I dual boot between LM9.0 and win2k. The win2k applications I want are already
installed on the win2k. Will I have to install them again on LM9.0 in order
to use wine? Or can wine on LM9.0 run those applications that are already
installed on the win2k (the win2k is on a FAT32 partition).

err, before it stopped working.

I know I upgraded the dreaded webmin lately, but I do not think I did anything
with it. I do not even know how to try to do anything with the monstrosity. I
do not think I am guilty. I uninstalled the old version of webmin and then I

reinstalled it because I started getting bootup messages saying that some
related samba conf file was missing. I do not get any warning or error

However, when I use the Mandrakee Control Center rpmdrake uninstall window
to veiw the version of the installed webmin rpm I get webmin-0.990-6.1.mdk
but when I use the install window of the Mandrake Control Center rpmdrake
it tells me that the same package is installable. I went and used the
command line urpmi and did this:

urpmi --test webmin

I got the following message:

How should I proceed to get the network working again?

BTW, I believe filesystems are also governed by the same
mathematical laws and bits ;) I'm mostly doin some educated guessing
about all the above, Civileme, Juan, Warly, or Todd probly knows.

 Yep

1G requires 30 bits (plus a sign bit) to address properly.. since address
arithmetic should be unsigned, this represents the easiest way to implement
address arithmetic using 32-bit signed arithmetic registers.

2G is as high as one is likely to go with 32-bit addressing using signed
arithmetic in the registers, unsigned comes extra, unless the hardware
also supports unsigned arithmetic (the C compiler supports unsigned arith
whether the architecture does or not, which means subroutines to add
subtract multiply and divide unsigned 32 bit numbers if the architecture
 does not offer such arithmetic)

C compilers have target memory models as well, so that the compile is
efficient for the expected runtime environment. This is where the sizing
of 32-bit CPU kernels comes into play as well as the optimizations of the
 kernel itself.

Now the more recent Windows systems supposedly support a file size of 2
Terabytes... I think that is 2 to the power 41 bytes which indicates a 41
bit address if unsigned and 42 if signed. 64-bit linices generally address
either 8 or 16 exabytes (2 to the power 63 or 64 bytes), and file sizes are
 at least that large, potentially.

One compiler, xbasic, which works on any 386 using windows or linux with X,
actually offers a 64bit signed fixed-point data type. Some interpreters
offer arbitrary number sizes in fixed point (like the Python BIG=1L).

Limits are limits only because there are performance hits associated with
 size, given the architectures available.

 Civileme

As suspected, the memory management performance penalty is due to
architectural limitations and not sloppy software. Because the registers used
for address employ signed ariithmetic, using more higher order bits or
increasing the size of the registers would introduce compatibility issues.
AMD will not do that.

need to change some setting on my system?

You need to either, install the 'enterprise' kernel, or compile
your existing kernel from source and config the 'high memory' option.
There's good reason why this is not in the 'regular' kernel. Kernel
memory management above 1 gig is slower. If you don't just have to
have 1.5 gigs of ram (video editing?), you'd be better off leaving
the regular kernel as is. Yes, the enterprise kernel will see all
your ram with no problem, but your system will be slower. Probly be a
better idea to take one of those 512mb sticks out and sell it ;)

Pretty soon all the PCs and laptops will need to have more than 1GB of RAM.
What is happening here is probably an early signal for the kernel developers
to revamp memory management.

That pop-up was an advertisement - aimed at Windows users - or really,

With the amount of surfing that I do, I get those incessant buggers

You're running linux - no one's just going to link to your

The pop-up window did not show me any link to click. The pop-up had only an

I used emacs for a long time. It is so big and slow that it can do your

I am a system on chip engineer and when I design or verify multi-million gate
chips some of the files become so big that emacs just almost grinds to a
halt and you stay waiting forever for the screen to update every time you
did anything. And that is on powerful 64 bit SUN machines with multi cpu and
16G bytes of RAM. emacs was impractical for that.

I had to look for an alternate editor. I tried VIM which is a superset of the
VI editor and is free. I found it to be exceedingly fast and powerfull. It
probably could do anything emacs does and maybe more. I swallowed my pride
and converted my relegion and I never looked back.

I was happy with Open Office for a while but, because I started to run into

Well, there's a rumour that the latest wine release can do MS Office pretty
 well.

