All,

Words can not express how both my son and I feel with the expressions of caring
that this group has shown the both of us.

We are now both home, in some pain, but doing well.

My new kidney is doing better then the doctors expected at this stage. Let's
say I am not the norm, but those who know me know that is very true.

If you would like to write my son, (one day he might follow me into the world
or Remedy) his address is arich...@richter-home.net. He has been reading your
emails and was very touched by the love shown by this great group of people.

Well off to take a pain pill or two (sorry no sharing).

Take care and be well,

Howard

17th

All,

I apologies for posting something to this list that is not Remedy related. It
was the only way that I could think of to contact all of the people I have
worked with in the world of Remedy.

I know that in my 16 years of working with the AR system, I have crossed paths
with a number of the members of this great list and I just wanted to let that
at 8:30am the 17th my 23 year old son will be donating his kidney to me.

He graduated from college in December (with a degree in IT security) he has put
his life on hold and spent his time helping my wife and I as we struggle with
the loss of my kidney functions (due to some RA meds I was on in the 90s). We
do dialysis at home, so I can work fulltime and he sees my struggles every day.

I know that we all think our children are unique and will always do the right
thing, but Andrew is the example of that.  How many of us would in truth change
our lives forever for someone else? He is doing this with humor and a desire to
get his old man (me) off of that darn dialysis machine. Words cannot describe
how proud I am of him. In a lot of ways he has set the tone on how my wife’s
and I should handle this challenge we are going through.

So if you have a minute on the morning of the 17th, think a good thought for me
and my son.

Take care and keep well,

Howard

Unfortunatly I keep getting the following

UpdateDataSchemaEntry: AR API returned error during ARSetEntry rc = 2

I guess I need to know which fields are required when loaded from AIE.

It's customary to precede any employment related postings with the keyword
JOB: at the start of the subject line. Post each opportunity just ONCE. The

the more welcome your postings will be.

As for finding Remedy consultants... Uh... Just keep typing here :-)

Re: Localized views

2012-02-21 Thread Louise Van Hine
You might want to reinstall, Wirasat, and I'll tell you why.  The stack
installer has just put in a UTF-8 database, or converted yours to UTF-8.  If
you didn't want UTF-8 then you''ve got one whether you like it or not, to
support 2 byte characters.  And this may present problems if you have other
applications or the ARS Server is running in non-unicode.  Yes the stack
installer is a great time saver, but it was said by the pope of Remedy himself
that it does not fit all installations and you are best doing a
product-by-product install if you don't want an all-language localizations.
I've done it, yes it takes about 8-10 hours total with babysitting, but you'll
get only what you want.  Feel free to phone me if you want more details.

Re: BMC (do they really do best practice? do you?)

2012-02-03 Thread Louise Van Hine
Hope you don't mind if I nitpick, but anyone who has gone through ITIL v. 2
Foundation training should know that Best Practice has been supplanted by
Good Practice once a Best Practice has been implemented into a production
environment and becomes Standard Operating Procedure.  If that has changed (or
if BMC-UK hired an uninformed ITIL v.2 Foundation trainer and they've backed
away from the term) please would someone let me know so I don't keep sounding
like a fool?

You contact support it is fixed, and they do not care what the solution is...
They do not put it into an RKM, they do not share the information to their

I am finding lots of customer support sites like this..  I would think.. this

Folks,

We are playing with a sandbox for ITSM 7.604p2 running on Windows 2008, SQL
2008 and Tomcat.

I can see that most dialogs got a incorrect windows size. The end user can
scroll horizontal and vertical at times just a few millimetre in other dialogs
a bit more. Most of the time all fields and buttons are within the window. It
just looks tacky - badly implemented. It can quickly be fixed by resize the
windows size within Developer Studio. Who got time doing that for all the
dialog?

BMC QA is normally better then this? Testing with different browsers makes
hardly any difference. Can this be easily fixed?

You just create your own phase names by typing them in the field instead of
using the menus.  Then those phase names are available in the Mappings form.

