hmmm interesting!
I saw that  program actually, and then saw that it only saved via

to be honest, with this setup, xmail server will be running as a

Remember that whatever software you use to fetch POP3 messages, you still
need to inject emails into the XMail queue, if you want XMail to deliver
 them.

wow. you assume big time.

ummm wild guess? ummm YEP!

this isn't the only mailling list I have been on.
please don't waste YOUR time, which I know is valuable, and MY time,
by assuming...
you know.. ass out of you, and ass out of me?

Yes I read the docs. I have xmail up and running on a windows box.
been in the IT industry for over 15 years.. *yawn* RTFM.. yea yea.
well i did...
i have it up and running, but for the likes of me, I can't find any
CLEAR ANSWERS.

hence... I know this may be a very alien concept for you Davide: I
thought i'd sign up to the mailling list to see if I can get some
direction.

wow, what a concept eh?
a mailling list so you can ask questions.

anyhow, enough of the rant (hey, you had it coming, since you made an
ass out of yourself).

so, I am humbling asking anyone in this mailling list, that is of
positive nature, if it IS possible to do the pop3 MANUAL retreival via
COMMAND LINE, to grap the emails from a remote POP3 account, very
simular to fetch mail. I don't want fetchmail, because I don't want
to install CygWin...

I want to do this manually, because I'm going to be setting up stunnel
to send AND receive emails MANUALLY every 10 minutes.

if anyone would be so kind as to point me to the right tab, or how to,
I would be greatly appreciated!

thank you!

2010-05-28 Thread William Ottley
Hi all,
I finally have xmail up and running, without getting any errors!
BUT, I now have the hard task of figuring out how to get the
functionality that I need.
Can anyone point me to the right areas that I need to understand to
get the job done?

I need to accomplish this:

#1 have a local machine act as a smtp to receive emails from 1 email
account. (the emails that are received locally will be from wordpress,
and an addon?
All other emails sent will come from the main mail server.
#2 have pop3 for that single email account
#3 do a MANUAL retrieval and sending of emails via command line.

if anyone sends an email (via wordpress) to the user via the local
server (where the smtp server is located), the user can pick it up via
pop3.
all other emails that are received or sent, will happen when a MANUAL
retrieval is done...

can anyone point me to the right direction on how to accomplish these tasks?

Don Drakes spamassasin filter works great on linux - spamassasin

dunno if you can use similar ideas on windows but...

Personally wouldn't consider a solution which outright rejects spam -
what is normally done at work is people filter flagged messages to their
deleted items. They are still there just in case (i.e. when someone
rings up) but can be easily removed.

[xmail] Re: spamassasin

2004-01-14 Thread William Denniss
It is pretty simple, I used a filter made by Don Drake who's on this
list, took me 10min max.

Be sure to install Pyzor and DCC (google...) - they are relatively
simple to install. Then enable checking for Pyzor, DCC and DNSBL's in
your spam assassin configs, fine tune your rules and you'll find nearly
all spam gets flagged with few false positives. Of course if your
server processes a metric ton of email per day then you'd probably not
want the added load but for only a few hundred per hour it's no problem.

I found the combination of Pyzor and DCC were able to catch most of the
emails that were slipping though before.

Cheers,

Will.

I am now using 1.16 and the filter does let my own domain emails go through
now (filters.in.tab) when using RETCODE 16 to stop processing, the oddball
item is that it still puts the email in the KEEP dir of XScanner so I then
have duplicate copies.

But it works, even despite this quirk, so now I am successfully not
filtering my own domain to domain emails =)

Then I tried sending it to my current filter, XScanner as such in

So far I am unable to get it to stop processing the next file, even though
exception.tab is called first in my filters.in.tab - so it continues to send

[xmail] Re: HEELP - mailserver has been hacked!!

2003-08-22 Thread William

I got a few 'bounced' messages this morning quoting emails that I never
sent out. Now, I'm tailing my smtp log and it appears somebody is using
several machines to connect to my server and send out messages:

Which would mean you have an open relay, not really a hacked machine. I
would change my management port from the default though, which is done via
the registry.

