RE: CCIE market FLOOD !! was: Current Wait time on the lab [7:12953]

2001-07-19 Thread Buri, Heather H

Robert,

Ditto here on the Cabletrons! We have an 8600 that has caused our network
to go to hell-in-a-handbasket on more than one occasion.
Cabletron/Enterasys Engineers never seem to have a good explanation for the
problems either. I am waiting for the day when we can pull that thing out
and replace it with a 6509.

I have had the same problems with Cabletron/Enterasys SSR equipment.

Its seems that some companies put money into QA and some rely on old
customers to do it for them

They have retracted and pulled back from many areas they were to develop
 and
promised developments were not delivered. I worked for one of their
resellers, what we were promised one minute was not delivered the next.

Support fell like a stone as did staff their end, we could not give away
their kit and there was a flight to quality i.e. Cisco/Nortel. In
 addition
their power supplies were suspect and we were forever returning their
 S24's
and S48's, if it was not for that then it was their ASICS and Ports
 packing
up. Once one went others soon followed.

We had software problems with Black Diamond Blades and you had to be very
careful what blades and software you mixed which was never made to clear
until it all went wrong. Put two of those beasts in a room and it sounded
like a fully loaded B29 on takeoff. Quality control was not that good.
 If
you have got Extreme (unless you are a reseller) you will never be
unemployed, you will always be replacing them and having to tweak them.
Best of British mateOh by the way dI hope you are not using
ESRP...you'll have lots of fun with that watching the kit go up and
 down
and take other vendors/peoples kit out!

How do you figure Extreme is in trouble? Monday's WSJ had an article
 about
the tech stocks slump and Extreme, Foundry, as well as a few others were
noted as part of the 15% that was generally considered to have turned
 the
  corner and shown improvement.

Just curious, I hadn't heard anything about them being in trouble, on
 top
of that we just bought a boatload of their switches (which do seem so
 far
to work very well by the way)...

I need my car washed! :) Do you need any fries (chips) with that?

for me so far. Please don't get me wrong I am not trying to intimidate
anyone. Maybe I was unlucky and I got the hard test but let me say just
this: don't bother showing up at the test center unless you are VERY well

I got a couple of poorly worded questions and one that was not in the exam

I thought I was going to do better by I was wrong. Anyway a pass is pass no

The Syngress Published book CCNP Remote Access Study Guide

has an excellent section (Ch2) on ALL of the relevant Cisco Router

I find that its better, if you can afford it, to not stick with just one
source but go to multiple sources not only to get a balanced view but
also
to find other information omitted by another publisher/author. The
future
gains always (hopefully) outweigh the present costs.

After all, all these books are just an authors/publishers interpretation
of
the Exam Objectives. Its pot luck what questions you get in the exam so
best to cover ALL the bases if you can.

  Hello all..

Passed the BCRAN with an 898 today. not a bad exam. A couple of
vague questions (or questions that seemed to have more than one
correct
answer but only one answer was asked for). Even took time to write
some
comments and finished in 35 minutes.

One HUGE gripe: The Cisco Press book had a huge chapter on the Cisco
700.
The Exam Cram Remote Access book had a pared down chapter on the 700
just
highlighting the stuff you need to know for the exam (which was nice).
I
had maybe 2 or 3 questions about the 700 series. BOTH books had a
single,
small paragraph on the 1600 series tho saying it's for branch not SOHO
and
takes a WIC card. THAT'S IT! I went through all 4 quizzes in both of
the
Boson BCRAN exam 1 and 2 (over 400 questions) and I kept getting
hammered
with questions about the Cisco 1600 and what interfaces the different
 models
had (something neither book had any details about). Lucky for me I
tried
 to
take note, instead of blowing it off, because I got as many if not more
questions about Which model of 1600 has a 56K/ISDN/Serial port than I
 did
about the Cisco 700. I have to say that I'm disappointed that there
were
 so
many questions about the 1600 series compared to the 700 series, yet
the
Cisco Press and Exam Cram book barely mentioned them I can't
believe
the Cisco Press book dedicated a very lengthy chapter to the 700 with
so
 few
questions on the exam while virtually ignoring the 1600! KUDOS TO
BOSON
 for
making practice exams that not only are a good simulation of the real
 exams
but also covered material that exam creators didn't even include in
their
own study book (Cisco!). I owe my 898 to Boson for hammering me with
1600
questions and letting me get the info I needed for the real exam while
I
 was
  practicing for it.

