Re: [Elecraft] K3 KPA500 3 days in.
I use solid-state amp with my K3. With the amp on standby in circuit, I tune, then activate the amp. The K3 and amp work just fine. Tuner memory may be an issue when doing a QSY so disabling the tuner in that circumstance would probably be of benefit. Any losses added by the tuner are insignificant at 1.5 KW amp output. I usually ragchew in the evenings and use my amp. Otherwise, the amp is off for my other bands where I operate QRP most of the time. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- You don't have a problem with your 6M setup - it's working well. When you use the 100W K3 ATU with the amp bypassed, it sees the antenna as its load and adjusts the match to let the K3 see a 1:1 SWR. When you put the amp in line, the K3 sees the amp as its load, not the antenna. The SWR seen by the K3 should be close to 1:1. The K3 tuner can and should be disabled. The amp sees the untuned antenna as its load, including any inherent mismatch. The SWR displayed by the amp won't necessarily be the same as what the K3 saw without its tuner because of SWR metering calibration differences and variations in apparent SWR along varying lengths of feedline. But the K3 tuner is irrelevant when the amp is in line. It can't change the SWR seen by the amp and the amp can't change the SWR of the antenna. If you put a high power tuner between the amp and the antenna, then it should be able to tune out the SWR seen by the amp. Elecraft has announced a future KAT-500 (1000?) that will do this or you can use a third-party product. 73, /Rick On Tue, Jun 21, 2011 at 7:39 AM, r miles greenacres...@charter.net wrote: One curious note. Re: [Elecraft] K-3 Noise Reduction
Ron, I don't have the 5k to compare, but have read and tried all the settings of the K3 for AGC and NR/NB. I have found the wide variety of settings very beneficial as I can set the K3 for the best performance in my situation. I think that a recent post had at least 4 URL's you could visit to help you understand the settings. The K3 does so much more than any radio I have owned or own. I can foul up the NR or NB along with the AGC settings just as well as any good appliance operator can, so some trial and error along with a technical read on how these functions interact will turn any appliance operator into a knowledgeable and successful user. One more aside: I can get rid of most any noise with AGC settings, but these will knock the signals down a bit. The electric fence across the street with S5 signals can be eliminated! But not without some signal loss. The underlying noise level is around s2-3 most days. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- I have a K-3, S/N 1997 and was talking to a friend who also has a K-3 on the air recently. He mentioned that he also recently purchased a Yaesu FT 5000 and noticed that the noise reduction on the FT 5000 seems to do a better job of reducing the noise while still having good copy on the signal. I told him that I don't use the NR often, and when I have tried it, I also notice that even in the 1-1 setting the signal seems to lose some of its clarity. So I'm hoping this is a cockpit issue on our end and that some of you have your NR working well. Any comments would be appreciated. Other than this, I still really love my K-3. I also am using the LP-Pan Adapter and find it really makes my single receiver K-3 almost a Flex 1000 on the receive, and I can listen to 2 signals via stereo headphones, one in each ear. 73 Ron AE6RH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

My Win7 works fine without changing those settings. I am using self-built PC with Intel Board. The PC issue could be a Bios setting. Another easier way to get to the USB settings is to click on the lower right task bar for the power setting. (Looks like a battery.) Re: [Elecraft] NB continuous control
Eduardo, The K3 in my opinion is one for the masses. You can use as many or as few features as you wish. You can assign buttons to do only the specific things you want. Find someone nearby that has one then check it out. I love the receiver for eliminating so many issues I have had with other radios. I leave my TS2 off most of the time and it has a good noise blanker. But not the simplicity on the front panel of the K3. All I have to do is push and hold the button and I have a variable very adjustable setup. It does seem to be involved, but that is why this web site has so much help to get you past any complexity. Yes. It can do this in two ways: (a) RF sensing; (b) band data from the K3. The K3 can be connected to the KPA500 via the 15-pin connector. This will provide band data for the amp when the K3's band is changed. But it will also allow you to use the amp's band switches to change bands on the radio, see a report of amp fault conditions, operate/standby status, etc. The nice thing about having the K3 know about amp operate/standby status is that the K3 can provide two entirely different per-band power-level setups. When you put the amp into operate condition, it will retrieve all of the amp drive levels you set up on each band. When you go to standby, the K3 will use its barefoot power settings. Some of this is still being tested and has not been provided to field testers yet. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 from Orlando
