RE: [313] carl craig presents abstract funk theory
james boylan: Forgive my ignorance, but who's George Kranz? He's a nut german drummer who did the crossover pop classic "Din daa daa" in '83. It's been sampled a million times. If you ever hear a dance record where the guy sings "din daa daa" it's from his original tune:) He did some other singles after that but better to forget them straight. Din daa daa video still aires sometimes on educated music channels. It's the guy with the funny hair banging drums and then "singing" the same notes he played. At one point he jumps over his drum kit, all in beautiful 80's video quality fashion:) -Proffit _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] transmat first, second, third pressing??
armin holzgethan: could someone please outline the differences in the the artwork of the different pressings, especially of the first two? i know the last pressing has black labels etc. and what about fragile? two pressings? A good resource is Ebay, there's sometimes lots of pictures of different Transmat label graphics. I know the very first pressing of "Nude photo" is a plain silver label w/ black lettering & Transmat logo, and the artist name is indeed "RYTHIM IS RYTHIM", not "Rhythim" with an H like the later pressings... I have a feel that the later releases usually had Alan Oldham's graphics, like Strings of life has neat drawn pic. I've also seen different colours in the same graphics, like Beyond the dance printed in brown (!!!) colour and super cool red-to-green fading graphics... K-Alexi's "All for Lee-sah" first pressing had cool Oldham drawing of a lady (printed on white label), and the second pressing had a somewhat decadent red graphics I don't know what to think of. The black label ones, "Classics" are the latest yes... These experts on this board should make a site where all the Transmat graphics were presented. It's strange actually, that no one (?) hasn't done that already, a dedicated Detroit classics web page...? -Proffit _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] Save the vinyl info
Michael Kim: but there are so many horrible records coming out and so few pressings >of good ones in comparison. why not just make MORE copies of good >records? i don't think you'll have problems selling reissues of >classics, look how fast Cybotron - Clear went. Yeah, but that just shows you how good crossover record Clear is, everybody buys it: RAP/Hip Hop folks buy it, Miami Bass & breaks people buy it, techno listeners buy it, hell, even your Polka loving aunt buys it! But I don't think Hip Hop people would buy reissues from Retroactive back-catalogue, or other Detroit classics for that matter. There really is no room for a large amount of old records to be re-released, I think by now there's enough Transmat classics leftovers in the world that we don't need to release them in another 15 years. Some records are purposelly not been re-released. Retroactive is a classic example I think. I don't think there isn't any problems they couldn't solve to get them re-released, but Carl knows his cult-status is largely built on those releases, and there's the tickling sensation about having people pay crazy money for your releases. Besides there really isn't that much people who'd buy them (Retroactives) all the time, maybe 1000-2000 copies would sell quickly, but then they wouldn't be rare anymore and people would move on to other things. Another thing is the distributors. They can say to you "this much is going to sell, we won't buy more that this" no matter how good a record is. i've seen horrible records sit in shelves for years. a pressing plant >may be pressing it, but if nobody buys it, somebody's got to pay for >that. We all have seen the lonely crap records, and it's a sad, sad sight:) The label will eventually pay for it when the distributor won't buy their stuff anymore and they might end up with 1000 copies of crap release in their garage. also, look at how many Swedish imitation records come out. they sound the same, no new ideas, more than half of the Swedish sounding >records are garbage. i mean, do these records really need to be >released constantly? They found an idea (copying Mills) and made a formula out of it. Of course there's no need for all those releases, but that's what brings the food on the table, it's no secret at all. It's so sad the state of TECHNO, the early 90's innovative years seem light years away. I mean who of the old guys listens to "techno" anymore? No one, they've all gone house or to more sophisticated genres. i really wish record pressing plants would concentrate on making more copies of good records, and reissuing good older records and >classics that they KNOW will sell, rather than pressing the latest >record that nobody will remember or care about two weeks after its >release. In an ideal world that might work but at the end it's discrimination and fascism, restricting what people can release and what not. But the pressing plants live by the capitalist golden rule; to make more money, and they don't care if all they pressed was bird singing nature records as long as the customers pay. yeah, but how many other people here are sick of listening to 50 bad records to find 1 good one? That's why I called it the "jungle", because you have to wander thru the bushes and all the bad sh*t before you find a new rare species or the golden treasure:) -Proffit _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It's worse than some > of the Trax pressings. Sakke: I only have the repress, and it sounds like it was mastered from really cracky and scratchy vinyl. I have the 2nd pressing (red graphics) and I think there was some noise on it too... gotta check to make sure. But yeah, the noise in that recording is classic, check DJ Hell's X-mix for example! I also remember one Baby Ford mix he did in '94, and the record he used had the exact same noise, so my thought is that Transmat must have used the original lacquer or metal stampers to make the later pressings, which is a BAD mistake! Never do that. If someone with the original 1st white drawn label pressing could inform us if the noise is on that too, so then we'd know if it's the mastering... Also: I have the R-tyme 12" as Transmat classic pressing and there's some crazy noise on that too, and some other Transmat classic had a "ghost" effect on it (when a reel-to-reel tape is not played for a long time the magnetic particles attach to tape next to them, sort of copy themselves on tape, so you'll hear the coming music in advance, very silently though.). Derrick should transfer all his classic analog material to digital media immediately. -Proffit _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] Save the vinyl info
