I was able to solve the problem with some help from postfix-users list
and from the postfix documentation.
There were two parts of the solution.
Mutt needed to be be told to force use of envelope
On my laptop, I use mutt with postfix for sending e-mails, and
fetchmail for receiving them. Postfix is setup to relay mails through
gmail. I am the only user on the computer and all mails originating
from the computer are sent from my account.

In the past, I have used scim with openoffice to type documents in
Hindi. The last time I did it was about a year ago when my machine was
running Ubuntu 6.10 or 7.04. Since then I have upgraded it to Ubuntu
7.10 and more recently to Ubuntu 8.04.

We have our own HCL MiLeap to compete with EEEPC. For roughly similar
