RE: [RCSE] Pumpkin Fly, what was the other event...
I had family in town from AZ, could not make the event... They dragged me to the boats in Indiana for gambling 'fix' - my question is what was the full size fly-in going on around Cinci? We were driving back on 275 around 2 on Sunday, and we saw a 3 plane formation where literally you could have jumped from one wingtip to the other, this was quickly followed by what I took as an AT-6. The first formation was so odd that I initially thought the middle plane was having problems, although I am not sure what I thought the other ships could do. The Texan looked too out of place not to be going to a show. Just curious, anyone?Brent
RE: [RCSE] stuck on mandrel
I had this happen once doing wing joiner tubes for the Allegro; I finally got the fiberglass tube off the mandrel by running it under an InSinkerator hot water dispenser here at work. I think you could do the same with either HOT tap water or water from a tea kettle. I don't know if it loosened up the epoxy, melted the wax, or both - it did save me from having to cut into the glass and mandrel to start over again. Good luck, Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Midwest flyers - who took advantage of the wind?
I'm just curious - who else went out yesterday and did any sloping in that wind?? We hit a local dam that is usually just ok, and it 45+ it was epic. I dragged my brother and two other locals out, made my brother fly his (previously) immaculate HalfPipe 48, shared my HP and a heavier M60 with a non-sloping DART, and I broke out the much heavier Bluto 56. All of it was in the wrong weight class, all of it was a blast. If you could get a launch and get 30 feet out without being blown back over your head (and into Lake Wally), you were safe for a few seconds at least. Gusts were coming in well over 50, and you can't really say you were controlling the ship all that much at that point - I watched my ship being shaken 3 feet up and down at a rate of about 3 shakes a second, really can't believe it didn't just snap. Anyway, it was wild - was just wondering if anyone else had a chance to try this out, know it was kind of a rare system for this part of the country (without snow on the ground, at least). Lift! RE: [RCSE] De-electrifying Sailplanes
You mentioned the Graphite, but a Silent Dream 2.0 - 2.5 would be a good choice, also. The nice thing about the FVK stuff is you can get electric and sailplane components; it would not be a big trick to have one set of wings and 2 fuses, one electric and one not. If nothing else, you could always get the second fuse later and only have to set up the RX, battery, and tail servos. Makes for a compact, flexible pair of planes. Just a thought, it's a good flying ship either way. Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Woodys .....
Just wanted to put this out, in the spirit of encouraging those flyers out there that still like to build. Based on the interest we received for this idea last year, the DARTS are going to run a Woody event as part of our annual Nostalgia / RES weekend contests. The Woody event will be run in parallel with the NOS event, and we would encourage these same flyers to compete in our RES event the next day. We considered the ladder format, but in the end Man on Man won out for this year's event. The calendar is still in the works until we can coordinate with the parks department, but the event is on our books. Now, what to build. Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Woodys .....
Duly noted... We just started kicking this idea around, and the reason we chose (are leaning towards?) MOM is scheduling. We want to run NOS and Woody's on the same day, and we are concerned that we'd not get in as much flying if we didn't keep the groups running. If we could do both event and run the Woody's in a ladder format, that might be interesting. There is still a chance we will schedule another Woody only event - depends on interest from other clubs and our own flyers, but your comment is NOT falling on deaf ears. This event is an experiment for us, and we're sort of feeling our way. Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Bat flying wing/ Trimming
Having caught the slope bug bad the last couple years, I have found myself trimming lots of flying wings and planks. CG is critical, true, but on a wing where the CG is close to the center of lift, you just can not have too much elevator and get good flying. If you can't conviince yourself to take it out, at least set up low rates on the elevator, see which way it flies better for you. I fly an M60, and it just flies awful if either of those are off, and it does not take much. It's worth it to read the trimming section of www.Northcountyflyingmachines.com 's website - they know their stuff. Good luck, the bat looks like a blast! Brent One of the characteristics is that if I get a half-way decent lauch out of it, it tends to start a quick porpoising like motion. RE: [RCSE] combo meet: Electric/slope
That sounds interesting, especially as the thermal season winds (wound?) down around here. I mentioned this and the Lake Wilson caravan at the DARTS planning meeting last nite, and both at drewgot some interest. I think I could make one or two runs up to the lake to fly, especially if I take the Mrs to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while there. Keep me in the loop as you pick dates (or feel like the wind's right) to fly. Brent
RE: [RCSE] slope rules / pics
If you do have some events, even just fun slope flys, please let me know - same goes for anyone in the Ohio / IN / KY / MI area. Just not that many good slope sites and opportunities to fly, hard to pass up opportunities to get out and do it. Also, ifyou are interested in a one-design, I'd look into the specs that the Lake Wilson group floated a couple years back - remember it as asingle taper, SD606x wing, some other loose specs on fuse width, but it would be cool to have some time to whip up a couple ships. Good luck getting something going, Brent
RE: [RCSE] Re: Soaring V1 #8443
I knew Mr. Voss had this answer! The Fun-1 was the ship I had in mind as the model for ODR, but I could not come up with Paul for the ODR specs - I think I'll be doing some searches tonite for those numbers, would be a fun off-season (thermal) project. Hope there are some others with the same idea, Brent
[RCSE] ... for woody contests ...
