You need to download the Kernel-Win4Lin2-2217.patch file, and then patch the 2.2.17 kernel, and build your own. There was a message on the win4lin mailing list that reported that you could use the 2.2.17-21mdk kernel source with the following changes: 1. Install kernel-source and kernel-headers rpms from the mandrake CD 2. get the linux/arch/i386/kernel/apm.c file from the 2.2.17 kernel archive (you can download that single file from my web server if you like, http://perfect.yi.org/apm.c) 3. Place that file in the appropriate directory (linux/arch/i386/kernel/) 4. Patch the kernel with the 2.2.17 generic win4lin patch 5. Edit include/linux/tasks.h and change NR_TASKS to 3500 6. make menuconfig select the win4lin option. 7. make dep ; make clean ; make bzImage I get the kernel to compile ok with this method, but it doesn't run correctly, so I use the non-mandrake 2.2.17 kernel source from www.kernel.org. You might be able to successfully get this to work with this method with one of the earlier kernels. I do make the #5 change to the native kernel source, and I also edit the EXTRAVERSION line in the Makefile to identify my patched kernel. Does this set up all the kernel modules correctly? Ron, Installing a kernel RPM will automatically replace /boot/vmlinuz, so you just have to edit lilo.conf and run lilo. When I update, I use the kernel source and headers RPMS and rebuild. Before I do this I rename, for example, /usr/src/linux-2.2.17 to /usr/src/linux-2.2.17-21mdk, otherwise it'll get overwritten. I have several kernel versions in /usr/src: 2.2.17-21, -25, -27 etc., so if I get problems with one I can easily switch. Procedure as follows: 1. As root, cd to /usr/src/linux-2.2.17-27mdk and run "make xconfig ; make dep; make bzImage; make modules; make modules_install;" 2. cd to /usr/src/linux-2.2.17-27mdk/arch/i386/boot and copy bzImage to vmlinuz-2.2.17-27mdk. I then copy this to /boot and to my dos c:\linux folder (so I can use "C:\Linux\loadlin.exe C:\Linux\vmlinuz-2.2.17-27mdk root=/dev/hde7 ro" to get to linux from config.sys or Win98 desktop). 3. Copy /usr/src/linux-2.2.17-27mdk/System.map to /boot/System.map-2.2.17-27mdk. 4. Edit /etc/lilo.conf to add the new kernel (leave the old ones for safety), run /bin/lilo and reboot. DrakConf complained about version of modutils, so I went to do the usual for my AWE64, that is sndconfig - guess what? no sndconfig. So I copied modules.conf and isapnp.conf from 7.2 (before kernel make dep), expecting sound after reboot - nada. I'll add some lines from /var/log/messages - perhaps that'll give someone a clue... Ron, I have CUPS and acroread - prints just fine to my HP DeskJet 720C. If you are in the USA, that is true. Default print setup is Letter, 8.5 x 11 inches. However, if you change the Paper from Letter to A4 (say), it still leaves the page size at 8.5 x 11 inches, with the result that it won't print. Manually change the page size to 8.27 x 11.69 inches and you are in business again. Since Acrobat is proprietary software, Mandrake cannot patch it (no source) and make a mdk RPM. Only Adobe can correct this original coding error, and until they do, they cannot expect any use of their Linux Acrobat Reader 4 to print out documents outside the USA. You're quite right, Ron - I hadn't tried to change the page size - but then you don't have to. At the bottom of the Print dialog, in PostScript Options, select "Fit to Page" and it'll do just that - if your printer is A4 as mine is too, it prints A4 perfectly. That's how acroread works - it doesn't let you alter the original in any way, while you can view and print as you like. All was OK after reboot - no corruption, just crazy file size reporting. 3. Konqueror just dumped me off the machine while it did an unprovoked hard reset. KDE2 may look pretty but it's buggier than Win98 - not worthy of release status. [Cooker] 7.2beta rc1 Installation notes
7.2beta rc1 Installation notes From: Peter Ruskin To: "Cooker" This is the pre-KDE2.0 version - I'm still trying to rsync the latest version, having diverted to Sweden since Norway closed. I did a clean expert developer install, not that I'm an expert, but I like the choices. 1. Quadruplicated KDE menu items was a puzzle that mysteriously disappeared all by itself. 2. NumLock still not working in X. /etc/X11/xinit.d/numlock should point to /var/lock/subsys/numlock instead of /etc/sysconfig/numlock. 3. Alsa still doesn't support the internal AWE64 midi device (AWE32-0.4.3 (RAM512k) when not using alsa. 4. Without alsa, system event sounds and primary multimedia work fine (after the modification to startkde), but there is no sound in ClanBomber, for instance. ClanBomber has sound if I install alsa, but LBreakout hasn't. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, alsa is dead until it supports AWE64. 5. KDE Control Centre is plain daft! When I adjust the time and date formats, it doesn't allow all the changes. I can change "%l:%M:%S %p" to "%H:%M:%S" and "%d/%m/%Y" to "%d/%m/%y", but not both at the same time. I still haven't found where KDE stores this information. Hope this is fixed in 2.0! Overall impression - very good - and the install went very sweetly - I boot SCSI and use Promise UDMA66, so I still have to remember, on every install, to hand-amend lilo.conf at the end of install, else I'll never get in. I would like the same opportunity to change the boot-floppy's lilo.conf parameters. As it is, the boot-floppy is useless to me. append=" ide2=0xd800,0xdc02 ide3=0xe000,0xe402" is quite a lot to type in at bootup \:op -- ------ Peter Ruskin Wrexham, UK KDE - the professionals' choice --

[Cooker] Cooker 7.2rc1 installation notes
Well, rsync finally finished over the weekend and I did a 'British' hd install à la Ron Stodden. I congratulate you Cookers for a great installation. A few points follow: 1. I kept getting the "There was an error installing packages:" message for locales-es, ~pl, ja, netscape-polish, ~japanese, ~spanish, etc., none of which I had selected (expert install - workstation). 2. I have a Promise Ultra66 controller which _was_ recognised, but I couldn't boot - I had to use my 7.1 boot floppy to get in and do repairs. It got a little bit further before it hung - reported finding hde, hdg and hdh - then nothing. I had to remove the 'append=" ide3=autotune ide2=autotune"' line from lilo.conf to make it work. I put back in its place 'append=" ide2=0xd800,0xdc02 ide3=0xe000,0xe402'. I used to also have 'optim' on this line. Is that still valid? I'm very impressed with the still rough-around-the-edges KDE. There must be some things it doesn't like though, because I made a terrible mess of it doing a manual upgrade - support, then libs, base, etc. But the Cooker install makes a very good job of it -- ---------- Peter Ruskin Wrexham, UK KDE - the professionals' choice --

[Cooker] Mandrake kernels
Would it be too difficult to build scsi support into the standard kernels? My boot disk is scsi, so I always have to roll my own kernels - not much of a problem except for the time, with the frequent updates from cooker. I always use matroxfb in my kernels (I have a Matrox G400-32). Since 2.2.17-1 this has not been possible. The kernel documentation fb/matroxfb.txt advises _not_ to use the VESA framebuffer. With the latest kernels I have to build without framebuffer so that I can boot - with framebuffer I get some message about framebuffer trying to use wrong memory location (doesn't get into any logs so I have to rely on my memory for that). I have gone back to using 2.2.17-0.24mdk and initscripts-4.97-43mdk, which serves me well but I would prefer to move forward instead of back. Well said! On Thu, 31 Aug 2000, David Dennis wrote: Can I just soapbox once more briefly - there is nothing more annoying and lame within the linux realm than these moronic microsoft-esque 'bla is now deprecated' messages or scenarios involving chunderous deprecation. First, one that i think is from read hat and is now dead. let's hope. It illustrates the point -- from long ago in late 1998, I first came across the following on a RH 5.1 system: ps - is now deprecated, use ps from now on I about launched a brick at my monitor. Who were these red hat bozos and what were they lecturing me about using ps? especially since AFAIK, neither Sys V or BSD has this issue. It seemed (and seems) entirely thought up by concerns other than those that use tools for functional reasons. It seems like someone wanted to make the manual easier to write. Second, the way rm was changed, including on my current Mandrake 7.1, to default to essentially requiring rm -rf to do the work of what rm does on sparc and bsd and used to do on linux til the redhat horde arrived. Kids, how many times have you typed rm -rf and blown away a directory tree when you only intended to remove a file or files. The point of the rf flag to rm was it was supposed to be rarely invoked. By making rm nag, you cause rm -rf to be the norm. It's far more catastrophic if mistakes happen than rm. Fix it til it's broke, then look up in amazement. Finally.. this whole conf.modules / modules.conf thing. Kudos to you for posting it. This is a linux long-standing gotcha, ever since the modules entity came out. If you are going to ''deprecate'' a file and remove it, please actually do all the work of testing every potential