Re: [RCSE] Contest idea....Time on tow penalty for TD?
A very good answer Mike! I have been wanting shorter lines in F3J since 2002... But I have to go with the pack as the CIAM meeting said no this year to shorter lines. But to me it seems like more and more competitions in US are now both shorter lines and group scoring? That sounds like a good and good way to go for me. I like a good thermal contest. Maybe pilots will beat me more often but that's cool. Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Oh, cool, I can get my ultra high tech model with super expensive high modulus carbon to keep the weight down and have real fun Or I'll just pop off with my Bubble Dancer at .1 second. Shorter winch lines usually work better. Plus it gives the ligher models a better chance since they no longer have to lift up the ton of line required to keep the big models from breaking it all the time. Plus, if you break it, you fly it That always encourages everyone to stop abusing the winch. And if that doesn't work, go for longer times. Actually, the launch discussion is kind of silly. You must all be talking to electric guys who can't define a launch because they all use different launch equipment. Electric sailplanes are in competition are a total turnoff for me because your launch equipment goes obsolete so fast. AMA TD (or basically Unlimited these days) is what it is because of the Ford Long Shaft motor and 300lb line. Everyone has somewhat similar launch equipment, and we can all agree on what to fly. F3b is also working (except for the denial that it exists in the US) because it has a well defined launch system. Everyone can go out and practice and try to design better flying models instead of better launching equipment. F3j with the current rules is broken. It is very much the luck of the timer. I know the past few team selections, which timer you had was good for a 1 second difference in flight time. It's basically a launch race and timer reaction time event where you take yourself out of the competition by missing the 100 landing. Models and launch technique are a long way from what was created. And shorter launches will only introduce more luck with being on the wrong side of the field. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. I dont know the story in Visalia. But I seriously doubt the Spread spectrum will work as of today in a full carbon fuse without some serious antenna installation. But as Gordy said buy and try. Yes. All with JR spectrum on 2,4Ghz and a Pike Perfect or maybe Supra? Shit there came the problem ;-) Anyhow they now also opened up 5Ghz for wireless access and that would help a lot on range. OK You guys maybe right. Just looked at Horizon (where I got my 72mhz unit..) and the output strength seems to be 750mw. In Norway (Europe) we have maximum 100mw on 35mhz anybody know the output power of the DX6 and DX7? Anyhow the broadband I got is wireless in the valley and 5Ghz seems to have better range on the same power as 2,4Ghz. According to the guy that installed it and also that after I changed I got to range a better transmitter 8km away (that is over 26000feet). Driving into the entry to the site, is a huge banner spanning over the entrance Welcome to the World Soaring Masters! Along the road to the flying area are banners on poles flying in the wind about every 20', in various colors, kind of like walking the gauntlet to King Arthur's big joust contest! At the site is a huge circus style tent, with even more banners, each banner having a different sponsor's name and logo. Inside the tent is a hospitality set up for Pilots and vendors to chat, long tables (again reminiscent of a King Arthur challenge), filled with trays of fresh cut fruit, giant shrimp, wings, BBQ ribs, various selections of rolls (I think they were shipped in from Germany!) with thin crunchy wheat crusts and a slight honey flavor inside. There is a stage and what looks like a band being set up. (someone said it was Lenard Skynard) On the field I think I can see two TV crew trailers with those telescoping satellite antennas on each. One on each end of the field. There is one of those jumbo-tron things, showing clips of JW, DP, BC proudly displaying their world championship medals and of course their I beat Gordy badges too.. along with other rc soaring clips which include events such as Visalia, MidSouth, and the recent Casa contest (which is kind of funny because all you see is Phil Barnes butt as he bends down to fix a winch! It all looks more like some medieval competition than a rc soaring event The field has been manicured with the words World Master's RC Soaring 2006 The only thing that would really complete it is JoJo. There was a lot of talk about how David Hobby keeps avoiding flying against me, but I think they were mostly kidding. :-) I stopped in at the Roberts hotel, and a bunch of guys were out having a brew or two, and as I walked up I was faced or butted with a line of moons, as in full skin cheeked! [RCSE] Re: Multiplex Slim Star servo?
I have been looking for this servo for a very long time and got to look closely at one at a dealer just a short while ago. What made me leave it there was 1) It is a bit difficult to mount (even with two different mounts in the box) 2) The servo horn was strange and I am not sure it will hold up for F3X planes. It is split and hold together by one small screw 3) The total travel is very little. If I remember right it was only 60 degrees. 4) The dealer did not recommend it ;-( I will outfit my Supra and Pike Perfect with proven Volz instead. And driven by a JR radio... First flights are done and away. Pictures are out! www.f3j.com Big thanks to Philip and Mustafa. If I just get my head together there will be a full article from Philip tomorrow. I must say that though production moulds seems to be working fine there are a lot of models to be produced and new workers to be learned before the Pike Perfect is in regular production. So be patient with them to get things going and a production plan set up. Since this is mostly a US list you should ask the two dealers there for delivery. Soaring USA ( http://www.soaringusa.com/ ) and Skip Miller ( http://skipmillermodels.com/ ). But I doubt they can give you exact dates yet. [RCSE] Re: Gluing Servos v.s. Servo Frames
Frames Though I have been using tape and epoxy with micro baloons a lot. Sometimes there is no space for the frames. A good tip is to wrap some kevlar thread around the frame before you glue it in. Then you can cut the kevlar and use the frame one more time. If you dont use the kevlar you will either need the epoxy to go around the edge of the frame or rub up the plastic of the frame a bit so the epoxy glues well. I have tested goop a bit on some servos and untill now it has hold up. Anyhow the most slop in models is that the skin is too soft. First of all put a layer of carbon or glassfiber in there (preferably carbon offcourse). Some producers have done this for you. What really helps is to join the upper and lower skin with some small pieces of balsa. Now build that model and get in the air Hilsen (Regards) Jojo NEW: www.jojoen.no Date: Tue, 28 Feb 2006 11:02:42 -0500 From: Corey Groves [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: soaring@airage.com Subject: Gluing Servos v.s. Re: [RCSE] Carbon Supra #48 flies - weight 61 oz !
