Backup question, and a tip

2005-04-10 Thread walter
Hello again,
just wondered if anyone had any suggestions about good (and cheap)
remote backup options for Macs.

I considered .Mac, of course. But at the moment the MB allocation seems
rather paltry. SpyMac offers a lot of space for email but not so much
for storage (I think it's again 250MB). One option is of course to
email oneself with one's important files as attachments. But it would
be cumbersome. The ideal arrangement would be a remote server to which
a backup application automatically uploads the changed files for the
day. There are several offerings out there and I was wondering whether
anyone had had good experiences (in Mac-terms) with any of them. I
suppose the ideal space would be 3-5 GB or thereabouts.

And now for the tip: although I love OS X, one thing that gets me is
that when I single-click on a file/folder name in a finder window (I
use the 'view as columns' option), if there is not enough space in the
right column, the left columns gets moved off to the left and the file
name disappears under the next column. It makes getting back to that
column a bit of a pain, especially when it happens all the time. Well,
I've discovered that if you command-click on the file name again (or
any area of the half-hidden column), the left column comes back into
full view again without any need to reach for the scroll bar. Neat, I
thought.

Walter.

You're a champ, Bruce!
It won't be useful this time round because the incident happened a few
weeks ago (don't ask why I waited so long before asking...), so I bet
no files are left now (I'm running the demo just in case...).

But it's great knowing that there is a data rescue utility for OS X - I
had done a bit of googling around and it seemed as if there was no such
utility around...

My problem is solved anyway because on the Apple Discussion board it
was suggested that I use the in-built screen capture, and indeed it
worked! Got my photos back again.

Thanks a lot,

Spoke too soon, Bruce. Data Rescue says quite clearly on its website
that it will not recover deleted files in OS X.

Basically it works if your entire HD is hosed. But it will only recover
files that had not been deleted. Not if you have 'accidentally' deleted
some files.

In my case, I had done a rebuild of the iPhoto library (like I
suggested to you a few months ago...).

Thing is, that left two copies of the iPhoto library in the Pictures
folder. I put one in the trash and backed up the other... Then I forgot
the other one was in the trash, and a couple of days later, having
forgotten I had left the other library in there, I clicked on the trash
and chose 'empty trash' out of habit... Needless to say, the new
library was the one in the trash...

So now you know how NOT to backup...
Thanks anyway,
Walter

iPhoto/iChat question

2005-04-07 Thread walter
Hello learned listers,
just wondering whether anyone can help me out on this.
Lost some iPhotos in some silly sort of way (and learnt to my
subsequent regret that in OS X there is no possibility of retrieving
deleted files, short of forking out thousands to data recovery firms...
I suppose this is what you call progress, compared to good old OS
9...).

Luckily I had sent most of the lost batch to my wife using iChat. As
it happens, the iChats were saved (hooray!), so the photos are still in
there somewhere. If you enlarge the chat window they come up really
big. Thing is, it seems impossible to 'extract' them, even by
copy/paste.

So the question is: anyone has any idea if and how one can suck out
pictures off iChat bubbles? The photos were not sent as attachments,
but just pasted right into the bubbles, if you know what I mean. It was
cute at the time. It would be nice if there was a slick way to get
them back and place them in the iPhoto album.

Thanks for any tips
(I've tried the iChat board but so far with no success)
Regards,
Walter

suggestions on how to speed this up? I update permissions every couple

Update to 10.3.8 is the answer. (but you'll get the fan-on-a-lot

Keyspan or Kensington?

2005-02-07 Thread walter
Hi guys,
I was wondering if any of you had had any experience with using remote
controls with Keynote.

I was checking out the Apple Store and the choice seems to be between
the Keyspan Presentation Remote and the Kensington Pocket Presenter
Wireless Laser. They cost the same, they same pretty similar.

I'd be grateful for any opinions.

Am curious as to what kind of rebuild is supposed to happen -- would
my iPhoto Library's folder structure actually get rebuilt to reflect
the many new Rolls I've created, and for which I've corrected the date
after-the-fact?
No idea what it does. I read about it in the Apple Discussion board.
Probably something similar to rebuilding any database, like the
compress command in Filemaker, or the rebuild database command in
Entourage/Outlook.

Also, when I tried the above-described shift-command-option Relaunch,
all that happened on my machine was that iPhoto quickly re-opened while
all my other active apps suddenly became hidden. Was I holding down the
wrong buttons?

John Bertram
I wasn't there when you did it, so I can't say...:-)
The keys are definitely shift, option(=alt), command(=apple). I have
the iPhoto icon in the Dock. So I hold the keys, then click on the
iPhoto icon, the program launches and it asks if I want to rebuild the
library.

I have 4.0.3 and 10.3.5 too.

While we're on this, how do you do this with iPhoto?
Dragging an iPhoto folder into iPhoto causes a huge mess. A new roll is
made for: each roll, each set of thumbnails for the roll, and any
altered pictures for each roll.
--
Bruce Johnson
Best way I know of is: throw away the current iPhoto library and empty
trash. Copy your old iPhoto library somewhere on your HD apart from the
'pictures' folder on your home folder.

