Hi, I've been using a scanmaker 4 at work and it scans prints and slides fine, but when i try to scan negatives it puts and aweful yellow colour cast on the image. Colour-presentation revisited (Canon FD vs. Pentax SMC)
Good day to all of you who entered - much to my surprise and joy - into the lively dialogue that my inital letter brought forth some three weeks ago (beginning on June 19th) . Sorry for not being able to do this little report earlier but in the meantime I had some other things on my mind. Hope you remember the thread. First: It seems that the matter about how to measure colour differences between 'lens families' (Canon FD and Pentax SMC) turns out to be a LITTLE too complicated for me to be able to reach final conclusions - at least not in the more scientific sense. The variables that (among others) William put into perspective were a few too many to have them all controlled for. However, the whole shutter-reliance matter is noted (that is: the shorter times used for exposures, the more probable it is that between two camera's there might be unwanted differences). Longer times are easier to control for. Second: On second scrutiny of the slides made in the Hardanger Vidda I observed some important aspects that led to different colour-presentations: 1. I used more often the 'wrong' moments for photographing (pouring rain, water on lens and oculair etc. while my friend refrained from pushing buttons at this moments). 2. My friend extensively used his 17 mm/3.5 - thereby having actually less distance to subjects (that do seem to be farther away) which means less air and humidity, fog and rain between lens and subject, resulting in more saturation in colour in comparison to my slides which were taken for the greatest part with 85/1.8 which meant much more distance to the subjects (people in environment). On our experiment: The slides shot side by side were deliberately NOT taken in an absolute controlled environment like proposed. Personally I prefer to work from out of a pragmatic Good is that what works out well stance. That means that we chose to go citywards with both camera's (Canon EF and Pentax MX) and shooting same things (very diverse in themes and content and colours) from the same perspective. What we did is: 1. coming to an exposure combination which we agreed upon (independently we measured much of the time one and the same exposure - when not we averaged both); 2. Having films (Velvia, taken from the same emulsion number = the same batch) developed at the same lab; 3. Subjectively give opinions about results of the colour, warmth (and light fall-off or lack of it) on the basis of viewing the slides on a standard evenly lit light table through a viewer and later when projecting the slides (Leitz Pradovit 153 with 90/2.5 Colorplan lens). Conclusions Part I (28mm/f2.0 FD versus 28mm/2.8A SMC): 1. First check was on the light-table. The SMC slides seemed to present more brighter colours. Overall the saturation looked pretty much the same between the Canon and Pentax shots giving a rough indication that the exposure was at about the same. 2. Striking difference was the absence of light fall-off of the Canon FD lens. There was a remarkable homogenious projection without any unevenness in projecting the slides. Of course the SMC lost most of his (or her) light fall-of when stopping down but in general it remained more visible in the pictures of the SMC. Actually I feel the SMC has to be stopped down towards 5.6 (better still 8.0!) to begin to resemble the same 'egality' of the FD ones. To be honest 2.8 should be avoided at all costs in my opinion (unless there is no alternative of course). 3. Sharpness was also noticable higher in case of the FD lens. Details were just a bit more defined. Also the sharpness towards the corners was better with the FD. It seemed to me that the FD maintained a more flat field of focus than my SMC-A. 4. Colours were brighter with the SMC. The colours of the FD slides were somewhat subdued in comparison - the SMC slides had more brightness and turned out to be warmer in colour-presentation. Those who remember my previous observations will know that this concerned my original question and as such this is a strange result. It has to be mentioned that I did not use my 28mm in Norway while my friend did. But I don't think that there will be much difference between colour-presentations within the Pentax range of lenses (I have never felt the 28mm did different colours than the other lenses I own). We think it will be fun to compare our 50/1.4 (FD and SMC-A) lenses with each other too, as well as our 135/(2.8 and 2.5) etc., so if there are some of you interested in this experiment, please let me know, in that case I'll bother to do a little report of our own subjective evaluation - we will do the shooting anyway. For now it's unsure if there are slight differences in exposure between our camera's resulting in differences in saturation (which can be small but - as I appreciate by now (I did learn a lot from this experiment) - causing important differences in colour-brightness). At least lab differences are ruled out as well as film variation differences for both our

