[newbie-it] usare mkisofs

2003-07-28 Per discussione Antonluigi
ciao a tutti,

ho un problema con mkisofs che non sono ancora
riuscito a risolvere.

Devo rimasterizzare un'immagine della knoppixmame,
dopo averci aggiunto le rom.

Quando cerco di usare mkisofs per ricreare l'iso
ricevo un messaggio del tipo:

Uh oh I dont find the boot.cat file in .../path

Ho cercato un po' su internet e ho letto la pagina di
man (lunghetta) e sembra che mkisofs cerchi questi
file in un percorso ben preciso che non so qual'è.

Ho provato anche a specificare in maniera precisa il
percorso ma il risultato non cambia.

Sapete darmi qualche suggerimento o sapete dove trovo
un documento che parla in maniera potabile
dell'argomento?

Grazie

Antonluigi

ciao,
ho lo schermo nuovo, di solito in Windows si modifica il refresh sugli 80Hz per

In Debian editavo un file della configurazione di X server modificando il refresh

Devo fare la stessa cosa o c'#232; un utility?

The recommended way to use another window manager in GNOME is to use the
WINDOW_MANAGER shell variable. If you use bash, add the line

   export WINDOW_MANAGER=sawfish

to your ~/.bashrc file. Then run

   source ~/.bashrc

I use tcsh, but same difference. Tried setenv WINDOW_MANAGER sawfish in .login
and restarted. Came up in sawfish as before. xterm - printenv WINDOW_MANAGER
came up blank. Same rigmarole using the logout button after creating the panel
and no way of saving the session.
So, it looks like I am stuck with my Mandrake 8.2/Gnome 1.4 combination for the
duration. Mandrake 9/Sawfish is unusable at present.

Another question: is there a sawfish configuration tool somewhere, like
  under GNOME 1.4?

Run sawfish-ui (it should be in /usr/bin/ or /usr/X11R6/bin/).
Thanks. Found that in the latter.

Kernels are *never* updated automatically with other packages.
This is because in the days of 8.1 kernels were installed automatically, and
lots of users ended up with unbootable computers after running Mandrake
Update.

To install your new kernel enter 'kernel' in the search box of your Mandrake
Software Manager the new kernel will be visible there (so long as you have
run Mandrake Update recently ) Select it, and it will install.

After installing a new kernel check the symlinks in /boot are OK, and the new
stanza in /etc/lilo.conf is OK before you try booting the new kernel.

 Avi

Because kernels must not be *upgraded*. They must be *installed*.
If you try to upgrade a kernel, it will destroy your system.
That's why Mandrake removed the opportunity to *upgrade* kernels
via the Control Center.

If you want the new kernel, do as follows :

Download the kernel-whatsoever.rpm to some directory of your
choice, for example /home/avi/downloads. Change into that
directory, su into root and then run :

urpmi kernel-*whatever*.rpm

This will install the new kernel. That done, edit your
/etc/lilo.conf to make the new kernel the default one.
You can do that from the Command Center under the Boot-option or
simply edit it by hand. Remember to run *lilo* (as root) when
you have saved the new /etc/lilo.conf.

Finally, re-boot and if everything is OK you can simly remove the
old kernel entries in /boot, although that's not necessary.

[newbie] DVD writing software

2003-07-28 Per discussione Geert Stichelmans
Hi everyone,

For six months now, I'm 100% M$-free on my home machine, and would like
to stay that way.
Now, I just bought a Sony DVD RW-U10A, DVD+/-RW and installed it in
mandrake 9.1.
Reading CDROM, writing CD-R, CD-RW (using k3b), playing video DVD's
(using mplayer)..., all works perfect.

But now I wanna try to copy a DVD. Is there DVD-copy software available
for linux?
Anyone has experience with copying DVD's under linux?
What I'm really looking for is an easy way (gui or command line) to
create an image of a dvd-disc, put it on my harddisk, and burn it on a
DVD+R or DVD-R.

Thanks,

Geert.

[newbie] gtk-gnutella

Hi all,

What's the story on gtk-gnutella? I just downloaded it from Texstar and
it seems to function quite well out of the box. I didn't download
anything yet though. A bit scared form the stories about Kazaa...

Are there anything i really should pay attention to when i start using
it?