That reminds me, wanted to float this before our annual event planning meeting. Would a Woody event garner more interest than an (our) annual Nostalgia event? The NOS event has been a fixture, but it's not getting nearly the interest it used to - we are toying with going Woody this year, with a category to honor the best / top NOS ship(s). Does that sound like a more modern format that still encourages building flyers? Thanks, Brent DARTS RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] To Russ Young (obechi / foam)
Hi all, I did an obechi foam project this year, and it was not bad at all. I bought ultracoat (huge roll), it's got a good, low temp workability. You could do fiberglass and paint, but you'll kick yourself if you try ultracoat later. I just sanded it very clean, finishing up with a high grit foam block. Only trick I heard from John (Derstine) was to make sure your surface is clean before you start. I vacuumed mine and then cleaned it with a damp rag, until it stopped showing the sawdust. After that, I just covered as I would a foamie, a 200 foamie. Low heat, working right down the wing trying to smooth the covering down more than stretch it tight. I turned the heat up slightly at the LE / TE, especially when joining the top and bottom film. If you keep the iron moving and pretty low (like 20%, tops), you should be fine. Good luck! Brent [QUOTE=Russ Young] That being said, one of the remaining things I need to do is cover the wings. They are white foam with an obeche skin (about 1/16 thick). I would prefer one of the plastic coverings (Monocoat, etc.) but I'm afraid that I'll melt the foam with the iron or the heat gun. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] how high really
When I got my specs redone, I got into this discussion with my eye doc (that happened to be an ex-flight surgeon / perception researcher at Wright Patt) about flying RC sailplanes, and how I don't see that great at distance. He brought up an example about experiments with the red flag exercises in which fighter pilots did spot, identify, and shoot combat. In their experiments, the pilots were evenly matched, and the numbers suggested that the results should have been pretty even. They weren't. What they've added to the equation now is how well your eyes work together to spot and track a moving object. All these guys were great at identifying a static object at a distance, but when you put them in motion, some guys were much better than others. Just thought that was interesting, lift! B. RE: [RCSE] how high really
I got dropped off at 2,000 feet with a scale ship, all white, on a dark blue sky day... I had trouble seeing it immediately. Took about 2 minutes to (and it hurts to type this) bleed off altitude to get it where I was seeing it again. I've since gotten 'scrip sunglasses in a reddish brown to help with contrast, but it's the first time I felt like I was over 40 flying... Just glad I had spotters to keep me from getting in trouble, hope that I'm better next time out. Bill's right, it's too stressful to not see a ship, especially something that big. Who's bright idea was it to make scale ships white, any way? Makes me wish I'd installed strobes on the underside (or found clouds to get under quicker)... RE: [RCSE] DARTS SUN CONTEST
We should have Saturday's scores quickly, but it was a very tight weekend - 19 points seperated first and second for the 2 days - combined. Ron Mong took Saturday , on a day where the lift was sketchy at best. Karl Miller was the most consistent of the group, and for this weekend that's saying something - his third and second place on Saturday put him at the top for the weekend. A lot of good flying on a weekend that makes the DARTS field hard, especially if you don't like landing downhill. Thanks to all the out of towners coming in for their OVSS points - really made the contest. Only dark spots were a lost scratch built Supra* and the demise of Ray Hayes's beautiful, red Sky Bird - I thnk the dozen vultures circling over the turnarounds may have distracted him a bit at launch. Be careful launching the Allegro - it has a weakness that I've seen and heard of from a couple flyers: it's not winchproof when faced with negative G's. Just wanted to put that out there before you end up like me (currently finishing up rebuilding my Allegro's center section). My (2nd) worst habit launching is dipping too deep in the bucket trying to get more of a zoom on launch; flying in a contest, I actually broke my wing DOWN. RE: [RCSE] RE: 2M Rambles
