I purchased the case with them. Currently we don't have enough for a lab set up scenario (15 as of today -- YEAH!) . . . so they will just be housed in classrooms and stored by the teachers. I think when we purchased the syncing stations (suitcase type) there was a more expensive option of a cart. Re: [info-tech] Managing iPods/iPads and Magic TV Remote
I am getting the 16GB models iPads (which were the $499 model), which for purposes now will suffice memory wise. This next shipment of Touches we are getting will be the 64 GB model, as they will not only be an additional Touch for our centers/activity stations . . . but teachers were also wanting a digital camera and video camera for their classrooms . . . so we went all out in regard to memory so these Touches can also be used for those various uses. We went paperless last year, and no longer printed out registration forms per student (which we had been running out of JMC by creating the registration form and letting JMC populate the information we already had on file and wanted to verify/collect). We set up 6 computers as parents walked in, and secretary's confirmed the information on file (address, emergency contacts, etc.) in JMC, and then people were given a sheet with all the items they could pay for on it. Some then went to the labs to pay online using Payschools/ IASB, while others went to the check out line to pay by cash. Worked pretty slick, and parent's weren't having to fill out/correct forms when it could all be done right there at the computers. I had a computer set up and took all the new students/families who showed up that day and entered them into JMC and collected all the info we needed from them.) Re: [info-tech] First 18 hours with an IPad...
Really this will have no new insight as to the educational opportunities for the iPad - or whatever similar device anyone uses with students. What been disturbing (at best) is to begin a reference/ comparison/review of a post to a student with a disability in some type of sick humor -- on a list serve that exists for educational purposes nonetheless. Were the iPad or iTouch a PC based device is really irrelevant. What I do know is you can use this device to deliver and differentiate instruction. You can use it as a re-teaching tool for those who need assistance, or as an extension of the curriculum for those who would benefit from additional activities. I know I can give it to students to independently search for information, and/or use it for information sharing purposes. I can use it as a listening center, or an individualized listening station for students to listen to audio versions of the text or test or assignment. I can use if as a book reader. And I can get it in the hands of more students for the price than I could lab (which won't do all the things the iPad does)--and I need the lab(s) in each building because those machines do things the iPad won't do. It's creating a learning environment in which students can maximize their potential. It is the job of all educators to meet the needs of all learners. As technology directors - we are responsible for providing visionary leadership to help meet the needs of all learners, and be able to offer ways in which technology can differentiate instruction for everyone. Every decision you make should be based upon the impact it will have on students-whether you always agree with the decision or not. It's part of being an educational team member. My decisions and input are not based around what makes my job easiest . . . and there are directions we go based on its impact on students, and not what is most convenient for me (or for the teachers and that matter). It's easy path to follow to find fault with everything (including the students) and to never let educational technology opportunities (or ideas) into your district. A good leader takes everyone where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don't necessarily want to go but ought to be.

