Re: Possible Recommendations for a good USB sound card please

2016-03-03 Thread Larry Higgins
Oh, I'm sure we do, since we live just outside of the Chicago Land area.
I've just never had occasion or any real need to pay a visit to such
establishments. But hey, that might be a rather interesting way for me
and my dear wife to pass the time one afternoon. Maybe she will be
tempted to pick up the guitar again. At least she can buy some new
strings for the old excuse for the guitar she has now, and has had for
years. Hopefully they could give me a good demonstration of the cards
you recommended.

I have taken a look at the Steinberg Web site, and their descriptions of
their products make them seem at least worth taking a good look at. But
I still may try giving my Audigy a go before deciding to make such an
investment.

Thanks,

Larry

Listers,

I guess that subject line kinda says most of it, but just some
clarification.

I am looking for some suggestions for a reasonably priced USB sound card
without any game audio gimmickry like what I am experiencing with my
Realtek card on my Dell, but a pure audio presentation.

At present, and most likely for the foreseeable future, I will continue
to be using an analog stereo system, so don't need to pay particular
attention to HDMI, or anything related to that.

Would like to have a card with all the appropriate line inputs and
outputs, and with the quality of an audigy, or maybe even better, if
that is indeed possible for a good price. And just as a bonus, I would
like to be able to access the software that comes with it using
Window-Eyes.

The only reason I am asking about a USB card is because I don't want to
have to install a regular card. However, if my best bet is to just
forget USB in favor of some real quality, I would be willing to do so.

Of course, I am primarily acquainted with Creative Lab cards,
but any other reputable brand would be acceptable.

Thanks for any input,

Larry

Re: Possible Recommendations for a good USB sound card please

2016-03-03 Thread Larry Higgins

Joe,

The main problem I notice with this card, is that it tends to phase out
centered voices on many stereo recordings. It also at times sounds as if
it has an overactive audio gain setting. I just never know how it is
going to react from song to song, or selection to selection. It just
isn't a very sound environment IMHO, not like my old Audigy, which was
both dependable, and at times, down right amazing as a reproducer of
pure audio.

I'll admit that my demands are small, since I only use my sound card for
listening to audio streams, and mp3 files, but very little in the way of
actual recording. But when I had occasion to do some of that, the
results were usually quite adiquit for my needs.

Listers,

Something has been kind of bugging me since I began using this Dell XPS
7500 machine back in march of last year.

It seems to me that the on board Realtech sound card has a
characteristic of making voices sound as if they are cave like,
depending how they are positioned. I think that if they are completely
centered in a stereo version, they sound more reverberous, or as if they
are a bit more in the background than they should be, at least more so
than they sounded with my old Creative Audigy card.

If anybody has also noticed this with either this or any other card, and
have a ready solution to what I at least consider a problem, I would
really like to hear about it.

Guess I can live with it, I have for almost a year, but if it could be
corrected, at least without having to buy another card, in the hopes

I have that old Audigy in the old computer, and have considered taking

Listers,

Please search your memories and tell me if you have encountered this
problem. But before I get to the problem, which might be obvious by
this question. Is it possible for an administrator to be able to tell
if you are recording a stream as apposed to simply listening to the
stream on a program like Winamp, or any other player for that matter?

The problem I am having is even after setting a scheduled session for
recording a particular program, TR will record for a few minutes,
maybe 20 or 30, and though the recording is continuing, at least it
appears that way, the audio simply stops being input to the potential
recorded product.

I have set the program up to reconnect to the stream in an unlimited
fashion, but this simply does no good, I still rarely get a complete
recording, at least not for the past few weeks.

This is a recent Phenomena. I have been making weekly recordings of
this program for many years, and have never experienced anything
quite like this.

If anybody could please give me any insight into just what might be
taking place here, it would really be greatly appreciated. It really
has me pulling what is left of my hair completely out!

Sure hope to hear from someone soon, this is maddening!

Well Humberto, I forgot all about Tapin. I tried it once and found it a
bit more complicated to get setup than TR and just kind of gave up on
it, but this might either be a possible alternative, or at least
something to try.

Nevertheless, I am still holding out for a solution that renders TR the
once reliable program it once was. So if there any further suggestions,
I certainly will be grateful.

Listers,

Please search your memories and tell me if you have encountered this
problem. But before I get to the problem, which might be obvious by this
question. Is it possible for an administrator to be able to tell if you
are recording a stream as apposed to simply listening to the stream on a
program like Winamp, or any other player for that matter?

The problem I am having is even after setting a scheduled session for
recording a particular program, TR will record for a few minutes, maybe
20 or 30, and though the recording is continuing, at least it appears
that way, the audio simply stops being input to the potential recorded
product.

I have set the program up to reconnect to the stream in an unlimited
fashion, but this simply does no good, I still rarely get a complete
recording, at least not for the past few weeks.

This is a recent Phenomena. I have been making weekly recordings of this
program for many years, and have never experienced anything quite like this.

