[newbie] ALSA SPDIF and KDE

2004-07-28 Per discussione Aaron Robertson-Hodder

Hi,

I am having problems getting SPDIF and sound (using ALSA) to
with in KDE with my nforce2 onboard audio. It works ok it I use aplay in a
shell, but not with any applications that run in KDE.

I have included the output from lsmod and my .asoundrc file
below. Even if you dont know the answer I would love to get a pointer in
the direction of some beginner style doco on ALSA and SPDIF setup, particularly
a good description of the creation of the .asoundrc file as Im hacking
in the dark at the moment.

TIA!

Re: [newbie] camera-usb mass storage what dev is it?

2004-03-23 Per discussione Aaron
well I am not sure what you have done so far.

I found a directory called camera under /mnt/camera

I mount it and all is well.

That is in my Fedora partition.

At first I played around like you are but now I don't have to at all.

Maybe Fedora has an automount for usb??

I couldn't get MD 10 to read my partition table so I couldn't install.

But from here it seems that something isn't quite right on your system.

Your tecnical question.

Do you mean you log in to X as root?

That is a no no and unneeded.

To set up email do it as yourself.
To do tasks as root use su or sudo.

However if there is some strange reason you have that forces you to
enter X as root then copy the .evolution or .mozilla directory to your
home directory, making sure to change permissions using su or sudo.

Or check if you are using the correct network connection.

I hope you are using a registered version of win4lin, there tech support

[newbie] corrupted partition table?

2004-03-14 Per discussione Aaron
Hi,

I tried to install MDK10 alongside my Fedora core1 on a spare partition.

I didn't get very far. The installation said that my partition table is
to corrupted (it was created with Fedora) and I have a choice to delete
all partitions (not a choice for me).

it names sr0 and something calling it, I don't remember the exact
message.

Is there a way to trouble shoot this?
Thanks

I was
surprised to find that Audacity did not have that ability.

Don't be suprised wma and mp3 are lossy compression methods and it is
highly unrecommended to go from compressed to compressed format. I do
remember an application that does this but results will vary and if you
can find a cd audio file or a wave its the best. Also see if Sox will do
the conversion.

when I do locate for emacs I find all the emacs stuff?

Just for my 23 cents worth,
I was using evolution for over a year and just switched to kmail, I am not so
thrilled with either to tell the truth.

I would have stayed with evolution if not for the lockups I kept having and
it's lack of proper hebrew support.

I get the feeling that the real big boys email programs on linux aren't the
gui ones but the text based ones. I tried mutt for a short time but just
didn't have the time or patience to set it up the way I needed, but I saw
that it was more powerful and had the ability to do anything I would ever
need.

I never tried gnus but I would guess it is also true.
That fact that they have been around longer than the gui's is most probably
the reason.

Anyone try Sylpheed??
Balsa??
A lot of people are raving about thunderbird, I might try it and see.

So, are you saying that I can't install Windows on the slave drive and Linux

It depends on the version of Windows you are using. The 9x series (including
ME) want to be on the first primary partition of the first drive in the
system. This is not exactly true for Win2k and XP, but there are some issues
with non-dos filesystems on partitions lower than the Windows partitions.
Sometimes they are not seen and sometimes they impact drive performance. I
have experienced both. If you are going to use the whole 15GB drive for
Windows, and you are using Win2k or XP, then you should be able to do it as
you are proposing.

Most people install windows first, then install Mandrake, which will detect
your windows install and make it a choice on the boot menu.

So in your case, you might want to do something like this. 15GB drive for
Windows as primary master. 80GB drive foe Linux as primary slave. Optical
CDRW drive as secondary master and dvd/cdrom reader as secondary slave.

Also, please clear the reply-yo in your mail client. Replies to your messages
are going to you directly instead of to the list.

it being much more secure than Windows. I for one don't want

[newbie] Dual boot setup

2003-10-05 Per discussione Aaron West
Evening all,

Simple question here. I'm getting closer to the point of
being ready for the 9.1 install but want some opinions. Since
I'm going to dual boot with Windows 2000 (Windows with use
a completely different physical hard drive, my current 15GB
hard drive. Linux will use the new 120GB Maxtor) and Linux,
I've been trying to determine the order of OS install.