RE: [info-tech] Electronic Devices
I am sure this dicussion could go on forever . . . and since I'm on vaca. enjoying a cup of coffee and doing little to nothing, I might as well take the opportunity to offer my two cents. :-) I think there is a need for balance; however I strongly believe in the concept of teaching people to be responsible users of technology. Surely this is some type of 21st Centrury Skill -- especially as we look at developing students to enter the workforce? Studies have shown that places that allow cell phone usage in the classrooms -- with guidelines and expectations -- really have fewer problems than those of us who ban their use. These are devices --wireless and data -- that students aready carry on them. Especially in times of financial situations we are in -- shouldn't we be finding ways to embrace this, and establish guidelines -vs- our time spent on how not to allow it and ban it? Staff need to be trained and guided on how to use these devices in the classroom. Students need to be trained on appropriate use during school hours. To assume it's all bad and nobody will use it correctly - not sure if I agree with that either. We often assume everyone knows these things, and well, we know what happens when one assumes. ** At this point, I will interject, yes, we still have cell phone bans, although some teachers have taken the initiative to allow these to be used in the classrroom periodically with good results. I am hoping part of out tech focus on PD next year will be allowing and using these devices. . . and how,in turn, teachers can teach students appropriate usage of these devices. These would be discussions and brainstorming sessions that I would love to be a part of with my technology peers at a possible future technology round table for a tech. mtg. We all don't have to leave agreeing, but as technology leaders in our schools, and the area, wouldn't it be great to discuss ways we use this, problems we encounter, possible problems and solutions, etc.? Have a blessed Easter, everyone! Jackie
[info-tech] SMART Board Presentation
On a totally unrelated note . . . Chloe from Bradfields is coming to our school district on April 28th conduct SMART Board training with our staff. Since she is coming, I asked if she would be interested in doing a demo session with our AEA tech. group. She will be coming to the HS library at 12:30 that day, and we can have the afteroon for the demo. Other teachers, admin and others are welcomed to attend. If you would RSVP to me . . . I'll make sure we have enough treats for the afternoon. :-) We will begin the SMART Board training at 4:00 that day . . . if you already have these and have some people who would like to go through the training who haven't already -- they are welcomed to attend as well. We will also be having a users group session at the same time for our staff who already have had the training and just want to work through some questions and useage type things. Again, let me know so I can be set up for that. I think I am going to sit in the sun now.

Re: [info-tech] Same Questions, different year...
I am old fashioned here . . . all computers have a generic student log in that logs them on at start up. So beginning with our pre- school they all have access to the internet. Because CD ROM games became outdated and were for the old Mac OS, and seem spendy to replace . . . online educational games are what the teachers are encouraged to use (and many do) at the computer workstations in their room during center time. All of our buildings have a lab . . . and I know with our new math series there is a web site that goes along with the text/learning/concepts -- so beginning at KDG our teachers are taking kids into the lab to use the online portion of the math series. Teachers and associates are in the labs to assist and supervise students in the elementaries. 4th/5th grade building -- we have a folder for each teacher on the computer and that's where kids save to. Beginning in MS (currently 6th grade) students receive a home folder on the network for file storage. Classroom computer usage is supervised by the teacher . . . we do have a lab at the MS in the library, and so students are allowed to use those during study hall under the supervision of the person in the library. Same scenario pretty much at the HS as MS . . . the labs are for classroom use only. Students use the lab in the library if they need to work on assignments during study hall. Facebook (and YouTube) -- I quit playing the games of blocking it . . . finding kids using back tunnels to get in . . . blocking that . . unblocking it because somebody needed into it so kids could get a video or pictures and then having somebody tell me I needed to block it because kids were on it during their class. There is an AUP kids sign off on . . . if they are inappropriately using their computer privileges there are consequences (just as in the real world at work). soapbox In my mind that's a supervision issue . . . if you allow kids to be on there, don't complain they aren't getting work done. end of soapboxAnd really, there are things here (and other Web 2.0 things) that have information kids need/can use for school projects. As far as creating Facebook groups for school things . . . OK Im a little old fashioned/more conservative on that one. From what I know from using Facebook in the past few months . . . I question how you can have some control over that in a PR/guideline sort of way-- because in the end it is school related. Haven't dealt with this one yet . . . but we had these discussions when taught teachers how do their their own classroom wikis and publish these. -- same train of thought -- teachers having access this year to mass email parents from their gradebook. Currently we allow both -- but on the conservative/what if side talked about how before these things there was always a route to proof things before they went out to parents and the public. Now you go on good faith. Which we haven't had problems, and I don't expect any . . . but you do have to have that discussion. We have encouraged the use of wikis, Googledocs, blogging in the classroom . . . and for PD this year have required staff to post their reflections, etc. on the PD wikis and discussions we have set up. As more and more staff become comfortable using these . . . it becomes easier to set expectations and guidelines for how students use these . . . and I have seen all this as positive to date. But I still think the Facebook thing with school groups is a big risk and can of worms waiting to be opened. (Did I just contradict myself? Probably!) On Feb 4, 2010, at 3:37 PM, Pearson, Jeremy wrote: Everyone- I have a few questions I would like to pose to the group for input. 1 – At what grade do you start giving students Internet access? Our current practice would require someone to log the computer in with an account that would have Internet access. I assume that whatever your situation is, you expect the teacher to still supervise their use. 2 – At what grade do you start giving kids their own personal login, with a home directory and internet access. We are doing home directories at 5th grade, and Internet access at 7th grade. 3 – Facebook. [info-tech] JMC/SQL ?