I should probably leave it since I have not read every post (dont have time always). But I did a very simple test a while ago for myself. Not any scientific as I did not think there was need. But the numbers are there still http://www.jojoen.no/volz So up too 1,8A with a MM XP I am prety sure that the elevator servo on a X-tail sailplane demands just as much power as a flap servo. But that is only in the zoom and speed turns mostly. Atleast my zooms improved when I changed the servo... I will sure outfit my Supra with a good elevator servo for sure. But I will stay with my regular 4cell pack and wires I find convenient that day. I dont think there is much power needed for a rudder in a TD model. Unless the rudder is huge. I fly my Superior and Giant electro with a tiny 6g servo on rudder and have no issues (other than in out of the car...). Ever do what the timer said and find it was the wrong decision? Ever have a great pilot as a timer and see your flying improve? [RCSE] Re: Soaring V1 #7012
I missed this post (dont read it all...). An observant reader got me to it (David Stack) I dont know of any webpages but I can offer you some logging of my launches. Earlier I used the Lolo but I sold that a while ago and are now using the Z-log. Let me know if that is interresting and I will look into my archive and find some useful stuff. I dont have much data on the Zlog that I would call interresting but a quick check on one of the latest flights on the winch with 170-180m, to the turnaround gives: Climb speed 20m/s, after zoom 25-30m/s. Conditions were calm and -3celcius (26F) and I used my Pike Giant. Launch altitude were 200m+/- But beware that all launches are very different. It is all in the conditions, type of model and lines used. We also zoom of at very different altitudes deppending on when we get the right tension, if we want to go of early, etc In F3J we sometimes are able to pull the runners backwards if the wind is strong and the setup of the model is good. Some runners are offcourse stronger in this phase of the launch than others (John Diniz, David Hobby, me... ;-). In the last two WC's I have liked to use Juniors or fast small runners because they are eager and faster in the first phase of the running. But a heavy well trimmed quarter back or something would be nice ;-) I also know they meassured some time ago 120kg upwards on a F3B turnaround. And before the new stake rule I think the Germans meassured 50kg on the stake in the ground. But this is from memory. You might find some in the Ciam archive of proposals of new rules some years ago. A fact is that we use lines that are suited for the conditions we fly and what plane is launching. A 1,15mm line will probably break at 70-80? kg load and a 1,35mm (that we use in windy conditions) will break at 120kg? When the line gets old or slightly damaged it breaks at an earlier point offcourse EMC VEGA have some info http://www.emc-vega.de/pdf/hochstart.pdf http://www.emc-vega.de They state the braking point in Newton and have a bit lower numbers than me (I am not good in German either) but they are probably not way off. I see that this causes a lot of mind twisting out there. That is mostly good ;-) Maybe I should say that I did enjoy competing against pilots with varios in the last Nats. The ones I could see did not beat me (not easy to spot a vario among 10 others on the launch line...). Here in Europe we dont use varios even though we can at some contests. So the only time I have competed against any was at the Nats. Bottom line is that I think it is a neat gadget like other tools but personally I will not use it. [RCSE] RE: Jr R700 rx in contest environment?
Sorry. Same channel = problems for both Though a good Rx can outperform a poor one and therefore be the one still in the air. Also if the guy with the good Rx is closer to his plane or have a better Tx/antenna he can have control longer than the one with a slightly offset Tx/short antenna/poor antenna PCM versus PPM have nothing or little effect on range or better performance. What PCM does better is giving you the right movement without any jittering. The PPM system actually gives better range but with some jitter possible. The difference you see at the tests are because the whole receiver is built up in a better way. I have never tested the R700 in a contest so I cant tell if it will be good. Tested it in a electric seaplane though and it was good. [RCSE] RE: Supras done
Although I am not sure I will go for a 3.6 CG but the point with rotation on launch is something to look at. Some of the F3B guys use a couple of flight fases for this. They start of with one and deppending on the conditions go for two alternatives deppending on the pull they feel the are getting. The overshoot on the rotation can be minimized a whole lot by throwing well. But the problem can be that with braided line and strong motors (when there has not been a build up of the drum size) one can not tension up that much. Good thread ;-) Hilsen (Regards) Jojo NEW: www.jojoen.no Date: Wed, 04 Jan 2006 16:44:07 -0500 From: Mark Drela [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: soaring@airage.com Subject: RE: [RCSE] Supras done Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -snipp This is rather far aft hook position which requires special action during launch. On my Evo program the left slider is an elevator (speed) trim with a small gain. For the launch throw I push the slider all the way forward which feeds in a slight amount of down-elevator. Once the glider rotates and settles down in the climb, I pull the slider back to its normal center position for maximum load just short of stall. I have 100% Ail.Diff and lots of Ail-Rud coupling during launch, so I can steer with might right thumb, leaving the left