Now on to Support for CCNP then CID for CCDP Woohoo!

Thanks to everyone for the group.. seeing people in the group
talking
and passing exams motivates me to keep going!

CDP-4-NVLANMISMATCH: Native vlan mismatch detected on port [dec]/[dec]
Explanation This message indicates that the native VLAN is different from
the one set on at least one of the neighboring ports; [dec]/[dec] is the

I think it would help if I gave you the scenario I was envisioning. I would
like to plan a network where we have 2 seperate routers connecting to our
ISP or perhaps 2 seperate ISP's. Lets assume 1 ISP, 2 routers ,each with its
own full T1 line for simplicity. If 1 router died, I'd like to keep the
internet connection alive without changing any of the clients default
gateways. I figured HSRP would be good to apply here becuase it acts as 1
virtual router. But, would that mean that 1 router would be idle at all
times not allowing me to ever get more than 1.5MB bandwidth? Or this extra
idle T1 line just the cost of redundancy in this case?

Marc wrote in message

HSRP is for router redundancy, not WAN circuit redundancy. If you wanted
to
have internet or WAN circuit redundacy, you would of course use two lines,
have equal-cost routes (two default routes...etc) and that's all that's
involved. HSRP not needed for WAN load-balancing/redundancy...

 Sam Sneed wrote in message

I was doing a little research on HSRP and had a question for anyone who
 has
configured it. I read the whole RFC 2281 and could not find my answer
 there.
If you have two routers running HSRP with T1 lines to the internet, 1 is
 the
standby and one is the active. Does all traffic only go through the
active
at all times unless it dies? If so isn't it a waste not ever utilizing
the
T1 line thats on standby (of course until the active fails)?

If bandwidth exceeded 1.5MB would the second router kick in to share the
load or would it totally take over?

With these 2 routers acting as a single virtual router would throughput
ever be able to exceed 1.54 MB assuming each has its own T1 connection?

  thanks

Do you already have Routing TCP/IP Volume One? It covers OSPF, RIP,
IGRP, and EIGRP as well as route maps, all of which you have to know for
some of the CCNP tests.

For BGP, I'd recommend two books:

BGP4: Interdomain Routing in the Internet by John W. Stewart III.
Short but truly excellent little book!

Internet Routing Architectures, 2nd Edition by Sam Halabi.

Another good book for CCNP/CCIE level study is Bridges, Routers, and
Switches for CCIE's by Andrew Bruce Caslow.

There are probably too many good books to mention, but I've found those
to be indispensable.

Hey everyone,

I am currently studying for my CCNP, and should have it knocked off in
a
couple of months. For study material so far, I have pretty much just
been
using the Cisco Press study guides and CCO.

I am just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for good books,
especially involving routing protocols such as OSPF/BGP/EIGRP, for
someone
at the CCNP level looking towards gaining enough knowledge for the
CCIE
written and eventually CCIE lab (gulp). I am after not just a study
guide,
but for more detailed info - not targetted at a specific exam but more
to
increase the detail of my knowledge in these areas.

A couple that I am looking at (that you guys have talked about in this
list):
-Routing tcp/ip vol 2 by Cisco Press
-Top down network design by Priscilla

It would be great if you could make some suggestions as to what good
books
you have found.

Thanks in advance!

Sam.

Passed Switching today -- 3 Down, 1 to Go! [7:10108]

2001-06-27 Thread Buri, Heather H

Well, I went and took my switching exam this morning at 9 AM. Passed with a
score of 912! I used the Cisco Press book to study (plus OJT). The exam
was pretty straight forward. I only had two questions that I thought were
poorly worded.

Minimum passing score - 699, 64 questions, one and a half hours to complete.

I had few questions on multicasting and hsrp. Lots of questions on when to
utilize different switch types (know your hardware and where to use in the
network). Know VLAN operation. Know how multilayer switching works.

If anyone has any questions that do NOT violate NDA :-) I will be happy to
answer them for you.

question on configuring a isdn dialer rotary group [7:8360]

2001-06-13 Thread Buri, Heather H

Hi Gang,

I have been presented with a project to configure a remote isdn connection.
We will be using ISDN to connect a remote site into our central site. I
have two separate ISDN lines at each end which I want to be able to combine
(multilink) for a total bandwidth of 256.