Could you please provide me with a bit more detail as to how to do this?
How
do I change the management port?

The XMail registry entry for the control port is -Cp (as an example).
Default is 6017 (as of 1.15, unless it changed)

This is in your HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE GNU XMAIL --

[xmail] XScanner.dat Retcode setting?

2003-07-28 Thread William

Is anyone using XScanner with XMail 1.15? I have not heard back from the
developer yet on how the Retcode is defined in the .DAT file and my attempts
have not succeeded.

It successfully catches emails in the .DAT file but it does not remove
them from the que, they reach the inbox as if no Retcode was passed on at
all.

In the filters dir, my domain.tab file contains the correct:
c:\xscanner\xscanner.exe c:\xscanner @@FILE @@FROM @@RCPT
Retcode

and XScanner is working, but no Retcodes (or none proper 97-100) are
being passed onto XMail.

2003-07-28 Thread William

I hate to appear to be contrary, but I just downloaded the file and had a
look at the source code included, and as near as I can tell, the 5th
argument (where you have Retcode) should be a string representation of
the numeric return code you want to use for rejecting messages (ie. 97).
Here is the relevant source code line:

All I want to know is the truth, if that what it turns out to be then =)

I will try it, however then there would be no 98, 99, 100 etc (?) and I
would think that this should be user selectable.

 You're using SA, aren't you ?

No, unfortunately it doesn't work on my 2k box. Looks like others have been
working on getting it going so I am going to follow that up.

Currently I am using XMail 1.10 because of my inability to get the codes
97-99 to set properly using XScanner filter, it would see the emails and
show them in my log, but not put them in my keep dir.

Win2k Server SP 4, XMail 1.10

I removed the entry, all I can think of is $p$g from DOS but I would
have no idea why that would be triggered here, my email with body of test
got deleted even... strange

Don't you have the source code ?

Yes, I'll take a peek. Sadly however my knowlege of C is cursory at best.

My current filter works very simply, with a code at the end of the string
defining my spam

contentfilter.def entry looks like so
example string blah blah#6 --- the spam score value

In the XScanner.c I see no entries for codes 97-99, 100 or etc, I was hoping
to get this one working because it has the ability to keep rejected emails.

Look at its doc, you can pass the return code inside the .tab file.

Thats rather what I figured, since thats how my current filter works now.

XScanner.txt leaves me with:
7. Check out documentation for return codes (97, 98 or 99).

So,

example spam string

becomes

example spam string#99

?

c:\xscanner\xscanner.exe[TAB]c:\xscanner[TAB]@@FILE[TAB]@@FROM[TAB]
@@RCPT[TAB]Retcode

Don't add a \ to the second argument!

where c:\xscanner\xscanner.exe is the full path to executable name and
c:\xscanner the directory where to find xscanner.dat file.

I had that exactly, and even used c:\xscanner dir structure to keep it
simple. The log file would show captures but nothing was put in the KEEP
dir, everything passed through even though logged due to an entry in
XScanner.dat defining it as spam. This is why I was always confused as to
where this 97/98/99/100 comes from, because I never see reference to it in
the actual filter program itself other than my old filter on 1.10

My attempts at getting 1.14/1.15 to work with filter systems was
unsuccessfull save for I believe autoreply.js

My assumptions were always that the filter passes on the code to XMail, but
again I see no codes in the XScanner.dat file.

You set the Retcode inside the .tab file and XMail will pass the same
value to xscanner.exe, that in turn will exit with such code in case it'll
find something. I didn't do that app though, you might want to bug the
developer eventually.

I will experiment more, thanks for taking the time to hold my hand through
this thing ;-)

Documentation is a bit light for me, so if I am stuck I will shot them an

[xmail] Re: java package

2003-07-01 Thread William Denniss

I'm not sure actually if JNI is what you want. Basically it lets you call C
functions (ie from a dll if you are using windows) from Java.

The idea of telneting in, ie. in java I guess using a Stream is a way you can
talk to the SMTP/POP processes of XMail for one.

