Re: [slim] Annouce: New Squeezeslave 0.8 release availabe on sourceforge

2008-10-29 Thread erland

Does the -r or --retry parameters work on the Linux version ?

I can run them with any time but it never succeeds to re-connect to
SqueezeCenter after a SqueezeCenter restart.

If I run them with a retry seconds parameter it just says:

Code:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/opt/squeezeslave08$ ./squeezeslave -r 2
  Output devices:
  0: /dev/dsp
  Error connecting to 0.0.0.2:3483
  Sleeping for 5 s.

I'm using the squeezeslave-0.8-12-lnx26-intel.tar.gz version on Ubuntu
8.04
I've also tried squeezeslave 0.7.5.1 with the same behaviour.
I've also tried compiling the 0.8-12 version myself with the same
behaviour.

Is this supposed to work or am I doing something wrong ?

So it seems both Linn and Slimdevices are in need of an open-source

Re: [slim] Annouce: New Squeezeslave 0.8 release availabe on sourceforge

Yes, it's been that way since the option was added depending on your
getopt library.

SS thinks the 2 is the IP address and it's retrying using the default
of 5

Error connecting to 0.0.0.2:3483
Sleeping for 5 s. ^
|

It's related to the problem I've run into using optional arguments with
getopt. I've changed this in my source tree to required, so in the next
release -r without an argument aborts with an error.

As a work around replace '-r 2' with --retry without any value for now
or undefine GETOPT_SUPPORTS_OPTIONAL in the makefile.

I have an alsa version for linux partially working, plays mp3 streams
fine but nothing else. I think it's related to buffering, but haven't
nailed it down yet.

This argument is simply ridiculous. I carry my iPhone in my pocket
with me at all times. To be able to take it out at any time anywhere
in the house and access SqueezeCenter and all of my Squeezeboxes would
be far from cute. It would be freak'n kick arse.

Battery life and the WiFi chip used in the iPhone has never been a
problem for my use on my home network. I come home, it hops on the
network when I wake it up from standby - ironically alot *FASTER* than
my Duet's Controller if it's sitting in sleep mode off of the charger.
 It lasts throughout the day/night.

Do you even own an iPhone/iPod Touch?

At any rate, the person that this setup would appeal to would find it
incredibly useful and an excellent complement to the Controller. 99%
of the people out there don't walk around with a Controller in their
pocket. An iPhone on the other hand There have been a hundred
times when I left my SB playing in the livingroom and decided that I
wanted to turn it off or adjust the volume/track while in the basement.
Having left the Controller in the livingroom on the charger, I would
love to be able to launch an app on my iPhone (that resides in my
 pocket) and go to town.

And as far as incoming calls - no worries - that's the beauty about
having a device that not only serves as cell phone but a gazillion
other things as well. Answer the call, finish the conversation, and
then resume jamming to your tunes. What's the big deal?

I can think of no reason why this isn't a good idea, aside from
Slim/Logitech worrying that it will take away from Controller sales -
in which case that's too bad...

 ...but Sonos did it... ;^p

To begin, as a courtesy, I never call anyone else's argument
ridiculous. I respect everyone's opinions. I state my case on my post
or reply and let the readers draw their own conclusion. I guess you did
not read my full argument. I said that the iPhone with iPeng or a
SqueezePlay derivative solution is fine as personal remote not as
home remote that everyone and their family and friends can use. I
don't know about you, but my Smartphone is too personal and not for
anyone else to use. Yes, the Sonos solution is a cute solution for
one user not practical for home use. If someone else in your
household is using your iPhone to create Playlist and you receive a
call from work that's going to keep you on the iPhone for an hour...
what's the person that was creating the playlist supposed to do in the
meantime?... I know... they should get their own iPhone. My nephew has
an iPhone on which we installed iPeng. We tested we liked, but he took
his iPhone with him. Btw, no one walks around with a remote' in their
pocket because is not a multipurpose device it's always at home in the
vicinity of the AV system where anyone can use it. I have to assume
that your iPhone has either infinite battery life or you do not use it
for long calls, you do not receive many calls and you do not fully take
advantage of all its other multimedia capabilities on an ongoing basis.
I just got an Samsung Epix for work and personal use because it comes
with 18000 mAh battery. I'm giving up a couple bells and whistles, but
since I use my Smartphone to make a lot of business calls and send a
lot MMS messages with pictures it was the most sensible way for me to
go. Battery life is the Achilles heel of all these mobile devices if
you use them for prolonged periods of time... No one can argue that.
The iPhone 3G comes with just a 1200 mAh battery... with the way I use
my Smartphone that battery would barely last me a day. I know I can get
a Mobile Power Pack... but who wants to carry that. At the end of the
day I'd have to recharge it and would not be able to have it in my
pocket while I walk around my house to use it as a remote. I guess the
folks that see the Sonos and iPeng solutions as very practical do not
use the other features of their iPhone on a extensive regular basis
and use their iPhone as a personal remote. When a Squeezeplay
derivative for Smartphones comes out, I'll use it, but as personal
player, remote and on a limited basis.

