Subject: [MOPO] Our 17th Birthday!

I can’t let the day pass without mentioning another MoPo milestone…. Birthday
Number 17!

On February 24, 1995 the first MoPo post was distributed via American
University’s listserv. For a few weeks prior to that date, the original MoPo
members simply cc’d their e-mail messages to the other 11 people in the group.
In keeping with my annual tradition, I’d like to recognize those 11:

Mahtab Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh Kai Shen, Evan
Zweifel, George Nichol, Cynthia Nemeth-Johannes, Adam Ehrlich, myself (your
humble listowner) and AOL’er Static555—who for the first time I can finally
identify as Jeff Static. For years I was unsure of Static555’s real name, but
by digging through the early MoPo archives I finally stumbled upon his true
identity. Michael, Rob and Evan are still members.

Thanks to you all for keeping MoPo alive these 17 years even in the face of a
lot of competition from those more graphically-enhanced discussion boards. Also
a big thanks to American University for the use of their ever-reliable listserv
system, a dinosaur that they continue to support. And thanks to the original 11
who got MoPo off to a fine start way back in 1995.

Re: [MOPO] the cheapest poster you own AND TRULY ENJOY?

2010-04-25 Thread pj Angel
For me, it is the Amsel-drawn images to The Big Sleep (1978). All sizes use
the same image.

Of all the sizes the HS has been my favorite.

http://www.emovieposter.com/imagearchive/poster/73193.html

Certainly not-so-rare. And the insert, as far as I know, is not a
Minty-White victim.

Not sure if they are undervalued, though. The 2006 Bruce auction above
with $23.49 for a rolled HS seems like a fair price, even four years later
in today's market.

Okay, maybe a touch undervalued.

I’m not starting this message with “Hi Diane” as we normally begin emails, but,
if I may, I would like to start with:

Dear Diane,

I am a relative newbie to our hobby….I do not sell movie posters or lobby cards
but try to limit my collecting to western posters and title lobbies.

I started with posters from the 30’s of my heroes….Buck Jones (Ivory Handled
Gun), Tim McCoy (Outlaw’s Paradise ) and Ken Maynard (The Unknown Cavalier
insert from the 20’s) but found myself with a lack of wall space and my wife
did not initially appreciate the art they represent.  OK so I had to turn to
lobbies and had to curtail my purchases to title cards because there are so
many….I converted my basement into the “Ranch” and surround myself with my
heroes and also got Tom Mix, Rex Bell, Bob Custer, Bob Steele, Hoot Gibson...In
other words I really opened my walls to all my favorite cowboys.  I really
never bought any Horror posters or lobby cards.

OK, that’s me….but Diane (Studio C) THANK YOU so much for your efforts and
information.  You have done the hobby an extremely big service.  Without your
and the other people’s efforts we (the collectors) would not have any inkling
as to the goings on behind the scenes.

You deserve to be given the highest accolades and please, please do not pay any
attention to members like buymovieposters.com who do not appreciate the service
you have done.

I for one have the utmost respect and admiration for you and Studio C.

PS FYI, I bought the Buck Jones ‘Ivory Handled Gun’ poster several years ago
from Bruce when he was on eBay.  I paid almost $1,600 for it.  It was linen
backed and looks superb.  In Bruce’s description he noted that the linen
backing was done “almost surely Igor Edelman”.  I was concerned about its
authenticity and wrote to Bruce who assured me that it was an original.

Again, Diane, thank you so much for all your efforts and please ignore anyone
who criticizes you.  I shake my head with disgust that they can even do so.

My Best,

Jeffrey

Re: [MOPO] CASABLANCA half sheet-no feedback ever posted

2009-10-23 Thread pj angel

I had to look that up.

Patina (pronounced /ˈpætənə/ or /pəˈtiːnə/) is a film on the surface of bronze
or similar metals (produced by oxidation over a long period); a sheen on wooden
furniture produced by age, wear, and polishing; or any such acquired change of
a surface through age and exposure. On metal, patina is a coating of various
chemical compounds such as oxides or carbonates formed on the surface during
exposure to the elements (weathering). Patina also refers to accumulated
changes in surface texture and colour that result from normal use of an object
such as a coin or a piece of furniture over time.

It could be the seller is referring to the tape stain residue on the left
border that have a bronze-like "patina". Yes. That's it.

yes it was CSI

the murderer killed the toy dealer who sold the submarines because he and his
best friend - who was the girl next door - tried to use the sub and she
drowned, setting the killer onto a life of vengenace... and the pursuit of
another sub.. I think he hijacked the Red October later in life

I really wanted those Civil War soldiers as a kid but there was one ad in the
comic books that really always caught my eye and imagination.  I always wanted
to get the Submarine that was big enough for 2 with a cost of $9.99.  Hindsight
I am sure it was just cardboard but I would sure love to see some of the items
that I dreamt about when read my comic books.  You also had the 3 full sets of
fishing gear including tackle boxes, rods/reels and a gazzillion accessories
for $12.95.  I would have had to sell a million issues of Grit (also a comic
ad) to get that.  Wow.  you guys really have that mental way-back machine
running on full speed for me (and I love it).

Did any of you who were old enough to ever buy those "100 Civil War soldiers
for $1" that were advertised on the back of DC Comics in the late 1950s? I kept
begging my parents to get them, and my dad said they were sure to be total
junk, but I knew better, and we ordered them, and they came and they were like
each the size of my thumbnail, and they couldn't even stand, and there WERE
total junk.