I read somewhere that you should install Windows first before
you install Linux. I'm going to completely wipe my current
Windows install in order to start fresh. And then will be
installing Linux on the new hard drive. Is it the right
idea to go ahead and get the fresh Windows drive working
so once the new HD comes in I'll be ready to go?

Thanks!!

M$ wants to see an M$ product on the first sector of the first partition
on the first disk on the first ide chain. win 9x ME require them to be
on that partition. win2k can sit elsewhere as long as a M$ product is in
that first spot.

[newbie] New to the list

2003-10-04 Per discussione Aaron West
Hey gang,

I'm new to this list and wanted to ask a few questions.
I'm planning on trashing my Windows2000 machine in favor of a dual boot Windows2000 /
Mandrake 9.1 system. My idea is
to have the Linux box become my main desktop system. The
current hard drive I use with Windows is a bit small at
15GB. I am in the market for a higher capacity drive -
anything from 80GB up - and wanted to get some advice before
I buy anything. Are there any drives I should stay away from
or is just getting any IDE drive (like a Maxtor DiamondMax
Plus 7200rpm IDE) going to work. I'd like to get the new
hard drive in, install 9.1 on it, and then hook up my
current 15GB drive as a slave for possibly holding all my
music data.

This sound fine? Also, is there a list of supported
peripherals for 9.1 anywhere? I'd like to check my current
system setup (network card, router, video card, sound card)
etc.. to make sure they are supported.

Thanks all,

Login as root; make all the changes; try again.
If that doesn't do it - at least in using the drakconf, try running
sndconfig whilst logged in as root; that's generally how I do it
 - then again, I try not to use the MCC tools as they often
 misfire...

NO no java.

I will say that on Mandrake it flew for me but on Xandros I can't get a
connection up??

But I would say give it a try. The other option is gtk-gnutella, but I
also had problems with it.

I use LimeWire sparingly -- just downloaded a more recent version. For
me, sometimes I can get files fast, but that's few and far between,
with long waits. I got one file in a few minutes, but another file of
smaller length is taking over an hour, yet the connection spped was
supposedly DSL. (I'm on a DSL connection, btw.) Other files sit
waiting for a connection for what seems forever.

I use it sparingly mostly because it really swamps my DSL connection
with just a few files going out and one or two files coming in, maybe
 4-6 connections at a time.

It does have a gui but I never set it up.

gui is helpful but not strictly necessary. I've got an old gnut but
last time I tried it couldn't find any files :(.

Re: [newbie] This is getting way out of hand

2003-02-15 Per discussione Aaron
I missed most of this thread but read it with interest.

The interest is because of the lack of point.

The point is whether there is ultimately absolute right and wrong or just different
opinions.
Islam especially radical Islam holds that killing others is an obligation if they
refuse to accept their religon.

They have a goal and are ready to use what ever means. The choice is to call their way
an opinion or evil. I choose the evil label based on the Judeo/christian
concept of good and evil. With real evil giving in only increases its strength. The UN
is made up of a host of nations who are not democracies and many of whom support Jihad.
The UN has not proven itself a bastion of freedom and democracy.

Sometime read the Arab press and you will get a clear idea who the enemy is.

I don't live in the US but if the United States relays on the UN and doesn't do what
it needs to there may be no country at all.
I wish The Americans and Pres. Bush the strength to do whats right because the opinion
of Jihad (Muslim holy war) is indeed the end of western Civilization as we know it.

Re: [newbie] easy to use HTML editor?

2003-02-11 Per discussione Aaron
Well,
The problem is that the more gui the slower is the coding.

I tried screem, quanta, bluefish and one from IBM.

The point is that a beginner should understand that html is not
programming. A good beginning is to look at some tutorials for html.
I would recommend jbarta's tutorials but they don't conform to the
standards.

The amazing thing with html is how little you need to know to get the
results you need.

The issue is what tool will get you there the quickest.
Any editor that gives you a list of the tags is good.
I ended up using VIM with the xml editing extensions. But I first used
the XHTML vim.