Re: [slim] SB Duet connected with external DAC

2008-10-29 Thread The Moog

I think that this is a bug.

I have the same problem with my external DAC, and with the previous
version of SqueezeCenter (7.1) you could turn off the outputs when the
SB was turned off. From 7.2 onwards, this does not seem to work (even
though there is an option for it in the software).

It is not such a problem for me as I can manually switch my DAC's
inputs, but it would be nice to see it fixed. File a bug report and
hopefully it will get looked at.

Re: [slim] SB Duet connected with external DAC

2008-10-29 Thread Merlinwerks

I believe the outputs on the receiver are always on by default, even
when the SBR is powered off. This is to prevent popping through some
audio systems when turning the SBR on/off. However, this can be changed
in Squeeze Center. I'm not at my system right now, but I believe you can
find the setting in SC from the Settings page: Player Tab select
Audio from the right hand drop-down list and somewhere in that
list should be an option to turn off the audio outputs when the SBR is
powered off.

This should solve your problem, but also means you will need to pwr off
the SBR when you want to use your other transport.

I guess I took too long too post. I didn't realize that option was not

Re: [slim] How to force Duet to use ethernet not wireless?

2008-10-29 Thread davidmac27

Thanks Cliveb. Oh yes, I am very familiar with the slow blinking red
reset versus the fast blinking red reset. Every month or so, I will go
to use my Duet and the remote can't find the receiver (usually because
my music server PC is selected as the music source but it is now in
standby mode). So it confuses the Duet remote. So I have to do a hard
reset on the receiver and a factory reset on the remote. The
frustrating thing is that I get inconsistent results when I do hard
resets and factory resets. As I mentioned above, I always choose the
ethernet option during setup but then it seems that I have to do this
reset up to a dozen times before it sticks. Not always but sometimes
it can be a bear!!!

From the feedback I get on iPeng I believe there are more people using

And it can still play music, and let's you browse the internet in

My argument was mostly related to the iPhone/Smartphone. I know that
the iPod Touch has WiFi which narrows its use to home WiFi networks and
to WiFi hotspots. iPhones and Smartphones with 3G widens the area of
coverage where one can use them as streamed media players... not
necessarely as remotes. Using 3G somewhat reduces battery drain as I
compare it to the current generation of WiFi chipsets in our phones.

Re: [slim] Game On: Sonos has an iPhone app

2008-10-29 Thread jaffacake

I think you guys could argue this point forever, you're all right and
all wrong at the same time...because there are 2 completely different
markets for this kind of product and you're arguing from both camps.

The first market are those who already own an iPhone or iPod touch.
They carry it all the time, especially in the case of the phone, and
it's a convenience to them if they can also control their music system
from this device. An official or unofficial solution is suited to this
market as they didn't buy the device for this purpose and any solution
(even if it wasn't fully functioned or didn't work particularly well)
is a bonus. Battery life, sharing the device etc. isn't a concern as
only they will use it and then only from time to time.