Launch iPhoto. It should say: I can't find the iPhoto library, do you
want to import blah blah.

Say yes and navigate to the old iPhoto library and select it. iPhoto
should import the old library. To be really thorough, once that is
done, quit iPhoto. Then hold shift-command-option when relaunching it,
and iPhoto will rebuild the library. If all goes well, you should end
up with your old library exactly as it was.

SmartMedia printing on the road

2004-10-05 Thread walter
I was following the thread on SmartMedia cards.
I was wondering what you folks do when on the road in terms of printing.
I suppose my questions are:
-any good tiny weensy printers one can usefully take along? I googled
for it and came up either with very expensive ones or very bulky ones,
or both, or perhaps those needing proprietary paper like fax paper. Is
there really nothing clever and spacesaving that can print a few A4
sheets when you're stuck in a hotel room and need to print out the
latest version of your paper or whatever?

-I was thinking of getting one of those cute USB flash memory card that
you can plug into your 'book and move your files there, then go to a
print shop and have them printed. That seems a good alternative,
provided one has access to printing shops nearby and that they accept
such a medium (never asked or tried, so far). But: we have an external
Firewire LaCie (one of the Porsche models) that we use for backup.
Tried to take that to a print shop and their machine would not 'see'
the drive, which came formatted from LaCie and I hadn't bother
reformatting. Given that Panther recognised it without a hitch, I
assumed (for some reason) that Windows machines would be equally
accommodating. The 'net sites selling these flash cards (like Crucial)
say 'mac and pc compatible'. Anyone has any experience of taking files
on one of these things and getting them printed on the road without
hassle?

-given that both our 12 Albook and 20 iMac G5 have Bluetoooth, I was
also wondering whether one can get any of these cards with Bluetooth in
them so that one doesn't even need to plug them into the USB socket?
Maybe this is impossible/impractical, because rather extensive googling
returned no joy in that department.

In short: I would be interested (and grateful) to know what you guys
consider to be the best option for fully compatible printing when on
the road.

Thanks in advance for all your fantastic tips and apologies if the
questions sound daft...

Actually, this is living rather prudently...you turned off Guest
access, you're running a firewall, and you're behind an NAT. that's
pretty much what security you need.

OK. Good to know. I like to live prudently when it comes to our three
computers and the thousands of work hours tucked inside.

Of course we also do daily backups, but it's nice to know we are
(fingers crossed) reasonably safe as it is...

Thanks to everyone,
- just another quick question: anyone knows of a nice database program
with a nice OS X interface? The Apple website has some inviting
screenshots of Filemaker 7 that seemed to suggest this version was
going to be more OS X-like. I downloaded the trial and it looks exactly
like FIlemaker 6, i.e. a classic application hurriedly ported to OS X.
I've looked around but I don't seem to find anything that looks good
and delivers the goods. Any suggestions?
Thanks once again, super list this one, not just for laptop questions...

Virus Software Recommendation

2004-09-21 Thread walter
Given the ongoing discussion re virus software: in our home, we have
three Macs on an Aiport network that connects to the internet via an
Airport Extreme Base Station. My understanding is that the Base Station
provides some level of security, inasmuch as it 'masks' our Macs behind
its IP address. Am I correct in assuming that in these circumstances we
are fairly secure from direct attack, and that the main route from
which a virus/malicious attack could come is as an email attachment or
Word Macro? And that hence, given that we never open any attachment
unless we know that the person sending it, was supposed to do so, we
should be fairly secure? Probably I am wrong, and if so I am sure you
will soon disabuse me of my mislpaced confidence. I've no antivirus at

In my old Firewire iBook, a similar problem was sorted by simply
resetting the Power Manager and then restarting. I found the solution
somewhere in the Apple Knowledge Base. Prior to resetting the little

That's not a problem with the iBook, but with the TT and DW CD-Roms.
Burn a new startup CD from your iBook using a great program called
BootCD (available at versiontracker or macupdate) and add DW and TT via
the 'add applications' command in BootCD and you'll be in business in
no time at all.

As I sat down with it for the first time, I noticed that
when you boot up, if you watch the OS X screen as the system loads,
there is
normally a string of messages which flash across the OS logo as the
blue
progress bar makes it way from left to right.

I instantly noticed something wrong: the messages got only as far
as
Waiting for network initialization and the blue progress bar only got
halfway across its allotted run before the OS X logo disappeared and
the
desktop appeared.

I don't think there is anything strange there. The string of messages
which you see on a 'slow' machine tells you what is going on under the
hood at startup. With new machines, it happens so fast (as another post
said) that the 'summary' gets cut short.

12 1.33Ghz Tibook questions

2004-08-20 Thread walter
Hello listers,
just bought a 12 Tibook for my wife. Fantastic machine! Sleek, whisper
quiet, fabulous screen, so far it seems to be just about perfect.

A few questions, if I may:
- the 'book feels fairly warm to the touch in the area to the left of
the trackpad. I'm running a program called 'temperature monitor' and
the range of CPU temp. is from 42º to 58º Celsius. When doing WP tasks,
the temperature is 42º and only hots up when copying large files or
using Photoshop or whatever. So far it seems absolutely fine; it's just
a fair bit warmer than my Indigo Firewire iBook. I think I've read
widely on the web about the Powerbooks being warmish. The news today
about the 15 PB with overheating batteries got me slightly worried,
though. So the question is: is what I am describing normal for 12
Tibooks?