The what you see is what you get route will only confuse you in the long
run.

The first step is a good tutorial.

I suggest jed, kate, joe, nedit, emac or vim, and do it
by hand so you know how to fix what ever your wsiwyg
editor screws up. if you can't read the html produced,
  how can you fix it?
  and
how come, if there is time to go back over it and fix it
correctly later, how come there is not enough time to do
  it correct the first time?

I agree completely. However, a completely newbie to html
might find it a bit hard to produce something in a hurry
using only a text-editor. Using - for example - Mozilla
Composer gets you running. That doesn't exclude reviewing
the code in a text editor and doing a tidying-up job.

And, finally, in Konqueror there's a nifty little gadget
that lets you validate the code at W3C.

So : try Mozilla Composer. Validate the code at W3C and
study the errors you get from there.

Well I did the same but came back to the rpm way.

The problem is that everything is in a different place, has a different
name, there is way to much to learn before doing the simplest thing.

I also found that the debian community had a different mind set...

And the clincher is that hardware isn't always auto installed.

I had lots of usb troubles etc.

However the deb package rocks.

I was just spending way to much time fiddling with the os and very
little time getting anything useful done.

Well
my experience has been that the only open source option is wine, however
wine is not so stable and requires a lot of fiddling to get it to work,
and it is not so fast.

VM ware is not for everyone, if you are testing on many OSes it probably
is the best choice.

I don't know all thats out there but for explorer and similar apps
Crossover office works fine.

From what I have read on this list Win4Lin is much faster and runs more
apps.

If you must have it open then have fun with wine

machine to the other as they are in different rooms!

I tried eurobell's tech support, but their first question was which version
of Windows do you have? and the conversation went downhill from there.

 Can anyone help? TIA

Hi I saw the post and downloaded the mdbtools only to find it needs
glibc to be exact glibc-common-2.3.1-36.i386.
If I hunt up an rpm and install what could happen to my system?
I am a bit afraid to do this without urpmi but I don't see it using this

Since this is not the only thing I do I would hate to break all my apps

try the control center software manager.
Or use urpmi and the name of the package.

Re: [newbie] [OT] why mandrake?

2003-01-16 Per discussione Aaron Mehl
Hi my 2 cents
I started out with Redhat 6 at work and upgraded to 6.2
At home I kept upgrading Redhat until the 7 series when I tried debian,
a distro which looked amazing but which required to much time to
install.

I then tried SuSe but just plain didn't like it. The gui, the
installation, I never got my internet connection working.

I tried a 7 something version of Mandrake but it didnn't recognize my
hardware.
I windozed for a bit then I tried Corel oh boy a good idea that just
didn't deliver. They hid all the tools and I had hardware problem after
hardware problem. But I liked the ease of use and not being afraid to
have the video setup easy to do.

I installed a 8 version Mandrake and really liked it everything seemed
to work wow.

but because I really wanted to learn debian I installed Potato. I banged
my head for a couple of months, and finally realized I was missing basic
functions I needed so as soon as Mandrake 9.0 came out I installed.

I still experience some hardware related problems but once I junk
supermount life is great. I can't get my usb printer working but I see
that redhat et al has the same problems. I am waiting for the next
version (and not printing) which I hope will have solved some of these
problems.

The interface and tools in MD are just great.

Thanks for the response,
sorry I didn't respond back sooner but I changed email programs and just
now finished updating all the threads.

I now sorta have the drives working. The problem was that in my fstab I
had scd0 and scd1 but when I tried to mount them I got an error not a
block device.
I looked in /dev/cdroms/ and I saw the entried cdrom0 and cdrom1 I added
them to my fstab and voila the drives mount now. It just makes no sense
to me but there you have it.
Still my ide plextor gives me a message no media found but when I try to
mount the light goes on and I see it trying to scan the drive so I know
its working.

Thanks so far.

The second problem is my printer I have a usb deskjet 3420 of HP.
Mandrake finds it and installs all the necessary drivers etc. but it
doesnt print a test page or any other page for that matter.

