Re: [newbie] Great MP3player

2000-07-18 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

Actually XMMS does play CD's. Just put in the CD and then go to /mnt/cdrom.
You'll find all the tracks there ready to play.

I use XMMS (included on the 7.1 cd) for MP3's. It is the next generation
X-amp (yes, there is something like winamp out there too). It uses the
same skins and such, and is great.
It does not do CD's though.

[newbie] Multiple Idenities Email

2000-07-16 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

Is there an email client and/or work around to kmail's lack of multiple
idenities? The client would have to be GUI based. Right now the only workaround
I see is to create some more users and have their only purpose being to collect
mail for me. That or change my idenity in the settings whenever I send out an
email. So is there an email client (other than Netscape) that'll let me do
this? Or am I going to have to wait till the next major release of Kmail comes
out (which will support multiple idenities)?

Re: [newbie] Linksys LNE100TX Nic under Mandrake 7.1

All I can say is that I have that card and it works just fine for me. No
configuration needed or anything.

I have a dual boot system running Win98 and Linux. Recently, I
upgraded my network card to a Linksys LNE100TX(ver. 4) and then upgraded
from SuSE Linux 6.4 to Mandrake 7.1.

Neither version of Linux will install my network card. Checking PCI
devices shows an Ethernet card present but the vendor is unknown. I've
tried all the tricks: compiling the latest tulip driver (I get a ton of
errors), changing network settings, changing BIOS settings, etc. No luck.

Has anyone had any luck with this card? I have scanned all the support
pages and news groups I can find, but to no avail. They all mention
compiling the driver, but I can't seem to make that work. Any help I can
 get would be greatly appreciated.

 Thank you,

You might need to install the kernel sources. You can find them on the
installation CD in .rpm format. You do have the right directory however.

In which directory is the Linux kernel compiled? I am tryin to give the

but it gave me an error:

 no target to make menuconfig.

I assume that I'm in the wrong directory. Would appreciate your help.

See if this works. Close all those apps and then log out. When you log out,
make sure you check the "Save Current Setup" button in the dialog box that
comes up asking you for logout conformation. That *should* do the trick.

I'm running Gnome w/Enlightment as my window manager, and the first time i
loaded enlightment, i opened up some e-applets. Now it seems, everytime i
login, it spawns 5 copies of like 6 different e-applets I have to kill

and there was nothing listed. What loads all the e-applets?!?!?

It's the Linux registry. Since you can get Linux very easily without being
tracked, some guys setup a registration service to more accuratly count how
many people use Linux. Unfortunatly most people don't know about it, so the
amount of officially registered users are small. But he also calculates teh
estimated amounts using guesswork, which produces much more hopeful numbers.

Anyway, the URL for all this is http://counter.li.org

You just need to mount the harddrive under Linux. Type "mount -t vfat /dev/hda3

/mnt/disk.

I do not know how to get the files I downloaded (to my E:\linux folder to

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.1 Installao?

2000-06-29 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

I have been lurking and have noticed that many people have had trouble with
installing V7.1. I am not talking about burning CDs, etc, but rather with
the actual installation. I just ordered 7.1 and the CDs should be here
shortly. Question is, is it okay. Seems like some have been having trouble
with either X config, or not picking up something, or mouse problems, etc.

People will always have problems installing a distro. I've been lucky, I've
never had a major unfixable problem during the install. But I'm helping a
friend of mine trying to install 6.1 and he's having all sorts of trouble. It
just varies by the machine.

Also, there was talk of problems with freeX86 V4, versus the established
 version.

The first time I tried it, it worked fine except for the mouse wheel. I
eventually found out how to get the mouse wheel to work, but by that time I was
stuck in 3.3.6. And then when I finally figured out how to get back to X 4.0,
the resolution was all screwed up and none of the X tools seemed to affect 4.0.
The second time I installed, 4.0 came up with too high a resolution again, and
now I couldn't get back to 3.3.6. So finally I just said screw it and went with
3.3.6. Basically, if your card is supported under 3.3.6, then go with 3.3.6.

Should I install it over 7.0 (which is very well setup for me
presently), or just do a fresh install?

Apparently there has been problems with installs taking forever (12 hours +) if
you decide to upgrade. So I'd suggest a fresh install.

Any thoughts from those who have
 installed it?

