2002-02-04 Thread jurren baars

jurren baars, born march 4 1975 in enschede, the netherlands. moved to
utrecht 1994. law-student. been into techno/house since '93/'94 before that
classical (as a 4 year old i'd try to put my head into the tv whenever i
heard huge orchestra's playin'; that probably explains my love for loud
music with strings), pop (michael jackson), rock (tool, faith no more, etc)
nowadays listen to basically anything i can get my hands on! - jazz, soul,
funk, new wave, disco, hip-hop, house, techno, afro-beat, broken-beat,
electro, dub, booty and hi-tech funk. i'm bored rather quickly, so i mainly
want to be surprised; i'm not looking for records that i allready own (no
more drumcodes for me). huge fan of theo parrish, shake, derrick may and mad
mike. on 313 for 2 years. bed room dj (the best in the world imho: i play
all my favorite records! too bad i don't mix 'm better).

in response to otto: why utrecht is holland's techno-town no.1? just try
calling anyone here in utrecht when outside of the netherlands... dial:
+3130.. i rest my case.

jurren

btw: my last name, baars, is the dutch word for bass (the fish) so no more
silly jokes about the 'great lake bass' on 313, 'cause i am not amused ;)

Maria IS the butt-kicking Violetta of all time. And Patsy is sublime. It's
hard to tie these into Detroit sounds, but a lot goes into the pot when
you talk about influences. I can hear echoes of Motown in the Detroit stuff
- most people think I'm crazy when I say that.
I remember getting into an argument on the IDM-l with someone who couldn't
understand why anyone into IDM would find James Brown relevant. Personally,
I don't see how you can spin Popcorn and *not* hear the connections. One
of the great things about this list is the diverse musical
backgrounds/appreciation of music in general here. I have always had one
foot in the indie camp myself and Detroit has some great things to add into
that stew as well. Of course, it isn't techno and I am wandering abroad
from the thrust of the list, but a bit of variance never hurt the mix imo.

Good point - but PA hadn't yet been released. Odd thing, being old. I
always seem to think that there is some young, mythical group of astute
listeners out there who will recognize great stuff on its own merits (and
yes - I know that there is a great deal of subjectivity involved in making
that ostensibly objective statement about great stuff, but go with me for
a minute :-) and /or step outside their own skins to see
value/connections/innovations in musical history simply by virtue of them
being young or looking the part. Silly me.
Maybe it's because many of my own peers while away the hours wearing out
Bob Seger The Silver Bullet Band live CDs.
More likely is the fact that I'd like to believe something other than
musical taste is more a matter of individuals rising beyond what is
formatted for them rather than accept the fact that it is just that and has
less to do with age, etc. Kant once said that most people are like
...cattle, led willingly...

DJ Style: REAL house music - tribal (not prog crap), Latin, nu-disco (sans

Inspirations: Derrick May / Black Dog Plaid / Warp Records / UR
Hates: Repetitive threads about Jeff Mills 'going house' on 313
Work: Wage Slave
 313:5 years (on and off)

Born in sunny Manchester (love it hate it) in 1972. Brother turned me on
to a
lot of unusual, alternative music whilst I was growing up (Throbbing Gristle
etc.)
which gave me an appetite for music which 'strayed from the norm'. Did lots
of
'raving' whilst growing up in M/CR in the early 90's and, consequently,
developed
an interest in Detroit house/techno music. Developed love of electronica
through
Warp Records brilliant 'Artificial Intelligence' series and after a visit to
one of their
parties at the Ministry of Sound (to see Derrick May and Plaid) was sold for
life.
Whilst studying in Plymouth, UK I contributed a dance-music page to a local
rag
which gave me the opportunity to interview some well known dance-artists and
(best
of all) get lots of free records. During a university exchange trip to
Purdue University
,IN I had the opportunity to visit Detroit where I spun at an illegal event
called 'Mean
Cup of Joe' (I know, s**t name :) down the road from Blake Baxter's record
shop.
I also managed to visit the old Submerge building and meet some of the UR
crew which
,as we in Manchester would say, was 'sweet'. Stupidly sold my entire record
collection
in order to pay off university debts and didn't listen to any house music
for about 2 years.
Ditched this bland existence with a year ago and am now rebuilding my record
collection
with a vengeance. Spend spare time d.j'ing deleting inane threads about
Jeff Mills
(shock, horror he's not d.j'ing minimal techno anymore), people refusing to
dance at the
Motor in D-Town (it's not that difficult you know) and wondering if Derrick
May will ever
make a new record. Peace-Out.