Not like those X-Ray Specs, which let me see inside my hand!

blobs of flaming plastic goo when hit with any kind of heat ray, I do agree
with Rich's overall analysis: As in the 1950's sci-fi movies, in the end the
Army was victorious -- the monsters did get the worst of it (witness that today
you can still buy the tiny soldiers new but not the monsters... unless you call
those little overpriced Star Wars freakazoids real monsters. :)

Re: [MOPO] Leaving Bad Feedback

2008-07-17 Thread pj Angel
And you Michael, how often have *you* ACTUALLY left negative feedback and
the reasons.

Just curious.

Me, I left only a couple of negs since 1998 for reasons of which I no longer
recall.

That's not to say I haven't been disappointed, or misled, buy an item
received, but have always been able to communicate with the seller to
resolve the transaction with either money returned, an replacement item, or
(in one case) credit on future auctions. That's happened a dozen or so
times.

And as a seller I found the best way to retain good relationships, and a
solid customer base, was to let the buyer keep the item they were
disappointed with and return all the money, including shipping. No questions
asked. That happened maybe 5 times over the years. It was amazing that after
I gave them that option, the item in question was no longer quite so
disappointing.

[MOPO] Advances for DTESS (2008)

2008-07-24 Thread pj Angel
MoPo,

Found online tonight.

http://iconsoffright.com/news/2008/07/2_posters_from_the_day_the_ear.html

Certainly like the Gort advance better than the *Sphere*-Like image of the
first one.

The trailer looks kinda cool, too.

Still... what can you say?

Like em or not, you can't stop the sequels.

Hi MoPo,

Just want to give thanks to Dave for a couple fantastic off-eBay
transactions. I purchased both from his excellent web site and had Dave send
one of the items directly to Dario (which D did) for backing (which D's
working on) and the other just arrived here, in the US, today.
Nicely packaged, I might add.

Many thanks there DR! Keep up the great work!

Re: [MOPO] OFF TOPIC: IKE

2008-09-11 Thread pj angel
Kirby,

I was working the weather radar at Bergstrom AFB in Austin when Hurricane
Allen hit the Texas coast in 1980. I'll never forget the one tornado that
created so much damage. But there were dozens of smaller ones.

Your concerns for tornadoes are well founded.

Good news is that Ike, while strong, is no Allen.

  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Allen

He was a bastard, for sure. From the Wiki article:

In Texas, the storm surge was reported as high as 12 feet (3.7 m) at Port
Mansfield, though it may have been higher because the highest surges occurred
in unpopulated and unmonitored sections of the Texas coast. A peak wind gust of
129 mph (208 km/h) was also measured at Port Mansfield. The storm caused 7
deaths in Texas and 17 in Louisiana (most resulting from the crash of a
helicopter evacuating workers from an offshore platform). Allen spawned several
tornadoes in Texas. One tornado caused $100 million in damage when it hit
Austin, Texas, making it the costliest tropical cyclone-spawned tornado in
recorded history. Overall, however, the storm caused limited damage in the
United States due to its suddenly diminished power and because its highest
tides and winds hit a sparsely-populated portion of the Texas coast.[1]

One bit of good news resulted from Allen's arrival -- it dumped 10 to 20
inches (510 mm) of rain in south Texas, ending a summer-long drought during the
Heat Wave of 1980.

Latest NWS forecast has it hitting south of Galveston, as a mid-range Cat 3
(93-113 knots).

  Y'all take care.

Here in Texas we are casting a wary eye on Hurricane Ike.
It looks as if we are going to catch it this time. There may be
some of you who are thinking that it's about time. But that's
  another story.

Anyway, Austin is about 200 - 250 miles inland from where this
storm is supposed to make landfall. The problem is that is bigger
than a lot of states - about 300 miles across and has two more days to
churn itself into fury over the Gulf of Mexico.

My cousin (who actually collects film posters, by the way) works
for Kirby Corporation in Houston (no connection to yours truly) in the inland
marine business, and I can tell you that the people who are very
familiar with hurricanes are worried as hell.

Here in Austin we expect this to be downgraded to perhaps a
tropical storm by the time it gets here. Still it could spin
off some tornados and we could lose power. If I get a tornado
there could be movie posters all over East Austin.

If I see Elmira Gulch riding by on her bike (or Lance Armstrong)
  I'll let you know.

  Ya'll pray now!

We get some complaints from people who say we "over-pack", and that we should
just use one piece of cardboard on each side and put that in a plain envelope!

On the other hand, we often read on forums like these about people who get
posters packed like this and arrive mangled.

We sell all over the world, and many of our packages travel huge distances and
get mislaid along the way, so we try to truly use "gorilla-proof" packaging.

Here is a case where it really paid off:

A customer from France contacted us that his package had gone missing. We
replied that it almost surely would turn up before too long, because in most
such cases the items are tied up in customs.

He just e-mailed to tell us the package arrived. Here is what he said:

"Somehow, somewhere in transit, the parcel must have gotten drenched in water
or something. The parcel and inner cartons were visibly damaged but thanks to
the meticulous packing you do, none of the posters got damaged. Once again I am
more than satisfied with your overall service and I look forward to buy more
and more stuff from your auctions!"

Of course the Postal Service provided him with no explanation of what occurred
(perhaps it fell out of the airplane on the way over and was fished out of the
ocean?), and no apology for drenching the package!

"Hello Shoppers! Fresh bread is available in the bakery on sale two for 99 cents. Pick up a couple of loaves for dinner. We also have a sale on 24-Sheets to BARBARELLA with Jane Fonda. Buy one and get a second at half price. Decorate a house or and entire apartment complex! Aisle 7: Cutlery, Vacuum Cleaners, and Movie Posters. The prices are always dropping at Wal-Mart. Thank you!"

When I got to Aisle 7 they were gone. Some toad-faced slob in pink stretch pants with a  sprayed-on lacquered beehive and two screaming brats in the cart grabbed the last two. That's so typical.