I'm not sure I fully understand what you are trying to do but I'll give

 it a try:

If you are trying to deploy two implementation approvals, the way to do

that is by changing the approval level in the approval mappings

themselves, not the approval processes.  The first implementation

approval will fire at 0 and the second will fire at 1, and so on.  The

approval process will have the same phases. Because the definition of

Implementation approval is that this is the last stage of approval

before implementation.  You can have as many levels of approval as you

need 0, 1, 2, 3 etc. and the next level will not be invoked until the

 previous approval is completed.

One might just as easily ask the question why did they make State Transitions
'data driven' with its own table when ITSM 7 came along and then tell you that
you can't turn them on and off?  I think the answer is - BIG WHOOPS.

We use TEC (Tivoli Enterprice Console)- Migrating to Netcool/Ominbus as the
correlation application for all events whether node_down(server), monitoring
process/filesystem on server, databases, 4D-jobs, monitoring the network,

runmacro - and generate tickets.  Omnibus has a remedy gateway, that tickets
are managed from within the tool/gui, you can send to Remedy automatically

restoring DB from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008

2010-05-03 Thread Louise Van Hine
Hi List,

Has anyone done a database refresh (restore) from a SQL 2005 instance under the
covers to a SQL 2008 DB?  BMC is saying that this is not supported, but we have
done this into our TEST and DEV systems and now have refreshed our DEV with
production which is still on SQL 2005, and are about to perform the ARS upgrade
to 7.5 and then ITSM from 7.0.3. to 7.6.

Has anyone done this in a production environment?  So far everything looks
okay, our CMDB relationship viewer is happy, our consoles are happy, we had a
bit of a glitch with initially connecting but that was because the
configuration had a connection setting wrong initially - that got corrected and
regression tests seem to be passing.

Many thanks for any and all comments,

If the user is trying to progress a change to Assigned or In Progress do any of
his assigned groups have the Change User permissions?  I haven't got the matrix

needs to be in the assignment group to be allowed to change an Infrastructure

I think that if you post a job requirement for someone to do performance
tuning and development, you are going to need a developer. No? Is that
what participate in development activities and Adhere to all relevant

someone to do development and you want to pay them for being an admin then
just say My customer is too cheap to pay for a developer and will someone
take less money like you did last time with the midrange developer salary
with a job description that requires a seasoned technical lead. And that is
going to be tough to do when you require a security clearance too. There is
only a subset of developers with security clearances, and the rates aren't

Re: SLM Milestones Not Using Business Time?

2009-09-16 Thread Louise van Hine
If you haven't gotten a reply to this already, Jon, the 7.1 SLM does not use
business time - it uses business entities and time segments. You CAN use
Business Time to set an escalation time in your form (HPD:Helpdesk or
CHG:Change or whichever record you need to set your targets on) however you
would have to write code to process the estimated time, so it is sort of a
hybrid solution.

There is a KB article on defining business entities and time segments with
your SLM targets:

KM article 20003302

If you can't find it on the BMC site I'll try to hunt it down myself. My
particular issue was getting the off-hours offset for multiple time zones,
which required setting up multiple business entities all with different time
zone offsets. I finally did do it, but I wrote a hybrid solution for it.
But it does work!

Jon Chau wrote:

 Hello Listers,

Based on my experience, it appears that milestone actions that fire off of
service targets in SLM do not use business time. Example - I have a
milestone action that sends a notification 300% of Goal time from start.
Even though business time segments are configured to be available only
Monday-Friday from 8:00AM - 5:00PM, the action still gets sent out during
 the weekend.

Is this how it is supposed to work? If so, how would I configure my
milestone actions to not fire during the weekend/unavailable times?

 Thanks,
 Jon

Re: Anybody running their prod system on VMWARE?

As far as I am aware, VMWare platforms are considered partially supported by
BMC, and last I spoke with them about it, do not recommend VMWare for
production systems because they may not be able to assist with a problem that
is based in VMWare rather than ARSystem.