About me:
James Boylan - grew up in area about 2 miles form Northern Irish border
called Monaghan, now living in Dublin and working as a sports sub at the mo.
 25 years old.

Like one or two other people on the list, the Network compilation 'Retro
Techno' turned me onto techno, especially 'No UFOs'.
I'd seen it reviewed in the NME and they gave it 10/10 (shock horror -
British press get it right). Subsequently bought CDs, but really discovered
Detroit techno music when I bought decks just over two-three years ago and
started buying vinyl. Also have a love of lots of other music from the
Smiths to KRS-One to deep house. Count myself lucky being in Dublin as one
or two clubs here played the real deal when it came to Detroit. Local
techno/electro and house DJs influenced me more than any visiting jocks I've
ever seen, although I thought DJ Bone was class when he played here. Hope to
get a gig one day myself. Went to DEMF last year (big up Dennis Donohue) -
highlights: Dopplereffekt and Ultradyne live and that little party in the
downtown cafe where Alton Miller and Brett Dancer where playing.

Pet Hate: Richie Hawtin's music. Very overrated I think.
Favourite Record: Sonic Sunset - Model 500

djing since 1989 but introduced to electronic music
at a very early age via my father's obsession with
kraftwerk, tangerine dream, brian eno etc and him
building his own synths. i'm still forced to listen to
his music now and he's 55. a true pioneer. though
he's a bit obsessed with trance music.

music - yazoo, human league, depeche mode, simple minds
to the current nu wave obsession - adult, gigolos, lazergun, bpitch etc.
into pretty much all techno styles from planet e to downwards.
bit of a booty/ghetto obsession too.

collection - close to 10,000 at one point though more like 1000 now.
had to make room for my 2 kids.
1 record i never got and still desperately want is
MANTRAX on rs records, only released as promo i think.
8 years now trying to get this record. someone must have it?

today's favourites.
that detrechno double pack that i never remember the name of that
includes 'back to the future' and 'sole waves'. best electro ever.
apart from maybe - mole people's luv luv lik lik
ron trent - altered states, never get bored of that record.
morgan - flowerchild, always gets the floor moving
surgeon/regis - british murder boys. best downwards yet.
new gary martin on teknotika, forgot title.
theo parish - dirty rhodes. f***in awesome.
to say i run a record shop i'm very poor remembering titles!

memorable moments
- first time i went to leeds' Warehouse in 89. i lost my job 3 months
later!, life changing.
jeff mills @ orbit in 93. life changing again.
tribal gathering with kraftwerk and the detroit tent. (terence
parker dropping 'ring my bell' at 5 in the afternoon and watching
the tent empty was pretty funny) bumping into richie hawtin in
the happy hardcore tent at tribal was a shock too.
dj bone coming to play for us in leeds to around 30 people 2 years
ago and playing the best detroit set i ever heard. UK 313'ers where
were you?
best ever would have to be getting off with miss kitten at orbit though
last year, hang on, that didn't actually happen. bugger.

loves
 - my girlfriend and 2 kids.
 - hong kong cinema, total madness.
also partial to watching sweaty half naked teenage girls losing it on the
dancefloor to fierce techno.

hates
- dj's who feel the need to take you on a journey - shut up
garnier and just play the bloody records.
people who take this all too seriously. it's dance music for fuck's
sake. have fun.

biggest regret - not buying studio equipment in 92 and going on holiday
to spain instead and blowing all my money.