I really wouldn't change much beyond my launch technique. If I do build another, I would be a little more careful with my spar wrapping and glueing of the center section, the centermost 6 inches in particular. I might consider adding a little more carbon in that same area if I had some thin prepreg available, inside of the bottom spar? It would just take a little sanding down of those shear webs a bit. Again, it's pretty darn tough, but avoiding a deep dip is probably a pretty good idea any way. Good luck! Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Just curious, who here is going to try their hand at the XC event this year (scale or other)...? I initially had decided on the 'bird, but then I found it was NOT NOS legal Moved it down my list behind the BD, but not much. RE: [RCSE] Servo Reversing
It's worse than that (but that's what I assumed, too)... I found this circuit diagram that shows how this done (http://www.cliftech.com/html/reverser.html). The reversing gets into the nuts and bolts of the pulses coming in on the signal wire, changing the duration of the pulses... It's a great article, if nothing else. RE: [RCSE] (Aussie 2M)...
I thought you might be surprised by its overall look, but I swear, half the reason it gets made fun of so much is because it just flies so well. It came on the scene and beat a lot of much more expensive, much prettier ships. A lot of people out there got beat by some ugly*, inexpensive planes. Most of the Mantises (Mantii?) had an MH32 airfoil (some 7037s), bagged foam with a carbon tube spar. 3 piece wing, held on with a single bolt, room in the wing mount for ballast. Phil Barnes put them out for a long time, not sure if he still does tho. There are still a lot out there, and except for the week before Nats, they're usually moderately easy to find. I flew against one of the 2 meter versions this weekend - it is strong and light, and it really handles (turns and lands) extremely well. Again, the biggest knock has always been how they look. Good luck, hope you find something good - Brent *I always mean the fuse pod / wing mount - the wings always looked like they longed to be on another ship. -Original Message- From: David Leigh [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, July 12, 2006 2:09 PM To: soaring@airage.com Cc: David Leigh Subject: RE: [RCSE] (Aussie 2M)... RE: [RCSE] Old DJ Aero Monarch 2M...
We had our annual 2M event Sunday, and one of the guys had an old Monarch (early model) out - it flew good as hell. It launched hard, hung great, turned on a dime, great landing ship - it really was competitive (flying against Gnomes, SuperVs, and Organics). I had a later model (C or D?), and it was not quite the same ship, but I certainly wouldn't turn my nose up at the one I timed for this weekend. B. RE: [RCSE] More info on the electric motor/esc issue
I just wonder about running a BEC on a high amp setup, especially something on more than 7 cells. My (limited) understanding of the BEC tells me that you're really leaving yourself with very little in the cells when the BEC finally shuts off the motor. I'm not familiar with the BEC you're using in your setup, but I never could get my Schulze controller to work without a seperate power supply. The servos, yes - the motor, no. [RCSE] Hardcore NOS
Tto borow a phrase from a fellow poster, I pity the fool who wasn't flying Nostalgia with the DARTS in Dayton today Blue skies, mostly light winds, and great to non-existent lift conditions made for a challenging event. We got in 7 rounds of 10 minute tasks, could have flown much more. The air was such that we had more 10 minutes winners than not - NOT the norm for our Nostalgia events this time of year. No carnage, either; again, NOT the norm. Many flyers went from zeros to heroes in one round (and vice versa (me)). 1 power line (no sparks), 2 off field landings, and one flapping Mirage made for some good entertainment. After a tightly contested event where it seemed everyone had a black mark on their cards, Don Harris showed why he's earned so many Ohio's Cups. He also became the new poster boy for the Gulf Coaster* earning commission on at least one sale today and a modeling gig for Skybench. Much thanks go out to the Indy flyers that made the tip; we had more out of Dayton flyers than locals - you all made the contest. RE: [RCSE] Observations from the 2006 JR Aerotow