[newbie] update packages

2003-07-28 Per discussione Marco Verheul
Hi,

I downloaded the latest Evolution form Tekstar and i want to update my
current version withthe new rpm. It's in my download directory that is
known as one of the sources in the Software Sources Manager (Mandrake
Control Center).

When I choose to update software it seems that only available updates
from a mirror site are shown, not the sources on my own machine.

How can i update using my downloaded rpm's?

Title: RE: [newbie] update packages

I use a directory 'in/RPM' in my home directory to store incomming RPMs.
I've added a source in 'Software Sources Manager':
 Type of sourece: Local
 Path: /home/msabin/in/RPM

Then when I run 'Install Software' I choose to see packages by repository and there are my uninstalled downloads waiting to go.

Is there a more elegant way? I came up with this scheme while in a hurry, and never bothered to work out another method.

[newbie] best way of updating software

2003-07-28 Per discussione charo
this is a long history that I will try to make shorter, but please don't
piss me off. Linux is though enough for a brand new linux user like me.

Following someone suggestions from de list I added a cron.daily file
urpmi.cron, with the content that follows:

#!/bin/sh
urpmi.update -a
urpmi --auto-select --auto --no-verify-rpms
I thought I was really smart having this feature in my box when someone
in the list wasn't sure that updating from cooker was a good idea.
Literally to me cooker was a cooking pot, so I didn't even realize what
I was going into. OK, after that I was still having the PGP signature
problems and I used another tip from this list (Subject: Bad
signatures) and I follow that reference:
http://www.pclinuxonline.com/gpgkey.html

The problem is that I'm still having troubles with bad signatures. My
questions, I guess, are:
	1) Is it safe to do that urpmi.cron in a box for real work, not for
testing? Am I really using cooker in that file?
	2) Could anybody give me 2 lines info about cooker and how to stay away
from it when updating packages?
	3) Are you sure this list is for brand new linux newbiers? I read
almost all messages and I feel I'm getting so much partial info that I
can see the big picture.

Any advice will be apreciated.
Rosario

John, if you know where the file pubring.gpg is, then navigate to that file in
konqueror and check the file permissions and also look at the size. If it is
0 bytes then a fresh d/l is called for.
Here is what I got:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] Documents]# gpg --import pubring.gpg
gpg: key 9B4A4024: MandrakeSoft (MandrakeSoft official keys)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] not changed
gpg: key 22458A98: Linux Mandrake Security Team
[EMAIL PROTECTED] not changed
gpg: key 70771FF3: Mandrake Linux [EMAIL PROTECTED] not changed
gpg: key 8765ACFD: public key texstar [EMAIL PROTECTED] imported
gpg: Total number processed: 4
gpg: imported: 1
gpg: unchanged: 3

So the last thing is make sure you are in the folder that the pubring.gpg got
downloaded into, cause it looks like you are in root folder and not in your
user folder where the download probably put it. HTH

It's not that obvious how your supposed to do that in MCC.

Yes you can, that is a perfectly acceptable way of doing it. You can download
a whole bunch of files into a directory, and then to install them do urpmi
*.rpm and that will install all of them or list dependencies that you don't

The default samba configuration will do as you want 'out of the box'. All you
need change is the workgroup name in your /etc/samba.smb.conf file.

If you prefer using a GUI install the drakwizard RPM and then your Mandrake
Control Centre will have a new entry for a Samba server wizard which will
make the edit for you.

I thought I was really smart having this feature in my box when someone
in the list wasn't sure that updating from cooker was a good idea.
Literally to me cooker was a cooking pot, so I didn't even realize what
I was going into. OK, after that I was still having the PGP signature

 http://www.pclinuxonline.com/gpgkey.html

The problem is that I'm still having troubles with bad signatures. My

   1) Is it safe to do that urpmi.cron in a box for real work, not for

   3) Are you sure this list is for brand new linux newbiers? I read
almost all messages and I feel I'm getting so much partial info that I

 Any advice will be apreciated.
 Rosario

The best way to avoid cooker is to not have cooker defined as a urpmi source.
Your software source manager in Mandrake Control Centre will show you a list
of defined sources.