313 - about 2 years on and off. tend to say stupid things without thinking
and get flamed for days, usually after a few drinks.

have a good weekend.

Now it's time for all the tall people out there!

  Name: Wibo

Also known as: that tall dutch dude with the glasses

  Age: about 31, Taurus

   Born: Utrecht, the Netherlands

   Living in: Utrecht

Work: IT-Specialist at ING Barings Bank HQ, Amsterdam

NonWork: Chief Extreme Sonic Experimentations Officer for
TechnoTourist.org, producing under the DeTour monicker with John C.(non
 313er)

DJing: since 1990. Basically I started out playing anything hard and
powerful (but no hardcore / gabba), but about 6 years ago narowwed that
down
to just techno, but still hard. But I also like US Garage, Main Street,
GiantStep and the deep Naked Music type records, and of course the Detroit
stuff. Every once in a while I get to play those records as well. People
who
know me as a techno DJ are always very surprised to learn that I like
soulful music as well and not just DrumCodes!

313: Since sept 94, on and off

Record collection: once upon a time 4000, but at one morning I woke up
with a deep hate against any record that has a drumroll, so I about sold
all
of those. Now it's about 2-3000 pcs.

Most memorable moments: too many! Inner City @ DEMF, Mike Grant @ Tresor
Berlin, hearing Derrick May for the very first time in the Amsterdam RoXY,
Sven Vath at OneOff (RoXY Amsterdam), getting a tour through the 2030
building by MadMike himself, hanging out with the Slam/Soma posse at last
years 5 Days Off Amsterdam, Laurent Garnier Live at last year's Hugo
D'Night, hearing your record played by another DJ and watch the crowd go
 nuts.

Me: Nathan Goode - 24

Live in Adelaide, Australia. Been on 313 for about 4 years now. First
lurking for a while and now occasionally posting, usually Track IDs!

Work for a bank (boring!!) but about to start a radio announcing course and
have done a bit of freelance writing.

Like all music styles, especially techno, house, deep house, hip-hop, jazz,
bossanova.

Got into this music by watching the TV doco 'Dancing In The Streets' when i
heard the wonderful 'It Is What It Is' by Derrick May. Ever since then my
music tastes changed as I realised that this was the music I waited years to
hear. Since that day been buying Detroit techno, house and other records.

Bedroom dj producer (although I haven't done any music for ages!) Only a
baby on the record front, compared to a lot of you guys, only have about
200, but ever increasing, as my pay packet decreases.

2002-02-01 Thread Jonny McIntosh
Me: Jonny McIntosh, 24.

Live: in London and work for the infamous Music and Video Exchange,
officially doing the accounts, mail order and stuff - actually just trying
to find rare records on the internet and writing up lists until payday comes
(just 4 more days...). Constantly thinking of binning it and getting round
to do a masters.

Previously: Around north east Fife, Scotland for 18 years. Then Oxford and
London for the last 6.

Music: House and jazz are the axes, sweeping in tons from disco, soul, funk,
reggae and, obviously, techno. I have an ever evolving collection of records
that numbers 2500 approx at any given time.

I first stumbled onto Detroit techno in about 93/94 via Black Dog, Global
Communications etc. and visits to Edinburgh clubs Pure and Sativae, and
luckily fell in with fellow Detroit fanatics when I went to university.
Started buying records when I could afford it - I think Kenny Larkin's
Azimuth LP was my first Detroit one. I have DJed for about 6 years around
London and Oxford, with varying degrees of success, and only recently got
more involved in finding my way around bits of equipment.

On the list for 2 or 3 years now, and used to occasionally lurk before that
whilst a student.

Jonny.

