Tommy, Thanks! I too, can't quite be in the mix, per se, as far as The Black Experience. I wasn't raised in the ghetto and had never heard the word, attributed to Blacks, until the riots of the 60's! I was so naive, I didn't know the projects, were public housing, or that public housing, was for low income people, of all races! I didn't understand why some whites, called us, the N word. I had never seen a Puerto Rican, or persons, readily speaking Spanish, until, I moved here! When I came East, in 1970, I couldn't understand Blacks, (older ones), referring to African Americans, as colored, when progressives like myself, self-defined myself, as African American or just plain Black, because I am really mixed, don't know which African tribe I descended, from! When I look back, now, I really led a charmed life. My father owned a business, and I, with my 3 siblings, attended Parochial School, for 13 years and stupidly assumed, people were poor, through their own fault! Why? My father always had 2 jobs, we lived in a home he bought after his service, in WWII. All of our family and associates were Roman Catholic! My family ran the gamut of complexions, so fair, they were mistaken for white and so black, it was undeniable, who they were! I stupidly thought all Blacks, looked like that, before I had formal Black Studies, out of curiosity, more than to seek the truth! There are still People of Color, in my home-town, who don't consider themselves as Black people, clinging to and denying, their Black Heritage. I feel sorry for them, for their apparent, ignorance! Katrina, should have opened their eyes! I've also learned from other ethnicities, the importance of teaching your children, who they are, what traditions they should adhere, to. MOVE ON, I challenge you, to live like this; deprived, depressed and disgusted! How about taking the opportunity to better one's own condition and that of their family by using all the resources available to them to get ahead? My kids want a huge on the ocean, boats and fancy cars. I busted my rear to have what I owe the bank today. On most weekends over the psat 20 years, my friends would stop by and i'd be covered in spackle, paint or dirt working on our house(s). This is America, the land of opportunity, of which there are tons. Sometimes you have to break out in a sweat to get paid. Most people don't want to. For lack of work, someone could always volunteer, which may lead to a paying job. There are more programs in corporate America to address diversity. Job fairs, promotion opportunities etc. Having been around that world, as you have, I'm sure you noticed that at times, jobs are given to people who simply shouldn't have them, given the qualifications. That's all I'll say on that. Ot get ahead, you have to do it on your own and not expect someone else to do it for you. I recently did some research involving the hispanic community in the US. When you ask what their aspirations are the number one answer by a wide margin is learning english. They recognize that English in this country is the key to success. However many don't have the opportunity to prioritize learning english given the cost of classes and the need to work to put food on the table and they can get by without learning it as their frends, family and local communities are often either Spanish dominant or Spanish-friendly. I do think this is a bit different than past migrations to the US which were more diverse and more of a melting pot with English as the common denominator vs. today's spanish-language dominant immigration. I've never been a supporter of a national language in part because I always felt that it was being suggested more as a punative anti-immigrant measure. But perhaps it is time if done properly. Securing our borders is aboslutely critical - we should do whatever it takes. But Tom let's be serious about the 12+ million people who are here. You gloss over it as so many do below by talking about the 70k felons we could start with. That's a rounding error in terms of trying to arrest and deport all of them back home. I have never heard any real solution to addressing these folks from the hard-line crew. They are here, like it or not. The reality is you simply can't tell them to go home (there's nothing there for them) and there won't ever be enouh resources to deport them. So, what's the solution? Stop them from getting work? They're here already - so that leaves them with two choices. 1 - go home which isn't going to happen as they came here because they couldn't feed their family where they were. 2 - resort to real crime - robbery, drug trafficking, etc., as that will become the only way to support themselves. Bottom line it is very easy for us all to sit here and say they broke the law coming here - we shouldn't enable them. And it is easy because we have jobs, food, etc... But if it was you who had nothing and your family was hungry what would you be willing to do to provide for them? Perhaps jump over a porous border? Blame the Mexican government for failing to address the needs of their citizens. Blame the US government for failing to protect the borders. Don't blame the vast majority of illegals who are good people who have nothing at all and no opportunity to change that for themselves and their children in Mexico. There have been studies looking at the growth of the US economy over 150 years. The economy always grew faster after great waves of immigration. Interesting info, but useless to the current situation. Nothing like we are experiencing right now has ever happened in history, so history is no guide here. First of all, the extensive welfare state is much younger than 150 years. No country has ever been asked to handle this many foreigners at one time, educate them, give them healthcare, welfare, etc. Consider some numbers. After America was formed, the two largest groups of immigrants from Europe are Germans, followed by Italians. There are more illegals STANDING IN AMERICA RIGHT NOW than all the Germans and Italians that came here combined over the past 225 years. We have more foriegn born people STANDING IN AMERICA RIGHT NOW than all the immigrants who came here combined in the 350 years from 1607 to 1965. Some assert the number of illegals crossing the border is as high as 2 million each year. Gov. Bill Richardson of Arizona says his state sees 4500 illegals cross the border EVERY DAY. No one knows if American can bear this weight. All of these people cannot simply be deported. Most can be. Lets start with the approximately 70,000 that arrive each year with felony records. It is probably the only thing on which I will ever agree with Dubya. President Bush's failure to secure our borders in a time of war is a gross dereliction of his Constitution duties (not to mention a failure to ensure domestic tranquilty, as I would