Maybe THIS IS THE TIME, to SAY GOODBYE to EBAY. We are such a small hobby, lets move to JR. Or lets move 50% of your EBAY offerings to Movie Poster Bid for a test run. Every beginning is challenging. We are talking about big ASS EBAY. I guess, everyone is sort of afraid of EBAY. I think EBAY will go up to 10% shortly. Why not? If I would be EBAY, I would do it. No competition. EBAY is smart, they go small in short periods. I guess I would also do the same. Welcome.

This is my first post after a very nasty computer virus melted my home pc hard drive, corrupted all my backup disks, and destroyed about 6 years of hard work. Not only was I affected, but Dario, and especially DrV, were hard hit as I lost their sites of which I was webmaster. Dario bounced back nicely on his own (looks great, D!), but DrV lost years of online articles. That is my biggest regret of this entire unpleasant experience. I'll make it up to him one day, somehow.

I am using pc at work now until such time I feel like readdressing the home pc issue. As such, the work pc is a Government-owned computer, and in an effort to make every 8 hours work an even more miserable experience, most of the fun web sites have been blocked. Like eBay. No longer can I access the site directly, nor can I access the eBay links you provide. It's quite possible that I am the only MoPo member unable to go to the very site we all talk about.

At the moment I am not too terriblely upset with this developement. I do miss not being able to access my eBay ID(s) and just looking around over there. But, Tel est la Vie. I'll cope.

So, for the time being, it appears I will be relying on mailing lists, MCW, Heritage Auctions, direct MoPo sales, your web sites, friends bidding my behalf, etc. If you have a mailing list please add [EMAIL PROTECTED] to it. If you have a web site to share, please provide a link.

Re: [MOPO] >>>>> the BACK of the poster

2005-07-13 Thread pj angel

MB,

Most sellers I've dealt with don't even mention the condition of the back. It's hard enough dealing with the front. I don't consider back conditions much either when selling, or buying.

I've purchased from Deke and Bruce and Fred and Hazelton and...etc, etc, etc and received items with stuff written on the back never mentioned by these reputable sellers. It probably never occured to them to bring it up. It never bothered me. I have never looked at a poster and wondered what the back side is like.

...So, if you see a poster with substantial, substantial, substantial writing on the back AND IT DOES NOT BLEED THROUGH, would you buy it ???...

Sure. I would. But if it really bothered me I'd give it to Dario to linenback and restore.

Good question, btw.

Re: [MOPO] Mail Delivery Problems UPDATE

2005-07-20 Thread pj angel

Hi Phil, DKinSD,

All,

I've add the following statement to all MoviePosterBid.Com auctions:

eMails to AOL accounts are bouncing back or D.O.A. If you have an AOL email address you must PayPal within 24 hours of auction ending on your own and notify me of payment intent (paypal or that you are mailing payment) at email [EMAIL PROTECTED]. Please take it upon yourself to do so. I am not ignoring you. You have a major problem with your AOL account. If I do not hear from you within 24 hours of auction ending, the auction is null and void. pja

However, I'm thinking about shortening the statement a bit to read:

If you use AOL please do not bid.

Re: [MOPO] Shill or Real

2006-07-17 Thread PJ Angel
Yikes! The shat just hit the fan.

I might point out that one of eMovieposter.com's brillant promotions for
auctions is if one bids on, like, 200 auctions (the number changes) and wins,
the bidder gets a complete set of BH poster books.

jonesdog4, being real and all, may be trying for a set of BH books. God knows
he/she has spent enough to purchase 100 sets, it seems, with just a quick
glance of the bidding history.

eMovieposter.com has always attracted bidders like this. Bidders that other
sellers (p.j.angel, for one) only wish they had.

[MOPO] How to PROMOTE MPB on your "About Me" eBay Page

2006-07-26 Thread pj angel
thus:     http://members.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=p.j.angel     It would be cool if others mentioned MPB on their "About Me" page, too.     Like most eBay store owners on this forum (mine is a whole 2 months old) mulling over the sting of yet another eBay betrayal and trying to decide to jump ship or not, Rich and I had an eMail exchange concerning keeping a store front on both eBay and MPB. Using eBay to drive more poster collectors over to MPB. We both seem to agree that having storefronts on both might be beneficial. Thus, the new "About Me" page re-do. Right now I'll continue the eBay Store while planning the opening of Big Town Branch #2 on MPB. As long as I can afford eBay's, I'll keep it.      Why am I not just bailing
eBay? Is any MoPo Storefronter bailing because of the latest betrayal? I'd like to hear about it. My problem with bailing right now (and others may agree with me here) is I'm doing pretty darn well as a eBay storekeeper. People are actually visiting my store and purchasing my items. Yes, I'm selling stuff without going through the eBay "core" auction format. Wherein lies the whole problem for eBay. Too bad for them. They created this monster, they must learn to co-exist.But they won't. They can't. They don't know how. eBay will end up killing mine and other's stores eventually, but for now I'll stick with the worse landlord since Snidely K. Whiplash.      MPB Special Event is alot of fun thus far. TONS of great stuff. I wasn't part of the "EVENT" initially, but I know a good thing when I see it and I can be good at band wagon jumping, so with Rich's sufferance, (Thanks Rich. Party On!) I listed 20+
items that sorta fit in to the theme and aura of the thing, all closing Sunday evening when all the other great stuff closes.     http://www.movieposterbid.com/search.asp?nsearch=bigtownfilmposters.us     Speaking of "aura"...      WTB...     THE AURA (aka El Aura) and STREELIGHT (2007).     Thanks to Fred for the MPB text on my About Me page. I could of written my own text, but hell, why mess with perfection?     cheers     pjAngel

Re: [MOPO] Question About EBAY Store and Tony Blair!