However i have not tried it (i don't have windows installed, so...) you
could give it a shot and see for yourself. Latet wine CVS can be found
 nicely packaged here:

Good luck. the first run will take very long as wine will
build some kind of fonts database. It will get nicer afterwards.

Do you know if this latest WINE will be in LM9.1?

That should work alright - but if you really want to update KDE, you
might want to just grab the latest RPM packages and do an upgrade over
 your existing KDE installation.

I thought the KDE Mandrake Update utility does what you are recommending.
Doesn't it?

Yes, it is and ISA card.

This is what I did to get it mine to work.

A) Install LM9.0 to start the graphical user interface (i.e. X) at boot up. I
found that the sound card would not get configured to work unless this is the
case.
B) After boot up and before you login using the GUI, switch to another Virtual
Console using the Hot Keys Ctl-Alt-Fx, where Fx is any of function keys 1 to
6.
C) login as root and issue the command sndconfig without the quotes.
E) Select OK whenever it request an action from you.
F) It will auto-detect the ISA sound card. It will take a while to do that and
it will appear to have stopped. Wait until it comes back.
G) It will play a sample sound after it comes back.
H) tell it OK then logout.
I) Hot switch back to the Virtual Console 7. That is the one you were in
originally.
J) Login and you wilkl find that the sound card is working.

Re: [newbie] Kmail issue.

2002-10-08 Per discussione Seedkum Aladeem

I understand that is the way Kmail behaves now. It is nice that those files
grow and shrink with the amount of mail kept in Kmail window mail folders.
But it does not sound to me a good thing that the files remain even when the
mail folder is deleted from the Kmail window. The user can have a legitimate
reason to keep creating and deleting Kmail window mail folders. His Mail
directory would just keep growing full of garbage that way. The user would
have to go in and clean the Mail directory manually. It does not appear to me
a nice thing that Kmail behaves that way.

[newbie] LM9.0 Xtart, Virtual Console and sndconfig problems.

2002-10-07 Per discussione Seedkum Aladeem

Hi,

I re-installed LM9.0 and I took the option to boot without X. I installed the
Xtart command for use when starting KDE.

I booted the machine and before starting X I logged in as root and issued the
sndconfig command because the install program gave me the message that I
should run sndconfig to configure my ISA sound card. The sndconfig program
went to completion and played the sample sound.

I then logged in as a regular user and started X. The KDE came up but the
sound was not working! Apparently sndconfig only works if I take the install
option to start X at bootup and issue the sndconfig command on one of the
Virtual Consoles with no X.

Regardless of whether I issued the sndconfig command or not, I see error
messages and system complaints when I switch back to the Virtual Console from
which I started X. Nothing that I can understand. Is there a way to capture
these error messages so that I could show them to somebody? I tried:

Xtart filename

but it did not record any error messages, perhaps the error messages appeared
after the Xtart command has finished executing. There were many error
messages but I have no way of relaying them to you. Some linux guru should
recreate the scenario and look into these issues.

Despite the fact that I installed LM9.0 with the option not to start X at boot
time, I see boot time message saying that the X server has started! This
looks fishy.

Thanx,

Seedkum

What version of Mandrake are you using...and what syntax did you try from
the command line. I think Todd from Mandrake posted a reply/message about
 this somewhere on the list.

Did you do a: eject /mnt/cdrom

or a: eject /dev/actual device name

Worst case - disable supermount and it should work (but you have to redo
 your desktop icons).

Hi,

I tried the command line eject in the following two forms and I got the same
result:

eject cdrom
eject /dev/cdrom

Then I went and pressed the button on the cdrom drive to make it eject. The
same thing happened. Also this time the cdrom directory disappeared from the
Konc window and did not come back even after I clicked the cdrom icon again.
Later I issued the following command in a Konsole window:

ls /mnt/cdrom

The response to this command was (correct):
Boot/ Mandrake/

After that, the cdrom directory showed up in the Konc whindow spontaneously.

The eject selected form the pulldown menu behaved the same.

The wiered behavior continued after this excercise. I will try to find Todd's

Well it's often advised to run sndconfig in a virtual console and not
  under X.

ML9.0 doesn't automatically configure ISA soundcards because it hung some
people's systems during install (IIRC from the cooker list).