- my wife will use it both on the road and in her office. She will need
to synchronize her files between the PB and her 17 FP iMac. I bought
an Airport Extreme card for the iMac, and the two 'puters now talk to
each other very easily indeed. What's the best file sync program in
your view? I'm trying out 'File Synchronization' ($12), and I like its
interface and ease of use. It seems quite functional even for backups
to the LaCie Firewire Mobile Drive we use.

- the often-discussed question of fingerprints on the screen: on my
iBook I always place the foam sheet that came with the machine on the
keyboard before closing the lid. The Tibook seems to have two feet on
the lid that may actually prevent the keys from touching the screen. I
would be inclined to use the same strategy and place the foam thingie
on the keyboard before closing the lid. Any thoughts?

I apologise if these questions are trite. They have probably been done
to death on this list, which I have just joined. Any help/suggestions
would be highly appreciated of course.

All email clients are pretty much equal, and each one fits a niche. You

I have used Eudora for over a year. I have used Entourage for longer.

Re: Looking For Network Laser Printer

2002-09-26 Thread Walter Basil

Well...just as I was looking for a network printing solution, I came
across the Maccentral article:

Apple on Thursday launched a new promotion aimed at users looking for
a wireless printing solution.

Dubbed Wireless Printing the new promotion gives users a chance to
save money when they purchase a printer and wireless print server. The
promotion includes an HP DeskJet 5550 printer and a JetDirect 380x
wireless print server. If both products are purchased from the online
Apple Store, you can save US$79.

So I ended up buying this printer/wireless print server bundle for a
grand total of $436.92US. My entire house is now wireless internet, so
wireless printing seemed the way to go. Epson also offers this, and
their wireless is about $100US cheaper

Thanks to everyone for your input and suggestions.

 Hello,

Just wanted to get some feedback concerning .Mac. How many members
have joined? Is it really worth the money?I have not joined yet, but I
 am considering the possibility.

   Demetrius

Demetrius, it all depends on what you will use in the services.

Will you use the email services? I use this extensively, but was not
the deciding factor itself.

Can you use iDisk? Would you like to have a holding space for files
larger than email allows? Or could you use it to backup your address
book, internet prefs, etc.? Would you like to brainlessly publish your
pictures from iPhoto on the web for your family/friends to see? Would
you like to publish certain parts of your calendar/schedule for others
to see without hardly any effort on your part? The combination of iCal,
iPhoto, and email is what brought me back over to .Mac.

Do you already have virus protection? Virex 7.1 is offered as part of
the .Mac services, however there are other alternatives, that are
easier to use, and don't require a command line interface command to
update the virus signatures. I already use NAV, and many others on this
list tell me it is a piece of sh!t, but I love it, and all I have to do
is hit an update button to update my signatures, and it scans on the
fly, that is it it scans email downloads and internet downloads, or
file transfers from other computers, etc. Virex 7.1 for OS X does not
do this. You have to manually scan your files. Some people get around
this by making clever applescripts that automatically scan the desktop
folder when something is placed on it. This has no value for me, but
when they fix those two shortcomings, I will switch over to it. I was
just reading on the help forms of .Mac that Apple themselves use
brightmail something or other to scan all of .mac email, which uses
Symantec virus signatures. Funny, Apple should choose to use that, and
give us users something else... Also on the .Mac web help forums,
everyone has reported some fake virus that you can email or download
yourself to check your virus program's capabilities. Everyone on there
reports that Virex 7.1 for X has failed to report, or recognize it as a
virus. Who knows. I have never caught a virus, so my anti-virus
programs have always been insurance policies that I have never cashed
in on or benefitted from.:)

Can you use a backup routine? With .Mac's Backup, you can backup your
office/appleworks files, among others, your preferences, address book,
etc., and also specify what you want backed up. Since I have it, I am
giving it a shot, and it uses up about 25 megs of my iDisk. Not too
bad. Normally I have just backed up my Documents folder every 2 weeks
or so onto CD. This had no deciding factor on my use of .Mac, but now
that I have it I am giving it a shot.

You have to decide for yourself if the services they offer can be used
enough by you to justify the price of admission.

spend all that money for a cartridge I don't use.

I tend to stay away from Epson printers now. I have bought two of their
mid end printers a few years back, and the ink problem was my main
culprit. See, I hardly print. Maybe a few pages a month, and every now
and then I will have to print maybe 50 pages at a time (maybe once a
month), but other than that, I really don't print much.

The ink nozzles on an Epson are built into the printer. You can change
out the ink cartridges, but you are still using your same old nozzles.
After my first one, I bought another. This one was an upper mid level
model. It did the same thing.

I would have to spend hours cleaning the print heads, which waste so
much ink that it's pathetic. Even then, it wouldn't print right. I know
it's because I didn't use it much, but when I pay 300 and 400 bucks for
a printer, I expect a hassle free print, regardless of how much I print.