thumb free to work the slider. PS I've done some sims of the initial pitch dynamics immediately after the throw. There is a very significant CL overshoot at the end of the initial nose-up rotation. So if you trim the glider for maximum pull during the climb and zoom, and throw with this trim, then you are guaranteed to stall at the top of the nose-up rotation. So for maximum launch performance, it is necessary to add some initial nose-down trim to safely get past the initial pitch transients after the throw. -- RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Although I never got to know Judy Slater I got to know the RC Soaring Digest Magazine from many years ago. Yes even in Norway we got this great magazine in paperform. For those who don't know RCSD, it has been the only rc soaring magazine that has existed which was not advertiser driven. Re: [RCSE] Hi Tech 5125MG Digital Wing Servo
I bought 8 several years ago for two planes. Ended up with one plane after refitting all 4 in the wing. Almost burned w hole in the wing http://www.jojoen.no/hitec5125.jpg Probably just fine for TD normal launching when you dont want to break that braided line. But for any hard launch or hard landings they are not up to it on a 3+meter model. If they were to change those gears to some machined ones I would buy the servo again. Tom Dan Ahearn wrote: Anyone have any experience with the Hi Tech 5125MG Digital Wing Servo? I bought a Pike from Tom Watson (maybe the one he refers to). To make a long story short; I stripped both HS 5125MG aileron servos on the first hard launch. It wasn't really the servos fault, aileron flutter was the real problem. I switched out those servos and put in a couple JR DS368 servos. The ailerons still fluttered. The DS368s were not harmed but rather were ripped loose from their mounts as the wing tips were ravaged by severe flutter. That is a very short version of a long story that in the end taught me two very valuable lessons: 1) JR DS368 servos are very much more robust than HS5125 servos. The 5125s may be OK for ordinary use but if you want servos that will survive a lot of abuse then the DS368s are better. 2) The Pike Superior in the SL (super light) version was not intended for hard launches with extremely fast zooms. It was made for early morning/late evening flights in low wind/light lift conditions where light weight is very important. It was anticipated by the designers that in low wind with hand towing you would not be able to do really hard launches with extremely fast zooms. I don't own a Pike anymore. I use all DS368s on my Supras since I tend to be an abusive sort of guy. Phil -- RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Your old D70 was crap compared to my new Nikon D50 But you battery was a killer boost for my photos when I ran out... Just kidding! Both are super. I have not set myself into the difference in the D70 compared to the D50. The D50 feels better in my hand though. I think they have done some small improvements on the case. I have used Olympus most of the time before and have loved those cameras for their great pictures and good zooms. What I got now was a camera that actually turns on when I want to (ready for action a split second after I grab it) and a autofocus that is blistering fast compared to a cheaper camera. As Nathan stated you need more lenses. The provided lens is good enough for most people in closeup but there is no way around a zoom lens. I was lucky that my mother had some Sigma lenses and a broken old Nikon house... Ooops the lens was mine.. I think we will see combinationlenses with both wide and zoom for our mirror cameras pretty soon so I dont have to miss any photos. [RCSE] Re: Airtronics new digital wing servo
If that is correct I guess they have specs that confirms to what I want. So I guess next is durabillity. I have not used all brands either but I know that the thin wings and large hingelines some of us are moving towards puts extreme loads on our tiny servos. The manufacturers must come up with better products because many of them are not up to the use (to thick or too fragile or too weak or too slow). I even flew half a round this weekend in Nordic champs with a broken aileron servo. Last time I did that was the last Nordic championship ALSO in 2003. Just because I had to test a new servo in a new model. Stupid me. This time my servo dealer said that he would rather have me use another servo. But I had too try. So it was my own fault So no matter what. We love that new servos with better specs AND durabillity comes on the market. Hilsen (Regards) Jojo www.grini.no snipp The last number for torque I was given by Airtronics was 53 ounces. That was a verbal, and I don't know how true it is. The problem apparently is that the server (hosted by ATT World Services?) does not have a reverse DNS entry. I'm copying this to Lex Mierop, who I think is still the list administrator. If Les can get a reverse DNS entry in place for this server, the problems people are having subscribing/unsubscribing and getting mail from the list should be resolved. To look at the header in MS Outlook, right-click on the email and select Options... In OS X Mail, highlight the message and select View | Message | Long Headers. Have a close look at the header for an email from RCSE and you'll see this near the bottom: X-SPAM-Warning: The server sending your mail [12.32.211.161] does not have a reverse DNS entry. Connection Rejected. Please contact your Dial-Up/DSL/Network ISP Provider. Though RCSE is no longer listed in the spam database (see: http://bl.csma.biz/cgi-bin/listing.cgi?ip=64.18.7.10), the lack of a reverse DNS entry is causing many (most?) email hosting services to filter RCSE email as spam. [RCSE] Re: JoJo Wins Norway Nationals this weekend!