The original Asshiflex (M37) which also appeared with an M42 mount and a later M42 version. The earlier one had a rectangular black tripod mount, the later one a smaller, round silver one. I've got the early one in m42, but like the later 500 f4.5, the mount is on a tube that disconnects to allow filters to be screwed on.. Two elements only. Big (500mm long). Heavy. I haven't used it much so can't comment on performance, and I don't have any other 500's to compare with. RE: OT Lyme tick info wanted
Hi, Ann. I showed your image to one of the doctors where I work (there's about 50 of them here), and his conclusion is that it looks suspicious enough to justify a trip to your doctor. For my own record as a biologist I would like to fill in a bit about ticks in general. Forgive me if I state things obvious. The tick is a small mite (remotely related to spiders) that sucks blood from mammals. There are several species, but I think most of them are 2-4mm long to begin with. When full of blood, however, they become larger than green peas; up to 15mm. They climb trees or other vegatation and sit idle in the canopy until some warm-blooded animal comes around. They sense the body heat and let themselves drop onto their prey. The bite itself is less of a nuisance than eg. a mosquito bite. However, the tick bite can carry a small parasite; a bacteria called Borrelia, which belongs to the same group of bacteria as eg. syfilis (Spirochaetae). The percentage of ticks carrying the disease can vary from place to place. In Norway the range is between 3% and 20%; which means the risk of catching Borrelia varies from 1:30 to 1:5. A borrelia infection usually starts with a local swelling up to a couple of days after the bite. It starts at the bite and usually spread like rings on a water surface. The bite itself remains red like on your picture. The swelling will disappear after a while, and in most cases this means that your body has fought the infection itself. In some cases, however, the bacteria spread to other organs, notably the muscles and the meninges (the membranes that encapsulate the brain and spinal chord). This condition is called chronic borreliosis and is quite serious. If I have got it right, one doesn't know the full extent of long-term consequences of chronic borreliosis. Because of the risk of chronic borreliosis, it is common to treat the local signs of infection too. Borrelia is easily killed with normal antibiotics, but I don't know how long you have to be on medication. Consulting a doctor is probably worth the trouble if in doubt. Hope this helps, and thanks for reading. Re: 18% Gray (again)
Interesting. I too have found that foliage, trees, mountains, which are all typical of an Ansel Adams photograph, are very close to 18%. On the other hand, typical caucasian skin is at about zone VI or 13%. And since most cameras are used to take snapshots of the rug rats, a meter calibrated to that value serves the average point and shooter quite well. Paul Tom Rittenhouse wrote: Gee whizz, wowie! Well I must be old then because I do remember why 18% was chosen. Go out and meter a field of foliage and compare that to your gray card reading. Average reflectance of scenes is 18% If you meter that as 13% reflectance you will over expose it. It is simple the average scene reflects 18% of the light that hits it. It is not an arbitrary value. It is a fact of the real world out there. As for Ansel Adams 12.5% would give zone VI, so 13% would fit the zone system exactly. However, photography goes back 160 years, according to you guys no one knew what they were doing for the first 159 of them. You quote Shutterbug to me as proof that I and every one else have been doing it wrong for all those years. As for checking my meters, the four of them are with in 1/3 stop of each other, and the incident meter matches the reflected reading from a gray card. BTW, why does an incident light dome for a meter transmit 18% of the light? I have heard that meters, especially built in meters, are calibrated with a 4 stop neutral density filter from a calibrated standard bulb. That explains why they would say their meter is calibrated to 13$, but that does not change the average reflectance of the real world. What that means is that the meter is off by a certain percentage for all exposures made with it even when you use an accurate metering technique. I had thought that the film manufactures were being optimistic about their film speeds but the fact that adjusting the film speed that same percentage gives excellent exposures tends to indicate the meters are in fact off by that much. --Tom - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Frank, Yes, there is... 1st step - buy a Spotmatic with 50mm. 2nd step - buy a 28mm 3rd step - buy a 135mm 4th step - buy a 50mm Macro 5th step - buy a 300mm (but it was such a bargain) 6th step - buy a screwmount bellows Gosh, I screwed up. I bought my Spotmatic with the now infamous 300/3.5 Rexatar and substituted a 200mm at step 4. Also, my screwmount autobellows included a slide copier and cost an outrageous $50.00 USD for both. I saw the for sale sign on the shelf at one of the camera shops and it had already been sold. It was still there, so I got a look at it. It didn't unduly worry me that it had been sold, I need a new printer more than a fisheye lens. A friend picked up a mint M 300/4 for about $150 yesterday and had the bragging rights today. I offered him $200 for it but he said nononono it has red backs in it, fungus, rabies, and it bites. Not only is the camera in stock but the price has dropped from $899.95 to $874.95! By my reckoning, that's about 625 British Pounds, which just confirms my sickening feeling that the pricing of all things photographic here in the UK continues to be artificially inflated when there are all sorts of noises about how moves are afoot to regain some sort of equilibrium. The cheapest I've seen the MZ-S advertised in the UK is about 799 Pounds (body only). That's well over a thousand US bucks. WHY? Can anyone please tell me why I should pay hundreds more for the same thing here in Britain, supposedly well and truly ensconced in 'the First World', than counterparts in the USA? Belated PUG comments
Hi all, Meant to do this earlier this month, but the time got away from me. First comment--the gallery itself is a work of art this month. Vigorous pplause for the person or persons responsible for the deft and sensitive arrangement. A half dozen of my favorites for this month: Ken Waller's Ice Flower--superb, easy to see why it is a winner John Cohen's VLA at Sunset--accident or not, very nice Eric Platt's Run to the Sea--I wish I could see it full size! Steve Bowman's Day Dreamer--beautiful portrait, very sensitive Ollen Mullis' Shadows at Play--too cool--great vision Karoly Kovacs' Sounds of Silence--the framing bothers me a little, but the incomplete violin and the mute head are intriguing (to say the least) Many other good ones in the gallery as well! Re: Colour-presentation revisited (Canon FD vs. Pentax SMC)
I think colour palette matters much to people in photographs and preferences are highly subjective; the simplest proof is how much people argue and differ on prints made on papers by various brands: some prefer saturated greens of Fuji paper while others find them unacceptable and artificial; there are people who praise "natural" colours of Agfa paper while others find them dull etc. I would be interested in hearing from you on any results of your future "comparative studies" Cheers Jarek Hugo wrote: So do people in general tend to judge a picture more on the basis of colours than on other aspects like sharpness? - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. RE: Flash question.
Using an RTF indoors would be my last resort - only if it provided the only means to take a picture. I sometimes - though quite rarely - use an RTF for fill-in outdoors, but solely with lenses that are small in size and this limits the choice to primes in the 28 - 85 range or short standard zooms. "Peifer, William [OCDUS]" [EMAIL PROTECTED] napisa / wrote: Jim Apilado wrote: [Questions about use of RTF vs. external flash...] I can see where an external flash would be recommended for the long zoom.I'm not sure about whether to leave a hood on the other two lenses when shooting with the built-in flash. What are your experiences? Hi Jim, I've had occasion recently to shoot people from distances of 60 feet or so at 135mm and 210mm. Even with an external flash, I find that my subjects show a lot of red-eye if they're looking in the general direction of the camera. The problem is worse at greater subject distances, since the angle of parallax (i.e., camera lens to subject's eye to flash head) becomes progressively smaller. Your decision is going to depend on what you shoot. Generally, I don't like to use the built-in flash at all, even for "normal" focal lengths, if I'm shooting people indoors or under low-light conditions. Only if I have to, and only if I set it to the pre-flash (red-eye reduction) mode. The external flash units are just a lot more versatile for my tastes, and you can create a lot more depth in your scene -- as well as a lot softer illumination -- by properly bouncing the output off walls, ceilings, and so forth. The built-in flash would probably be reasonable for fill- flash if the output is properly compensated. I just haven't had occasion to do much of that. Hope this helps. Best is Cameras-at-lowest-prices.com who want £640! Rob That's much more like it! Okay, I didn't do my research very well, did I blush. Even so, you have to hunt about to find outlets like this. Jessops at £699 is slightly more palatable, but 650 would be better. I suppose these numbers will fall. I still haven't seen anything close to the £540 I paid for my Sigma 70-200 2.8 (B+H in NYC) over here - £599 I think was the closest. A lot of £720s and so forth. There's no excuse for that! Re: 18% Gray (again)