The driver installed by default isn't always the best one. Go to Mandrake
Control Centre, remove the printer, then re-install it. Take care to use the
Advanced (or is it Expert?) button, which lists the models in detail. This
should ensure that you get the best driver. It's very difficult to change
the driver on an existing printer setup. Much easier and quicker to start
 again.

Yes I agree that all distros have their own quirks and I am now back on
board.

The drives all worked on my win boot that was what was making me
crazy...
And even crazier is the fact that the cdburning stuff found my cdr and
used it succesfully..
:)

The printer is another bag of beans, I went and downloaded the driver
from HP. I installed it according to instructions but I just couldn't
understand how to enter the command line options they gave to test the
configuration.

I tried reinstalling from scratch with the new driver but no results.
Since my cd problem is solved I have regained a bit of patience for the
printer, although it is a bit frustrating to reboot everytime you need
to print

I am going to the printing user groups archives to see how others got up
and running.
Thanks to all who answered.

well I did some research and the bottom line is do you want a distro that
lets you run windows apps??
Are you looking for a debian distro?
Then these distros are trying more or less succesfully to fulfil a niche.
A dummies linux for windows people.
Lindow
Xandros
and all of them cost money.
I tried corel and liked the idea but not the implementation.
They say this round of distros is much better.
But if you have mucked around with a normal distro you are probably one who
doesn't need them.
ON the other side. If you feel you want to run windows apps on linux there
are apps out ther e that let you do this some better and some worse just as
xandros and lindows.
These are Vmware and Win4lin and crossover office.
these pay alternatives will bring you pretty much up to the windowy level
that these distro's offer but with a user base that has longer experience.

Lindow seems a bit annoying to me at least Xandros is based on corel which

From what I know of Lindows, it strikes me as the worst of both worlds.

[newbie] menus menu menyou menme help

I am having menu problems.

I have lots of rpms that don't appear in the menu of mandrake and I want to
know how to scan the rpm database and have them added to the menus.

I also have applications which I added from sources or shell script
installations which I also would like to scan somehow and add them to the
menu.

I would think a way exists for rpms already. (as I remember in the old kde
there was)
But for tars etc., there would have to be a custom script or something??

I realize that for command line apps this doesn't seem so important. I
could if want later go into the gui and have it run from a shell.

I wanted to say something about this before, but constantly forget to do
so - so I'll do it now.

WINE wants to be an abstraction layer - a clone, per se, so that
Windows apps can run - right? SO, if you look in the /usr/share/wine-c/
directory, you see a rather bleak and bland SKELETON of Windows
directories and the likes. Well, that didn't sit right with me - and
wanting to run MYOB whilst in fave linux, I decided to hack WINE.

First, I copied just about everything from my /mnt/hda1/windows
directories right into the /usr/share/wine-c/ directory. Fonts, DLL's -
you name it - I copied it there. I wanted to give Windows programs
everything they asked for. I also dittoed the same with the Program
Files subdirs, too. I dug through all the ini files and the WINE
registry files to straighten out things that had been changed as well as
point some virtual dll's to the real McCoy's...took a while, and took
a fair bit of experimenting, but overall, now I can run native Windows
applications in my linux world.

Now my way was hacked/slashed - but from what I unnerstan...WineX is by
far the better way to go...they've spent a good deal of time getting
WINE Game Playable - which basically tells me that if you can run a
game like UT2002 or HL under linux, running sniveling little MS wanna-be
programs like Viso (only joking there) would be a snap.

And mate, if I can live completely in a Window-less world (socially
even) then so can you!

I would need to be pointed where to look for what format such a file should
be in and how to link it up. (like it was an rpm data base that
mandrake/kdes/gnomes menus would think they were the same and update their
menus from it)

I would think a way exists for rpms already. (as I remember in the old
kde there was)
But for tars etc., there would have to be a custom script or something??

I realize that for command line apps this doesn't seem so important. I
could if want later go into the gui and have it run from a shell.

You will only get an automatic menu entry if the spec of the RPM defines
one.

If you think some menus entries are missing, then the command
'update-menus' as root will update the menus of every user.