  I don't know how ML8.0, 8.1 and 8.2 configured the soundcard. I am quite
sure though that it can also work in Dolphin :)

For most soundcards there are both OSS and ALSA drivers available in
ML9.0. The ALSA ones in Dolphin are based upon ALSA 0.9.0rc2 while 8.2
had the 0.5.x series ALSA drivers. What would be nice is if you still
have your /etc/modules.conf from 8.2. Oh, what soundcard do you have and
were you using ALSA (sndconfig is OSS only) ?

  Good luck!

Frans,

I booted LM90 in command line mode without gui and issued sndconfig on the
command line. The program found the sound card and did the sample sound test
without problem and edited the sound configuration file. But still KDE thinks
that there is no sound card. Harddrake lists no sound card.

The /etc/sysconfig/soundcard file now contains the following lines:
# THIS FILE IS WRITTEN BY SNDCONFIG
# PLEASE USE SNDCONFIG TO MODIFY
# TO CHANGE THIS FILE!
# There should be no spaces at the start of a line
# or around the '=' sign

Well, this may not be the way you want, but I found it works well. I
mount the isos as loop one at a time and copy them to a directory to
install from. Fast accurate installs result. For example:

   mkdir /mnt/loop
   mkdir /path/mandrake
   mount /path/Mandrake90-cd1-inst.i586.iso -o loop /mnt/loop
   cp -r /mnt/loop/* /path/mandrake/

   cp -r /mnt/loop/* /path/mandrake

   mount /path/Mandrake90-cd3-i18n.i586.iso -o loop /mnt/loop
   cp -r /mnt/loop/* /path/mandrake
   umount /mnt/loop

I will try this and see if it will work for me now that the base system
appears to be working. However, shouldn't the initial install be able to
see all three ISOs? It is able to read one why can't it read the other
two? I think that would have been better.

I can't find the Mandrake Linux Distribution in the specified

short extract of the files in the Directory:
  Mandrake90-cd1-inst.i586.iso
  Mandrake90-cd2-ext.i586.iso
  mandrake90-cd3-i18n.i586.iso
  md5sum.90

Well, this may not be the way you want, but I found it works well. I
mount the isos as loop one at a time and copy them to a directory to
install from. Fast accurate installs result. For example:

 mkdir /mnt/loop
 mkdir /path/mandrake
 mount /path/Mandrake90-cd1-inst.i586.iso -o loop /mnt/loop
 cp -r /mnt/loop/* /path/mandrake/
 umount /mnt/loop
 mount /path/Mandrake90-cd2-ext.i586.iso -o loop /mnt/loop
 cp -r /mnt/loop/* /path/mandrake
 umount /mnt/loop
 mount /path/Mandrake90-cd3-i18n.i586.iso -o loop /mnt/loop
 cp -r /mnt/loop/* /path/mandrake
 umount /mnt/loop

 hth,
 -s

I will try this and see if it will work for me now that the base system
appears to be working. However, shouldn't the initial install be able to
see all three ISOs? It is able to read one why can't it read the other
two? I think that would have been better.

Thankx,

I agree, but I'm sorry I don't know how to do that. Last time I tried
with the iso, I got the same thing you did and didn't know how to get
around it. It might involve something to the effect of alt+f2 (or f3
or which ever) to the install console and umounting the one and
mounting the other, but I never tried it. That's why I do it this
 way. :D

Maybe someone else will chime in with better info on this for ya.

I have not tried your initial suggestion yet but even if this alt+fx
were to work the install program mould have to promt for one of the
other three CDs, but it does not.

Hi,

When I boot LM8.2 from hard disk I get the message that the local file system
mounting has failed. Later, before the boot up is completed, I get a message
that amother file system mounting has failed.

However the boot up goes to completion. I am able to login and seemingly the
system is functioning without any problem. I tried to use fsck on the hard
disks but it would not work on disks that are mounted. Can someone help me
figure out why those messages are appearing?

I am not out of CPU cycles, I am not out of memory, I am not out of swap and

2002-05-20 Per discussione Seedkum Aladeem

Hi,

Can somebody share some wisdom on which to use, Xbasic, KDE IDE or other
integrated development environment for C/C++ primarily.

I looked up the KDE sites and it appears to my newbie eyes that the KDE IDE
is optimized for producing software very narrowly targeted at the KDE
platform. I do not know if this targetting will constitute a trap. I found
no info on Xbasic.

