure if that is what it's supposed to do or not.

I can then login as root or a user but when I type Startx or StartKDE it
says 'unable to open display' - canot connect to X server : $Display is not
set.

Is this something to do with not selecting the right monitor? I couldn't
find anything about laptop displays in the list.

Does anyone know which i should choose?

And how do i get back into the choosing monitor sequence ?

thanks,
Nick

RE: [newbie] Installing Samba 2.2.2 on Mdk 8.0

I think this would be the best way, to install it off a LM 8.1 CD because it
would have any dependencies taken care of. Do a 'rpm -Uvh --test
samba*.rpm' on the samba RPM first though, to see if you get any errors or
are missing any dependencies.

Look for Software Manager in your Configuration/Packaging. You should be
able to see a list of most if not all of the software packages (I do not
know about the extra software in power pack since I am using the
standard 3 CD download version). If there is nothing in the list, try
using Define sources and follow the instruction from there.

RE: [newbie] Terminal syntax??? to a floppy directly from wordstar?

2002-01-16 Per discussione Chad

I think you may have misunderstood the previous help. Let me try.

If you are in Star Writer and would like to save a file to a floppy disk:

1. Put the floppy in the drive.
2. Open a terminal window as you have done before when trying the previous
help.
3. Type 'mount /mnt/floppy' or if that doesn't work, try 'mount /dev/fd0
/mnt/floppy'.
4. You should see the floppy disk light come on momentarily.
5. If no error messages are recieved, then the mount was successful.
6. In Star Writer, go to the Save As function.
7. Choose '/mnt/floppy/' as the directory. This is just like selecting A:\
in Windoze.
8. Type in a file name and Save.

To open the file, perform steps 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 before starting or right
after starting StarWriter. Then just go to OPEN in Star Writerand do step 7
and then find the file.

I don't believe there is a direct way of getting a terminal from Star
Writer. Just use the one in your K or GNOME bar.

Hope that helps.

Chad

Re: [newbie] Terminal syntax??? to a floppy directly from wordsta r?

2002-01-16 Per discussione Derek Jennings

Sorry for coming in halfway through a thread, but it looks like everyone is
discussing a different subject :)
To save to a floppy from within an application then just select 'Save' and
save it as /mnt/floppy/filename

The floppy must be already inserted and mounted. You mount it either by right
clicking on the floppy icon on your desktop and selecting mount, or by typing
mount /mnt/floppy in a terminal window.

Do not forget to 'unmount' it before removing the floppy. Right click on the
floppy icon or else 'umount /mnt/floppy' in a terminal window.

The utility kwikdisk is handy for quick mounting/unmounting of removable
media. You will find it in KmenuConfigurationKardwareKwikdisk

set it to dock in your taskbar, and then when you leave KDE make sure the
save settings box is checked. Kwikdisk will then automatically load as an
icon in your task bar for ever more.

By the way: In Linux it is a good idea to avoid spaces in file names. Spaces
are allowed, but when you refer to the file in a terminal command you have to
'quote' the space by putting the whole file name in Quote marks.
For example if we want to list the contents of a text file in a terminal
window we can use the 'more' command, as in

more /mnt/floppy/Note to Luke.txt

or alternatively you could precede each space with a '\' as in

more /mnt/floppy/Note\ to\Luke.txt

If you do not do this the 'more' command will think it has to list the file
called '/mnt/floppy/Note' and has command options 'to' and 'Luke.txt'
specified.

As you can see its a lot less trouble to just not use spaces.

When saving or loading from your application you do not have to worry about
spaces, so for example StarWrite is quite happy to load or save
/mnt/floppy/Note to Luke.txt

Hope I have not confused you even more than you were already.
It is a steep learning curve at first, but once you get it you will find it
real easy.

derek

Re: [newbie] Firewall/Tcp-ip problem...

2002-01-16 Per discussione Michael Viron

Typically the ipchains / iptables files are found in /etc/sysconfig/ .
Check there for a file listing the bastille rules.

If it's not there, it should be somewhere under /etc . I don't know
exactly, as I add firewall rules by hand.