I went with HP after that, whose ink nozzles get replaced with every
cartridge.

Don't get me wrong, the Epsons print beautiful.I was very impressed
with their print quality, especially in color. They just weren't for my
printing needs I guess.

Refund from Apple (dot mac update)

2002-09-08 Thread Walter R Basil

Remember my little spat with Apple about the dot mac situation?

How they would not answer my questions, and eventually cancelled my
mac.com account after I had purchased the full .mac service...

I was just reconciling my bank account, and guess whatThey gave me
a refund, even though I paid with a credit card, and the small print
said no refunds given to credit card purchases.

I don't know if it was out of the kindness of their heart, or if me
contacting my bank had anything to do with it. I had contacted them and
told them about it. That I had bought without receiving the goods
that was promised, namely the support. Either way, I have my refund,
and I am satisfied. The refund was given on the 29th of July, but I am
just now realizing it was there. Yes, I have been putting
reconciliation off for some time ;)

The only feature I would use from .Mac would be the email, that is why
I say it would hold no value for me. It's not that I don't mind
spending money. Here is what I currently pay:

$54.99/month for cable ISP (includes email and news and dial up access)
$9/month my usa.com email account (10 Megs space)
$13/month for my supernews.com news account
$10/month earthlink dial up ISP (redundant internet access incase
Roadrunner goes down)

All these purchases mean something to me, and get used regularly.

That's exactly what I wouldn't mind seeing.

I mean, I am not a Mac addict because of the PowerPC chip.

I like the end result. The interface. I love X. Truth be told, when I tried
out my first Mac in 1999, it was the cheap low end iMac. I was going to try
it for a year to see what it was like while I was in Korea. I wasn't too
impressed. It crashed just as much as my Windows 9x machine did. I was going
to go back to a PC until I heard of the coming of OS X. So I stayed, and
bought the public beta, and even bought the high end iMac to run it on. I
was s happy with it, and that is why I stayed Mac.

So if Apple decided to use a Pentium 4 (or equivalent) in a closed
architecture system, I wouldn't mind.

I would mind if they used the standard PC architecture, because I truly
think Apple would die because of it. I don't think they make enough revenue
from their software. OK...so they sold 100,000 copies of Jag in their first
weekend, or was it 150? Either way...not enough to support them. They would
have to seriously downsize, and that would lesson quality.

My opinion of course...and everybody has one...just like...nevermind ;)

For those who are using Jaguar, take a look at your Energy Saver preference

preferences, one for when plugged in and one for when you are on battery.
Very very convenient!! Set your power options conservatively for battery

Antonio, we bought ours at the same time. Last November. I took advantage of
the price break on the old mid level ibook when the new ones came out, and
also maxed the memory out at 640. I have been very happy with it, and Jaguar

As Apple Computer Inc. draws up its game plan for the CPUs that will power
its future generations of Mac hardware, the company is holding an ace in the
hole: a feature-complete version of Mac OS X running atop the x86
architecture.

Jaguar installed - my first thoughts

2002-08-28 Thread Walter R Basil

I just installed Jag on my iBook DVD 500. So far I am very impressed
with it. Installation took about 45 minutes.

I did the erase disk option for installing, so everything was fresh.

Office seems to run the same. I had heart that it has slowed down
considerably under Jag, but I have not noticed any lag.

The new Mail seems robust, as does the address book. I selected all in
my Entourage address book, drug them to the desktop, and then drug them
all into the Address Book. No problem.

The speed boost is quite significant. I am very happy with it.

Although I haven't had a chance to chat with anyone with iChat yet, it
looks good ;)

Also, it is good to be back home!

Q: How do I convert an existing iTools or .Mac trial account into an

ten email-only accounts (with 5MB of storage each). You can then assign this
email-only account to an existing iTools or .Mac trial account, or create a
brand new address. To purchase additional email-only accounts, go to
http://www.mac.com and click Account in the .Mac menu bar. On the Account
page, click the Buy Now button next to the available upgrade options. Select
the number of additional email-only accounts you'd like to purchase, then
click the Upgrade Now button, verify your billing information, and click Buy
Now. To assign the email-only account to an existing iTools or .Mac trial
account, click the Email Account Management button. Enter the member name
and password of the iTools or .Mac trial account you want to convert, then
click Convert. Please note that once a trial account has been converted, all
the account's data files (except for email messages) will be removed from
Apple's servers. Other .Mac services, such as iDisk, HomePage, Backup, and
Virex, are not accessible to email-only accounts.

They have obviously updated their FAQ, becaue I am pretty sure I didn¹t see
this all when I checked. Or maybe I did miss it because I only read the top
portion and figured it didn¹t apply to my question. Either way, your answer
is in there :)

Re: I'm back...

2002-07-26 Thread Walter R Basil

Kyle,

There is nothing wrong with my ISP. I am still able to get on my wife¹s
iDisk from the same machine, as she is still on her ³trial² account, and I
can access her email as well. So I know the connection is there.

