Io uso
ps2pdf13. Per informazioni: man ps2pdf13. Non sempre però ho ottenuto
risultati ottimali in questa catena di conversioni...

Ciao, Andrea.

:0:
* ^Received:.*May 2003
$MAILDIR/0305

Can you ping www.domain.com?

If you can't then it is a DNS problem. You need to have an A or CNAME

If you can ping www.domain.com then you may need to define a default

It's rather strange that updatedb hasn't been run - do you power down
your machine or similar overnight, or do you let the machine run all the
time? If you let the machine run all the time, it will run as a standard
system task once every 24 or so hours...else you can force it by running
 updatedb as root...

Check your cron jobs and make sure it's there as a scheduled task - cuz
if not, then something might be wrong...

The update is not being run because he does not have anacron installed.

In a root terminal 'urpmi anacron' Then even if he powers off his machine at
night his cron jobs will still get run in the morning.

Come on Stephen you must remember that!

Perhaps you could write a small script to purge the
~/evolution/local/Calendar/calendar.ics file which contains date stamps
for the appointments among other things.

Hmmm. Guess so if I was willing to trust my ability to preserve the
file integrity, but anyway

thought I had an elegant solution. Turns out that if I click on this
file in Konq, it opens up in Korganizer. This has an archive/delete
function, which seems to work. I tell it to delete all calendar entries
older than a given date, it gives me a list of all the entries that will
be deleted and I say do it and save the file afterwards. My calendar
file shrinks from 1MB to 32K and all looks good. If I open the calendar
again in Korganizer, the old entries are gone.

Now I run evolution again. Bang, the file immediately reverts to 1MB
and the old entries are back. That's clever! Just in case this is some
sort of I don't really delete, just move the pointer type problem, I
tried copying the small file somewhere else, deleting the original, then
copying it back. Same result. Run evolution and all the old entries
are back.

Magic!?!?

Microsoft Mandatory Survey (#3)

Customers who want to upgrade to Windows 98 Second Edition must now fill
out a Microsoft survey online before they can order the bugfix/upgrade.

Question 3: Have you ever experimented with the freeware Linux OS created
by a group of anarchist acne-laden teenagers via the Net?

A. No, I'd never trust my work to a piece of non-Microsoft software.

B. No, I'd never trust my computer to a piece of software that has a
restrictive license agreement such as the GNU GPL.

C. No, I don't want to mess with the ancient command line interface Linux
   imposes on its users.

D. Yes, but I quickly migrated back to modern Windows NT after I had
trouble figuring out how to boot the thing from the cryptic LILO
   prompt.

I think it is the same game almost anywhere.
The media are always hungry for a story, so the spin merchants find it

If there is a difference, it is the way the law treats the matter.

[newbie] Evolution questions

2003-06-05 Per discussione Leon Adato
I have to say that, coming from an M$ Windoze environment, where I
relied heavily on Outlook to manage email, calendar, and addresses,
Ximian Evolution is a terrific application to bridge the transition.

I've read several boards but found no definitive information on the
following Evolution-related questions:

1) Can you import Outlook email (from .pst files)?
2) Can you syncronize Evolution to WindowsCE devices?
3) Can you syncronize Evolution to online calendars such as Yahoo?
4) Can you syncronize email between a Windows machine running Outlook
and Evolution?

Details on each question follow:

1) Can you import Outlook email (from .pst files)?
===
I have found two basic thoughts on this: One is to install Mozilla on
the Windows machine, let *it* convert Outlook, and then import from
there to Evolution.

The other thought is to get Outport, convert the files and use
Evolutions File-Import to bring them in. The trouble I had with this is
that Evolution showed NO filters in the File-Import process. I got the
first 2 screens, then a progress box that said scanning for Intelligent
Importers, then a blank dialogue box (with OK and Cancel, but no
filters to select).

2) Can you syncronize Evolution to WindowsCE devices?
===
I see that a tool for Palm devices is present, but aside from an article
on Chris Herrera's web site
(http://www.cewindows.net/wce/linux-serial.htm) I can't find anything
resembling an application. Not to mention what do to once you connect
(ie: linking to Evolution).

3) Can you syncronize Evolution to online calendars such as Yahoo?
===
Yahoo has their Intellisync applet, which push/pulls between several
email programs. I don't see a Linux-compatible option.

4) Can you syncronize email between a Windows machine running Outlook
and Evolution?
===
I have a desktop PC and a laptop, and like to keep my mail syncronized
between the two. With Outlook, I simply copied the .pst files over and I
was good to go (obviously, only one computer can be in charge at a
time). Is there any way to do this?

How about between two systems both running Linux/Evolution?

Thanks for everyone's support and help. Hopefully I'll be able to give
something back soon.