I believe this can be done using a rotary group but I have never configured
this before. I am used to configuring legacy ddr. So I have been looking
on the Cisco site and in documentation cd and there are a couple of
questions I have.

First, here is some basic information on my two routers. The central site
is composed of a Cisco 3640 with a bri card and internal NT1's. The remote
site will have a Cisco 2611 with a bri card and internal NT1's. I will be
connecting two bri's on each end. The remote end will be calling in to the
central site but no one on the central site will be calling out.

I have found the following information on the Cisco site regarding
configuring legacy ddr:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/12cgcr/dial_
c/dcbri.htm#21895

I have a couple of immediate questions. One is, do I need to identify the
SPID's and if so, where? Normally I would define these under the bri
interface. By the way, my switch type is basic-ni on both ends.

Also, under the interface dialer would I need to define a dialer map
statement for each separate channel? i.e.

dialer map ip 1.2.3.4 name centralsite broadcast 111222
dialer map ip 1.2.3.4 name centralsite broadcast 111222
dialer map ip 1.2.3.4 name centralsite broadcast 111222
dialer map ip 1.2.3.4 name centralsite broadcast 111222

Jennifer,

Congrats!! That is a great score! I am taking mine next Wednesday so I am
keeping my fingers crossed.

P.S. Regarding VLAN operations, my guess would be how VLAN's work in
general. i.e., configuring VLAN's and inter-VLAN routing maybe?

I did it890 on my test and there was one question that I didn't even
answer. It had two screens and was a fill in the
blank where I was supposed to write in domain name, ip address and the vlan
numbers and name. I hit the wrong
button and went to the next question...darn... It was relatively an easy
easy exam and only took me 20 minutes.

My scores were:

CGMP100%
Cisco Fundamentals 100%
Multicast100%
Multilayer Switching 83%
Spanning Tree 75%
Switching Interconnectivity 90%
Troubleshooting 100%
Trunking 75%
VLAN Operations 66%

My next test will be the routing one. But first I want to figure out what
the heck falls under the catagory of vlan
operations. With no experience, I will be sadly lacking in skills if I
don't know that.

Thanks everyone for all the wonderful discussions. That and tim boyes and
sybex and the cisco university helped me
achieve this. And my very very very patient husband.

question regarding spanning tree [7:6485]

2001-05-30 Thread Buri, Heather H

Hello.

I don't really have a problem so much as I am trying to get a better
understanding of how Spanning Tree works. I am currently studying for my
switching exam and am reviewing Spanning Tree. I have the following
statement from the Cisco course manual and in the case of redundant paths to
the root bridge, it states In order to choose which port will be forwarding
data and which ports will be blocking data, the switch looks at two
components in the BPDU, as follows:

1. Path Cost

2. Port ID

The switch looks at the path cost first to determine which port is receiving
the lowest cost path. If the path cost is equal, as in the case of parallel
links, the bridge goes to the port ID as a tie-breaker. The port with the
lowest port ID forwards and all other ports block.

I decided to verify this on one of my 4006's which connects to my 6509
(which is the root) and here is what I found:

pet4006_8 (enable) sh spantree statistics 1/2 1
Port 1/2 VLAN 1

SpanningTree enabled for vlanNo = 1

BPDU-related parameters
port spanning tree enabled

designated_cost 0
designated_bridge00-d0-01-98-5c-00
designated_port 0x8087
top_change_ack FALSE
config_pending FALSE
port_inconsistency none

PORT based information statistics
config bpdu's xmitted (port/VLAN)0(8702816)
config bpdu's received (port/VLAN) 831061(1662121)
tcn bpdu's xmitted (port/VLAN) 1(1)
pet4006_8 (enable) sh spantree statistics 1/1 1
Port 1/1 VLAN 1

SpanningTree enabled for vlanNo = 1

BPDU-related parameters
port spanning tree enabled

port_id 0x8001

designated_bridge00-d0-01-98-5c-00
designated_port 0x80c8
top_change_ack FALSE
config_pending FALSE
port_inconsistency none

However, as you can see from the above output, Port 1/2 is the port chosen
to forward and it appears to have a higher port ID number. Can someone
please explain what I am missing here?

Hi Paul,

You were right! Thanks for clearing that up for me. I feel kind of silly

it is nice to know the answer!

