I'm generally typecast as an end-of-the-night (or 10 am, depending) dj,
although I think of myself as more the 4 am type ...

Anyway, there are a bunch of these over the years. Some of the best:

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Passenger (llloco-motion mix 12)
 Boiling Point - I Am
Model 500 - Ocean to Ocean
Dubtribe Sound System - Do It Now
Orbital - Impact (or anything on the 'brown album' really)
 Alice Coltrane - Firebird

seed of truth.
I started to hear tones which, in the ears of unaccustomed listener,
caused an outburst of madness and dragged my mind beyond this familiar and

While the light of reason dimmed from my eyes I still managed to read the

808 State is basically Pacific 707 - I tend to think of their New
Build-era material as passable but generic early techno, and their post
Ex:El material as noodly, overproduced electronica, but the Pacific
track is an absolute classic. In many ways it is underrated by a lot of
Detroit techno fans, because it was a really early appearance of the
jazz-techno sound that eventually became more widespread after Nation 2
Nation, World 2 World etc, and I don't think it receives its fair dues
in that respect.

If you own Ex:El then you get Pacific but also quite a few tracks which

a bunch of other tracks that actually haven't dated badly at all.

RE: (313) 808 State

2002-12-13 Thread Brendan Nelson
Yeah, I think Gerald actually contributed in quite a major way to
Pacific and got ripped off quite badly by the rest of the group. The
earlier 808 State material is good, but it's not as good as what was
coming out of Detroit and Chicago at that time - for me, it's Pacific
that really differentiated them from the music coming out of the US.

As the Gerald-less 808 State started trying to come up with new
material, though, it all went horribly wrong, and by the time Gorgeous
came out 808 State records were more useful as frisbees than as things
to actually listen to... (imho!)

Have to agree except for 'Cleo Leo'. That song has always stood out as the

'Spanish Heart', it just isn't happening. :(

Cubik was a classic at Medusa's in Chicago around '90 and received

(313) I'm bored, some detroit-mixes please?

2002-12-13 Thread Remco . Doorewaard
Hi, I0m a little bored at work right now, does anybody have a nice detroit
dj-mix, from themselves or from others in MP3 format?

With some old transmat-classics would be nice (psyche, drama)

Thanks very much, Remco

speaking of 808 state, i really love them and i like all
of their albums, but 90 is their best in my opinion-
the most detroit related record however is quadrastate.
the music they did from 93 (including the gorgeous
album) takes quite a while to get into, you really should
love them if you intend to buy them, same with their
brand new album 'outpost transmission', released on
circus (!)
i am wondering about many people reducing this band
to pacific, they've done a lot of other anthems, olympic
for example is a great one too !!

barely listen to 'Pacific' anymore (wasn't it 'number one' in the uk? Or am
I in a rare (!) obfuscated and horribly confused, er state. It was
overplayed imo. But there are similar-era things which I could still go home

As for 'Cubik', although I'm not sure if I made the connection at the time,
I now think it's a poor copy of CyberSonik's 'Technarchy'.

These factors, to me indicate a fragile legacy re. 808 State.

But I need to hear much more of their stuff before I beg 'ladies stay dead',

If you own Ex:El then you get Pacific but also quite a few tracks which
 have dated really badly.

Have to agree except for 'Cleo Leo'. That song has always stood out as the
track on Ex:el for me, but no matter how much I try to enjoy 'Oops' or
'Spanish Heart', it just isn't happening. :(

Cubik was a classic at Medusa's in Chicago around '90 and received
consistent play well into '91. Probably the first techno other

If you go to http://www.microlovr.com/313party/, my mix on there starts
off fairly fast modern, but then goes into a sequence of old
transmat/kms tracks... also, there's a mix called my dancefloor at
http://www.sharesite.org/music.html which has some old Detroit stuff too
- juan atkins (as Vision), inner city, MK, etc, but nothing on transmat
I don't think! There's a tracklist though, so you can see for yourself

Pacific got loads of play in Detroit. Cubik got some play, but died quickly.
Most people know 808 State because of Pacific, that's why they're reduced to
just that track.