Thanks Gordy! It was the most horrible flying conditions one can amagine even though the sun was out most of the time. The wind came over a small hill and made the flying almost like flying behind a slope in the turbulence. The thermals developed on the field but offcourse never got big or released before they had travelled behind us. And in 15mph winds on the ground and more in altitude one had to be careful. I even took good times and landing a bit farther away a few times to get good scores. That is one strange tactical thing to do!!! Most of the times I got home but it was much about stretching limits and coming home the right way. We got 7 prelim rounds and 4 final rounds in 1 1/2 day and that is good with 18 competitors (4 teams). I guess I have to write like you: Yes I did fly my Pikes. 2pre and 2finals with Giant and yes they are Volz and JR9303 powered! ;- Other than that it was more about tactical than models Strange scores here: www.f3x.no maybe more pictures in an hour or two. [RCSE] Re: F3J landing technique
Imagine Hollandglide that is on a airfield with concrete and roads. Then have fairly good speed and touch the ground with the hook or tail before the tone. It was done last year. Dont know if they did rule changes this year (just implent a local rule). Might have to use a bit of kick-flap... Do it on grass and it is even more a risky thing Then again is the antenna a part of the plane? Personally NO. Hollandglide is the biggest F3J comp with 136 comp... This year the conditions were good and Mustafa was out of the finals loosing only 24 points Then again most F3J comps are not that much about those few thousands of a second. It is a case when there are many competitors and few rounds with throwout. Hilsen (Regards) Jojo www.grini.no At the US F3J team selections held last weekend in Denver, I heard for the first time, of a special landing technique that involves touching the ship's tail to the ground first to stop the clock, then flying on for a precision landing; presumably after the working time has ended! I was going to ask about this of some of the present pilots, but in the rush of scoring I forgot! So, if anyone has seen this, or better yet, can direct me to a video showing this technique, so I can get details, I would appreciate it! [RCSE] Re: Teaching a kid
My son is 8 and fly ALL my sailplanes. Buddycable and keep it in a fun level. The interest goes up and down all the time. But as long as we have a good time together I am very happy. Those days he is not interrested I try to keep the trip short. He seems to be of no interest of my AVA after flying it for a while. Then the next day I fly a inexpensive Fling and he is glowing of interest... So it is not about the plane but more about what's cool and what his father flyes. So as long as I say it is cool flying AVA that day he thinks so too! I try to take over as soon as it is too difficult and dont let him do advanced flying yet (windy conditions, slope flying F3F model, etc.). But my F3F model on the winch seems to be cool for him. I have yet not given him both ailerons and rudder as he has enough with 2 functions... Then again he is only 8... A simulator on the PC that have good graphics is extremely fun for them (almost like playstation). And the Tx can be used instead of a joystick on all those PC-games. Re: [RCSE] launch foreplay
Ruined some of Don`s new lines I brought to Nats in the evening... Dont remember what day. Just plug the 150m F3J line in the ground, tension up and give it a good toss. You need more than 5mph wind. Offcourse you can do it with longer lines ;-) You will need 1,4mm line or better of good quality since the tension will be much greater than any TD/F3B winch start... Before WC in 2002 we were testing lines this way and ended up with 1,7mm line breaking. The launches were offcourse insane ;-) Sadly this is not possible in competition. But it has been normal to do a few waves in F3B now. But if you keep waiting for that super tension (basically going up on the correct angle to the wind or wait for a thermal coming thru) the launch director will give you a warning. This because you take up the launch window for all other competitors. Though the rules say nothing about using time on the line!!! So this is being done on many F3B competitions though most people think it is a about tensioning the line by going to one side. It is about going waving untill you feel you got that correct angel to the turnaround compared to the wind. Thats the path you will be going up ;-) I was also amazed at Nats how many that did not go straight for the turnaround before zoom. There is a huge potensial in straightining that zoom up (level wings against your downforce basically). Have some video somewhere but cant seem to find it right now. For those interresting in Europe and F3J I got a bunch of pictures from Samba taken at last EC F3J. Re: [RCSE] Who supports their molded gliders
These models are all hand made in specific colors, layup, etc. To have all type of parts in storage is not possible. Though joiners, tubes, etc is offcourse a mail away. If one does not care about colors there is in most cases some in storage. Normally the producers of these models (Pike, Tragi, Sharon, etc) have 1-2months waiting time for parts. These type of models is not a Lego set made in 1000nds... Some producers have though chosen to make only a very few layups and colors available (like AVA/Organic/Crossfire/etc.). Then the possibillity of something in storage is bigger. So first of all contact your local dealer. Then contact all other earth dealer and at last try the producer... [RCSE] Re: RES not for the elite
I guess I am entitled to a little message here since I am NOT American and NOT a RES flyer. BUT I did attend RES. Why? Well because I would love to test the format and Barry gave me a chance to be there for it. RES is a completely different task because the models fly so differrently. I know the deal because I learned how to fly rudder elevator but was still thinking all wrong in the RES at Nats. I flew it like my MUCH faster Pike Brio and ended up on the ground under that thermal I was flying over to. And my timer did the same mistake as me. He wanted me to be on top of the pilot in that thermal just to be safe. Well that was my mistake at RES. A slow RES and no lead poored into that fuse you are not going anywhere. You will go up in a fart but might have to plan your way home halfway up that thermal. So basic: Those that win RES will be worthy the throphy. And if they get a full day they will be even more worthy. I dont think I will be flying RES next year as it is so big leap in differrence of flying style. But those that enter (one would have to enter and event to win it or become a champion) are THE best. And since it is Nationals he (or she) will be the National champion that year. There is no way around that case. IF I would enter Visalia and IF I happen to win I will probably call myself champion of Visalia and the biggest soaring event. But there is a lng way to Visalia. Anyhow I do feel I am a small part of your soaring and are proud to have been there ;-) Hilsen (Regards) Jojo www.grini.no - Original Message - Date: Sat, 6 Aug 2005 14:03:18 -0500 From: Jim Deck [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: RCSE soaring@airage.com Subject: RES not for the elite Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hmm... according to Mr. Stump, those who fly RES are only there to get their chance at the podium - fliers eager for a scrap of the fleeting fame that comes from getting wood'. [RCSE] Re: Nats or why Jojo choose Nats..