 Thanks,

I have SCSI working fine on my Adaptec 7890. Detected my devices and I can use

Seems like a big problem with how popular SCSI is with old time UNIX
people. This was not a problem with Mandrake 6.0, 6.5 or 7.0. I always down
load a iso file and burn my own CD prior to purchasing a full copy. I won't
be buying if it won't work on my system(s).
I would think someone needs to get this fixed.
I reported this as a bug but still don't see it show up on any of the bug
lists. Does anyone know when/if a reported bug will show up? I don't see vary
many bugs showing up on ver.7.1 yet but I don't know how long it really takes
 for them to show.

[newbie] mkinitrd

2000-06-27 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

I'm trying to upgrade my kernel through rpm's (since compiling from source
hasn't worked) and so I'm following the guide from Mandrakeuser.org
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/install/kupgrade2.html

Anyways, I come to the part where it says to make a new initrd image, but when
I type in the command it lists (mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.2.16-9mdk 2.2.16-9mdk) I get
this error:

mke2fs 1.18, 11-Nov-1999 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
mount: Could not find any loop device, and, according to /proc/devices,
this kernel does not know about the loop device.
(If so, then recompile or `insmod loop.o'.)
Can't get a loopback device

It's not critical that I need SCSI support, but one of my harddrives (non Linux
HD) is SCSI, and so is my CD-burner. This has happened on all my previous
attempts with compiling kernels, but I had always figured I screwed up
somewhere and that's why it gave me the error. But even now with rpm's I get
it. So how do I get mkinitrd to work for me?

The only way I know how to get totally out of X is to never start it. At the

also wish there was an easier way to totally kill X.

The easiest way is to press "Ctrl+Alt+Fx" where x is 1-6.
The Mandrake doesn't have the option to run in console mode when you wish it
by pressing SHUTDOWN from the login, whereas other (Caldera for example) do.
I don't know if there is a way to enable this option somehow.
If anyone knows, please post it out...

[newbie] Huge Terminal Size

I'm having the wierdest problem. I was running Linux today like I normally do,
and then all of the sudden when I'd open up a gnome-terminal, the size of the
window was huge, as was the text. Normally, when I open one up, it takes up
maybe 1/12 of the size of the screen. But now it fills about half the screen.
The text is also about 3 times as big. This just happened, I didn't change
anything or nothing like that. Just all of the sudden, I opened up a terminal
and it was "big sized". I just rebooted to see if that might fix it, and it's
still just as big. Does anyone know what happened or how I can get it back to a
normal size?

Re: [newbie] Xfree 4.0

2000-06-20 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

Yep, I had the same problem. But over the course of 2 weeks I've figured out
how to fix it.

Go to /etc/X11/. In there, there will be a "file" named "X"
which is actually just a link to the 3.3.6 X server. So remove that symlink
("rm X") and then create a new X symlink, except that this one will point to
the 4.0 xserver ("ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 X") Now restart X, and you
*should* be back in X4.0.

And on to that topic, what do you use to configure X 4.0? None of the
configuration tools seem to work for X 4.0, and only end up making you go back
to 3.3.6.

 One simple question...

I installed MKD 7.1 with XFree 4.0, and when I loaded XFDrake con configure
it, it installed version 3.3.16 and I cannot go back to 4.0...

Did ne1 had the same problem??

properties or something like that) and make sure it's executing Linuxconf. Also
you might want to try running as root when you click on it.

Greetings, group...I have a question about the recent install that I
 completed...
 My PC is a TP600, 300MHz, 96MB, 6.4GB, xircom cardbus (tulip_cb)
100+56k, and Linux Mandrake 7.02. Running pretty well, except the icon
for the Linuxconf on the desktop is dead...Can't excecute it, nor does
it show a process running when I attempt to run it (by clicking on it or
executing it by command). I looked in the RPM list and it is loaded. I
unloaded it and reloaded it with the CDROM, no change. I even tried
upgrading (and restarting) from the web.

I have access to the text version, and I am pretty comfortable with it,
but I really like the graphical one.

If anyone has a suggestion (other than be happy that it works!! ;) ),
 please let me know.

Thanks in advance for your time and consideration,

Re: [newbie] ReiserFS? how?

One drawback to it is that there aren't any tools for Windows to access
it. I used to use Ghost 6.0 to backup my Linux partitions and
unfortunately it doesn't see the reiserFS. Explore-ext2 doesn't work
 either, obviously.

