Robert, Ditto here on the Cabletrons! We have an 8600 that has caused our network to go to hell-in-a-handbasket on more than one occasion. Cabletron/Enterasys Engineers never seem to have a good explanation for the problems either. I am waiting for the day when we can pull that thing out and replace it with a 6509. Support fell like a stone as did staff their end, we could not give away their kit and there was a flight to quality i.e. Cisco/Nortel. In addition their power supplies were suspect and we were forever returning their S24's and S48's, if it was not for that then it was their ASICS and Ports packing up. Once one went others soon followed. We had software problems with Black Diamond Blades and you had to be very careful what blades and software you mixed which was never made to clear until it all went wrong. Put two of those beasts in a room and it sounded like a fully loaded B29 on takeoff. Quality control was not that good. If you have got Extreme (unless you are a reseller) you will never be unemployed, you will always be replacing them and having to tweak them. A couple of vague questions (or questions that seemed to have more than one correct answer but only one answer was asked for). Even took time to write some comments and finished in 35 minutes. One HUGE gripe: The Cisco Press book had a huge chapter on the Cisco 700. The Exam Cram Remote Access book had a pared down chapter on the 700 just highlighting the stuff you need to know for the exam (which was nice). I had maybe 2 or 3 questions about the 700 series. BOTH books had a single, small paragraph on the 1600 series tho saying it's for branch not SOHO and takes a WIC card. THAT'S IT! I went through all 4 quizzes in both of the Boson BCRAN exam 1 and 2 (over 400 questions) and I kept getting hammered with questions about the Cisco 1600 and what interfaces the different models had (something neither book had any details about). Lucky for me I tried to take note, instead of blowing it off, because I got as many if not more questions about Which model of 1600 has a 56K/ISDN/Serial port than I did about the Cisco 700. I have to say that I'm disappointed that there were so many questions about the 1600 series compared to the 700 series, yet the Cisco Press and Exam Cram book barely mentioned them I can't believe the Cisco Press book dedicated a very lengthy chapter to the 700 with so few questions on the exam while virtually ignoring the 1600! KUDOS TO BOSON for making practice exams that not only are a good simulation of the real exams but also covered material that exam creators didn't even include in their own study book (Cisco!). I owe my 898 to Boson for hammering me with 1600 questions and letting me get the info I needed for the real exam while I was practicing for it. Now on to Support for CCNP then CID for CCDP Woohoo! If 1 router died, I'd like to keep the internet connection alive without changing any of the clients default gateways. I figured HSRP would be good to apply here becuase it acts as 1 virtual router. Marc wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... HSRP is for router redundancy, not WAN circuit redundancy. If so isn't it a waste not ever utilizing the T1 line thats on standby (of course until the active fails)? If bandwidth exceeded 1.5MB would the second router kick in to share the load or would it totally take over? With these 2 routers acting as a single virtual router would throughput ever be able to exceed 1.54 MB assuming each has its own T1 connection? thanks EOM NOTICE - This message contains information intended only for the use of the addressee named above. question on configuring a isdn dialer rotary group [7:8360]
Hi Gang, I have been presented with a project to configure a remote isdn connection. We will be using ISDN to connect a remote site into our central site. I have two separate ISDN lines at each end which I want to be able to combine (multilink) for a total bandwidth of 256. I believe this can be done using a rotary group but I have never configured this before. I am used to configuring legacy ddr. So I have been looking on the Cisco site and in documentation cd and there are a couple of questions I have. First, here is some basic information on my two routers. The central site is composed of a Cisco 3640 with a bri card and internal NT1's. The remote site will have a Cisco 2611 with a bri card and internal NT1's. I will be connecting two bri's on each end. The remote end will be calling in to the central site but no one on the central site will be calling out. I have found the following information on the Cisco site regarding configuring