Its the received port id
You should find that port 1/2 is connected to the 6509 on a lower port than
port 1/1
do a sh cdp neigh to confirm

Hope this is correct

Hi, all,

After several attempts (both written and lab exams) and 14 months of
part-time study, I got number 7364 in San Jose Wednesday, but it wasn't
without scary moments.

My advice to the group, besides the usual:

1. Read thru the archives and know the answers to the questions asked. I
believe it's more helpful than anything else.
2. Get a study partner. Not only you get to learn from each other, but
when you explain things to others, it helps you think thru things that
you're not sure of.
3. Know where things are, or could be, in the CD. I had to use the CD a
lot, but it didn't take much time for me to find things that I had never
heard of before the exam.

I also attended ECP1 which was great. You get to meet with people from all
over the country who share the same goal. Plus, I learned much more during
Day 5 (troubleshooting) than anything else.

My home lab is set up especially for ccbootcamp's lab scenarios.

Well, good luck to you all and don't even think about giving up!

RE: PASSED CCNA [7:1878]

2001-04-25 Thread Buri, Heather H

You can pass the test using the Cisco Press book ICND as Brett states below.
I also used Lammle's study guide. I felt between these two resources, I was
very well prepared for the test. I also had the benefit of having some
light router access although not a lot of heavy configuration experience.
If you are able to get any hands on, it will make taking the test easier.
But my thoughts are that the CCNA is mainly a rote memorization test so it
is possible to pass without any hands on at all.

Just my thoughts on it! Good luck on your exam.

Well, when I took my test in January, I did not have one question on the 700
series. I studied it alot too because I thought there would be some. We
use the 800 series for our SOHO users. Oh well, never hurts to know
something, huh? :-)

I don't know if I just got lucky or if they have removed the 700 series from

It was not as difficult as I thought but then my score wasn't as high as it
should have been. There wasn't as much token as expected but that's OK. My
networking experience definitely helped out but then so did the Todd Lammle
CCIE book and the Casco book as well as a ton of information from Cisco's
site.
I finally figured out that the RIF length field is inclusive of the RC and
RD. Only one question on that any how.
:)
I wish I could remember better what was on the test but it's all a blur now,
kind of like post traumatic stress syndrome or whatever it's called.

Passed BSCN today

2001-04-05 Thread Buri, Heather H

I got an 827. Not the greatest score but could have been worse. My weak
areas were OSPF and BGP (no big shock there since I don't work with either
of these on a day to day basis). The job I am in now is strictly supporting
an EIGRP environment. Overall, I did not think the test was terribly
difficult.

RE: ISDN switch type in Korea

For the router configuration, the switch type should be configured as
primary-net5 which covers European, New Zealand and Asia ISDN PRI switches
(per Cisco documentation). I am not sure where your provider is getting his
information. I suspect he does not know what he is talking about. I would
question him further on this point and maybe ask to speak with someone else.

RE: Cisco Aironet 340

2001-03-27 Thread Buri, Heather H

Dennis,

That is basically what it is...wireless networking. The Aeronet card will
slide into the PCMCIA slot on your laptop. You will also have to have
wireless hub(s) installed. At least one for each floor where you want to
implement the wireless cards. We use two per floor here where I work so
that all users can obtain a good reception from pretty much anywhere on the
floor. You will also probably want to employ the wireless encryption (WEP)
so that someone cannot pick up your network from outside your building or
your elevator lobby area. ;-)

We use Lucent technology here so I am not as familiar with the Cisco product
line but I believe most (if not all) of the wireless use the same standard.

Subject: Course Recommendation

Hello all,
I have been given the go ahead to attend a one week course of my
choice, to be scheduled in May. In the meantime I have been doing home
study via books recommended on the groupstudy.com page.
I have been doing research and am leaning towards a course offered by
globalknowledge; Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices .
My background; I have CCNA 1.0 (is it even valid anymore?), but no
hands on. I am now in an environment where I must quickly bring myself
up to speed on switches, 1900-2800 series, and basic router config. I
am particularly interested in V-LAN.
Can anyone provide perspective on my choice, or recommend other
avenues? I very much want to get the most bang for the buck and be
able to apply the knowledge upon course completion.