Hi! Thanks to everyone for the info with Skype -- I downloaded it today and will play around with it in the upcoming weeks. My question for today -- for those who use JMC: do you run the SQL version? This is supposed to deal with some of the others currently using message if I recall correctly. As I get ready for next year -- anything special I need to run that? Re: [info-tech] Personal Wireless Devices
I do not think we have a formal policy on this one . . . If kids bring their laptops and touches, etc. -- I have let them on at the hs. My plan is to pull pw off the base stations (which is all we have right now) - esp at the ms and hs level so kids can get on. Haven't had problems yet with this (or at least none that I am aware of--if you read about it tomorrow you have jinxed me!). More and more kids are starting to bring their touches in and wanting to get on. A few have asked to have their laptops on -- again the number has been like 2 or 3 a year. The instant looking up information in class if there has been a question (or having it available at your fingertips) has been a useful tool according to some teachers--not having to stop and do it on their machines With our new building project, part of the networking component bidding will be to set up a private and a public network for the reasons mentioned above. Then hopefully (if I understand all this networking correctly) students will have access with their devices, but it won't wreak the potential havoc on bringing devices on the school side. Re: [info-tech] Bulk Email
Any district mail goes out from the district site in JMC so we are not duplicating. Each building does send home their own newsletters, alerts of grading periods endingetc. Lunch balances are done once a week here I believe. (again, from the district app). Daily assignments are kept in JMC or on the web page. Announcements for the MS and HS are on the web page. The HS uses a Googledoc for both assignments and the announcements. Both are at the bottom of our home page (www.algona.k12.ia.us). Re: [info-tech] Best Practices LCD Projectors
Expanding off of this . . . What does everyone do regarding best practice? After reading the suggestions/tips Tim sent out earlier . . . this one . . . I have often thought that if I could put together a quick troubleshooting card -- or tips with the technology (such as best practice) -- maybe I would not be drained of energy with things I call minor repair/quick fixes. The one that always comes to mind is quick networking/ troubleshooting: ex. I can't get mail. 1) Can you get on the internet? Yes--probably an attachment too large . . . go online, and give the instructions for deleting. If no, can your neighbor get online?Yes/No. Are you set to the right location? , etc., etc. While I believe I am the eternal optimist . . . the pessimist in me says it's not worth the time because they'll just call or email anyway. Then we'll all get frustrated when I say Have you checked your card? Of course, people could become mini troubleshooters -- if you enforce no help until you have gone through the steps (or things like did you restart). Does anybody have something like this in place? I've wondered if it would be good to give with the gradebook instructions in the fall . . . and any other informative tech. integration or the such. Thanks LCD Projector Best Practices: The standard rating for a projector bulb is about 2000 hrs of use. The replacement cost of the bulbs is about $300 each. Under normal conditions the bulb should slowly get dimmer until by about 2000 hrs it is dim enough to need changing. They are not supposed to actually burn out (but sometimes they do) The life of the bulb depends on the number of hours it runs, but also on the way it has been warmed up and cooled down. Here is a summary recommendation for proper use: 1. If the projector is turned on, be sure it runs for at least 20 minutes before turning it back off. This insures it gets completely up to operating temperature and has been stable at that temperature for a while before cooling down again. 2. If the projector is turned off (put into sleep mode, never really turn it off) then do not turn it back on for 30 minutes. The bulb has to get completely down to room temperature before trying to power it back on. 3. During the day if you are done but will use the projector again in less than 20 minutes then leave it on but you can press the video button to get it to the blue background. You can then turn it back to computer when you need it again. 4. During the day if you are done and WILL NOT be using it for 30 to 40 minutes then please do turn it off and allow it to cool down completely. (we have some who go to lunch and leave their projector running) 5. Out in a corn field our power goes out. I asked about power on/off problems with our electricity but was told as long as the projector is asleep it should not be a problem, other than those times when the power does the on/off/on/off flashing which is hard on everything. -- Chaos Theory is a new theory invented by scientists panicked by the thought that the public were beginning to understand the old ones. ~Mike Barfield -- Lance L. [info-tech] Read Write Gold/Texthelp
