You shouldnt notice any font issues under Xorg really.
The directories changed frequently when Xorg first went into portage,
so that could have helped your problem.
But now everything is stable, so it should be fine.

ok, i have planned to try it again, but hadn't got there yet.
anyway, Qt can also wait a bit too.

[gentoo-user] wierd slotting of Libgtkhtml

i had libgtkhtml-3.2.3yelp-2.6.4 installed,

when i tried to do this, it gave libgtkhtml-2.6.0 as a dependency
indeed when i tried 'emerge --nodeps yelp' it refused to compile.
after 'emerge yelp' installing libgtkhtml-2.6.0 besides -3.2.3 ,
i tried 'qpkg' to see what it had to say about dependencies got :

gnome-extra/libgtkhtml-2.6.0 *
  DEPENDED ON BY:
libgtkhtml-3.2.3
yelp-2.6.4
gnome-extra/libgtkhtml-3.2.3 *
  DEPENDED ON BY:
libgtkhtml-3.2.3
yelp-2.6.4

how can Libgtkhtml depend on itself ??
why does Yelp need both slotted versions ??

does anyone have any light to throw ... (smile) ?

BTW i don't use Gnome, but install whatever bits other packages need.

[gentoo-user] weird OO font problem

2005-02-05 Thread purslow
i have a document which among much else contains some bold text.
last October, using the latest version of Open Office,
i was able to print it correctly using Times New Roman font.
today, using OO 1.1.4 , i can't : underline italics work, bold doesn't.

in OO, bold shows on screen with Times New Roman
prints with other fonts, eg Georgia.
in Kword Abiword, bold shows prints correctly with Times New Roman.

my system my printer have never given me serious problems otherwise.
does anyone have any observations about this strange font phenomenon ?

i've always used Lynx when i don't need a GUI browser

i realised -- just today -- that you can use its visited-links page

its one big limitation is lack of any support for Javascript,
but often you can extract needed URLs from source-view, esp pretty source.

If nothing else, lynx can get you arrested (at least in the UK).

No, tell me more about Gvim?

fix /etc/etc-update.conf so it reads :

  # pager for use with diff commands (see NOTE_2)
  # pager=less
  pager=

  # vim-users: you CAN use vimdiff for diff_command. (see NOTE_1)

  using_editor=1

  # vim-users: don't use vimdiff for merging (see NOTE_1)
  merge_command=sdiff -s -o %merged %orig %new

of course, you need to have (G)Vim installed on your system.

this will show the diffs in 2 nice vertical panels,
which you can edit to your taste, if something is customised,
or simply check through if not. it reappears for each file choice.
when you're satisfied, you exit Gvim enter '-1' (etc) as otherwise.

[gentoo-user] KDE 3.2 : simple question

this is rather elementary, but i need to learn.

when i ask 'emerge -p kde' (to get the new 3.2.0 ), it tells me :

  [blocks B ] kde-base/kdelibs-3.1.4 (from pkg x11-libs/qt-3.2.3-r1)

but when i ask 'emerge -p kdelibs' or 'emerge -p qt', i get the same.
'man emerge' says such conflicting pkgs may not need both to be emerged.

in fact, there's no sign of 3.1.4 in /usr/portage/distfiles
'emerge -p unmerge kdelibs' gives :

These are the packages that I would unmerge:
  kde-base/kdelibs
  selected: 3.1.3-r1

ie the version i've been using from my install'n CD .

'esearch qt' tells me i have 3.1.2-r4 installed.

is there possibly something wrong w the ebuild ?

Sometimes it's worth to read/compare manuals on another unix systems.
Some of them are really fine and web accessible.

yes, it's remarkable: it's not listed by 'man bash';
if you seek help via 'bash --help', then 'bash -c help set', it is listed.

i have it in my home-made distill'n of 'man bash',
but i've no record where/when i heard re it:
prob'ly on Mandrake User judging by the 'last altered' date on the file.

I can't tell from your original post,

sorry if it wasn't clear, but exiting X surely implies it has terminated.
yes, 'slocate' has terminated (the cron job just ran after today's start-up):

root: purslow ps -A | grep 'slocate'
  root: purslow

and i did read thro' the full listing from 'ps -A'.

When a process exits, any resources it had allocated
are automatically returned to the kernel.

exactly! that's why there is a problem here! it's not happening!

I would say that the used memory is purely due to disk cache.
I'm not sure what the 'calculation' above is meant to mean -
 'used + buffers - cache'?

well, if i do 'free', i get :

  root: purslow free
   total used free sharedbuffers cached
  Mem: 502492 10 0179117
  -/+ buffers/cache:194308
  Swap: 611 0611

the 1st figure in the 2nd row is the one i'm referring to:
before 'slocate' runs, it is  61 ; after it has finished, it is  194 ;
while 'slocate' is running, repeating 'free' shows a steady increase.
i know that the 5th 6th figures on the 1st row are less important
that Linux will re-use that space when it is needed for something else.
those 3 figures add up to the 2nd figure on the 1st row, ie 492 .

thanx for the initial responses, but now that the problem sb clearer,
does anyone have any explanation of what mb going wrong ?