Of course if you have been installing non-mandrake RPMs then the menu
entries are not compatible and will not appear.

(Note: It is possible for a 'bad' menu entry to prevent other menu items
being displayed. I remember Civileme wrote a script to check for
malformed menu entries. A search of the archives will find it for you)

Re: [newbie] Need advise on text editors for programming

2002-12-16 Per discussione Aaron Mehl
There are lots of text editors on linux but the two main ones are vim and
emacs.
both have a bit of a learning curve both do all that you ask, and as to
which is better is a dangerous question to answer. I have tried emacs and
after much persistance I finally learned vim well enough to call it my tool.

I am currently using the newly released ATI drivers on my AIW 8500DV. No

be slower than the last set and the DRI drivers, but they handle playing

Well it's not perfect, but you could use the generic VESA drivers.
Thats what I use on my Compaq Prsario 2710US laptop (ati rage mobility
LY). When I got the laptop it had Windows XP HE installed, but I wasted
little time in loading Linux on it.

Re: [newbie] [OT] Mousemats

2002-11-21 Per discussione Aaron
As a tech writer I developed tendenitus from the mouse.
I tried many device and it is amazing how little they help really.
the one device I tried look like a joystick but didn't bend. It was the
best for the arm and hand but had no scroll wheel and was a pain to work
with. From others I heard that adding voice control in combination with
the mouse helped a lot. the other alternative is a macro recording
program to turn mouse clicks into keyboard shortcuts. btw many programs
have keybindings they don't document that they used in development. Any
mouse where you turn your hand flat can lead to trouble. Also to assist
your shoulder check your desk height you may need a drawer to lower the
mouse and a foot support, these really help the shoulders etc.

keyboard based to a new package which requires almost complete mouse
useage. As I am now pointing clicking for 8 hours a day my mouse side
  shoulder is getting quite sore.
Now to the question, I have seen thigh mounted mouse pads advertised and
wondered if any of you have any experience of them, if so do they help ease
the problems caused by repetitive mouse useage ?
Another possibility is alternating between right/left hand useage, again do
any of you do this or does the action which is alien to the wrong hand
create the same problem on that side?
There's a few choices available that might ease the symptoms; 3M sells an
Ergonomic stick mouse, that's rather like a joystick (but the whole thing
 moves).
Or the iMac mice (NOT the soapbar ones) are good, in my experience. I'm
referring to the nice optical one where you actually use your whole hand to
 click the button.
Thigh mounted mousepads are not very good. Your arm tends to be bent sharply
at the elbow for prolonged periods of time, which isn't very comfortable.
Furthermore, they move too much, and unless you got an optical mouse you
won't get much precision (which I expect you would need, using it all day).
Swapping between right/left hand usage: theoretically, this is a great idea.
Just remember to switch the left/right mouse buttons; it makes sense because
you want the index finger to press the left/main button. There are only two
 drawbacks to this method:
 1) Most people aren't ambidextrous. Sure, if you play soccer and your right
foot is sprained, you can kick with your left leg, but your results won't be
 too good.
 2) Some mice, notably Microsoft IntellimouseS, are biased towards the right
hand. It's simply not possible to hold it with your left hand. Other mice
(like my 2button Logitech) is dimpled, which is OK.

If you're using a graphics package, then a Wacom graphics tablet may be just
 what you need.

In /dev I see links for cdrom, cdrom0, and cdrom1???

how do I find my cd drive names??
 Thanks
 Aaron

 No, I didn't mean that.

lets take your fstab entries below,

your device will be called whatever you describe it in fstab, so

 /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom auto
codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,noauto,nosuid,ro,user,nodev   0 0
the device is /mnt/cdrom, that is ok, this looks like it's the straight ide device
and you do not want or need scsi-emulation.

