[newbie] Mandrake 8.1 update wrecked my system.
Recently, my monitor died and the process of finding a suitable replacement led to a series of new problems. Someone at Mandrake told me that I really needed to update my 8.1 system (which had been working just fine), and the process of installing the updates royally messed everything up. Now, when I try to boot up with Linux or Win4Lin, after the system goes through all the usual start-up processes, a shell login appears on the screen for less than second and then the screen goes black and there is nothing I can do except hit reset on the box. If I boot up with either Linux-nonfb or failsafe, the computer starts up fine and everything works fine, except I cannot start up Win4Lin. I have been trying for more than two weeks to solve this problem, without any progress. I am willing to pay a reasonable fee for a satisfactory solution, but feel that the Mandrake 8.1 updates are responsible for my problems and it irks me to have to pay for a solution that Mandrake caused. My system worked just fine before doing the Mandrake updates. Re: [newbie] Mandrake 8.1 and KDE 3
Mark You can still use 'most' of the applications on your distribution CD's (including xmms) Those applications that use the KDE2.2.2 widget library libqt2 still work because you can keep libqt2 installed alongside the new libqt3. Those applicatons that use the gtk widget set are unaffected by the upgrade. A few applications (like komba2) need to be upgraded, but they are either included in the kde3 rpm or are available from places like Texstars site at www.pclinuxonline.com ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/contrib/texstar/ Many people have found installing KDE3.0.1 alongside KDE2.2.2 a straightforward experience. However my own experience is that 'disentangling' KDE2 and KDE3 takes a bit of work and even now my KDE2.2.2 comes up as a mixture of the two. I've got Mandrake 8.2 running and it took three installs, the last one being done without kde at all in order to get kde301 installed and working on this machine. I don't know what they've done to KDE to make thing so miserable the packages so impossible to install, but I'd love to find out. The first two attempts completely destroyed the X server rendering the box concole only. The last install, as I mentioned was done on the machine where KDE didn't exist at all and even then it was a HUGE pain in the ass to get the packages to install. two days worth of dependency issues to resolve and even after ALL the dependency issue were taken care of would run the package install with the --test argument and it would tell me that it such and such a package conflicted with one of the kde3 packages I was trying to install. (as I mentioned I installed the system without KDE). the fact that it was complaining about file conflicts between a non-existant kde installation and the one I was attempting to UPGRADE to was more then I could bear. Since I knew there weren't any real reasons for there to be a problem I decided to go ahead with the install. while I didn't have to use the --force argument I did have to use a very similarly forceful means to get the packages to install. and through it all urpmi not only was NOT my friend but was completely useless. the final command with which to install everything looked like this: rpm -Uvh --replacepkgs --replacefiles --nodeps *.rpm So, my one and only question here is what in the world happened to kde and those packages that they're so miserable to install these days? I was expecting the texstar packages to be faster performing, and they are, but as they are a newbie would never be able to get these things installed without killing their system and wanting to walk away from this bad experience forever! Mark Yes, the experience of installing KDE3 has been mixed for many people. With my install it took me the best part of 2 days to get everything installed. Most of that time was spent 'disentangling' KDE2 and KDE3 (Try looking at the 'About' tab in applications like kmixer for example) Moving KDE3 to /opt has caused a lot of the problems. Many of the scripts still call applications in /usr so you end with a mixture of KDE2 and 3. Texstar has got a revised 'startkde' script which resolves that. Also if you want to use KDE3's version of kdm :- Edit /etc/X11/prefdm to set the PATH PATH=/opt/kde3/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin on the next boot it will find kde3 kdm KDE3 is clearly still 'work in progress', which of course is why Mandrake were right in not including it in the 8.2 release. Be prepared to spend some time struggling with it. derek Thankfully, since the install is complete it's been fine since. not a bit of trouble. (isn't legacy compatability wonderful!) Options: - Use fdisk to mark hda2 as an extended partition, beside the primary DOS one, so hda1 and hda2 boot under '98 as C and D. This was rejected as most of my Mandrake install was in the currently existing Extended partition and I didn't want to loose it by trying to have 2 Extended partitions .. having learnt my lesson trying to have 2 primary partitions :- - keep hda2 for use only under Linux despite it's fat32 formatting - Trash hda2 and re-create it as a Linux partition (ext2): This is the route