I criticized them pretty harshly on the forums, and also sent some feedback
to ³Billing Feedback² prior to this, asking why I was not getting what I
paid for, and gave them an ultimatum. I expected an answer in ³24 of my
hours, not their business hours² and if I didn¹t I would cancel my account.
If the account couldn¹t be cancelled, I would post my username and password
all over the net. There was also some pretty colorful words, which I
graciously starred out for them so as to avoid word filters (the billing
inquiry had this, not the forum posts).

I can go to www.mac.com, and it recognizes me from the cookies as wbasil.
When I hit the log in button, my username shows up, and prompts me for my
password. When I enter my password, Then I get the page that tells me my
membership has expired, and I can pay $99 to renew it.

The other subscription I am referring to is my G-Book list under
[EMAIL PROTECTED] I just wanted to letl whoever runs that here know, so that
when the mail started bouncing...that is why.

I won¹t get a lawyer...as I am in Kuwait right now, and the price of one
would be far more than the .mac was worth. I wouldn¹t go back to it if Steve
Jobs himself gave me an apology and offered to to me free for life.

I would like to get in touch with someone from Apple to find out if I am
going to be getting a refund. But you can no longer get in touch with anyone
there that I can see. You go to support for .mac in the regular support
area, and it refers you to support for dot mac. You need a membership to get
support for dot mac. My membership is expired.

I regret ever buying .mac

2002-07-25 Thread Walter R Basil

Talk about some really bad support. Now the moderators are deleting posts
that are exposing their bad support in their forums..ha! Wow. Apple policy
there is that your question gets answered in 1 business day. Then a
moderator comes on and says it's 24 business hours. So I ask him if that
means that I can assume it will be 3 days (assuming 8 hour work days)
until I can receive an answer, or rather I should allow 3 days before
complaining that I have not received an answer. That post got deleted.

I can't believe the sub-quality support, and services there. People are
complaining everywhere, people are getting banned from posting for 30 days,
its like WW3 up in there! The funny thing is, the support is the whole
reason I bought the account instead of waiting for my trial period to end.
I wanted to go into tech support forums and find out some information.

People are asking how they can get a refund. I am totally shocked that
this is coming from Apple. I will probably cancel my account there myself,
and if they don't then I'll just post my name and password everywhere I
can think of, and never look back.
I let my mind wander and it didn't come back.

Here is a post from someone that puts it all in perspective:
--
What kind of company can bill you $49 (or $100) and not have a customer
care phone number or email. Where else do you get to spend $100 and not
get 'ANY' service.

This is a service industry and the first thing that matters in this kind
of business it to provide 'excellent' customer care.

I hav been totally unimpressed by the lack of moderator support and speed
of response from billing. The fact that you have no way to deal with Apple
directly about your purchase is disgraceful and insulting to say the least.
It is totally unacceptable to take money from people and offer zero
customer service.

I will use my iDisk space and some of the other features for the year I
have paid for. But based on current experience and the attitude of Apple I
will not be renewing my account next year.

.mac will be a big problem for Apple if they don't get it sorted out for
users. You can't run a business like this and expect it to succeed.

How would you feel if you could not contact you phone company if you had
billing or technical problems, other posting a message and hoping for a
reply. You would change companies for certain, well that's what a lot of
.mac users will do.

Apple need to understand the strong feeling most of the users on here seem
to have about the support and service provided - WE ARE NOT HAPPY WITH IT.

This is a 3rd rate service at the moment, and no amount of extra functions
are going to make up for that. Continued success of a SERVICE, requires
quality and customer care, both are not evident at .mac

For those of you like me who are not happy with .mac I suggest to make
sure people who are considering joining understand the limitiations and
issues we have painfully discovered.

They are :-

1. Inconsistent technical service, Web Mail down for hours, HomePage
problems, poor iDisk speed.

2. Little or no support on the .mac boards, just standard company waffle,
that skirts round the real issues.

3. No way of contacting Apple regarding the service.

4. No ability to officially complain.

5. No redress to cancel and get your money back.

6. Below par facilities, eg, can't change User Name, can't subscribe to
forum threads - these are run of the mill stuff for other providers, it's
not exactly leading edge at .mac is it.

As paying customers we should have a way to express our dissatifaction and
get direct replies from Apple. This needs to change ASAP.

Windows or Mac) and the latest version of Office I might add, and none of
them have paid for it. They either steal it from work or borrow it from a
friend. I am the only one that I know of (personally) that buys my software.

2. I had one more reason - Entourage. I would say that is what caused me to
rush out and buy it.

3. I use Entourage X for my corporate email. It works just fine for the
email (we don't use it for scheduling). Contacts I can really do without
since I have all the email addresses I really need.

4. Guess I am the exception to this.

5. And again.

6. I can't help but to just lve those scribbly things. Steve is just
mad because he didn't think of it, I think. I still have my Newton MP 130
sitting around...but my Palm is much more productive *for me*.

The entrance price is rather high, although they are pretty liberal with
their upgrade policy. Which the more I think about it, should be because you
get charged almost the same price as office if you just buy one of the
components.

Hard to believe that no one has wrote anything about this yet.

I downloaded it as soon as it was available (I wore a hole in my Refresh

Re: shutting down pb pismo

2002-06-30 Thread Walter R Basil

On Sunday, June 30, 2002, at 09:17 AM, Kyle Hansen
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Reasons to shut down your Mac every night (even though Apple says it's ok
 so
 sleep it):
 1. It is a waste of electricity.

