Chris. - Original Message - From: Esther mailto:mori...@mac.com To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, April 21, 2013 2:52 PM Subject: Use KeyRemap4MacBook to remap the insert key to Caps Lock [was Re: The insert key in VMware fusion] Hi Brandt, I know of only one way to remap the Caps Lock key to act as an insert key for modifier purposes under VMware fusion, and that is to use KeyRemap4MacBook and the PCKeyboardHack from: http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/ and http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/pckeyboardhack-usage.html.en The reason that you can't simply remap the function of the Caps Lock key to act as an insert key using Sharp Keys is that starting between the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008, slightly after the time that Leopard was released, Apple modified the action of the Caps Lock key to include a slight delay before its activation. Earlier models of the Intel MacBooks and MacBook Pros did not have this delay, but by 2009 all laptop Macs had the delay built in. This Apple Knowledge Base article gives details: • Mac notebooks: Caps Lock modified to reduce accidental activation http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1192 Paul Erkens details the fact that while you can remap the Caps Lock key in VMware Fusion, you can't use it as a modifier key, in his reply to a current thread, Re: Help with VMWare Fusion. The extra time delay that is introduced is the reason why. As to why this change was deliberately introduced, I believe that it was part of an accessibility solution for mobility disabled Mac users. This is only conjecture on my part based on having read some descriptions of accessibility standards for users with severe mobility impairments -- meaning quadraplegics and others who need to use mouth sticks to navigate keyboards, and use multiple presses of the Caps Lock for some sequences. If you're asking whether it is possible to use the Caps Lock key as an insert key for JAWS under VMware fusion, the answer is yes -- Eric Caron has a podcast and guide up at the AppleVis site that details how he has set up the Caps Lock key to act as the VO (Control+Option) keys on his Mac laptop, and to act as the JAWS insert key when he uses Windows under VMware fusion. You cannot, however, get this behavior by using either Sharp Keys, as you have found, or by using the VMware fusion preferences, as Paul described. In fact, if you use KeyRemap4MacBook, you should not be using either Sharp Keys or the VMware preferences remapping, because you will already have introduced multiple remappings for your keys. Here's the link to the AppleVis podcast page: • New Updated: Remapping the Keys on your Mac's Keyboard to Enhance the VoiceOver Experience: http://bit.ly/Qu1K2e I've shortened the actual link, which would probably wrap and break, but it's: http://www.applevis.com/podcast/episodes/new-updated-remapping-keys-your-mac s-keyboard-enhance-voiceover-experience There is also a user guide at: • Remapping the Keys on your Mac's Keyboard to Enhance the VoiceOver Experience http://bit.ly/Q6eTye However, while the user guide does provide useful documentation and references to the PCKeyboardHack page, it was written for the original podcast. It describes the general way of customizing the keyboard for the PCKeyboardHack, while Eric was only interested in getting a remapping for the Caps Lock key. The developer responded by introducing a custom setting for Blind Voice Over in the application that would take care of this. In addition, the most recent major update versions have incorporated this into app, so that it is no longer necessary to get the special version of the app to install that is referenced in the podcast. In fact, if you try to do so, you'll be taken back to the main KeyRemap4MacBook web page. Another change with the major update is that, instead of making the customization changes in preference panes for KeyRemap4MacBook and PCKeyboardHack under your System Preferences, you now work directly in these apps, instead. The AppleVis pages also contain a link to mac-access list post that provides more general information about working

Importing all music in to iTunes, what's the secret?
Okay, the subject line says it all. I have all my music in folders organized by artist, with each of their albums in folders with their name. Now I am using the mac for this task, and when I go to import, I go to the folder, open it, let all the rows of artist to be displayed, then click open. It says it is importing all of the music, but when I go to look for some music, under a artists name, there is clearly some albums missing. More than 2 or 3 also. So what is the trick, to make sure iTunes doesn't skip any of these albums? I have already tried Google, that's why I am here now. Another feature I like with vmware that is often overlooked, is copy and pasting between the 2 devices. With VMWare the windows disk drive is simulated through a big file on your hard drive and it grows only as large as the amount of stuff you store on windows. Re: The New AirPort Extreme.