Can somebody share some wisdom about Xbasic, KDE IDE and other open source
IDE.

I am also interested in perl. To my dismay I found out that the Open Perl IDE
is for the Redmond platform!

My experience is bad. I have problems with it. Somehow the system gets
confused wether the floppy is mounted or not. I get in a situation inwhich it
would not unmount a floppy saying it is busy when Konqueror is closed and
there is no applications running. It is just horrible in 8.2 just like 8.1.

Something is not right. My machine has an AMD K6-2 but the arch program Tom

mistaken.

I think the difference between the i586 and the i686 is that the i686 has the

detected a i686.

I propose that Mandrake writes a program, if such thing does not already
exist, to test the CPU and tell the user which rpm to use, i486, i586, i686
or god knows what is next.

I propose that this program also be part of the os installation hardware

I tried to install the kdetoys-2.2.2-8mdk.i586.rpm using urpmi it would not
get installed. urpmi just gave the error message that an error occurred
without any explanation. I then used rpm to install it. This time the
installation was successful. I checked the installed packages using Software
Manager and the extraneous packages did not show up.

It looks like the problem is solved. No compilation was necessary.

[newbie] Moving the home directory.

2002-04-12 Per discussione Seedkum Aladeem

Hi,

For some reason (most likely my self), the home directory ended up in a
partition where I do not want it to be. Can I move the home directory to the
partition where I want it to be?

Can I log in as root and move the home directory? the home directory for the
root user is on the partition called / and I would not be moving it in this
operation.

Currently I have:
/home in the /dev/hde2 partition and I want it to go on /dev/hde3 partition
instead.
The /dev/hde3 partition is currently mounted on a directory /mnt/hd. Also
/mnt/hd holds some files that I want to continue to use.

I want /hde3 mounted on /home.. ok I think I got it. This is what I will
do once I recieve some blessings from this list:

I move the directories currently under /home to /mnt/hd, then I change one
line in /etc/fstab to make /dev/hde3 mount on /home instead of /mnt/hd. I
think this will preserve the contents of the user home directories and also
those files that are now in the /mnt/hd directory.

Any feedback will be appreciated.

[newbie] Redundant files. (long listing).

2002-04-10 Per discussione Seedkum Aladeem

Hi,

To overcome LM 8.2 install problems I faced, I have had to perform a series
of installs, upgrade installs and package upgrades. I ended up with some
directories that had superfluous entries.

I have listed out the contents of lilo.conf and the contents of some
directories. There is obvious redundant files but some are not so obvious to
me. Can someone glance over them quickly and help me identify what files to
delete please?

The file called kcore in the /proc listed below looks to me suspicous. Also
some of the files in the /lib directory look redundant. Some of these files
are not used by the lilo.conf file, also listed below.

I have also listed out the /etc directory contents. I think there may be at
least one redundant file there.

Can someone help me identify the redundant files? You can reply directly to
my email address and not the list.

[newbie] Software upgrade.

2002-04-10 Per discussione Seedkum Aladeem

Hi,

I am trying to use the KDE software upgrade utility. I have the three CDs iso
files in the /home directory and I am having a problem telling the software
upgrade utility to use them as sources. Can someone please give me a hint?

I have selected to use a local source in the popup New Source dialog box.
What should I put in the other fields? It comes up with /export in the
path field. What is that fore? I have no /export directory.

Thanks,

Seedkum

[newbie] Partial ISO file.

2002-04-10 Per discussione Seedkum Aladeem

Hi,

I have this:

[root@grumpy urpmi]# du -h /var/cache/urpmi/
1.0K/var/cache/urpmi/headers
264M/var/cache/urpmi/partial/hdlist.Mandrake82-cd1-inst.i586.iso.cz
264M/var/cache/urpmi/partial
1.0K/var/cache/urpmi/rpms
264M/var/cache/urpmi
[root@grumpy urpmi]#

What on earth is this partial ISO (second file thing)? Why is it there? The
size of it is eating my root partition space. Look:

[root@grumpy urpmi]# df /var/cache/urpmi/
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hde2 354818354818 0 100% /
[root@grumpy urpmi]#

Can I just delete that second file?

Hi,

I have a MS pagefile.sys in my ext3 partition. I did not put it there and I

[newbie] SWAP not mounted.