On May 6th at 10:00 Paul Brown from Texthelp will be coming to Algona to share information about Read Write Gold. If anyone else is interested in attending, I thought I would open it up to other schools. He thought it would be about an hour presentation or so (and can stay longer to answer questions). We're looking at it primarily for an assistive technology piece, although there are other curricular possibilities with it. Please share with others in your district who may be interested in attending (special education teachers, curriculum/administrators, etc.), and rsvp to me by next Friday (May 1st) so I can share numbers with Paul to make sure he has enough handouts and information for everyone. Thanks, and have a great day! Jackie Here is a summary of what Paul sent regarding Read Write Gold: ReadWrite GOLD helps struggling readers and writers access and organize information on their PCs or Mac computers using a floating toolbar that works directly inside of popular computer applications and websites including Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, Safari, and PDFs. Word prediction, text-to-speech, phonetic/talking spellchecking, visual organization, text-to-MP3 creation, research organization and many more tools are available through it's non- invasive design, allowing students to read, write, and complete schoolwork independently without the stigma of traditional assistive technologies. A 25% discount on all licensing options is available to Iowa schools through an agreement with the AEAs and IEC, including an unlimited site license which gives access to the tools on all computers within a school or on a campus. Re: [info-tech] iPods in the classroom
Sort of a ramble to follow . . . but just started thinking of uses/ how we are/will be using. Summary: I think there are uses, there is some hardware I would suggest, and you are going to need staff development. With our last lab purchase, we took the option of 40 free Nanos -vs- 5 more computers. We have used them for tests a majority of the time--teachers have recorded their tests and those who would like to listen to them while taking have that option. Then you're not having one person reading a test for 5 students, for example. They are able to go at their own pace. Again, this is relatively new . . . I offered a class last fall for HS staff, and will be doing another district wide this spring regarding how to record the audio files (we use GarageBand and create podcasts). As this becomes more in demand/ used . . . we will be needing to purchase some docking/charging stations. There is a cart that allows you to sync the file you want uploaded to all at one time. You can also purchase smaller sized (I think allows you to charge 5 at a time.) I can also see these become listening centers at all levels, as more people become trained and comfortable using them. Belkin has a product that allows you to connect up to 5 headphones to one iPod--I bought it for my kids (well, sort of for me as well) for around $20 this weekend. That's how I could see the listening center thing take off at all levels. Also some great uses for listening to Podcasts, things off of iTunes U . . . again, all areas of focus in the tech. staff development stuff I'll be offering this spring and summer. I could also see this for audio books and loading the books for kids to read along to. (Isn't it 5 licenses per download?--pretty good deal) From some of the courses I offered last summer . . . I know some of the teachers were using the recording feature from GarageBand and then having kids read speeches, record timed readings, etc.--and then were going to have students listen to their own voice. The upper level grades were also going to use it as a critiquing tool.) This could be another use with the iPods for things like speech class. Oh, and I also bought quite a few USB microphones. I think I have Logictech off the Co-op that were around $15 each. This allows some flexibility for the recording and kids or the teacher don't have to be talking into the computer. When you are using a technology the kids are using, I think that is great as well! Feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions. Thanks! Re: [info-tech] Teacher lock-down