Thanks again! ;-)

Re: [newbie] First install

2002-01-16 Per discussione Michael Viron

This means that the environment variable $DISPLAY isn't set, try 'export
DISPLAY=:0' and see if that helps.

Also, going to a text login screen is what it does by default. To get it
to boot into a GUI based login, you have to edit /etc/inittab and change
the line:
'id:3:initdefault:' to 'id:5:initdefault:'.

(note the 5 in the second one, instead of 3)

you may also need to add yourself to the floppy group (if you aren't

Well at a guess it might be something to do with that onboard video chip

I use WP8 for Linux and it works perfectly--reads .doc files, no problem (why
does word use .doc by default when rtf is just as good and retains all the
Word format?). There is some setup stuff you should know about, and you may
need the wp8filtrix patch, if you have the downloaded version of WP8. There
is a pretty good thread with the gotchas (minor, you need to install
ld.so-1.9.11-4mdk.i586 (its on the 7.2 disk 1, if you have it), and libc5 on
the mdk second disk (of 8.0 I think, probably on 8.1, too).

I have M8.0 and was wondering if it was worth buying a std pak 8.1
and HOPING to get a bit further than with 8.0 . Still have no
sound, no CD, lousy onscreen fonts.

Control PanelLookNFeelFonts and choose lucidatypewriter for Fixed
Width--helvetica for all others.

Did you run sndconfig from init3? Is your soundcard supported?

If you have no CD, how did you install? Or do you mean a CDwriter isn't
showing up? Lots of stuff on that!

I am going to have to do a complete re-install anyway as I've lost
 the SU/root password.. :-(

Actually, losing a password isn't the end of the world. I once did this
myself, and it's fairly simple.

reboot and type

linux init=/bin/sh rw

at the LILO prompt. This will boot into the non-protected root shell. GRUB
requires you to hit the 'e' key twice and add

init=/bin/sh rw to the boot command, the ENTER then 'b' to boot

when the sytem is up type

vi /etc/passwd

The entry for root will look like this

root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

If that is what you have hit ESC and then :wq! to exit vi. If not, change
it to look like that

Check permissions with ls -l /etc/passwd they should be-rw-r--r--.

Runvi /etc/shadow

The format will be

[accountname]:[password]:[other stuff] e.g.

root:$1$KODLG[etc]:10979:0:9:7:::

DELETE the password entry for root by moving the cursor to the first
character of the password (usually $) and typing dw Now type wq!
 which will save the file.

Now Run

sync mount -o remount,ro /

which will write all buffer content to the disk and remount the partition
read-only. Press CNTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot.

On the next login, type root for the account name and just hit the
ENTER at the 'password' prompt. Type password to give 'root' a
password.

That's worked for me!

e.

First, thanks to Dave, Ed, Noah, and Michael for advice on domain hosting. RR

Now I'm running into trouble starting proftpd. I get the error:

Fatal: unable to determine IP address of 'SLATER.columbus.rr.com'.

Looking at the faqs at proftpd.org, I see:

The hosting machine has a poorly configured hostname setup to the point where
the resolver library cannot determine the IP from the name. Solutions
include, fixing the DNS for the domain, fixing the hostname, fixing the
/etc/hosts file. Which one works for you will largely depend on your OS and
exactly what is wrong.

Am I required to have a static ip to start this? Is there some other process
I should be running? I'm not sure what I would put in the /etc/hosts file, or
how to fix the dns.

It sounds like your sound card and printer are both using irq 7. I had this

Of course, you will need to check /proc/interrupts to make sure irq 9 is

init=/bin/sh rw to the boot command, the ENTER then 'b' to boot

when the sytem is up type

 vi /etc/passwd

The entry for root will look like this

 root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

If that is what you have hit ESC and then :wq! to exit vi. If not, change
 it to look like that

Check permissions with ls -l /etc/passwd they should be-rw-r--r--.

 Runvi /etc/shadow

 The format will be

 [accountname]:[password]:[other stuff] e.g.

 root:$1$KODLG[etc]:10979:0:9:7:::

Type password to give 'root' a
 password.

 That's worked for me!

 e.

This is truly fascinating. But if you don't use vi it is
hard to understand. Just confirm for me that dw is delete
word and will stop the delete at the first colon. wq! is
write and quit?