To each there own. I am one of those who only backs up manually. so that probably means once every 2 months. I also have 2 8TB network attached storage devices, so I also back up the files and apps that are most important to me, along with googol drive, drop box, sky drive, as well as iCloud. So I know what you mean. Maybe I am just a storage freek since total including my time capsule, I have a total of 15TB of storage. and yes it all gets used one way or another. Then navigate inside the .vmwarevm file, anselect the .vmdk file as the virtual disk to use. There are lots of subfiles with the .vmdk extension, but you want the master .vmdk.d For example, there will be virtual a bunch of virtual disk 00x.vmdk subfiles. you want the one without the 00x's. Once the .vmdk is selected as the virtual disk to use, continue and fusion will create a virtual machine from that virtual disk. As the KB articles say, the process is identical to taking a disk drive out of one physical machine and putting it in another as the boot drive. Depending on what app you use to read books, there is a lot of free books on certain sites. Amazon has a kindle buffay, and a lot others. Re: optimizing windows VM in fusion
I use jaws and windows for the same thing, as I have to run my business from home. But I use 4 gigs of ram, and experience no choppyness. Remember, office from 2007 and above, needs at least 1 gig of ram to perform properly, and jaws another gig. So that may be where your choppyness is coming int. I have 16 gigs of ram, so have a lot more to use, but if all you use is office and a little IE, then moving it to 3 or 4 shouldn't be an issue. I understand your hesatation because of the authorization. Just tell them you had to install more ram for beter performance, they will give you another activation. Just don't tell them your running windows in fusion, cause then they will not help you. HTH! It's not true that you can't edit the thing although it does appear that way. When I went into the name field voice over didn't tell me that I was moving between insertion point at start or insertion point at the end. I tried this twice, and here is what I think I have figured out. Voice over is just not telling you what is what. It appears that if you double tap on the name field, that you end up automatically at insertion point at end. When I did it, voice over said insertion point at start every time, but that was not true all the time, I think. So for now, you can just assume that you're at the end and delete character by character. I could not get into the edit field where you could take out the whole thing if you wanted to without doing a character by character deletion. However, I was successful at editing the field although not normY like we're used to. The representative confirmed that there is no way to edit contacts while using Voice Over. First, he told me how to submit product feedback. Then he told me that he would check with the Engineering team to see if there is a work around. I followed these steps to submit this feedback and I would encourage everyone on the list to submit feedback as well. 1. I went to the Apple Product Feedback http://www.apple.com/feedback page. 2. Since I have an IPhone 4s, I accessed the IPhone link. 3. I wrote my comments. 4. I submitted the feedback. When submitting your feedback please specify that you are using IOS 7. I know that some of you on this list have been testing IOS 7. Did any of you catch this issue while testing and if so, did you report it. I want to be sure that apple responds to these issues during Beta testing. Please, if any of you elect to beta test IOS in the future, contacts should be one of the first things you check since it's of interest to everyone. You will also enter in an account description for example, Hotmail. Then hit next. You should then be on a screen that ask you to pick IMAP or pop. Select IMAP if its not already selected. On the same screen, enter in your correct e-mail address. For the incoming server you will enter imap-mail.outlook.com. For the outgoing server, you will type in smtp-mail.outlook.com. Although it says optional, I entered in my username, which is your correct e-mail and password. Hit next after all info has been entered, your device will validate, than double tap save. This means keyboard and mouse focus keep the All Signatures list selected so the signature you wish to drag is still visible and able to be dragged. I don't mean to go on at length but I think it's useful to understand these concepts as it's the same elsewhere in OS X, such as when dragging notes to different folders in Notes. I’d prefer the old behaviour, where I heard how big the conversation was at the very beginning. And finally, I used to get from my message list to the email i wanted to read by pressing VO+J. The message would immediately start to read. Now it seems a first press of VO+J does nothing at all, and to do the same thing that once took 1 press of VO+J now takes three. I think this latter one is a bug. I’ve really enjoyed using Mail in Mountain Lion but if I can’t get the chatty behaviour under control, will run Outlook in a VM. Thanks for any thoughts. RE: Gmail Issues in Mavericks, Pretty Major, Folks