The second market comes from people who want a nice modern touchscreen
controller. As well as being cool the touch interface also adds
benefits in the form of an on-screen keyboard - ideal for artist/track
searches which aren't so easy on a scroll wheel. For these people, this
cool controller starts at $220 for a basic iPod Touch...it's a great
price. Not only that, it can also be used as a portable media player
with local music/video playback and it's a great little web browser.

Sonos CR100 controller? $399 - Squeezebox Controller $292.12
(amazon.com) - iPod Touch 8GB $219.94 (amazon.com)

It's obvious to see the attraction here, the iPod option is not only
touch screen, but it can save $$ over the price of the proprietary
controller option. People WILL buy them as dedicated controllers.
People WILL pass them around at parties and people WILL treat them like
any other controller.

You run the Sonos controller on an iPod touch and it works like the
CR100 controller only with a better screen and a touchscreen UI. You
put it on the coffee table, it goes to sleep. You pick it up, the Sonos
controller is still there when it wakes. No need to switch tasks, no
complications, no extra effort. You run that Sonos controller software
and keep it running and that's all it will ever be...the fact that it
has an Apple badge on the backside makes no difference to the end user.
You just use it, and charge it, like any other controller.

While you can add radio stations to Favorites, I think there should be

This really irritates me. I finally looked into building an OPML

to set up hierarchies. I spent quite a bit of time setting it all up,
but apparently that time was wasted.

Tried this morning to manually import myradio.opml, but it doesn't
stick. Renaming the file to something else and importing it is also
not permanent. For that matter, having been in a hurry at the time,
I'm not sure that even the impermanent file can be used to actually
bring up a station.

This in turn makes me wonder what the point is of the OPML browser.

Clarifying my points:

1. - Controller makes a better home remote for communal use. So does
the iPod Touch or any dedicated media player with a decent interface
and wifi.

2. - An iPhone Smartphone is a bit of overkill as a home remote if
you use its other functions on an ongoing basis for prolonged periods
of time. Battery life is more on an issue for mobile multi-use battery
powered devices that it is for single-use battery powered devices. It
might make a good personal remote, but not a good home remote.

3. - What I'm looking for is a good SSH client for my Smartphone or a
derivative of SqueezePlay with SHH for this platform so that I can
expand/widen its use as a stream media player to include my SC server
which at the same time would give me personal remote capabilities as
sync it with a hardware player at home

Re: [slim] Duet Controller Failure

2008-10-29 Thread allendk123

I finally got a response to my question logged with the SlimDevices
support desk after two further prompts from me to say that it was being
escalated to the second tier support team and someone should contact me
in the nest day. I did not want to wait any more and managed to find a
phone number for Logitech European Support.

I called the European support number and was very impressed with the
response. Simon spent 25 minutes with me trying to resolve the problem
before coming to the conclusion that it was a hardware failure and that
I would be shipped a replacement, free of charge.

I was not impressed that my controller failed after three months of use
and the lack of response from the SlimDevices support desk. Particularly
because I had recommended Squeezeboxes and Duets to my friends on the
basis of the product support available. However, Logitech European
Support have restored my confidence.

Is this difference in support response because of my UK location? Would
it have been different if I was based in the USA?

SB3 does NOT respond to pings.

Push and hold power till reboot and it reconnect on its own. There is
a DHCP exchange, for what its worth.

I'm running with DHCP reservation, so it always gets the same IP.

It seems as if its not really on the network but doesn't know its not.
Or alternately, the WRT110 is ignoring it.

Nothing in the logs. No recent DHCP, in particular.

[slim] Artwork from iTunes -- Why So Hard??

2008-10-29 Thread rtranquilla

HI, new forum member here.

I've had the Squeezebox Duet for only a few weeks, and have everything
working fine except for the album artwork. I've searched through these
forums and trolled Google multiple times, but without success.

I use iTunes to rip discs in Apple Lossless. iTunes is set up so that
the Library.xml file, the Album Artwork folder, and all of the music
folders are in the same folder on an external hard drive. Most of the
discs have associated album art.