legacy ddr: http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/12cgcr/dial_ c/dcbri.htm#21895 I have a couple of immediate questions. One is, do I need to identify the SPID's and if so, where? Normally I would define these under the bri interface. By the way, my switch type is basic-ni on both ends. Also, under the interface dialer would I need to define a dialer map statement for each separate channel? i.e. dialer map ip 1.2.3.4 name centralsite broadcast 111222 dialer map ip 1.2.3.4 name centralsite broadcast 111222 dialer map ip 1.2.3.4 name centralsite broadcast 111222 dialer map ip 1.2.3.4 name centralsite broadcast 111222 Here is what I have as far as a config so far on my remote router: interface BRI1/0 description **to 84.252 bri 0/0** no ip address encapsulation ppp dialer rotary-group 1 dialer-group 1 isdn switch-type basic-ni isdn spid1 2814650193000 4650193 isdn spid2 2814650194000 4650194 ppp authentication chap pap callin ppp multilink ! interface BRI1/1 description **to 84.252 bri 0/1** no ip address encapsulation ppp dialer rotary-group 1 dialer-group 1 isdn switch-type basic-ni isdn spid1 2812974325000 2974325 isdn spid2 2812974326000 2974326 ppp authentication chap pap callin ppp multilink ! interface BRI1/2 no ip address shutdown isdn switch-type basic-ni isdn T203 1 ! interface BRI1/3 no ip address shutdown isdn switch-type basic-ni isdn T203 1 --More-- interface Dialer1 ip address 152.x.x.241 255.255.255.252 encapsulation ppp dialer in-band dialer idle-timeout 1200 dialer map ip 152.x.x.242 name centralsite broadcast 7133860442 dialer map ip 152.x.x.242 name centralsite broadcast 7133860443 dialer-group 1 ppp authentication chap ppp multilink ! Jennifer, Congrats!! That is a great score! I am taking mine next Wednesday so I am keeping my fingers crossed. P.S. question regarding spanning tree [7:6485]
Hello. I don't really have a problem so much as I am trying to get a better understanding of how Spanning Tree works. I am currently studying for my switching exam and am reviewing Spanning Tree. I have the following statement from the Cisco course manual and in the case of redundant paths to the root bridge, it states In order to choose which port will be forwarding data and which ports will be blocking data, the switch looks at two components in the BPDU, as follows: 1. Path Cost 2. Port ID The switch looks at the path cost first to determine which port is receiving the lowest cost path. If the path cost is equal, as in the case of parallel links, the bridge goes to the port ID as a tie-breaker. The port with the lowest port ID forwards and all other ports block. I decided to verify this on one of my 4006's which connects to my 6509 (which is the root) and here is what I found: pet4006_8 (enable) sh spantree statistics 1/2 1 Port 1/2 VLAN 1 SpanningTree enabled for vlanNo = 1 BPDU-related parameters port spanning tree enabled stateforwarding port_id 0x8002 port number 0x2 path cost4 message age (port/VLAN) 0(20) designated_root 00-d0-01-98-5c-00 designated_cost 0 designated_bridge00-d0-01-98-5c-00 designated_port 0x8087 top_change_ack FALSE config_pending FALSE port_inconsistency none PORT based information statistics config bpdu's xmitted (port/VLAN)0(8702816) config bpdu's received (port/VLAN) 831061(1662121) tcn bpdu's xmitted (port/VLAN) 1(1) pet4006_8 (enable) sh spantree statistics 1/1 1 Port 1/1 VLAN 1 SpanningTree enabled for vlanNo = 1 BPDU-related parameters port spanning tree enabled stateblocking port_id 0x8001 port number 0x1 path cost4 message age (port/VLAN) 1(20) designated_root 00-d0-01-98-5c-00 designated_cost 0 designated_bridge00-d0-01-98-5c-00 designated_port 0x80c8 top_change_ack FALSE config_pending FALSE port_inconsistency none However, as you can see from the above output, Port 1/2 is the port chosen to forward and it appears to have a higher port ID number. [7:4207] Hi, all, After several attempts (both written and lab exams) and 14 months of part-time study, I got number 7364 in San Jose Wednesday, but it wasn't without scary moments. My advice to the group, besides the usual: 1. Read thru the archives and know the answers to the questions asked. I believe it's more helpful than anything else. 2. Get a study partner. Not only you get to learn from each other, but when you explain things to others, it helps you think thru things that you're not sure of. 3. Know where things are, or could be, in the CD. I had to use the CD a lot, but it didn't take much time for me to find things that I had never heard of before the exam. I also attended ECP1 which was great. You get to meet with people from all over the country who share the same goal. Plus, I learned much more during Day 5 (troubleshooting) than anything else. My home lab is set up especially for ccbootcamp's lab scenarios. Well, good luck to you all and don't even think about giving up! -Rog FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=4212t=4207 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: PASSED CCNA [7:1878]