However, that being said, an architect I have worked with recently who knows a
lot about the underlying architecture of VMWare says that it wouldn't be an
issue if you spec the right hardware, memory etc.  Which is sort of what Rick's

The dreaded MS-Office/User Tool 7.0.1 bug

2009-07-31 Thread Louise van Hine
In reference to Defect SW00257321 that I have had more than one experience
with (User Tool 7.0.1 patch 2 corrupts MS Office), the discussion here and
the technical bulletin all referred to the Uninstall creating the
corruption. Is there a corruption issue that occurs under non-uninstall
conditions? Because a colleague here said that there have been two
incidents of corruption of MS-Office when the default Home directory was
selected which triggered a corruption of MS-Office without having
uninstalled anything.

BMC's Knowledge Base is singularly unhelpful, KM-1007962 simply says if your
User Tool installation corrupts your MS Office, then reimage the PC. Thanks

Re: logic limit on shared workflow?

Sorry I wasn't clear, I am concerned about whether there is a performance
degradation or a hard limit on the number of forms that can be
attached/share a group of 120 links and about 20 filters, and you've
answered the part about number of forms, now the only concern is whether the
same workflow shared by 50 forms causes a significant decrease in
performance.

Thanks!

 - size of an integer
 - date/time field after 2038
 - number of filters in a single operation, though the limit can be changed
 - duration the arserver waits on the db server to return

logic limit on shared workflow?

2009-07-06 Thread Louise van Hine
Has anyone ever run into a logical or performance limit on shared workflow?
The sizing I am talking about is 150 objects (mostly active links, a few AL
guides and a couple of dozen filters), and 75 forms. Most of the workflow
consists of shared buttons and screen control, the filters do mainly creates
and a few modifies to subforms.

I did see an earlier message on the list regarding the use of $SERVER$ and
$SCHEMA$ keywords in AL actions slowing down the server, but are there other
logical limits that anyone knows about?

Platform ARS 7.0.01 Patch 7

Thanks!

SLM 7.0.3 Yikes - Unavailability Problem

2009-06-19 Thread Louise Van Hine

The manual says if you configure hours as unavailable in a Business Time
Segment and added it to your Business Entity, they will not be measured in
target measurements. I have created a Business Entity which I added to the Goal
and Cost tab, and when it attaches to my incident, the milestones create just
as if there were no unavailable hours intervening.  Is there some magical
limitation in the business entities that make it so that the SLM forgets to
stop measuring?  Or a bug I don't know about?  It is the older version of SLM,
and I'm wondering whether that is it.

Yes, I've verified that I don't have another field in my Data Sources, and have
rebuilt my target just to be sure of it.

Seriously, though, from an accounting standpoint they have to be written off, so I would involve your accounting department in this discussion, to be sure that you are tracking them the same way they are, which might come in handy during audit time.

sorry I posted the wrong link - here's a good general spec doc.  There are also
many other samples available publically.

www.processimpact.com/process_assets/srs_template.doc

It can be easily adapted to Remedy applications.  What I do in the
workflow-specific area is break it down as follows:

Form

Links

Filters

Menus

Guides

For each form that gets modified.

Re: ARERR [311] Field ID is not related to this form : 200000020

2009-05-30 Thread Louise Van Hine
I did a search on the field number, cross referencing 'ARS' and came up with
the following link:

http://communities.bmc.com/communities/message/80194#80194

The label for field 20020 is 'Name', at least in this particular instance
referenced in the message above.

that might help narrow the search.

Since you've searched the field database table and all the form tables, it's
time to direct your attention to workflow.  Can an active link or filter refer
to a field ID and without that reference appearing in a log?  Of course.  This
is Remedy.

If I were in your shoes, I'd export a definition dump of all my workflow, and
then open it in a text editor (plug for Vim and gVim here) and search for the
field ID.  Now you need to play master detective and start the process of
elimination.  No matter where you find the field ID, open up the workflow
object in the Admin tool and start editing.  It could be lurking in a set
fields action, a get fields query, a run if qualification, a PERFORM-ACTION
process, etc.

