If its any help I ordered a Vonets VAR11N-300 set this up in bridge

Then plugged it into the Touch pressed back and then selected Ethernet

So far working great powered from the Touch USB socket on the back

Correct yes, music is on a powerful NAS box, my setup has always been
like this, so I think its due to the laptop now running from USB2 ouch!

hi Michael

That would be great if you could supply me the source.

My library is 30k tracks (on a NAS) and the bottleneck is I/O for sure,
the SATA died and wiped out the disks, so I rebuilt it with Win7 booting
from a USB drive. It has 8x (i7) CPU cores and 16Gb RAM so is strong
enough. I can't change the OS due to other software, it works fine day
to day but definitely chewing on the db rebuild when Trackstat does a
massive update query after a full rescan. So I would like to see if I
can play around with the database side of things and happy to share
anything useful I find.

Thanks in advance

[slim] Why is LMS using such an old SQLite version?

2018-08-09 Thread cparker

Hi

Is there any reason why LMS is using such an old SQLite version, 3.7.7.1
which dates back to 2011.

Looking through the SQLite release log there seem to be pretty
impressive performance gains made over the years so just wondering why
this hasn't been rolled into LMS. (DBD-SQLite-1.58 released March
2018)

Cheers

PS Can we have the old forum software back.. thanks :p

Thanks I had managed hovering and had the settings set, but they didn't
work as expected. I did some further testing, from what I can tell the
logic is a bit strange. For example if you are playing a playlist of 3x
tracks. Track 1 will fade into Track 2, however if you are playing
Track 3 and then add a Track 4, it doesn't then fade into Track 4.

So I'm guessing the logic builds a track fade "map" when a track is
started. It doesn't just look at the playlist towards the end of the
playing track to see whether it should fade into the next track. I
guess there is some reason for that behaviour but hence the confusion.

Thanks for your help

Not being flippant but they are called plugins :) so none are essential
for core functionality, you can disable all of them.

Sync issues are nearly always poor wifi related. Any sync'ed player
with a Wireless Signal Strength under 50% will likely start to cause an
issue, check the information page on LMS and try to get them into the
70% as a minimum.

[slim] WiFi on the Radio Touch and probably the whole range

2014-06-14 Thread cparker

Hi guys

I recently purchased a Netgear EX6100 AC750 Wi-Fi Range Extender to
boost my WiFi to the end of the garden. Previously I had an Edimax
(2.4GHz) but wanted to replace it with the Netgear to push up to AC
speeds while keeping my legacy network devices connected.

Laptop and tablet connected fine @ 2.4GHz 5GHz.

However I couldnt get any of the players to connect to anything, this is
despite the Netgear extending both 2.4 5GHz WiFi so I thought it would
cover all bases! I played around with as many settings as I could find
but nothing made any difference, they saw the network (from what I can
tell just 2.4GHz) but the Radio, Touch and Duet/Receiver just would not
connect. MAC address was added to allow access.

Does anybody else have any players connected to a Netgear EX6100 AC750?

Cheers

Look for a 3-2-1 approach, ie. 3 forms of backup, 2 backups onsite and 1

track and just push the changes from source to destination and you can
set this up to run daily/mthly or whatever schedule you want. I have
this setup to run in idle time, so when various family laptops are left
on, the changes are pushed out to them from the main system plus I also
have a backup on a hard disk that lives in the car's entertainment

and converting it to WAV format to do its analysis, so check for the
ability to write to temporary files, lack of disk space or could be the
tracks may be short ie. 10 seconds.