Some of this talk about the old-timer members on here and get-togethers
and
such... reminded me that I have in fact met one member in person from the
313 list, Cyborg K (Dave) from Kalamazoo who did live PA's. (not to be
confused with Cyborg Elph(?) who seemed to be adept at stirring up shit
on
the list at the same time.) He was a regular message poster to the list
when I first joined up, but then ran into some internet-access problems
(lack of a computer) and disappeared. Just wondering if anyone has heard
 from him in recent months?

dave does an awesome pa for those who have not saw him he is a spectacular
keyboard player. he's has played our last two parties up here in lansing
(nov and nye), he told me he was on medical leave from his cruise shiop
job and was pissed they hadent paid him yet (lol). well what ever if you
get a chance to she him I suggest it. he has had a different show both times
I saw him first time was more housy (c2 or laurent style) and the second was
old skool electro style.

list members I have met:
tim j, ryan b, christian b, and the guy who work at melodies and memories
(thanks for the mad-net.de suggestions they rip), and some dude i meet at
the demf from asia somewhere sorry forget your name (hope you liked the
richie picture)

i really seem to met more past list members, then present members. hmmm

I'm an media/audio student at LCC (lcc.edu) with about a year left here then
I'm on to a 4 year school. which by the way I'm having problems finding one
with a music studio production program (every school has a audio program,
but your making audio posts for video I dont want to do that news room crap)
if any one knows of a good audio school in michigan (prefer detroit area)
let me know.

I also produce music. nothing lately but my www.mp3.com/i_majin is still up
that was a trio (2 list members 1 not) and my first atempt at electronic
music (i've played in several diferent bands from classic rock to bluegrass,
blues to cheese country was a music theory student for a bit) since the
break up I have been concertrating on figuring out how my new equipment
works and dj'ing.

Re: [313] about the members

2002-01-31 Thread rob webb
despite JT's reservations and the slight sense of lameness that i can't help
feeling... well, it's only a bit of fun innit:

fullname: robert william webb
age: 28
hometown: leicester (uk).
currenthome: london (uk).
occupation: computer stuff.
subscribed: some time.
favoriterecord: New Order Technique.
first313record: Retro Techno compilation. hooked ever since.
visited313: once, September 1999. made a massive impression on me. forever
grateful to everyone who helped on that trip, and privileged to have met so
many wonderful and friendly ppl.
hobbies: music, being wrong, despairing at the current form and uncertain
financial future of my beloved Nottingham Forest FC.
currentlyplaying: Carl A Finlow Definition (Device), followed by ISAN
Lucky Cat (Morr Music).

maybe we should do a webpage for this shit? it's kinda interesting to know
who everyone is, tho the volume of emails (which i'm contributing to) is
likely to get out of hand. George/Dan/[EMAIL PROTECTED] - can we tack
something onto the side of the mythical list faq?

Re: [313] about the members

2002-01-31 Thread Matthew L. Thompson
Age: 32
Resides: South Bend, Indiana
Employed: Assembly worker for a commercial vehicle manufacturer flirting
with mis-management into oblivion. Considering a career change into one of
the many IT fields out there (or whatever is left to choose from now).

313 list member since 1999-ish? (mainly a lurker absorbing the wisdom and
knowledge of Detroit Techno-philes on the list and rabid Inner City/Kevin
Saunderson fan)

Hooked on Techno circa 1990, my techno collection is limited mostly to a
crate or two or older early 90's Detroit and Belgium techno, another few
crates of Chicago house, couple of crates of Chicago/LA and UK hard house,
and yet another couple of crates of that annoying progressive and trance
stuff a lot 313'ers love to hate. :) Oh yeah, and a bunch of old and new
hiphop as well. I do a couple of radio mixes each week for a radio station
in the South Bend area and I'm always looking at clubs and parties to spin
at in the area. I'll never rely on DJ'ing to make a living, but I'll
continue to do it as long as I enjoy it.

Missed out on DEMF I, but made it to DEMF II last year (the hail on Sunday
night was particularly memorable)... in spite of the disposal of Carl Craig,
I'll likely attend again this year.

that makes a hell of a lot more sense to me, or hell maybe there could be a
313 bulletin board (ala globaldarkness, submerge, technotourist) where
people could get to know each other and be more social and shoot the shit.

speaking of, y to all the old vravers out there!