2006-07-28 Thread pj angel
Channing,     I tried this yesterday with ten fixed-price items that were going to end within 24 hours.      I wanted to change the "List until Cancel" (where your item is automatically relisted every 30 days) to simply "List for 30 days" where when it's over, it's over, without automatic renewal.      No way to change the duration. I only ended the 10 items I was experimenting with and lost my fees. They currently sit within my "Items Not Sold" file.     It appears to me that eBay has all the angles figured out. I was just trying to change the duration of my 10 items and the only way to do it was to completely cancel/end the auction(s) and start over, thus losing the initial listing fees. If I want to relist them, well, guess what? New fees back into eBay coffers. I just paid them
double.     This isn't exactly what you are suggesting, I know. But, eBay has it all figured out.     Those sellers using the "List Until Cancel" option (as I do) on their items have themselves in a corner and will not be able to change the duration unless they complete END the auctions and start over.     If anyone knows otherwise, please let me/us know.     Say HI to Tony for me.      pjchanninglylethomson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: First off -- I was wondering if any of the MOPO members have decided to list their store items for thirty days without doing the automatic renewal. It seems to me this might be a way to avoid some of the increased store fees. In other words,
list the item for a thirty day period, then re-list them just before the data falls off EBAY some 60 days after the termination of the listing. Just an idea, any thoughts? Problems with this idea?Second -- Tony Blair of the UK is visiting San Francisco tomorrow. [MOPO] STOP! MPB Results

2006-07-31 Thread pj angel
EXCELLENT Q, Toochis.      Why do all I hear is crickets? If only we could get half the replies to your questions that Mel Talk generated today.     Rich, I hope, will come in with the final figures, but it looks like 30K total, or so. Wow. That's a bunch. Abe, John Reid, and Rich all three carried the thing, but I jumped on board and ended up selling a few items, too. Thanks to the three of them for allowing me to "crash" the event. They could of raised a stink, I guess, had they felt "threatened". (LOL! Threatened by ME! Har! That will be the day...)     Too bad many of the reserves were not realized. Lessons learned, perhaps, for the next event auction? Keep the reserves (if you're gonna have them) reasonable. I don't suggest giving posters away, but $65 for a Sarong Girl should had been enough, I would think.      I won a couple of things, too: Murder Is My Business LCS and the OS to DULCY with Ann Sothern (love her).     Anyone else score something on MPB? Have anything to say about movie posters?     I do. What the hell was the reserve on that JOSETTE one sheet? was a wistful one about how the recent picture of Bardot affected his own boyhood image of her... nothing to do about her politics what so ever, but in the charged atmosphere following the Gibson/Bush flare-up, others immediately started misinterpreting and responding to his innocent comment with politically-correct outrage. Those who posted flames against Rich with that knee-jerk reaction need to mellow out a bit on their own politically-correct ax grinding and pause to think about what someone is actually saying before jumping on them for something they didn't mean and didn't say. Why not take this Bardot-bashing over to one of those "other forums" that people who only post off-topic rants are always raving about being so wonderful, where it might interest someone? I'll mention are remakes of 3:10 To Yuma (once with T. Cruise attached) now lists Russell Crowe and Christian Bale as the leads (Cool! I'm there.); The Creature From The Black Lagoon with director Breck Eisner helming (who did okay directing Sahara imho); I Am Legend now with Will Smith (Arnold was once attached); a new Fletch flick; John Singleton's Luke Cage; live-action Journey to
the Center of the Earth with Brendan Fraser; John Woo's Spy Hunter (I like John Woo, including Paycheck. This is my problem and I'll deal with it); Westworld remake (no cast yet); a redo of DAY OF THE DEAD (Huh? Didn't they just "re-do" that one? A Re-Re-Do perhaps?) and a another go (3rd, I think) for The Incredible Shrinking Man starring...wait for it...Eddie Murphy. Good Lord!     No matter how you feel about remakes and sequels you'll find the page loaded with fun information. Re: [MOPO] Are MoPo sellers accepting eBay's massive price rise?

2006-08-22 Thread pj angel
Hi Bruce, MoPo,     I closed mine in a symbolic knee-jerk protest after the fee increase was announced last month.      For about 4 hours. Then re-opened it after a re-think.      As I stated in a previous MoPo post, my eBay Store, then and now, is it's doing well.  It's a small store with only 300+ items. It continues to perform and I'm selling fixed-priced items at a pace I can live with and profit by. I run a 10-20 item "core" auction once a month and apparently those auction items get the customers to visit my store. And they buy stuff and come back. Even without the "core" auctions items sell.       Of course, I hate the fact that eBay is charging all that money for the "privilege" of a store front, then add on closing fees, then tack on PayPal fees, then... whatever's next
fees, yet I don't have another outlet that works quite as well as this eBay Store. A quandry, to be sure.     I'll keep my store, for now, because it remains active and profitable even after paying the mutiple fees. I certainly understand those folding and I reserve the right to change my mind at any time.     I'm very interested to hear other's thoughts on this topic.     pjAngel http://stores.ebay.com/big-town-film-posters Bruce Hershenson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: I closed one of my two eBay stores the day eBay announced their insane gouging price increases, and have just listed the items in my other store for the FINAL time (on the last day of the old

Re: [MOPO] Sellers NOT volunteering to send out Join MOPO flyers!

