[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park, Europe the future
Yep ... good post. Upward and onward. The lifeguards are much busier now than five years ago ... BG ... what did the Captain bark at me once when I was on the beach about two years ago in July ... ASBURY IS BACK! BG. Yep it is ... if all we can do know is cry about some copper panels on some buidling ... this is good ... if this is the main issue this week ... BG. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Dave dsher4@... wrote: With all due respect to Hinge and Werner (both of whom i respect for their posts, intelligence, knowledge and passion about the town, particularly werner who is extremely knowledgable on a number of topics), it is important that we realize that Asbury is not continental Europe and that ironically is a good thing. While gorgeous in architecture and history, the socialistic aspects of Europe have effectively brought the continent to its knees in a terrible financial crisis that in many ways is far worse than the housing situation that we went through here. The crisis in that content will continue to plague them for years to come and while all of us love Europe for its splendor, it is unfortunately a great place to visit but one who's future is troubled by its financial situation which will be an albatross for years to come. I too wish that Asbury could be completely restored to its former splendor. However, i am also aware that i have to balance that desire with the pragmatic aspects of the current and the future. Both in regard to economics and social change. While historic theatre's are romantic and whimsical to think about, we live in a world of iPod's and Facebook. Sometimes change is scary but it is a part of moving forward in history. Just like Asbury was transformative in its beginning, it should be so again. When reading the history books, the town was forward thinking with indoor air conditioning in the paramount or a train line over sunset bridge that took patrons downtown for shopping. in the 1920's this was futuristic stuff. We need to think about what is forward thinking now and attempt to tie it appropriately to our past. One size does not fit all. I for one think the town is on a very promising path of resurgence. Asbury has done extremely well though a brutal economic downturn. With no help from a very failed redevelopment plan, the town has found a way to claw itself further along house by house, business by business. Crime is obviously a very serious problem and one that needs to be addressed. So where do we go from here. Importantly, the economy is starting to rebound and the housing market has found its bottom although their is likely to be a shallow upturn rather than a resurgence. As werner has talked about i think the town's resurgence has its roots in music and entertainment. I'm glad bamboozle is coming to Asbury and anything we can do to promote both music and entertainment should be applauded how can we blend the past and the future? While i agree with Werner that the loss of some of the historical treasures are a tragedy, i also realize that the economic realities made it so. that being said, i think the historical artifacts and building that are left such as convention hall or the beautiful casino building should be brought back to their historical glory. This is an enormous economic undertaking and needs to be considered in light of reformation in the context of a return on invested capital. Even back in the 1920's, the architects of the buildings did not think they were going to be built for beauty alone without form of purpose. I am a bit discouraged regarding the posts i read on this site. I find that every post is castigating madison marquette for all of their transgressions. I want to say that i have zero affiliation with madison marquette and only have spoken to their representatives over an errant vodka soda one summer evening. i agree they have made some mistakes but as a homeowner in this town i am thrilled that they are here, undertaking an enormous monetary investment and trying to bring the town back in spite of its challenges. I know that given the circumstances most people would have cut bait at this point considering the investment and I for one am glad MM has not. I'm not sure what the alternative is. It's always easy to criticize but always more difficult to offer solutions. I'm not sure if anyone from Madison marquette reads this board. Or if any of the more involved citizens of Asbury would be willing to get involved. I think it would be a great idea to bring together an ad hoc group to discuss potential improvements to the redevelopment and or town under the concept of cooperation and not attack... effectively a brain storming group where no idea was stupid and attacks on the past, future or status quo were avoided in lieu of ideas about what could be better. Yeah, I had parts stolen off my bike a few years ago. Last night, a neighbor of mine who constantly makes the mistake of locking her bike to a telephone pole also had her front