You can pass the test using the Cisco Press book ICND as Brett states below. I also used Lammle's study guide. I felt between these two resources, I was very well prepared for the test. I also had the benefit of having some light router access although not a lot of heavy configuration experience. If you are able to get any hands on, it will make taking the test easier. But my thoughts are that the CCNA is mainly a rote memorization test so it is possible to pass without any hands on at all. Just my thoughts on it! Good luck on your exam. Passed BSCN today
I got an 827. Not the greatest score but could have been worse. My weak areas were OSPF and BGP (no big shock there since I don't work with either of these on a day to day basis). RE: Cisco Aironet 340
Dennis, That is basically what it is...wireless networking. The Aeronet card will slide into the PCMCIA slot on your laptop. You will also have to have wireless hub(s) installed. At least one for each floor where you want to implement the wireless cards. We use two per floor here where I work so that all users can obtain a good reception from pretty much anywhere on the floor. You will also probably want to employ the wireless encryption (WEP) so that someone cannot pick up your network from outside your building or your elevator lobby area. ;-) We use Lucent technology here so I am not as familiar with the Cisco product line but I believe most (if not all) of the wireless use the same standard. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
I want to thank everyone for your insights and suggestions. I guess I did not mean to come across as complaining too much. I really had high hopes for this class and maybe I overprepared for the course because I wanted to get a lot out of it. I had already read the Cisco BSCN course book as well as was 3/4 of the way through Doyle's book before my class started. I know they have to cover a lot of the basics but I just thought one day on RIP was a little much. I will take Priscilla's and Pam's suggestion and write a letter to Global Knowledge and let them know about my experience. Maybe they will let me audit the course at a later date. I still plan on attempting the test in April after some more review. I have a small home lab so I may be able to simulate some of the BGP stuff at home. Anyways, I did not realize that you could find out about the instructor's by calling Global directly. I registered online and they don't give much information there. I will remember this for the future. Also, our instructor never mentioned you could get a refund or reschedule during the first day. But I will bring this up in the letter to Global Knowledge. Hey, I'm teaching BSCN in Arlington, VA for Global Knowledge the week of April 23 . . . not scheduled for any Texas trips any time soon. For future reference, Global Knowledge WILL refund your money or reschedule you if you return your materials to the instructor by the end of the first day. Instructors are supposed to emphasize that during the introductory remarks. When you schedule the class, talk to the customer service people and ask them about the instructor. The best questions to ask are, "how long has this person been a Cisco-certified instructor," and "how many times has this person taught this class." The instructor schedules are published about a month in advance of the classes. I hope you won't get a bad impression of all Global Knowledge instructors because of this one. I have had the distinct pleasure of auditing BSCN, CATM and OSPF/BGP classes since joining Global Knowledge, and the instructors in each case were outstanding in every way, but beyond outstanding in terms of technical knowledge. And I'm a tough critic, believe me. For example, how about having CATM taught by someone who participated in the development of the protocols as a member of the ATM Forum working groups? Or BGP taught by someone whose consulting practice focuses on designing networks for national ISPs. And of course, the groupstudy.com founder, Paul Borghese, is a Global Knowledge instructor. ;-) Pamela On Tue, 20 Mar 2001, Priscilla Oppenheimer wrote: At 05:05 AM 3/20/01, Circusnuts wrote: No Way Priscilla... RE: How to delete a specific entry in access list ?