2006-09-08 Thread pj angel
JR,     Are you serious about contributing to a "MOPO flyer printing fund"?     I could use a printer.     pjJR <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Ron and Phil,Well, yeah, if someone is only selling to MOPO members with genuine FS-type posts... and not selling to other movie poster collectors through other venues like an auction site or a retail web site, then naturally there would be no point in sending "join MOPO" flyers out with those shipments if the only people you were ever shipping to were already MOPO members. As for Phil being bewildered about this idea of sending out flyers... what, haven't you been paying attention, Phil? Bruce sent this list an out-of-the-blue question last week wondering about "Is membership in MOPO declining?"
Now, he was either being snide or genuinely concerned. Let's assume the later, as most people did, which lead to quite a few people expressing concern about the fact that we're down from a high of about 500 members a year ago to about 400 now. It was pointed out that sellers who regularly list their items for sale on this list are the ones with "the most to lose" from a declining membership. It was then suggested that rather than fiddle with the MOPO format... or require people to post in order to maintain membership (a real bad idea)... that the best thing would be to have a membership drive and the most effective way to bring in some new members would be for the sellers to send out "join MOPO" flyers with every poster they ship. To me, this seems like one of those really good ideas that is a no-brainer and while there is certainly no official requirement that sellers do this, it seems like a good thing to do. But we both know that as a group, sellers are a
quiescent, status-quo bunch, and that if nobody pushes them, this will end up being just another good idea that never gets implemented. So I'm doing a bit of pushing for the idea to see if we can't get most of the sellers who regularly advertise their wares on MOPO to give back a little and do this easy, simple, cheap thing to bring in some new members. But, in my usual curmudgeonly fashion, I couldn't help commenting that while this was a great idea, that I doubted many of the sellers who regularly post FA messages to MOPO would bother. So far they have proven me correct, with only a couple of sellers publicly stating they will include flyers in their shipments. I'm keeping a list of those who continue to advertise here won't publicly commit to tucking a flyer into their packages simply as means of keeping track -- so I can eventually provide the inquiring minds of the public with a statistical analysis (one that names names merely in the interests of accuracy,
you understand) which will prove my original contention -- that lots of sellers are perfectly willing to use this list to advertise on, but most of them can't be bothered to even do something this simple and easy to improve it.I can be proven wrong in this contention very easily. I doubt that I will be, however.Personally, I don't think the number of members on MOPO matters at all -- but if the sellers are concerned about "declining membership" then there is something simple the sellers can do about it.-- JR- Original Message - From: "Phil Edwards Cinemarts" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>To: Sent: Friday, September 08, 2006 4:26Subject: Re: [MOPO] Sellers NOT volunteering to send out Join MOPO flyers!> Ron - I think posting direct FS to MOPO is a good idea, nothing wrong > with it at all.> So long as posts are labeled as Scott has requested as FA, FS, etc, then

Craig,     Walter is 100% correct. Your eBay Identity has been compromised.     This happened to me last year. I opened my account to see I was selling a John Deere Tractor and a rather large and equally expensive snow mobile. The fees associated with these two items were well north of $400.     There is a number on ebay...somewhere. A 1-800 number. After searching I did find it and talked to a LIVE person. They took my number and called me back (as proof as who I was) and over the phone they cancelled the auctions and reset my password. It took about 15 mintues.     It took 45 minutes to an HOUR find the number, though. I'm at work and eBay is blocked here or I'd go there now and help you. Billions of $$ a year and this still goes on at eBay... *sheesh*       At least they got that pesky eBay RADIO going. We'd all hate to see
that compromised and not running.      Luck! Re: [MOPO] Best Poster Fiend? publicly asking JR to calm down

2006-09-20 Thread pj angel
Frankly, I really enjoy talking or engaging in friendly debate with you, but it's time to let this go. Susan shouldn't be in some sort of "cooler" and you shouldn't be reading archives instead of e-mails. You've only hurt yourselves with these unnecessary "punishments."     I don't see a long lasting olive branch between the two of you. But I do see two people that know a lot about movies and posters and I want both to post and to make others feel welcome. Is that too much to wish for? Ron     I hope you read that JR. His name isn't Wis(e)berg for nothing.     Have you had time to calm down and realized why EXACTLY there were no sides taken publically here between you and Susan? By the time I had my retort ready to fly Scott came out and quelled any
notion of the flame expanding anymore than it had. Scott said that matters were handled privately and to "move on", as I think he stated it. I deleted my "contribution" to the skirmish after that and elected to see what would happen. I didn't think you'd get all freaky and serious-like threaten to leave the group!     Pretty wise guy, that Moderator of ours. He wasn't going to allow Mo Po to relive another "low point of Mo Po's existence" as he himself tagged it a few years ago. Can anyone blame him? Back then I bet his finger was "on the button" to end the MoPo forum once and for all. It was MoPo's Bay of Pigs.      Had Scott not stepped in when he did I'm sure there would of been dozens of public Pro-JR posts of "Gather pitchforks and torches, Mopers! STORM! STORM THE OLSENSTEIN CASTLE!! KILL THE SHE-BEAST!" with dozens of equally passionate
"Susan For President! JR SHOULD BE NEUTERED! SLOWLY!" retorts from the other side. Back and forth. Back and Forth. Until what? We all turned to butter, perhaps?     It would have been entertaining as hell, but got us, as a group, no where.       So. Susan is back on MoPo. Let's deal with it. Welcome her with open arms. Hurricane Susan, whose sustained winds and storm surge could flatten Miami. Prepare for it. Read the warning flags, stock up, and be prepared to evacuate. Those are the steps you take. You don't leave the country, dude.     Susan is right at home at Style B and NS4GE, especially when she's with the other "wimmin'" over there. Things can be pretty entertaining (and nasty), for sure. Over there Susan is like watching DEADWOOD with six-pack and a few rowdy friends. But when she starts dropping F Bombs on MoPo it doesn't seem right. It's
like watching DEADWOOD with your Mother and Dad in the room. There are some things you just dont say with parents around. For instance, "Hey C**ksu**er, Pass the F***ing chips!"  would qualify as something one would not say with a parents in the room, but something that could accidently slip out while watching DEADWOOD.      Susan can make Al Swearengen blush. If she wants to. She's our Calamity Jane. That's a compliment, btw. A Point of Pride for her and for us. And it appears she's trying hard to "be at home" and playing nice-nice on MoPo, too. I like that.      I'm surprised you haven't recognized the BEST POSTER FIND thread for what it is: a positive step forward. I'll say that again, this time in bold with italics, and underlined: a positive step forward. As ON TOPIC as MoPo can get. It's why MoPo
was invented, for these types of involving threads between poster collectors. It's an attempt to move on, and QUICKLY, to better things. And it's working. Who ever started it was/is genius.     So, JR. What do you say? Co-exist with all of us. You make MoPo a better place. Disregard those flippant lurkers who have never, and will never, contribute to MoPo and this hobby like you have.      Man, you're the guy who created and made MPB WORK, for crying out loud! We all owe you for that. Go read Rich's latest post in your behalf. It was great. It embarassed somebody, for sure.     You're The Poster Curmudgeon, you know.       So, JR. What do you say? Tell us all about your BEST POSTER FIND.     pj     Ron Wisberg