If anybody could please give me any insight into just what might be
taking place here, it would really be greatly appreciated. It really has
me pulling what is left of my hair completely out!

Sure hope to hear from someone soon, this is maddening!

The new version of winamp

2015-12-23 Thread Larry Higgins

Hello listers,

Just wanted to know if any of you have used the latest version of Winamp
from Radionomy? If so, how accessible is it with screen readers? I found
out that the there is apparently only two versions, pro and light, and
the pro is around $19.00.

I might consider springing for the Pro version if I knew that it was
actually worth it, or maybe another way of putting it, if it wouldn't
break all of my presets and WE scripts/apps. I'd far rather use the old
version for as long as I can, rather than destroying a perfectly working
Winamp listening environment.

Total Recorder and hibernate

2015-07-18 Thread Larry Higgins

Listers,

Just wondering if anybody can tell me if TR 8.5 actually works with
sleep mode with Windows 8.1? I don't see any option for it in the
advanced scheduling options, so just wondering if hibernation will
accomplish the same thing?

Thanks,

Another annoyance with TotalRecorder

2015-04-06 Thread Larry Higgins

Hi ,

I had the following happen before on a previous PC with XP, but it has
reappeared on my new W8.1 Dell XPS.

When opening up a file to be edited, TR has to go through an image
calculation routine before I can begin my work. I guess I don't mind
enough to give up on the program, not by any means, but I sure would
like to just get on with it like before,

BTW, this happens with .mp3 files that I have downloaded from audio
streams. Anyway to stop it?

BTW, I downloaded Goldwave and reupped my registration, and tried
downloading a stream through it as well, but for some reason, GW was
telling me that the file format wasn't supported, or something to that
effect. Anyway, it wouldn't permit me to play the stream.

I realize that GW, or TR aren't meant primarily as a listening agent,
but I thought for sure that GW might make this a bit more simple,
therefore allowing me to use GW as an alternative. But any help with
this one would be greatly appreciated.

Ken, to shut TR down completely, just go to the task manager and end

Due to an ongoing computer crisis, I have been using my wife's

with Total Recorder.

Every time I open up total recorder for any reason, I find that it

transfer or copy to another drive, where a file might have been in
the process of being edited, I cannot remove the thumb drive without
going to the task manager and ending a task which should have

I am using the Kernel-mode filter driver as recommended by TR in the

be OK to run another driver instead, and would I get a different
result from the change.

I mean, it is so easy to forget that it is still stuck open in the
task manager, although it seems to have no other function at that
stage than to be stuck there

I think I had another question, but at present, I can't remember

2014-11-26 Thread Larry Higgins
This may not apply in the least, I am still using
XP, but I noticed absolutely no difference in the
response in the menus after upgrading to the
latest and greatest version. I also admit to
being way behind on my version of WE (7.2), but
remember the days not too long ago when the menus
were totally responsive. Most likely there is
nothing for it but to upgrade and come into the
21st century, and maybe that will soon be in the
offing, but right now, these menus drive me nuts,

Re: Converting YouTube to MP3

2014-05-16 Thread Larry Higgins
Dane, I confess to not having read entirely through this tread, so
others might have provided similar reasons to mine for gravitating to
this program, however, my reasons are as follows, and quite simple.
I found myself listening through some audio oriented material from a
radio station's broadcast following the Kennedy assassination in
November of 1963. My issue that brought about the need for such a
program as SONGR came about because I couldn't figure out a way to
mark my place so I could return the next day and resume listening
where I left off. Considering that these files could be up to six
hours long, you can imagine how frustrating this could be. I can
assure you that it didn't make the experience of listening to these
historic and sad broadcasts any more pleasant than they already were.

I can also put these files on my VRStream and listen to them in my
bed room at my leisure, fast forward and rewinding them at my pleasure.

So, all in all, this little application is to me a kind of Godsend.

Yes Howard, Humberto is so right about SONGR. I for one, have
downloaded and converted lots of great material to .mp3 files from
Youtube in the past few months. You really can't beat it.

I've still yet to fully explore, or find as much satisfaction from
other sources, so I might have to consult with Humberto again myself
concerning those issues, but this is one you wont be able to do
without once you start using it for Youtube files.

Good Luck,

Is there a program that at all compares with Winamp in quality for the Mac?

2014-03-17 Thread Larry Higgins

Well Listers,

With the fast approaching end of support for Windows XP, it may be
time to decide on either a new PC, or making the jump to a Mac of
some variety. I have been a very happy Winamp user for the past
decade or so. The program got even better and more convenient when
Window-Eyes introduced scripting, and made Winamp an almost brand new
program. Of course, the main things I like about Winamp are WE's
ability to let one press a key to move from station to station, or
stream to stream without having to go to the book mark menu.

Another indispensable feature of Winamp is the graphic equalizer,
along with all the useful presets. I'm sure all you Winamp users
would agree with my sentiments on these features. I guess all I
really want to know is if there is a similar program that might
closely reflect Winamp and its conveniences on the Mac platform.