In order to edit an access list, the easiest thing to do is to copy the access list to notepad, make your changes then remove the access list in global config mode with the "no access-list" command and then paste in your new access list. I believe that is the only way you can "edit" an access list. RE: Portfast
John, It should not cause any problems provided that the device in question is not using any kind of dual uplinks. Basically, all portfast does is allow that port to skip through a majority of the Spanning Tree protocol checking process. Obviously this is okay for end stations and servers. We have portfast turned on all the ports in our closet switches and we have wirless hubs on all floors as well as users who have mini hubs at their desks and we have not experienced any problems thus far. Thank you! http://www-1.cisco.com/warp/public/473/12.html Note: The portfast feature should never be used on switch ports that connect to other switches, hubs, or routers. These connections may cause physical loops and it is very important that spanning tree go through the full initialization procedure in these situations. A spanning tree loop can bring your network down. If portfast is turned on for a port that is part of a physical loop, it can cause a window of time where packets could possibly be continuously forwarded (and even multiply) in such a way that the network cannot recover. _ FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Question on Packet Shaper install
I have a question for those of you who have worked with Packet Shapers. We recently installed one at our site last Thursday via a directive from Headquarters. We placed it between our Cabletron 8600 SmartSwitch (inside interface on the PacketShaper and straight through cable) and our Cisco 4500 router ethernet interface (outside interface and cross-over cable). All was working well until this morning when the packet shaper stopped passing traffic. It has not yet been configured to shape traffic, it was only in traffic discovery mode at present. However, after some troubleshooting, I noticed the ARP entries on the Cisco 4500 had become corrupted. I powered off the Packet Shaper and cleared the ARP table in the Cisco 4500 and traffic began flowing normally again. My question is, has anyone had similar issues with a Packet Shaper install? I will be contacting Packeteer technical support for assistance as well as our Headquarters Networking staff since they are responsible for the configuration on the box. However, I thought I would ask here since I thought someone on this list may have come across a similar problem. Could an speed/duplex autonegotiation mismatch cause this to occur? I will be taking it offline this evening after production hours to examine the configuration more closely. Thanks! RE: IP Protocol 89?
Chris, I believe all the routing protocols have their own unique port identifiers. I am reading Doyle's Routing TCP/IP Vol 1 right now and it discusses all of the routing protocols in some detail. RIP uses port 520, IGRP/EIGRP use protocol 9. Doyle does give examples of packet captures on each of the different protocols and the port/protocol does indeed show up in the routing protocol packet header. Overall, I am finding this an extremely good book. I can see now why so many recommend it. I don't have a lot of experience manipulating the routing protocols in such a way as you mention below but I don't see why it could not be done based on the fact that they do use known port/protocol id's. Someone else may be able to shed some additional light on this for you. Heather Buri -Original Message- From: Kane, Christopher A. Sure, I've worked with TCP/UDP port numbers, but this is the first time I've paid attention to the fact that the protocols themselves have numbers too. This is interesting. Should I look at 89 as a number that can be manipulated as I would 23 (telnet) or 69 (tftp)? Can someone explain where these numbers are used? Are they found in headers? RE: Cisco Space Phone
Here it is: - Original Message - From: "Will Cox" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Recipient list suppressed Sent: Wednesday, February 14, 2001 9:15 AM Subject: Is this COOL or what? Cisco Space Phones! Enjoy the read!! Yesterday, at approximately 4:09 PM Central, the first phone call from space was made. Astronaut Marsha Ivin, using a Cisco IP SoftPhone on the Space Shuttle Atlantis, made the first and second telephone calls EVER from space. NASA has had CallManager software in a development lab since prior to the Selsius acquisition by Cisco. The Selsius, and now second-generation Cisco phones, have been unusually tolerant to the satellite delay between Mission Control in Houston and the Shuttle. Brett Parrish, lead NASA engineer on this project, holds our CallManager software in very high regard, especially since finding it works over satellite delay without modification between our hardware-based phones (tested to up to 1.2 seconds of delay). Brett has stated that it is very unusual for an application to work out of the box with this type of delay. Since certification for flight is an extremely long and, at times, extremely political process, NASA decided to use SoftPhone for the first trial. The main reason for this is that the laptop PCs used by NASA astronauts have already been certified, and getting a software process in flight is much easier than launching hardware. Extensive testing