2002-04-10 Per discussione Seedkum Aladeem

Hi,

I cannot tell why the swap partition is not mounted. I list the fstab and the
mtab files below. I have not touched these files since I installed LM 8.2
recently. Cant somebody tell me why the swap is not mounted? By the way, When
I down installed LM 8.2, other partitions got formatted to ext3 but the
install program did not appear to care about formatting the swap partition.
so I did not tell it to format it. Any way, the fstab file was created
automatically. So the installer knew the swap had to be mounted.

Thanks,

Sorry, the broken KDE and GNOME from a single disk install will stand.
Itis not an error. You really need at least two CDs and preferably
three to make this work with such things as openoffice and java and
KDE3. RH has a beta out with three CDs and it will NOT stop install
with only one or two. In fact, CD3 contains the kernel, so installing
it with less than 3 is impossible.

WinXP installs from one CD, but you will have notepad and solitaire for
apps. With a linux distro, you get quite a few apps. Peanut linux is
still one CD, bt it has exactly two WMs and lacks many applications.

Most of what I have seen in the way of difficulties fall into three
 categories:

 1. Incomplete installs, often from the fact that getting a CD or DVD
drive to read what a CDRW hath written is problematic, and may have VERY
HIGH failure rates, especially for older drives reading 700Mb CDs and
for ultra-fast drives which should never have been manufactured (They
aren't ultra-fast, just ultra-high spin and do a lot of retries).

 2. Lack of knowledge about msec and what it does and why. This is
particularly acute right now because we scrubbed some useless firewall
configurations to revamp the tools so they teach better and offer more
options to people in an understandable way and people are turning to
msec which is essentially a static security setup, not as well
documented as most experts would prefer, and a mix of bash and Python
scripts. Anyway, some things work fine at msec level 2 but not at all
on msec level 4, and cannot be made to work at msec level 5 which is for
the people who want to run something like BIND safely.

 3. Genuine bugs--there are always a few. Three seem to be frequently
reported, and a fourth is under crashtester investigation.

 4. Supercessions and regressions--Something working in 8.1 isn't in 8.2
because the new kernel was improved for faster virtual memory and not
all the drivers have been looked at. This means that folks with SiS630
chipsets cannot easily get sound, and it means that there are NVidia
cards that are ahead of even our bleeding-edge curve that folks can buy
which simply aren't well supported yet, and it means that folks who
can't get SB Audigy cards to run well under Windows are complaining here
because they don't run well under linux either. And it means that the
drivers Promise sent out for their ATA/133 cards which don't work are to
be replaced by Promise's updated drivers in the first kernel update.

But we aren't talking about a sufficient number of genuine bugs to
 warrant a bugfix release.

 Civileme

The answer to item (1) above is probably the following:

A- Make the install utility do the md5sum tests automatically before the
install is done.
B- Make the installer utility do the memory test (and any other inportant
test that may be neseccary) before the install is done. Heck do them also
after the install is complete too.

Very true, but keep in mind most problems are user, then hardware.
'Least ways I've found that the interface between the keyboard, mouse
and chair accounts for ~85% of my difficulties, 'bout 10% hardware.
When I keep this in mind, problems seem easier to resolve. Approaching
from the opposite direction and assuming the OS or software involved is
the culprit, makes problems damn near, if not impossible to fix.

It gets old. When 7.2 was released, many were sayin 7.0 was fine,
installed great, but 7.2 won't, I'm waitin for 7.+ Update a year or
so and replace 7 with 8 in the above. Next year use 9. SOS-DD
Mandrake's got it goin on in that they are free. Proof's in the puddin,
new releases are made available (along with source), before the boxed
sets even get to the stores. I'd feel guilty as heck if it weren't for
 the Mandrake Club.

If you wanna run the best posible Linux currently available, you
might wanna update your chair or hardware. Micro$oft has a better idea
in this respect. They make their OS and software so that it's even
worse than the K/M/C interface and/or sloppy hardware. Works OK for
~90% desktop users and Dell, who have low expectations to begin with.
I've yet to find but a few situations that weren't solved by upgrading
the chair or changin frequencies (yep, your computer is just a
different kind'a radio set). With Linux you can change channels at
 will.