chosen. If I really want to use it from Windows i'll run explore2fs. I've now got: 1 DOS primary (C:) 5Gb 2 non-dos 4Gb 3 non-dos 5Gb 4 Extended 25Gb The DOS Extended partition contains only Linux partitions!. Perhaps I could delete one and use the space to install a FAT32 formatted logical drive there so I get D: back hmmm, maybe later :- I've now got a 40Gb disk with 5Gb for Windows and the rest for Linux .. which dual boots happily under Windows '98 and Mandrake 8.1 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Randy Kramer According to earlier posts way back when, from Deno or Civileme, can't remember which, Mandrakesoft fully intends to make the distribution 100% standards compliant. Of course the can not necessarily speak for some of the commercial packages that they include in boxed sets. But the OS itself is being setup for the FHS and could conform within the next distro after 8.2 as I recall. Somebody correct me if I remember this wrong. Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Where do you think we don't? I believe migration is fairly complete. There are gray areas like KDE and other WMs--they can be treated like integral parts of the system and installed in /usr or like add-in software and installed in /opt/(windowmanagername), and neither FHS 2.2 nor LSB 1.0 say anything about it or offer any guidance. I check the /usr/doc and usr/packagename/doc files regularly and rebuild rpms to put those things into /usr/share/doc where they belong, and all our commercial software packages are set to install in /opt/(packagename) So where, exactly, do you think we don't comply? first the disclaimer, one mans theology is another mans belly laugh. a must have distro for me may be unusable for you, but... the 2 highest rated distros in most of the current reviews i have found are, you guessed it, suse and mandrake. most place them the same, a few give a slight edge to mandrake, one a slight edge to suse. i am sorry i have not bookmarked all the pages this comes from, but this was my overall impression. in my opinion, the downfall of suse is no simple iso download. the only iso files for i386 suse are live cd. while i really like the live cd idea (and would like to see mandrake release one, hint hint nudge nudge to everyone how reads this at mandrake) i also want the easy iso download for the real install. on the plus side, if you want to try out suse, you can do so (assuming you machine is fairly new) directly from cd, with no haddrive modification needed. in short, i have 2 machines in the office, if i didn't need win2k on the one my wife uses for work i would have one mandrake and one suse machine, and happily pay for both. since i can only have one, i run mandrake. There's another thread going on about mounting a Linux partition under Windows and the recommended solution seems to be Explore2fs: http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/explore2fs.htm That doesn't seem to give you write access, however. this also sounds like the old bug regarding the 'relabelling' of the extended partition' to a linux extended partition, but from the archives this seem to have been fixed beyond lm 7.2, anyway 'fdisk /dev/hda' and 'p' to display the parttion types will tell you what partitions you have, if by some cahnce you have got a 'relabelled' extended partition you can change the id back to what it should be, however this might not be your problem since you are installing 8.1 and i'm not aware that this presents that particualr problem, have a look anyway bascule On Saturday 16 February 2002 11:31 pm, you wrote: Sat, 16 Feb 2002 21:34:33 +: In attempt to throw the authorities off his trail, Tony [EMAIL PROTECTED] transmitted: Theproblem is that booting Windows from the Lilo menu I can no longer see the D: drive under Windows. -- 'Never trust a ruler who puts his faith in tunnels and bunkers and escape routes. Greg First off, you need to make sure you have the samba-client package installed. Here's what my laptop reports: [dave@dedannshae dave]$ rpm -qa|grep samba samba-common-2.2.2-3.2mdk samba-client-2.2.2-3.2mdk [dave@dedannshae dave]$ Notice that I do not have the samba-server package installed. I don't share anything on my laptop, I just take from other shares :-) Once you know you've got the necessary packages installed, you can use the command-line samba client like this: [dave@dedannshae dave]$ smbclient -L numidea added interface ip=10.0.0.93 bcast=10.0.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0 Password: Sharename Type Comment - --- PRINTER$ Disk HPDJ400Printer HOME Disk IPC$ IPC Remote Inter Process Communication Server Comment ---- WorkgroupMaster ---- [dave@dedannshae dave]$ to get a list of available shares on a computer named numidea. I see that there is a HOME share, so I can mount it like this: [dave@dedannshae dave]$ smbmount //numidea/home mnt/numidea/home/ Password: [dave@dedannshae dave]$ This assumes I have a mnt/ directory in my home directory, with numidea/home/ as further subdirectories of mnt/. There are also several GUI clients which make this much prettier (but, IMO, not any easier). However, I generally mount the share from the command line, then simply use Nautilus to browse to the directory and do what I need to do. And the box will be grey with nothing on it for a while, until it gets enough data transfered or until the transfer starts. hmmm - it doenst look like that - its simply frozen I have been on some sites that I waited for up to 10 minutes before I got an indication of a download occurring. So, I guess what I am saying is try it again and let it sit there for what you begin to feel is an unreasonable amount of time because the servers seem to be slow. well - i dont have to wait that long - because it tells me that it cant download the packages after about 2-3 mins the grey window i spoke before comes up when i initially start the application -not the download. --quay -- Dennis M. registered linux user # 180842 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] mandrake 8.1 and mandrake-update