I could care less. I pay for it.

 2. If their is a power surge, spike or outage in your area it could
 damage or
 destroy your computer.

I have a quality surge protector/UPS, one that even cleans up the incoming
sine wave. Not everyone opts to purchase these, but I feel very safe using
it.

 3. Shutting down and restarting your Mac dumps the memory heaps and
 resets the
system solving a ton of potential issues.

It is a good idea to restart now and then. I can gauge the performance by
the fluid (or not so fluid) movement of the dock with magnification turned
on. It tends to slow down a bit after running all day. Logging out and
back in restores the fluid movement. About the only time I do a restart is
when I have to because of an update or software installation.

 4. A colder computer is a happier computer. Constant heat form even
 nominal
operation will reduce the longevity of your mac.

This has never been *proven*. There are two schools of thought on heat.
Yours, and mine which thinks that the cool down/heat up cycle induced by
powering off for the night will have the same effect that the sun/heat
plays on roads, only on a much smaller scale. Two things reek havoc on the
radar systems that I repair. Excessive heat (which is countered by the 23
gallon liquid coolant system and ambient air flow through the circuit card
assemblies) and powering down for the night. In these logic boards that
are much more sensitive to temperature variables than that of a computer
this makes a big difference. The difference between running for a couple
weeks without requiring any service and having to call us out to repair it
after they turn it off when it is not being used. Our answer to them is to
keep the thing running. We like that when they do because that means I am
not going out on a site call for a repair as often. Our laptops, not being
as sensitive as these cards, would probably take a much longer time
between failures due to temperature, and may not even be noticeable.

The difference between us is that I acknowledge these facts, and when
someone asks, I don't try to push my opinion on them. I offer them both
sides, and let them choose.

 5. Leaving your Mac on all the time is the equivalent of leaving your car
idling all the time. The tires won't wear, the transmission won't wear,
 and
your headlights won't burn out, but it's still running.

Actually, it's more like keeping a warming block on your engine and engine
sensors, so that you don't have to wait the customary 4 minutes warm-up
before your car's computer starts running its program based on the sensors,
and not the pre-programmed set of information it stores in ROM.

 6. Personal experience tells me so. I have been an Apple Certified Tech
 since
1991 and a Mac user from the Pre-Mac days.

I can say the same thing, except since 1988, and the ACT part, which
really has no bearing on the individual components that makes up the logic
board. No I haven't been a Mac user since those days (switched over in 99)
but the same laws of physics apply to components regardless of who puts
them together.

I will not be drawn into a flame war on this, so this will be my last
input on this particular thread. I just wanted to make sure both sides are
covered, and that the original poster has the information that he/she
asked for.

In sum, both schools of thought have their merits, and you must choose
what makes you feel better. If you are looking for an excuse to turn off
at night, and this does it for you, then by all means go for it. My wife
holds the opposite view of mine, and turns hers (imac) off every night,
and even just after a couple hours of use at time. My iMac stays on 24/7
(never sleeps) while my iBook stays on 24/7 but sleeps at night, and when
not in use. The Wife's been running good since 1999, mine since 2000, and
iBook since Nov 2001). The Kids iMac stays on 24/7 (with sleep) as
well...just because he is too lazy to turn it off. These machines are
probably not built with sensitive enough components that would really make
a difference either way, and the effects would not be felt for 6-10 years
if any.

Software Update Woes

2002-06-29 Thread Walter R Basil

I seem to remember reading a solution once to this problem, but I can't
remember how, or can't seem to find any answers right now. Not really an
iBook problem in itself, but it is happening on my iBook.

Software Update (SU) will run and tell me I need to update my Applescript,
Networking, and the July Security Update. I run them. Off a fresh restart,
no applications running (NAV is running in background, but has never
affected before). Not even Office notifications. They run through the
whole ordeal, do my restart, and SU tells me again that I need to update
them. All three of them. I click on the Log button, and it shows them as
being installed. 3 times now. I have even tried to do them one at a time.

Any ideas?

Re: Manuals WARNING:o)

2002-06-01 Thread Walter R Basil

On 6/1/02 6:02 PM, Dyna [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I can find no compelling reason to replace my 333mhz iMac
desktop machine or upgrade to OSX.

Then Don't. But on the flip side, don't put down the people that do. People
like myself who don't really care about the price, and can afford a brand
new one every year, sometimes 2 units a year. I could care less about the
upgradeability factor because I just go out and buy a complete new unit.
That's my choice. You really don't need to tell us whether or not you find
reasons to replace or upgrade. It's like you need to justify to us why you
are not going to do so. Your reasons are exactly that. Your reasons. I would
hope you wouldn't make a purchase based on what others think.

In the early days of both motor vehicles and computers this
was true. The personal computer is now over a quarter century old and
the Mac is now getting close to 20 years old, especially if you count
the Lisa. A new iMac won't do e-mail, surf the web, or process words
much better than my 3 year old one.