You mean you can view ext2 partitions from Windows using those programs? I had
always head it was impossible. Where can I download them at?

Re: [newbie] Installing themes

2000-06-14 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

I am still looking for answers in installing programs. When I install an
RMPS package the application does not appear on my KDE menu. Do I have to
manually install it and if so, how? Where does the program get installed? I
saw nothing that led me to believe I could control where it gets installed.

Programs don't always get put onto the KDE menu. Sometimes you're just going to
have to run it from the command line. Open up a terminal window (should be one
of the buttons down at the bottom taskbar) and then type in the program name
you want. For instance, if you installed xmms-1.0.1-10mdk.rpm, then you'd type
"xmms" (without the quotes) to run it.

Also I am still receiving the error "Can only start executables on local
disks." I am confused by this message as well.

Whend do you get the message? What are you trying to do?

When installing an
application in TAR or GZ format, what file do I typically look for to
install it? (ie, install.exe or setup.exe in Windows, What's the equivalent
 in Linux?)

Sadly, installing in Linux still isn't quite that easy in most situations. The
closest thing to a .exe is a .rpm. Read my explaination on .tar.gz's that I
wrote in another post for more information on how to install those things.

And lastly, I have several KDE themes I want to install in GZ
format. Where do I copy them in order for them to appear in my Themes
choices? Sorry if all this sounds to simple to ask about...

http://kde.themes.org/php/docs.phtml?docid=21secid=3.2 explains how to do it.

I am a Systems
Analyst in the MS Windows world, but am brand new to Linux, but I like
Linux better so far. Once I get past the learning curve I may use it
 exclusively...

Yep, the learning curve is steep, but it's well worth it.

Yep, for some reason Mandrake didn't include setup with 7.1. Fortunatly, you
can download it from here:
http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/redhat/6.2/i386/setuptool-1.2-5.i386.html

I just reinstalled MDK 7.0 after a HD failure, and was trying to use "setup"
from a command line to configure my Opti 82C929 sound card. I can't find
"setup", what is the RPM, or file name to install/use "setup".

Re: [newbie] Tar and .Gz

2000-06-13 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

Next, how do I install software from TAR or GZ format? I know how to
install packages, but I downloaded a file in GZ format and opened it with
the software that came with Mandrake, but I could not figure out what to do
next? I mean in Windows there is always a setup.exe, but what about Linux?
I know I can extract these files, but I did not know what to do after that.
I saw no executables or installation routines. (See I am a newbie!)
Example, I have this file: so51a_lnx_01.tar so how do I install it? Once I
install it, does it automatically appear on the menu for execution?

Compiling from source: Every newbies nightmare.
But here's how to make it better.

First untar the .tar.gz file by typing "tar -xvzf the_tarred_file.tar.gz". This
will create a new directory. Go into that new directory. Read the readme
file in that directory, it should contain further and more exact
instructions on how to install that particular program.

But 95% of the time, the instructions will be the same. In that directory, type
"./configure". This will check to make sure you have all the proper libraries
installed. If you get an error in this step, take note of what your missing and
look for it on rpmfind.net. Then install the missing file with "rpm -Uvh
the_missing_file.rpm" as root.

Once you get past the ./configure stage with no errors, type "make". This will
compile the source, and might take a little while. Once make is done, "su" to
root, and type "make install". Once it finishes that, the program is installed.
Just type "the_program_name" to run it.

Re: [newbie] overwrote LILO, can't access linux

Once you get your Linux file system up, as root, type "lilo".

Hello, I had to re-install windows this evening. I
had been using LILO to choose OS. Windows is on
primary master (hda), Linux is on primary slave (hdb).
LILO was set to use hda as the bootable partition.
Anyway, now I cannot reach linux with my boot disk and
partition magic doesn't see a bootable linux partition
either. I made the classic newbie move here.

I have full read write access to my linux file system
thanks to a rescue CDrom. I just need to know which
files to change so that I can get LILO going again.
Does anyone know what those would be? I'm at a loss.

I tried changing LILO.conf to point to hdb as the
bootable which didn't work. I also tried hdb1 which
is my /boot partition. No go. hdb5 is linux swap,
hdb6 is / and hdb7 is /home. It seems that the
windows installation proces overwrote the MBR of hdb
because partition magic reports a small extended dos
partition on that drive where there formerly were
 none.

Its 2:30 am and thats what I know. Thanks for any
 help folks.