hiho all i just booted mandrake 8.1 again - after about 2 months of using windows2k i felt like giving mandrake 8.1 again a try. when i booted up 8.1 the first time after installing i was really pleased by the new kde 2.2 and all the apps it came with. just a few minutes ago i thought about applying all the security and bugfix updates - and i tried mandrake-update. mandrake-update, it didnt work with 7.2 and 8.0 (at least for me) - i had thought that meanwhile mandrake would have managed to get it working - but no. i created a new source for the downloads - chose a server and i got a list of all the updates that were available. so far so good - but : 1) why the hell is the window which lists all the updates so SMALL ? on my screen the list of all the updates is about 2cm in height - with scrolling arrows next to it. its not possible to resize the list - to see more packages at one time, so there are only about 5-8 visible at a time. this is really annoying. 2) i choose the packages that i want upgraded - and it begins to search for the packages - after a while it replies an error occured while fetching package x a) why cant it tell WHICH error ?? b) i made sure to use the correct server - i tried logging manually in the server - and i checked the proper directory - i also checked whether the regarding file was definitely on the server - and it was ! despite of this mandrake-update isnt able to fetch the file - this SUCKS ! 3) sometimes i am not able to start mandrake-update at all - it loads partially - leaving me with a grey main-window and its not possible to close it any more - so i have to kill it every time by opening a console - suing to root and then killing it by pid (if i want to kill it with the pid monitoring program under X i certainly get u are not permitted to kill this app - why cant it ask for the superuser-password allowing me to kill it out of X ?? - instead it forces me every time to open a console and killing it as superuser - this is time-consuming, complicated and frustrating !) now please dont tell me things like download the rpm file manually and install it using command line rpm because i know how to handle rpm command line - but why use it if there is a X-utility that does it with a few clicks ? i know people are proud of being able to use console - and i am too - but if there is the possibility to safe time and make things easier and faster - why not use it ? another thing i hate about the desktop-linux is that there is no browser that can view websites properly. regardless which fonts/font-size/browser i use - i always get bad-looking fonts - not so smooth like ms-ie shows. has anybody of u been able to get mandrake-update working - or to get a browser that shows smooth good looking fonts ? dont misunderstand me - i like linux - and i am using a linux server that handles mail-dns-samba-antivir-ftp-telnet and so on. but this is console - and it works well... but what does not work - in my eyes - is the X-part of linuxso - are u experiencing the same problems i do - or is it just my lack of ability to get things working smooth under X ? should i use gnome rather than KDE ? - are apps working better under gnome ?? i mean - regarding desktop-functions/programs windows is far superior to linux. i currently run win2k and it runs perfectly stable - all programs are running without any problems - under linux i am running into endless loops, requiring me a high amount of time to - for example - simply install a program (everybody of u knows : dependencies that require dependencies that requireetc.) i can understand that this is frustrating newbies that use linux first time - as it does me - and i am using linux now for about 1.5 years. (although i was using more console than X) so - please dont flame - we´re on the same side ;) i am just really sick of non-working apps under X that *should* make life easyier - but dont do. all suggestions/advices/opinions are welcome ;) --quaylar Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Mandrake 8.1 and cdrom
Bob, I'm a newbie so I'll leave the experts to tell you how to 'fix' your problem. I do know, however, that creating two CD drives, one a SCSI drive, is standard LM treatment. As I understand it, LM needs to define a second drive (SCSI) to provide for write access. I've had problems with automatic ejecting... a manual 'eject cdrom' or 'umount dev/hdc' should work. Re: [newbie] Mandrake 8.1 and webcam