[gentoo-user] Nvidia problem: test results

2003-12-07 Thread purslow
thanx for the responses to my query yesterday (repeated below).
i also had a look at the Nvidia Linux forum, which was depressing:
12 screens of msgs revealed 3 - 4 users w my problem (or close),
but no-one w any clue what mb wrong! based on that better help here,
i've tried some things out as systematically as i cd.

(1) 'modprobe nvidia' does seem to make some difference:
it creates the /dev/proc/driver/nvidia entries,
but can cause a problem if 'Option NvAGP n' has an inappropriate value.

(2) leaving the 'nv' driver in XF86Config simply ignores the Nvidia stuff.

(3) adding 'mem=nopentium' to the boot line in Lilo achieves nothing:
this was mentioned twice (at least) on the hopeless N-L forum.

(4) changing BIOS settings made no difference: i have a Soyo Dragon Ultra,
which allows increasing the 'AGP driving value' enabling
'DBI output for AGP trans' w an 8x card like mine (at least nothing blew up).

(5) setting 'Option NvAGP 2' in XF86Config got a line in the log file
'failed to verify AGP usage' (i kept all the X log files, properly numbered).

(6) setting that to 0 or omitting it while not issuing 'modprobe nvidia'
got furthest allowed me to get a vivid picture of what's happening:
w both KDE (a session w lots running) XFCE (my everyday preference),
i was able to get 'top' started, enter 'P' (to order by CPU use)
also get Gkrellm going: X is fluctuating wildly every few seconds
-- varying 0 - 30 - 99 % CPU -- , while 'eth0' is also doing a lot (?!):
on XFCE i had nothing else running (KDE had a number of things),
but Eth0, wh sb the mobo I/net connection, was fluctuating too
roughly at those times when the CPU was quiet. however,
after a couple of minutes both stalled, presumably w CPU = 100 % .

so does anyone have any further thoughts or suggestions ?
i've got adequate 3D rendering, eg for Xscreensaver, via CPU software,
but it does heat up the CPU, wh i'ld rather avoid.

is there any hope that things mt improve w the arrival of production 2.6 ?

[gentoo-user] Nvidia acceleration problem

2003-12-06 Thread purslow
i've been trying to get hardware graphics acceleration working.
i've read the dox looked at the more obvious things (i hope).
my graphics card is 'GeForce4 MX440 w AGP 8x'.

first, i tried using Gentoo's emerges 'nvidia-kernel'  'nvidia-glx';
in XF86Config, i commented 'load dri'  changed to 'Driver nvidia';
i also did 'opengl-update nvidia' 'modprobe nvidia'.
'startx' started KDE, but once started it became very slow, then stopped.

second, i tried using Nvidia's own 'run' file; X wouldn't start at all.

3 things seem to be wrong.

(1) the Gentoo approach doesn't create the correct libs:
there's a list in the Nvidia README most of them aren't where they sb:
eg /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so.x.y.z is missing
  ditto/libglx.so - /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/extensions/libglx.so ,
not to  ditto/libglx.so.x.y.z , as the Nvidia doc says it shd;
similarly for /usr/lib/libGL.so.x.y.zditto/libGLcore.ditto .
they are correctly in place after the Nvidia 'run' file is used.

(2) the Nvidia README says installation shd create files in /dev ,
ie nvidia0 1 2 3 ctl , which weren't there with either method of install'n.

(3) /var/log/XFree86.0.log says module(s) glx/nvidia compiled for 4.0.2,
whereas all the other modules loaded were compiled for 4.3.0 .
back with my usual working system (software acceler'n),
modules 'glx' 'nv' are compiled for 4.3.0 .
the log does claim that AGP 8x was successfully initialised.

problem (1) seems to be with Gentoo's ebuilds;
(2) mb with something like devfs, which i've never had to look into;
(3) may mean i need to compile the modules specially myself:
i've never compiled a kernel or module explicitly
(Nvidia's 'run' compiled the interface this time),
but i'm always willing to learn to do new things.

any suggestions wb most gratefully received.

[gentoo-user] nvidia 3D problem

2003-11-29 Thread purslow
i have a nicely working Gentoo system
(XP 2500+ , nVidia GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x ).
i'ld like to get 3D acceleration working, insofar as it's not now.
actually, i'm not sure whether this will improve the look of 3D graphics
or merely make more efficient use of my hardware.

following a recent thread here, i did the following:

  emerge nvidia-glx (also merges nvidia-kernel )
  comment 'Load dri' in XF86Config
replace 'Driver nv' there with 'Driver nvidia'
  reboot
as root, enter 'modprobe nvidia' (it says 'loaded but tainted')
as user, start XFCE or KDE the normal way

both start w the Nvidia splash screen,
but are slow, erratic finally everything freezes.

restoring the previous XF86Config, all is ok again.

ordinarily when Xscreensaver starts,
there mb a line 'dri missing from kernel (or :0.0 ? )' at top of screen:
might this be relevant ? i've read thro' the Gentoo 'dri' howto file,
which advises recompiling the kernel, which i've not done before.
a search of Gentoo Forum with 'nvidia' reveals nothing sensible.

does anyone have any suggestions ?