To call the current XMail Admin command line tool you could do that with shell
calls form java - this is the simplest of the three.

If you want to write a simple java admin tool - use option three. If you do,
I can be your first user as I have been wanting such a tool :). Alas I have
zero time at the moment so I couldn't develop it, but I would be more than
happy to help with any questions if I can.

If you want some tool which can send emil or read pop email for whatever
reason use option 2 (I was going to do this as a way of downloading bulk
emails from a single remote server and delivering them to xmail user accounts
a bit like pop3links, but instead from 1 account). Again I don't have the
time to do it so I found another way. Option 2 requires you to bone up
pretty heavily on the RFC's too.

Option 1 I guess you would use if you wanted some sort of wrapper for XMail -
why you would need that i'm not sure. So I wouldn't consider the JNI, unless
you have somthing else in mind which would benifit from it :)

Cheers,

Will.

hence the reason for the idea. Plus, the ability to use it to create gui's
in other OS's. And probably the biggest goal is too give XMail even more
 helpers/tools/developement libraries :).

I am a beginner in the Java area, but I have written some pretty useful
stuff already. So... I have never worked with JNI, but I would probably
check into that first, since it sounds more useful than my other method of
telneting in. Probably more secure too? Faster?

I am actually pretty surprised that no one has created something like this
because I am sure other developers have thought about it? Hopefully I will
contribute back to XMail in the near future with this.

Oh, what a shame our cross platform support would be restricted to the

On that topic of Java, I thank you kindly for your advice, but I shall

Maybe I shall impart some advice to you, talking out of experience as a

require different programming tools to achieve them. A linux project would
not be suitable for .NET for example. If you wish to debate the merits of
using a particular programming language for a project, then by all means go
ahead. But at least try and present rational statements, preferably backed

I realized I had forgotten to put the * in front of the @ sign in the

Toby, filters have to pass a code onto XMail so that it knows what to do
with it. I still dont know how to get these working on 1.15 myself because I
am not positive what in the world sets a code.

I haven't tried it yet, but one of my current filters on 1.10 sets a sort of
code based on what I score something to be, it currently uses a 1-10
system so I am wondering if in the definitions if you change it to the
appropriate 97-99 if it will work, have not tried this yet though and got no
feedback unfortunately about what in the world sets a code and how the
system works.

So, I am still lost myself which is why I still use my 1.10

Odds are that AOL has subscribed to a DNSBL that lists dynamic IP
addresses, and your IP address is showing up in there. This means that
*nothing* you can do on your end will fix this - your only hope is getting
your ISP to assign you an address which is not listed in whichever DNSBL
that AOL is using.

There is at least one dialup.abuse.net (I believe) RBL subscription and they
must be using it or another.

e=20
would know about our little IP - I'll get it secure on Monday Which inde=
ed I=20
did. By Monday however we had been totally black listed. The problem is=
 of=20
course when you make it onto one of those lists - more spammers use your=20
server because it's listed publicly.

XMail SMTP is rediculessly easy to secure - and I knew how to do it on th=
e=20
Friday it was mear lazyness that caused me not to worry untill Monday. I=
=20
would suggest that the relevent line of the readme be increased in font s=
ize=20
and made red ;-)

On that note - I have some praise for AOL (now nobody has ever heard me g=
ive=20
them praise before). Unlike many mailservers who rely on these black lis=
ts -=20
AOL actually conducts their own test of your mail server EVERY time you s=
end=20
them an email. Ie. - it went like this. 1. email bounces. 2. I secure =
the=20
server. 3. email sends. As opposed to any blacklist (dns or otherwise)=20
related blocking which had a 2a. step - wait a week...

Cheers,

Will.

[xmail] POP3 Authentication error for Outlook 2000

2003-03-04 Thread William Denniss

Hi,

I have just recentally installed XMail on our office linux box, and it is=
=20
doing it's job nicly (as an SMPT server, inhouse emails, and connecting t=
o=20
our offsite internet server using POP syncronisation). However for some=20
reason Outlook 2000 clients are unable to connect - the error returned is=
 a=20
password authentication one. It works perfectally with Outlook XP - but =
alas=20
we have some '95 computers here which can't run Outlook XP. Is this a=20
general problem? is there some fix?