Don, Thank you for your input. I would also want band switching to work with both. I know if I shut off the 2.5KFX it is bypassed. The issue is to control both, with one or the other shut off. I operate lots with the 2.5 shut off. I also have the P3, which shouldn't be an issue, I would think. I need to get the KPA-500 soon so the other half doesn't notice too much change and before she retires. Have been loading up the shack if you know what I mean. :-) Also, I have not resolved the KX-1 question yet, so when I get time will try one more time and if not successful will send to you. I am not about to retire, so am so busy I have trouble keeping up with all the great Elecraft stuff that I keep adding just so I have it. I even miss updates unless I am a beta tester. If I get the beta it avoid so much of the watching the list. Most beta's are perfect. Of course that simplistic solution would require that both amplifiers have an input signal line to place the amp into standby remotely - many do not, but modern amplifiers should IMHO. Older amplifiers typically have only a front panel switch. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/15/2011 6:15 PM, Bill K9YEQ wrote: Wayne, I have my THP HL-2.5kfx, is there a way to control both via the K3? Ed, I did the internal even though I use a remote tuner at the antenna feed for several antennas as well. I have 17 antennas at my station so there are certainly more than the K3 can switch, but I do run separate amps/antennas on HF and 6m and that entails manually switching cables. A second antenna port (call it ANT2) would really be useful for quick switching. I have a 6-pos coax switch for selecting my HF antennas. I kept an e-mail suggestion on how to implement a second ant (can't put my finger on it right now) with thoughts of building it (and if there was interest offering it as an aftermarket kit). But there was some involved circuitry to handle switching so not sure what it would cost. For example, if it's a 15A branch circuit feeding multiple outlets across several rooms -- and if wiring is formed with pressure-contact receptacles, -- and the receptacle you need is on the end of the string, don't count on a stiff supply. By contrast, if a dedicated 20A branch circuit is run only to the shack, uses clamp terminals, and the feed is shared between the amp and a few low-current devices, then output power should be more predictable with minimal voltage sag at the 500W level. Anyone considering a new 120V circuit to the shack to avoid these problems (in my case it was dimming lights) may want to consider pulling a companion 4-wire 240V circuit to handle all commercial amps, new and old. I will drop to 5 watts if operating near the QRP watering holes just so I don't cover up other low power stations, but for most causal QSOs, I run between 50 and 100 watts. I will have an amplifier on the air someday (I have done 55 years of hamming without one), but it will be used when conditions warrant it. I just don't see the point. Oh yes, some of these guys are running ESSB too, but I prefer to limit my bandwidth. Just because it can be done is not a valid reason to do it IMHO. Besides, I hate the laptop keyboards - they drive me insane. If I use a laptop with an external keyboard and mouse, I might as well use a desktop computer. At this price point, there are a lot of refurbished and off-lease computers out there (both laptop and desktop) that can serve as a dedicated hamshack computer. I have found the IBM (Lenovo) off-lease computers to be a good value and have been quite reliable. I have 3 of them in use on my home network and there are 5 more that I support on my church network. They just keep chugging along and seldom give problems. Most are available with at least one (often 2) serial ports and Windows XP Pro. For those who are Linux oriented, some can be available at 2/3 the price without OS. Look around the web - Google is your friend - whichever you choose, laptop or desktop, a computer dedicated to the hamshack is not an enormous expense, and if you have a home network already, it just makes sense (to me anyway). 73, Don W3FPR On 11/19/2010 9:24 PM, David Yarnes wrote: I've noticed a number of post (hundreds maybe?) about folks having one problem or the other with serial to USB converters. My station comprises of a Yaesu FT-817ND, W1 PWR/SWR Indicator, 3ft diameter remotely tuned home built 20m-10m Magnetic Loop antenna, and a 80/40 meter Trapped Dipole using the T1 Tuner for fine tuning. I figure I can always wrap plastic flowers around the Mag Loop and pass it off as a Christmas Wreath, but I will still want some sort of outdoor wire using the T1 tuner for the lower bands. I want to use the T1 at the antenna end vs the radio end as I am now. I know that the T1 has the ability to be remotely tuned via the port on the side, but I want to kick it up a notch. I'm running DC up the coax to control the capacitor motor in my Mag Loop using the standard inductor/capacitor configuration, and I want to follow the same plan for the T1. The idea is to use a push button to supply the 9v (I'll probably use a higher voltage and reduce it at the tuner to compensate for line loss) via the coax to the T1 (vs using the internal battery) and a LM556 Dual Timer at the T1. Key Up, Push and hold the button, the T1 turns on and boots up and at the same time the LM556 starts timing. After a preset amount of time (1 second?) the LM556 would pull the Tune line low via a Optical Isolator for say 1 second starting the Tune function. Watch the SWR on the FT-817 or the W1 and when it stabilizes low, release the button and unkey. Granted, I could leave the internal battery installed and just use the 9v to pull the Optical Isolator low but by adding the LM556 I can eliminate the battery as well. I know the power via coax will work, and the LM556 (or even a PIC) will work, so I guess I'm asking if there is a problem with turning On/Off the power to the T1 and is 1 second enough time to stabilize prior to initiating Tune? tnx de George WD0AKZ -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/T1-Remote-Tuning-and-Power-Supply-tp574 4646p5744646.html Sent from the [MM] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