wheel stolen, and it's her only transportation. What can be done about this? Obviously parents aren't wondering where their kids are getting all of their bikes and bike parts. Doesn't it all come back to inattentive parenting? If you kid has 10 bikes in their backyard and you don't question you child about it, then something is wrong. I see boys riding girls bikes and big kids riding bikes that are way to small for them all the time. One time when I was working at Second Life Bikes, and kid came in with a bike freshly painted with black spray paint. I asked him where he got it. He said it was sitting on the curb, so he just took it. I told him that a spray painted bike is a tell-tale sign of it being stolen. He acted nervous and would not look me in the eye. Repeat that over and over in our city. Interesting, thanks for posting. Did anyone go inside during 2006 when it was open? Seems like if extensive renovations were done in 2005-2006, that, in four years, it wouldn't have fallen apart... Cathryn. From the article: During the two decades under then-owners Walter Burns and Maurice Roberson, the theater opened intermittently starting in 1986. Developers Dennis Dubrow and Patrick Fasano bought the theater in December 2005 and reopened it for the summer after extensive renovations in July 2006. The following summer Fasano and Dubrow sold it to the cityâs master redeveloper. The theater never opened again. Years of decay took its toll on the art deco building that stood neglected and underutilized while the city limped along in a stalled oceanfront redevelopment. I liked the Baronet because it was the oldest theater in town, Crawford said. It was just a nice comfortable theater. The Baronet, Stine said, is one of many historically significant buildings the city continues to lose to redevelopment and neglect. This has been an ongoing problem in the city for decades actually â demolition through neglect, Stine said. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, marioa...@... wrote: _Asbury Park historical society pushes to salvage Baronet Theater artifacts | NJ.com_ (http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/11/asbury_park_historical_society.html) _http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/11/asbury_park_historical_society.htm l_ (http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/11/asbury_park_historical_society.html) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park plans tree-lighting for Sunday
In YOUR country? What are we, chopped liver? Yes, Germany was first and Queen Victoria introduced it to the Brits through her German husband Prince Albert, later introduced into the United States, during the Victorian period. However the customs of Christmas evolved, the overcommercialization of one of the Churches most sacred days cannot be overemphasized. For me, Good Friday, is the most sacred of all Holy Days. For God so gave the world, His only begotten Son. Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, ring true for me, followed by Pentecost. No need to argue over who started what, because like a child, I still believe in Santa Claus or the very idea of him. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, justifiedright [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Interesting historical perspective about other parts of the world. There are various legends regarding the origin of the Christmas tree, often relating to Saint Boniface. Thus, in one version, Boniface disrupted a pagan child sacrifice at an oak tree, flattening the oak with a blow of his fist. A small fir sprang up in place of the oak, which Boniface told the pagans represented Christ.[1] In some accounts, Martin Luther is credited with adding lights and decoration to fir branches traditionally hung from ceilings.[2] Condemnation of the Christmas tree as pagan has been based on a passage in Jeremiah, Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. (Jeremiah 10:2-4, KJV). Christmas traditions in general have often been associated with paganism in 19th century scholarship. Robert Chambers in his 1832 Book of Days notes that the festivities of Christmas originally derived from the Roman Saturnalia , had afterwards been intermingled with the ceremonies observed by the British Druids at the period of winter-solstice, and at a subsequent period became incorporated with the grim mythology of the ancient Saxons. Two popular observances belonging to Christmas are more especially derived from the worship of our pagan ancestorsthe hanging up of the mistletoe and the burning of the Yule log. Regarding the Christmas tree itself, Chambers notes that it seems to be a very ancient custom in Germany, and is probably a remnant of the splendid and fanciful pageants of the middle ages. Other traditions relating to Christmas that may derive from Germanic pagan practices include the Christmas ham, Yule Goat, stuffing stockings, elements of Santa Claus and his nocturnal ride through the sky, and elements of Alpine folklore.[3] There are also some accounts that place the earliest Christmas trees in the Baltic (variously Estonia or Lativa), while in actuality the custom was introduced there in the 1920s. Hmmm I am not sure where this news aired from, but my first question would be: Should we really be out there singing: On the First Day of Christmas, Ma-Tola-Gave-To-Us, a Christmas Tree inside the Car-Rou- Sel? [AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park v Howell