Since my name came up I guess I will have to say a few words. I have never been to Visalia and who knows I might go one day. But what really triggered me for Nats (other than lots of friends backing up) is that it is: ---National Championship Soaring--- To me a National championship means that the best of the best is there and all others that likes to fly competition (and thereby be better at it). Those that were not there was held up by some way. Those will not be a National champion. Just like those that can not attend to the trials can not be world champion Also I had the chance to fly 4 competitions in a row on one trip. This is rather unique!!! I agree that it might have been strange if I won it. But I did not. There are so many good pilots in USA that wanted to beat me that I did not have a chance. Big funfly's and gathering I attend lots of times. I even have a funfly on the ice back home that I help arrange with 100+ pilots. But still nothing comes up to ---National Championship Soaring--- I know now that Nationals have a differrent meaning in the USA than we in Europe see it as. But still I feel that those I met in Muncie was people that liked the fact that they had to do an effort to get higher up that list. Yes even Daryl and Tom had to take out the very best of themselves (just two examples). To me a competition is the most important of all. At the same time I LOVE to share time with friends and NEW friends (which I got a lot of). A big hug from Norway PS there are room for both Nats and Visalia... and possibly a few more ;-) Hilsen (Regards) Jojo www.grini.no -- Date: Wed, 03 Aug 2005 21:02:02 -0400 From: John Derstine [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Marc Gellart' [EMAIL PROTECTED], 'Steve Meyer' [EMAIL PROTECTED], 'TJB' [EMAIL PROTECTED], soaring@airage.com Subject: RE: RE: [RCSE] National Fun Fly Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Marc and others: 150 registered, my error, but I did put a question mark after my number... it was a question. How many showed up? Counting multiple entries is like having dead people vote in a Chicago election, 150 is 150. :-) Anyway regardless of semantics, the numbers for NAT soaring attendance in no way reflects the potential pool of soaring pilots, my point. Also not to be misinterpreted, I love the fact that there is a NATs, that people do in fact work hard to produce it, and contest flying is a good thing if you enjoy it. What I see is the potential for a paradigm shift in the way we look at the NATS. As I guessed, many will object to any notion of change, it's human nature, it makes us uncomfortable, but looking at ways to boost all R/C soaring, not just the 80 pilots who fly TD at the NATs, is what I am talking about. I personally feel, and it is just my opinion, that there is room for several kinds of events at the NATS drawing more to the venue all at once. Letting them see first hand the competition, who knows some fun flyer guys or spectators might want to play TD or F3b. It's all about numbers, exposure and having an inclusive outlook, not an exclusive one. How to balance the so called fun flying or semi competitive events with the competition. Good question I guess. What is the goal or mission statement for the NATS? Is there one? I placed second in scale soaring at the NATS in 1999. Does it have any real significance? It is a nifty pc of wood, but since I was one of 5 pilots competing, it hardly has relevance to my flying skill. Granted an extreme example, but the point is the NATS has no real bearing on National standing just who won a single event in Muncie in July, no elimination series, no qualifying, just one other contest. I am just loving the discussion, and my comments have prompted some to speak out. it is only a forum, not a meeting of the AMA executive council. I don't have answers, just ideas and opinions like everyone else. The annual what events we should drop from the NATS talk got me going. The fact is attendance for any event will affect its likely hood of surviving, so my thought was if you are going to drop two meter, or hand launch, plus the way to controversial NOS discussion, what is in the wings waiting, how can the site be optimized and still have a NATs, one that draws 300 instead of 100. Does the NATS have to be The National Championship that some say it is because we say it is? Not a reason in my mind. Can it evolve to be a soaring showcase and National exposition of soaring as a community, not only a competition? Some made a big deal about one JoJo coming from Europe this year, why not make it jojo and company, an international invitational contest? Can we have a foreign national as US champion? Hey if you invite one... And so on... JD PS: For those saying put my money where my mouth is, I paid my dues, gave my efforts to organizing major events, submitting and passing rules change proposals for NATS events, for over 15 years, I feel somewhat qualified to talk on

Something opposite. Preferably dark colors and yes differrent tips/midsection there too. My comment on the Sharon was only about bottoms. A green plane against a forrest will in some conditions almost dissapear. This might be important in some fields coming in for landing low... Flying F3B in 150km/h turning fast on A-base just 20m in front of you with a treeline in the back might be easier if you have a scheme you know well. Especially if you do something wrong and have to do a correction. But true. On far distance most colors look black. Thats why I dont have any problem with zebra. But I will not choose green/red zebra next time. Rather white/red as the blur coming past me or the treeline formes a better color for my eyes.. [RCSE] Re: ballast ? wing/fuse
Problem with wing ballast is that you want differrent CG for different tasks. And maybe different CG on different wing loadings. This means you are stuck on one CG and will have to also put something in the nose (or take out) So even if it takes most time I like slugs and spacers... Lets take my Brio X-tail that I mostly fly on 119mm CG for duration tasks (from leading edge). Then in speed I fly it at 115mm with 1100g of lead (wing loading apx 51g/dm) In distance I like it to be at the same 115mm with 550g of lead (wing loading apx 42g/dm) Then I go to the slope and because of my flying style, wind gradient (turbulence) and shape of some slopes I vary from 112-119mm with 500g or 1000g.. My point is that my X-tail model likes to be neutral for speeds in F3B at 115mm but for other tasks I may shift it a bit.. Anyhow this discussion come sup every 2-4 months it seems ;-) Hilsen (Regards) Jojo www.grini.no -- Date: Wed, 29 Jun 2005 23:33:07 -0500 From: Greg Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Ian Roach [EMAIL PROTECTED], Jim Laurel [EMAIL PROTECTED], Dave Hauch [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: RCSE soaring@airage.com Subject: Re: [RCSE] ballast ? wing/fuse Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ian, Good point on the fuse ballast when using slugs. Ok I see there