[newbie] How to switch between X 4.0 and X 3.3.6

2000-06-09 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

I installed 7.1 using Expert mode, and elected to install X4.0 along with the
usual X. It defaulted to X4 when I first booted up Linux. Unfortunatly the
mouse wheel didn't work and in the process of trying to get it to work, 3.3.6
became the default. I think how I made 3.3.6 the default was when I ran

install CD and it looked like that is when it installed 3.3.6. When I rebooted,
the wheel worked, but I was in X 3.3.6.

Hmmm, I just tried XF86Setup on my machine, and it segfaulted too.
Xconfigurator works fine though, try that.

I really don't want to have to sit through another reinstall tonight. I

Re: [newbie] Upgrade from 7.02 to 7.1?

2000-06-07 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

I just finished upgrading.

Two problems right now. First, "setup" is not installed. I'm not sure if this
is my fault since I went through the expert install and picked all the packages
(and just missed that one) or else if Mandrake got rid of it. I loved setup.

Secondly, my mouse wheel no longer works. I have imwheel installed, and my
wheel has worked in all previous versions, but for some reason it doesn't work
anymore. Could it be because I'm running X 4.0? I'd appriciate it if anyone had
any ideas on how to solve that problem, as it's almost annoying enough to go
back to 7.0.

Other than that, it's pretty nice. Harddrives are now mounted under
/mnt/win_* instead of that nasty /mnt/DOS_*; and it seems to guess at the
drive letter (so that /dev/hda1 is mounted under /mnt/win_c) The new Helix Gnome
is in there (although I had already installed it under 7.0)

And unfortunatly for you, it's enlightenment-0.16.3-11mdk

Overall, I'd say it's a nice evolution of 7.0. Nothing too new, but just
enhancements to current things. A job well done by Mandrake.

 Hi,
Is there a smooth upgrade path from Mandrake 7.02 to version 7.1?

 Has anyone upgraded successfully?

Also, does 7.1 include the newest release of Enlightenment (16.4)?

follow the directions, and then up comes a nice GUI installer. It might take a

I'd have it defaulted to "yes". The expert who doesn't like non-OS programs
will know to check it, whereas the average person who doesn't care about
how free it is probally won't even notice the checkbox. And then they'll be mad
when they boot it up the first time and can't find a browser.

Another suggestion is to have Sun's StarOffice (and maybe Netscape Communicator)
as checkbuttons too. Some purists are offended by the idea of having a
non-open source program in their systems, whereas others want both the free
speech and the free beer. Since the default for the checkbutton is "no", this
could be a nice compromise between the two crowds.

I'm not sure why Print Screen doesn't work in Linux, but you can use ksnapshot
to take a quick image, or use the Gimp. In the Gimp it's under Xtns-Screen Shot

At times, it is easier to email(privately) a print screen of what you

Print Screen button but it no longer works with Paint. Was this for
Windows only? How do I go about it?

 Any thoughts?

Re: [newbie] GET READY FOR A DISCUSSION: Libaries

2000-05-25 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

Wow, a company that actually listens to it's users! Amazing!

The most important thing I can think of is to include all the programming
libaries even in a standard installation. For while these people probally won't
ever program, they will have to compile stuff and it's a huge headache to track
down a missing libary or two. So include all the development files that you'd
include under a programming install, in all of the installations. It would
make a lot of newbies (and me) very very happy.

That's my main suggestion. And since you said you wanted a seperate email for
each topic, there's more on the way.

Re: [newbie] GET READY FOR A DISCUSSION: Security

2000-05-25 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

I don't have M7.0 yet, but I like the idea of the different security zones. One
of the main complaints I've heard on this mailing list is lack of desciption of
what the different zones actually do. So tell the user what exactly is
happening when you select a certain level. Or maybe, have like a checklist,
where the user can pick and choose what exactly they want to do. That would be
cool. Keep it simple (like 5 levels) for the avearage person, but let the
expert pick and choose.

And include some sample firewalls or something like that. Somethign that
would be useful to the average Dial-up (or cable modem in my case) person, who
doesn't need a lot of exceptions like for a FTP or web server, but just needs a
good regular firewall. That way the user doesn't have to figure out all the
ipchaining rules and stuff; which at the moment totally loses me everytime I
try to read through the how-to. Of course, maybe it's not a good security idea
for a "one-size-fits-most" firewall, but it's just a thought I had.

