I have a 128K leased line and would like to backup the link with ISDN.I would like to as well setup the ISDN so that if the leased line reaches a certain percentage of usage the ISDN kicks in and sorts of loads balance the line until it returns below the threshold. I have a 3640 with a PRI at the cental site and 2500's at the remote sites. I am looking for a few config examples. I took the test today and failed. 731 but 751 necessary. I can not believe that I failed it. I thought I had studied everything perfectly and with work and all There is a secret section...I can not say it because of that stupid NDS but that it not been for that one section I would have passed. just on that section I got 33%. Of well, I can take it again on Monday. Why is this so much the case? Every time I take these tests I am always like 20 or 30 points away on the first attempt. I even took the CISSP. Got 682 but 700 was necessary out of 1000 points and 225 questions. Another weekend poor because all of my money is going to these tests and lonely because all I do is study study study. Blah! Weird Problem [7:24919]
My setup as follows I got VLAN and my IP range is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/25 and gateway being xxx.xxx.yyy.254/20 .I got a Win2k machine with IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.129 and am able to ping the router and other systems. Now I plug in a Sun system with Ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.130 ,also specify /etc/defaultrouter xxx.xxx.yyy.254 and I am UNABLE to ping router or any other system.But am able to ping the Win2K system. Other hand if I put my SUN system as DHCP..I am able to get IP address(different subnet address) and ping default router. Since i thought subnet address might be out of range I put in another Win2k system and assinged the xxx.xxx.xxx.130 and it works fine. Why is the variation between WIN2K and Sun system and would appreciate any solution?Do I need to do any thing on Sun system for it to see the default on other subnet? My /etc/netmask file is intact. I'd like to have a few "expert" opinions regarding the use of the native ios vs. hybrid ios. I've been told by a cisco engineer not to use it unless the hardware or software feature is ONLY supported in that code train. The concern is that native IOS has less field exposure and he and others consider it a work in progress. Anyone out there running native code on their networks? We are running Native IOS in our digital imaging network. We were told by our integrator that because we were just doing basic IP routing, we would be fine. I have been told by Cisco that there are a few bugs with the web server portion of the code as well as the SNMP management on older versions of Cisco Works. I like this version A LOT! I like being able to configure my 6500 without having to jump between the switch and router modules. This was the exact path I took and I passed with an 810 first try. I've tried on two occasions and it sucks, the box re-booted intermittently and had to revert to the hybrid code. Mike, I GOT IT TO WORK DLSW using frame in direct encapsulation,no ip addresses or routes in sight!!! Thanks for all your suggestions. I didn't use the local dlci but did change the llc2 mappings to point to the dlci closest to the frame switch for each spoke router. So if rtr1 is spoke and its local dlci is 201 and the switch dlci for rtr1 is 102 then i used: rtr1 ! dlsw local-peer dlsw remote-peer 0 frame-relay interface Serial0/0 201 dlsw bridge-group 1 ! interface Serial0/0 no ip address encapsulation frame-relay clockrate 200 frame-relay map llc2 201 ! interface FastEthernet0/0 no ip address duplex auto speed auto bridge-group 1 and the same thing the other end. many thanks again for helping me. Are you sure that it is reporting the same serial # that is on the chassis? In my experience, the only way I could get the serial number remotely is by entering the "snmp-server chassis-id" command into the config manually. I just double-checked on a 3600, 7200 and 7500 (running various 12.x code) and the serial number I get with show diag or show version aren't the same as the one I entered manually (based-on physical verification). Note: I also did this on my IOS-based switches (cat3500's) even though the show version command will give you this info - "System serial number: x" Bottom-line is that when you open a case w/TAC and they ask for a serial number of the system, they're interested in the one on the chassis not some internal component. Hi Priscilla, The device doing the pinging is a UNIX box connected to another switch. I have also tried pinging from a PC connected directly to the 1924. The device being pinged has been a PC, Notebook, NT Server. I also like Micheal's advice. I did telnet onto the switch, under the Port Addressing Menu, I erased the MAC address (thinking that would place it in the same state of a never used port). After the switch port showed "unaddressed", I tried pinging the host on that port. The response as instant. Now, I am going to try this on a port thats never been used (need to arrange this). I will then see how long the 1924 takes to learn the MAC. I also thought I would try this in-house once I get a brand new switch. PS All devices are on the same IP subnet. I'm not up on legalese, but this does not sound good. I currently have Version 12.1(8a)E4, running on my 6509. I have had no problems, except for a little bit of a headache in the intial config, setting up the vlans, and such(the vlan has to be avtive in a database, before using). We opted for the native so that we can run SLB on the switch as well, and totally remove the LD416's which were handling the load balancing. So far so good, no unexpected reboots, or things of the such, pretty stable as of yet. Hi, If you have 4 routers within an confederation r1,r2,r3&r4. R1 has and EBGP connection to another As so therefore has the bgp confederation id and confed peer statements on it. My question is do all of the IBGP router (r2,r3&r4) require the confed statements on them even if they are only IBGP routers?? 