A question: many viruses are nothing more than an executable script.
In Win, it is rare that one needs to run a script, and a 'good thing

Yes. You can either follow a particular process to export the mail from
Outlook into Netscape or Mozilla for Windows, then save the directory
containing the exported email and then import it into Evolution; or you
can locate libpst - this is a utility that SOMETIMES can import all
your folders and attachments and the likes into Evolution. The best way
to do so, though, is the hard way with the process as described above.

 2) Can you syncronize Evolution to WindowsCE devices?

Sometimes. Depends on the device; best to check on the Evolution list
for further information concerning that - or better yet, check out the
Evolution section(s) at www.ximian.com

 3) Can you syncronize Evolution to online calendars such as Yahoo?

See above.

 4) Can you syncronize email between a Windows machine running Outlook

No.

Check through the Gnome Control Center. It's not always as
straight-forward - but if you change the window manager (Metacity) to

Hello,

So. It sounds like you know what I would like to know about Galeon and
config files.

I would like to run in KDE, but use the Galeon browser. In 9.0, I can set
Galeon (1.2.5) in Settings-Preferences-Handlers-Programs to use the Kmail
composer when I click a mailto: link (with kmail --composer %t). This does
not seem to be as simple an operation in Galeon 1.3.3. Also, it seems that I
should be able to get Kmail to use Galeon to open links clicked inside email,
but I don't know how to do this either (although I haven't tried in Kmail
3.1, because I'm having problems with sending mail with the 9.1). Any
thoughts? Are there any reading materials that cover these things?

While I'm on configurations, I'll say that I didn't have any problems when I
upgraded to 9.1, but only when I did a fresh install (I, know, I should have
left well enough alone, few people have accused me of consistently doing the
smart thing). It has been suggested that I can give /home its own partition
and install without touching the old stuff. I've also been told that the
installer won't upgrade applications whose config files have been modified.
So it seems to me that learning how to tweak the files myself is the only way
to have the new version, with the configuration that actually worked.

One more thing, and this is probably heresy to say (see above about smarts),
but what files would I need to keep to install 9.1 and still have the 9.0
look (theme?). As flashy as the new is, having switched back and forth
I've found that the old icons and such are easier for me to read, and I just
plain like them better (the retro thing, I guess). Comments?

With an advance of thanks,
 -Jim

successfully able to utilize the second NIC in my box to share the
internet with my laptop. However, when I plug the cable into my
Wireless Router, and then attempt to get online with my laptop
(wirelessly) I am unable to do so--I, however can successfully see my
Mandrake box (@192.168.1.1) and peruse my webpages there. What can I
do to fix this? Anyone experienced the same?

I've spent hours trying to get this far (finally realizing I needed to
open the ports in the firewall to allow DHCP)

Much thanks in advance,
-Russ-

A question: many viruses are nothing more than an executable script.
In Win, it is rare that one needs to run a script, and a 'good thing

to write a script virus as an attachment and do the kinds of things
 that happen in Win?

no for two reasons. one you'd have to execute it yourself, so it's not a
true virus or trojan unless it can execute itself, and two, you would
have to su to root for the script to get control of your machine.

Out of curiosity, are you trying to mount data CDs or music CDs? If music, you can't mount them, but you can play them.

Probably a lot of truth in that. Reading between the lines on this list,

It is certainly good that KDE is there to give Windows refugees some

Other than the fact Linux has a cool name, could someone explain why I
  should use Linux over BSD?

No. That's it. The cool name, that is. We worked very hard on
creating a name that would appeal to the majority of people, and it
certainly paid off: thousands of people are using linux just to be able
to say OS/2? Hah. I've got Linux. What a cool name. 386BSD made the
mistake of putting a lot of numbers and weird abbreviations into the
name, and is scaring away a lot of people just because it sounds too
 technical.

Re: [newbie] kppp questions

2003-06-05 Per discussione Robin Turner
Well, I solved the login on startup problem with a simple workaround -
changed from kppp to wvdial. In case anyone's interested, here's a
mini-howto.

1. Become root

2. Install wvdial
$ urpmi wvdial
3. Generate the configuration file

$ cd /etc
$ wvdialconf wvdial.conf
(note there is a dot in the second one, not the first)
4. Make wvdial.conf writable (they don't tell you this in the man pages!)

5. Edit wvdial.conf, filling in your username, password and the number
you dial into. If you want any other options, see man wvdial.conf.

6. If your ISP requires that you specify the IP number of its
nameserver, edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/net_resolv.default to
include the line:
nameserver 139.179.10.13
(changing the number, of course)
Note: do not edit /etc/resolv.conf, as this gets overwritten at boot time.