Well i recently bought a Quickcam 3000 PRO from logitech without knowing there support behaviour =/ it is supported starting at kernel 2.4.13 . Since it has Phillips ingredients. Phillips webcams are supported (allmost all AFAIK ) they use the kernel module pwc (so does my logitech ) but dont buy the logitech its a good cam but you will have to wait or hack better support for it . Example: i get the camera working fine with a small picture (nokia-display-size on a 1280x1024 screen res) that is because you need to uncompress the signal to get the resolution higher (it SHOULD support 480x600) but to uncompress you need to compile your own kernel with the module pwcx wich you get at http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ (a recommendable site ) Recommendable is to use a analog camera and a tv grabbercard (bttv) but ofcourse those are more expensive. Re: [newbie] Mandrake 8.1 Music cd
Steve, Audio CD do not have a file system (so I am told). You must _not_ a CDROM prior to using the CD player. Make sure you have done the umount from the CD and then launch the CD player. Try using Xmms. Here you can indicate the mount point (ex: /dev/cdrom) explicitly. The player should then automatically list the tracks and voilá, musique ! HTH. Re: [newbie] Mandrake 8.1 Music cd
Did you see the mail I sent you yesterday? Essentially I have configured my own Cdwriter to play audio discs. You have to make a symlink berween /dev/cdrom and /dev/scd0 That is if devfs is disabled. If devfs is enabled then you will not have a /dev/scd0. Instead you will have a /dev/scsi directory and at the end of the chain of directories will be a device. You have to symlink between there and /dev/cdrom (I cannot tell you the exact name because I have devfs disabled and I do not remember what it is called) The reason I have devfs disabled is because my cd writer will not record with it enabled. You can test if you also have a problem by typing as root cdrecord -scanbus If it finds your CD writer you are ok. If not you need to disable devfs by editing /etc/lilo.conf and changing devfs=mount to devfs=nomount then run lilo with /sbin/lilo and reboot. Then look at the changes in the /dev directory/ Derek On Sunday 25 November 2001 05:00, Steve Weltman wrote: Hi Again Derrek, I accidently clipped the error message that kscd gave me... I tried adding the line you suggested below and it said that it links to nowhere (probably because the /dev/ directory doesn't create any hdb link in it or a reference to a device called hdb...I need to make this somehow). The cable to the sound card is correct. It works in Windoz. The drive that is connected is not a SCSI device, but is claimed to be so by Linux because it is a CDRW (that's my guess as why), It is a SCSI device because the cdwriting backend used by all the cd burner applications only works with SCSI devices. Rather than rewrite it for IDE (the author says there are good technical reasons why this should not be done), the system instead has to emulate SCSI on an IDE device, hence it comes up as SCSI in fstab but it is the master on the cable (by jumper on the device). Kscd does fail every time (even as root) saying that there is saying that there is what? Okay, now for the not-so-obvious stuff...I just ran Hard Drake and it is ALSO known as hdb (Well, well now...)... So that's the ide interface side of the drive. Now the hard part, it being known as hdb does me very little good if the drive is reachable by scd0 already (for data that is), Don't touch scd0 or fstab. All the configuration is done as links in the /dev directory. because I don't know where to put hdb into the system as a drive that can be used. It isn't already present in /etc/ as hdb, so I need to know how to add this and then I can make a sym link to it (and create a way for the apps to access it). Well thats the next point I made. If the drive is physically /dev/hdb then there needs to be that symlink from /dev/cdrom to /dev/hdb ln -s /dev/hdb /dev/cdrom Does the link /dev/cdrom already exist? and if so where is it pointing? Derek Ideas? Thanks on the tip...I wouldn't have looked for an IDE interface as a source of trouble. Steve Weltman On Saturday 24 November 2001 01:31 am, Derek Jennings wrote: Steve Most of us have no trouble playing music CD's, so we must try to identify what is different about your installation to the rest of us. First of all be assured that music CD's DO NOT have to be mounted at all. They do not contain a 'file system' as such. So any attempt to mount them is futile. Nor do the contents of fstab matter. Fstab is about mounting, and audio CD's are not mounted. Second, it may seem a stupid thing to ask, but is there an audio cable from your CD drive to your sound card? It is possible for audio CD's to work in windows without that audio cable because from Windows ME onwards windows uses the digital interface to play audio CD's. The kscd player in Linux however requires an Analogue cable to the sound card. I don't remember from previous posts, but does kscd actually fail with an error message, or does it look as if the CD is playing? If there is no error message, then kscd thinks it has found the drive, and an audio cable/mixer problem is likely. If there is an error message then see the next paragraph. Third where is the symlink /dev/cdrom pointing?