Check the Nvidia docs for what you need in XF86Config.

which Nvidia docs are you referring to ? i've looked at the Nvidia site,
which is enormous, w/o seeing anything useful.
'man nvidia' 'man nvidia-glx' get nothing (no surprise).

which i will look thro': is that what you meant ?

 Then try running opengl-update nvidia.

isn't that supposed to be run by the 'nvidia-glx' ebuild ?

gkrellm2 has support for sensors built in.

is this the only major difference between versions?

[gentoo-user] xcdroast slow to start

2003-11-27 Thread purslow
a couple of days ago, i got CD-writing working satisfactorily,
having emerged xcdroast-0.98_alpha13 , stable for X86 .
today, having done nothing special meanwhile except get sensors working,
Xcdroast is very slow to start --  1 m 30 s  -- both as user  as root;
it's a real puzzle, as there's no CPU activity showing this box is fast.
i had this problem on an earlier machine (Mandrake 9.0)
have forgotten the explanation whether/how far it got fixed.
generally, Xcdroast is a good enough front-end to Cdrecord etc
before i try eg K3b as an alternative, can anyone suggest a solution ?

look thro' /var/log/emerge.log ,
which lists everything you have emerged, incl dependencies.
it will show what was emerged for Gnome, which you can remove,
then you can check via 'emerge -p packagename'
to see whether any subsequent emerges used any of the dependences,
when you can re-emerge them as still needed.

[gentoo-user] loading modules at boot

2003-11-26 Thread purslow
i've never been clear re the difference
between loading a kernel module during a session loading it at boot time.
'modprobe modulename' loads it during a session AFAIK,
but how do i ensure it gets loaded the next time i boot ?
i've looked thro' various man pages checked in /etc , but it's not clear.

the specific question is getting CD-writing to work.
i've just got it working this session
after adding 'append hdc=ide-scsi' to the stanza in lilo.conf ,
but after a reboot (due to a separate problem now resolved)
i had to reissue the command 'modprobe ide-scsi'.
should i add 'ide-scsi' to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4 ?

what is the proper command or procedure to get a module loaded at boot time ?

You can double check this by running 'rc-status'.
If they are not in the list, then they don't start by default.

don't you have to do it per daemon, eg '.../adsl status' ?

there's a good Gentoo printing doc.

generally, Gentoo is easier to manage than binary distros,
as it sets things up elegantly leaves the user with real control:
it tries to avoid making assumptions on the user's behalf.
it's a good idea to browse thro' /etc to see how Gentoo does things.

Right now I have Kmail available through KDE.
I need a mail client that will support Gnupgp or similar..

everyone else seems to be recommending GUI MUA's,
but don't overlook Mutt, which is simple, powerful hi'ly configurable.
if you try it, you will need an MTA to actually send your msgs:
i use Ssmtp, which is lightweight easy to configure.

Gvim has a very good 'splitdiff' facility: look under 'Edit' menu.

Just in case any of us run into this same problem, how did you solve it?

there are 4 compressed files which need to be copied.
after copying 1 of them, Knoppix became confused,
so i rebooted the Knoppix CD, unbz2'd the file copied the next,
then repeated the process 3 times till everything was in place.
after that, it was possible to pick up from the Gentoo install doc.

an alternative wb to install another Linux -- eg Slack/Mdk w dft specs -- ,
then use that to make appropriate part'ns copy decompress the files.

of course (grin).

2.5GB weren't near enough for me, 2.7GB neither,
it worked with 3.3GB (being a total of 30hours cpu-time)
Second the motion. On my ext3 system,
in excess of 4gig were required last time I compiled!

i built a fast machine w the intention of trying Gentoo
i'm pleased to find i seem to have got it right (touch wood etc).

The easiest way to record all of the output wb to issue the command:

There will be no output to the screen. When the command has completed:
   # cat kdegraphics.txt | more
You can move through the file one page at a time
by hitting the space bar. you can usually scroll back about 300 lines,
one page at a time by pressing shift plus PageUp.

you can also read the file as it's being created w the command:
  tail -f kdegraphics.txt (exit w ^c ).
also, there sb a file /var/log/emerge.log w details of all emerges.

It's almost a fact that most distros lean towards either Gnome or KDE.
I tried KDE a year ago with Debian and was pretty impressed. Then again,
this may have been because of Debian's very slow updates to Gnome 2.2.
I guess I just wanted something different.
I'm now using KDE 3.1.4 and am disappointed...
My preferred desktop still seems to be Enlightenment, in fact. :-)
So, I'm considering getting rid of KDE and going back to Gnome.
What do people think ?? I know it's *my* choice, of course.

there are other choices, after all (frown)!

those who know it -- incl me -- swear by XFCE, now out as 4.0 .
i had no problem emerging it it's running perfectly as i write this.
check it out at www.xfce.org/ .

You must have a very fast connection and a *very* fast computer.

is there a way to tell Emerge to use a specific dir for temporary storage?
i have a 12 GB part'n specifically intended for that kind of thing,