Howell - 20. Asbury Park - 12. Great game. They may play again in a post season game in AP; I'll let you all know if it happends. After the 1st kick-off there were 4 officials on the field, and they were going to keep time there. The coach of AP objected and wanted official time kept on the scoreboard, which takes an official off the field. It's his right to insist, but it does take a pair of eyes away. The next play when there was 3 officials, there was a Howell TD. Looked to me like he was out of bounds (AP players all pointing to the spot I saw), and ironically, the official keeping time would have been in position to catch it were he down there. Howell was leading 14-0 right before the half. Ran some plays when he could have sat on it (probably trying to get kids plays). Lost the ball and AP scored. Very exciting. Late in the forth it was 14-12 with Howell drinving. 4th down and 8 to go at mid field. Most would have punted. Howell completed a pass play for the 1st that eventually led to a TD. Game ended exciting too, with AP driving. Could have tied the game. Pass intercepted by Howell with short time left. This is Howard Cosell signing off Yahoo! Don't have a clue! One of Neptune's former players is playing for Marlboro. Don't know which team was discontinued. I did attend Neptune's Homecoming last Saturday. The Class of 1976, was being honored. I notice Asbury Park Pop Warner kids out on the street with buckets, asking for donations. What's up with that? 3 of my kids live in Neptune, which is why I know. Received a call during the Marlboro game that the parents from Marlboro were fighting with the refs! When I was coaching they were doing the same thing, (80's)! Overzealous parents complaining that their kids weren't getting into the game! What can I say? No sportsmanship? --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, justifiedright [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Very intriguing Pop Warner game on Sunday afternoon at 4:30 if you are interested. At one point in the season, not only was every team at every level (mighty might, jr pee wee, pee wee, jr midget and midget) undefeated, BUT EVERY GAME AT EVERY LEVEL WAS A SHUT OUT. Wow. Not sure if that's even changed. For some reason, many kids from Neptune are playing for Asbury. Neptune's program seems decimated. I heard they had to drop one level completely, and when the mighty might team I coach in Howell went to play them, Neptune forfieted for not having enough players. Anyone know what's up with that? Sharon?? Anyway, Howell also has an undefeated team (not sure if it is pee wee or jr midget). They happen to be playing an Asbury team on Sunday. I'll be spotting the game for the announcer. The announcer will be Mike Clark, who graduated APHS with me and coaches with me here in Howell. HOWELL WILL BE PACKED WITH FANS! They moved this game from Saturday because Saturday is Howell Day and the fear was so many people were going to the game that Howell Day would be a bust. Accordingly, to keep Howells 12th man off the field, the Asbury Park kids are going to need many people to come cheer for them, so pass this around and come if you can. Show some Asbury spirit and come support the kids. Everyone's welcome. Should be fun and a great game. I don't think it's wrong to be critical of the way the system was implemented. This is a system, which people have shown quite a bit of confusion in using - one that had at least one local town (Belmar) eliminate the system for that very reason. The meters also run a good 5 hours longer than any of the nearby towns. I have to agree with Gary. The parking meters would be good for the city if they were properly implemented, but they weren't. It was confusing. And it's even more confusing that you can park in a lot for free, but you can also park in a confusing paid parking space , potentially screw up and wind up with a $26 ticket. This whole situation is just bad PR for AP. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, lightgrw [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I don't think it's wrong to be critical of the way the system was implemented. This is a system, which people have shown quite a bit of confusion in using - one that had at least one local town (Belmar) eliminate the system for that very reason. [AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park court swamped by parking tickets