That disables the freeze-on-transmit function. What you are viewing is stray IF leakage coming out the K3's IF OUT connector. The signal level is rather low and varies with drive level, frequency band, and the particular K3. However, I do find it useful for adjusting the transmit equalizer. With my K3 set for SSB, I turned on peak hold on the P3 and talked into the mic for a few seconds. The peak value is a fair representation of the transmitted spectrum. I could see that it was way too bassy (low audio frequencies stronger than the highs) which results in a muddy-sounding signal that lacks punch. Re: [Elecraft] K3 AGC THR doesn't go low enough
I would concur with Don. I do not use the preamp unless the noise level is very low. I use the attenuator on load bands or when there is a substantial noise level. I use AGC as I don't want to damage my hearing accidentally. Bill K9YEQ John, I find that true too - but ONLY under the following conditions: 1 - the preamp is turned on 2 - the attenuator is off 3 - I set the K3 to hear only noise (no signal) If I set the preamp off and attenuator on (normal operation with my 80 meter antenna) and then set the AF gain to listen to normal signals, the K3 is less noisy with no signal than using other settings for the AGC Threshold. In other words, you cannot listen only to the noise level and make a valid comparison. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/8/2010 12:08 PM, John Chappell G3XRJ wrote: Don, What I should have mentioned in my initial post was that the recording was made at midday on 80m and the noise from the antenna was only s1. For a given setting of the rf gain, increasing the threshold to 8 increases the noise, as can be heard in the recording. John G3XRJ The solution is to RAISE the threshold. I run mine at 008 which is the max. I also run the slope at 002 which makes the K3 AGC response more like my K2 - weak signals sound weaker than stronger signals. You can alter the slope without running into the situation where the K3 sounds noisy, but the signals will sound more nearly the same as the slope numbers get larger. If your local noise is high, increase the AGC threshold and the K3 will quiet down. There is yet another way - turn off the preamp, and even turn on the attenuator. You will have to increase your normal AF Gain a bit, but the noise will be reduced. If you can still hear an increase in the audio output when the antenna is connected, you can even reduce the RF gain. Don, I tried your recommendations and it makes the setup sound better than where I had it. The threshold increase makes quite a listening difference for me personally. Thank you for sharing. Please read all below carefully, and I believe I can offer some explanation. Let's study what the AGC SLP and AGC THR settings do and try to relate them to the perception that the K3 is noisy. IF -- the threshold is so low that the noise triggers the AGC (and that will be happening if the noise is causing the S-meter to have a reading with no signal) AND -- If the slope is set to a high value which makes all the signals have more or less the same audio volume, THEN -- The noise will appear at about the SAME audio volume as the signals. RESULT -- A K3 that sounds noisy :-( ! It is a combination of both the threshold and the slope that create this condition. The cure for that situation is to increase the threshold and reduce the slope. How much? That is an individual decision, but I have mine set to the extremes of THR at 008 and SLP at 002. I really believe the defaults are OK for a band where the ambient noise level is lower, but certainly gives problems on a band that is inherently noisy. Please make your evaluation while listening to signals and the breaks between signals - if you are hearing only noise, you will naturally turn the AF Gain up, and yes the noise will increase - not only that, with only noise, the perception is that one should use a lower threshold setting. That is because as you lower the threshold, the AGC response to the noise gets stronger, and the audio level is reduced by the AGC - what you are perceiving is exactly the opposite of what you wish to achieve. In addition, turn the attenuator on and the preamp off - again, if you hear an increase in the band noise when the antenna is connected, you have all the sensitivity that you can use for that band and antenna. The K3 remembers those settings by band, so you don't have to make changes as you switch bands. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/8/2010 2:23 PM, Mike Scott wrote: I have thought about John's wish for more AGC control. Re: [Elecraft] K3 :: firmware update failure