fail point in your install suite .. don't just hang a sign up that says 'deprecations to the rear' then go home. Because the result will be yet again something that will run right until someone reads a HOWTO from 1998, or an info that hasn't lately been maintained, or even a (deprecated) man page, and once they do, will be royally confused, possibly annoyed, and probably longing either for the days when Microsoft did everything for them, or else when slackware was the only linux distro, a handful of conf files easily tuned any linux system. The savvy will fix, the rest will do exactly what you apparently were trying to prevent -- get frustrated with their 'computing desktop experience.' And don't forget those of us that just don't have time to go to school on a wildly new set of problems every time a new release comes out. At last - a Cooker kernel patched for agpgart! For all you cookers out there with Matrox AGP cards, this is what I would do: 1. Uninstall all your cooker Mesa rpms, except the demos (the latest ones require glide, which is no use for a Matrox owner) 2. Point your browser at http://utah-glx.sourceforge.net and download glxMesa-2328-1.i586.rpm and the gart module README 3. Get kernel-source-2.2.17-0.9mdk.i586.rpm from Cooker, together with -headers, -doc and -utils 4. Use XFree86-3.3.6-16mdk.i586.rpm - 4.0 is no use 5. Install glxMesa 4. Build kernel, enabling AGP support with the appropriate chipset under "Character devices" 5. `mknod /dev/agpgart c 10 175` to make /dev/agpgart 6. Add this to /etc/rc.d/rc.local, to load agpgart at start-up: # load 3DFX module action "Loading AGPGART module" insmod agpgart 7. Add this to your XF86Config: Section "Module" # This loads the 3DFX module Load "glx.so" EndSection 8. Reboot, with fingers crossed. I did this and most of the Mesa demos work (200+ frames per second with gears) - see attached GLtest. I don't do Quake, but it's reported to work. I have read the contents of /usr/doc/menu-2.1.5, and I'm trying to live with it, but I *do* *not* like it at all. If I wanted to be dictated to about how I do my everyday work then perhaps I would have chosen a distribution like Debian. The way forward for Linux is for it to get on everybody's desktop. The KDE people know this and have been doing great work to promote an alternative desktop operating system. I moved from RedHat to Mandrake mainly because it seemed more KDE-friendly but now I'm not so sure. Hey, KDE already has a perfectly good menu editor, despite Mandrake's attempt to hide it (Configuration ¦ Other, would you believe). I like to organise my menus to reflect *my* work, for example: ¦ -- Document control -- Programming -- User guides -- Ornithology -- Finance -- Japanese porcelain -- Gardening stuff All right, some of the headings are fictitious, but I could do that before ML71, by adding the appropriate folders and .kdelnks to /usr/share/applnk. I'm still trying to do this now, by adding .kdelnks to /usr/share/applnk and adding entries in /etc/menu then calling update-menus. The new menu items live only until I install an RPM - when my `rogue' .kdelnks simply get wiped out without question -- this is pure arrogance. Out of sheer bloody-mindness, I continue, carefully backing up /usr/share/applnk so I can restore *my* links when a new RPM has zapped them. Anyone figure out how to put it all back PLEASE.HELP ME AND LET ME KNOW as root : /usr/bin/update-menus -- MandrakeSoft Inchttp://www.mandrakesoft.com San-Francisco, CA USA --Chmouel -- ------ Peter Ruskin Wrexham, UK KDE - the professionals' choice --
[Cooker] Fwd: Re: [utah-glx-users] Utah-GLX Patch for 2.2.15
-- Forwarded Message -- Subject: Re: [utah-glx-users] Utah-GLX Patch for 2.2.15 Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2000 23:29:59 +0100 From: Peter Ruskin I finally got GLX working again on my Mandrake 7.0-2 - 7.1 box. I downloaded 2.2.16-1mdk kernel, did `rm -f /usr/src/linux/include/linux/agpgart.h' then sucessfully applied the Utah `/usr/local/glx/newagp/agpgart-2.2.13.patch' patch. Here are the results for my PentiumIIMMX-400 box with 380MB RAM and Matrox G400-32MB card. I'm quite impressed! #* [/usr/local/glx/mesa/demos]# ./bounce # works fine sending isdirect request isdirect succeeded going direct got reply mgaGLXClientInit try to open /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/glx.so: opened /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/glx.so found init func got api pointers got dispatch table calling init func: Sucessfully loaded X11 client symbols nvisual=32 (0+32) glx extension init: Initializing logs [mga] mgaInitGLX completed adding direct client: Creating new client: 1!