When it comes to a new computer, at least in the very near future, I
may be dreaming due to our families present financial situation, not
too different from so many these days. But the idea of switching to a
Mac has been under discussion. I'm not too sure I want to make the
switch myself, but the inclusion of voice over might make the switch
at least seem the more practical one.

Anyway, if any Mac users would care to comment on this issue, I will
be happy to discuss this off list, since I'm sure I will have a few
more questions that will not pertain to the overall topic of this list.

Thanks much in advance,

Larry

Anders, if I may. Does Hijack Pro allow recording
directly from a live stream? Also, does the
program allow one to record such an mp3 stream,
as well as edit the results as an mp3 file, or
does one have to convert to wav in order to edit,
then save the final product back to mp3. TR
allows me to record and edit in mp3 without

Yeah Tom, they were probably trying to either
taunt you or tempt you toward purchasing the
software version by including the feature as a
grayed out option. That's just good basic marketing I suppose.

RE: A free AAC recording software solution?

2014-02-26 Thread Larry Higgins

Thanks Tom for that info. TR is the same way, so
needless to say, I am using the pro version. Sure
wish TR would include AAC in their recorded
stream options, but who knows, licensing cost may
be at issue with that. Anyway, it is nice to have
this option, though it might not be the absolute
best solution. Like Alexandra, I would prefer a
straight rendering into AAC rather than a
conversion to another format, but again, one takes it as one finds it.

Again, Thanks,

Larry

Hi Larry,

Yes, I agree, Screamer is great. I think I misunderstood your question a
little because I was wondering if there was a way to record the aac stream
without it being converted which would result in having the original quality
in which the stream was broadcast. I would prefer that to a conversin to mp3
or ogg. But to my knowledge Screamer doesn't do that.

If you want to schedule programs you could try Tapin Radio, which also has a
free version as far as I know. I haven't played around with it much, but the
streams are more up to date and if you add a stream to your favorites you
can schedule the recording. Ought to have a look at it myself again, but
like Screamer so much and haven't got much time to do a lot of experimenting
right now.

Take care,
Alexandra

RE: A free AAC recording software solution?

2014-02-26 Thread Larry Higgins

Alexandra,

Recording streams with this program is really easy. All you need do
is open an audio stream, and look for the playback\rec option with
your tab key, press enter, and start recording. If you are recording
an AAC stream, it will convert to mp3 on the fly, so you don't have
to worry about doing that. The program uses the LAME encoder to
accomplish this task.

Keep in mind that I have just started to use this program, so I might
have a bit to learn as I go.

Keep in mind that a lot of the streams listed in the program's
listing of streams are no longer up to date, so if you are already
using a program such as Winamp, you might want to take the streams
you are interested in and pasting them into the edit box when opening
streams. Anyway, it will work well.

It isn't as convenient as Total Recorder, but it does get this
little, but vital operation done. I sure wish it contained a
scheduler. But since I can't do that, at least I can copy an AAC
stream without having to use Winamp, and then using TR with the what
you hear option with my sound card to make such a recording. As long
as I don't get stuck somewhere, and not get back to the house for
hours, I'm OK with not having a scheduler for such recordings. I can
just stop when I get home, and play the results in Winamp later.

OK, I'm starting to ramble, so I'll go.

Enjoy using this program if you should choose to do so,

Larry

Looks like it works!

2014-02-25 Thread Larry Higgins
Hello again Laurence, and looks like it works. Now if I could really
push things and be able to schedule like TR. But hey, it's free.

I don't guess Screamer would actually record from Web based players,
or will it? I do like how it converts these AAC streams to mp3, that
is just so cool. I couldn't dare beg for more.

Thanks very much for your recommendation,

Larry

I use Screamer Radio for this; it works happily with AAC and will
record the stream direct or convert it to a different bit rate.

It also sits happily in the system tray rather than taking up

It has its own station directory, or you can add your own if it
hasn't got what you want.

A free AAC recording software solution?

2014-02-25 Thread Larry Higgins

Hey Listers,

I am some what shamefully looking for a freeware recording decoder
for AAC Internet audio streams. Hopefully this will be a temporary
solution until I can afford to buy a full blown application.

I presently use TR for my direct streaming of mp3 programming, but
have no way of recording AAC streams.

I am also still using XP, and will be for a while I'm afraid.

Any help with this matter would really be appreciated,

Thank God for SONGR

2014-02-02 Thread Larry Higgins

Hey Listers,

I just wanted to take time to say thanks to a kind person on this
list by the name of Humberto who told me about SONGR. If you want a
good and reliable converter of files from Youtube, then this is
definitely the ticket. I might have been a little disappointed with a
small few of the downloads from Youtube over the past week, but not in SONGR.

I became genuinely interested in Youtube conversions around the 50th
year of the Kennedy assassination because some of the programs
available were quite long, and I could find no way to mark them up
for later listening, making it necessary to relisten to ground I had
already covered. I put out an appeal for some help with the problem,
and Humberto suggested SONGR. It took me a month or so to finally get
around to putting it to the test, but I'm really glad I did. For me
at least, this program has lots of potential.