I am the one who argues that this 13% thing is bull. Take your incident meter and meter a gray card in reflected mode. Then take an incident mode reading. The readings will be the same. If the meter was calibrated for 13% gray the readings would be different because that dome is definitely 18% transmitance. No, Herbert Klepper had an article in Modern Photography back sometime in the seventies is seems like that had the 13% bs in it and every one who pretends to be and expert has continue that erroneous bs since. If I hadn't wanted to build a meter checker for myself and found out about the 8x ND filter used to bring the reference bulb down to the proper level to place the meter cell in the center of its I might have gone for it. In fact I almost did this time before I actually read Bob Shell's sidebar about this and remembered. As for the regrets Paul mentions, Caucasian skin is one stop brighter than 18% e.g. 36% not the other way around. I find it interesting that all the exposure fanatics over all the years before someone found out that all the exposure meters in the world were off by a half a stop never noticed that. Not even back in the days when film barely had the exposure latitude to cover a half stop error. Of course you guys can believe what you want, but you are still comparing apples to oranges as I said in my Ah ha post. Believe me, with modern film you won't notice a half stop error. --Tom [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Let me see if I understand. Cameras are calibrated for 13 percent. 13 percent is darker than 18 percent. So, if you meter from a 18 percent graycard, the meter will try to make it darker, then you increase the exposure by a third or half stop. I'm doing it right? Re: Next 'Limited' Lens Due?
A Pentax employee told me that there will be a FA 18/2.8 Limited. I got the impression that this was the next Limited lens although it wasn't explicitly said. What was said was that it would be released at a later date than the 31 Limited. It was also said that they didn't have the existence of this lens in writing yet. Sombody posted here that there will be a 23/1.9 Limited. I have no idea about the validity of this rumor. It was said that a Pentax photographer had gotten one for testing. For what its worth, both the 77 Limited and the black 43mm was spotted long before release by people observing Pentax photographers. Anyway, a Limted series consiting of a 18/2.8, 23/1.9, 31/1.8, 43/1.9, and 77/1.8 makes a lot of sense to me. Pål - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re[2]: 18% Gray (again)
Hi, this assumes that most camera users are white, which is a highly dubious assumption given that most people are not white. It would be commercial suicide to base meter calibration on any particular skin colour. If it's true that white skin is about 13% then I'd suggest it's probably coincidence. I've just metered by own skin - typically N. European with a slight suntan - and compared it against an 18% grey card. No appreciable difference. --- Bob mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Friday, July 13, 2001, 11:02:57 AM, you wrote: Interesting. I too have found that foliage, trees, mountains, which are all typical of an Ansel Adams photograph, are very close to 18%. On the other hand, typical caucasian skin is at about zone VI or 13%. Cheese curds themselves are made, I believe, as an intermediate step in the cheesemaking process They're new cheese, before it's pressed and cut into blocks. Indeed. Take some milk, and separate it somehow (usually by adding rennet). The curds are the lumpy bits that will be moulded into blocks to be sold as cheese after some amount of aging. The liquid that is left behind is the whey. So now you know what curds and whey is. Would you eat it? - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Info about PDML Location Survey