Let me add a note to the reflector about firmware updates so newcomers aren't frightened off by the involved discussion on the reflector about this topic. I find the process simple and it works well for upgrading any of the K3 devices. The procedures for firmware updating both P3 and K3 aren't fool proof. As those of us in the PC repair and building business know, directions are important to follow. And be sure not to interrupt the state of the update process by powering off the radio, computer or program before it is complete if one doesn't want to mess it up. Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Dick Dievendorff Sent: Saturday, September 18, 2010 1:31 AM To: 'The Smiths'; invento...@gmail.com; 'Elecraft Reflector' Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 :: firmware update failure This works, but it may be more complex than is required. The P3 currently sends initialization commands to the K3 when the P3 starts up, and it doesn't check before sending these commands that the K3 is acting as a K3. If the K3 is in its boot loader (showing MCU LD in the LCD) some of the commands sent by the P3 tell the K3 to start receiving firmware. In that state we don't get responses from the radio except on firmware block boundaries. If you turn everything off (remove the power plug from the K3 and P3, and if necessary, shut down the K3 Utility), then don't reinstall the P3 power plug, then start the K3 and the K3 Utility, the program should find the radio. There isn't a need to change the RS-232 cable, if the P3 stays off there is a bypass relay within it for the RS-232 connection. Some have reported that the COM port used by the K3 Utility is made unusable when the P3 gets into this state. I believe that may be dependent on the USB to Serial Adapter device driver you have. A PC reboot may be necessary to free the COM port. The K3 Utility Closes the COM port handle during all controlled termination scenarios except Task Manager termination. Windows process termination closes all open handles, but sometimes the device driver doesn't complete Close. If the K3 is in MCU LD state, the P3 must stay off from the time the K3 power is turned on until the K3 firmware load is complete. It's not good enough to turn the K3 on, have the P3 start up with it, and then turn the P3 off. During that brief period, the P3 sends the commands that influence the K3's boot loader. Usually you can just load firmware by turning the P3 off and sending the firmware. But if anything goes wrong with the firmware load and you end up in the K3 bootstrap loader (MCU LD on the front panel) at K3 startup, the P3 must stay off to recover. I have my P3 jumpered to not start up with the K3. It needs an explicit Power On button press, and I avoid this situation. Ultimately this will be resolved by a P3 firmware change to determine the K3's state before sending it commands that could influence the boot loader. The P3 owner's manual is being updated with the details of this procedure. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of The Smiths Sent: Friday, September 17, 2010 11:08 PM To: invento...@gmail.com; Elecraft Reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 :: firmware update failure Steve , you went through the same exact thing that I did. I did the power on button and the reset and NOTHING seemed to work.. I had the same issue with the polling not finding the rig. What I ended up having to do was 1 - Turned off the rig power supply, 2 - Closed the Port in the K3 utility under the Ports tab. Next I Then went into the windows Control panel, selected System, then into the hardware tab I selected Device Manager. From there I went into the com ports area, and I opened the com port that I was using for the K3. I checked on the speed, changed it from the default 9600 to 115200 (or 34800 doesn't matter) and I hit apply. After that I hit okay. Even if you don't need to make a change, change it just to restart the ports brains... I then moved the K3 serial cable over to the K3 (and out of the P3 completely) Next I turned the power supply back on for the K3, then I HELD the power button down for 10 seconds (until the red light started blinking). After that I went back to the K3 Utility and I went to the firmware tab. I pushed the button that said check versions now then low and behold it finaly read the port again on the rig.. I then hit the Download ALL button and everything worked from there. Give that a try and let me know if it doesn't work..I'm sure there's other ways to skin this cat... Chen, When it comes to cameras... all bets are off, as personally, I think they are bloat-ware and very processor overload. I have seen Canon, Kodak, Sony and Nikon programs which are so user friendly to make a great working PC turned into a sluggish piece of junk. It does take away most of the scare factor when updating the firmware. That being said, by now there are probably amateur rigs that update firmware through the ubiquitous USB memory stick. A memory stick could be a good way to save menus and configs of a rig, too. But you would need to add the cost of a USB connector and perhaps an additional $5 AVR microprocessor. I am seeing erratic readings in the automatic sensor switching mode that I am not seeing if I manually throw the sensor switch to S1 or S2. From this result, I am concluding that my sensor hook up is RF sound and the fault must be in the automatic switching algorithm of the W2. Re: [Elecraft] P3 and 6m pre-amp power? And the W2?