If you open up that workflow definition file and find
nothing, cast your net farther and dump all your forms into a def file.  An
orphan field ID could be hiding in a table field query.

If you strike out after all that, then maybe the problem is local.  Delete all
your ARF and ARV files, and log back in to your AR Server.  Try doing the same
operations from a different PC.  Try it from Mid Tier.

The nice thing about Remedy is the possibilities are practically endless.

Is any additional workflow being triggered on Display, Window Open, Search
etc.. If so, perhaps one of those is referencing that field.

 Dear List,

I have a form (Form A) with 20,000 records.  I can open the form in the
 client User tool,
and run an unqualified query and retrieve all records.
On Form B and C I have buttons that call Active Links, which are supposed
to open particular records in Form A.  But instead I get the above error-
 usually.

On Form B there is a character field, and a button that calls a link that
opens the single record in Form A that matches the character field.  That
 button/link works.

If  I click a button that should display 35 records I get the error..  But
I can display each of the 35 records one at a time by pasting the value in
the character field and clicking button that opens the matching record.

I checked the BMC Knowledge Base and found an entry about an “embedded
query.â€・  20020 is the “Nameâ€・ fieldid in the Asset Management

module, which we have.  So somewhere in our set-up there must be a
reference to this “Nameâ€・ field.   But I’ve checked the Database data
for every field on the form, as well as the form itself.

There is no error or reference to 20020 in the Active Link, Filter, or
SQL logs. There are no tables with references to 20020 .

 Any suggestions?

Thanks, Louise.  Did you uninstall between tries, or just run the install
script again...and again?

BTW, one of those arcane problems is that the uninstall script for CMDB does
not run.  Neither does the Add/Remove programs.  Maybe it's just me, but I
would think that if I ran a software department, and we completely changed the
installer methodology, that testing the snot out of that new methodology prior
to release would be a prudent thing.  But, maybe that's just me.

You can also use the LAN EndPoint class.
I actually prefer the LAN Endpoint class instead of the IP EndPoint class for
this situation, since the LAN EndPoint has the MAC Address; you can use the
Group Address field for the subnet mask; another useful field is the Alias
Addresses, in which you can store multiple virtual IPs.

I believe the IP Endpoint class is intended to document things like IP

unless you know that the device will only have one (or some maximum number of)
IP address(es).  As noted in someone else's reply, there is a field for domain

I wanted to know from those who have done some mapping of network hardware and
devices, how you map various and sundry IP-addressed network devices in the
CMDB?  My task right now is to try to use what we have without adding any
classes or attributes, (at least for now), and it looks like most everything
can be shoved into the ComputerSystem class, since that is where the mapping
document says to put bridges, firewalls, routers and the like, but I am
interested to know how CMDB administrators have handled attributes like domain
name and primary and secondary IP address when there is no business need to
describe or to discover connectivity collections, endpoints, lans, etc.  Do you
just add attributes, or what?

the parent if I remember right). It relates these two CIs to the computer
system using the hosted access point class.

If you want to pull the best practice card then I’d go with the above.

So when the IP addresses are put into the LanEndpoint, I make a relationship to
the ComputerSystem records?  None of this is discovery stuff, it's all going to
be imported data for now.

Thanks everyone for your input!  I'll see what the customer wants to do.  This
is only a proof of concept system in any case, so we can try different things
to see what works.

I believe the IP Endpoint class is intended to document things like IP
addresses.  Adding an attribute for IP address is probably not a good solution,
unless you know that the device will only have one (or some maximum number of)
IP address(es).  As noted in someone else's reply, there is a field for domain
name on the computer system class already.

I wanted to know from those who have done some mapping of network hardware and

Do you

Hi Howard,

It's been a couple of years since I attempted to add something to the Service

spaghetti of code that does the create event and creates the Incident..  I
ended up adding a field to the SR and then pushing that field to the incident

completely.  It is possible to implement this workaround because an incident
number does get referenced in the SR during incident creation, and you can
backtrack to the field you want to push using the entry ID. And as you say, BMC
is not going to help you do it any more elegantly.