Re: [newbie] Tools - GET READY FOR A DISCUSSION

2000-05-25 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

One of the things you talked about was desiging new tools. One thing that would
be neat to have, but I'm not sure how exactly you'd do it, is a .tar.gz
uninstaller. Have a program that keeps track of where all the files go when you
do "make install" and then have the program delete those files if the user
doesn't want the program anymore.

Or on that line of thought, maybe a program that'll automatically install a
.tar.gz file. I relieze not all .tar.gz's follow the same pattern, but about
95% of them it is "tar -xzvf the_file.tar.gz; cd the_file; ./configure; make;
make install". And while you could put that in a shell script, many newbies
don't know how to do that. Heck, you could combine that with the uninstalling
suggestion I had above and make into one program. Of course, for those
.tar.gz's that don't follow the pattern, I'm not sure how you'd find out if
they follow it or not, and if they don't, then what? But I like hte idea of a
program that untars and installs .tar.gz's automaticaly for you. It
confuses a lot of newbies, and I know it sure as heck confused me.

That doesn't seem to be working for me. I hit altctrlf2 to switch to a
new terminal, and then I login. Then when I type "startx -- :2" it gives me a
list of the options, which I figure is because I never really give it an option
with the space between the "-" and ":". So, I then tried "startx --:2", but
then that gives me this:

If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages

Then it hangs, and I have to hit ctrlc to bring back the prompt. And no I do
not have a ".XO-lock" file in /tmp. The same exact thing also happens with
"startx --: 2" or "startx -- : 2" (notice the slight changes in spacing) if
that would affect it any. I know I've gotten two X sessions going at once
before, but apparently I didn't do it the way you instructed.

There is quite a performance difference between SCSI and IDE drives, it's just
a matter of whether you'll be able to recognize it. If you copy lots of files
back and forth, or deal with large amounts of data flowing through everyday,
then you'll probally want SCSI. Or if you are a super power-user, and must have
the absolute best, then you'd get SCSI. But for the average Joe, the price
increase isnt' worth the performance increase for SCSI.

And so long as your SCSI card is supported under Linux (you can check on

SCSI drive.

 Hello,

[newbie] Upgrading packages

I'm having a bit off a problem upgrading/installing some rpm files. Gnapster
stopped working for me for some odd reason, so I was trying to get some other
Linux ports for Napster. I found Gnome-Napster but it said I needed gnome-libs
1.0.53 and I have 1.0.14. So I went over to rpmfind.net to get the updated
version.

But when I tried to install that, it said that "gnome-libs = 1.0.14 is
needed by gnome-libs-devel-1.0.14-1mdk" so I can't upgrade. And then trying to
upgrade gnome-libs-devel says "gnome-libs = 1.0.58 is needed by
gnome-libs-devel-1.0.58-1mdk". So i can't upgrade gnome-libs-devel until I
upgrade gnome-libs. And I can't upgrade gnome-libs because my old version
of gnome-libs-devel needs the old version of gnome-libs. So I'm in a Catch 22.
How do I upgrade both gnome-libs and gnome-libs-devel?

The other day, I gave up on Windows 98, and installed Linux-Mandrake
6.5, and let me say, first, that I LOVE it. It is SO much more stable!

Glad you like it. Also, while the box says 6.5, it's acutally Mandrake 6.1.

That said, onward . . . (1) I've no sound, except rare beeps from the
main computer when I click on something I'm not supposed to click on. I
 can't hear anything at all from the speakers;

Mandrake 6.1 doesn't configure sound during installation, so you'll have to
configure yourself. However it's really easy. Open up a console, and type "su"
to get to root. Then type "setup". You'll see an option for sound
configuration, so run that. Now you can have sound.

(2) How to get "out" of
 KDE into basic text=driven Linux to run command lines;

On the taskbar there should be a button somewhere that runs xterm, a Linux
terminal. Just click on all of them until something that looks like a DOS
prompt comes up. You can also hit Alt+Ctrl+F2 to change to a full text-console.
Hit Alt+Ctrl+F7 to get back to the GUI.

 (3) Gnome runs,
 but the keyboard dies in Gnome;

No idea what's wrong.

(4) how to decompress *.gz files, and
install, because I wanted to upgrade my Netscape to a 128 bit
 encryption, and I don't know how;

gunzip uncompresses it. So "gunzip the_file.gz". I'm pretty sure that's it. Also
if i'ts a *.tar.gz file then its "tar -xvzf the_file.tar.gz" to uncompress and
expand it.