So, thank God for the list, Humberto, and SONGR.

OK, this may sound a bit over the top, but it isn't often I find an
application as useful as this one.

Thanks for graciously putting up with my gushing ,

Larry

A question for Total Recorder users

2014-01-14 Thread Larry Higgins

Listers,

I have a recurring problem, not so much with TotalRecorder, but with
my personal memory, and I am looking for a way to avoid this matter
of forgetfulness. The problem is this.

When I open up a URL for direct recording, I some times forget to hit
the record button, and as a result, I come back to save my work, only
to find that there is no work to save. Is there a way to make total
recorder to start recording by default as soon as the URL is opened?
I know that is evidence of a bit of laziness on my part, but in my
haste, I am always making this mistake. I would simply like to take a
giant step toward preventing commitment of this particular error in the future.

that all of the Winamp Pro features, including the cd ripper were now
freely available in the final version of Winamp, as I take this one
to be. Is this in deed correct, and if so, how do I go about making
full use of this feature in particular.

Is it possible that by opting for the previous installation in order
to avoid complications that I might have precluded myself from using
this feature. If so, do I need to reinstall?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Larry

RE: A question about the Youtube player

2013-12-14 Thread Larry Higgins
Well, glad to hear you're still hangin' in their with the technology.
I['m 61, and have been fortunate to have been using a PC for the last
22 years. I'm a Total Recorder man myself, so shouldn't have any
trouble on that front. I just thought that the ads might be contained
in other files connected with the program independent of the main
file, so thought that might cause other problems, but if not, then
that works for me . Actually the program looks kind of
interesting and exciting to mess around with. Lots of interesting and
hopefully useful features.

I'll let ya know how it goes as soon as I get the chance to give it a go.

Take care,

Larry

Re: Still Looking For Help With Winamp

2012-07-06 Thread Larry Higgins
Always use direct sound output, you can't go wrong, unless your
recording program needs to use it at the same time Winamp is using
it. In that case, one of the programs is gonna win. That's when you
need to use wave output when running Winamp, at least temporarily.
The volume control is in deed much more responsive when using direct
sound output.

Hi Tom,
uninstall Winamp, and make sure you delete the Winamp directory in
the program files on your C drive.
After that install Winamp version 5.6, which can be gotten on the
Winamp site.

Hello Joe and list: I also have been consulting another
list! After looking around, I finally found where to switch from
"Direct Sound to "wave output (and vise versa) no soap! If I
switch to "Wave output (which actually did resolve the problem)
but then if I turn Winamp down, I turn everything down, which I
don't want! So I had to switch back over to "direct sound!" As
for unloading Jaws as you suggested, again no soap! When Jaws is
unloaded, there seems to be no way to use the arrow keys or
anything else! Since Winamp is my default player, I've not tried
Windows Media; I'm not even sure that you can fast-forward through
a file with Windows Media anymore (I do know that you cannot go
back) I also know that you cannot go directly to a certain spot in
a file with Windows Media like you can with Winamp; these are
reasons why I prefer Winamp over what few audio MP3 players I have
used! I do appreciate all of your efforts to try and
help! Hopefully (one way or another) I'll get this resolved and
will report back to you if and when I do!

let's say I want to listen to a stream that doesn't play at a
high volume, I'll get that static (or hiss) or whatever! For
those who don't know, in Winamp, to advance through the file,
you can hit either the left or right arrow key (I know it
works this way with Jaws) may be something different with
other screen readers; anyhow, one can also hold that arrow key
down to advance through the file quicker; it is here that gets
me into trouble as I get that bad sound! But will try Joe's

this clears up the problem (I've had this happen a long time

You could try an alternative output pluggin.
go to prefferences control-p, press letter P till you hear
plug ins, press O till you hear output, then tab to the list,
there is a waveout, and a direct sound.

Select the plugin that is diffedrent to the current one, tab

see houw your audio sounds after this change.

Then maybe try playing the same file in, for example, windows media.

don't know how you fast forward in WMP though.

Master volume annoyance

2012-07-01 Thread Larry Higgins
Hope someone can help me with this little pesky annoyance. For some
reason that I just can't figure out, one day my master volume,
instead of starting at full, 500 to be exact, now starts up at 448,
making it necessary to open up the volume control to turn it all the
way up. This has been going on for the past few months, but I just
got pissed off enough to finally inquire about it. I can't seem to
find anything within control panel that would allow me to save new
settings. I don't think I have anything loading at startup that would
effect the setting, but I dunno.

I am still using XP Home Edition. Times are hard . Anyway, if
someone could help me to solve this one, I would be grateful,

Recording an audio cd using Total Recorder

2012-03-26 Thread Larry Higgins

Listers,

I am about to pull my hair out trying to figure out the best way to
record an audio cd with TR without using the sound board, so as to
keep my screen reading program from making an undesirable appearance.
I would like to record playback through Winamp, or if there is a
better method, please let me know.