Re: Customization in the Approver Tab of change management

2009-02-20 Thread Louise Van Hine
The underlying form feeding the Approval tab is relatively straightforward:
there are a couple of forms, AP:Signature and gets joined to AP:Detail to make
up the query for the approval table which I believe is called
AP:Signature-Detail.  I have added things to that tab simply by making a field
on whichever is the base form holding the data and then added the column to the
table on the Change form.  Make sure you are adding the same field to the
correct base form then select it in the join form.  (Sorry i can't be more
specific here, I only have 7.5 in front of me and the architecture looks
slightly different.)

You may need to perform a lookup for the name using the Login ID in order to
populate it in the underlying form when the signature record gets created, but
that is not difficult to do.

Re: Heads-up: ITSM 7.5 needs 6 GB of memory ?

2009-02-17 Thread Louise Van Hine
Guilleaume,

I think that the ever-increasing resource requirements for the ITSM application
are the reason why BMC started building the VMware Flight decks complete with
a demo script for standard behavior for each of the modules, in order to supply
a portable demo environment.  I just finished installing 7..5 into a VM
multiple server environment, and it sure wasn't a slam dunk.

**
For all of you who used to have ITSM in your laptops for demo purposes (albeit
with a lot of pain):

In the ITSM 7.5 install guide, it states that it requires 6 GBs of memory.
The ITSM installer also refers to that requirement, but apparently is not
enforcing it, since I am running it right now on a 4GB development server. So
it did not complain, which is very good .
However, I just hope the installer does not crap out on me complaining there is
not enough memory!!

My concern is that it seems less and less feasible to load the ITSM suite in a
laptop to demo it. Maybe ITSM 7.5.1 will enforce that 6 GB limit in which case
my 4 GB dual processor laptop, which is fairly high end by the way, will not be
able to run it, or even install it. How about that. So unless you have a real
server out there that you can remote connect to, you would not be able to demo
the app at all.

I wonder if BMC has even thought and wondered about all this for their own
sales force, and the partners' sales force
I mean sometimes you are not allowed external network access at a customer site
until you have been granted access to. Even then, you always run into the
possibility of network issues or something that prevents you to demo the app.
Being able to demo the app from the laptop has always been a very good fail
safe alternativeone that looks less and less feasible.

I just installed 7.5 and had the same problem.

You have to make sure that you go into the User Tool AR System Administration
 Server Information Advanced tab.

You must put in a value for Default Web Path:

http://midtierserver:8080/arsys

where midtierserver is the server name where your Midtier is installed.

You also need to confirm that you have synchronized the Midtier administrator
password in the Midtier Configuration tool.

I see the BMC Atrium core on my home page, yet when I click it - the program

Re: Resolved: Tomcat Settings for ARS 7.1

2009-02-12 Thread Louise Van Hine
The easy way around this is to install Tomcat before installing your midtier,
using a separate Tomcat installation executable.  It takes longer but goes
where you want it to. I don't believe the installer gives you a path option
when you tell it to install Tomcat.

I've had the opposite, although frustrating experience.  I install my Midtier

A colleague helped me resolve this.  It turns out that the Midtier will NOT
work with Tomcat installed anywhere but on C, unless you want to change some
registry settings in Windows.  I reinstalled Tomcat on C and it worked okay.

Another gotcha is for some reason, perhaps it has to do with a flaw in the
installer, the application administration password and the midtier passwords
got messed up and would not allow a login through the midtier, regardless of
which user I attempted to log in with.  Resetting the same passwords on the AR
Server Administration console as well as resetting  the Midtier administrator
password, then checking Validate password cleared the problem.  But I had
done all of that the first time with the installer.  Apparently it is necessary
to go back and add them all in again.

Recently I switched to patch 006 and it ceased to crash my tomcat server ever

Read my posts about tomcat settings where someone else on the list asked

Yes, I did configure IIS that way.  the problem is that the instruction list I
have for IIS configuration is not complete.  I'll resume the fight again Monday

Tomcat and IIS must be both
using the same port causing a conflict? What is your port configuration? By
default Tomcat should use 8080 and IIS should be using 80.