If you're new to the list or just haven't seen the geography poll before, here's how it works. I'm asking every member of the PDML (Pentax Discuss Mailing List... this thing you're reading now g) to mail me their city, state/province and country so that I can complile the information in a list. For security reasons, I will post a general summary to the PDML and will mail the detailed info directly to the participants. The general summary will be a list of how many PDML members are in each state/province or country. No names or e-mail addresses will be attached to this summary, as it will eventually wind up in the online PDML archives. The detailed info will consist of your name, city, state/province, country and e-mail address in the following format: Canada, Manitoba, Winnipeg; Chris Brogden [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you don't want to include your city, that's fine; just let me know. I will mail the detailed info directly to the participants, so it will not be posted on the PDML or wind up on a web page somewhere. This way, only those PDML members who are sharing their info with you will have access to yours. Hopefully this info will help us to appreciate the truly international flavour of the PDML and will faciliate contacting other members. If you're taking a trip somewhere and have questions about your destination, you can see who lives there and e-mail them directly. If you want to arrange a get-together with other people from a region, you have their contact info at a glance. There have been a few meetings of PDML members already, which have apparently been a lot of fun, and I hope that this info makes it easier for meetings like this to happen. If you're interested in submitting your location for the list, or want to change the info you've already sent to me, or just have questions about the project, please e-mail me *off-list* at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I'll get right on it. Don't just hit reply to this message, as it will go to the list, not to me. I'll try to mail out an update to this info near the middle of every month, unless there have been no changes to it. Re: 18% Gray (again)
Tom R. exploded: I am the one who argues that this 13% thing is bull. Tom, Actually it's not. The ANSI standard is around 12% and a lot of manufacturers use 13%. Of course, as with film speed, the manufacturers do what they want to do, so many of them do calibrate to 18%. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them have enough tolerance built into their calibrations that they VARY from 12% to 18%! g Just because you get two meters to agree with each other doesn't mean all other meters are like those two. Try comparing a Nikon and a Contax meter, for instance. As I said before, Ctein has tested this and reported his findings in his book. His original source was Dick Dickerson, who is just a wee tad more authoritative than Bob Shell--Dick oversaw the development of the T-Max films, Polymax papers and chemicals, the Kodak chromogenic film, and Xtol, among other things. You want me to ask Dick about it? Or Ctein? I will if you want. The thing is, I really think that since Ctein went to all the trouble to write it all down in his book, the least we can do is give him the courtesy of going to read about it there, instead of asking him to rewrite it again in an individualized e-mail. But I'll ask him if you'd like me to. His book is called _Post Exposure_, Focal Press (www.bh.com), ISBN 0-240-80299-3. The whole book is well worth having. --Mike P.S. Re: TC--I am frowning!
I just compared most of my teleconverters, so I could choose which ones to use with my 300/2.8. The best two were fine wide open. They became excellent one stop down from wide open. The TC's were tested on a Tokina 300/2.8 AT-X manual focus lens. Note: none of them except the Albinar caused any vignetting or significant light fall-off in the corners. Here's my impressions: Excellent: Kiron 2x (MF) Pentax 1.7x AF Adapter Good: Kenko 1.5x AF Promaster (Kenko) 1.7x AF Not so good unless stopped to f8: Kiron 1.5x (MF) Unacceptable (serious barrel distortion) Albinar 2x Macro Focusing TC Note: The excellent Pentax XL convertors won't fit this lens. Darn. I heard good things about the Kiron 2x manual focus teleconvertor, so when I had a chance to get one recently, I did. It is even better than I expected. It was the best TC of the lot, slightly better than the Pentax 1.7x AF Adapter. I believe this Kiron 2x TC rivals any K-mount manual focus TC out there, except for the Pentax XL series. The Pentax 1.7x AF Adaptor was good at f2.8, very good at f4, and excellent at f5.6. After being impressed with the Kiron 2x TC, I had high hopes for the Kiron 1.5x TC. But I was disappointed. The 1.5x is probably matched well to some lens, but it's sure not this Tokina 300/2.8. The el-cheapo Promaster 1.7x AF TC ran a close third in the tests. But it loses so much light that it hunts in AF mode on my F* 300/4.5, so I stick with the Kenko 1.5x for an AF teleconvertor. As for the original poster's problem with out-of-focus images, I would think that any TC that gives exceedingly soft images should be tested further to isolate the problem. Even a bad TC should not cause completely out-of-focus images unless there is some alignment or other mechanical problem somewhere in the lens/TC/camera system. -- Happy Trails, Texdance http://members.fortunecity.com/texdance http://members1.clubphoto.com/john8202 - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Right-angle Finder?