7. If you want automatic login at boot time, add a line to /etc/inittab like
mine:2345:respawn:/usr/bin/wvdial
(there's probably a more elegant way to do this by making wvdial a
service and putting it in one of the rc files)

8. Don't do any of the above if you have a pay-by-the-minute connection ;-)

Don't feel like the lone ranger. Check your ~/.xsession-errors file and
your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file for errors.

Su to root in an Eterm window and start up logdrake. Search your
messages and/or syslog for the keyword errors.

These are good starting points. Good luck.

My system used to hang using dvdrip. I solved the problem by disconnecting my

and connecting it to my standard IDE controller (VIA). As a welcome side effect,
my drive was much faster afterwards.

The test script worked on my ati radeon...

That reminds me : I have an ATI Rage Pro card, and every
attempt to test during the install failed, even though MDK
found the correct driver (UTAH). However, just bypassing the
test and carrying on solved the problem. I guess the *test*
script is defunct somehow, at least on ATI cards.

Yes, during my install-woes I had to do some googling on the
matter, and it seems that Radeons are well supported, but
Rages aren't : one has to use XFree86-3.6 to get 3D
accelerated support, XFree86-4.3 can do 2D only. Furthermore,
the ATI page says that the UTAH-project is dormant.

I am not familiar with the Conexant chipset modems (since I don't have

/etc/modules.conf that force Linux to load the modules automatically
when needed. You might check the readme for the drivers and see if they
have similar lines to manually add to your /etc/modules.conf.

I'm afraid that I have nothing to add except second Joeb's advice. I had
to add my modem's modules to /etc/modules.conf before the modem worked
across reboots. HTH.

Have you checked to make sure whatever it was you were trying to rip -
the DVD, I'd assume, was clean? And the DVD drive is clean? (That's what
caused me some grief until I realised the damn DVD I rented was a bit
'dirty')

The rip occured without problem. It was while the encoding process was
happening that the system hung - so not related to the dvd itself. Just
converting home movies aswell.. so no chance of it being any dvd
encryption playing me up either.

Are you using mencoder for the encoding.
I have had some problems with the more recent cvs versions and have had
to go back to an earlier mplayer install. I kept having stalls during
the rip/encoding which I do as one operation.

John

I believe it is mencoder yes... not sure what version, but using dvdrip
version 0.50.13 and MPlayer 0.90-3.2.3

if you do in a terminal,
mplayer -v
Using GNU internationalization
Original domain: messages
Original dirname: /usr/share/locale
Current domain: mplayer
Current dirname: /usr/local/share/locale
MPlayer CVS-030108-20:46-3.2 (C) 2000-2002 Arpad Gereoffy (see DOCS)

this tells which version you have installed.
Mencoder comes packaged with mplayer so it has the same version number.
I settled on the above version because it ripped and encoded without
crashing the entire OS.

bear in mind that it may all be due to running your system, ie, cpu,
memory, close to maximum overclocking , that there is no room for
overload, and ripping and encoding dvd's is one hell of big demand on
everything, so I tend to run at night when I'm asleep.
But for some reason I had the same problem as you describe and cured it
by going back to the above version, which is not the latest . I see you
have the

MPlayer 0.90-3.2.3

which is supposed to be stable, but don't bank on it.

Certainly dma access is desirable if it relates to dvd/rom and hard

The location to which I was encoding was on hde1, and note the dma

hope my hard drive isn't about to explode.
I have unmounted hde1 and so hde lies idle at the moment.. but I do want

Yes, its hooked to eth0. This is odd, I just went into MCC - services and

I also tried (as su) service dhcpd start...and stop, and restart. Also

[newbie] Lost ALL network access

2003-06-05 Per discussione rikona
Hello,

Earlier, I had a question about HOSTNAME and DOMAINNAME, and wondered
how and where to set them correctly.

At the suggestion of eric, I fired up linuxconf (in GUI mode - it
would not work in cli) to see what's in there. The help available in
linuxconf was a bit confusing to me, and did not help to explain how to
set HOSTNAME and DOMAINNAME. I didn't know what to change, so I left
it as is. On exiting the program, it says it will update the config.
Since I didn't change anything, I said OK, do it.

After it quit, I seem to have lost ALL network access - local and
inet. I tried a reboot, and that did not help.

Prior to firing up linuxconf, I had access locally (in and out) on
internet, and could print to the local net printer. Everything seemed
fine and worked well after a fresh 9.1 install/upgrade. I know all the
hardware, etc CAN work OK. What happened?

I would really appreciate help in getting the net access to work
again. [Maybe also solving why the comp shows up as 'localhost' to
other machines on the local net.] :-)

when I select a msg to scroll down in (in the lower pane) the upper pane

[newbie] config/start fetchmail

2003-06-05 Per discussione Erik Janssen
Hello all,

I've got four questions related to fetchmail

Does anybody know how to configure / start fetchmail so it will:
- Run every 15minutes
- Run silent/deamon (without noticing it during work ánd without the PC
looks like being dead at login when detching a lot of messages)
- Starts automatic at login for my user only
- Stops at logout
I shutdown my PC everyday.