fabrice Lig: I talked several times to some people from Vinyl pressing factories and eachone told me that they are really really busy and always too much records to press. Michael Kim: how about cutting down the number of bad releases instead? ;) I think cutting down the number of releases would eventually be catastrophic for this music scene. Factories would have to close down their businesses when there wouldn't be enough work (records to make) and thus cause the pressing prices go higher and higher, making it useless to release this music on vinyl when at the end a record could cost you twice as much as it does now. Only the strongest pressing plants would survive, and eventually there'd be only 2 or 3 pressing plants IN THE WHOLE WORLD. Not much choice there. I think this effect is already showing the way average record price has been steadily rising in the last 15 years, and the amount of new dance releases per month should now be higher that ever? It's a sort of Amazon jungle this "dance" music business; you have to have as many species as possible in order to keep the ecological balance. -Proffit _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

No, just basic sites with extremely good looks and lay-out, with additional small gimmicks to make it interesting. Re: [313] any leads on 12" covers?
Kent williams: I really want to print covers for my next record release, but the places I've found have been really expensive, and don't really do what I want which is to do matte printing on recycled paperboard. Anyone have any leads? (i.e. Not Ross Ellis or Dorado Press) Basically you have to manufacture a lot of copies (2000 and upwards)of a 12" single release before it makes any sense financially to have custom made jackets, at least that's what I've noticed when I've fantasized about my own label. In LPs it's more easy to hide the costs because you can sell it for more to the distributor. I'd say ask all possible pressing plants (both in US and Europe)if they are willing to manufacture jackets (covers) only, without having to press the records there as well (unless if that's what you want), and what the cost would be. Though I doubt the price range don't chance that much. Gramofonove Zavody/GZ digital media in Czech Republic comes to mind, it's probably the cheapest you can find: http://www.gzcd.com/ If you REALLY believe in yourself and the talent you got, another option is to manufacture a huge amount of covers at once, say like 5000 copies, for your future releases. If you press 500 copies per one release, that way you would have covers for 10 releases. This is risky. Unless you're Moby or Josh Wink, if the tracks ain't slammin and the label ain't happening, you could end up with a roomful of useless covers:) -Proffit _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] colored vinyl
ryan burns: today one of my friends told me that colored vinyl is more prone to wear and scratches. compared to black vinyl. im a little skeptical >of this. does anyone know the truth to this matter? When listening to those coloured pressings on DJAX-UP-BEATS one could come up with the conclusion that colour vinyl is weaker in quality, yes. But I think it might have more to do with the chemical mixture of the vinyl used, and the quality of the actual pressing records are made. Vinyl, as I understand, is colourless as it is, the black colour is just added so that people could see the tracks they're playing. Maybe that black colour has qualities that the other colours lack, and the result is cleaner sound...? But I've heard both perfect colour vinyls and then those Djax-like pressings (strangely the transparent, "normal" vinyl on Djax sounds crappy aswell, so...?). The same goes for picture discs: some play without noise and others are painful to listen... and pic discs should be more difficult to make, so there the errors are somehow understandable. -Proffit _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Johnson & Armando - 3rd Dimension Djax-Up-200 Paul Johnson - Psycho Kong (2x12") -Haven't got the first one, Foreign music, but the double he did with Armando and Psycho Kong kick ass. Psycho Kong ('94) is of course based on the arcade game, using those Blip Blop-sounds that we all loved. Knowing Paul's musical history I bet it's safe to say Foreign music is good. Djax-Up-162 Glenn Underground - Future Shock Djax-Up-194 Glenn Underground - The Unborn (green 12") -these are still the same style he started with, Chicago deepness in the ORIGINAL style, similar to his E.P. on Chicago underground for example. Lil' OFF-TOPIC
I have a question, which in a sort of way is related to this list, so don't go jumpin on my back for this: I'm thinkin' of putting old mixes (WBMX) to web, and I'll have to transfer them from OLDER tapes. I was thinkin' of using either Sound Forge XP or Cool edit 2000 (can't afford PRO) to do the transfer. I'll need to adjust and fix the sound a little bit; add a crisp high-end, put fade-ins & outs, and at the end normalize the whole BIG sample (think of 45mins of audio). I'm going to put both MP3 and Real Audio formats available for downloading. I think Cool edit has MP3 & RA recording available in the program itself, but in Sound Forge it's available as an option? Also, Sound Forge has the Noise reduction-plug-in available for $300 or so, Cool edit has same kind of "Audio clean-up" available for $50... Is it stupid to ask which one is better? If you have experiences with these progs, ANY ADVICE appreciated and please mail me privately!!! Thanks, Proffit _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.