were plenty replies after I wrote this but anyhow... The name is Martin Hepperle he has a nice article about drag and linkage http://www.mh-aerotools.de/ Direct link http://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/linkage.htm It might seem small but with the small differences in todays models the drag is very important. Might not be that important to a slow TD model. But for F3B/F on top level The linkage on the Superior/Brio is not super. There are solutions that are much better but most of them with more drag. But it is hidden and gives and drag advantage when flying fast (and also zoom). It is offcourse up to each customer to build a better linkage. Personally I change out the flap horns to more secure ones in 2mm carbon (because I land VERY hard). It comes down to that Samba wants a ready solution that works and with small drag. Customer just screws the horn in the correct angle and all is set to go (or atleast the customer will ahcive the 90 degree flap etc. without reinventing the wheel). If you are planning on flying F3J or F3B I would suggest looking for 5dm2 size parachutes with welded rings or better. You dont want them to be to big. All dealers that have models from Samba (Brio, Superior, etc) www.f3j.com can supply them. www.f3x.com , www.specdoutsailplanes.com , etc. If you dont manage to get any I have 50pcs in stock and will bring to the Nats if I have any left by that time. Will also bring some of the new clear servo covers I can also ship if you dont manage to get were you live. You will have to check it while you hold it in your hand. To lay it down on the ground is of no use. The ground will shield all the signals. The antenna needs to be free out into the wind and your hand should be around the unit as a grounding object. Just like your car radio. The antenna is straight up with a small angle and the car acts like ground. If your car antenna is touching ground or the body of the car you will not be able to hear much radio. Atleast not in any good quality. Same with your model when you do range tests. No use of taking the test with the model on the ground. Your Rx was not meant to operate your model while it is on the ground But in your case you have the antenna on your Pike to the rudder so it might be ok still... Personally I would love to have one in my club. But on 35mhz We have a super Aerospectra and there is nothing I have seen that does a better job. But a Hobbico would be easy for all pilots to check when the arrive at the field. I would put at our peg-board... The best of it would be that pilots gets aware of what they are doing and will think more next time they go for that peg. From the reports it seems that the Hobbico checker will do that job very well. So I agree with Gordy. Even though some might not do as advertized I would like to have one! I have had this unit and my spectrum analyzer (SA) out to areas of concern, the SA (HP8594E) backed up what the LLC unit was reporting. I built a 1/2 lambda dipole to use whith my SA, so it is significantly more sensitive, but the LLC unit has identified off site on- frequency stuff, as well as the localized. Whenever I slope fly, it is the first thing turned on. The LLC is great value for the money. After some testing and comparison with the SA, the graticules (signal strength) are very helpful in determining on or off site extraneous noise especially when utilizing the included antenna. Between the LLC, and an OptoElecronics 3000A frequency counter (over-the-air) I can ensure the flying area is secure and TX's are broadcasting on frequency (the 3000A will read the carrier to 8 digits), until someone turns on... Other cool tools OptoElectronics (http://www.optoelectronics.com/) offers; - X Sweeper; more performance than the Aerospectra - Xplorer; Tunable to all the frequencies we use - RF Detector; I really like this one - you can adjust the signal strength so that when on-frequency interference (along with your own emanating signal) while you are flying is experienced it will alarm (like someone turning on in the pits) while it hangs on your belt. There are lots of devices out there that offer much more than the Frequency checker offered by Tower or an ICOM (noise). RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. 12m/s (26,8mph) Last year and 5 years ago (i think) we had Nationals (Norway) in 11-12m/s. Many pilots was way down the list because they had not practiced in these conditions.. I normally use 1,35 or 1,45 line and only use the pedal for the first 1sec and the zoom (so I dont get the line tangelled into the elevator) Cant beat those mono launches with a strong F3B model full of lead ;-) 320m is my personal best (1050ft) that I have managed to meassure. From the Ciam rules (sc4-abr.05.pdf) B.13. INTERRUPTION OF THE CONTEST B.13.1. The contest may be interrupted or the start delayed by the Jury if: a) The wind is continuously stronger than 12 m/s (9 m/s for Free Flight, Scale and Space Models) measured at two metres above the ground at the starting line (flight line) for at least one minute (20 seconds for Free Flight), unless specified otherwise in category rules. b) The visibility prohibits proper observation of the models (especially in case of F/F or R/C contest) or due to atmospheric conditions it would be dangerous to continue the competition. c) It is necessary to reposition the starting line. This may only take place between rounds, or groups in F3B and F3J. d) The prevailing conditions are such that they may lead to unacceptable sporting results. e) For F3A, F5A, F3C and F4C contests the sun is in the manoeuvring area. In the event of an interruption during a round, the remainder of the round may be completed as soon as conditions allow, with adequate notice given to all competitors and Team Managers. --- Hilsen (Regards) Jojo www.grini.no Date: Tue, 14 Jun 2005 16:40:53 -0700 From: D Hauch [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: soaring@airage.com Subject: max wind speed for f3b contest ? Re: [RCSE] pop offs...not good, rule worse