You can't deport them in a day. You can deport them through attrition over time. There's never been a reason why we can't offered by the soft liners (since you find such labels helpful). There are millions of people who applied to come to America legally, and are patiently awaiting their turn. Have you no concern for the poor of others countries who are following the rules? They apply for public assitence in a higher rates than any other group. The freebies they get at hospitals alone is why I pay between $10,000 and $12,000 yearly for health insurance. By attrition I mean catch them in usual course. I'm not suggesting a hunt (except for the ones with felony convictions). All that needs to be done is enforce the existing laws, the ones that have been on the books since the 1980;s, which the President refuses to do. When we catch them through traffic tickets, tax evasion, welfare applications, school admissions, etc., we then deport them. OVer time we will reduce their numbers almost entirely. You're making it up that it would cost less to keep them here. A bus ride to the border isn't any where near as expensive as the free education and healthcare costs we would give them in a single day. Lets not forget the costs to the poor Black community that can't get a good wage because of our lack of enforcement. That's a huge cost not only in terms of real dollars, but also to our domestic tranquility when the Blacks finally say enough is enough. Remember too what is happening in the southwest and California is very different than what is happening here. There is a reconquista movement to take back Texas, New Mexico and California for Mexico, in the same fashion we gained it from Mexico: by populating that land with people first. Tommy, Like most people, you've missed a very important point that gets glossed over. What about the people that hire the illegals? They are the ones that have been driving the demand for years. Can you honestly blame a person who comes to this country with the promise of work from people who are willing to pay lower wages without the additional burden of providing insurance etc? The illegals that mill around parking lots everyday looking for work are being picked up by people that have a choice. They have a choice to hire legal workers and pay them a competitive wage...but no...they pay them under the table marginal wages, and they work their asses off for that money. I, for one, am completely against an official language. Language and culture are forever linked. I don't see anybody trying to make English the official language of the Chinatowns and Little Italy's of America. I'd hate to live in a country without any ethnic culture. I happen to like the sound of other languages. Actually, I think we'd all be better off if we required all kids to learn spanish. What's the downside of that? We'd have smarter kids, we'd preserve culture and we'd catch up to the European countries where virtually everybody speaks 2 to 3 languages ( English is spoken virtually everywhere in Europe.) Speaking of English being spoken in Europe, once upon a time I was in East Germany and we were lost. One of our roadies got out of our bus and went up to an 80 year old lady, and got in her face and said Yo, you speak American and when she didn't respond, this jerk of a guy yelled at her for not understanding. I saw that same thing repeated quite a few times in my travels, and I find it disgusting. The problem most Americans have is that we speak only English. That is unless our parents or grandparents lived with us and taught us, instead of using it to talk behind our back. Because he was able to find an ttorney to sue his former employer for workers comp, claiming a back injury. He told me he'd pay me when he gets his settlement. His wife thinks they will buy a house when he wins. They didn't count on the fomer employer fighting it. So in freehold, which they found quite well on their own, they had a court interperator, forgot they understand english pretty good. So in my hand, I have eviction papers. And I get paid every Sunday night. The social worker told him, yes, you have to find work. He thought he'd sit on his ass while hs wife cleaned houses and try to sue for a bullshit back injury. I told him simply: This is America. You live in my house for which you are to pay me rent. I have to pay taxes, insurance, water, lawn and mortage. This is not free. Go out and get a f'in job or find someplace else to live. And take the dog with you. Once again, I'll stand beside Tommy on an issue most people probably wouldn't believe a liberal would stand beside a conservative. I look at it this way. We have had waves of immigration from Germans, from Italians, from Chinese and other nationalities. The difference is that the current wave is simply not assimilating in any way of the previous waves. And for good reason. As Tommy points out, it's easy to have 1 or 2 million Germans or Italians learn the language but when you have 10-20 million of a different language come over at the same time there is less reason to assimilate - especially when we run ads in print and tv in Spanish and allow businesses like bodegas to be completely in Spanish. This is far different from having a Chinatown that's a block long. Belmar, just ten years ago, didn't have a single bodega. We now have 3 within a 5 block area. I have nothing against that (and personally love Spanish food); however, I do think America would be better off having an official language as I do see many problems for the country in the next 5-10 years and I don't see the assimilation or desire to be part of the melting pot that previous immigration waves showed. This immigration wave is very different. If you don't believe that, please show me a part of America where my German ancestors still speak solely German. I doubt there is such a place.

Now both parties are trying to keep a permenant, low wage slave class here too, at the expense of working class Blacks who can't ask for a living wage. Many of the illegal Mexicans aren't intrested in a living wage - they live 30 in a house, send the money back to Mexico and retire there in a few years because the exchange rate is so favorable. Don't take my word for it. Read up on Cesar Chaves, a left wing hero who organized the fruit laborers in California. He was a constant fighter against illegal immigration from Mexico because it allowed employers to not pay a living wage to American workers. Can't we learn from our own recent history? living wage?? Many live here making good $. Union? They have their own. Everyone wants $15 PER HOUR, CASH. Cleaning ladies want even more. There is no such thing as a $10 hour guy any more. If you do find one, you need 2, cause they work HALF as hard. So you take your tenant to court, later find out they are here illegally. They have a court interperter. Bingo, they know the law(s), their rights (like not to pay rent). They can't get section 8 or any other help to pay their housing (that I am aware of ), but given a number to call to get sponsored. That way, they get all those goodies. You have landlords you make a bundle off these guys. Then you have schmuck landlords you look for a good normal tenant and hope they pay. nice guys they say...
