This is a year old G4 Powerbook. Of course, I am hoping that nothing goes
wrong with it, with or without Applecare
mechanism.
My Lombard's 6gb drive was replaced by a 5400 rpm 20gb
drive with similar results (same 8mb cache).

before I was unable to do in 10.3.6, but which now
works perfectly.

Don't get me wrong, I wrangled with the decision for a while too, but in the
end, I'll use this PB for a few more years if it lasts (seems like it will),
but if it died, I'd rather get a new one if the cost of repair was too high.

the Pismo.
If you don't have a card I could loan you one for the transfer.

Honestly I don't know. I wiped the hard drive and did
a clean install of Panther as soon as the Lombard
arrived, as I have no use for OS 9 and my daughter is
being raised strictly on OS X
powerbooks (520s, 1400a and other G3s) in
SCSI disk mode. When all my extended family has got newer powerbooks
(Dad just got a 12 G4) I'll be able to stop supporting the older ones.
Would Classic mode have the same SCSI support as OS 9?

I don't believe so. I haven't plugged anything into
it yet, but in System Information when I click the
item for SCSI it just says No Information.
I've been completely OSX since I switched from Windows
last year, so I don't have any SCSI devices to try.

My 12 G4 with AE also works perfectly on my friend's
original graphite Airport network.

of using your Sawtooth instead of a hardware base station is range, and I
don't know if it is an actual deficit or not. Of course, you also have the
Sawtooth turned on, making noise, guess that could also be a disad.

. Panther is a bit slow to boot and doesn't
automatically wake when I open the lid, but it does wake reliably with a
press of any key.
For a basic office-productivity machine, it really gives up very little to
my much newer G4.