All thoughts, comments, advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

2001-03-21 Thread Buri, Heather H

I want to thank everyone for your insights and suggestions. I guess I did
not mean to come across as complaining too much. I really had high hopes
for this class and maybe I overprepared for the course because I wanted to
get a lot out of it. I had already read the Cisco BSCN course book as well
as was 3/4 of the way through Doyle's book before my class started. I know
they have to cover a lot of the basics but I just thought one day on RIP was
a little much.

I will take Priscilla's and Pam's suggestion and write a letter to Global
Knowledge and let them know about my experience. Maybe they will let me
audit the course at a later date. I still plan on attempting the test in
April after some more review. I have a small home lab so I may be able to
simulate some of the BGP stuff at home.

Anyways, I did not realize that you could find out about the instructor's by
calling Global directly. I registered online and they don't give much
information there. I will remember this for the future. Also, our
instructor never mentioned you could get a refund or reschedule during the
first day. But I will bring this up in the letter to Global Knowledge.

Thanks everyone and this is a great list with lots of knowledgeable people
on it!

Yipe. I just now noticed this thread, and it breaks my heart to hear
stories like this.

Global Knowledge classes are guaranteed. I'm not sure Heather could get
her money back inasmuch as she did sit the entire class, but I am certain
they will let her sit the class again with a more experienced instructor.
Hey, I'm teaching BSCN in Arlington, VA for Global Knowledge the week of
April 23 . . . not scheduled for any Texas trips any time soon.

For future reference, Global Knowledge WILL refund your money or
reschedule you if you return your materials to the instructor by the end
of the first day. Instructors are supposed to emphasize that during the
introductory remarks.

When you schedule the class, talk to the customer service people and ask
them about the instructor. The best questions to ask are, "how long has
this person been a Cisco-certified instructor," and "how many times has
this person taught this class." The instructor schedules are published
about a month in advance of the classes.

I hope you won't get a bad impression of all Global Knowledge instructors
because of this one. I have had the distinct pleasure of auditing BSCN,
CATM and OSPF/BGP classes since joining Global Knowledge, and the
instructors in each case were outstanding in every way, but beyond
outstanding in terms of technical knowledge. And I'm a tough critic,
believe me. For example, how about having CATM taught by someone who
participated in the development of the protocols as a member of the ATM
Forum working groups? Or BGP taught by someone whose consulting practice
focuses on designing networks for national ISPs. And of course, the
groupstudy.com founder, Paul Borghese, is a Global Knowledge instructor.

I say she should go for it. Most training partners are very concerned with

Correct. However, make sure that your bandwidth and delay perameters are
equal for the paths over which you want to load share or else it will not

Were currently using EIGRP as our routing protocol and we now have two

understanding of EIGRP is correct, then I shouldn't have to make any

RE: Economic downturn--Impact on Cisco Certification aspirations?

2001-03-20 Thread Buri, Heather H

In my opinion, it depends on how you view your role and your capabilities.
Sure, if you narrowly define your role as working for dot.com's and
start-up's then sure it would affect you. But if you see your role and
capabilities as movable, to say...a corporation environment then no.
Enterprise networks are not going away. If anything, they are becoming more
complex and will need support staff who are capable of supporting them.
Just never stop learning and you will be fine. I thought this discussion
already came up over the weekend. :-)

RE: How to delete a specific entry in access list ?

2001-03-08 Thread Buri, Heather H

In order to edit an access list, the easiest thing to do is to copy the
access list to notepad, make your changes then remove the access list in
global config mode with the "no access-list" command and then paste in your
new access list.

I believe that is the only way you can "edit" an access list. However, if I
am wrong I am sure someone will let me know. :)

If no way, what's the more efficient alternative ?

Thanks in advance.

RE: next test?

2001-03-07 Thread Buri, Heather H

Well, my own experience was I took BCRAN as the first of the CCNP tests.
Mostly because at the time I was doing a lot of ISDN BRI, Frame Relay and
NATing on my job so it just made sense to take it.

I plan on taking the BSCN this month and then the switching and
troubleshooting exams in that order.