As MOPO's only meteorologist by trade (that has admitted to be so, anyway) I find JR's comment concerning "deflector girds disintegrating" weather phenomena quite amusing. Amusing because there are those out there that believe the Gov capable of such incredible science fiction as manipulating the weather to suit political and financial needs.

Case in point...

www.weatherwars.info

A site run by Pocatello, Idaho's own local "TV Weatherman" Scott Stevens (are we proud, or what?) and frequent guest of Art Bell, night radio's paranoid propagandist.

Yes, I know: by providing his web site address I give him the publicity that he seeks. But you might check it out just for a goof. Trust me, it is all science fiction. (Square clouds? Yeah, right...). The only thing missing from his site is the frantic warning of "Watch the skies, everywhere! Keep looking. Keep watching the skies!"

But hey, how come nobody ever gets all huffy at the Secret Service for calling the President a POTUS, anyway? Seems a lot more disrespectful than anything I said...

And nothing I said could possibly be considered "political" anyway, all I suggested was that I'd rather see him get rained on than the city of New Orleans be wiped out... unless it was the idea of him getting all wet. But that's not the same thing as being all wet. Is it?

OK, that last *was* a little political... but since I'm being tarred and feathered for the crime I might as well indulge a bit... and since when isn't a President fair game for a joke or two? It's an American tradition, right up there with Mom and apple pie. Or is it true what they say, that Republicans have no sense of humor?

Y'all need to lighten up on the knee-jerk defensive reactions.

I like that. I always thought the disclaimer that a poster came from "a non-smoking family" was kinda silly until I got two or three posters from what must of been the Marlboro Man himself and the term "smoke house" took on a whole new meaning.  I knew these things reeked before I had the package open. Had the seller graded the posters "Good shape but they smell like Camels" I may have passed on his goods.

Ironically, one of the posters was a PULP FICTION Lucky Strike teaser.

Re: [MOPO] Help! Weird message from 'Ebay member'/ID THEFT!

2005-09-27 Thread pj angel

True Story:

Yesterday, while I was looking at my ebigtownfilmposters seller site, checking on the VHS/DVDs I have running, to my astonished eyes a new auction suddenly appeared. It was for a $999 exercise bike. As I was trying to reacquire my wits, a second auction appears: a John Deere tractor!! A quick look around the house and backyard revealed neither item. (ha ha)

The seller fees were hundreds of dollars! (Blood rushing from my face. I'm feeling dizzy...)

Thinking I was seeing things, I logged out and logged back. Or tried to. My password would no longer work. (Am I gonna faint now?)

Without the aid of smelling salts I was able to sit for a moment and think out this deplorable situation and by doing so, able to figure out my next move. It was this: Live Chat on eBay got me a moderator within minutes. After explaining the situation to "Kenau", and proving to him I was the right person for the account, the account was immediately "blocked", the bogus fees  removed.

So, how did this happen? Kenau check the account and came up with:

Answer: I replied to a bogus "Ask A Seller A Question" email in my [EMAIL PROTECTED] account. It looked legit in every way.  Sellers get these all the time. I get them all the time. Now I can't trust them anymore. Neither should you. I have changed my ebay Password. I have changed my Yahoo email Password. I will block future emails with eBay in the address and rely only on the message center in the eBay account itself.

I thought I was the most careful guy on this list when it came to bogus/spoof email protection. I thought I could spot them a mile off. I never responded to any email from eBay in my account. I was careful, careful, careful... Turns out it doesn't matter how careful you are, they'll get you some how, some way.

Hats off to ebay, though, for the quick and desicisive kill, and fix, of the account.

The ebay email is worth sharing with you now:

"Dear ebigtownfilmposters ([EMAIL PROTECTED]),It appears your account was accessed by an unauthorized third party and used to place several unauthorized listings on eBay or to alter some of your current listings. Additionally, the email address on your account may have been tampered with, which is why you may not have received an email about these listings we have taken several steps to secure your eBay account
We were able to end all unauthorized listings on your account without incident. At the time the listings were ended, all associated fees were credited to your account. We assure you that your credit card information is stored on a secure server and cannot be viewed by anyone. To regain control of your account, please follow the steps outlined below:
1. Change the password on your personal EMAIL account to verify that it is secure and cannot be accessed by anyone other than you.2. Click the " “Forgot your password” link on the eBay Sing In page and change your password using the instructions provided.3. Click on the "Security Center" link found at the bottom of most eBay pages. Click on the "eBay Account Protection" link the Online Security Resources box. This will take you to the help page entitled Securing Your Account and Reporting Account Theft."