 YMMV

This only confirms that most of the users are fools like me, and that Linux
needs to be fool proof. There is nothing wrong with Linux. The fools are the
problem. Rigby FUD says Linux is the problem. Fools will fall in love with
Linux if it becomes fool proof. Linux could do with an injection of hormones.

I like the idea of including these on the install, but making them
 optional.

Point A raises a point -- AFAICT, the md5sum on a burned CDROM is
different than the md5sum of the downloaded ISO (I've pretty well
convinced myself of this). Even worse, the md5sum *may* differ
depending on which software you use to burn it, and which options you
 choose.

I have a page on WikiLearn dedicated to learning more about these
 points:

 http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Wikilearn/Md5sumsAfterBurning

Look it over, and if you can contribute any data points or
understanding, please feel free to do it yourself as it is a wiki, or
write to the list or me and I will edit the page.

I am not familiar with the ISO format, but if the ordering of the information
inside the ISO is not standardized, then even without any padding bytes
mentioned in the WEB page you refer to, the check sum would not be
reproducible. As I said, I am not familiar with the ISO format but I am
making this inference using my early background in encryption, data
compression and error correction. The md5sum would be much more useful if the
information ordering inside the ISO is standardized (e.g. alphabetical
ordering of files and directories etc.). By the way, I am not familiar with
the md5sum either. I never looked inside it I just used it.

To do this locate the java directory which is probably /usr/java/j2re1.4.0

 copy that file to /usr/lib/netscape/plugins
Java should now work in Netscape.

 For Mozilla copy
 /usr/java/j2re1.4.0/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji140.so (or similar)
 to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

(If you know how to make symbolic links you can do that instead of copying
 the files.)

 2/ Now for Konqueror
 Install the rpm kdelinbs-nsplugins

You will then have a new entry in your konqueror settings called
 'Netscape Plugins'
Press the button 'Scan for new plugins' and java will be detected from
 Netscape/Mozilla
Do NOT select the 'scan for new plugins at startup' box. It causes problems
 loading konqueror.

3/ Finally if you want to use Java applications such as MoneyDance or Lime

Ralph,

I am having a problem with the dictionary. The spell checker flags all words

for Dictionary has the path
/usr/share/OpenOffice.org641/share/wordbook/english. That directory has the
following listing:

ls -la /usr/share/OpenOffice.org641/share/wordbook/english/

-rwxr-xr-x1 root root 517205 Dec 20 06:00 th_en_US.idx

Those are not much of a dictionary, no wonder it flags all words. Can I use
the ispell dictionary? I have the following:

ls -l /usr/lib/ispell/
total 4068
lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 17 Oct 8 04:07 american.hash -

It will not work the way you have it. You need an absolute path like my
example, not a relative path. Also, my example was for .cshrc. I am not sure
about the .bashrc equivalent.

You could also append the absolute path to your PATH environment variable
instead of using an alias.

 I must be missing something.

Ralph,

You mentioned:

Do an ./install /net if you want to use it for several users and don't
want to install a separate version in each users $HONE.

I looked at the install man pages and there was no mention of the /net
switch. The man page said it was a file copy utility, all be it a more
sophisticated one. The one I have is version 4.1. What is this install
program you have in mind?

I did the down load, the unzip, the untar and I am ready for the next step.

Thanx,

[newbie] rpms and OpenOffice.

2002-03-08 Per discussione Seedkum Aladeem

I down-loaded the openoffice-6.0.41-5mdk rpm and got the following messages
when I tried to install it on Mandrake 8.1 using the Package Manager in KDE:

rpm -U --replacepkgs /home/rpmdir/openoffice-6.0.41-5mdk.i586.rpm;echo
RESULT=$?
error: failed dependencies:
lpddaemon is needed by openoffice-6.0.41-5mdk
libstdc++3.0 = 3.0.4-1mdk is needed by openoffice-6.0.41-5mdk
libgcc_s.so.1 is needed by openoffice-6.0.41-5mdk
libstdc++.so.3   is needed by openoffice-6.0.41-5mdk
libgcc_s.so.1(GLIBC_2.0) is needed by openoffice-6.0.41-5mdk
RESULT=1

I do not have a clue as to where to get these rpm packages. I tried
www.rpmfind.net and a few of the ftp sites shown on the Mandrake web site
without success. Can somebody please give me a hint?

By the way, because OpenOffice uses Java 2 run time environment, I
uninstalled kaffe and installed the j2re from the SUN web site. I hope this
is not a dumb move.