I went according to a commonly recommended track: CCNA, BSCN, BCMSN, BCRAN,
CIT and that was fine for me, but I have seen some people take BSCN as their
second course/test and not enjoy it at all. I would recommend that you
consider your experience and think about taking the next course (between
BSCN, BCMSN and BCRAN) based on what you already know and/or enjoy. I think
that the very practically-oriented people I know prefer to take BCMSN or
BCRAN before BSCN. YMMV

I know that both Mentor Technologies and Global Knowledge offer a 5 day

the course which also preps you for the BCMSN test if your goal is to get
your CCNP. It is a good course for hands-on experience with Cisco switches

strictly Cisco products. If you are looking for a general switching class,

2001-03-06 Thread Buri, Heather H

The default timer is 10 minutes and I would not recommend changing the
default timer to never (exec-timeout 0 0) unless you have a very good reason
for doing so. I recently came across a situation in our network where
someone had changed the default timeout on the vty lines to never (why, I
have no idea) but it caused all of our vty sessions on this particular
router to become populated and we were unable to telnet to the router. I
had to go to the Console to terminate each of the sessions (and then I
immediately changed the exec-timeout back to the default)

RE: Portfast

2001-03-01 Thread Buri, Heather H

John,

It should not cause any problems provided that the device in question is not
using any kind of dual uplinks. Basically, all portfast does is allow that
port to skip through a majority of the Spanning Tree protocol checking
process. Obviously this is okay for end stations and servers.

We have portfast turned on all the ports in our closet switches and we have
wirless hubs on all floors as well as users who have mini hubs at their
desks and we have not experienced any problems thus far.

In the below website it says not to have portfast on if you connect
switches, hubs, or routers. I understand that point but what if a user
connected a mini-hub (Ex. Linksys EtherFast 8-Port 10/100 Desktop Hub)
or unmanaged mini-switch (Ex. Farallon NetLINE 10/100 switch) so that he
could connect multiple computers. Would this cause any problems? Thank
you!

http://www-1.cisco.com/warp/public/473/12.html

Note: The portfast feature should never be used on switch ports that
connect to other switches, hubs, or routers. These connections may cause
physical loops
and it is very important that spanning tree go through the full
initialization procedure in these situations. A spanning tree loop can
bring your network down. If portfast
is turned on for a port that is part of a physical loop, it can cause a
window of time where packets could possibly be continuously forwarded (and
even multiply) in
such a way that the network cannot recover.

Question on Packet Shaper install

2001-02-28 Thread Buri, Heather H

I have a question for those of you who have worked with Packet Shapers. We
recently installed one at our site last Thursday via a directive from
Headquarters. We placed it between our Cabletron 8600 SmartSwitch (inside
interface on the PacketShaper and straight through cable) and our Cisco 4500
router ethernet interface (outside interface and cross-over cable). All was
working well until this morning when the packet shaper stopped passing
traffic. It has not yet been configured to shape traffic, it was only in
traffic discovery mode at present. However, after some troubleshooting, I
noticed the ARP entries on the Cisco 4500 had become corrupted.

I powered off the Packet Shaper and cleared the ARP table in the Cisco 4500
and traffic began flowing normally again.

My question is, has anyone had similar issues with a Packet Shaper install?
I will be contacting Packeteer technical support for assistance as well as
our Headquarters Networking staff since they are responsible for the
configuration on the box. However, I thought I would ask here since I
thought someone on this list may have come across a similar problem. Could
an speed/duplex autonegotiation mismatch cause this to occur?

I will be taking it offline this evening after production hours to examine
the configuration more closely.

Thanks!

RE: IP Protocol 89?

2001-02-23 Thread Buri, Heather H

Chris,

I believe all the routing protocols have their own unique port identifiers.
I am reading Doyle's Routing TCP/IP Vol 1 right now and it discusses all of
the routing protocols in some detail. RIP uses port 520, IGRP/EIGRP use
protocol 9. Doyle does give examples of packet captures on each of the
different protocols and the port/protocol does indeed show up in the routing
protocol packet header. Overall, I am finding this an extremely good book.
I can see now why so many recommend it.

I don't have a lot of experience manipulating the routing protocols in such
a way as you mention below but I don't see why it could not be done based on
the fact that they do use known port/protocol id's.

Someone else may be able to shed some additional light on this for you.

In trying to understand OSPF in much more detail, I am reading RFC 2328.
Several times Mr. Moy refers to OSPF as " IP Protocol 89". I checked the
"RFC/Port Number" page that I reference often
(http://www.networksorcery.com/enp/default0301.htm) and found that indeed
OSPF is IP Protocol 89. I have not seen this before. Sure, I've worked with
TCP/UDP port numbers, but this is the first time I've paid attention to the
fact that the protocols themselves have numbers too. This is interesting.