14 days to go!! Starting to have some fun !! I have a 6509 in the lab running native and a couple of customers also running native without troubles. The bottom line is Cisco is going in the native mode direction and my understanding is that eventually there will be no CATOS as Cisco would rather not support both. If your comfortable with configuring 29xx and 35xx switches you will be comfortable with native IOS. I recently beta tested a new line card that only runs in native and I think you will only see more of this in the future. I think you are right. After I posted my message, I tried to hand verify it, but, I honestly do not know which is the serial number. There are so many stickers tags and numbers! On top of that, I NEVER found the same serial number on the chassis as the motherboard part even after looking through all of those tags. I think you are right and that the serial number is JUST for the internal parts. If you think about it, in the config you specify bgp process as confed id, which means if you need to peer over IBGP you actually peer with confed ID and not the real AS number. In all of the examples I mentioned I could have included output from our router to show what I was seeing but I didn't in the interest of brevity. Perhaps the particular show command I was using is a little looser in its matching than other elements of IOS would be. Also, I think we're using different definitions for the word 'originated'. I use it to differentiate between routes truly originating from a system and routes passing through a transit AS. In our situation AS1239 is one of our providers. In the case of ^1239 .* you mention that it matches only routes originated in AS1239, but this is not the case, at least with the show command. ^1239$ will do this, but the previous expression seems to match a string beginning with 1239 followed by a space and then 0 or more characters, which is as you stated. That means that expression should match the path 1239, but it will also match 1239 5234 5234 701 20, for example. Actually, in my testing (again, with only the IOS show command) ^1239 .* would match any transit routes but would not match a path that contained only AS1239, or ^1239$. It thought that was interesting and it wasn't what I expected to see. Who knows, it may be a feature, but IOS appears to count that space as a literal space, and since there is no space following ^1239$ it isn't matched. I have just configured the scenario below on my lab and it appears that the internal BGP peers do not need to know the Confed id or peers. If I look at the bgp table all the correct routing info is getting passed i.e. an internal bgp router still sees in its bgp routing table that networks have came from certain confeds i.e. as path = (8) (7) 254 23. C2500 DRAM problem [7:24954]
I've got some problem with a couple of 16MB DRAM modules for my C2500 routers. I bought non Cisco memories for my lab routers, but I get Parity Error alot and the router just reboots. I also bought non Cisco flash modules, but these seems to work just fine. Is there some way to run a verbose check on the memory so that I can sort out if the problem is the router or the memory? I'd also appretiate if someone could point out what's so special with these DRAM memories since Cisco wants so many bucks for them. Prioritizing Protocols???? [7:24959]
We have a network with one 2522 and 10 1601 routers set up in a hub and spoke arrangement. Our connections are relatively small 56k Frame Relay. My question is. Is there a way to give certain applications a higher priority to the bandwidth available and have the other apps use what ever is left over. Our main application runs a telnet session back to a unix box here at the main location. There are usually about 3-4 people at the remote location. Whenever anyone sends a large print job, does a large FTP, or is browsing the web it makes everyone else's telnet session at the remote site VERY SLOW. Since the telnet session is priority #1 for our business, I would like it very much if I could make my routers understand that. Any ideas Thanks in advance for your replies!!! discontiguous networks are the same as discontiguous space on a hard drive Think of it as used space that does not coincide with the data beside it... so, with that in mind, 12345678910 is contiguous. 1649103257 is not 10.10.1 10.10.2 10.10.3 10.10.4these are contiguous 10.10.1 192.168.1 10.40.48 10.90 these are not and a multiplexer is a device that creates one channel for data to flow through from a group of smaller channels...These are commonly used to mux t's together to create say a 3 meg pipe to the internet or a 6meg pipe, etc... Imagine satcom newsfeeds coming into a station at 9600baud. I'm not sure of the capabilities on those 1601s but I think you have at least two options: Priority Queueing and Custom Queueing. Can those things do Weighted Fair Queueing? If so, they already should be doing an okay job with this. Can the 1601s do policy routing? If so, you could create a route-map that sets the IP precedence of your telnet traffic higher. Then it will get more bandwidth when it hits the WFQ. If you can't do that, I'd try custom queueing. If you're *really* serious about your telnet traffic getting absolute priority over anything else no matter what then you might also try priority queueing. For configuration examples just look on www.cisco.com. If you need help with the configs just let us know. hello , I wanted to know if the IOS on PIX 501 is the same as the higher models. The product description on Cisco's site do not specify it.I want to learn PIX and 501 is the cheapest but I want to know if the commands I learn and experience i gain will be good enough to setup and administer a higher model of PIX. Thanks for carrying it through. It's very helpful. And to reiterate what you said in your first message, this one (for passive mode when the 192.3.10.10 server is on the local network) is risky because it has to be non-specific: access-list 110 permit tcp any gt 1023 host 192.3.10.10 gt 1023 So maybe it's best to tell the users not to use passive mode. But then they better not have personal firewalls that don't allow the session setup from the server! I