(5) how to work with WINE - I got WINE
in a RPM format, ran it (via "root"), and it said it installed, but I
couldn't find anything to click on, and never knew how to access it; (6)
I tried to install gnucash and xaccount, and the OS called for
 libXm.so.1, libjpeg.so.6, and libXXm.so.2, which, upon research, I found
out to be "Motif" files, not that I know what that is, of course (I
don't); (7) I searched "Motif" and got a page about it that totally
confused me, and by then I was bummed out big time; (8) how to access
emulators, install DOS programs and run them via same, etc. Where are
the DOS emulators? What are they called? I can't find them.

Everything else I don't know.

Is it possible to upgrade LILO on a machine currently running the older version?

Of course, that's how most geeks (read: Linux guru's) will upgrade. You can get
it from here: http://www.freshmeat.net/appindex/1998/12/04/912827201.html if
you're brave.

If you're doing a fresh install of Mandrake, can the new LILO be substituted for the
old one?

I don't think it can be. However, if you want to set up a Linux distro beyond
the 1024 limit, you can install it past that. Just make sure you make a boot
disk during installation. Then, after you finish installing, use the boot disk
to get to Linux. Then download and install the new LILO, and you're set.

 Regards,
 Nathan

I was going to comment on this news too, I'm excited about it. Finally you can
put Linux at the back of the drive with no worries at all. The 1024 limit also
confused a lot of Newbies (including me) when they first heard about it, so now
that won't be an issue anymore. I wonder if Mandrake will put it in 7.1

Fortunatly I didn't have anything real important on my computer, so they only
big loss is reinstalling Windows. And since I used Linux to view all the disks

Yesterday was the day that the dreaded Chernobyl and other variants

Apart from trashing your disk, some of its variants also wipe out your bios.
Of course it runs only under winblows so this may explain why your computer
booted up fine under linux but keeled over and died under windows.

If this is the problem you MAY be able to get a new bios chip from either

I was going to comment on this news too, I'm excited about it. Finally you can
put Linux at the back of the drive with no worries at all. The 1024 limit also
confused a lot of Newbies (including me) when they first heard about it, so now
that won't be an issue anymore. I wonder if Mandrake will put it in 7.1?

Posted April 26 on Freshmeat.net is a patch LILO 0.21.4.2 with changes:
1024-cylinder limit has been removed by a patch that uses the EDD bios
extensions and supports up to 2 TB disks.

That's just normal Netscape behavior. You'll just have to deal with it until
Mozilla (aka Netscape 6) becomes stable/fast enough for you to use as your main
browser.

Hi all. Wondering why Netscape never goes to my home page upon loading. It
always seems to go to some sort of internal 'about' screen. I HAVE set the
preferred home page in preferences. If I click anywhere on the 'about' screen,
then it goes to the home page.

1. Mandrake supports DVD drives (so that they can function like a CD-ROM drive),
but you have to use a seperate program to play DVD movies. And I don't think
there is any DVD Software out for Linux, but I could be wrong. But if you want
to play movies, check out www.opendvd.org for more info about the current Linux
DVD situation.

2. I have no idea. I have a "old" creative drive that does just fine, but I'm
not sure about it's Evilness factor : )

i'm after buying a DVD drive,
 1: does 7.1 support dvd's
2: which dvd drive shouldn't i buy, eg bad ones or ones produced buy

Re: [newbie] Compiling from source - guess I'm just not getting it...

2000-04-26 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

Just downloaded the Linux version of cthugha from the web - in tar.gz form -
followed the installation instructions, and as usual, the program doesn't work -
Can't seem to find the executable, when I do a Find Files in KDE for " cthugha*
", I don't find an executable that works - the closest thing I find is
/usr/local/lib/cthugha-L, which I would assume by it's location is a library
file - anyway, out of desperation, I tried running that file and got a
segmentation error... This sort of thing happens every time I compile stuff from
source - I guess I'm just not comprehending things here... I used to write c++
code in DOS, so this really shouldn't be such a problem for me - What am I
 missing

I don't think kmail has a limit on messages per folder, I have 1,174 right now
in the Newbie folder that comes from this list. But I'm not sure why kmail and
VMWare screwed up on you.