Personally, I like Ex:El more than any other album of theirs. If they had
only released instrumental versions of the tracks with the bad crooning on
it... (I was never a bjork or sugarcubes fan)

2002-12-13 Thread Brendan Nelson
It wasn't number one, but it was fairly successful in the charts. I can
listen to it fairly easy, but prefer the versions without the synth-sax
bit (which reminds me a bit of Guru Josh sometimes). Overexposure to the
track is probably what makes it difficult for you to listen to!

It's the same with LFO LFO, which did well in the charts and kind of
suffered as a result - it's a brilliant track, but I never actually play
it out because it's been somewhat overexposed.

Did Cubic predate Technarchy? I wouldn't be surprised if they did copy
it, though - at that time relatively few people in the UK were aware of
what was coming out of the US, so a lot of early UK techno producers did
plagiarise a bit...

Definitely - as do the Pulse EPs, which I was lucky enough to pick up in
an Edinburgh record shop for about £3 each two years ago! But if you
find the Earth Beat compilation of their pre-FSOL work, pick it up -
everything on there is made for the dancefloor, and although there are
some quite cheesy rave-style tracks (Smart Systems!), there are some
real gems on there.

I have another pre-FSOL EP of theirs under the name Intelligent

With some old transmat-classics would be nice (psyche, drama)

 | I think the first album 'Accelerator' holds up well today.

Communication - pretty ahead of its time, really, and it has an amazing
 wireframe cover!

I'll need to check the other early stuff. I love Humanoid's 'Stakker'. That
Flux Trax compilation gathered some gems.

RE: (313) 808 State (and A Guy Called Gerald, FSOL, LFO, Sweet Exorcist Orbital)

2002-12-13 Thread Craig Harrison
Just some additional info on the posts made.

FSOL's took the Stakker theme from one of their previous projects, AST (see
Asus Flow). There's an old compilation out there of all their various
guises, such as Yage, Mental Cube, Stakker... basically everything key that
they did on Earthbeat.

As for A Guy Called Gerald, he did a response to what happened to him when
he left/was pushed from 808 State, called Specific Hate, in which he uses
samples of the phone message (apparently, he was kicked from 808 State over
the phone), and he whistles the tune from Pacific State all the way through.
Not sure of the label, but I remember it had a Club as the label logo (as in
Hearts, Spades, Diamonds). Voodoo Ray got hammered, but the promo of it had
a great track Blow Your House Down on the flip-side, which was later
hashed into a more thumping version on the Chicago Symphony EP (red vinyl
bootleg-type affair).

As for LFO? Frequencies is probably one of the finest albums of the 90's.
LFO's LFO had a bit of a rough ride though, as Steve Wright ((ex-)BBC
Radio One deejay) claimed at the time that it was the worst record he
had ever heard, but was under strict instructions to play the track, as it
had been placed on the B-list for airing. John Peel still gave them alot
of praise tho at the time, and rightly so. Mark Bell's gone on to do
production work for Bjork's Homogenic and for Depeche Mode too. Varley's
been doing work under G-Man and presents Tony Montana, but the work is a
bit further away from LFO's roots than Varley's production work. Track 4
from the LFO (Leeds Warehouse) 12 is still a most glorious example of how
to put together atmospherics, bleep and base.

Sweet Exorcist's Test One, that can be traced far further back... half of
Sweet Exorcist is Cabarat Voltaire's Richard H. Kirk. The Cabs Body Soul
LP is probably one of the most underestimated LP's within the early stream
of techno that was coing from the UK in the early 90's. The similarities
between some of the work that Mills did with Waveform Transmissions Vol.1
and X-102 are scarey-close.

And finally... Orbital. If you get chance to dig around, pick up the two
Mutations EP's... the reworking of Chime is fantastic.

I think you mean than Bell's production work! They basically split up
because Varley was keen on pursuing a more straightforward clubby and

You know, we shouldn't be too hard on ourselves (in Europe you mean). A lot
of that hardcore has deep roots in the US industrial movement which
definitely predates even many people on this list! Granted, there were a lot

a distinct line and be able to say: 'it was *you* what started it!'

Also re. hardcore, remember Generator-era Oldham and his little stable? It's

Cubik was 1990 as well. really I think the 'which came first' debate is a
bit overblown with these two songs though, as neither bassline is really a
triumph of melodic construction. It was more about the production. I mean,
it's a 2-bar loop, and just think of the countless spawn that imitated, if

Cubik was 1990 as well. really I think the 'which came first' debate is a
bit overblown with these two songs though, as neither bassline is really a
triumph of melodic construction. It was more about the production. I mean,
it's a 2-bar loop, and just think of the countless spawn that imitated, if
 not copied it.