You are very correct. My first Mac was an iMac Rev. D 333MHz. It is still
being used by my family, and running OS X just fine. Sure it takes a little
bit longer to boot up then our iMac DV SE, but when all is opened and
running, it checks email just as fast as the DV SE does. It web surfs on the
same broadband network, and writes a mean letter.

Let me get this right- I'm supposed to bin my working 3 year
old iMac for a new one at upwards of $1300? Just so I can impress
every one with how cl it looks?

Of course not. I do it for myself, and no one else.

I can by a new desktop PC, monitor, and linux distro for
$600. Why should I spend $800 more for that fancy new iMac?
Especially given that a desktop PC is pretty generic, thusly cheap
and easy to maintain... unlike the iMac with it's many proprietary
 parts.

Why? Obviously you are in the wrong boat, and there is nothing wrong with
that. If you cannot justify to yourself why you use an Apple, then by all
means jump ship. Apple is not for you. Go buy yourself a nice PC, save your
money and be happy. Lord knows I wish I could be happy with a PC. I wish I
could buy an Hewlett Packard PC (which I also did in 2000, just to try out
Windows 2000 Pro to see if I would like it - I didn't and gave the system to
my Dad) and monitor for $800 and have the same level of satisfactioin that
my Apple gives me.

Myself? I drool over Apple. I have never been so satisfied with my computer
and operating system as I am now with Apple. I used PCs from 1988 until
1999. I bought my first Apple in 99, as I said earlier, just to see if I
would like it. Being that it was my trial machine, I bought the low end
model. I loved it. So much so, that the next year I bought a new one. 2000 I
bought an iMac DV SE. I would have bought a newer one in 2001, but I bought
a 4 year old Cadillac Seville (and paid for it in a year) for my Wife as
well as my iBook in November of 2001. I am crazy about my iBook, and plan on
getting a TiBook this autumn. Then there are my normal purchases. iPod (5
Gig, and soon to be 10), Palms (my new m515 should be arriving in the mail
within a week or so), digital cameras (Mine and the Wife's), digital video
camera, Adobe software, Microsoft Office v.X. A quick check of Quicken tells
me that I spent $11,800 on computers, hardware accessories (like what I
just mentioned) and software between last year and this year so far.

To most people this is a sign of some very serious issues ;) To me, I just
spend my money on what I like.

All this to say, shelling out the money for a new system as opposed to
upgrading or choosing not to upgrade is a personal decision based on each
individual's circumstances and opinions and priorities. We should not be
getting into argumentative dialogs over it that stem from something such as
the availability of technical manuals. To each their own, and viva la
difference.

Peace,

Walt

Re: TiBook Screen Scratches

Is there a good way to buff these out? Can I prevent 'em by putting a
thin pad over the screen before closing it?

I do two preventive maintenance procedures to keep this from happening, ever
since I bought my iBook.

1. I bought the leather screen protector from otherworldcomputing.com for
something like $13.00.

2. I use iKlear Apple Polish (not really a polish). I pay something like
$13.00 for a pack of 20 kits. I use one kit a week. (one came free with the
leather cover...which turned me on to this stuff)

My screen is spotless, and I do nothing out of the ordinary other than the
above, and I have had this iBook since November. Is the above the reason for
this? I don't know. I would like to think so, and it is a small price to pay
in my opinion.

They make two of these covers, one for the iBook and one for the TiBook (and
probably one for the big iBook now as well).

MacGimp

2002-05-15 Thread Walter R Basil

I just ordered MacGimp from OpenOSX.com. I know I could have downloaded the
source, compiled it, installed Xfree86 and what not, but I didn't want to
take the time to do all that. I wanted a one step installer process.

I was wondering if anyone in this list uses that program, and how it
compares to the most basic of features of Photoshop, from a real user and
not the product's web site. To give you an example of what I use a graphics
editor for, I resize, touch up, reduce red eye, change contrast and
brightness, and will play around with advanced features.

The Gimp is only meant to hold me over until I can find a deal on Photoshop
like I did on InDesign. Then I will purchase PhotoShop and probably end up
buying Adobe PhotoShop Classroom In A Book (CIB) on and learn most of its
features.

I am really getting into that InDesign, and I am only a quarter of the way
through its CIB.

Thanks,

Walt

Mail.app crashing

2002-05-15 Thread Walter R Basil

I have used Entourage since it was available, and with all the new hype of
Mail.app in the up and coming Jaguar, I thought I would play with it a
little bit. No such doing!

It crashes after about a minute and a half of run time.

Here is what the Console is telling me:
2002-05-16 07:50:13.045 loginwindow[255] Can't connect to pbs object
RulebookServer
2002-05-16 07:50:13.046 loginwindow[255] Can't connect to pbs object
RulebookServer

After that, when it crashes I get no message in the Console.

Weird. I have tried it in Root, my regular user, and my guest account with
the same results.

I have removed all startup items, and trashed the plist for Mail (which is
what I think is the preferences - at least I had to retype in my info and
all when I did that). Still nothing.

Any ideas? The only thing different I have done over here since I last used
it successfully was install Norton Anti-Virus, and Palm Desktop 4. I have
also disabled the auto-scan and correct features of NAV.

