I found another 1400 that I had stashed. Tried it and could get no response other than a little noise. So, assuming it is not the hard drive, I pulled that 2.G and put it in the good 1400. The machine recognized it, but said it wasn't a HDD disk. I tried to initialize it and it didn't happen.

I'm so hurt! I'm the only Mac tech @ the Fremont Fry's! And as for the people Fry's hires, it all depends. I know that there is a LARGE number of people @ Fry's who know very little about anything technical. On the other hand there is a big number of people working @ Fry's who know their stuff!