In in a few days I'll request the "block" on the account to be removed (via Live Chat), and with new passwords (at ebay and yahoo) start again, but this time better protected and wiser. I hope.

Bottom line: Henry, don't even think about responding to this, or any future email, from eBay or PayPal. If you have a question if it's legit or not, forward it to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]: they will let you know it it's good or not.

JR, all,

Scary is right. They were able to access my eBay account, take it over (change the PW), and list bogus auctions just by me answering the "ASK THE SELLER A QUESTION: "Will you combine multiple items for one postage cost?" on my yahoo email account with the answer: "Yes. I certainly will. Thank you for emailing".

The eBay rep could not offer any explanation. I don't think he could offer one. I still find it hard to believe. If there are any computer geniuses reading this that can confirm this is possible, please do so.

I'm still wracking the brain: maybe there was something else I inadvertently did wrong.

A note to everyone: Because of stuff like this I do not have a "password list" on my computer and whenever I get to one of those log-ins where they ask "remember me on this computer" I say no. If you get a question from a potential buyer, don't "reply" to it. Instead, note the return email address and compose a NEW message -- using a totally DIFFERENT email address to send it with than the one which is registered to your eBay account -- and answer the potential buyer's question that way.
Not bad. But this is even better:

If you get a ASK A SELLER A QUESTION from a potential buyer, don't "reply" to it. Instead, go to your MY EBAY account and if the question/email is legit, it will be listed in your "message center".  Answer it there.

PJ,

The only thing I can think of is this:

1) Once they had your email address (the one registered to your eBay account and eBay ID) they somehow managed to re-direct eBay messages sent to that address to themselves. I'm not sure how this is done, but I have heard it is possible -- perhaps by using a little backdoor recently applied to the structure of the internet in the interests of "national security" which the hackers have found out how to access?

2) If they could redirect messages sent by eBay to your address to their own address, they could then go to eBay, click on the "forgot my password" button and proceed to change your original password to one of their own -- since ebay sends confirmation messages to the registered account email address that must be received and clicked before the password change can take place.

I can't imagine it being done any other way if you never typed your password into a cleverly-designed "Trojan" sign-in page.

If I'm right about how it was done, it means that the internet has been so thoroughly compromised at this point -- by whomever for whatever reason -- that doing business on it is now a much higher-risk proposition than it has ever been. A truly dismal thought.

Here's one suggestion I'll toss out to the group and see what people think:

If indeed all they needed to access PJ's eBay account was the email address he had registered with that account, there might be a way to still respond to a question sent to you via "ask seller a question" and be safe. How about: If you get a question from a potential buyer, don't "reply" to it. Instead, note the return email address and compose a NEW message -- using a totally DIFFERENT email address to send it with than the one which is registered to your eBay account -- and answer the potential buyer's question that way.

The auctions were immediately stopped, the account blocked, a new password assigned, and the bogus seller fees removed. All within 10 minutes. I agree with JR.  I've been collecting incomplete posters (for myself and others) for some time and have had no success joining a single poster.  I'm inclined to believe there are pieces out there for some of the pieces I have, but who knows where they are?  Perhaps they are in the same place as all those missing socks

"Fabricate" (to make into fabric?) the poster and enjoy it.  Just confirm with your restorer that if you ever find the original piece you would want it re-done so you can be aware of the costs involved beforehand.

William,

I would love to see what kind of odds the bookmakers in Vegas would put on this. Needle in a haystack at the very least. May I suggest something? Since a full 3-sheet of this Title would be stunning on display, why not take advantage of your ownership of the bottom two-thirds and go ahead with fabricating the top part? That way you could display it and enjoy it while you wait for the near-impossible to happen as far as finding an original top third. The fabrication wouldn't be that expensive and professionally done would not be discernable from an original. If your long-shot ever comes in, then you can replace the fabrication with the original.

Just a thought.

Hi everyone,
We were referred to this website from Sue @ Hollywood Poster Frames. We bought a 3 sheet to the 1957 sci-fi movie: Invasion of the Saucer-men. The only problem is the missing top portion. We hear that this can be fabricated BUT we rather wait it out and await for a lower grade complete 3 sheet or a portion of the top 3 sheet. We know this will be a needle in a haystack BUT we must try :-) A picture of our 3 sheet can be found at www.80sKid.com We will pay a FINDERS FEE or decent price to find this elusive portion or complete low to mid grade poster. Hope to hear from you soon. Good day

[MOPO] R.I.P. Dennis Thomas, New BigTown site, MPB

2006-03-12 Thread PJ Angel
Hello all,     It's been awhile.     Freddie Poe, aka Dr. Vollin MD, has put together a fitting tribute page to Dennis, whom, as you know,  passed away March 1st, being 42 years of age.      www.poe.pjangel.com     Dennis' picture has been provided, and looking at his young man should, if nothing else,  drive home the point that Life is pretty darn fragile and fleeting, and the time we have been allotted on this planet should be spent in celebration as if it was your last day, because it very well could be.      Also, I have included a tribute to Dennis on the newly reconstructed and rebuilt Big Town Film Posters web site (the old site was ruined by hackers and a really destructive virus) with the new address of www.pjAngel!
 .com.
I invite you over and welcome your comments, queries, and complaints. And site links. [MOPO] DR. VOLLIN M.D.'s Latest Prescription For Auction Prices Now On-Line

2004-10-12 Thread pj angel

Hi All,

Freddie Poe, aka Dr. Vollin, has been rather busy the last couple of months digging up
eBay auctions on horror paper. It's a Back to Sghoul Special. (It's a moldy job but someone has to do it.)