SqueezeCenter is set to look in this directory, and for playing music
there's no problem; artwork simply doesn't show up. A few tweaks have
me to the point where scanning the music library +does+ include an
Artwork Scan, which seems to have all 284 out of 284 that it should.
Why don't they show up?

From what I've read, there's seems to be a conflict b/w the way iTunes
stores things and the way SC wants them. (Given how many people use
iTunes, couldn't Slim Devices integrate better...?) It seems like
there's no easy fix, and I will have to do things manually. That's fine
if that what it takes, but I can't even find a clear description of a
manual method. (I'm running Windows XP, btw.)

Can someone either point me in the right direction, or give me a
plain-English (Step 1, Step 2, etc...) tutorial in getting SC to
retrieve album art?

Thanks much,
Ryan Tranquilla

Re: [slim] Artwork from iTunes -- Why So Hard??

I realize that 7.3 is still in beta, but I'm about to give up

A rescan included successful imports of Artwork, iTunes Downloaded
Artwork, and iTunes User-Added Artwork.

None of which actually shows up in SC.

Seeing things show up in the scan makes me think I'm just missing one
little piece, but maybe it's more complicated than that. Should I just
wait until the official release of 7.3? I've already spent too long
this morning trying to figure this out; it's the completed iTunes
Downloaded Artwork that frustrates me...I feel so close.

Thanks,
Ryan

I agree entirely. The SBC is interesting but does not yet perform as a
system remote. For that I utilise a Logitech Harmony One. I need it to
allow my family to control the whole TV / Sound System with ease. It
works on a state basis and is used to select from a range of simple
options (Listen to Music, Watch Film, Watch TV, etc) Its a pity it
does not have WiFi to fully integrate the Squeezbox experience - and its
a relatively cheap touch screen + button device.

I think this would be a better prospect for Logitech / Slim long term.
The SBC is just too dedicated for it's price level.

The use of an iPod Touch as an additional controller is simple
(although until we have a fully localised application there are some
performance frustration issues). The price / performance ration is
likely to remain unbeatable.

I realise the views expressed are personal, there is no perfect
solution, bt the SBC role seems a little limited.

Just leaves one question Pippin - when's the native application
finished?

Regards

David

Just so I'm clear on this - do you mean play the stations through the

Make sure the players are connected to your local SqueezeCenter server,

Logitech sells hardware, and so will focus development on things to
enhance market acceptance, improve the user experience and eliminate
problems. The biggest bang for the buck is realized from enhancements
and changes that affect the greatest number of people.

The iphone/touch platform is only one group of dozens of devices that
can be used over wifi to control SB music. Having a native application
is likely of interest to only a small percentage of its owners since
browser access is always available.

Logitech will act rationally as a business, which means that it would
pursue any reason business opportunity. My bet is that developing a
native app for i-devices is unlikely to be a significant opportunity.
And, having one is unlikely to sell a significant number of additional
boxes.

Re: [slim] Very frustrating

2008-10-29 Thread tyeguy

One of the reasons I purchased this system was the fact that it was my
understanding (web site, user manual, etc), that a computer isn't
needed. Having to connect to the SqueezeCenter means I have to leave
the computer on does it not?

To be honest, syncing at the moment is a pipe dream - I would like to
just get one of the damn receivers to play continuous music. I'm lucky
to get 2-3 hours at one point before it stops on me.

I use to own a Roku - and after several years of service, it died on
me. I had the opportunity to purchase a replacement at a good price,
but I liked all the promises that the Squeezebox Duet offered. I wish
I had my Roku back - it was reliable when it came to playing days upon
days of music without stopping.

Like I've said, I'm frustrated and disappointed in this system.

Harmony/SBC combo would really have to make me think hard about my next
 remote purchase.

I subscribed to the Harmony Universal/Controller believers' club before
the Controller existed and Logitech came into the picture. Later, I even
remember asking if the Logitech Harmony developers could share some of
the available code (device specific IR codes) with the Logitech/SD
developers to use with the Controller but was told that this was not
possible. I forgot the exact reason given, but I think it had to do
with these codes not being in the public domain. Given that the
Controller has an IR port that has yet to be exploited it seemed like a
natural next step. The lack of a keypad in the controller limits this
evolution... ergonomically at least.