Yup; the Varimagni fits perfectly. I suggest you try out a demo before buying one; this finder creates an inverted image which is a little disturbing at first. Or do all right-angled finders do this? RK Peifer, William [OCDUS] wrote: I read in an astrophotography book I have that the Olympus Vari-Magni finder will fit the K1000. If this is the case, then I believe it would not fit the PZ-1p. Perhaps if one could find a scale drawing (or photo) of the back of an Olympus OM-1 body, one could then determine the viewfinder window dimensions and compare to corresponding Pentax K or M and later viewfinder windows? Or perhaps someone on the list has an OM-1? - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. When comparing to US prices, remember we have to pay state and local taxes at the time of sale. In my area it's 8.5% added to the purchase price. But we don't have to pay Texas sales tax when buying by mail order, unless the mail-order company has offices in Texas. So I buy from out-of-state mail-order firms quite often to save the 8.5% tax. Several years ago I was involved with a group of friends from Switzerland. The got together once a year and came to the US to vacation and to buy clothes. Re: My First Impressions on the MZ-S
Your lens apertures are getting sticky. They need to be CLA'd. The diaphragm should snap into the same position every time and the opening shouldn't change size depending on how fast or slow the diaphragm is moving. Even cheep lenses shouldn't behave this way. At 07:11 PM 7/11/2001 -0500, you wrote: Interesting. It could also be a problem they fixed with the ZX series cameras, or maybe they are all supposed to do that and my camera is busted. Another possibility is that it has something to do with the meter inaccuracy problems with the PZ-1p, matrix metering, and A lenses? Something simular that I have noticed with my older cameras, like the KX, is that the lens will stop down differently depending on how fast I push the DOF lever down. If I do it slow, it will be wider than if I push it fast. It seems to stop down the same if I push it down fast and when the camera fires the shutter, so I am not too concerned. This is most evident on the A 50mm F1.4 and a Sears 135mm. Maybe the PZ-1p's aperture lever is stopping the lens down more slowly when the lens is set to A than it does when an aperture is selected by the aperture ring? I did have my Z-1p checked by Pentax when I was in Australia few years ago. Unfortunately, the guy said the camera was perfectly okay and gave me an unfriendly look (felt like I was making something up). Since my recent Z-1p has exactly the same problem (or not a problem at all), I don't think my Z-1ps (2 in total) were an insolated case. regards, Alan Chan _ - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. MX mirror not swinging back into place below 1/250th
Hi I've just won an MX with a Pentax M f1.4 lense at an auction for the sum-total of US$33.95 (including shipping), but it has one problem with it and I'm hoping someone on the list can enlighten me as to what might be wrong with it. I originally won the camera at $59.95 (including shipping) but on a last-minute check the seller found there was a problem with it (contrary to the advertised description), and offered it to me at the reduced price, which I have accepted. I don't have the camera yet, and the seller has advised me that the mirror is not swinging back into place correctly at speeds slower than 1/250. Could this be the same sort of problem as the LX's sticky mirror problem, or might this be something else. How expensive would it be to service an MX? Any reflections would be appreciated. Also please note that I receive the digest form of this list so if you could cc me on your reply to the list then that would be great. Thanx Nicole PS I've just scanned in my photocopied SuperProgram owner's manual, so if someone could offer a WWW site for me to put it onto then I'd be happy to make it available. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: 18% Gray (again)
Well, Mike, even if the meters are setup for a 13% gray, and I still doubt that because as I have said my Sekonic 308 gives the same reading with light reflected for an 18% gray card as it does in incident mode, all you have to do is reduce your ASA by that amount and use 18% because all that is affected by that is where the calculator scale is set relative to the meter reading . The meter calibration is actually done as I have describe here several times. BTW is the difference between 13% and 18% 1/3 stop or is it 1/2 stop? (I don't have a scientific calculator any more). --Tom Mike Johnston wrote: Tom R. exploded: I am the one who argues that this 13% thing is bull. --Mike P.S.