 /dev/scd1 /mnt/cdrom auto
codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,noauto,nosuid,rw,user,nodev   0 0
but here again you have another device cdrom, you should not have 2 devices with
the same name, unless of course it is the same device, but I don't think it is
in your case. Therefore change the name of the device to be something else,
 eg. cdrom2

 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom3 auto
codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,noauto,nosuid,ro,user,nodev   0 0
I think this is your true scsi device.it is ok to call it cdrom3

so what I am saying is, why not change the entry in fstab from ,
 /dev/scd1 /mnt/cdrom auto
codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,noauto,nosuid,rw,user,nodev   0 0
 to
 /dev/scd1 /mnt/cdrom2 auto
codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,noauto,nosuid,rw,user,nodev   0 0

and then ensure that in directory /mnt you have all three devices as:-
 /mnt/cdrom
 /mnt/cdrom2
 /mnt/cdrom3

That way you have 2 scsi devices, one true scsi, the other and ide device faked
under scsi-emulation , and a genuine ide device. All are then properly mounted
under /mnt/cdrom , /mnt/cdrom2, /mnt/cdrom3, and to mount everything just
type into a root terminal mount -a , and they should all be mounted.

the way you have it at the moment, two devices are mounted under the one
 /mnt/cdrom directory.

Hi just read what Stephen wrote about tweaking kde and I honestly am
finding it a bit slow. I would rather stick with it than change

Having bought APC last month and having loaded Mandrake on several
machines and in several VM's, I do have to say it's not bad for a
workstation, but required a bit too much of my time for configuration
and tweaking - package management and package installation didn't really
fit my requirements. Overall, though - and I do mean this honestly -
it's not bad for noobs or for workstations - and does come with some
 great software integration.

I have already recommended it to several clients/customers and the

I'm still a bit peeved over the lack of speed in Gnome2 and KDE out of

It will live on a few workstations here and in a few VM's here, but my

A common problem I used to have is not being root when configuring. The
configure script checks your system etc and if you are not root often
it fails. Also alway read the INSTALL file which will tell you lots of
useful information, what configure does etc.

[newbie] hp 3420 usb printer blues

2002-11-14 Per discussione Aaron
I have been using MD 9.0 without a printer because I have no idea how to
get mine working. One of the reasons I choose MD 9.0 was because of its
improved usb support.

When I installed the distribution it correctly found my printer and set
it up as a usb device. It did a few steps and then choose a driver.

It unfortunately didn't work.
The problem I am having is how to debug whats wrong.
1. Is it a usb problem?
2. Is it a problem of the printing system cups et al.?
3. Is it a driver problem??

I saw that there were updates for the printing system and drivers I
installed them but I don't see anywhere a driver specific to my printer.

THE QUESTION IS WHERE DO I START?!

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

Hi a thought, did you search google to see if someone made an rpm of it.
if they did try using urpmi if you have it configured correctly it will
try to find dependencies and install them, if it fails it will usually
give a list of the needed rpms. Which you can download or have it
download. I solved a lot of problems that way recently.

it appears that alot of deatails have changed. In fact that is a

postmaster does not know where to find the database system data.
You must specify the directory that contains the database system

I look for a data folder and don't find one.

these are the trees which I see contain a directory called data. which

A friend and I have been discussing linux in general and Mandrake in
particular.
below is part of a email that I received from him. Can anyone suggest some
good
reading material for this guy?

Thanks all
Marc

Personaly I have always found that working with it while I am
learning works best for me . On computers and about anything elese
for that matter. But maybe that is just me I seem to learn in kinda a
different way than most people.

That's usually true for me to, but in this case, don't want to upset my
applecart with regarding the things I use everyday... If I had a third
computer to play and learn on, that'd be different. And remember
learning enough to run my own is not enough, I want to be able to work
on others as well. So a lot of playing and futzing is required. And I'm
the kinda guy thats gotta have a gestalt. I need to build a construct
in my head of how this thing works and where all the switches and
buttons are just like I have with Winblows. Right now, I'm just
learning the terminology. And the tutuorials I'm finding so far are all
geek speek. They use one set of technical terms to explain another...
it's a circle.

Hiya!

Brand new to Linux, and trying to install Mandrake 8.0 on an old Compaq
Proliant Server (1500) with P166 and 128. Also new to SCSI, and this machine
has tonnes of it.