Well, the old saying goes, you get what you pay for And since mavericks was free, I am sure they probably didn't make the same effort as in the past to make sure everything worked. As for moving your messages, if you have both iCloud and gmail accounts in apple mail, just select the messages you want to move, and then do vo shift m and pick the icloud mailbox where you want them to go. Icloud will sink it just fine. I dumped gmail for an email client, but still use them for google drive since that is 25GB of free space. I'm not generally one to cut Apple or any other big company much slack when it comes to buggy software releases. But in this case, the article that somebody posted a few days ago about this Gmail problem indicates that the real problem is with Gmail, because it does not do things in the standard manner. Apple made an attempt to improve how it works with this nonstandard implementation by Gmail, and it's not working out so well. What I wonder is if there is any way to move a whole lot of messages that I have stored in Gmail to another provider, such as Apple. I do have an iCloud email account, and it works quite well. Now that I have mountain lion and have access to my iCloud mail on the Mac as well as the iPhone and iPad, I would be perfectly happy to dump Gmail. It is a pain on the web, so good riddance. But I do have a great lot of messages stored in various folders there, and moving all that over would be a major pain I fear. A note to outlook.com users
Okay, some of you may have seen my post a couple weeks back, that Microsoft now supports imap in mac mail. The instructions cover mountain lion only. I anisially upgraded from mountain lion, but wanted to see if a clean install provided any differences. For me it did. My outlook configuration in apple mail being one of them. In the past when you put in a Microsoft account in apple mail, it always defaulted to pop3, now when you do it, it tells you that you must configure it manually. But upon telling you that, all the right settings are filled in for you. So just a heads up for anyone who is using or planning on using outlook.com mail with apple mail in mavericks. I faught with this for almost 2 hours before trying to do it the normal way. Just goes to show you how much things can change. I learned the hard way. But hey, my dad always told me, there is no better teacher than experience! Network Attached storage for sale?
Please reply off list. Okay, I have 2 8TB network attached storage devices. For those of you who don’t know what this is, it’s a hard drive that is powered by an AC adaptor, and plugs directly in to your router. That way all computers, and most smart phones, can access the files as long as they are on the same network. I am selling both of them. One is loaded with my movie and music collection, that I have no problem leaving on there for whom ever may buy it. The second one is still in the box unopened. A terabyte is basically 8 times 1000 gigabytes. So just imagine a very large amount of space to save and backup files. These are 600 bucks brand new, but I am willing to knock something off both of them depending on whether you want the new one or the one that is barely 6 months old with the movies and music loaded onto it already. I know some people don’t like western digital drives, but I have had nothing but good experiences with them. And that’s who these drives are made by. They even make a streaming media player that works with these devices, to stream media to any television or computer in your home on the same network. My contact info is below for all who is interested, and if not, pass along to anyone you think may be interested. Thanks. Re: Ongoing Fusion Problems
Well, to start with, if you have 8 gigs of ram, you need at least 3 possibley 4 gigs for windows. Don’t worry, its not going to affect the performance of your mac. Secondly, running your vm through bootcamp, then coming in to fusion may be your other issue. I have heard a lot of people complain that running there vm through bootcamp, then importing it in to fusion has been very problematic at best. Especially those who use jaws, there activation gets stripped out, and they are stuck in 40 minute mode. Since fs isn’t going to just hand out authorizations because your trying to run windows on a mac. If you have any more issues, my contact info is below. However, my Mini is still almost unusable when a vm starts, at least this vm (which is running off my Bootcamp partition). Even trying to go to the Window Menu to switch focus to the active VM is an exercise in patience and anger management. I can switch to other apps, but Voiceover's speech is stuttery and broken, and apps take a long time to come up (not launch, just come to the foreground). I have a total of 8gb of ram, and Windows only has 1, plus a single core. My macbook Air, with half the ram, performs dramatically better. I am starting to think it is a mavericks issue, since the entire system has been slow to launch apps and perform other tasks ever since the installation. I don't know, though. Re: focusing in Windows using Fusion?