If you are wondering why I don't just rip, this particular cd has an
error at the last cda file, which will not allow me to save the
totality when ripping with CDEX. I guess I could just ignore the last
file, but the problem is that I would miss a chunk, though it be
small, of the book I am ripping.

If anybody can help, it would be gratefully appreciated,

Larry

My wife had her sound output changed by
connecting speakers to the wrong connection on a
couple of occasions on her laptop, and as I

I think within the setup for background recording, there is a way to
test/play a stream to see if it works. I don't know how one could

to append one file to another either. That unfortunately may end up
being the source of your problem. I certainly hope not, but I don't
think you'll regret making the upgrade.

Just making sure. When you save as, when you tab backwards to see
where the file is being saved, it is being saved on the desktop?
Just for the hell of it, do a search on your hard drive for your
file with Windows find, just in case there is a duplicate. If there
is, that may be the one you have been working on.

I really wish you luck with this one. As I suggested, you might
send an enquiry to the guys at High Criteria and maybe that can
suggest something we haven't thought of. TR sure has been a great

I don't know what controll s is used for.
What I said is
Shift l marks the left boundary and shift r marks the right boundary

the stream.
Once this region is marked there is a special file save that you get

to

using the alt key.
arow down in through the files menue and you will se special file save

It will if he chooses to replace it. This works the same as if he
were using a word processor. If he chooses not to replace the file,
then the new version will not contain the deleted material.

This process really shouldn't be all that difficult, but computers
sure can act strange at times. I took a look at the manual the other
night regarding saving selections, and saw no indication that the
professional edition was necessary for this function to work. Just
hoping that there wasn't a mistaken ommition in the docs.

OK Tom, but here is a question. Can you save such a selection to a
file. If you can, and yet can't save a file without the material that
you were able to save a selection too, then that is even more wierd
than not being able to save a file without deleted material. Does
that make sense? I mean, if you could save a selected portion to
another file, then you would at least know that saving selected
material of any sort were at least possible.

Re: Question about goldwave, CD reader.

2011-03-15 Thread Larry Higgins
Hmmm, I hadn't heard this either. I know that this has nothing to do
specifically with Goldwave, but I did confront a somewhat frustrating
problem when using CDEX to rip from cds with my HP external USB drive
for the first time. I was trying to make use of the HP driver with
CDEX, and ultimately realized that I needed to use the generic
setting in order to do the ripping process properly. It seems that
the multiple driver choices in CDEX are meant for internal drives,
not USBs. What would happen when trying to rip, I would end up with a
sizable file, but complete silence. When going back to the generic,
perfect rip. Maybe I'll have to give this a go with Goldwave. I've
just never felt the need to do so before. In fact, I never even knew
that you could do ripping with that program

Here it is:

"Do you have an external USB CD drive and are you using Windows

can cause the computer to crash. You'll need to use other CD

Hi, Mark and List,

Just to be sure we're on the same page, go to tools by pressing alt-that.
Then select cd Reader and press "enter."

From what you write, that's what you're doing. I wonder if perhaps you're
running Windows 7 and using a version of Goldwave which is not compatible
with that operating system.

If this isn't the problem, I have to guess that your copy of the program
is corrupted. Get another copy and uninstall the current copy before
installing the new download.

I rip cds occasionally and have no difficulty.

Has anybody ever had this happen?

2011-02-11 Thread Larry Higgins

Listers,

Lately I have been experiencing what appears to be a startup problem
that manifests itself when plugging in my card reader with a 16gb
SCHD card for copying content to my VRStream. Some times, I am told
that my device isn't a USB2 device, and I should think about
installing USB2 on my system. OK, at least I think I remember it
saying something to that effect. When I just press escape to remove
the message, my copying definitely is slower than when I don't
receive this message. I think I was also having this problem the
other night when trying to rip with cdex. The rips were painfully
slow. In that case, I went to sleep on it, and the next morning,
things were back to normal, and my rips proceeded normally.

I'm just wondering if there is a place I can go within the control
panel to check on the status of my USB setup in Windows, as in the
control panel. And if so, what should I look for. Whenever I look at
some of this stuff within device manager, it seems more than a bit
over my head, and I consider myself to be an experienced PC user
after lo these 20 years . Anyway, this problem is becoming both
annoying and worrisome. Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Larry

Regarding the Winamp update messages whether they're annoying or not
varies greatly depending on your point of view (smile). I absolutely
love keeping up with the very latest software in most cases so I'm eager

the other solution to stop these messages is to install the latest

kid on the block, so if I did ask it before please forgive
me. A few months

ago all of a sudden I lost my windows sounds such as the starting and
shutting down of windows, and the sound that indicates hardware
disconnecting or connecting. I've checked all the volumes and
made sure that

nothing is muted. If I check the list of sounds
they are all there and work My sound card is a S B live and I'm
running XP and windoweyes. I can't think of anything I did at the time I
lost the sounds as far as downloading or installing any program
or anything
like that, they just all of a sudden disappeared. Any thoughts
would sure

be appreciated. I sure miss them.
Thanks..