Thanks for the software though, so far it has been very impressive.

1) - I try both full email and just username, neither works.
the username only works fine in OL XP and Kmail...

2) This check is not enabled.

3) I agree. but alas you have to give the people what they want.. :(

The exact error message is: There was a problem logging onto your
mail server. Your User Name or Password was rejected. Server Responce:
'-ERR Invalid auth or access denied'.

I am assuming people have gotten OL 2000 to work with xmail before?

Thanks,

Two things are possible here :

 1) You are not using the full email address

 2) You enabled the SSL check

 And, if you want :

 3) Outlook *kind of suck*

I've tried that one too, I'll try again.

Single I believe is what was in the examples

[xmail] Re: Email Virus Scanning question

2002-10-10 Thread William

Using MS Outlook to retrieve and send email, I can see Norton Anti-Virus
scan outgoing and incoming email messages. It looks like it is watching
over SMTP and POP ports.

This is because (all but one that I can recall) most anti virus scanners
actually download/send the mail for you, it acts as a gateway on your own
machines. Every once in awhile Eudora gets goofed up by Norton, you will
find in your mail client changed mail server settings, 127.0.0.1 instead of
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx etc

So since Norton knows how to handle one account at a time I'm going to guess
you are out of luck, although it can still detect a virus in the mail server
directory of course, but I dont think you want to set it to scan every
minute, and is likewise not reliable anyway.

Forwarding

2001-07-12 Thread Anne William

Hello,

Well, after all this thread, and telling me that I'm doing wrong
things ;-) it seems that simple forwarding to an
external domain account isn't possible with XMail, or you need to change the
U account to M (thx to Mr.Olivier).

What about, as I seen in a previous mail server, creating in the
user account folder a file called forward.tab that will have this form:

redirect@domain Job

I don't put tab this time, but between 2 , but you have it grin ! :-)

Job would be for example:

D = delete message after forwarding
K = keep message in mailbox after forwarding

Thank you for your consideration.

I don't know if I've done the right procedure, but I cannot get it
working. I stopped before Xmail. I've created an alias in aliased.tab like:

t-online-frtabdosomaxtab[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then restarting XMail.

I would like that all mails that comes for [EMAIL PROTECTED] to be
redirected to [EMAIL PROTECTED], but I can't get them to be
forwarded. Where can be the problem ?

Thank you.

AW

Antirelay, IP and authentification

2001-06-27 Thread Anne William

Hello,

Here again I'm lost.
I would like to restrict SMTP input like this:

All connections from our class C is allowed to use the
SMTP without authentification. This is clear with SMTP.IPMAP.TAB.

Now if someone connects from another class, he needs to authenticate to
relaying. But I don't want to setup this for all our users one by one, can it is
possible to tell XMail to perform this?

For now I'm rejected from an external ISP because of

0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 DENY 1

In SMTP.IPMAP.TAB. If I suppress the line, the SMTP is wide opened,
too dangerous.

Thank you again.

Anne.

Check smtprelay.tab, if a connection comes from outside of the subnets
listed then they have to authenticate to relay. You don't want to use
smtp.ipmap.tab or you will restrict other mail servers from connecting
and delivering mail to your server.

Ah yes ok. That's working. Fine and thank.
Have a great day.

Re: POP3 problem

How did You add accounts inside XMail ?

With mkusers from a text file (around 150 accounts).
mailusers.tab seems to be normally created as well as mailboxes in
domains/t-online.fr folder.

Re: POP3 problem (bis)

I've already try this before asking; I setup XMail POP3 server onto 9110 because I
already have a POP3 server running on the same machine. The error I gave you was:

-ERR Invalid auth or access denied

I must say I enabled POP3 log, and it shows only account for login and
no errors, when I gave one. Is this normal?

I must admit that one log file, maybe only for detailed errors should be a
good thing that can help users to know a little more where to track
problems.