Should I look at 89 as a number that can be manipulated as I would 23
(telnet) or 69 (tftp)? Can someone explain where these numbers are used? Are
they found in headers? As networkers, are we concerned with these numbers?
Does anyone commonly filter based on a protocol's number? Or is getting this
granular an exercise in futility for a network engineer?

Thanks,
 Chris

RE: Cisco Space Phone

2001-02-15 Thread Buri, Heather H

Here it is:

From: "Will Cox" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
To: Recipient list suppressed
Sent: Wednesday, February 14, 2001 9:15 AM
Subject: Is this COOL or what? Cisco Space Phones!

 Enjoy the read!!

Yesterday, at approximately 4:09 PM Central, the first phone call from
space was made. Astronaut Marsha Ivin, using a Cisco IP SoftPhone on the
Space Shuttle Atlantis, made the first and second telephone calls EVER
from
 space.

NASA has had CallManager software in a development lab since prior to
the Selsius acquisition by Cisco. The Selsius, and now second-generation
Cisco phones, have been unusually tolerant to the satellite delay between
Mission Control in Houston and the Shuttle. Brett Parrish, lead NASA
engineer on this project, holds our CallManager software in very high
regard, especially since finding it works over satellite delay without
modification between our hardware-based phones (tested to up to 1.2
seconds
of delay). Brett has stated that it is very unusual for an application to
work out of the box with this type of delay.

Since certification for flight is an extremely long and, at times,
extremely political process, NASA decided to use SoftPhone for the first
trial. The main reason for this is that the laptop PCs used by NASA
astronauts have already been certified, and getting a software process in
flight is much easier than launching hardware. Extensive testing was
performed at NASA using custom-built equipment to replicate the delays and

LOS (Loss Of Signal) conditions common with the Space Shuttle. Minor
modifications were made to CallManager (inclusion of a service parameter)
and to SoftPhone (change in the order of events for call acceptance) by
Cisco development to address TAPI issues with delay, and SoftPhone was
approved for a trial flight. Unfortunately, this was not an official goal
of the Space Shuttle Atlantis, which simply meant testing was not
scheduled, and not guaranteed. Despite the lack of official stature for
this test, optimism that SoftPhone would be tested was very high as the
Astronauts had seen the application and were demanding that it fly with
the
Shuttle. Imagine being out in space with no way to call home! Imagine
being
IN space and being able to make a normal phone call anywhere! Despite all
the technological advances, separation is very apparent when out in space.

Never has an Astronaut been able to pick up a phone and place a call.

At approximately 4:00PM Central the opportunity to make a call using
the
Cisco IP SoftPhone became available. Marsha Ivin, with a brief break in
official tasks, asked Space Command if there was time to try the IP
SoftPhone. The Flight Commander gave the go-ahead and the test was on!.
Marsha booted up the SoftPhone and at approximately 4:09PM made a call to
the Flight Director. The call went from her SoftPhone software through a
VG-200 gateway, over an FXO port, through a PBX to the phone on the Flight

Director s desk. They held a long and animated conversation (though what
was actually discussed is unknown) and at the end Marsha was granted
permission to call one of the 7960 phones in the POC (Payload Operations
Center). She made the call and it was answered by Brett Parrish. Marsha
asked So how do you like getting the second ever call from space? . After
speaking with Brett, Steve Schadelbauer of NASA was put on the line and he

spoke with Marsha. The conversations with Marsha lasted for several
minutes. Both Brett and Steve commented at how clear the conversation was
much better than the audio quality found on the radio conversations with
 the Shuttle.

It was amazing at how much of a non-event this was. History in the
making but no scrambling, no trouble-shooting. IT JUST WORKS !!! Most of
the credit goes to Brett and Steve for their tireless testing and
replication of the Shuttle s environment. On the other hand, this is truly

an illustration of how Cisco s IP Telephony makes geographic location
irrelevant to audio communications. Anywhere, and that means ANYWHERE, you

have IP connectivity you have a COMMUNICATIONS network, which includes
telephony. The network works, no excuses!