have actually run into situations where there were so many firewalls (network-wide and personal) that we couldn't use FTP. We used AFP over TCP instead. (which by the way is much more secure for another reason, which is that it encrypts a random number provided by the server with the password. FTP sends the password in clear text.) When troubleshooting a typical T1 with telco and they say they have your CSU looped. Are they actually able to give the CSU inside the Cisco Router a command to be looped or are they really just looping the smart-jack/demark ? I've been on the phone with telco and seen that when they claim to have the CSU\DSU looped, what they are actually doing is looping the smart-jack/demark, which will loop all traffic from the csu back on itself. Most of my experience with this is using external CSUs. However, from my understanding, they telco gives some "magic" command that is like a universal signal to CSUs to put them in loop mode. But they can indeed loop the CSU separately from the SmartJack as there have been many times where I've worked with the telco to solve wiring problems inside of a building (between the smartjack and the CSU). I agree with the other posters here. Let us know what those 1601 support. Priority queuing with work, but Weighted-Fair (which should, as the other poster said, handle this already) is the best choice for this. Weighted-Fair is setup in a way the high bandwidth traffic doesn't choke small bandwidth applications (like Telnet). Otherwise Priority or Custom queueing are your only other options. (AFAIK) Mike W. I know on the routers, when setting up the AAA, you should put "enable" at the end of the line that sets up the TACACS, in case you lose your network connectivity or the like. aaa authentication login default tacacs+ enable That way when TACACS isn't available it will rollover to the enable password for access. Yes, the telco can loop the CSU in a Cisco, sounds like you just had a tech that didn't know what they were doing. Sam, I haven't logged onto 501 yet. But my guess is it is similar to 506, which I have worked on, and should support same CLI. It supports 3DES as well. It does support 6.x ios I believe. Switching issues [7:24986]
Group, I have several ports on my 4003 switches that get frequent %PAGP-5-PORTFROMSTP and %PAGP-5-PORTTOSTP errors. The ports that are flapping all have workstations attached to them, but I don't see any difference between these workstations and any others. Anybody have any clues? Do I need to give more info? Jay, The telco can loop your CSU/DSU either internal or external. They can only loop the CSU portion of your CSU/DSU. Interesting bandwidth figure for an ethernet. I assume you are not *really* running a 1 Mbps ethernet? I believe the bandwidth parameter on an ethernet port defaults to 1 Kbps (maybe in some IOS versions it needs to be configured manually?), so this has presumably been configured to 1024 Kbps for some reason. This is unlikely to cause problems directly (it won't change the "real" speed of the port), but depending on your setup it could cause routing problems. And it is very likely to cause confusion on the part of anyone looking at the output - a txload of 234/255 on an ethernet is truly bad, if accurate, but a five minute output rate of 94 bps is not a problem. If your real bandwidth is 10 Mbps then your real txload is 23/255 which is not such a big deal. However, here is some info that seems to imply that it does use the standard Cisco Pix Command Line Interface. http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/pcat/fw.htm Note how it says minimum software version 6.1(1). As for, will it help you for higher level Pixes, yes it should. However, one key feature that is not available on the 501 and 506 is there is not fail over. Configuring failover and stateful failover is not really difficult, but it is something totally new if you just trained from a 501, 506, or lone 515. Our 6509 just a last week came with 12.8(1)E and we were real skeptical of it because it was early release but has been running fine but only in a test environment for now. I will let you know if we decide to stick with it. What were the requirements for the access-list? did you run through it with a few samples? the kinds of samples that I use to test access-lists are: 1. the target network and hosts to be specfically permitted/denied 2. networks and hosts 'close' to the target networks (especially if there's a range involved) 3. other networks and hosts with the same classful prefix 4. repeat the above 3 for protocol types flow and order in ACL's are always very important, and I've learned that there are many different ways to skin the same cat, but there are also ways that *look* correct but contain other holes or restrictions that make the ACL incorrect. The most recent example is the "permit even networks" thread that has been going around. I agree that collision cannot happen on a serial interface. I accidentally deleted the original post - ah well. We have a similar problem here - which we are hoping to solve by moving the unix box to where the users are :-) However I assume you have users at the central site who are using it as well. I suspect that your overall proportion of telnet traffic is probably pretty low, so you could probably implement priority queueing to give your telnet traffic absolute priority with very little risk of locking out other traffic. However, it could just be that telnet packets are getting queued behind large ftp packets and getting hit by a large latency - priority queueing won't cause a telnet packet to preempt a large packet already on the wire (which is probably just as well). If priority queueing doesn't fix the problem, perhaps you should look at some of the QoS techniques used to minimise latency for voice? For example, frame relay fragmentation? I am completely biased (since I am one of the owner's of NLI), but I do know of over 150 CCIE's that have used the ccbootcamp labs to get their CCIE...I havent heard of one CCIE yet that has used the other labs to get their #. :) Also, the bootcamp labs are constantly being updated and added on to.
