I agree that many, many people use Wiki. So you are absolutely right - we should endeavor to make it better. This also highlight why Wiki isn't a reliable source. As you say, the Asbury Park installment, taken as a whole, seems misleading. THe same is true for much of Wiki. It's OK for facts beyond dispute (birth and death dates, etc, but awful for anything subject to interpretation). Just wait until you see the fight you're in for when you try to change it. People who think just anyone can change it are wrong. There are a number of Wiki people out their, with no expertise on anything, that have veto power on what you put up there. They monitor every chnage. IF they don't like it, they change it back. I hope you can get it done. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In a message dated 7/30/2007 8:21:23 A.M. This would be a perfect job for the Asbury Park Historic Society, but, are they actually still a functioning group? The reason I ask is that I tried contacting them several times around the time that the Library Square Park fountain was vandalized, and I heard nothing from them. This surprised me, because they renovated the fountain and had a sprinkler system installed, but after both of those were damaged I have yet to see or hear anything from the society about this. It's like they went into the park and did some good work, then they pretty much forgot about the place. I'm sure it hurt them to find their efforts destroyed, but that doesn't mean that you just give up and move on. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Allan Peterson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The city can't ever maintain their own website. [AsburyPark] The soundtrack to every summer Sunday night - Paradise
Yikes. I don't know if I can take much more. Every Sunday night, Paradise has an outdoor party with a very loud DJ who plays the same terrible disco hits, Barbara Streisand and other assorted music over and over again. He even played the same music last summer. Unfortunately, I live about a block away and this soundtrack pounds into my living room every single Sunday night until 10pm. While I have no problem at all with having a fun night at Paradise, perhaps they could diversify their playlists a bit more so that I don't have to hear Last Chance by Donna Summer ever again. I have to believe that the patrons there have a bit better musical tastes then this repetitive crap that i'm forced to listen to. Last night, I had to close my windows because the volume was out of control, thus ruining my summer nights breeze and the quiet that we should have on a Sunday night. Yahoo! Mariachi music!!! Nice. The one thing that the SP has going for it's outdoor shows is that their PA system faces directly out to the ocean, which minimizes bleed on either side, and most of the PA systems they bring in are fairly directional. During last nights Paradise Disco extravaganza, they were actually drowning out the show at the Pony. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, dfsavgny [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Hinge hinge98@ wrote: Yikes. [AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park Images at Wikipedia
Anyone can update Wiki, but making it stick is the problem. People there have seniority depending upon how much they use the site. At some point they get granted a certain status. Accordingly, the people who use it most are the ones who have time - high school and college kids. If one of these guys with seniority doesn't like your post, not only can he take it down, he can suspend your posting privileges. Understand I'm not talking about someone actually connected with the ownership of Wiki - I'm talking about another usuer. So if some scientist wants to post something about stem cell research, and a High Schooler with seniority disagrees, the High Schooler gets to decide if it stays. Popular site? Absolutely - Mario's right we should change the Asbury Park entry. Reliable site? Not a chance (proof is that we are talking about having to change the entry in the fisrt place). --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, oakdorf [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: anyone can update the Wikipedia entries. Dan wrote: and was recently cited by a NYS Supreme Court judge in a decision. Yes it was. Many of the criticisms mentioned here deal with issues that have been ironed out. Last week's NYT reported that Wiki media is now giving Google a run for its money. IP addresses of people who hack or screw up with biased or incorrect information or refuse to be civil about disagreements on the discussion pages are blocked from editing. Jimbo Wales ( _http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jimbo_Wales_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jimbo_Wales) ) founded Wiki and did a 45 minute interview at C-Span this weekend. He explains away most of the issues raised at the above link or at the interview here: Lookfor RECENT PROGRAMS __ (http://www.c-span.org/videoarchives.asp?CatCodePairs=Series,APSArchiveDays=100) _American Perspectives: Jimbo Wales, Dan Rather, Tammy Bruce_ (javascript:playClip(clip31856)) (07/28/2007)here: _Click here: C-SPAN: AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES_ (http://www.c-span.org/homepage.asp?Cat=SeriesCode=APSShowVidNum=10Rot_Cat_CD=APSRot_HT=206Rot_WD=ShowVid Days=100ShowVidDesc=ArchiveDays=100) The success of the site is partly attributed to the fact that info without citations are labeled as so, and therefore, suspect. Of course the site would have to be monitored, just as this board is for misinformation. Considering the high traffic the site receives now, it could be a very valuable PR tool for the city. High Schools and colleges are now clamping down on students using Wiki for research, just as in the old days we were not permitted to use encyclopedias as sources. If we all collaborated and reached consensus, the entry would remain intact. They now have all sorts of safeguards in place. Can't see why the city or developers wouldn't want to look into it -- all free PR. As it stands now, with some of those pictures , can't see why anyone would follow up if he or she were thinking of buying here. BTW: Way back when, when I objected to a legend about the fighter Max in Hitler's Germany, I submitted the additional info from the NYT letter to the editor. Ocean City is a town that prides itself on tradition and old-fashioned charm. But that doesn't mean it can't keep up with the latest technology. Three rob Asbury Park man Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 07/30/07 ASBURY PARK — Three young men stole an iPod from a 31-year-old city man as he walked in the area of Asbury Avenue and Bond Street, police said. Around 1:45 a.m. Sunday, the three robbers approached the victim and one struck the 31- year-old in the face, said Capt. David Kelso. They stole his iPod and ran away. The victim refused medical attention, said Kelso. The robbers were described as men in their 20s who wore white T-shirts and blue jeans. Detective Jason LaRusso is handling the investigation. I think that this is a great idea and would be a great thing for the City. I went to see Tom Gilmore, UEZ, over two years ago regarding this issue as I suggested that the UEZ get Asbury Partners, the Chamber of Commerce/Merchants Guild, and the Board of Education together to champion, fund, get grants, and support this idea for a number of reasons. It would be a selling point for the waterfront area; it would be a selling point for the merchants, and it would afford the City school students the opportunity to get on the net without paying a monthly fee. I don't believe it went anywhere at that time. I would be interested in supporting the initiation of this concept again as I believe that the above reasons are still valid. How on earth can anyone be trusted to get the story right when any version of the story is only as accurate, or even as serious, as the last anonymous person to log on and rewrite it? I think one of the problems with a citywide WiFi system is that the service provider, probably Cablevision, wouldn't want to compete with itself by giving away something for free in a city where it's got many subscribers. It would probably be best used in non-residential areas i.e Convention, Hotel, Dining,...facilities and the beach, the Cookman sidewalk cafe zone etc. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, wernerapnj [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Hinge hinge98@ wrote: Austin Texas has free WiFi === = Regarding Austin: To help stimulate business, the city seized on the opportunity to host the World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT), a high- profile symposium held every two years in different locations around the globe. Re: [AsburyPark] Wikipedia Wipes Out Gays In Asbury Park!
The section about Gay AP was written 3-4 years ago by someone who over emphasized the gay nightlife at the expense of AP's other music scenes and diversity. Later on a whole section was added about the historic case of One Eleven Wines and Liquors, Inc. v. NJ's ABC. At the time, Wiki was not the number one site (according to last week's NYT) it is today. Those of us who noticed the editing didn't think it important enough to bother with especially after a link was added for _http://www.gayasburypark.com/_ (http://www.gayasburypark.com/) . My point in starting this thread yesterday was that, given the resource that it is for many people now--2007--, the entry deserves more attention. I didn't notice any factual errors, so I guess it's reliable in that sense. But the pictures are outdated All that overstatement below, and the CAPS, make me wonder Is this a high school student posting for TD and hijacking the threads intent? All heat and no light. Peevish too.. === In a message dated 7/30/2007 6:27:58 P.M. Mario I'm not sure why we ended up arguing over this. I said in the beginning of the thread that I thought you were right. I believe the Wiki AP section needs to be updated. Again, I said you were right about that. Not sure what more I can do than say you are right about something. I added also that I don't like Wiki as a reliable source. That certainly isn't a knock against you personally. I just don't trust the website. I understand that you do trust it more than I do. I don't know why that disagreement requires you and I to go back and forth at eachother like we did. For some reason, we fell into it. I hope we can end this where we agree - updating the AP Wiki page is necessary, and appears to be underway. Yahoo!