This is a tribute to many things. Brett and Steve put our software and
hardware through the ringer at NASA subjecting it to delay, loss of
signal,
and bit error rates well above what would be found even between Mission
Control and the Shuttle. As a result, this historic moment was a non
event.
Also as a result, future applications are so real that only official
testing and approval stand in the way. We have successfully tested 7960
phones in the Space Station and in the Shuttle and they work better than
the SoftPhone. It will be a while before we see them as mission approval
is
a long, and yes political, process. As an example, safety testing must

I think what they are trying to say is that by using vlsms you are getting
as much efficiency as possible out of the addressing scheme (using a .252
for instance) so that using multipoint does not gain you anything. After
all, you still have to have a seperate address within the subnet for each
circuit. A .248 has six useable hosts, using multipoint with it would not
gain you much. I would prefer to use point-to-point and use a /30 mask.

What is the rational behind this statement. I would think that using a long
subnet mask (i.e. 255.255.255.248 ) would not waste any ip address!

RE: NAT and FTP

2001-02-08 Thread Buri, Heather H

Hi George,

I came across the following information regarding FTP and NAT from the Cisco
website. It sounds like this could be what was going on:

CSCdk03906

When running NAT and encryption, FTP fails, but Telnet and ping work. The
TCP checksum is not calculated correctly. Removing NAT or encryption
resolves the problem.

For performance reasons, decryption is not done until the packets are
switched to the output interface. This caused the problem with IOS NAT,
because NAT may need to do the payload translation for certain protocols.
The affected protocols include FTP and NetBios, for example.

Here is the complete URL for the article:

Hi all!
We came across a strange problem. We'we been doing NAT from ethernet to
serial,
all the things seem to be working, except FTP. Problem got resolved
after turning off tcp header compression on serial. I couldn't find any
notion of it on CCO. Is it a bug, or I'm missing somethings obvious?

RE: Duplex setting

2001-02-05 Thread Buri, Heather H

Robert,

This is true. I have recently done some tweaks on our new Cisco 4006's
which we have installed in the network closets. Included in the items I
researched were: Enabling portfast on ports connected to servers and
workstations. Disabling Etherchannel and trunking (which I found out, are
set to autonegotiate by default on Cisco Switches). And also, hardsetting
the port switches to match the capabilities of the NIC cards. I had to do
this for most of my Linux/Unix users as they were seeing the errors more
than my PC users. Here are some links to some information from the Cisco
website that I came across while doing my research:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/3.html

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/46.html

Hope this information helps!

I've read in messages, and in books, about setting the duplex to full/half
vs. auto. I knew that it was flaky, but no specifics. We had a machine
losing connectivity, and it turns out this was the reason. I changed the
port from auto to full duplex, and everything seems to work great. Is there
any specific information as to what can cause this? For instance, maybe the
auto-detect detects it as half then changes to full, causing a brief outage
in connectivity?

Eric,

Here is a link that will explain the SNMP protocol.

Without getting into too much detail, it is basically used for management
purposes of devices such as routers, switches, hubs, printers, servers, etc.

RE: ISDN error

2001-01-31 Thread Buri, Heather H

Dennis,

Just from quick inspection, one obvious problem is you are getting invalid
SPID messages. I would contact your local provider and verify the SPIDs
against what they gave you.

I also notice that on your dialer map statement, your number does not match
up with either of the SPID's you typed in for your SPID statements.

There may be something else that I am missing but I would start there.

For this exam, would you recommend that the explanation of BGP provided in
the BSCN books is sufficient or would you recommend Basaam Halabi's book,

people recommend for this exam?

I currently have the BSCN book by Thomas M. Thomas published by McGraw Hill

already found too many typos in it. I expect a few, but this is ridiculous.
Can anyone recommend the book by Cisco Press for BSCN?

If you want illegal software and cracks for pirated software ~~ go to crack
sites.

If you want book reviews ~~ go to Amazon.com (their reveiws are awesome)

If you want to learn about real world scenarios, can't figure something out,

want to expand upon certification topics, need help understanding areas,
stuff like that the groupstudy list is great. There are a bunch of really
awesome resources here!
I would suggest for certifications, buy the books and read them. If you
don't understand something, try to research it, and if you still can't
figure it out write to the list. That way atleast you can approach the list
and get the most out of it. I enjoy reading other peoples e-mails. You can
see real world issues and their fix (which can often prove extremely usefull

when you encounter the same issue). For what it's worth that's my 2 cents.