[slim] SqueezeCenter 7.2.1 - Stops Playing Stream After X Minutes

2008-10-29 Thread MitchellHa

Hello,

I have been a long time SqueezeCenter (SlimServer) user and just
installed the latest 7.2.1 upgrade on a Windows machine. But, I now
have a baffling behavior I haven't seen before. When I use a media
player (like VLC) to listen to the stream (using the .../stream.mp3
URL), it will play fine for a minute or two and then just quit. The
strangest thing is that I've tried again and again and most times it
quits playing at 1 min 16 secs into the stream. Same time almost
everytime. What's even weirder is that a few times it will play longer
and quit at 2 mins 32 secs. Of course, I noticed this was exactly twice
the length of time of most of my tries. I've never had this issue and
have gone through many upgrades before. I am completely stumped on
what this could be and how to fix it. Any ideas?

Thanks.

There was a period of time last night where a server issue caused a

Everything should be functioning normally now. If you are still having
problems accessing your locker through a device, send me a PM with your

[slim] Which Remote Control to buy?

2008-10-29 Thread MrGadget

Hi guys, I am really enjoying my SqueezeBox Classic but would like to
take it to the next level for conveniance and 'cool factor'.

I know lots of people are using an ipod Touch to control the system via
the web page and it seems that most people are very happy with it. Do
you have to use iPeng for this to work or does ipeng make the GUI
easier to navigate compared to the normal Squeeze Centre web page? To
install iPeng do you have to do anything to the ipod Touch that will
void the warranty?

Also what about using something other than Apples products to control
SqeezeCentre? Two other devices I have seem on the net are the Archos
5,7 and the Cowon Q5W. I know these are more expensive but they have a
bigger screen and perhaps are less limited in supported formats. What
do you guys think about these?

Thanks.

Re: [slim] Game On: Sonos has an iPhone app

2008-10-29 Thread lanierb

One reason they don't do it might be that it could undercut controller
sales. Not sure if that's it, but it's one reason for Logitech not to
do it.

Somehow the market has to sort all this out. It seems like what we
really need is an iPhone that has universal remote capability
(preferably via wifi not IR) including a native SB controller app, and
can stream Rhapsody locally, as well as many other things. The funny
thing is that this is all technologically easy but is currently blocked
either by old technologies (most media components still only accept IR
commands) or IP problems (Apple won't let anyone stream music to an
iPhone but them).

Oh, I get it. So basically you install the plugin on a typical
SqueezeCentre install on a PC/Laptop and use it instead of the default
skin. So when you log in with a wifi device, it just acts as a dumb
display as shows the same thing as what the PC displays. i thought it
was an application that needs to be installed on the wifi device itself
(I guess this is what the native app will be).

Re: [slim] Game On: Sonos has an iPhone app

2008-10-29 Thread peterw

From a business standpoint, this looks like a smart move for exactly one
reason: offloading costs risks to Apple. The Sonos controller is
dated, big, clunky, and inferior to the Squeezebox Controller in pretty
much every respect. Rather than do the hard work of making better
hardware, they're leveraging Apple's design, manufacturing,
distribution, marketing, etc. Smart, though it makes me wonder if Sonos
is running out of ideas.

From a UI standpoint, who cares? There was only one part of the demo
video that looked interesting, the concept of proportionately related
volume control for a group of synchronized players. Beyond that, I saw
nothing significant that isn't already in SqueezeCenter+SqueezePlay
7.2. It looks like early Controller firmware -- text-heavy, lots of
missed opportunities. And it's an English-only app right now -- they
didn't even localize it? Is this just a market test, to see if they can
bail on making Rev 2 hardware and just use iPod Touch devices? If it
goes well, they'll start to flesh out the UI on this app?