Alternatively it could be corruption of the cache lib file, so delete or
rename it and start MIP again which will make it start from scratch. If
you archived the analysis into the files it will rebuild the database
pretty quickly. (If you havent used archived analysis, then right click
on your music files and select it before touching the cache file, unless
you like a long wait :) )

Offline mode still works ok with the GUI; I added 4x albums this

were starting from scratch on a large library then it would suck but I
guess it depends if you have a system on 24/7 anyway you could just
leave a couple of your CPU cores dedicated to it and let it roll in the

Something to note on Windows if you are using Microsoft Security
Essentials (MSE). With the recent downtime, MIP was manually
fingerprinting an album of 12 tracks, but not making any headway for
30mins or so. I then stopped MIP and added the mipcore.exe as an
excluded process in MSE, mipcore file is found under; C:\Program Files
(x86)\MusicIP\MusicIP Mixer

Then restarted MIP and it shot through the files and analysed a track
every 30secs, cant guarantee it will make any difference but something
to try if you are stuck.

Re: [slim] Replacement for MusicIP - Chromaprint / Picard? Compatible with SpiceFly?

2013-11-25 Thread cparker

Hi

Its always the track selection piece that is missing, there are many
track matching products (mainly aimed at tracking and charging) and some
cloud solutions but none have the acoustic track matching technology
working from your own local music. I have tried many times over the
years to contact MusicIP asking about licensing their IP but they've
never responded.

My maths isn't strong enough to write my own analysis piece and I only
got so far with reverse engineering the m3lib data file (parts of which
seem to be encrypted?) and wasn't sure if it was legitimately covered
under UK's Copyright, Design and Patents Act 1998 or not.

If you ever find anything drop me a line :)

Re: [slim] NEW Netgear ReadyNAS and Squeezebox

2013-03-28 Thread cparker

Unless you particularly want a ReadyNAS I would recommend looking at the
Synology instead. I've used both and the ReadyNAS (NV+) was unreliable,
its supposed to be resilient but if there was a network blip it would
disappear off the network, you had to restart it, to awaken the
network port again. If there was a disk problem such as a partially
failing disk instead of just dropping the disk, it would fail to boot up
with no error messages until you manually pulled one disk out at a time
and found the one that was broken. Software updates were non-existent.

The Synology has a far better graphical GUI, has very regular software
updates and also runs LMS. I wouldnt buy a ReadyNAS again.

Its not completely clear how the DLNA works on the Extender, but have

In part, it would be great for TrackStat to be per player specific, even

jump tracks a lot, so its obviously changing the stats for tracks even

Similar question, Whats the business case for moving away from
Squeezeplay?

In the short term 1yr it does the job and you would only need to plug
gaps that are proprietary code. Longer term if there is enough interest
its worth moving to something completely shiny. There is so much code
in LMS it cant all be bad :) apart from the web interface stuck in the
1990s

Bluetooth connectivity would be nicer than Infrared, devices could then
be out of sight.

Yep the whole install/remove extras sucks and needs to be reworked,
Logitech should have developed a store front framework

[slim] Static Burst - Radio and Duet

2013-02-23 Thread cparker

Hi guys

Has anybody else experienced a static burst at the end of a
track/transition into a new track. I've noticed this on the Radio and
also the Duet, its really scary if you are listening to some nice
chilled music and suddenly for the last few seconds of the track it will
go full volume and blast out static. I thought it was a corrupted mp3
track to start with but it will do it again on the next track
transition. I tried rebooting the Radio and played the track again,
same problem. Rebooted the LMS server and same problem. Only way to
fix it, is to manually select a new track to play and then it seems
ok, the original track will then also play ok again.

Really strange, this is local and wifi connected devices (n class), they
are not in a sync group. Smart Crossfade enabled, fade in /out over 10
secs. 100% volume lock on the Duet (not on the Radio)
Will normally play on and off for weeks without issue. Its like there
is a buffer fault in the code somewhere that only shows after a lot of
play time.

Any thoughts, sure its not doing the speakers any good at all, or my
nerves! :)

Cheers

To be fair, its not quite the same thing to hold a massive text list

a few thousand album art pics will swallow the memory.