How to get the mail-messages that cause this message in fetchmail (what's
happening here?):
skipping message [EMAIL PROTECTED]:1 (0 octets) not flushed

How to enter my user/server data in .netrc so:
With 2 accounts on the same server (this means fetchmail cannot distinguish
them?)
- Fetchmail will use both to login
- Right now it only uses the first of the two and doesn't use the later
- I need to put the account information in the .fetchmailrc to pass this
Anybody a clue?

How can I configure fetchmail it will also download messages from other IMAP
folders than only the Inbox. The tree at the IMAP server is like:
INBOX = all inbox messages
INBOX.Sent Items = all sent messages (also used in my office PC to put my
messages in through Lookout Express)
Of courscours it would be nice to fetch also my sent messages to my home PC.

Thanks very much in advance,
Erik

I need to know how to find out whether ALSA is working properlly and whether I have

let me back on the net. :-(

linuxconf is asking for 'primary name + domain'. I don't understand
what to put there. My ISP is sonic.net - that doesn't sound like my
'domain', is it? Or is it the local-net workgroup name, which is
different? It would seem as though one needs to specify the workgroup
somehow to get the local net to work. I notice that LinNeighborhood
will NO LONGER allow me to enter a 'domain' if I try to 'scan as
user'.

I guess I need to better understand this domain/workgroup/hostname
issue. What goes where?

 - Run every 15minutes
 - Run silent/deamon (without noticing it during work ánd without the
PC looks like being dead at login when detching a lot of messages)
 - Starts automatic at login for my user only
 - Stops at logout

this can all be answered in my tutorial at the twiki site:

http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/WebHome

it's a mailfilter tutorial, but it describes in detail how fetchmail is
configured to do what you want to do.

you may also want to read the manpage.

skipping message [EMAIL PROTECTED]:1 (0 octets) not flushed

that means fetchmail has already seen the message, and so does not
download it. you need to tell fetchmail, either at the command line or
with your config file (see above) to nokeep, ie. when mail is
retrieved it will be flushed from the server.

How to enter my user/server data in .netrc so:
With 2 accounts on the same server (this means fetchmail cannot
 distinguish them?)
 - Fetchmail will use both to login
 - Right now it only uses the first of the two and doesn't use the
later- I need to put the account information in the .fetchmailrc to
 pass this Anybody a clue?

again, see the twiki site and the manpage, both have example configs.

How can I configure fetchmail it will also download messages from
other IMAP folders than only the Inbox.

IMAP, I got no idea, there you'll need to consult docs on the fetchmail
site.

No.

yes, it should be whatever all the other machines are set to, for
example my domain is simply called workgroup, the same on all
machines.

It would seem as though one needs to specify the workgroup

exactly

somehow to get the local net to work. I notice that LinNeighborhood

it can't see you as a member of the domain perhaps.

I've tested it out a little and it seems to work. If no new headlines

it still has to pull all the pages from google.

Put it in cron and run every hour? Let me know of any bugs, er,

running it!.looks fine no probs (except I had to install configure
sendmail).

Wouldn't it be an idea to show the first 5 or 10 lines from the extracted URL
so one gets a better discription of the article itself?

Good luck,

[newbie] gtk themes not working properly on blackbox

2003-06-05 Per discussione Adriano Varoli Piazza
I use blackbox as a Window Manager. I noticed the 9.1 Galaxy theme does not
work unless I copy it to the Default folder in /usr/share/themes. At least,
that's how I think I solved it last time. I had to reinstall today, and when
trying to get it to work, I notice GTK 2 themed programs work properly (e.g.
Mozilla, drakconf). But GTK 1.x (sylpheed, gimp) apps do not: they
still look ugly, with motif widgets. Any clues on what to touch?

[newbie] root and $PATH

I was configuring my pppd scripts and otherwise finishing an install, and I
noticed somehow the root user lost its /usr/sbin link (I don't know how to
call it) in his $PATH. Any ideas on what to do (I tried export
$PATH=/usr/sbin:all-other-paths but as I rebooted it was lost. Why could
it have happened?

[newbie] installing gnome themes

2003-06-05 Per discussione Adriano Varoli Piazza
I'm having great trouble installing new gtk themes and iconsets: I tried to use
Gnome control center on 9.1 and it only lets me touch what's already installed.
I've tried targzipping the folders with the themes I wanted to use and point
the program to that, but it doesn't seem to work. I really wish gnome
configuring was easier...

On the community twiki pages you will find a section for server

By the way - could you please clear your reply-to line? You only need