I made the run out yesterday, just finished posting some pics on RCGroups... First time at JR, have to say they know how to run an event. Only complaint is that it's not closer and more frequent. Like every other weekend g. Disappointed that I didn't get shots of the 40% ASW-28 in the Illini Hangar; that's about the most impressive ship I saw all day. If there were a book on that build, I'd buy it and keep it by my desk to remind myself why I got into scale. That's after shooting 2+ rolls of film: I still felt like I missed a dozen classic ships. Amazing lift on Friday, spent a good part of my first flight trying to bleed off altitude in a ship without spoilers - if anyone has any suggestions there, I'm wide open. Tried crow, but that seemed to build up speed quickly, maybe my compensation is off? High class problems, I think that's called. Jim's right - if you have time to make it out, worth it - with or without a plane. Bring a camera, tho, you will want to show what you saw. Thanks JR! OK, Im suddenly in the market for a 2M ship for the 2 contests a year it will see action I can not bring myself to spend more that about 200 bucks, so that limits me. What are your thoughts on Ed Whyte's Cara? DJA's updated 2M Chrysalis? The 2M Bird? I throw the 'Bird in there after going to Muncie yesterday - that seemed to be the club ship. Downside to that is that I'd really rather build the 100 version, don't really want multiples. Any other choices? Are Ducks much out of that range? The DARTS club is having a mini hi-start (hlg) contest on May 13th. This is not on our normal events list, but we wanted to get a warmup in before our annual 2 day event. We'll robably start flying about 10am. There are no restrictions on what you can fly as long as a mini hi-start can launch it. Tasks will be set so it will not require you to be a marathon runner to compete. This is a good opportunity to blow the dust off your old hlg. Bring your dlg also, if numbers are sufficient we can also run some standard hlg rounds. Also, if you have anything you'd like to see at an event like this, let me know - this is meant to be a fun event, so we're pretty open. RE: [RCSE] Re: Initial CG on a scratch ship...
Thanks to all that gave me info on coming up with the CG last week - much appreciated. A couple overlapping techniques, a couple great links (now bookmarked), and a lot of experience brought to bear really helped. End result was a successful maiden and a still healthy ship. For those of you that threw out a number, 3 back from the LE seemed to be pretty darn close. That translated into a lead plug about the size of a small coffee cup (with a hole in it for the tow release). Again, the quick replies here were (are) much appreciated - shots of the maiden take off are at http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=453840page=2pp=15 DARTS aerotow shots to follow when I get to more friendly computer. [RCSE] The hobby shop in Muncie me a solid today
Just a quick thanks to the folks at the hobby shops on the grounds of the AMA site - they opened up literally just for me this morning, for a 4 dollar sale that got my scale ship in the air. DROVE in and opened up. Thanks Tony for making the call, too - must be nice to have that kind of pull. I was literally on the flight line when my retract stopped locking down - I had set that up 3 years ago, and I used a 2-56 pushrod; it was bending before getting to full extension. I was able to buy a threaded 4-40 rod, 2 locking clevises, and I had the ship in the air within the hour. Just too nice not to acknowledge. Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Dayton Aerotow..What a Hoot !!
Thanks, Jack! Jack is on my list for doing a solid, also - he and Paul Siegel gave my ship a pre-maiden once over, helped me properly redress my gear issues and gave the final OK on my seat of the pants CG calculations. Also, I've heard this a dozen times over the last couple years - there is just not a better tow pilot around than Johnny Berlin. He made my maiden a non-event, and he saved a ship that caught a wingtip off the grass. He described it later as knowing there was a problem back there, but he figured out what happened and saved the ship without ever seeing it. Just outstanding. I am kicking myself for missing Saturday's flying, really wish there were more time on the calendar for this kind of flying - if you've not been to or flown in an aerotow, there's nothing like it. [RCSE] Initial CG on a scratch ship...