Re: [newbie] Mandrake 8.1 Music cd
Steve I have looked deeper at the issue of audio cd's on cdwriters, and have tried it out myself with devfs enabled just like you have. I found that with devfs enabled it will automatically set up /dev/cdrom to point to the /dev/cdroms directory. If you delete it, it comes back again a second later. The second thing I tried was configuring kscd to look directly at /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd which is what devfs names the SCSI interface on your cdwriter. But that causes kscd to crash. So the only conclusion I have is to say that if you want to play audio CD's on your cdwriter you will have to disable devfs. This is not such a bad thing, since in my experience Cdwriters cannot record with devfs enabled. (well my one cannot) (You can test that with 'cdrecord -scanbus' entered in a root terminal.) To disable devfs edit as root /etc/lilo.conf where it says devfs=mount change this to devfs=nomount Then rerun lilo with the command as root '/sbin/lilo' (check there were no error messages before trying to reboot) reboot your computer Now in your devfs directory you should have a device /dev/scd0 Make a link to here from /dev/cdrom ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom Your audio discs should now work.let me know if it works.. The reason I am not using devfs is because my CDwriter will not work with devfs enabled. Have you tested your CD writer yet? To test it, as root type 'cdrecord -scanbus' If it discovers the SCSI address ok then you do not have to disable devfs If it comes back with an error message you need to disable devfs. To disable devfs edit the file /etc/lilo.conf where it says devfs=mount change that to nomount Then rerun lilo with the command as root /sbin/lilo (check there are no error messages, or else you will not be able to reboot) Reboot. Now the structure of your /dev directory will be different, and there will be a device called /dev/scd0 There will also be hundreds of other entries for non existent devices. Now check you can mount data CD's, test cdrecord, and try audio CD's Derek On Saturday 24 November 2001 04:31, you wrote: Steve Most of us have no trouble playing music CD's, so we must try to identify what is different about your installation to the rest of us. To find out just look at the /dev directory with konqueror at the extreme right is the 'Link' column. In my last mail I said to point this to /dev/scd0, but bearing in mind this is a SCSI interface it might be better to point it directly at the IDE port. So for a master device on the first IDE channel this should point to /dev/hda For a secondary device on the first IDE channel it should be /dev/hdb For a master device on the second IDE channel it should be /dev/hdc For a secondary device on the second IDE channel it should be /dev/hdd Finally, (clutching at straws) Are the jumpers on the back of the cd drive set correctly? The drive should be identified as a master or slave device. It should not be configured for cable select. (I only mention this because a journalist from The Rgister was unable to install Redhat when his drive was configured for cable select) HTH Derek Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Problem is if you look at his output, both /dev/cdrom0 and /dev/cdrom2 are sym links to the same device. Something was setup wrong during install. By any chance did you pick a security setting other than low during install? I noticed that anything above low (medium, high) supposedly restricts the devices to specific groups (which in MHO doesn't work too well). Most of my problems (sound related) went away when I changed security back to low. -mm On Fri, 16 Nov 2001, Hugo Ferreira wrote: Ethan, Seems like yours is not a simple case. The Clock Timer chip doesn't work properly on your motherboard (and on almost all motherboards equipped with Windbond clock chips, such as most VIA, and ALiMagik based boards). This results in erroneous interrupt driven clock timer pulses. This upsets timing events and time dependant functions. Linux (thankfully) tries to deal with this. Windows cannot (heh, heh). When you say plain ol "ftp" are you referring to the client or the server software? If the latter, there is more than one FTP server package available in the distro. I.E Pro-FTP and WU-FTP, etc. Try rpm -qa | grep ftp to see what actually was installed. Note: the installer seems to miss about 50% of the available packages on the CDs. Go into the software manager to find the rest. I ended up copying all 3 CD's to the hard drive and point the manager to the directories to avoid the constant swapping of CD's needed to install a lot of the packages and dependancies. --- i have installed mandrake linux numerous times problem-free, but not 8.1 as of yet.. anyone have any ideas? or should i take the damn server back? :) --- 8.1 is pretty good and very stable, but does many things differently. Is there a log file or something I can look at that might help in diagnosing this problem? I have the same controller and I have had that problem. You've got two hard drives that have been marked down as the bootable drive and I'm not just about where LILO is installed. For example, I had a drive that had Windoze installed on it and when I installed LM I installed it and LILO to a different hard drive. Diskdrake assumes you know what you're doing and isn't going to go look for other hard drives being marked as bootable and this is what leads to the conflict you see. To fix it, boot into rescue mode and run fdisk on the hard drive you don't want to be booting from and turn off the bootable partition. u sure that that will work if i turn off the bootable flag from my first hd (win2k running) then i wouldnt be able to boot it ??? The bootable flag just lets the BIOS know which hard drive to give control to. It does not effect a partition's ability to boot an OS. since i boot my os´s with nt loader - i installed lilo in the root partition of the corresponding drive instead of the MBR. The Win2000 NT Loader is very tenacious-- it's not going to give up control just because you have LILO installed on another partition. i think there has to be another solution - there were some postings on deja that said that there would be a special driver for linux to make it work with the promise controller - but up to now i wasnt able to find it The driver was necessary for 2.2 kernels but the module for running the Promise ATA100 controller is included with 2.4 kernels (including LM8.x). --quay Richie Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? The bootable flag just lets the BIOS know which hard drive to give control to. It does not effect a partition's ability to boot an OS. yes - and i want the bios to give control to the first hd on the via controller - because it holds the nt loader - which has an entry for linux (bootsect.lin on my c: drive) since i boot my os´s with nt loader - i installed lilo in the root partition of the corresponding drive instead of the MBR. The Win2000 NT Loader is very tenacious-- it's not going to give up control just because you have LILO installed on another partition. yes - i dont want it to give up control ;) it has an entry for linux anyways - so i should but it up fine. i think there has to be another solution - there were some postings on deja that said that there would be a special driver for linux to make it work with the promise controller - but up to now i wasnt able to find it The driver was necessary for 2.2 kernels but the module for running the Promise ATA100 controller is included with 2.4 kernels (including LM8.x). yes - i wondered about that - since linux was showing up something labeled promise controller at bootup. meanwhile i came across this on usenet : it seems that lilo doesnt know which drive to boot from because the bios doesnt recognize the drive - and thats right - bios cant recognize the drive because its hooked to the promise controller which has its own bios... so how can i solve this prob ? --quay PS : btw - every email of u is coming twice - any reason for this ? Re: [newbie] mandrake 8.1 on promise ATA100 controller
theres one more thing i just remember : when first installing lilo - i got the messages : Warning : BIOS drive 0x83 may be inaccessible ! what confuses me about this is : 0x83 would be secondary slave - so it would be my LS120 floppy disk drive. it seems to me that lilo is trying to access the LS120 drive - when i boot up in linux and all the 01 are appearing on the screen the little green led on the LS120 is flashing in similar frequency the 01 are appearing. does this look familiar to anyone ?anyone who might shed some light on this one ? --quay Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/81.php3 Looked here? It gives quite a lot of info about the noticable changes. Otherwise it just lookes better, and seems to run smoother (except that I can't get my floppy drive to work.. grrr). I think overall it is a great improvment. I'm having some Kmail and password problems but that is just a small problem. I think the thing I like the most about it is the fact that it comes with htmldoc. I used this program for my .pdf creations up till the 8.0 version when I had problems getting the FLTK installed. Works like a charm now though. Thanks Mandrake and all those who worked on this version. Will be ordering my powerpack version very soon! Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Since Bill helped me to acertain that my Duron CPU is a i686, and since I am running the default Mandrake 8.0 version for i586, (and since 8.1 would allow me to print chinese, which is not possible with 8.0), I guess I should be looking forward to upgrade to the Mandrake 8.1 i686 edition. But what's the difference? Does this mean that my current distro doesn't use the full capacity of my cpu? The Pentium 4 is an entirely new chip, and for the moment has no specific compilers. Since x86 chips are backwards-compatible, you can use i686 packages. AMD Athlons and Durons have their own architecture (and even their own compilation options in gcc), but are also compatible with i686. The AMD K6 series is Pentium-class, and so is 1586 compatible. Does this mean that my current distro doesn't use the full capacity of my cpu? Would the system run faster/better with the i686 edition? Is there such a thing as a Linux Mandrake 8.1 i586 edition? All Mandrake standard editions are i586 for x86 systems. They use to also release a 486 edition. IIRC, 7.x was the last one. If you --rebuild Mandrake src.rpms on your system they will write i686 rpms (if that's what 'arch' returns). BUT, there'll be very little if any performance increase over i586 rpms. Also, i686 will not run properly on i586 systems. I doubt Mandrake will bother to release future i686 versions for just these reasons. -- Tom Brinkman Galveston Bay Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] Mandrake 8.1 i686 edition (poll)
Ummm, well actually there is a separate flag for the Athlon optimisations., and they should not necessarily be counted with the i686. One list member compiled extensive for 686 a while ago and her results were disappointing. In general the binaries were slower on a 686 than their 586 equivalents. Athlon, on the other hand does show some increased efficiency. Expect that when gcc 3.x is out, there may be some larger benefits available for both processors.