I managed to boot off the installation diskette, and got to the install of
Linux, but was stopped when Linux could not find somewhere to load the OS
onto. I have heard that installaing linux on these servers isn't easy. I
used Compaqs Smart Start CD, and I think I got all that right.

Maybe there is a command line way to get this to work?

Sorry if it seemed a dumb thing to ask, but you would be surprised how many
people have asked that question without having a data CD in the drive :)

Maybe your /etc/fstab file is incorrect. Here is what mine looks like :-
none /mnt/cdrom supermount
dev=/dev/scd0,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umas
k=0 0 0

(Note I am using scsi emulation that is why it is /dev/scd0 instead of
/dev/hdc)

If you are not using supermount, then of course the CD has to be mounted
before use. If you are using supermount, any attempt to mount the CD will
just screw up supermount.

For Quicken, check out Crossover Office. It (reportedly) allows you to use up
to Quicken 98, with the added bonus of Office 2000 as well (if that can be
construed as a bonus). I plan on picking it up as soon as I have 9.0
installed, it's gotten very good reviews.

Incidentally, have you found that Quicken works well under Wine by itself?

  They are Quicken and Agent.

ohh please, pan wipes agent out the door, just get the latest version, and
don't get 8.2, get 9.0, and Gnucash may not be better than Quicken, but no
reason not to think it is just as good for almost every usage. Heck the
Apps I don't see for linux are the US income tax prep and send and you can
use the online html versions of those

It appears that Wine now stores its config files in a different location
and uses a different syntax. Is this correct, or can I still use my old
  configure file.

I also lost read/write access to my windows partition except when logged
on as root. There did not appear to be an easy way of changing
permissions, but perhaps I could not find it. I tried editing my fstab
file but then go errors on boot up. Again can I preserve my present fstab
file, or is there an easy way of giving users full access to my windows
  partition.

keep (move) the current fstab as fstab-old so you can look back and see the
changes and edit the new file the way you want, I like to have only root
able to write to the fat partition, it makes sure nothing from an e-mail
ever gets to screw with the fat partition. use the superuser mode to write
to fat, any one can read from it. just my way.

I hope someone can find the time to answer these queries, or perhaps the
only interest is in people using versions 8 onwards.

Re: [newbie] Using a USB hub?

2002-09-09 Per discussione Aaron Peters

Remember sda1 and sda4 aren't DIFFERENT devices (in theory anyway), but
different partitions on the same device (first and fourth partitions on the
first SCSI disk). Seems like supermount is trying to mount the first
partition on the zip disk, which doesn't exist (for some reason zip disks
are always sda4). If maybe you could assign the CF reader to a different
device file (sdb1, for example) it might help, but I'm not quite sure how
you'd go about doing that (from the hardware section of the Control Center?).

 /dev/sda1 /mnt/media vfat rw,nosuid,noauto,user,nodev 0 0

Either of these devices work perfectly when connect to my laptop without

[newbie] Specifying a hostname

2002-03-29 Per discussione Aaron Winters

What are the "rules" when giving a machine a
hostname? The machine in ? does not have an external IP and there is no real
hostname to give, as in mandrake.com or something like that I am just going to
use it as a "learning box" for setting up web, ftp, Samba, etc. So can I call it
whatever I want, does it need to be, something.com?

[newbie] Can not get users web site to come up with Apache and LM 8.1

2001-11-29 Per discussione Aaron Winters

Hey yall, I have a clean install of LM 8.1 and I
can not get my users web sites to come up. When you type the URL http://domainname.edu/~user I get an
error telling me I do not have permission to access it. I have done this before
and the only thing I can think of is that this time during the install I chose
medium instead of low on the security setting because this box is on the net all
the time with a static IP running Apache, ProFTPd and SSH. The domain web site
comes up fine it is just the users sites that are a problem. I have looked in
the httpd config files and it has entries that look to me like it should work
but what I know about configuring Apache is just enough to mess something up.
Can any of you give me a hand?

Re: [newbie] Can not get users web site to come up with Apache and LM 8.1

Well, in testing after I found it was not working with my personal login I
logged in with my test account created the public_html directory, started
Netscape Composer typed this is a test and saved it as index.html in my
public_html directory I just made. That has always been fine in the past.
Does setting the security level to medium change the default permissions to
where that will not work?