Title: Initial CG on a scratch ship... Just trying to get a rough idea where to start here, what formula you might use to come up with a starting CG. Picture a 200 inch wing, root chord about 11 inches, tip about 5, straight leading edge, tapering TE. Modern airfoil, HQ 2.5, 12 - 10 percent thick. My thought was to go mid span, take some percentage of the chord there, then mark the root that far back - example: 30% of 8 becomes 2.4 inches - mark the root at 2.4 inches from the leading edge. 2 questions - how far off is that logic, how far off is 30%? I'm towing this ship for the first flight, so I'd like to be pretty close, erring to the nose heavy side. Thanks! Brent

RE: [RCSE] Need help programming JR 770 rcvr
Hi Bernie, I would set those up as though you had flaps- I think that means use the Gear and AUX2 slots on your RX. I think that's right - my 2nd guess is Throttle and AUX2. You could then use the crow settings to control those from your throttle stick, mixing in elevator as you need. That should get you the butterfly mix you want, just don't mix in the ailerons (assuming you run the rudder off that channel and the right stick). I'm stuck at work, or I'd check my setup, but I think that's right - aileron and aux1, gear and aux2 for a 4 servo wing is what I picture on my ship. RE: [RCSE] JR RS6UL receiver full range?
I've used the 610s in several full range applications without any issues. Used one from time to time in my Paragon, flew that to the limits of my vision (which is fair, and that's a big ship). I also fly one in a 2-meter Allegro, and I've had no problems with that (using a handlaunch-type lacquered wire antenna) - again, I've had that out a long way. I have not used any of mine in an electric, so I can't say that wouldn't change the math - I doubt it would, especially if you have a decent speed controller. RE: [RCSE] Covering Obeche over white foam
Hey Russ, I can't find the article, think it disappered when Mr. Derstine did, but the gist of it was to use Ultracote. I've used that directly over foam, will take a much lower temperature. I'm going from memory, but the main point was to get a good surface first. Fine sand the obechi (200 going towards 400 grit), vacuum the dust, and then use a cheese cloth (?) and wipe the wings to get down to clean wood. I'm doing the same thing in the next 2 weeks - 5M obechi wings, bought some Ultracote in bulk - should be fun. Good luck! Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: Re: [RCSE] Gluing Servos v.s. Servo Frames
That's the 2nd time that what I would consider a top flyer or top designer has talked completely differently about weight in a ship depending on where it's placed. Hmmm. I built the Drela Allegro-Lite last Fall, and for a 2-Meter built up ship, it will take as much lead as you can put in the belly - granted, it's a small belly, but still close to a pound. That in mind, when building the tips and tail feathers, weight was kept to a bare minumum, success measured in fractions of grams. The math supports it, if you care enough to fight through it, minimum speeds, mass and moment arms, headaches and sore eyes. All I really needed to hear (and basically hear again today) is that it affects how well your ship turns, how small a thermal you can work, the big things. Things I am filing away in case my thumbs ever catch up with that kind of advice... B RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Long wings? Has anyone seen Tony Elliott's 1/3 scale ETA? It's an amazing thing; if you haven't seen it, look for it in an older Silent Flight / SeModeler magazine. The full size is over 100 feet, a truly amazing ship in its own right. Tony helped me a lot over the last couple years, and he sent me the work in process shots of this thing - 4 piece wing, each section looks longer than my building room, the finished span (I had to pull up a picture in the background to convince myself of this) legitimately looks to be over 30 feet. I've been doing composites actively the last year and really working it this Winter - I'd like to get the rest of the DARTS involved with me, if only flying some of my stuff (doing SuperGee wings right now). I think that the composites end of soaring really is where the growth is or could be. That's why I liked a more open category like best self-built or best own-designed award - just something to acknowledge the guys that are trying something new (if only new to them). RE: [RCSE] Good news and Bad news - slopin'
My brother and I hit Brookville (IN) today, was much better than I expected - S winds, 10-15 with lots of lift. Helped my brother dial in his new HalfPipe, made mine look pretty ratty (almost a full season in on it, and the rocks and guardrails are taking their toll). Plan was to get him flying on the backside by the end of the day, mostly successful. It's addictive. If you have not tried DS'ing yet, you have to try it at least once. I'm definitely hooked - spent the last hour working on making good circles. was getting some good speed going. Learned that tighter cricles were faster, maybe just feels that way? Regardless,I felt like today was my fasted day yet. For a sailplane guy, there's nothing like the sound of an engine-less ship going by fast enough to make that kind of noise. Good thing I'm still flying foam, tho - "set her down" hard enough to bend metal control horns, but the ship could fly tomorrow. Good News / Bad News? Good news, still one of the best sites to fly around. Bad news, I won't be out there tomorrow..... Brent
RE: [RCSE] Re: Wood Crafters / Builders etc.