Does OpenOffice support unicode and right to left languages. I hope it does.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Ralph,

I used the www.rpmfind.net site to search for openoffice. The site kept
timing out today. I do not have the URL unfortunately. There was only one
site with the i586 rpm out of a total of 4 sites. I do not know what kind of
directroy the rpm came from (contrib or not). I just clicked on the file name
not knowing where it resided.

I followed your advice today and told the KDE Software Manager to search the
LM 8.1 CD ISO files too. I got the following error messages this time:

rpm -U --replacepkgs /home/rpmdir/openoffice-6.0.41-5mdk.i586.rpm;echo
RESULT=$?
error: failed dependencies:
lpddaemon is needed by openoffice-6.0.41-5mdk
libstdc++3.0 = 3.0.4-1mdk is needed by openoffice-6.0.41-5mdk
libstdc++.so.3   is needed by openoffice-6.0.41-5mdk
RESULT=1

Will the rpm package manager be able to keep track of Open Office the way it
is able to keep track of rpm packages if I use this tarball thing you have
used?

I think Open Office needs Java for the help menus. Do you have help menus?

Thanks,

Seedkum

Or you can define an alias in your shell rc file. This way you can start
openoffice from the command line.

For csh the line would go in the .cshrc file in your home directory and it

 I had an NT4 NTFS partition (~1.9 Gig) and a FAT32 partition (~1.9 Gig).
I used Harddrake to delete both of them and create a single FAT32

saw a size of only ~1.9 Gig! Rebooting did not remove the discrepancy
between Harddrake and Konqueror. Harddrake showed no empty (unused)

Hi,

You are probably using DHCP and your router is probably configured as
the DHCP server. If that is the case then your router will cause the
update of the resolv.conf file every tim you boot. make sure that the
router is configured correctly. When you do that, the router will update
the resolv.conf file with the correct information every time you reboot
and you will not have to play with the resolv.conf file any mmore.

again. I suspect that somewhere in the dungeons of Mandrake a script,
launched during the Linux start sequence, is responsible for this. I have

process/script can be responsible for this? Many thanks. Evertb

Re: [newbie] Pentium IV

2001-11-02 Per discussione Seedkum Aladeem

Hi,

No doubt. Usually if you have no bottleneck limitations, when you up the
MGHz with the same architecture you get better speed of program
execution. AMD apparently has better architecture and they are planning
to introduce products working at higher speed. They were planning to
move to copper technology, intel has already done that but I have not
heard that AMD has done so yet. I expect that when AMD uses copper
technology, like intel, the advantage of their superior architecture
will become obvious again. AMD will clobber intel (if AMD survives till
then).

hear AMD will soon follow suit in regards to upping clock speeds, but at the
same time attempting to break new ground in some of the limitations in doing
so with their current roadmap. In other words, trying to woo customers with
fancy numbers that DO mean something. :^) Just a rumor so far though.

Personally speaking you're way better off with an Athlon system. Intel
brought out the IV far too quickly IMHO and from reading others' comments,
they really botched the design. Athlons of a lower clock frequency can
easily outperform higher-clocked IVs, and the Athlon is a far cheaper
solution. The downside - you have to get a different mb for the Athlon,
but that's probably true of the IV as well. Durons are cheaper still, but
the lack of the extra cache that the Athlon provides can stall things.

[newbie] Installing LM 8.1 from HD.

2001-10-05 Per discussione Seedkum Aladeem

Hi,

I have LM 8.0 on my machine together with Bill's NT4.0. I wanted to do a
clean install of LM 8.1 because I had problems with LM 8.0. I had no
success. I outline the steps of the attempted hard disk install below.
Can someone please tell me where I goofed?

1) I used NT4.0 to download the following three files onto an ntfs
partition:
Mandrake81-cd1-inst.i586.iso
Mandrake81-cd2-ext.i586.iso
Mandrake81-cd3-supp.i586.iso

2) I mounted those files as virtual CDs on NT4.0 and copied their
contents out onto regular ntfs directories on an ntfs partition. The
directory names were the same as the file names in (1).

3) I used the rawwritewin.exe in the resulting directory tree named
Mandrake81-cd1-inst.i586.iso to create a boot floppy disk. I gave
rawwritewin.exe the hd.img as a parameter. The boot floppy got created
without error messages.