I just installed this myself today.  Look carefully when you do the install -
because it will attempt to put a workspace in your logged-in user area on Drive

direct the install to the drive area that has the space.

Re: Canned reports for ITSM 7

2009-01-29 Thread Louise Van Hine
I just wanted to add that it IS possible to modify the canned reports for ITSM
if you have the Crystal client, you can change the design of the report or add
new ones.

It is also possible to create new reports with the Report interface.  Yes, it
is clunky and you don't get much more than a report definition in the standard
report output format - but it does allow the generation of those reports
directly from a piece of workflow.

I've always regarded the canned reports as suggested starting points for
reporting.  Every organization's reporting need and metrics are so diverse
there's no way BMC could provide very many reports that had actual value to
everyone.

I've always advised my customers to take that route when evaluating them.

You might take a look at BMC Analytics for BSM.  That gives you a set of canned
reports on top of Business Objects.  The canned reports there are also a bit
lame, but then you have the ability to modify them and create new ones using
Business Objects, which is something that you can’t really do with the Crystal
reports that just come with ITSM.

So, after 10 years of using this product, management here is finally
encouraging Managers to get more detailed stats from AR System. I’ve just been
using Excel spreadsheets with the ODBC connector to get stats, but this seems a
little challenging for someone who’s just a casual user, so I’ve been digging
into the canned reports that come with ITSM 7 to see which I should recommend
for which purposes.

Is it just me, or are these a little lame?

For example, the few that even have numbers in them, don’t have totals, so
people would have to count the entries to come up with a total. I could go on,
but let me just ask: Are many of you using these reports; have you modified the
canned ones to make them more useful, or have you just created your own?

Application-Query-Delete-Entry AP:Detail 'Request' = $Request ID$
AND 'Status-Dtl' = Pending

Application-Query-Delete-Entry takes 2 params, the first is the form

but the qualification string is not surrounded by quotes so it's hard
to determine the 2 params.

Estimated Resolution Time bug on Incident

I asked about a week ago whether anyone else had noticed that when
Incidents are

Re: Help with ARERR 552

2007-10-19 Thread E. Louise van Hine

Hi Dave,

I got this error on the Change Console form after I did the Patch 5 upgrade to
ITSM 7. For some reason, the upgrade failed to create the requisite field 179
that is called by the table in the form. I reported this as a high urgency
issue and logging of the error revealed that something had gone wrong with
the install, but it was not in their knowledge base as a known issue. Because
the installation was a test installation it made the most sense to simply
reinstall CM. this may be a flaw in your installation or upgrade that
might be
best suited to reinstallation, but it is alarming that the error is
happening on
the Group form.

Louise van Hine

Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

** Anyone have a recommendation for this.
When accessing the Group form we receive the error ARERR 552 Failure

This error prevents us from viewing, creating or modifying records on
the Group form.
The fields exist in the 'field' table but do not exist in the 'T9'

unsuccessful. My best guess on cause would be a problem with the
form creation/import during our database upgrade to 7.0.1. I would
try to manually create the fields in the T table, but do not want to
cause more issues than what I have.
Equally unsuccessful was to open a high impact ticket with BMC

v. 7.0.1 Incident - Estimated Resolution Date wrong

2007-10-17 Thread E. Louise van Hine
My customer has reported a consistent problem where the Incident record
has the

Estimated Resolution Date gets set to the Incident Response Time, rather than
the Incident Resolution Time. I have tracked this down and the filter does
indeed set this field to the Next Target date. What I don't understand is why
this always seems to be the Incident Response Time rather than the Resolution
time. Anyone seen this? Naively I reviewed the open defects on Incident and
didn't find it. It appears to run this way OOB.

The documentation on the Incident module states that Estimated Resolution date
should be the incident reported date plus the time allotted by the service
level agreement for resolution.