I agree that ARFs have their place in our hobby, especially for those of us that have the 8 to 5 jobs. I have to admit that I do like the spirit of events like Woodcrafters, if only in that it keeps the building segment of our hobby invigorated. That being said, it would be nice to at least recognize the builders - maybe not seperate events or contests, but maybe a seperate award? Top Fly what you Built and a package of 30 minute epoxy as a prize? Sort of serious there. Still fly and compete with the rest, just an acknowledgment of the craftsmanship. I guess I'm really looking for a way to encourage fliers or guests that only see the expensive side of the hobby. It's much easier to sell soaring if you can point out a $100 ship as a way to try us out; most people I've talked to sort of zone out when you say a ship cost $1,000 bucks without servos. It's an especially hard sell if they're standing there with a 12 year-old son or daughter that's the one interested. Maybe that's part of why it's easier to get new slopers out? [RCSE] carbon boom interference, Ham guy inputs.
I made the mistake (teasing) of mentioning this to a Ham guy I work with. He looked at the picture of me, the radios, and the plane - immediately said you've got vertical and horizontal polarization. Then, yes, the carbon boom could be causing you issues in that orientation. A half hour and 2 chalkboards later... The best ideas he had was a triangle shape going out the wing, back the fuse, back via the other wing - optimally connecting to the ground of the battery. That blew my mind. Plan B is the antenna above or below the boom, trailing to a half wave - he guessed (not knowing all the details of RC radios) the antenna length to be 39 for a half wave. The other idea he had was 2 antennas, both 39 - one normal, run out one wing. The other antenna would be hooked to the battery ground, out the other wing. I suggested one down the wing, the other down the boom. He said that would probably be bad, too directional. The triangle approach sounds interesting, anyone else hear something similar? He thinks that if you do it right, you get the RX into a vertical polarization, more like the transmitter. Thanks to all who've given input on this! [RCSE] carbon boom interference, redux
I set up an Allegro, magnet wire antenna run external to the boom - loose wraps back to the rudder. I have since seen some erratic flying; hard down when it's headed directly at me (from a turn, not far out). I've not had the problems at distance, but more like a quarter mile out, under 500 feet. Saved it both times, maybe by turning the tranny to a 1o o'clock position. Looking thru the archives here (and the Allegro group), I've seen some discussion on this. Any thoughts? Could the boom still be casting a shadow here? I had assumed that getting outside of boom would help, and that going around it would expose the antenna from all directions - now I'm not so sure. I'm considering running directly back to the rudder, maybe just to isolate this. Thoughts? Thanks, Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. I use Profile 2.2 (Frankie Arzu in the Help/About screen), and it read those files. I also downloaded and used the .DAT files from Charles River's site, same story. Just a reminder, the DARTS run a scale Aerotow each year at Muncie, typically the last weekend in April. [RCSE] Brookville - a tale of 2 winds....
I just rolled back into Dayton after 3 hours at Brookville (IN) Dam. It started off almost perfect for light foam, Zagis and Biz's, then it just died. For about 30 minutes, the only ships that were really working were a scale Discus(?) and a 5oz Alula. Then, Round 2 started. I think Ed Franz clocked the wind at 30 before I was able to even break out ballast... Paul Siegel was doing huge DS circles with a nice 60 glass sloper, another flier had a Spider 60 out front, and I put up a recovered, refuselaged M60... Just a blast, well worth the wait. Note: a stock M60 WILL DS in that kind of wind, even in my hands. I had no idea that there was so much combat in the KY/OH area - if you find yourself near the dam in a good south wind, bring a combat wing of some sort. There must have been 8 ships in the air, looked great - I tried to play with a HalfPipe, but I really didn't want to get hit with that plane. It was pretty cool to blow thru the furball on a high speed pass, tho. Back to normal society - Lift, Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Happy New Years from the Darkside
Before the obligatory celebrating, got a chance to fly the local dam in a 15-20mph wind. Thanks to the Cinci group, I even was able to take some runs at the backside. Thanks Paul for showing me the way! Open invitation to meet any local fliers at CJ Brown on any day there is a 15+mph wind from the West, maybe I can pass some of this on. RE: [RCSE] Beginner's radio
I like the Hitec Flash radios; a Flash 4 is pretty cheap now, and they do basic mixing and can store multiple planes. Might be nice to have the 5, too - would have a little more growth potential before having to move up to a more pricey radio. You could also do their Neon, but it really doesn't leave much room to grow before you'd be shopping again. Good luck and Happy Holidays, Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] hlg bagging question
Title: hlg bagging question Just a quickie - say you're doing an aileron HLG wing, no dihedral (or minimal) Question is, do you bag it as one piece, or would you bag left and right halves to join later? I could see arguments for both, but I'm just looking for the logic I'm overlooking. Thanks and Happy Holidays, Brent
[RCSE] New year's Day Cancellation....or, you can't beat Gordy here this time.