I had a strange thing ahppen the other day and I'm not sure if it was kmail of
if the vmware problem I was having caused it. Well first off I tried to use
vmware and got it up and running but i think i filled up my linux partitions.
The question I have is does kmail have a limit on msg's per folder? I noticed
I had somewhere around 250 in the trash and after deleting a few more kmail
went nuts and wouldnt do much of anything. At the same though vmware had
messed up my box pretty bad. While rebooting I was dropped into a shell
(I forgot to write down why) so as root I deleted every vmware file I could
find, then rebooted and went into interactive start-up and didn't let vmware
try to start. Then I edited the program startup thing and took vmware out.
Unfortunately kmail lost all my saved mg's :(

If you do, just boot off of that, and after you get into Linux, change LILO

Just based off looking at source code of programs for Linux, the two most often

both of them. I know that's what I plan to do over the summer (well, I already
know some C++ from school, but I know almost nothing of perl)

I know that this is rather off-topic, but I notice that Linux comes with a few

Out of the wisening experiences you have all had, which programming langauge
would you guys say that it would be wise to invest in? Thanks

Re: [newbie] LILO and modem issues

2000-04-20 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

First problem: LILO. Right now, I have to disable the primary hard drive
in BIOS to boot my Linux drive. When I boot the Linux drive, LILO asks me
if I want to boot to Linux or my floppy drive. I'd love to be able to make
a choice between Windows and Linux as everything boots up. I attempted to
reconfigure LILO, at the command prompt, but obviously I am not getting
something. I have the feeling that I need to somehow configure LILO on my
Windows hard drive, since that is my primary master and what boots first.
 Any ideas/suggestions?

Where did you install LILO? I have my system set up the same way (Windows on
the primary, Linux on the slave) and I have no problems dual booting. LILO
should be installed on the primary drive, in the Master Boot Record. If that's
the problem, you can change with linuxconf. Type "linuxconf" as root, and then
go to "Boot Mode". Set the LILO location to /dev/hda and that should fix it.

Second, I thought my modem was configured properly during the Mandrake
install. Whenever I try to use it in Linux, it says the modem is busy.
It's definitely not. I bought the confounded modem expressly because I was
under the impression that it was supported by Linux. It is a Rockwell ACF
II 56k data fax modem, on COM port 2 (in windows language). Today I read
something somewhere that suggested Rockwells aren't usually supported by
Linux. Was I misled? Can anyone point me in the direction of a Linux-modem
 webpage?

I'm not sure what's wrong with your modem, but the web page you want is
http://linmodems.org/

Sheesh. I realize I sound like a babe in the woods here. Bear with me.
Thank goodness this list is labeled "newbie"!

Don't worry about it. We were all newbies at one time. : )

Re: [newbie] permissions on DOS_hda1

2000-04-17 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

In /etc/fstab, add "umask=0" w/o quotes as one of the options at the end of hte
partition you want to be writable. Should be right after the other options.
Here's mine for instance:
 /dev/hdb5 /windows vfat user,exec,nodev,nosuid,rw,conv=auto,umask=0 0 0

And this is another thing Mandrake should do automatically. They mount it
automatically for you right now, so it probally wouldn't be that hard for them
to make it writable to everyone. Or maybe there's a good reason to leave it
defaulted as read only.

 another stumper for me?

I just wanted to make a new directory on the DOS partition that I could
put some WP8 files in (because the apostrophe comes out on the printer
as something stupid in Linux right now) and it said I didn't have
permission. I checked the "fstab" and hda1 includes "user" in
permissions. I checked properties by right-clicking on the icon and it
includes user, group and others for both read and write.

OK, so I made the directory as super-user, gave it "a+rwx" permissions,
and still couldn't save a file in it. Access denied. No permission to
 write or what ever

Again, what am I missing here?

Re: [newbie] permissions on DOS_hda1

2000-04-17 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

I *think* I understood what you wrote, but I'm a bit confused. All the
symlinking and stuff. Anyway, the way Mandrake "auto-mounts" it's HD's (at
least in 6.1, although I'm sure it's similar in 7.0) is it created several mount
directories (ie /mnt/DOS_sda5/) during installation and then at boot-up it'll
mount /dev/sda5 on /mnt/DOS_sda5. That way the newbie user doesn't have to deal
with mounting his harddrives, Mandrake does it for them.