Should probably shut up again since I have never launched on a braided line.. But cant help it ;-) Here in Norway we have recently (1,5years now) gone from towmen and teams and to winches but still teams (we still do towmen at the Nationals though). In the first competition we found the biggest problem was that we wanted to change starting positions but leave the winches. This resulted that your team suddenly starts on a line and setup they have no control over. The plane just did not know if the line was prepared proerly (checked) and if the winch was set up properly. An improper winch can work ok for poor launches but get badly wrong when a big model tugs hard... Then there is an issue that some like thin line and maybe less diameter while others like something else. We ended up that your team needs to stay in one place with their winches but switch landing spots. Point is that as long as you have control of your equipment it is your fault you pop of. But when you HAVE to borrow another winch because of how the competition is set up you will have to ask the CD for a relaunch. On all other competitions (non of those are man on man) the pilot will have a relaunch if the line breaks or something goes wrong in the equipment. Even in electrics we do this. Todays controllers (and even batteries) can play us tricks that we can not control. We want the best pilot but that also offcourse knows how to outlaunch everybody else! Cant wait to test those big winches on braided so I know what you are talking about Hilsen (Regards) Jojo (that do 1kw launches higher than most...) www.grini.no - Original Message - Date: Thu, 09 Jun 2005 07:42:26 -0500 From: Denny Zech [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: soaring@airage.com Subject: Re: [RCSE] pop offs...not good, rule worse Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Gordy, I can see your points on line breaks, but pop offs are almost always in the polots control, like landings. They are smarter than that. Typically, I think the way it works is the mail merging and labeling and shipping happens at AMA, it has to, otherwise, there's little to stop the marketing guys with the video from re-selling the list to others or re-using it themselves, and then AMA would only get to sell or rent the list information once. That would be REALLY stupid, criminally stupid. By holding the list to themselves, they ensure they retain it's value for re-selling over and over. If they ARE just handing over a CD ROM of addresses to anybody who pays for it, the management need to be severely censured for bad management practices. So you don't like the DVD, it's your right not to pay for anything you didn't ask for. I think if you look thru your membership fine print, you can specify someplace that you opt out of any such lists for similar future projects. I don't blame the Academy for seeking revenue enhancements other than across the board dues increases. Those are never popular, yet more than ever modelers need the Academy for it's help in keeping and getting fields and permissions in a world where the free space grows tighter every year. And we need their good offices lobbying for our interests for spectrum space as well, it's always under threat from more commercial interests. All that DOES take money, believe it or not. Voluntary contributions like this DVD idea may help defray costs, if they are executed properly. Whether that is the case here is not something I care to debate, not having a dog in that particular fight and not having seen the video in question. I will say I have a bunch of their old videos from the 80's and 90's that we used in club outreach and public mall show efforts and they were quality product for their era. [RCSE] Re: Splatter
Oscillating frequencies (when two pilots stand close together with antennas up) is a problem in Europe on 35mhz. Dont know about 72mhz. It is mostly a problem on the ground but can also be a problem for models passing and with poor Rx's... My club also have a Aerospectra Channel Analyzer (programmed for 27-41mhz) and I have been using this for a good while now. The analyzer can detect this problem. It detects most problems we have (mostly poor Tx's) and have been a very good investment since we organize big events. We even rent it out for other clubs that have big events. But still I would love a Hobbico when/if it becomes available on 35mhz. It would be understanable for pilots in the club that comes for the peg. I would like the Hobbico channel checker to be on the peg-board while I still have the Aerospectra for more specific work Hilsen (Regards) Jojo www.grini.no Date: Mon, 23 May 2005 11:31:02 -0700 From: John Erickson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Tom Kallevang [EMAIL PROTECTED], John Derstine [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], Soaring List Soaring@airage.com Subject: Splatter Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This idea of a clean transmitter is an interesting problem. Re: [RCSE] Receiver Malfunctions after Contact with Power Lines
Not the same but anyhow... I am lucky to be alive. After a F3F competition last weekend Helge Borchert (German pilot) flew his Crossfire (flew nice btw..) and suddenly shouted for no contact. He went down far behind and while I flew a prototype Taifun my friend Espen asked if I heard a strange sound? I could not hear anything but a few minutes later while I was landing I heard the sparkling sound and it came from MY antenna on my JR 9303 radio (borrowed from Horizon hobbies for Nats). Holy macarony it was a thunderstorm building up and it was lightning around us. The electricity made me and my antenna a good ground object to go for so I landed immediately. Just after the landing a tornado formed after a big bang and Helge came back with his radio saying: Modell 1 wurden verandert... It had gone crazy by the sparkling electricity. Certainly, the incident could cause a nice surge of RF noise, but I'd expect it to be over within a second. And I wouldn't expect it to damage any R/C receivers more than 100 feet away, though a momentary glitch during the event wouldn't surprise me. And if the RF (EMP?) created by the crash really was strong enough to damage R/C receivers a ways away, I'd hate to see what it could do to the electric company's equipment, or any subscribers on that line, since they'd have a much more direct route. What sounds more likely is that the power lines (or insulators, or something else) were damaged, and now they're emitting RF noise (as power lines occasionally do under the right (wrong?) conditions) that could be causing you problems. Of course, problems caused by that wouldn't be restricted to planes that were at the field at the time of the incident.) Were the malfunctions just glitches _during_ the crash, or did they show up after? What sort of malfunctions are you talking about -- not working at all, glitching where there was none before, etc. ? I'd hate to have to do it, but it sounds like you should call the electric company and let them know what happened, if you haven't done so already. They really should at least take a look and make sure no damage was done, and they should be able to determine if they're emitting RF noise. (I guess they might also send you a bill for the inspection and/or damage -- I'm not sure how that sort of thing works. I guess the AMA insurance would cover it, however.) | Does anyone have knowledge of whether or how such a contact | with power lines might generate interference which would cause | a receiver some distance away to fail? I can't think of any common (i.e. happens often) source of a am EMP stronger than a lightning strike, and I've never heard of a lightning strike near a house damaging any R/C receivers in it if they weren't plugged into a charger or something. Re: [RCSE] OVSS and Line Breaks