The city failed with this parking system on so many different levels. First off, they should've waited till next summer, or until more of the renovation is complete. Secondly, it's confusing people left and right. And if you park too far away from the machines, and don't know that you have to pay to park, and didn't note the space number, you have to walk all the way back to your car. Strike 2. Finally, there is no communication between the city and MM, because MM has free lots at the SP, Casino and the Wonder Bar. People seems to be parking in those, rather then use the pay spaces. I'd do the same thing. Nobody is watching those lots. This is already generating lots of brand new bad publicity for our city. It should. If you get a $26 ticket because the system is confusing, you are gonna tell all your friends about it. I think the city should cancel all of those tickets that were issued and fix things. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This system works in NY. Self-interested speculation?... quality rather than quantity...? Perhaps Asbury Park, Asbury Partners and MM need a history lesson. from the Chicago Plan website ... there was too much ugliness and squalor. The planners blamed this condition on uncontrolled development and self-interested speculation. The Plan maintains that the issue facing Chicago is no longer expansion but conservation, quality rather than quantity of life. Time and again, it declares that a city's social, cultural, and financial well-being are inseparable. The constant struggle of civilization is to know and to attain the highest good, it states, and the city which brings about the best conditions of life becomes the most prosperous. Lack of planning had wasted time, effort, and money, - (Note that last line) Werner Yahoo! First people said no one will come to Asbury. Now its there is grid lock because too many people are coming to Asbury. My coworkers who visited asbury could not believe all the events that were going on. Yup they had to drive around to find parking near North Beach, but they also paid $150/cple
[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park ?
(Con't) they paid $150/cple to eat at Salt Water. They loved it and raved about how much asbury has progressed. They are planning on going back this weekend. I like the way the pavilions look. Could they be better? Sure. Am I going to complain..nope. The people are coming and everyone is having a good time. Isn't that what the boardwalk is supposed to present? A good time. Did anyone try the Cuban sandwiches? They are great!

Glenn, You're absolutely right! Why doesn't the hypocrisy of it all, NOT surprise me? At the 110th Anniversary, thing, the Carousel was used for the cake, but still, no carousel in the city, except in our minds, which I lost a long time ago! My mind, that is! Well, the snow is falling and AP schools are open, as usual! Seems they'd give these kids ONE snow day, since they haven't had any all year! As far as the Chamber, it's just a popularity contest, as far as I'm concerned. Name me one member, no 2, that live here! A lot of what goes on here, is just so window dressing! Too many restaurants, with no real business, here. Well, at least Tommy is consistent, with being a Republican; seems he owns an oil business, here! Read it in the paper. Weldon's pensions suspended. Have mixed feelings over that. His firemen's pension, shouldn't have been involved. Seems he earned that. He still has his family. Sorry folks, they shouldn't have to pay for his mistakes. You took the words, right out of my mouth! These 34 to 40 somethings, don't want anything, but singles stuff and their little martini bars and beach houses! I came to the boardwalk, to have a kosher hot dog and REAL lemonade! The fresh air and the funny looking fat/skinny and buffed boys and girls, taking the surf! The sounds of summer and the isolation in winter, when you had the BW to yourself! Would see dogs being walked, a lone runner or goofy me, walking the boards. Now, you have to contend with those who think they knowitall about US! For those who remember miniature golf and the cutesy rides for kids, go to seaside Hts., there's nothing here for YOU! The problem was not just the isolation in the winter, but the isolation in the summer. And don't forget, bringing events back to CH year round - like the old days. The off months were ceramic shows, boat shows and more. Ceramic shows were the almost the best weekends of the year and that was around Feb - march if i can think back that far. It wasn't kids or 30's somethings. It was busloads and busloads of seniors getting off at CH or Michael's and eating. What creates memories is a starting point with a family To assume that a childless couple will be buying a condo is simply wrong and could be what didn't exactly help anyone's condo sale s in AP. Example - an empty nester coouple from Morriss Plains - retired. Grandkids. House in Florida, Morris Plains, kids in PA and Virginia. They want to summer in AP most of the time, keep house in Morris Plains and head to Fl in October. They have $1m to spend. Why were they turned off? A) they were trying to accomoodate their lifestyle (grandchildren, kids..) B) unable to select a unit or had limited choice -take it or leave it C) unsure of what the