I have installed Patch 5 but clearly something went wrong that did not show up
in the logfiles because I was getting SQL errors upon opening the Change

If you still get these errors or if you have got them after

You really don't save a lot of money in software purchasing cost
between ARS and

Magic - what you save is consulting time/dollars in the implementation. so
up-front costs are still there whether you choose an ARS or a Magic initial
solution.

I agree with what's been posted so far. I had the opportunity to
work with Magic Version 8 for a customer and while it met some short
term needs, it is not a flexible to work with from a administrator's
perspective. What would be easy customizations to make in Remedy
seemed to be a choir in Magic and you would have to bring down and
restart the whole application for the simple changes to appear.

If the customer wants a more stable, flexible solution that can grow
with the business I would definitely follow some of the
recommendations already made here. I don't think that there is an
easy migration path from Magic to Remedy, nor in my humble opinion
will there ever be.

BMC does advertise Magic as their more cost-effective, low-end
application for small to medium-sized businesses not able or eager to make
the large investment required with ARS. That being said, however, I would
like to stress that it would be better in the long run if the company
spends at least 30 to 40k now in order to get on a base ARS system, and
develop a small customized app to fit their initial needs until they can
move to ITSM. I have found that once a company decides to go with an
application, even for a short term solution, that application tends to stay
around for much longer than originally intended. Money gets allocated to
other projects, priorities change, and so forth. IMO, I believe they would
be much better off to bite the bullet now rather than fight months or years
later to get into a product that could even be more expensive later than it
is now.

Case in point, another company I worked with in the past had a
subsidiary that was not happy with their ticketing system they used for
their call center. They asked our dev team to put together a proposal for
implementing a Remedy system for their call center. I mapped out costs to
implement the system in server hardware, app licensing, and time. I also
factored in costs for integrating Remedy with their financial applications,
and time to build a custom application for their analysts. In the end,
they did not want to spend the money required to convert over and use
Remedy instead of their current app that was not fulfilling their need. It
has been well over a year since that decision. They are still with their
old application, and they are still very much unhappy with it.

Frank,

My suggestions would be the following:

1) Buy the server, and the User license, but not the application.
Build to need with internal efforts.

If that is to expensive...

2) Contact BMC and get it in writing that buying Magic now could save
them money later when they are ready to upgrade to ARS.(If such a
thing exists.) It might be a cheaper initial buy-in, but it will also
likely cost you more (over all) then just starting with the base ARS
server. I would also push to explore the upgrade features from Magic
to ITSM Service Desk. (If such a thing exists.)

3) Fix the open sourced solution with the money they would have spent
on ARS. I am sure there are consultants out there in the Open Sourced
universe that would love to help with such an effort. It might be as
simple as buying bigger hardware, or as complex as moving the
project from MYSQL to Oracle/MSSQL.

But that is my two cents.

Status Transitions in ITSM 7

2007-09-26 Thread E. Louise van Hine

I had an interesting issue come up with making a modification to the CM module
in ITSM7 (patch 5.) There is a filter error that comes up which reads and
checks a value from the SYS:Status Transitions form, apparently checking
whether the status transition is invalid or valid, however, the value it
checks for is not the invalid flag but rather it sets (triggering the error)
when the status value is set to Enabled. The only thing that would allow me
to get past the error was setting the status on the Status Transition records
to Offline. I can't help but wonder whether the workflow was supposed to
check that Valid? flag rather than the status flag, or check both flags before
setting the temp field to trigger the status transition error.

Has anyone else seen this? Any thoughts on manipulating those Status
Transition

records?

thanks for any feedback,

whether or not there will actually be a fix engineered by Remedy

mainly been due to bad queries or queries run against large tables

such cases would be to document the changes you have made to fix
these problems, as well as take backup def files of your changes if
that is possible. BEFORE applying any patches later, it would be
good to read through the read me files and check to see if the list
of fixes corresponds to the fixes you have implemented yourself as
chances are the fix might be the same thing. It might also be a
good idea to notify Remedy support of that bug and inform them about
the changes you have had to make to correct them. That way they might
be able to advise you based on the record of that incident with them
on their records, on the best way to install a new patch that they
have released as they should be able to have a fair idea (hopefully)

Hi AR Listers,
I'm not sure if this question has been posted before.
We are on IM/PM 7.0.2 patch 5 and have found some out of the box bugs

from our system testing. Some of these bugs are high priority for us
to fix them now because they cause either confusion to users or
inconsistency. We've reported some in the past but not sure whether
they would be fixed in the next patch.
Our concern is that if we fix them by ourselves would it cause add-on

complexity when we apply the next IM/PM patch (in case they do get
fixed in the patch)?
How do you handle vendor bugs if they are something you have to fix
sooner than later? Your feedback is much appreciated.