A few years back there were dozens of developers and now you can count

they have 1+ votes, so hence the few dev votes will never get

Goodsync its not free but not expensive and is absolutely rock solid.
You can set it up to run in idle time in the background when you arent

will send you an email status report after each sync. Their beta v9
looks really interesting as well with delta p2p copying but I've only

Hi, As you are running Wintel, just install Spyglass from my website
and it will setup Headless for you. Ensure you have installed the
client .net framework 4 client profile, then just run Spyglass and
select the install headless option in the menus. It will then do all
the steps and will also test MIP is working correctly.

I'm assuming that you added your music into MIP and did a scan to
fingerprint your music first? You must do this first before playing
around with SBS or headless.

If you have uninstalled MIP then it wont work so well ;) When you

2011-07-29 Thread cparker

Why is it that SBS doesnt install with all the plugins disabled? Its
really frustrating to have to abort the scanning process to remove

Wouldnt it be better to have a simple initial installation and give it
a clear run of a full scan with just the data you want in the database.
Then when users are more confident with the product they have the
choice to add plugins and bloat out the database ;)

Sorry for the moan :) So far 7.6 seems ok, nice job!

Re: [slim] MusicIp/SugarCube settings

2010-08-19 Thread cparker

Hi Brad,

Few points in no particular order;

1) Style 114, Variety 3
Is what I use with a library of 12k but there is no right or wrong
answer as it will vary to taste, what tracks you have etc

2) Install Trackstat and then use the Trackstat Integration settings on
the SugarCube page, eg. Block Track Playcounts Greater Than X, Block
Track if Played Recently.

3) SugarCube settings are discrete, so whatever changes you make
anywhere else in MusicIP (including the offical MusicIP plugin) will
have no impact. When you change the SugarCube settings they are
dynamic and will be active from the next track change.

4) Use SugarCube directly (not via DynamicPlaylist) it will use a
fuller compliment of algorithms.

This will hopefully improve things for you. Technically if you want a
random mix you should use the random mix plugin the idea with MusicIP
is that its not random ;)

Regards

Re: [slim] Trouble with MusicIP Headless, SC7.3, and Sugarcube

2008-11-12 Thread cparker

ob_kook;359061 Wrote:
This is not a re-post of my other thread, but rather a continuation. I
had done enough changes to my system that it just seemed to be more
confusing to stay on that same thread. (Thanks Raven22 for your
 assistance on that thread)

Problem - cannot get MIP Headless integrated correctly with SC, and as
a result, cannot get Sugarcube working either.

 Description -
 System:
 * Intel dualCore box (home built) with Vista Ultimate.
 * RAID 5 comprised of 4x600GB SATA drives direct attached to the mobo
 * SC is running on a virtual machine hosted by the Vista O/S on WinXP
 * (For all intents and purposes, consider I am working with XP Pro SP2
as a VM is exactly like a physical machine)
 * (Since the RAID5 is one the Vista O/S, it acts as a network share
 volume)
 * SC - Version: 7.3 - 23837 @ Fri Nov 7 03:08:40 PST 2008
 * MIP - v.1.8.1b, installed, analyzed, and working properly (can send
 mixes)
 * - Port is set to 10003, and API services disabled
 * MIP Headless - installed, set up according to Spicefly's guide,
Spicefly's skin, and can create a test mix.
 * - MMM.ini file is configured with the proper libary path, and
 port is set to 10002.
 * Sugarcube - v1.7.1 configured according to Spicefly's guide

OK, before this, I was on 7.2, and due to the incredibly long MIP
import times, I decided to switch to 7.3 since the patch was integrated
 in that version.

Before that time, I *did* get both MIP and Sugarcube working, but I had
double entries in my library. After configuring all of the above,
refreshing the MIP headless cache, and rescanning SC, I no longer have
M in my library entries, and SugarCube simply stops or repeats a
single song depending on what repeat setting I choose.

I've gone through the threads by Model Citizen, SlimChance, OhPinchy
and others, meticulously followed the SD Wiki, Spicefly's guide, and
the MIP forums, but I am just plain stuck.

I'm sure it is something I've overlooked or done incorrectly, because
everything obviously works, but like proofreading your own writing, I
 can't spot the glaring mistake.