grandkids would do (pool was a real plus) d) time frame for development One of these days there's going to be a huge outlet center off 66 and the parkway. You have a few new motels that sprung up from the collingswood circle to 66. You hvae a few more that want space. Seaview Sq is continuing to grow. That and a ride like a carousel next to it. I see your point about the Freehold Mall... But i guess Monmouth Mall didn't see as a draw or people, otherwise why would have wente through and built it. They've had quite a few years between now and when the boardwalk additions were added on. Ah, who knows! Carnival rides, cotton candy, and others are good attractions. However, it's kind of obvious that isn't the image the boardwalk is going for. Like it or hate it, that appears to be what's going on! - Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park Chamber Names Carousel Awards
I have the feeling MM is not planning to cater to a boardwalk filled with children. When they first showed their plans in City Council there was nothing for children except a candy store with walls of candy. They did not mention the water park that was proposed in the app. MM in my opinion is gearing the boardwalk to the people they will need to fill the Condos that will be built on Ocean Ave. The Condos being built are for couples with no children. Exactly. I wish it were different. Do you really picture a boardwalk filled teens and screaming kids, while there are million dollar condos only feet away on the other side of Ocean ave? I highly doubt it. But again, we will have to wait and see what happens. As the post up top mentions, MM didn't mention anything about a water park really. They said they had ideas for it, but i'm guessing it's nothing major or else they would have had it ready. Maybe it wasn't mentioned beasue it's not part of the summer 08'? - Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park Chamber Names Carousel Awards
These are just thoughts, i have no idea if they're true. Maybe the freehold mall has their double decker carousel becasue they can afford it? Does the Freehold Mall bring in a large profit? From the area, and the percentage of high end stores, i'm guesing yes. It may have been an attraction, something done becasue they could afford to do it. Weather it makes money or it doesn't, it brings in people. But that could only have been done becasue the mall in general brings in enough extra money. Maybe Monmouth doesn't do well enough to spend on such an attraction. One that may not give back much. - Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.

Karpinski has worked to try to save the long-vacant Metropolitan Hotel on Asbury Avenue and the downtown Charms Building. She said in a telephone interview that she was very encouraged that Gary Mottola, president of investments for Madison Marquette, the beachfront redeveloper, is going to try to save the Charms Building. It seems as though they're really committed to moving forward, even in this economic and real estate environment, Karpinski said. The historical society also is sponsoring an Asbury Park memorabilia showcase in the library's reading room. The exhibit contains memorabilia from society trustee Don Stine's Antic Hay book business that will be displayed in a 13-foot glass showcase in the library room, Stine said. There's going to be Victorian, business and rustic souvenirs, like deer-foot letter openers, old plates, boot lace tighteners, Victorian ceramics, clamshell purses and a sort of traveling makeup mirror, Stine said. Why not demolotion the Metropolitan and build something identical but new in its likeness. A Metropolitan style hotel with up to date ammenities might do very well. My guess is the Charms is more worth saving structurally. I know that isn't ideal to the preservationists but it is a happy medium. It also takes into account that this stuff doesn't take place in a vacuum, it requires money. NOticeably absent from any of these discussions on saving buildings is an accurate assessment of the cost to restore and what the payback would be. I know payback isn't important for some but it matters for anyone who is going to put one nickel into a project. Yahoo! These so-called parents, should have sought help, for themselves! The vicious cycle of adults, using drugs in front of kids, is the height of irresponsibility! Even then, there is plenty of help offered in M County. My sis works for the PTI program (Pre trial intervention). Kids and adults from AP, rumson etc - unemployed, the doctors, teachers, moms and dads , single parents and more. So lets stop thinking about how unfair the system is and more so what someone is doing wrong. You can $500k per year and wind up in front of her cause you have a fancy lawyer or $5,000 per year and still see her with a court appoined lawyer, counselor and programs to help. It's about time to stop blaming the system (of course there are problems) but - there is still that OPPORTUNITY to be a benefit to a community vs benefiting FROM the system. That's why there is jail.