His latest pre-pub MCW article, AUCTION AXE-TION, is now on line at his terrifying web site. Don't go alone. It's scary over there.

If you're thinking of bidding on a horror item or two at the current Movie Poster Bid Horror Auction (www.movieposterbid.com) you might check out Dr.V's article first for prices paid for recent-past horror items. The Doctor Knows Best and you wouldn't want to over-pay for some THING would you?

Right you are Sue. I meant to point that out but it didn't make it from brain to
keyboard.

I also failed to mention that while there are high prices galore on Bruce's auctions
I won a very cool half sheet last week for 99 cents. A nice one, too.

Bargains can still be realized on emovieposter.com auctions.

Excellent point P.J. and thanks for putting the comparison right in front of us.  You can certainly understand the frustration of the dealer with no bids but on the other hand, Bruce's auctions have risen to the point they are because he is not a "lazy" seller. Could Dave's Vertigo poster been "faded" during the cleaning process before
LB'ing?

In general, how do bright red/orange-ish titles, or bright color backgrounds on
a poster, fare during chemical bathes? Do they come out a little lighter? Could
this be the reason this poster appears sun faded?

Maybe Dave's second one, also LB'd, (but in near flawless color-shape), was
never submerged in chemicals.

I think we'd all like to read your comments.

Weird stuff going on at eBay tonight. I can't get two of my listed items to
show up: the DVD Seasons 1 and 2 of BONES. All the posters are listing fine as
are a dozen other DVDs.

Why would some listings show up immediately while others not?

Here's another try at a workable link:

LOL...

I just got the "official" word from eBay why it took so long for my two
seasons of the Fox TV show BONES to be indexed with my movie posters.

Re: [MOPO] NEED HELP IN IDENTIFYING A STILL

2009-01-26 Thread PJ Angel
Sue,Based upon the still depicting a jungle scene, by process of
elimination, we can scratch off Slightly Dangerous, Christmas in
July, and Pittsburgh - not a jungle scene in the bunch. This leaves
The Sea God (1930) with Fay Wray.User Comments from IMDB for
The Sea God (1930) has this review...The Sea God is an early
sound melodrama about two men vying for Fay Wray and wealth in the South
Pacific. I bought this DVD in my unhealthy quest to see every Fay Wray film
available, and I was pleasantly surprised that this was a fairly entertaining
little film. Good locations, decent direction and photography (in spots), and a
couple of twists made it well worth its short 75 minute running time. It's a bit
creaky, and some of the acting doesn't hold up well, but overall not a bad
effort. Fay looks great as the object of affection of the two men. There is even
a scene where she is snatched from a boat by hostile dark skinned cannibals ala
King Kong.Sounds like a film that could have a diving suit, jungle
scenes, arrows, and natives... pj

Hi Zeev   This is Sue from LearnAboutMoviePosters.com.  According to our research for the U.S. Movie Studio Production Code book and our website, (we have gathered approximately 22,000 different production code numbers so far), the number "1271" was used by at least 3 major studios.  Here is the information we have:   MGM - 1943 - Slightly Dangerous Paramount - 1930 - Sea God (New York Series) Paramount - 1940 - Christmas in July (L Series) Universal - 1942 - Pittsburgh   I hope one of these matches your still.   SueFrom: MoPo List [mailto:mop...@sol03.american.edu] On Behalf Of lobby card invasionSent: Monday, January 26, 2009 10:44To: mop...@sol03.american.eduSubject: Re: [MOPO] NEED HELP IN IDENTIFYING A STILL Hi everybody,   I need your help in identifying a still.   It shows a jungle scene where a large number of natives are bowing to a man dressed in what looks like an old fashioned deep diving suit.  The man in the suit may have an arrow stuck in his chest? The still has the number  1271-168 Anybody knows the title of this movie?   Is there already an available list cross referencing still numbers and movie titles?   I vaguely remember Bruce H once purchased such a list, but I'm not sure it was ever published.   Thank you,   Zeev     Visit the MoPo Mailing List Web Site at www.filmfan.com ___ How to UNSUBSCRIBE from the MoPo Mailing List Send a message addressed to: lists...@listserv.american.edu In the BODY of your message type: SIGNOFF MOPO-L The author of this message is solely responsible for its content.   Visit the MoPo Mailing List Web Site at www.filmfan.com ___ How to UNSUBSCRIBE from the MoPo Mailing List Send a message addressed to: lists...@listserv.american.edu In the BODY of your message type: SIGNOFF MOPO-L The author of this message is solely responsible for its content.

Re: [MOPO] The best television show of all time...

2009-02-19 Thread PJ Angel
THE NEW ADDAMS FAMILY was awesome. I particularly liked the new Gomez. Great stuff there...

I'm a Joss Whedon Fan so have to go with BtVS, Angel, and Firefly as the first, second, and third best and for fourth and fifth, Kojack and Cannon.

The best TV show of all time would be MY LITTLE MARGIE, wouldn't it?

Last year, you might remember that I recommended a little Aussie show called the Hollowmen (I sent the recommendation after only 3 episodes had aired - that's how good it was).  Well, they've finished the first two series now - and they're available on DVD (region 4 only - and they're already out of print)!  This may be your only chance to see this brilliant show, if you live anywhere up-over...

If I had to pick the 5 greatest comedy shows of all time, The Hollowmen would be in there with Fawlty Towers, The Office, Absolutely Fabulous, and Arrested Development.  That's how good it is (it's made by the exact same people who made the great indie films The Castle and The Dish).

Get it now before it's gone forever...