4) Then I tried to reboot from the floppy. I got the message the the
boot has failed and to remove the floppy.

What could be wrong?

Thanx,

Seedkum

Re: [newbie] Resolver problem.

2001-08-07 Per discussione Seedkum Aladeem

Hi,

Through my efforts to find a way around the problem, I tried to
re-install mdk 8.0 several times. The last time I re-installed mdk linux
8.0 I used w*ndo*s NT, that happened to be on another hard disk on the
same machine, to delete all the linux partitions and not just the /
partition and the /usr partition. At that stage the hard disk dedicated
to Linux was empty and had no partitions. I did nothing to the first
disk because I was assuming that all of linux was on the second disk
dedicated to it. All of the linux that was on the first disk was the
LILO, or so I thought. I have had to re-install several times and I
always told install to use the second hard disk for linux. I always used
expert to define and select partitions on the second hard disk.

When I was installing mdk 8.0 the last time, all the install went
smoothly except the following:

1) MKD install asked me to select from the D*S partition or the NT
partition to format. I was surprised about that because those were
already formatted with FAT16 and NTFS. I never had this selection in my
countless previous re-installs.

2) I was not asked to give the IP of the DNS! I was waiting for this pop
up menu because the DNS was what I had problems with to begin with.

3) I found that mdk used the same DNS IP I mistakenly gave it the first
time I installed it! But, where did it come from? I had all the previous
Linux partitions deleted and new ones created. The mdk must be reading
this incorrect DNS IP from the NT or D*S partitions all the time! I
never told it to install anything in those!

Can someone please tell me what is going on? Where is the resolver file?
I would like to edit it once and for all. I always had the file
/etc/resolv.conf and it was always on the Linux hard drive. This file
always had the same DNS IP address no matter what I did in all of the
re-installs. I have had to edit it every time after re-installed or
re-booted.

Re: [newbie] Resolver problem.

2001-08-06 Per discussione Seedkum Aladeem

Hi,

Because of the resolver problem and other problems, I have decided to
try version 7.2 instead of 8.0.

I have D*S and W*ndo*s NT4.0 installed on the machine. I need to keep
those UNFORTUNATELY :( I am going to take the following two steps to
uninstall
mdk 8.0 and install mdk 7.2 instead:

1) Use NT to delete all the linux partitions.
2) Use mdk 7.2 install to create the required linux partitions and
install mdk 7.2

There is an issue with LILO, however. Currently, with 8.0 installed,
LILO lets me boot DOS instead of linux and from there I get B*ll Gates
boot menu from which I chose NT or DOS boot. Now when I take step (1)
above and without doing fdisk /mbr LILO stays there and it still works
for booting the D*S and W*ndo*s. I am hesitant to try fdisk /mbr
because doing that will allow me to boot D*S and I am not sure I will
get the b*ll Gates menu selection that allows me to boot NT instead of
D*S.

DO I have to do fdisk /mbr before installing 7.2? What would be the
repercussions if I did not? If I do have to do fdisk /mbr, how will I
be able to boot D*S or NT without LILO?

Thanx,

Hi,

I installed Mandrake 8.0 using incorrect DNS server dot quad IP
addresses. I used the Linuxconf KDE gui to reconfigure it. It worked
fine until I rebooted the system. On rebooting, the DNS setting reverted
back to the old incorrect setting I gave on initial install. How do I
make the system do permanent changes to DNS configuration?

Thanx,

Seedkum

Hi,

I tried editing the file /etc/resolv.conf manually but the result was
exactly the same as when Linuxconf did it. What could be the problem?

I did find / -name resolv.conf -print and only /etc/resolv.conf got
printed out!
I have an internet connection through a Linksys switch/router and a
cable modem. During install, Linux detected eth0 automatically and I
selected LAN connection. Later on in the install I gave it incorect DNS
IP.

Ayoub

[newbie] Mandrake 8.0 updating Encryption Key.

2001-08-01 Per discussione Seedkum Aladeem

Hi,

I am trying to update my installation and I do not know what to do with
the encryption key on the mandrake down load pages. Can someone
enlighten me please?

The down load instructions say I have to have a password to use any of
the ftp sites. I tried to use anonymous for use name and then I gave
my email address for the password. That did not work. What should I do?

Thanx,

Seedkum