I think maybe you got confused because my mount point for /dev/hdb5 is
/windows. I just created it there myself because of some small convinces,
mounting it in /mnt/hdb5 would mean an extra mouse click when looking for mp3's
with XMMS. And it's slightly less typing when I work at the console. But don't
worry, I know that most of the time mount points will be in /mnt and that's the
way a standard Mandrake install does it.

There's generally, as far as I'm aware, no reason to mount dos drives
automatically. This should be a /mnt mount point and /mnt mount points aren't
 intended to be automatically mounted.

On the other hand, I'm refering to automatically mounting during the boot process,
instead of when the mount point is accessed later on.

rw should make it writable. I'm not sure why umask=0 is needed, unless this is
just because it's not ext2. rw, alone, makes ext2 filesystems writable.

Filesystems which don't directly pertain to the actual Linux configuration you
boot into should not be mounted during boot, unless you're dealing with networking
(in which case I don't have enough knowledge to say one way or the other, except
that in many a Unix environment, these are automounted only when a user tries to
access them, instead of during the boot process).

What I've read and helps to keep everything clearer is that what you create in /
are symbolic links to the mount points in /mnt.

 E,g.,

 /c: = /mnt/c:

By using ls -l or ls -F against /c: or even just /, the user sees /c: is a
symbolic link to a /mnt mount point and can therefore immediately realize or
assume that this is not mounted during the boot process.

mount /mnt/c:- will "automatically" mount /mnt/c: according to the
definition in the fstab file, if there's a definition for it there.

If that's not done, a user does

 ls /mnt/c:

and /mnt/c: is automatically mounted, then this is automounting as is often known
 in Unix.

Then, /c: is accessible, in all of these cases.

I'm not sure what form of automatic mounting people are referring to, here,
because automatic applies in all three cases, in different ways. In Solaris,
automounting "foreign" filesystems refers to the latter meaning, as far as I'm
aware, but because this is a newbie list, people could mean something different.
Even in the expert mailing list, people could mean any of these three
 possibilities.

"Automatic" is a fairly general concept and context usually helps to clarify the
meaning. Explicit explanation always clarifies the meaning.

So, which are you people usually referring to?

The general recommendation of placing any filesystems which aren't mounted during
the boot process in /mnt is a good idea, because it keeps a system configuration
more immediately understandable. Mount points can be placed almost anywhere, even
buried n directories deep; however, to become accustomed to creating
configurations according to more general or "standard" guidelines, it's good to
 follow these.

Create mount points in /mnt and symbolic links to these in /, or your home
directory (/ is better, because in / these are accessible by everyone who has the
privileges to use these). It's a little extra overhead in setting up, but when
 doing ls -F on /, for example, it's immediately evident that /cdrom, /a:, /floppy,
/c:, /d:, etcetera, are symlinks to /mnt mount points.

Mounting can't be done using these, because they're symlinks, but mounting is done
relatively infrequently, while access is done much more often; therefore, the
extra typing of /mnt for mounting and umounting is insignificant.

Mandrake may have made / the location of these mount points, but this renders the
system a little less immediately understandable, because any actual directory
hard links in /, should be part of the main configuration. cdrom, dos partitions,
 and floppies aren't

Re: [newbie] lots of crashes???

2000-04-16 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

I hate to say it (again), but this is absolutely correct. To gain
widespread acceptance any Linux distribution *MUST* have a good browser,
a good email package, and (oh no! here it comes!) support Winmodems, ...
 ugh, Linmodems!

This is quite true, sadly. Kmail is great for my simple uses, but I know that
many people would find it lacking and want outlook back. But there is some
email client, whose name I just forgot, that is suposed to be quite similar to
Outlook. But as of yet it's not far enough along to even be able to release any
version yet.

And Mozilla is promising on the browser front. I still like IE better, but
Netscape 6 is a huge improvement over Netscape 4.7 for me.

To expand on the modem idea, Linux also needs to get an AOL port too if it
wants to get really really big. Of course, the kinds of people who use AOL
aren't usuallly the kind of people who use Linux, at least right now.

Anything short of this and it's a sideshow in the big market place.
Sure, you'll get people like me stuffing it into server rooms to do all
kinds of stuff. But we'll never tell the pointy haired boss.

The one thing Linux needs to get accepted to the PHB is Office. Everyone and
their mother uses that in business, and while there are programs to read and
write .doc files, there just isn't anything better than actually having the
original program to write and read with. And then they're all those
inconsistancies with the other formats of the MS Office package.