was performed at NASA using custom-built equipment to replicate the delays and LOS (Loss Of Signal) conditions common with the Space Shuttle. Minor modifications were made to CallManager (inclusion of a service parameter) and to SoftPhone (change in the order of events for call acceptance) by Cisco development to address TAPI issues with delay, and SoftPhone was approved for a trial flight. Unfortunately, this was not an official goal of the Space Shuttle Atlantis, which simply meant testing was not scheduled, and not guaranteed. Despite the lack of official stature for this test, optimism that SoftPhone would be tested was very high as the Astronauts had seen the application and were demanding that it fly with the Shuttle. Imagine being out in space with no way to call home! Imagine being IN space and being able to make a normal phone call anywhere! Despite all the technological advances, separation is very apparent when out in space. Never has an Astronaut been able to pick up a phone and place a call. At approximately 4:00PM Central the opportunity to make a call using the Cisco IP SoftPhone became available. Marsha Ivin, with a brief break in official tasks, asked Space Command if there was time to try the IP SoftPhone. The Flight Commander gave the go-ahead and the test was on!. Marsha booted up the SoftPhone and at approximately 4:09PM made a call to the Flight Director. The call went from her SoftPhone software through a VG-200 gateway, over an FXO port, through a PBX to the phone on the Flight Director s desk. They held a long and animated conversation (though what was actually discussed is unknown) and at the end Marsha was granted permission to call one of the 7960 phones in the POC (Payload Operations Center). She made the call and it was answered by Brett Parrish. Marsha asked So how do you like getting the second ever call from space? . After speaking with Brett, Steve Schadelbauer of NASA was put on the line and he spoke with Marsha. The conversations with Marsha lasted for several minutes. Both Brett and Steve commented at how clear the conversation was much better than the audio quality found on the radio conversations with the Shuttle. It was amazing at how much of a non-event this was. History in the making but no scrambling, no trouble-shooting. IT JUST WORKS !!! Most of the credit goes to Brett and Steve for their tireless testing and replication of the Shuttle s environment. On the other hand, this is truly an illustration of how Cisco s IP Telephony makes geographic location irrelevant to audio communications. Anywhere, and that means ANYWHERE, you have IP connectivity you have a COMMUNICATIONS network, which includes telephony. The network works, no excuses! This is a tribute to many things. Brett and Steve put our software and hardware through the ringer at NASA subjecting it to delay, loss of signal, and bit error rates well above what would be found even between Mission Control and the Shuttle. As a result, this historic moment was a non event. Also as a result, future applications are so real that only official testing and approval stand in the way. We have successfully tested 7960 phones in the Space Station and in the Shuttle and they work better than the SoftPhone. It will be a while before we see them as mission approval is a long, and yes political, process. As an example, safety testing must

After all, you still have to have a seperate address within the subnet for each circuit. A .248 has six useable hosts, using multipoint with it would not gain you much. I would prefer to use point-to-point and use a /30 mask. RE: NAT and FTP
Hi George, I came across the following information regarding FTP and NAT from the Cisco website. It sounds like this could be what was going on: CSCdk03906 When running NAT and encryption, FTP fails, but Telnet and ping work. The TCP checksum is not calculated correctly. Removing NAT or encryption resolves the problem. For performance reasons, decryption is not done until the packets are switched to the output interface. This caused the problem with IOS NAT, because NAT may need to do the payload translation for certain protocols. The affected protocols include FTP and NetBios, for example. RE: Duplex setting
Robert, This is true. I have recently done some tweaks on our new Cisco 4006's which we have installed in the network closets. Included in the items I researched were: Enabling portfast on ports connected to servers and workstations. Disabling Etherchannel and trunking (which I found out, are set to autonegotiate by default on Cisco Switches). And also, hardsetting the port switches to match the capabilities of the NIC cards. I had to do this for most of my Linux/Unix users as they were seeing the errors more than my PC users. Here are some links to some information from the Cisco website that I came across while doing my research: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/3.html http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/46.html Hope this information helps! RE: ISDN error
Dennis, Just from quick inspection, one obvious problem is you are getting invalid SPID messages. I would contact your local provider and verify the SPIDs against what they gave you. I also notice that on your dialer map statement, your number does not match up with either of the SPID's you typed in for your SPID statements. There may be something else that I am missing but I would start there.