Thanks in advance for your help!

 Kook

Must likely is the Port number setting. ie. you have SC set to talk via
10003 but the MIP headless is active on port 10002. (or vice versa)

When you press the create text mix button in the MIP headless, look at
the Port number in the URL string ie. http://localhost:1000x ???
Then make sure to use the 1000x everywhere in SC/Sugarcube etc.

If its not that, then it is likely firewall settings or AV blocking the
1000x port.

Additional tests you can do, is start the API in the MIP GUI settings
and see if SugarCube starts working. Which would indicate whether that
Port is blocked by something.

I rolled back from 7.3 as I found it unstable and the new MIP patch
just chewed my library up, you might want to drop back to 7.2.1 and
just bite the bullet on long import times.

Good Luck

Re: [slim] suggestion for new forum facility

2008-10-17 Thread cparker

I guess you are meaning if a dev post changes only at the end, which
after a few more posts becomes lost within the thread so you cant find
the latest version of the plugin??

When I update a plugin, I edit/amend the first post to include the
changes and then paste the changes as the last thread of the post.

Seems to work ok, covers new viewers that start at the first post and
people who just dive straight to the end.

I guess having an obvious place to stash the attachment of your latest
plugin would help. Most annoying thing I find, is that you cant send
private msgs with attachments, which makes collaborative working more
challenging!

...or you could install SugarCube and get around having to do all the
sync stuff! It provides MIP functionality of a different kind ;)

New version due out shortly when I got a few spare hours to finish it
=)
(If you have a stack of foreign chars in your files then it will have
issues)

In respect to a normal MIP install though as long as MIP GUI is looking
at your files at; e.g. c:\music or \\nas\music
You have the MIP headless set up correctly and each time you update the
MIP GUI you load up the MIP headless and get a reload cache button
appear (which symbolises its working ok) and press that button

(Check that SC path is same as above e.g. c:\music or \\nas\music)
Then its just a case of SC refresh, new changes or full scan should be
it!

Yeah I must get around to updating Spicefly Syncer to SCv7 :s

The issue boils down to the play this file command to SC which goes ok..
and then doesnt stack it. The MIP request works fine.

I already use a lot of CLI commands just a shame the documentation for
SC is so poor and pretty impenetrable to the novice perl gardener..
maybe one day it will have a stronger API and proper support from SC
devs for plugin devs who add bells and polish the fragile shell that is
SC.

Though I reckon by the day that comes along I will have long got bored
of it!

seen mention of the importance of timing startup of the MiP and SC

 need to be aware of?

Correct method is MIP GUI analysis, MIP Headless page - Reload Cache

Re: [slim] MusicIP, SC7.2 genre tags

2008-09-22 Thread cparker

You dont mention the filetype, but I'm guessing you are talking about
mp3 tags?

Make sure that you *only* save id3v2.3 tags, id3v1 and id3v2.4 give
really strange results, v2.4 tags seem to cause MIP not to be able to
read the tags correctly and having both id3v1 and idv2.3 together in a
mp3 file causes a heap of mess!

You dont mention whether you are using MIP headless? If you are, then
you need to reload the cache and then do a Squeezecentre full re-scan,
as sometimes the just check for new/changed wont pick up changes.

Hope this helps, there are some guides on my site which might help
you.

Cheers

I just purchased an iMac and set it up yesterday. I transferred my mp3
collection over from my PC - where I had been running MusicIP and
SqueezeCenter (successfully). I have about 13,000 songs in my library,
and I thought it would take at least a full day to have MIP scan the
entire library from scratch (as I stupidly forgot to copy over the MIP
archive from my PC). Well, lo and behold, as soon as MIP was done
importing the library, I was able to make mixes again. The whol process
only took a few minutes. How is that possible? I was sure that MIP would
have to analyze all the songs from scratch...unless, is the MIP
metadata (for lack of better word) saved in each mp3 file? I'm just
 curious.