In Sweden (and lately also Norway) they have used low power winches for quite a while now. They use regular F3B winches with extra resistors to form a pull of 20kg (apx 700oz or 44lb) on the line. This makes starts a bit more even for F3B models compared to RES models. And there will be no linebreaks unless the wind is very strong or it is damaged. They also try to use apx same drum size on all winches. Best of it is that no matter what model you have one can step on the pedal all the way. You dont need to be careful with those beginner RES-planes... Personally I feel that this is a good solution for most competitions. We have known for a long time now that resistors on F3B winches was a very good move to make. Although F3B winches are much more powerful than 20kg offcourse. For F3B and F3J (yes we use winches in some F3J comp.) we still use normal F3B force offcourse. Sadly I have never tried your US-style winches with braided line so cant comment on all issues. But will during Nats I guess ;-) Airplane ticket to Nats is ordered... You want to keep things moving a link only serves to slow things down. I think the FAI solution works great. Limit the power on the winches. The resistored winches cut the power down and then everyone is nearly identical in power. Now does this solve line breaks... somewhat... it certainly cuts it down a considerable amount if you lower the power and level the playing field. But breaks will still happen especially on windy days. In the ESL we noticed that new spools from Memphis twine had bad spots in it. After clearing the breaks, the lines rarely broke. We don't respool between contests any more, only when the line gets ragged. This is consistent with my experience with my own clubs and also retriever lines too. 3 years ago at the nats I hit the pedal and broke the line. before I got any tension. Fortunately I got another winch. But the no relaunch policy doesn't allow for bad retrieves, or a previous bad launch. What about someone who launches before you and pulls the knot to exterme. or stresses the ring. The no relaunch doesn't work. BUT neither does letting the person relaunch with all the markers in the air. Either let them launch again or relight the group. If you let them relight it must be point the plane to the ground and land... no dilly dallying anyone caught slowing up for a reading of air should forfeit their flight. Re: [RCSE] Receiver Malfunctions after Contact with Power Lines
Oh yes. Offcourse I thought about WC in Canada. But not the Tornado that took the tent. On practice days me and Aril (another Norwegian pilot) flew when a dustdevil formed. We heard many shouted land and hold on to your stuff. Both me and him headed straight for the devil and got kicked out a few times before we entered the center for some breathtaking lift. So yes I did think about it For those that wasnt there... http://www.f3x.no/f3j/2004/pictures9/Resize%20of%20P8050068.JPG http://www.f3x.no/f3j/2004/pictures9/Resize%20of%20P1010089.JPG Hilsen (Regards) Jojo www.grini.no - Original Message - From: Steve Meyer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Jo Grini [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Soaring@airage.com Sent: Tuesday, May 17, 2005 8:31 PM Subject: Re: [RCSE] Receiver Malfunctions after Contact with Power Lines Awesome pics, glad to hear you are safe. [RCSE] JR 9303 - Jojo lost his virginity
Ok I am not a virgin.. But in JR terms I think I am. All my model life I have been playing around with MPX Tx's (Though my first was a 2ch Sanwa). I have had Sprint, Combi 80 (still have this one as trainer), Royal, 2015, 3010, 3030, 4000 and currently own 2 EVO's THEN I was going to the Nats and needed 72mhz (we have 35mhz here in Norway) so I spent some bucks on a used crystal EVO and got GREAT service from Polk that sent me a synth Rx. But I realized I needed moreTx crystalsand turned to a friend I met at the WC F3J in Canada. John Diniz at Horizon Hobby ( http://www.horizonhobby.com/)proposed that I should try the JR 9303 and would send me all I needed. Wow! Now I could check out what JR feels is the best. And since I know some of the best have used it I felt confident that I might have a good thing going. You see - there is one thing I dont compromise on. I do not come to a competition unprepared. Since I cant use 72mhz on a regular basis here in Norway I will have to return the stuff but if I feel the 9303 has an advantage over my EVO I might do the switch. We will see... Anyhow it seems that JR really takes us sailplane guys serious and do step up for us when needed. So over to the shiny case I got in the mail today. It took only 7 days shipping to Norway so I started fidling with the switches and put it on charge while I surfed thru the airplane manual (seems I have the "A/S" version. airplane/sailplane). After 1/2 hour and some dinner I had to start fidling with the on/off switch also so I fidled more and took out a sailplane from the cellar... I took the worst one out there. At WC the South African team had got new Graupner MX-22's (same case as 9303) and strugled with programming. I bought one of the planes (Shongololo a copy of the SwedishRacemachine)they brought and discovered that it was NOT properly set up. So here I have a model with servo horn in all strange directions and a new radio that I have been fidling with for just 20-30min. Well to make a long story short the model is up and running and the timer says I did it before the radio had been on for 2 hours. I now have all the setup I need for F3J with 3 flight phases, camber control on the slider and a countdown timer on the training button. Even the name on the model is correct ;-O I have a qualifying competition this weekend so I dont think I will dare to use it this soon -but hey It sure does work and also: It seems to do what I need both for sailplane competition and I can fly my electric planes. Only thing I need to work out is how to use that training button to start my electric sailplane motors... Dont expect me to read ALL the messages on this list if you have any comments. But as always I try to keep up and enjoy the reading ;-) Hilsen (Regards) Jojowww.grini.no
[RCSE] Re: Things get thicker and thicker :-) in the context of wing servos :-)
I also did kind of that. Installed MS-X3 (MPX but same as Naro) in my Superior for both ailerons and V-tail some years ago. Ended up stripping both aileron gears on the first launch... Did you know that with full digitals all over the current consumption in a good F3B start is above 6amps?.. And on the turnaround they have meassured 120kg pull upwards! Is the HiTech superior to the others since it is 40% thicker? Funny stuff Walter :-) My kind of humor :-) Thicker is more durable in the case of the thin wing servos versus the 'usual' wing servos. Not much torque is actually needed for TD use if the linkage geometry is correct...optimizing the servos capabilities. So while thin 'works', thicker usually works longer :-). I know of a case of a contest being won in very windy conditons and the winning 3m moldie had HS55's on all surfaces. (was a test case for 'lightness' but ended up being the only plane the guy had left to fly that day) No zooms or harsh movements or landings obviously.