Jochem Peteri: the person who is generally credited for being the one who invented dj->ing is kool herc I guess Thomas Edison could be credited as being the "first DJ". Basically anyone who's played tracks after tracks with 2 turntables in the '20s, '30s or '40s can be that "first" person, but I believe Grasso was the "first" to actually beat-mix 2 records, as Jay Cee wrote: "...Francis Grasso, a pioneering club disc jockey credited with first mixing records together in the late 1960's by matching their rhythms.." -I don't know if any of the Rock'n'Roll or Blues DJs tried to match tempos in the 50's??? What records/labels you mean by "Schranz"? I would think there are people that really HATE the Cologne minimalism sound. Cologne's acid sound is a whole different story... For me the germans kept the original attitude of the early Chicago (and later Detroit with Tresor etc.) sound and production values better than, say, the folks in England. Again, I don't know what the fiction/fact-ratio is in those interviews, especially with the early pioneers, but it's fun to read Vince Lawrence's stories about how he and Jesse Saunders were spending the proffits of those early house records on synths and prostitutes:) Just like I imagined it to be. Very interesting are the stories about the clubs all the name DJs played, the whole competetive attitude between them seems like light years away compared to this day!!! It explains so much about the history and evolution of this music. I think the author Jonathan Fleming is a photographer specializing in the club scene, and that way he got into writing this book...? Rare "On and on" by Jessie Saunders, "It's a mystery" by Phase II and other house gems can be found on the HOUSE comp. There were 4 CDs in both series, each disc has 10 tracks. I think these releases were made strictly for cashing in; the makers propably paid Sherman some money and he handed some tapes and records to them and said: "do what you wanna...". Re: [313] Cerrone
Cyclone Wehner: I've been listening to heaps of Cerrone of late - I think he's the >bomb... ...Anyway, what are Cerrone's definitive albums? Yes I like his work too. All the stringy stuff and his Kongas project too. I have an LP, a soundtrack which name I don't remember since it was something french, but it's something like '78/'79 period, and it has a killer synth bass-track, from where the bassline was ripped directly to EDC's "No pills" on Tink! records. Was Orlando Voorn behind that EDC project? Anyway, all he's done is used a different sound but the bassline is the same. And of course Cerrone's record covers are classics in their own right, with nude women and our "hero" in his pyjama!!! Or is that a karate suit? However, in "Cerrone's paradise" LP cover, there's a naked woman on top of a fridge (!?), and on the floor there a bottle with some white powder in it!!! Some disco nose candy perhaps? ;) Proffit _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. I got older and jaded with the music b/c I knew punk music one way: in my youth. i grew up to a certain >sound...and it changed. its the common saying "their first album is >their best." You're suggesting that people actually "grow" INTO a sound, be it Punk, Detroit techno or whatever. It continues: ...about 6 months ago...i heard the soundz of techno. it amazed me. it enlightened meand it took me away. but...i cant get into alot of >the older detroit stuff why? b/c its not the style i was introduced >to... I don't agree with you that one has to be "introduced" to a certain sound or style, and that the first encounters with any new musical style are the best or strongest you can have. Of course there's a special nostalgia for it, remembering the "good ol'days", but it has nothing to do with how good music is. Or what you may or may not like. I wasn't listening to classic Detroit Techno when it first came in the 80's (I started in the early 90's), but I like it A LOT. I don't have any special nostalgia for it, but nevertheless I find the music's depth, energy and innovation outstanding. I understand the importance of this music, as well as any other style's importance in the chain of musical culture. I listen to 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's music and find amazing pieces of work from all genres, all the time. I find this philosophy that "every generation has it's idols" disturbing. People are not computers where you download a certain operation system every other year (=musical "trends"), and once you've passed your youth you're stuck with the music you listened to. Of course not. Music is culture, and culture has the ability to survive thousands of years, there's no sell-by date in it, it doesn't lose it's energy like a battery. I think the fact that you might not like most of the D-techno has more to do with the fact that you like more energetic music. Maybe D-techno hasn't got the "bang" enough for you or something...?