May I suggest one change to your script.
You currently have 'urpmi --auto-select --auto --no-verify-rpms' which is
going to automatically install the latest version of any package available on
any of the sources.
Some of the online sources such as Texstar contain the very latest bleeding
edge versions of packages. Occasionally these are 'broken'. So you could wake
up one day to discover something important no longer works.
I prefer to use
urpmi --auto-select --auto --no-verify-rpms --update
This will only automatically update packages from sources tagged as 'update
media' when you added them. So any official Mandrake update will take place
automatically, while new Texstar and PLF packages can wait until I am ready
for them.

[newbie] Apache 2, virtual hosts and SSL

2003-07-28 Per discussione Stefano Pogliani
I am running MDK 9.1 with Apache 2.

I have multiple Virtual hosts, all described in the vhosts/Vhosts.conf file.

Unfortunately, SSL only works with https://localhost/ . None of the
other alias (https://mymachine.madomain.net/ ,
https://myvirtual.host.org/ , https://othervirtual.host.org) work with SSL.

Certainly there is something I am missing.

Using Webmin, I discovered that there is the ssl directory where the
_default_:443 virtual host is defined.

What do I have to do in order to set any other of my Virtual Hosts to
accept SSL connection ?

Thanks a lot.

You will not have the cooker source in your list unless you have put

should be fine.

 3) Yes this list is for newbies. You just have to hang in there

asking questions. Read the Man files and google and ask here. If
you are new to linux and or unix it will seem very cryptic for a

 newbie questions. HTH

When I started reading it was clear to me that some were light years

reading and it will gradually start to make sense. Nobody minds how
often you come back for clarification, just make your questions clear

Thank you everyone for your help regarding the update of the kernel.
It does make sense that the kernel should not be updated but rather be
installed as a new package.
What made me assume that the new kernel should show up as an update is
the following sentence from the advisory
(http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/advisories/advisory.php?name=MDKSA-
2003:066-2):

To upgrade automatically, use MandrakeUpdate.

which is apparently wrong.

as a security fix. Why doesn't it tell me there is an update?

In general you just download 'em and they install themselves.
Be aware of the releases and screen settings. I.e. If you've got 1.3 usually

Generally, DO NOT log in as root.
For admin tasks, go to a root terminal.
When you run Mandrake Control Center or other GUI admin type functions you
will be prompted for root password.

With all due respect, but what does that have to do with
Mandrake Linux?
 This is a linux list.

1. With all due respect, looking at the subject line I posted

this list and earlier posted to OT list when i realized my error.
2. Obviously you are new to this list so I'll explain:
The Linux list sometimes delves into all kinds of off-topic

we try to take the long-winded talks private or to the OT list.

For those who have not done the kernel upgrade and have a Nvidia video card
you will probably need to do the install of the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run
package. The way I did it was to start the system with the new kernel, it
would not give me an xserver, naturally, so I logged in as my user and the
did su and the root password. Then changed directories to where the .run file
was and typed the sh NVIDIA-Linux* command. It started the run and
indicated that the package was not compiled for my kernel, did I want the
installer to compile Nvidia for my kernel? I chose OK and so it did.
Rebooted when done and my xserver was back on line. Nice feature Nvidia threw
in there and I didn't know it could do that.
Just a heads up for the Nvidia card crowd. HTH

Hello,

You might want to look at the Linux+Win9x+Grub HOWTO. I have been trying
to use a CD that seems to offer the promise of installing Window$ NT (mostly
to see if it would work). Since I already have ML9.1 installed and don't
really want to mess it up, I decided to carve out a third primary partition
at the end of my hard disk, and see what could be done. The HOWTO purports
to teach one how to install the Win OS on something other that the beginning
of the hard drive, but make GRUB fool it into thinking that it is [with lines
such as map (hd0,2) (hd0,0). The CD that I have used to install NT writes
a bunch of files to disk, then instructs you to reboot, at which point the
installation is supposed to continue, but I can't seem to get beyond this
point (any suggestions or explanations would be welcome). At any rate, I
don't lay claim to any kind of expertise (I don't even know what BR means),
but this how to, and the grub info page (especially the 'map' commands). The
grub info also says, however, that some OAS might use special drivers that
would make this mapping irrelevant. Smells like Win to me :^( )

In the hope that this isn't wholly irrelevant,
Jim.

I have also run XP in

Is it safe to reinstall 98 and XP? I was always told it would
reformat your entire drive (wether you wanted it to or not).

XP seems to understand partitions. 98 likes to take the whole drive..
I've had some luck doing a repair... not much... but some, with 98.