Re: To all of you Total Recorder aficionados out there, a puzzle for you

2011-01-08 Thread Larry Higgins
Well James, I tried that approach, but no go. I am willing to assume
the role of a total beginner here and have you direct me. For one
thing, what should be my driver configuration. At present, I'm using
the "User-mode virtual device driver (Playback/Record through
TotalRecorder)" selection. Do I need to default to using TR as my
default playback device? I think I have successfully done this, but I
still can't get any sound recorded or played back with the soundboard
muted. I really couldn't swear as to just what my settings were
before I started having this problem once again. I do know that I
didn't have to mute my soundcard to have it go silent when recording
linein before now. Man, this is sure frustrating.

At 11:52 AM 1/8/2011, you wrote:
You don't have to accomplish this through Total Recorder. Just open
Windows Volume Control, and assuming you're running Windows XP,
check the box to mute the Line In. By default Volume Control shows
playback controls, so muting the Line In will only stop it being
played back. In other words, it won't affect your recording at all,
and you can get on with using your computer as you normally would.

Just a little bit of background. I had a nearly fatal accident with
my computer at the end of March of the previous year. No need to
go in to all that, except to say that it became necessary to
rebuild my computer from the ground up, software wise. Yesterday,
after all that time, I needed to schedule and record a radio
program from my stereo receiver, using the linein to my soundcard.
That part went fine, but the problem is what follows.

The problem is simply this. I can no longer get TR to mute the
sound coming into the linein when recording. This used to allow me
to record from my receiver, allowing me to do any other work
without interference from what I am recording from the external
source. I have scoured every dialog box for any remedy, and just
can't find one. I remember there being a monitoring option that one
could check or uncheck in a previous version, and when unchecking
that box, that, at least as far as I can remember, allowed me to
record linein in the background, but now I can't seem to find
anything remotely relating to monitoring, unless it is preview
monitoring, and that doesn't seem to help.

Please, please, don't get this issue confused with hearing speech
through my soundcard going to my linein recording. I have that
covered, no problemo.

If I can further clarify the issue, please let me know. I guess I
can always find something to do other than use my computer during
these times, but would like to once again have the option of
computing in silence.

Thanks much,

Larry

Just wondering if there is any way to delete files from either a usb drive

just want to know if maybe I've missed a step somewhere. Don't see such an
option so far in my exploration of the advanced player.

Re: Total Record and Windows7

2010-11-02 Thread Larry Higgins
As I said, if you record the stream by opening the URL, you don't
have to worry about hearing your synth in your recording. If you
record from your receiver, you record using line in and you don't
have to worry about hearing your synth either. I'll have to do some
experimenting with streams using the software driver, but I don't see
why you should hear speech with a netcast unless you are using the
what you hear setting. That can be very frustrating until you figure
that one out.

I think I'll work with some of this tomorrow just to refresh my
memory about how I used to do things before I discovered recording by
passing the sound card entirely with the open URL option. I'll let ya
know how things turn out.

\Peter, I may not have the answer because I am not using Windows 7.
The only reason I even respond to your post is to ask a question.
Are you able to record the stream by using the open URL option in
the file menu? If you can do that with the stream you are
recording, then you definitely wont have to worry about JAWS being
heard on the recording because the stream is being downloaded
directly to a file rather than going through the sound card.

Another thing to consider. In the TR installation, there is a
listing of recommended drivers to be installed and used by TR. Did
you have TR default to the recommended driver?

I address these issues humbly because I haven't yet migrated to
Windows 7. As a matter of fact, I am still using XP, and intend to
keep on using XP until I cain't use it no more . I take this
stand because TR and other hard and software are still working well
enough to meet my needs. But when that starts to change...

One of the more frustrating things I've found with the latest
releases of TR are the way speech lags within the menus. I have to
believe that the folks at High Criteria can do a better job with
that issue. Surely they appreciate their loyal blind following
enough to address the problem.

Good luck, and hopefully someone can better address your problem than I.

Replay AV, and javascript

2010-09-18 Thread Larry Higgins

Hello to Replay AV users,

My question to you all is simply this. Will Replay AV background
record javascript streams? I am currently using Total Recorder, and
let me say, I love it. However, I consider it rather frustrating that
there is no way to background record some streams, especially those
that require javascript, as well as those that are found on the Radio
Time site that make use of an embedded player of some type.

If I recall, when using Radio Time, TR tells me that such a file
cannot be recorded in such a way, and I think it might be related to
either scripting or an embedded player arrangement. Anyway, does
Replay AV present a work around for this problem, or are there
methods of capturing audio pretty much the same. Hope this is making
some kinda sense .