I don't know about anyone else. But I RARELY use windows and the mac side at the same time. I have windows running yes, but I don't have to do things on them at the same time. So when I am using windows, I turn voice over off. This has been working for me since fusion 4, and windows focuss's just fine. When I am done, I turn voice over back on, go back to the mac side, and everything works as normal. Re: Dragging and dropping a Mailbox to Favorites yet again
Well, in mavericks this has changed. The drag and drop feature, for mailboxes, at least for me hasn’t worked since I upgraded. What has worked, is the mouse down and up command. So mouse down on the mailbox you want to add to favorites, this is command, option, control, and shift plus the spacebar all at the same time. When you get the mailbox where you want it, then do the same thing to do the mouse up command. This has worked for me on both my macs so I know it works. HTH. Re: Considerations for a Clean Install…
1. if you purchased apps in the Mac App Store, then you have nothing to worry about, you can just redownload them when your restore is finished. 2. If you have 3rd party apps, save your activations and most recent version of them on a usb hard or thumb drive. 3. as for your iTunes library. You should save it to an external hard drive. That way you can copy the content back to your mac once the clean install is done. Hope this helps. Download mavericks and do it with disk maker x version 3.4 -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Bill Holton Sent: Saturday, March 01, 2014 2:36 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: clean install with disc maker x? Hi. I am still having major issues creating a Mavericks startup disk. I have tried Disk X both with an 8 gig stick and an 80 gig usb drive. I have both formatted to Mac OS Extended, journaling. I have tried them one at a time. Both are named untitled Using Disk X I wind up with a no windows screen. I caught these terminal commands to create a startup disk. sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction When I paste these lines into the terminal and press enter, I do get prompted for my system password, but after entering it the terminal merely repeats the commands with a brief description of what each command does. I must be missing something here. Any suggestions much appreciated. Ih have also tried this with both the stick and the USB drive. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Kliphton --- Sent: Friday, February 28, 2014 6:08 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: clean install with disc maker x? I am happy to report, that making a bootible drive with disc maker X version 3.4 waas successful. Steps I used to perform this. 1. Downloaded disc maker x version 3.4 2. Downloaded mavericks 10.92 and exited before it installed so it would place the installer in my applications folder. 3. eraced and formatted my 8GB thumb drive, left it as untitled, and macintosh journaled. 4. ran disc maker x. note, when doing this it will first ask you what version of lion are you trying to create a bootible drive for. Lion, mountain lion, or mavericks. I chose mavericks. Next it will tell you what versions of lion or mavircks it found on your system. Then it will ask you are you sure, ask for your admin password, and then do its thing. It will first say disc maker has no windows, that will go on for about 1 minut or so. Then disc maker will continue to say busy for about 10 to 12 minutes. It will then tell you that it is completing copying final files, and in about another 2 minutes, your bootible thumb drive of mavericks is complete. These are the steps I did, don't know if anyone else will have to change something, but this is what worked for me. Re: moving windows favorites to the mac
There is a much simpler solution for this. On windows, you have the folder with the name of your computer. So mine says Kliphton. In this folder you have downloads, documents, an yes favorites. This is where your favorites folder can be copied from. Just enter the folder that has the name of your computer, find the favorites, control c to copy the folder, and then save it on your USB thumb drive or external drive which ever one you are using. This works, I have been doing it for almost 4 years. I have just gotten a MBP, but before that I was using a MacMini, and then a iMac. I still have to use windows for my business, so copying my favorites over was one of the thins I had to learn. This is how I have done it in the past: 1. On the PC, open the run dialog box with the Windows key and the letter R. 2. Type favorites in the edit box and press enter. 3. The favorites list will now be displayed. 4. Select all of the bookmarks in the usual manner. This can either be by control-A (select all) or by holding down the control and use the arrow keys, find the favorite and press the spacebar to highlight it. 5. Press control-C to copy. 6. probably the easiest way to transfer is to place the IE favorites selected on to a thumb drive and then insert it into an USB port on your Mac machine.