Sad news for all. For the first time in ~25 years the Bloomington, Indiana New Year's Day Contest will not be held. I would like to thank all of the faithful participants for attending in the past. I have chosen to discontinue CD'ing the event and as the bulk of my other club members are power-heads, no-one has taken up the task. [RCSE] night and day....
I have been messing around with making composite wings for a while now, but the foam cutting was always such a hassle... I can't count how many times I recut a section before I got it right, stuck on the beginning of the LE, didn't drop into the lower surface correctly, etc. I finally decided to make a suspension setup for my feather cut, and I am kicking myself for not doing this sooner. Suspended a 4 foot section of 3/4 dowel above the cutting board, perpendicular to the wire, and I hung the bow from a loop that slides over the dowel. It is just so much more reliable, if only because the bow doesn't want to hang up on the template and the wheel doesn't take the bow off diagonally on a tapered cut. Just passing that on, in case you have not tried this - took me about 10 minutes to set up, would have been worth it if it took a day. [RCSE] micro sloper....
My brother went sloping this weekend with me, had a good time... Now he's ordered a Combat Wing ARF, but he was looking to build something - liked the idea of a light, light ship. Has anyone here flown the Alula? Is it a good flying plane?? Any other suggestions for something similar, a Weasel or the like?Goal is something to work light lift, should be foam . RE: [RCSE] Re: Soaring V1 #6696: LMR motor for Pike Superior
The one thing that would concern me with a BEC on a higher cell count set up is the remaining charge in your cells when the cutoff occurs. The BEC cuts off at a certain voltage; divide that by the number of cells to get what each cell is still holding - as you add cells, that gets smaller. I'm doing Sesame Street math here, but the gist is you're cutting the margin closer as you add cells. A ship of any size shouldn't complain about a small Nimh receiver pack; I've seen too many hour long flights end in a terminal dive because someone didn't have enough charge in a 2000mah pack to drive an elevator servo... RE: [RCSE] Indiana DS Record Set Today
After stumbling around Eastern Indiana for what felt like hours, I found myself at Brookville, also... It's big - I have been flying dams for a couple years now, but this is long... And high. With wolves. Paul gave me a DS clinic, and I finally got the feel for it. Got the taste for it, too... I stayed a couple hours after Marc and Paul left, flying with my brother, practicing - I can see why people get hooked with this stuff. Everytime I went back up the dam faster than down I got it. Even got the obligatory bruise on my thumb - something about this makes me grip the tranny, assuming that's adrenaline... Next week??? : ) B. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Re: New Ky DS Record Set Today in Frankfort!
One of the most common problems when you are trying to learn to DS is to not dive deep enough to get through the boundry layer. This probably is what I did, coupled with getting too far from the back of the dam - I write that off to lingering in the top layer you described. Hopefully I get some opportunities to work this out over the Winter months here - if my hands can take it (still cold from yesterday). RE: [RCSE] New Ky DS Record Set Today in Frankfort!
Some of the other Ohio fliers got out today, in between bursts of rain we got in some pretty good sloping too We flew out at CJ Brown dam, in Springfield - pretty good for a West wind, and we had plenty of that today. By the time we called it, we had gusts up to 40, 30 mph pretty constantly.Wind was strong enough that you literally had to assume a combat stance to keep your balance. I got a chance to put all the ballast in an M60- at the end, that was the only foam that would stay flying in this stuff. As I was leaving,a Boomerang was working its way across the lake - hopefully made it to the other shore before dark:hope they saved theradio equipment. I had a HalfPipe out for a while, and it seemed fine without any extra weight - just amazed at how slippery that ship is. Quick question, tho - I tried to duck over to the dark side, and I came close to making the swim. What's the trick for getting behind a slope without getting chewed up? I know you're supposed to be pretty committed when you go in, but what's a good way to get started? I felt like I bled off all my energy before I even got started. Brent