Our teachers do not have admin rights (well, most don't). I'm not sure if it's the fact we have been able to update machines in a reasonable time, or if it's the fact they do not have admin rights (I don't have a controlled variable there)--but have had MUCH fewer problems since not allowing them to be administrators. not that I have many, because, after all, we mostly have Macs LOL They do have access to all applications installed on their computers. This includes adding printers. I also allow them access to things like the ability to change their desktop background, energy saver settings, etc. (skinny rabbit in my mind . . . plus it gives them some freedom with their computer). When I do get a request, I install the programs they need. Same filtering as students. I think there is something to be said for some lock down/control (for lack of a better term)--as a subtle reminder these are school issued computers --not personal computers. (although there is some personalization to put your kid's picture as the background on the desktop). Re: [info-tech] Updating Computers
I'm not so concerned with all the security updates and such with the Macs that I would be with the PC environment. another reason I like the Macs I think it would be a nightmare to continually have to touch each computer. Unless I can run them all around the same time . . . I don't mess with having different versions of everything running. That gets too crazy with different versions of software. I think you should ask for all new computers on the Mac platform if you can't let them do it nor do it how the others have suggested. Then you don't have to worry about it. Jim Jackie Fonley jfon...@algona.k12.ia.us 2/11/2009 1:03 PM I'm not so concerned with all the security updates and such with the Macs that I would be with the PC environment. another reason I like the Macs I think it would be a nightmare to continually have to touch each computer. Unless I can run them all around the same time . . . I don't mess with having different versions of everything running. That gets too crazy with different versions of software. I think you should ask for all new computers on the Mac platform if you can't let them do it nor do it how the others have suggested. Then you don't have to worry about it. Re: [info-tech] p!mp my cla$$room
Ok . . . well we've bought a few --Promethean, I was impressed with those-- (because there was money available), but I am embarrassed to say I haven't installed them yet. Not sure of where to put them to be most beneficial, and not sure where the permanent solution is. I would like to think we're doing OK--all of our teachers have laptops, the three upper buildings have projectors, and the two lower buildings have a few projectors currently to share. HS is almost fully stocked with document cameras, our upper elementary building 1/2 with them, and the rest will hopefully have them and the projectors (for those who don't currently) by next school year. While the coolness of a smartboard excites me (a techie)--I'm wondering how much more the smartboard does than the document camera (for most) at this point. I will still be doing staff development this winter/spring on how to do powerpoints and AEA online, video streaming, --as well as online learning, iLife suite and some higher end use. I just think there are so many skills and comfort levels that need to be overcome before we move to learning and figuring out an interactive whiteboard and something that a cheaper alternative can probably take care of (doc cams). Of course, I'm thinking of how could we be using cell phones in the classrooms now (-vs- a 1:1 laptop initiative--my Blackberry does quite a bit) and other technology sources . . . how does this all fit? (Another discussion for people to comment on.) Again, I think we have a number of staff who would and can embrace the new technology . . . but still some, who, while they like their laptop, would be happier with the old LC Macs note I m not a PC person, again because nothing would have to change. I could then really go on a soapbox of utilizing technology not as a stand alone skill, but rather as a way to make things easier . . . but I'll save it for another time. LOL As far as my classroom . . . projector, surround sound, Flips for everyone (how cool is that), use of cell phones, smartboard (I know what I just talked about . . . but in Utopia), ICN room type setting . . . reseach pods and people who are differentiating instruction and teaching 21st century skills. Ooo and unlimited network size. On Feb 4, 2009, at 4:00 PM, Sarah Freking wrote: I'd like to hear thoughts about smart boards. Who has them, which ones, and what do you think? Sarah M. The more and more that I watch people use the smart board idea, or the overlay in this case, the more and more I like the interactive wireless tablets. Maybe I am missing something with the flatscreens that can’t be solved with a super-bright projector. As far as the rest of the ideas, the only other thing that I would question would be the netbook over a full-powered notebook. Can a netbook keep up doing the pod/vodcasts or are there limitations?