Thanks,

Larry

Re: Victor Reader Stream or Book Cents

2009-12-27 Thread Larry Higgins
John, Not that I think that this is an issue that
would make me consider throwing my Stream in the
garbage, or migrating to one of the other
players, but she is kind of right about this one.
If you press the 4 or 6 button when you are in
the bookshelf, it does take some time for the
stream to fully identify the book. It has to
speak all the numbers up to the presently
highlighted book, and if you press to the right
or left too fast, there can be a significant
delay. Not having tried any of the other players,
I don't know if this is an issue or not. It is
easy enough however to press the go to key, and
estimate the number of the book you are looking
for, and of course, that cuts down considerably
on having to thumb through all books. In other
words, kind of a small annoyance when you
consider all the nice features and power of the machine as a whole.

Just my two cents,

Larry

about the Victor irritating. For example, I
hate how slowly the machine goes through a list
of NLS books. You can't just hit the button
five times and be five books further up or down
the list, you have to listen to it read every
single number, with puases between. And,
sometimes, it stops after a number and pauses
for a few seconds before reading either the
book title or moving onto the next number.

I am supposing that they used less than the best options for software.

Another issue with Total Recorder - got it fixed

2009-12-27 Thread Larry Higgins
Not that there would have been a solution outside of reinstallation,
that's just what I ended up doing, and the problem is now solved.
Even tried restoring my system back to the 20th of this month, a day
before making the apparent mistake, but lost sound altogether. I'm
still trying to figure that one out. It looks as if something such as
a driver file was removed or renamed, making it impossible for an ini
file or a registry entry to correctly locate a driver or something.
Anyway, I really sound like I'm on top of this one huh :). Anyway,
what matters is that everything is once again working as it should.
Just thought I owed you all that much in the way of an explanation anyway.

I recently made what I believe to be the mistake of literally accidently
downgrading from a higher build of TR, and in the process, had to
completely uninstall TR in order to get a completely clean
reinstallation. The problem I am having now is that no matter what I try
within the settings of TR, for some reason, TR controls my computer's
volume at startup, making it necessary to open TR in order to simply
press the arrow key on its volume control to get it in line with its own
position. In other words, the volume setting in TR is set as high as it
will go, but it doesn't give me that volume level until I press the
right arrow key, and then everything operates normally, at least as far
as I can tell. I have tried every setting in the driver portion of the
settings dialog box to no avail, even to the point of going to control
panel and removing the driver. When I do that, my volume starts
normally. I have selected the option in the drivers section "User-mode
virtual device driver (Playback/Record through TotalRecorder) (Radio
Button)." Under this option, I have TR using the driver only when TR is
loaded, but still get apparent interference at startup with TR.

Now I have been using this program for I guess 10 years, and have never
had this kind of problem. So, what gives? Is there something within the
registry that I need to tweak? I guess I can live with this state of
affairs, but I feel a little insulted at my inability to get to the
bottom of this one, at least my technical intelligence and pride are a
bit hurt :).

Any help with issue will be so greatly appreciated,

Another issue with Total Recorder - yet another wrinkle

2009-12-26 Thread Larry Higgins
Here's an interesting development. When logging in as my wife, my
volume at startup is normal. After logging out of her account, and
logging back into mine, startup volume is normal. Where it gets
interesting is after restarting and logging into my account, we're
back to the previous volume issue.

I guess the next thing I'm going to do is go to the \application data
folder, and see if there is something else to mess with. I just can't
seem to find anything in the troubleshooting section of the help for
this one. Maybe there are some forums on the TR site that I haven't
been made aware of where someone else might have encountered this
issue. Nevertheless, if any of you TR users could give me a pointer
or two, it would sure be welcome.

Thanks again,

Larry

Another issue with Total Recorder

2009-12-26 Thread Larry Higgins
Hey listers, Sure hope somebody can help me with this puzzlement
regarding Total Recorder.

I recently made what I believe to be the mistake of literally
accidently downgrading from a higher build of TR, and in the process,
had to completely uninstall TR in order to get a completely clean
reinstallation. The problem I am having now is that no matter what I
try within the settings of TR, for some reason, TR controls my
computer's volume at startup, making it necessary to open TR in order
to simply press the arrow key on its volume control to get it in line
with its own position. In other words, the volume setting in TR is
set as high as it will go, but it doesn't give me that volume level
until I press the right arrow key, and then everything operates
normally, at least as far as I can tell. I have tried every setting
in the driver portion of the settings dialog box to no avail, even to
the point of going to control panel and removing the driver. When I
do that, my volume starts normally. I have selected the option in the
drivers section "User-mode virtual device driver (Playback/Record
through TotalRecorder) (Radio Button)." Under this option, I have TR
using the driver only when TR is loaded, but still get apparent
interference at startup with TR.

Now I have been using this program for I guess 10 years, and have
never had this kind of problem. So, what gives? Is there something
within the registry that I need to tweak? I guess I can live with
this state of affairs, but I feel a little insulted at my inability
to get to the bottom of this one, at least my technical intelligence
and pride are a bit hurt :).