I think your problem may simply be permissions on the files and
directories where the pages are stored.

Hello,

This is a problem I haven't been able to solve.

Hi. I'm very new to Linux so I bought the 3 CD pack for Mandrake 8.1
expecting the installation to be pretty much trouble free.
Unfortuantely,
after the initial setup/ welcome screen using the boot disk and bootable
CD-ROM, the setup said that it couldn't find an installation CD in the
CD-ROM. The error message is as follows:
I can't access a Mandrake-Linux Installation disk in your CDROM Drive.
By looking in the setup log I also saw some of these messages:
4ide0: Drive 1 didn't accept speed setting, Oh well
4hdb: Status timed-out
4hdb: DMA Disabled
4hdb: drive not ready for command
4isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=3.40, iso_blknum=151339
and other stuff like this

If you guys don't know of any solutions off the top of your heads then I
guess I'll see if we can get it up and runing at the Installfest.
Thanks.

He has a DFI motherboard with Award BIOS. bios version is current.

CD rom is primary slave, HD is primary master

This problem also occurs when using RedHat 7.2 and Mandrake 8.1 We
tried
two copies of the installmedia, so the disk wasn't bad.

Demo Linux boots just fine off of the CD-Rom.

First of all, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I built the
computer myself and currently I have Win 98 and Win 2K on two seperate
primary partitions. Then I used PartitionMagic 5.0 to create a Linux
partition. Anyway, the CD-ROM is bootable, but since I was having
trouble
with just booting off the CD-ROM I tried it again with a bootdisk. I
think
that I'm using the cdrom.img file if that is what you mean by the image
file
- the actual CD is from MandrakeSoft. Also, windows has no trouble
booting
from the CD-ROM. I got an email from Eric Sandall and I asked him what
the
situation is with getting rides to the Installfest and what all
peripherials
we need to bring. I can bring my Mandrake 8.1 CD's, but do I need to
bring
anything else besides my tower (i.e. monitor, keyboard, mouse)? Anyway,
thanks for the help.

boot disk and bootable
  CD-ROM,

a boot disk is not required with a bootable CD-ROM

newer Computers can boot from the CD-rom.

go into the bios to enable boot off CDt.
delete or a function key will get you into the bios.

(good stuff to include in any request for help)
What disk image did you use?
What kind of computer do you have?

-installfest is on 11-14-2001 we can help more then.

Oh, for trouble shooting... does your windows cd boot?

I don't understand why you would have a problem witha badly pressed CD when
doing a install over the net? I'm not using any CD?

I have tried to install three times now and keep getting the same error
when
Mandrake 8.0 is installing. I can't tell if its one specific program that
is
causing the problem because there is a splash screen over top of the
progress bar and the name of the program that is being installed.

When the error occurred I get a message box saying:
An error occurred
Can't use an undefined value as a symbol reference.

After I get this error the only thing I can do is press the OK button and
the installer starts reloading the list of packages and I have to go
through
selected what I want to install again.

Does anyone know what might be happening or a way to fix this?

thanks,

Aaron

8.0/i586 most definitely.

8.0/i586 is optimised for i586 (Pentium-class) processors, which you
obviously have (in fact, you have an i686 SMP).

8.0/i486 is optimised for i486 processors.

Corporate Server is designed for corporations to use, and so prizes
stability
above usability. As a result, it is always several steps behind the main
Mandrake distro.

[newbie] Some problems on mounting.

2001-04-30 Per discussione Aaron Chu

Hi,

I have a couple of problems regarding mounting on Linux Mandrake 8.0.

Firstly, I have an external HP 8220 CD-RW that is connected via USB that
is recgonized by Harddrake as /dev/scd0. What do I do in order to get
it mounted (if it works)?

Secondly, I also have a windows vfat partition /dev/hda1. However, only
the root account can have the right to write to the windows partition.
Is there a way to change the rights in order to allow ordinary users to
read write the windows partition?

Thanks a lot for your help,