Hi Matt,

That pdf you refer to is included in the patch .RAR file. I did not see a doc
on what was updated on the CMDB, but the Problem and Incident Management doc
does contain a list of issues that are addressed, as well as objects that are
updated. However, that is not the documentation I really need. The
documentation needed is what happens when the errors occur? what do the error
messages mean? If I get a fatal error (as I did) after an apparent successful
installation of the CMDB portion and a reboot, do I run it again?

That is the type of information needed to really evaluate what happened with
this installer, adn I just... don't see it anywhere.

Louise, the problem you reported is one of the reasons we're not going to
install patch 5. I asked (after digging through the docs as best I could)
for a list of what was added/modified/removed as a result of the patch, so
that we could know what of our customizations might conflict with those. I
was told that there was no list. I escalated to Engineering, which told me
the same thing. Now we all know that there COULD be a list, so it's a
matter of won't rather than can't at this point. In the meantime, the level
of risk is an unknowable thing, and therefore we cannot install the patch.

Seems as though a product manager should understand issues of change and
release management - in a real life environment - before asking customers to
do something as silly as install a blind patch. If I am in charge of a
Remedy application, and my admin says he wants to put a patch in, the first
question I want to ask is Why, and the second is How will it affect what
we already have?. That the person in charge of releasing this patch
apparently couldn't anticipate such a question is troubling. I guess that's
what happens when one rids oneself of the nuisance of the people that do
understand such things, and replaces them with those that don't.

As to the verification of what's been upgraded, if they are still creating
html logs, those are the most reliable sources of information on the subject
of success or failure of an installation or patch.

Ironically, there was a time not that long ago that I could get the KB site
to work WITH Firefox, but not with IE. That was before they 'fixed' it,
though.

- it makes no sense that with a major browser platform one can't use
that site!

Especially considering how much support costs.
I mean ... *seriously* ...

It wouldn't work for me with Fire Fox. When I logged issue with
support, the answer was Fire Fox is not supported. Once I switched
to IE and allowed pop ups for the site I had no problem.

I haven't been able to get a search to run on the BMC Knowledge base,
even when I select a product. I have just put in a support request
for it, but perhaps someone else has a tip or trick for running a
search, because keyword searching with that top panel does not seem
to function without a huge JSP error.
Could it have something to do with running Mozilla Firefox 2.0?

about that matt reinfeldt site

2007-07-18 Thread E. Louise van Hine

I registered for mattreinfeldt.com long long ago and have not been able to log
in since. Does anyone know whether the server is being administrated and/or
who to get in touch with ? It is a great site, particularly for up to date
technical info on ITSM but I would like to be able to get in and post things,
and I can neither login (forgotten password) nor create a new account. My
contact messages have gone unanswered.

Re: Tenancy mode

2007-06-23 Thread E. Louise van Hine
multi-tenancy refers, I believe (without having the thing in front of me at
the moment) to do with being able to change the organization that a login
belongs to, and that this is a necessary setting for setting up LDAP single
sign-on integrations. I know that when I did an LDAP to Lotus integration I
had to have multi-tenancy selected to set up the LDAP.

I myself have been trying to understand what happens when you go to Multi
tenancy as well.

Anyone have a real good idea what is going on behind the covers?

single tenancy mode is required if you need unknown users to access the

but who are unknown users. I thought unknown users are whom do not have
licence . but these users can login and see the request console if multi
tenancy is selected.

who are the unknown users exactly???