Oh, and as cool as the iPod Touch/iPhone interface is (and I mean
Apple's basic UI, not the new Sonos app), it looks like a two-handed
UI. Probably better than the clunky old Sonos controller, but, unlike
the Squeezebox Controller, not usable with one hand. I'd definitely
install the Sonos app if I had an iPod Touch and Sonos gear (just as
I'd try iPeng), but even with this new software, Sonos doesn't have a
controller option that really competes with the Squeezebox Controller.

Thanks for the tip guys.

I find it wierd that SqueezeCenter must put single tracks in an album
when they don't belong to one. If I'm looking in 'Albums', I'm looking
for just that...full albums. I can look under 'Artists' if I wanted to
look for everything by an artist. I'm guessing it's that way because
SC is making all tracks available regardless of the category you're

developers that are unhappy with the approval process with legitimate
reasons are a small minority. also i believe apple is loosening the
ultra-restrictive terms ( see the removal of the NDA) as the process
 and app store mature.

sorry if i sound like apple apologist but i think people should
recognize that apple is working with a entirely new model of software
distribution on a totally new platform. have they made mistakes? yes.
have they made changes for the better? yes. is the app store as it
stands one of the best distribution platforms out there? yes and
 probably by a fair margin.

bottom line - jailbreaking is fine but for the author it means 1)a
fraction if any compensation for their efforts 2)a much smaller
 audience for their software.

I agree with you. As I stated, the AppStore is, without a doubt, the
best distribution channel for profitting from iPhone development. I
was simply commenting that iPhone developers don't HAVE TO go through
the AppStore.

Apple does seem to be loosening their iron fisted grip, a little. But
they still have the most restrictive SDK and NDA rules ever seen for a
mainstream computing platform. They also take an inordinate amount of
time to approve apps for the AppStore, and have seemingly arbitrarily
rejected some legitimately fine apps.

It makes one wonder if this is the same Apple that released that famous
1984 ad. If you don't remember it, you can check it out here:

Re: [slim] Get rid of the 'No Album' album?

2008-10-29 Thread radish

It's just a side effect of the simplistic pop/rock oriented data model
inherited from most similar apps - an artist has albums which in turn
have tracks - end of story. There is work coming up to try and make the
model more flexible, so keep an eye out and speak up if you have ideas
:)

Re: [slim] Artwork Display

Here it is folks! The working model. Just need to clean up the cables
and mount the PC but I wanted to share this with the community. Now
people at parties will be able to see what song is playing easily. I
used a spare 17inch LCD monitor connected to a fit-PC SLIM, no
relation to SlimDevices, running Windows XP Home.
http://www.fit-pc.com/new/ has the specs.

Again, my thanks to Michael Herger and many others on this forum.

Here are some pics. This was a fun project!

I think you have the relationship backward, this did not arise from
apps. Long before there was any such thing as an app, and ever since
for that matter, most music was released by artists in the form of
albums, with tracks. Such an approach still logically organizes and
describes the vast, vast majority of most people's music collections.

As far as the desired behavior, of course a default hierarchy and
database organization can be or not be whatever is chosen. Personally,
I have no problem with a plug in cases where an essential field is
otherwise blank or not meaningful.

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter 7.2.1 - Stops Playing Stream After X Minutes

2008-10-29 Thread MitchellHa

Thanks for the reply! I downloaded the latest 7.2.x nightly build and
that took care of it! Those darn bugs :)

Anyway, I'm so happy it's working again. It really is a great piece of
software.

Re: [slim] Which Remote Control to buy?

2008-10-29 Thread davep

MrGadget;354790 Wrote:
Oh, I get it. So basically you install the plugin on a typical
SqueezeCentre install on a PC/Laptop and use it instead of the default
skin. So when you log in with a wifi device, it just acts as a dumb
display as shows the same thing as what the PC displays. i thought it
was an application that needs to be installed on the wifi device itself
(I guess this is what the native app will be).

Not quite accurate - the skins can allow full control of the server and
the squeezeboxes on your network just as if you were using the web
interface at your PC. Different skins may have more or less controls
on screen, or buried in menus, as part of their design choices but they
are much more than simple dumb displays. The iPeng skin gives you lots
of control of players and playlists, as well as displayng album art
etc, all in a fairly iPod sort of interface.