Wayne, Thanks. I will build separate cables. So far the P3 is something I have never experienced before... had no clue as to the features. Amazing to watch the modulation of SSB of familiar stations. I now know why some stations penetrate so, at least that is what I think I am experiencing. The narrow peaks of a transmitting signal which sounds the closest to normal, has the best signal. Those with flat peaks or multiple peaks are those which aren't quite as strong. Interesting. I am learning. Love the display!!! Great piece of equipment. Re: [Elecraft] K3: PRE/ATT Bug or feature?
Agreed!!! The preamp creates the amplification of incoming noise. Adding an attenuator after the preamp makes little sense. I do not use the preamp unless the noise floor is low. I use the ATT when the noise is high without the Preamp. Really helps pull sigs in. Forget the S meter readings other than to help you decide on how to use the ATT and Preamp settings This helps the dynamic range. I would rather listen to a clean S7 signal than an S9 + without clarity. Hope that makes sense. Oof. Having the attenuator and preamp on at the same time is completely nonsensical. The gain of the preamp is ~11 dB and the loss of the attenuator is ~10dB so they almost completely cancel each other out gainwise. But *all* the noise from the preamp will be added, so your noise floor will be significantly raised and there is *no* advantage gained. The total dynamic range will be reduced by at least the increase in the noise floor (that's assuming that the preamp is completely distortion free). The transmit would be the issue with moving the PR6. I will give it some more thought and play a bit more. Re: [Elecraft] Clock Accuracy and Outlook 2010 conversation deletion
In case anyone is interested. I loaded Outlook 2010. What a wonderful piece of software. I sort by conversations. I went from multiple messages under the Clock topic to just a couple conversations and was able to two-click them away to the deleted folder. I also have one and run 1.5 kw without an issue. Mine is located remotely in my garden shed so I never actually see it or hear it but it works as advertised. I swallowed hard before buying it but so far ( 2 months) it has not disappointed. I treat my system gently, rarely running over 500 watts from my THP HL-1.5 amp. Don K7FJ I will agree with the below email. I have a Ameritron ALS600 and an MFJ 998 autotuner. I bought this combo for use with my former TS850. When I purchased the K3, I continued to use the tuner, albeit with no rig control, as the tuner was connected to the TS850's tune button with a home made interface cable (which cost me $2, not the $60 that MFJ asks for the same thing). To tune when using the amp and the K3, I simply press and hold the XMIT button, after setting my tune power to 10 watts. The amp then makes about 40 watts and the tuner auto tunes. Pressing XMIT again concludes the tune cycle and away I go. I have it plugged into my secondary TS570D and it works with the tune button there like it did with the '850. I just implemented a $15 Radio Shack Video Switch to switch Foot Switch, Keyer paddles and Amp Trigger between the rigs. Works perfectly (tho I drool over the new Microham SO2R mini box!). The amp will eventually bandswitch using some Unified Microsystems decoders, but this is a future enhancement when I have time. The first '998 I received had a bad relay. HRO immediately sent me a new one, which then burned in powered on for three days with no issues. It has survived unscathed since then through many contests. I originally thought I would miss the tune button on the radio functionality, but with my somewhat resonant antennas (a Carolina Windom on 80/40 and WARC bands and an A3S on 20/15/10) I dont miss the feature. Just make sure and preset the MFJ by doing a tune cycle every 10kHz on all the bands I operate on and let it make noise for a while. Next time I operate there, it remembers the settings and if your antennas have not changed, the settings just take less than a second and one clack of the relays. Frankly, I am very pleased with the (knock on wood) reliability and performance of the MFJ998. It has been rock solid. I had a '993 before it and it too was rock solid. I had an LDG AT1000 that was horrible, so YMMV. Best MFJ devices I have ever owned. I will look into the new Elecraft autotuner in the P3 box. If it implements Kenwood protocol (for my backup rig's use) I may look into it, however, for the cost, the '998 is pretty hard to beat for what you get and how it works! Yeah, its kind of ugly, but it does work well. -lu-w4lt- Date: Wed, 16 Jun 2010 21:32:38 -0500 From: Bill K9YEQ k9...@live.com Subject: Re: [Elecraft] LDG To: 'Jack Brabham' k...@att.net, Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: blu138-ds10c04f17630a71ca39e11d9c...