Anyway, my migration over to the Mac was so easy. In addition to
getting MIP integrated so quickly, my Duet/Controller worked without
doing anything! Really cool. If I had known it was this problem-free, I
would have switched along time ago.

You either had the analysis archived into your files or I believe the
MIP central servers record tracks and fingerprints and if your files
match up against these fingerprints then it doesnt need to do the
analysis phase again for the file. Hence the different status of files
you see in the MIP GUI - Analysed, identified, validated, etc.,

Something like that anyway :)

then it automatically went to connect. Of course it failed. My
options on the menu were to try again or select another network.
Trying again just blindly tried again. What about entering my WPA
info?? Out of frustration, I go back a menu. THERE it has a menu for
selecting your security type. I enter the info and all is well. Why
not present that menu prior to attempting to connect? Or present it
after a connection attempt fails? Or say go back to enter info.

I had a similar problem configuring the Duet wireless on a Netgear
router DG834N, after messing about with SSID, encryption levels it came
down to the speed of the router. I had to drop it down from the Up to
270Mbps to g b. This then connected ok and I could finish the
setup.

Fortunately once it was connected I could change it back again to 270Mb
and everything still worked! :)

Re: [slim] Network Test: Wireless vs. Homeplug

2008-07-23 Thread cparker

bigfool1956;322267 Wrote:
See now here's another thing, because in the UK we use ring mains as
standard, which wikipedia implies is pretty unique. This means we
shouldn't have 'spurs', and it should actually be quite hard to find
another socket in the same room that is not on the same ring. However
DIY rewiring (maybe a previous owner) can change that situation.
Generally though using a different socket in the same room of a UK
house is identical to using the same socket.

While we are talking electrics
The latest regs for elecs in the UK are pushing towards radial rather
than ring circuits. The advantage of the ring main is that the load is
reduced on the wire (ie. the chances of it going up in flames ;) as the
power can go either way around the ring, to that meaty 5kw fan heater.

You will normally have a number of radial circuits already, one for
your hot water cyclinder, one to your cooker etc. So its not that much
different and is cheaper for house builders companies.

A spur takes its power from a ring main, so its affectively part of a
ring main, though you shouldnt spur from a spur unless you fuse it
correctly.

Note builders being builders, if you have an extension added to your
house, rather than rip up the floor to continue the ring main, they
will look in the ceiling and drop a spur from your upstairs ring main,
so one end of your room may indeed be on a different ring main.

Finally dont forget the Part P gravy train, that you need to be
registered to be messing with some of your electrics anyway.. Though
when you move house normally the most you will be asked to have done by
the mortgage company is a visual check of the consumer unit if you dont
have a certificate.

Anyway regarding wireless v homeplug.. I didnt notice any difference
myself, apart from the extra flashing from the network port keeps me
awake :)

Re: [slim] Spent 3 hours with tech support last night...

2008-06-13 Thread cparker

Like it, this thread has turned into an IP masterclass ;)

Why not just set address reservations in your DHCP setup, most new
routers support this, just add the MAC address of the network card and
each time it asks for an IP address the router will return the same IP
address linked to the MAC. Therefore you cover both static and dynamic
allocation requirements!

Also set your reservation lease times to weeks and it will pretty much
have the same affect.

On another note, a dedicated server is always the way to go, behind a
router with a hardware firewall built in, then you dont need a software
firewall or antivirus crippling the machine into the floor. Most viri
come via email or from web browsing therefore if you have a dedicated
server its highly unlikely it will ever get affected.

Cheerio

Hi rbl

How much have you tried to use your own LinkSys router? I suspect the
ISP one is only using some QoS for the on demand data. If you
configured your own router, it would just mean that your internet thru
put would be slower for everything else requiring the internet at the
time you were pulling down on demand data as it would try to use the
whole bandwidth, rather than what is given to it via QoS.

You should be able to just note the login settings down and put them
into your LinkSys box and away you go.

In the UK, BT provide their own router box but you can just use your
own router without problems. No more than setting the username/pwd to
be the same as the original router.