RE: (313) 808 State

2002-12-13 Thread Craig Harrison
Hehe - knew Mark Archer pretty well (I was at Uni and lived in Stafford for
a few years after). He used to get all the Transmat tracks through Network,
but worse still was the fact that he had 2 copies of Techno : The New Dance
Sound Of Detroit, and the only way that he would give me one was if I got
him a 12 copy of Summertime (yes... that Will Smith person). Also went
around his house while he was doing a remix of a Michelle Gayle
(ex-Eastenders) track, but said that he wasn't enjoying it... only after
hearing the vocal that they'd sent him could you understand why. Never heard
singing so bad.

Never met Chris Peat (knowingly at least). I know that his brother did some
time for dealing tho.

It summed it all up when Mark was asked to respond to what the tabloids were
saying at the time, and that Stafford was Techno City... he said.. the
only thing techno about Stafford is the lifts in the local shopping centre.

BTW. If anyone is interested, http://www.aeonflux.co.uk - it's playing most
of the artists mentioned (LFO, 808 State, Sweet Exorcist, A Guy Called
Gerald (Blow Your House Down is on there too). Scroll down a bit on the
main page, and you'll see the artists on the play list.

(313) Top 19 of 2002

I've got a top 19, with one slot open for once I've finished shopping this
year. Not terribly [313] throughout, but some [313] goodies. I'm becomming a
wuss, it would seem. Only 4 techno records made the cut.

1. Ola Jagun The Ancestral Rhythms - Oda Oya (The Rebirth Version) -
Spiritual Life Music [SLM-389]

2. Convextion - Spiced Tea - Down Low [dLVEXT1]

3. Iz Diz's - Mouth (Brad Peep's Remix for friends) - Classic [CMC65RMX]

4. Classic Man - Lounge Sessions ep - Natural Resource [NR-002]

5. Neon Phusion - It's Another EP - Laws of Motion [LM025]

6. MOS feat. Aroy Dee - Utilities #2 - Rushhour Records [RH006]

7. Rednose Distrikt - N.Y. Boom Domu Remixes - Rushhour Records [RH 009]

8. Kuniyuki - Precious Hall - Natural Resource [NR-004]

9. Joseph Malik - Take It All In and Check it All Out b/w Futuristica -
Compost Records [COMPOST 103-1]

10. Recloose - Ain't Changin' - PLanet E [PE65266]

11. V/A - Detroit Beatdown Volume One - Third Ear Recordings [3E/LP 001]

12. Focus - Marvin Is One - Versatile Records [VER032]

13. Russ Gabriel - Flip Down to Break - Emoticon [emot 011]

14. Theo Parrish - Solitary Flight - Sound Signature [SS016]

15. Incognito - Skin on My Skin (Pepe Braddock's Brad Peep Remix) - Talkin'
Loud [588 970-1]

16. Los Hermanos - Birth of 3000 b/w Son Dos - UR [LH-1]

17. Surgeon - Screw the Roses - Counterbalance [CBX008]

18. Pepe Bradock - The Forbidden Fruit EP - Atavisme [ATA002]

19. DJ Jazzy Jeff - Rock Wit U Feat. Erro (Yoruba Soul Mix) - BBE
[BBEBG12007]

I strongly suspect the Visioneers 2nd 7 will come in at #20.

godawful prog-rock singing from Cobain himself - extremely self-indulgent

nope i'm sure it isn't that one; the mix was definitely sort of
cut'n'paste (on reel-to-reel) job between original mix and the omen
mix, mostly with pieces of the track without 303, and it was just a
little bit faster than the omen mix (probably because of reel-to-reel,

 Dont forget Amorphous Androgynous

In the latest Future Music was an interview with FSOL, thy said they
are releasing a new Amorphous Androgynous album...

Isness was released in europe as The Future Sound of London but in US
it was released as Amorphous Androgynous, or was it the other way
around. strange stuff indeed.

juno had it btw under The Future Sound of London presents Amorphous
Androgynous.