I for one am grateful for this filtering service. I enjoy having no

Even with the most high level of spam filtering in my hotmail account, I
still get as many as 20 spam emails a day there. I deplore spam so much,
that I am satisfied to have a couple bounced messages to me.

I also have some level of protection against this bounced email: everyone
that means anything to me, or anyone I desperately want something from,

I am no professional photographer, but in my experience with the common

no more/less than my digital I use now. Even conventional cameras have to
wait for the charging capacitors to charge up for the flash. If I turn the
flash off of my digital (HP Photosmart 318) I can shoot, and shoot and shoot
without worrying about any lag time. I have no use for taking 5 pictures in
one second, so I can't gauge THAT type of lag. 1/100th, 1/1000, 1/12000
shutter...means nothing to me, nor will it ever unless I take photography up
as my job. If that ever happens, then I will rethink my opinions.

Of course I normally shoot at the lowest quality setting for easy
transmittal over email to family., so that has an effect I am sure. When I
bump up the quality..there is more lag as it writes it to the CF I am sure.

I have left the film roll for the digital as my common household camera, and
I will never go back.

Dual Usb iBook vs Pb G3/333

2002-04-20 Thread Walter R Basil

On 4/21/02 1:36 AM, (G-Books) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Hi all,

I'll try to cut a long story short: After using my Bronze G3/333 for more
than a year I've come, during the last days across an occasion which I find
 quite good:

A friend of mine has introduced me to an Apple reseller he knows. This guy
is selling open box new iBooks which have been used as demos, so they're
brand new. The particular machine I'm interested in is a 500mhz/cd. The
price is quite fair (more or less Usd 900) so I'm quite tempted but:

Just a thought. For about $500 more you get a new one at 600MHz and a 100MHz
bus and lots more memory. I myself use a 500MHz with a 66MHz bus. I traded
price for speed, and I am happy. I also ended up upgrading to 640 Megs RAM
for only $160.

 - I'm worried about the display, it's a 12 and I'm quite accustomed to my
 old faithful's HUGE 14 ...

Don¹t worry about the display unless you absolutely need the extra 2 inches.
I went from using my iMac with a 21 inch monitor, to using this iBook with
the 21 inch monitor, to just using the iBook. I loved the sharp and crisp
display over size.

 - I also wonder if the additional horsepower which comes from the 500mhz
processor will be enough to cope with the G3's additional 384mb of ram and
it's 512k L2 cache. The fact is that I do not have plans to upgrade the
iBook's ram (128mb in standard configuration) as the prices back here in
Italy have started raising again very fast.

I can't say for sure whether or not I would use it if I only had 128 Megs
RAM. I wasn't happy with 128. Especially running classic. That was almost
impossible to run classic and a couple other OS X apps. I upped it to 256
and it was more acceptable. That was to only hold me over until I received
my 512 MB chip.

 - I'm currently running 10.1 and a barebones 9.2.2 on the 333 and it
really is fast, I know myself and I know that I would be disappointed if I
weren't to notice a significant improvement in speed when trying this same
 configuration on the iBook.

I think you will find it more speed than your 333. I am thinking of my iMac
333 compared to my iBook 500 DVD. My iMac 500 DV SE is a bit snappier than
my iBook 500 DVD.

Nonetheless the struggle is still underway in me. So I'm asking for
 opinions:

 - According to you is the iBook a good buy compared to my 333? Should I
proceed and get the Pb replaced or would it better for me to avoid and
perhaps use the money to upgrade the Pb (bigger hd, more ram, whatever)?

I know that everything is subjective and that it depends on me and on the
kind of things I'm using a Pb for but, I would all the same appreciate your
 comments on the matter.

 Thanks in advance

 Lorenzo

I have bought two of the HP Photosmart 318 digital cameras. You can pick

liked it so much, and is so easy to use with iPhoto that I had my wife pick

When I do plan on a printing, I change it to the highest quality, and it
prints out very well. Looks like a real picture.

Hope this helps.

 Hi guys,
In may im going to be buying a new g4 desktop but lately iv been
thinking a power book might be an option so I joined the list to ask
what are the pro's and con's to having a power book against a power book
besides the obvious of the portability.

I Can't speak from the professional side of the house (Powermac Vs TiBook)
but I can tell you about my experience as a consumer user. I have an iMac DV
SE 500, 1 Gig RAM, OS X 10.1.3, Last November I bought an iBook DVD 500 (640
Megs RAM, 10.1.3). I bought it in preparation of my deployment to Kuwait. It
would be much easier lugging it around instead of the iMac.

The iMac was a little snappier, but the convenience of having everything
with me all the time quickly caused me to lose the iMac and use the iBook
as my main computer. At first I just plugged in my 21 inch monitor into it,
but I kept finding myself using the iBook display instead. It was so much
sharper. Then I ditched the monitor and cleared up a bunch of space on my
desk.

When I return from this deployment, I plan on buying one of the new iMacs,
but I think I will continue to use this iBook as my main computer, and let
my wife have the new iMac (she is still using my Rev. D, 296 Megs RAM,
10.1.3). After all, I will only *need* the new iMac when I want to make a
DVD :)