@phx.gbl Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii I hesitate to add this reply: I have had the original LDG tuner for QRP... The K3 doesn't support external auto-tuners, it has no hardware handshake protocol, such as Yaesu AT-300 or Icom AH-4 protocol. So there is nothing for LDG to support. There are many reasons to run an external auto tuner rather than an internal tuner other than tuning range. For instance, if you have a no-tune amp and an external auto-tuner capable of handling the amp, you don't need the internal tuner in the transceiver. In fact it's rather a nuisance since it could complicate communications between the high power external tuner and the rig, and at best be a waste of money. I see this as a functional short-coming in a high end transceiver or really any transceiver. I think there is a plan to implement Yaesu AT-300 external auto-tuner handshake protocol in the K3 but I don't know when. 73 Jack KZ5A K3 #4165 -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Rick Prather Sent: Wednesday, June 16, 2010 5:48 PM To: Phil LaMarche Cc: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] LDG The more I think about the silly response that you got from LDG I begin to realize why they don't have much regard for Elecraft as a market for their products. When you realize that most off-shore rigs have built-in tuners that will rarely handle more than 3:1 SWR they are a good market for them. But, the built in Elecraft tuners will usually handle up to at least 10:1 and in fact, in my experience, a higher mis-match than an LDG tuner it makes Elecraft users a pretty poor pool of perspective customers. Consequently, looking at their sales over the years they probably wind up with a pretty distorted view of the market share. Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter Review
Don, The greatest reasons for buying Elecraft are: Great bunch of people. If you jump in early on a new piece of equipment you won't be abandoned with no updates. You can update the equipment, just like the latest release. The service is better than anything I have experience and others should take notice. If you have an issue, you will find a cure. My Wattmeter had an issue. Two days later, board replaced, fixed. They even included the return label and postage for the defective board. (Love the Elecraft. Some called it Mojo.) Did I mention: Great bunch of people. Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- I just read the W2 wattmeter review in the upcoming July, 2010 QST on the member's only pages. Very good read and once again pointed out the excellent customer service we take for granted from Elecraft. Every negative in the intitial review had already been fixed by firmware updates when the author finally took the time to look. The only one found later was quickly fixed with an update from Elecraft when he reported it. Try that with the other manufacturers!! 73, Don, WB5HAK __ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Which headphones for stereo cw work? Summation
This is the reason I purchased Dynaco A50's back in the 60's. They were very close to flat. Music sounded as close to live as I could afford. Summation I believe the key word here is psychoacoustics. A lot of non-audiophiles seem to like a lot of bass - even to the point of distortion. Listen to the bass-rumbling of many autos on the road - it drives me nuts at traffic lights, but for some reason or another, earth-shattering bass that shakes the earth will sell products. Dr. Bose capitalized on that in the consumer market. I prefer sound that is as close as possible to the original live concert source, but then I prefer acoustical instrument sounds and classical music too. The music scene has shifted to hard rock and rap stuff, which I somehow cannot equate with pleasing musical sounds - but each to his own, I guess I am just a has-been in my choice of music - yes, kettle drums produce a lot of bass, but it is clean notes, not earth-shattering distortion (the fuzz-boxes used with electrtic guitars is another pet peeve of mine - just not pleasant to my ears), and I do have a sub-woofer on my home music system if that counts for anything, but it is not turned up with the controls full right. 73, Don W3FPR Bill W4ZV wrote: During his early years as a professor, Bose bought a high-end stereo speaker system in 1956 and was reportedly underwhelmed by the performance of his purchase. This would eventually pave the way for his extensive speaker technology research, concentrating on key weaknesses in the high-end speaker systems available during Bose's time, and focusing on psychoacoustics, which would become a hallmark of the company's audio products. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