Any help with issue will be so greatly appreciated,

Re: WINAMP 5.57 and SOME OPERATING SISTEMS

2009-12-26 Thread Larry Higgins
Well, for the longest time, you had to use the direct sound output
plugin for that purpose, but a couple of years ago, it became
possible to do the same with the waveout as well. I don't know but
what they discontinued the waveout due to redundancy, or if my
particular copy just didn't have it on board, but I can't imagine
even how such a thing could happen. I will observe though, that using
the Waveout for volume control was a bit delicate. It had a kind of
hair trigger, not taking much of a press on either arrow key to have
it move up or down.

Well John, I'm sorry to say that I can't help with your issue,
because it seems to work here on the same identical system. One
thing I've noticed, I no longer have a waveout plugin all of a
sudden. I guess I'll have to do a search on my 'puter in the hopes
that I can locate one somewhere on my system and simply copy it
over to the plugins folder, but I dunno. There are times when you
really need that plugin, especially if you need to record something
using Total Recorder and while using both programs at once .

Re: An MP3Gain question

2009-06-30 Thread Larry Higgins
Thanks Timothy. I thought that when bringing up the add folder dialog
box, that you might be able to simply select each of the subfolders
by using the shift-arrow keys, but I guess not. I did bring up the
dialog box for each individual folder instead, and used the apply
album gain option, and I think it's working. At least that is the
output indicator when I use the WE Speak all function.

Anyway, thanks much for your common sense and concise explanation,

Hi listers,

I'm wondering if it is possible, or even more importantly advisable
to try to choose multiple folders for normalization with MP3Gain? I
really don't like the idea of all of the tracks in the different
folders to be averaged differently which would ultimately defeat the
purpose of normalization in the first place. I have three folders
with about 200 or more songs in each. Now, it seems to even me quite
a tall order to have a program of any kind work that hard at
processing this many files at once, but if it is possible I would
like to get it done. To summarize, I have all of the folders placed
in as subfolder, and would like to select them all for processing. I
plan to place all of these music files on a card for listening on my
VRStream.

All help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Textaloud wont read pdf document.

2009-03-27 Thread Larry Higgins
After all this time, you may already have answers to your question,
but just in case you don't, here are some questions that I hope
contain an answer or two. Are you sure that it is a text based .pdf
file, or is it an image? If it is an image with little or no text to
be read, then Textaloud, like your screen reader cannot read directly
from the document. If it is text based, then I don't know what the
problem might be. Have you tried reading the file with your screen
reader first to make sure that it isn't actually a series of graphic
images with text written on them? If it is in deed an image, and not
a text based document, you might try running the document through an
OCR program like Openbook, or Kurzweil if you are fortunate to have
either one of these programs. After doing so, then convert the
resulting text document to something that Textaloud might recognize,
then try converting to .mp3.

I must admit, that as an only occasional Textaloud user, that I've
never attempted to have Textaloud render a .pdf file into audio, but
if it is designed to do so, then the suggestions I've given above
will work. Sure hope I'm not out of line here, and hope you've solved
your problem by now.

Re: Is this possible with Goldwave?

2009-02-06 Thread Larry Higgins
OK Gary, this is the way I did it. I simply selected all of the files
I wished to merge from the folder in Windows Explorer, then copied
all of them to the clipboard, then move focus to the Goldwave Merge
dialog box, and paste them all into that box. I would think that
would take care of the problem, meaning, that my selected files would
be placed in the proper order. However, that blasted last file in the
bunch still insists on being the first in the list.

I did find a rather clunky way of dealing with this problem though. I
simply opened up the completed product file in Total Recorder, and
cut the material from the last cd at the beginning, and placed it at
the end of the file, making things right, but I really shouldn't have
to go to all that trouble. I guess I can at least be thankful that at
least I have that option.

Thanks for the suggestion,

Larry

Hey Dennis, thanks for your answer. As I said in a later post, I
managed to remember the file Merge option just after posting my
question to the list. Actually, to be accurate, I was reading the
changes page on the Goldwave site for v5.25, to which I immediately
downloaded and upgraded and heard the term "File Merge" and it hit
me . As I said, I don't use the program a whole lot, so I tend
to get a little rusty with the recall.

Now, could you tell me if it is possible to keep the Merge from
placing the last file in the merge cue at the top of the order? One
would think that the fine people at Goldwave would have tackled
that little quirk long before now.

Hi listers,
I just downloaded a couple of audio books, and unfortunately, the
person who converted these books didn't convert the files into a
single file for each cd, but left all the tracks converted as
individual tracks. All I want to do is to take these files, and
place them in their proper order, and making one mp3 file for each cd.
As of a few minutes ago, I took a look at the batch processing
options in Goldwave, but can find no one step way to select all
these files, and consolidate all these mp3 files into one file.
Is there a way to do this, or must I copy each file, one after
the other, adding them to the last mp3 file created in a manual
fashion. Surely there has to be an easier way to do this. If some
one can instruct me in the best way to go about what it is I am
trying to do, I would really appreciate the help.
The reason I would like to accomplish this particular task, is to
make it easier to listen to these files on my Victor Stream,
rather than the Victor classic, because fast forwarding, and
rewind are so much better on the stream.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Larry