Geert Stichelmans [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Hi everyone,

For six months now, I'm 100% M$-free on my home machine, and would like
 to stay that way.
Now, I just bought a Sony DVD RW-U10A, DVD+/-RW and installed it in
 mandrake 9.1.
Reading CDROM, writing CD-R, CD-RW (using k3b), playing video DVD's
 (using mplayer)..., all works perfect.

But now I wanna try to copy a DVD. Is there DVD-copy software available
 for linux?
Anyone has experience with copying DVD's under linux?

Although I have never actually burnt a DVD in my life I do know a couple of
things. Firstly, cdrecord can burn DVD's, thus can most GUI's that are still in
development. But, and please note this: your DVD writer cannot burn 1:1 coppies
of most film DVD's you buy from the shop. The reason for this is simple. DVD's
sold with films have a capacity of well over 6 Gigs, and mostly they are filled
over the 6 Gigs, not because the extras are neccissary, or even because the
client is king and wants to see it, but purely because the DVD's you can buy
(blank) and burn are limited to I believe 4.3 Gigs. So, to put it simple, you
can buy 1.4MB floppes with software, but if you want blank ones, you can only
write onto 712KB floppies ;-)

What I'm trying to say here is commercial DVD's are specificly produced over the
limit of blank DVD's to prevent coppying. The encryption technique has been
broken / hacked, and they did know this was bound to happen. If someone makes
it, someone will break it. But it's impossible to fit 6 gigs onto 4, that's a
fact, unless you start editing the origional DVD cutting out extras, remaking
the toc and menu system if wanted to run in a commercial DVD player. It is
possible, no doubt about that, but it's not easy from what I know. Actually, I
read an interesting article about someone who actually took the time and effort
to try this, and wrote a detailed description of everything they encountered
along the way. He concluded that for single copy of a DVD, he would far rather
just buy the origional. It was woth the money (just), but definitely not the
full day he was busy with it. Actually in this specific case, he was cheaper
buying the origional, as he messed up 2 blanks while trying to get it right.

So why are there illegal DVD's around, which have been coppied? Well, because
someone takes the time to carefully do all this shit, but not for one copy, but
for hundreds. Then, and only really then does it become worth-while.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is that, if you bought this DVD writer for
the sole purpose of coppying easily DVD's, you were far mislead, as many are.
DVD's seem only handy for backups really. This would be for me the only reason
why I would ever maybe buy one at it's current restriction.

What I'm really looking for is an easy way (gui or command line) to
create an image of a dvd-disc, put it on my harddisk, and burn it on a
 DVD+R or DVD-R.

Explained above ;-)

I hope this may clear up some facts here. Although you probably should not quote
me exactly, what I have written here is fact to a point. Just check yourself.
The DVD's you have (blanks) are 4.x Gigs, right. Mount a DVD, and do `df -h` ...
unless it's either a documentary where they weren't bothered, or a b-rated film,
chances are it's above 6 Gigs.

Greetings
Ralph

Very interesting, Ralph. I haven't bought a writer yet, but would
like to at some point. What I would really like to do, though, is to
transfer from tape some of the footage that is most unlikely to ever
make it to dvd. Some are old- or tv-produced films, many are
documentaries. I would say the longest would be 90 minutes, with
most around 1 hour. Would they fit on current blanks?

And hypothetically, we are told that new technology will enable us to
fit several times more on disks that are just around the corner.
Does that mean that we are going to be forced to pay for many, many
hours of unwanted rubbish stuck on the end every time we buy a film,
just to make them bigger than the new standard? It doesn't bear
thinking about. It's bad enough now, only being able to buy some
films in the 'special' editions, with heaven knows what stuck on the
end - which I've never watched.

Looks as though I misled you. I can't find it in the current Moz, so
perhaps it was a Netscape thing. What I'm using is the 'allow
pop-ups' with exceptions, which can be set on a site by site basis.
Alternatively you could deny with exceptions. This is found either

The Linux list sometimes delves into all kinds of off-topic discussions,

  but

we try to take the long-winded talks private or to the OT list

Are you kidding? You dont think your original post was not a long-winded
diatribe about certain vegtables you appear to have problems with?

I'm just saying you should take that stuff to the tomatoe list and free

 this

  list for Linux. :)

to this list and earlier posted to OT list when i realized my error. 2.
Obviously you are new to this list so I'll explain:
