2514 connects to cable modem

2001-03-20 Thread Frank Kim

Hi folks,
Is it possible to replace the current motorola cable modem box with a
2514? If so, how do you do it? If not, what is the reason or what is the
difference between that motorola box vs a 2514 cisco router? thanks for
any input.

By the way, I'm not asking to cross-over between the motorola to the
ethernet port on a 2514.

RE: Cisco Certs Becoming Paper CCXX

2001-03-20 Thread Brad Shifflett

Then that is even better. The less there are, the more prestigous the
certification I think it is. I would say some that do pass probably are just
naturally able to do the work with no problem, some are just book smart and
have great memorization skills, but doesn't this really require a deep
knowledge to pass beyond what alot of us can even comprehend right now? I
just started looking at this myself. We just got one guy at our company
passed the lab and one pther passed the written. I can say these 2 are very
smart and bright individuals.

Actually, you are way too high on your estimate of CCIE's. As of February
28th 2001 there are 5432 worldwide, 2476 are in the US. A large number of
those work directly for Cisco.

The certification has been around since 1994 and the first CCIE was #1024

The CCIE World population can be viewed at:

My thought is if you can get all the way through the CCIE Lab and all, you
are determined to do the job. How many CCIE's are out there? 8000+-? I would
say from the low numbers, this exam is not easy, I have been in the field
for 7 years and just started to get my Cisco certification. I feel if I
would have started the Cisco stuff years ago, I would have not made it. The
material now is still pretty difficult to understand on some days. But, I
think the difference is, I am trying to understand it and learn it, not just
get by. I want to know the stuff inside and out. I am far from that, I know
alot of people that can take the exam, cram all week, and pass. But when it
comes to real world experience, it is over for them. Lets just weed out the
bad and let them fall on there faces. I like to help people, but if I know
this person is only a paper CXXX then I am not going to help them, it is up
to us real engineers to put these paper guys in there place, let them fall
down and you come up behind them and clean up the mess and save the day!
Happy testing!

Hi,

My two bobs worth,

Any qualification is as good as the paper it is written on. In my
experience someone with an open mind, willing to learn, has acquired
knowledge, shares knowledge and works smart in an effort to acheive
excellence is what really counts.

The paper does indicate the person has at least seen the words and knows the
lingo, probably the acromymns and often has some understanding. I have seen
many a good technical person, well qualified, knowledgable and understanding
come copletely unglued when put in a situation the person was not familiar
with. The mark of the real expert is 'the real expert will seek, ask and
find' the details. He knows how to extract the details. Paper
qualifications particularly at a degree level indicates the person can
usually do this.

I understand the pride of having a bunch of letters after your name.
Personally I don't use them although I do have a copy of some of the certs I
have gained on my wall. These are for my pride not to show others.

I have lost the pride in my qualifications because some have them and do not
share, care or attempt to understand.

Teunis,
Hobart, Tasmania
Australia

PS. I did think it strange when I read something by a Dr. Icant Remember
the name CCIE.

RE: Re:12.0.9 Enterprise Plus IOS, 25xx router

2001-03-20 Thread Louie Belt

Let me clarify, I am successfully running c2500-js-l.120-9.bin (Enterprise
Plus IOS) on all five of my Cisco 2500 series routers with 16MB Ram and 8MB
Flash installed in each. I know of 20+ others who are doing the same thing.

The image occupies 6.82 MB of the 8 MB flash. It loads very slow due to the
decompression of the image (it takes 4-5 minutes for the router to load) but
it does work quite well. 12.09 is the newest Enterprise Plus IOS that will
fit in the 8MB of RAM on a 2500. Additionally 12.09 Enterprise Plus IPSec
is too large and won't work.

Here is a screen capture from a 2501 to prove the point:

If the image you are trying to upgrade to is less than 4Mb and it is not allowing you
to do that, you may have a corrupted flash memory. Which means HW replacement.

Re: Good IOS images

2001-03-20 Thread Circusnuts

With this question IOS's- keep in mind what I still believe is the true
(correct me if I'm wrong), but the CCNA commands have not changed since it's
inception in version 11.3 If you think of the routing content of the exam,
it wouldn't matter one iota if you had 11.2,11.3, 12.0, or 12.1 The core
commands used have not changed since the "Sho" was introduced in version
10.0 (accept CDP neighbors).

Re: Guys, Help me urgently

2001-03-20 Thread EA Louie

Shahid - I'm still not clear on which interface is not showing up/up

You'll need to be much more specific for me to help...you might have a bad
serial interface on the 7000. or maybe the interface is still shutdown? Try
moving your frame relay switch configuration to serial1/3 with all the
appropriate frame relay route statements and see what happens.

It's better that you send too much information than not enough. Send the
results of these commands:

show interfaces - on the c7000
show run (or wr t) - on the c7000
write t (or show run) - on the hub router
the configuration of the router that has a down interface

here is the configuration as I understand it:
router1
  |
 s1/2
router2 - s1/0 c7000 s1/1 -- hub router3 (2 f/r maps dlci's)

now, which interface is down/down?

Make sure the cable you are using a cable with the DCE end plugged in to the
serial port. You cannot set the clock rate if the cable has the DTE end
plugged in to the Serial port.

Use the command: show controllers

I have a Cisco 4000 I just received and I can't get it to take clock on 2

Here's a copy of the config after I just typed "lock rate 56000" at the
config-if mode for serial 0.

Current configuration:
!
version 11.1
service udp-small-servers
service tcp-small-servers
!
hostname R4000

enable secret 5 $1$1ETI$xqeVrzT8qlamhBz1pI4ZA/

interface Serial0
 no ip address
 encapsulation frame-relay
 frame-relay intf-type dce
 frame-relay route 301 interface Serial1 101
!
interface Serial1
 no ip address

Without applying clock the router won't allow the dlci's to map.

Is it another improvement on the existing DHCP protocol or something =
else altogether?
Another "invention" by Microsoft?
Any links that can point me to the right direction?

Thanks for the help!

Group,

Has anyone been successful in running this version of IOS with 8MB flash and
16 MB RAM on 25xx routers ?

The download site recommends minimum of 16 MB flash and 6 MB RAM.

I was moving the cable around between ports attempting to get the serial
interfaces to stay up. I forgot about the LMI configuration on 11.1. I'm
upgrading to 12.X tomorrow then I'll try again.

Re: Secondary IP add

The why is because each interface address results in a connected route in
the routing table. You can add multiple secondary interface addresses, just
add secondary to the end of the IP address config line.

Re: Secondary IP add

2001-03-20 Thread Tony van Ree

Hi,

You might want to add a secondary address to pick up another network on the same lan.
You might for example have 16 addresses available on a network and have them on a lan.
You might increase your network by another 50 people and therefore require extra
addresses. These could be added as a secondary address range.

You might want to do it for security reasons. Have a secure subnet and a secondary
network. This would allow you to do some access-list stuff and stop users on the LAN
from accessing other devices on the LAN.

router#(config-if) ip address 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.224 secondary

Re: Dialer map v's Dialer String

2001-03-20 Thread EA LOUIE

g'day mate ;-)

everything you ever wanted to know about dialer-maps, dialer-lists, and dialer
configs is contained in http://www.cisco.com

more specifically, look at these links -
Cisco TAC ISDN Support Page
http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/Support/PSP/psp_view.pl?p=Internetworking:ISDN

sample configs for ISDN Dialing: (scroll down until you find ISDN)
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/700/configwan.html

BTW, dialer-map is the newer stuff, and more flexible in configuration.
Dialer string is how we used to have to do it (legacy commands), and required
2 B-channels which were unidirectional PPP connections.

good luck and have fun!

Re: Fwd: How to Make Frame Relay Redundant?

2001-03-20 Thread EA LOUIE

Hey Raul...

depending on how many sites you need to restore, and how much bandwidth you
need for restoral, Basic Rate ISDN is still a pretty good solution that I've
implemented before. The configuration is a little tricky and takes a keen
mind to implement successfully...but basically, the remote routers have a
floating static route to the BRI interface and it can dial the central site
backup router.

Another possible solution that I've used is to have a 2nd serial interface at
the remote site with a low speed connection to the Internet, and configure
encrypted tunnels from there to your central backup router or central site
Internet access router. Again, depending on the number of sites, that
solution might not be cost effective.

your design will have to take into account the following issues:
1. How many simultaneous circuit failures you want to cover
2. What will trigger bringing up the restoral circuit automatically (for
example, hard frame relay interface failure on the remote end, circuit
failure, loss of routes, etc.), or will it be done manually?
3. Which side of the circuit will initiate the restoral session (remote
inwards or central outwards?)
4. If automatic, whether you can disable the restoral during off-business
hours and weekends (especially for automatic ISDN restoral where long-distance
and per-minute usage charges apply)
5. How much bandwidth is necessary as a backup to keep the remote sides
productive.
6. Some sort of cost/benefit analysis based on the various possible
solutions.
7. Whether you need to limit the network access from the remote sites when
the frame relay circuit goes down (that is, maybe they're only permitted to
access corporate resources like email and intranet web servers, and deny
access to the Internet so that those pesky MP3 downloads don't hog all the
bandwidth)
8. Making sure you address all the security issues that arise from switched
or over-the-Internet restoral

Our recommended version for 25xx from Cisco is
12.0.12, and not to use 11.3. GD releases are
preferred. It is good to note that ISPs frequently
need to run all types of releases for features and
fixes, with a preferrence for GD. I don't know of many
that are successful though!

Re: Help with frame-relay switch configuration

2001-03-20 Thread Neil Schneider

Are you intending to use serial 0 and 1 as the switched ports? if so you
have a config error in that S1 points to S3 not S0. I know of no reason you
cannot put a clockrate command on S0 as well, is that the problem you are
having? I think you also need to set the LMI type for IOS 11.1

Dialer map v's Dialer String

2001-03-20 Thread John Brandis

Hi poeples,
building a test network here after boss gave me another router to play
with so I can get more cisco routing experience. (good boss huh).
Any way, I am looking at the dialer config and I would like to get some
more info on configuring dialer interface and withing that, I would like
to know the syntax for the dialer map command and if at all possible,
the benefits of it opposed to the dialer srting command.

Thanks @groupstudy members

RE: Multiple T1's

In this scenario, is it possible to use a "backup interface" command along
with "backup load" and "backup delay" commands to achieve redundancy and
load balancing? Providing that both T1's are correctly configured and are
connected to the same router?

Help with frame-relay switch configuration

2001-03-20 Thread mtxpert

I have a Cisco 4000 I just received and I can't get it to take clock on 2
interfaces at once.
Here's a copy of the config after I just typed "lock rate 56000" at the
config-if mode for serial 0.

Current configuration:
!
version 11.1
service udp-small-servers
service tcp-small-servers
!
hostname R4000
!
enable secret 5 $1$1ETI$xqeVrzT8qlamhBz1pI4ZA/
!
frame-relay switching
!
interface Serial0
 no ip address
 encapsulation frame-relay
 frame-relay intf-type dce
 frame-relay route 301 interface Serial1 101
!
interface Serial1
 no ip address
 encapsulation frame-relay
 clockrate 56000
 frame-relay intf-type dce
 frame-relay route 101 interface Serial3 301
!
interface Serial2
 no ip address
 shutdown
!
interface Serial3
 no ip address
 encapsulation frame-relay
 frame-relay intf-type dce
!
no ip classless
!
!
line con 0
 password cisco
 login
line aux 0
 modem InOut
line vty 0 4
 password cisco
 login
!
end

Without applying clock the router won't allow the dlci's to map.
This is my first attempt with a 4000 router.
Here's the version output

Re: Questions for Cisco switches

2001-03-20 Thread Frank Mendoza

Cat6k can be set up in 2 different ways:
1- Hybrid mode or
2- Native (with the Kosmos version)

The 1st one have 2 images, 1 for the switch engine (CLI commands) and 1 for the MSFC
(Router daughter card). The 2nd mode (Kosmos) only have 1 image that controls both,
switch and router engine. It will look like IOS router.

Note: I personally prefer the hybrid (less bugs).

Frank.

Free to good home: Cisco doc CDs

2001-03-20 Thread Jon

I'm still seeing folks buying documentation CDs on eBay -- some for
more than $10, then add shipping. I remember a while back, some kind
folks were offering up their spare CD sets to folks that would use them
to study.

Since we've just had a nice shipment of new Cisco toys for me to play
with (and more arriving next week), I thought I'd offer up the
resulting pile of a dozen or so Cisco doc CDs. I'll even pay for the
stamps to get it there, so only US addresses, please.

Promise you won't just turn around and try to sell it yourself on eBay,
that wouldn't be very nice. They're all 12/00 copies, if there's a
more recent CD set, I've not seen it.

Reply to this with your snail mail address, and I'll get them in the
mail by the weekend.

RE: Cat 6509 auto reload

Its actually a problem with Windows 2000 and the way the Serial port outputs
the signal

SGP... are you seeing it on W2K on that Thinkpad??

I've seen this with other Cisco switches and Dell laptops. Basically, the
laptop is sending out weird signals out the serial port during the reboot.
These weird voltages somehow screw up the catalyst, and cause it to reboot.
The only solution I've found is to disconnect the serial cable during laptop
reboots, and don't connect it to the switch until after HyperTerminal is
happily running.

Hi guys
I encountered a bizarre situation whereby the Cat 6509
is automatically reloaded after I rebooted my IBM
Thinkpad. The connection is via Thinkpad serial port
to the switch's console. At that moment, there is no
hyperterm session and the notebook is running NT4
workstation. Anyone has input on this?

Cheers

ok, not the exact situation but similar.

We built a circuit that bridges ATM with a LAN extension service.

This required a BVI on the core router. The far end was just another
Ethernet router for all intents and purposes.

Now, I haven't yet touched ISIS or clns - but when we first tried to get
OSPF working across the link it would not form an adjacency. Show ip ospf
neigh revealed EXSTART/DR on the remote router.

On the core router a bridge-group is defined and the ATM sub-interfaced
placed into it.

This immediately set the mtu for the BVI to 4470 bytes - of course we didn't
know that at the time!

On the remote router we observed "debug ip ospf adj" and one of the errors
we saw was words to the effect: "Nbr x.x.x.x has larger interface MTU"

Checked everything, saw the BVI at 4470 and changed it with the command "mtu
1500".

Pop! OSPF formed its adjacency and everything works fine.

Perhaps this is something to look into for your situation.

Re: IOS version 13.xxx ?? and a Rant...

2001-03-20 Thread Pamela Forsyth

Yipe. I just now noticed this thread, and it breaks my heart to hear
stories like this.

Global Knowledge classes are guaranteed. I'm not sure Heather could get
her money back inasmuch as she did sit the entire class, but I am certain
they will let her sit the class again with a more experienced instructor.
Hey, I'm teaching BSCN in Arlington, VA for Global Knowledge the week of
April 23 . . . not scheduled for any Texas trips any time soon.

For future reference, Global Knowledge WILL refund your money or
reschedule you if you return your materials to the instructor by the end
of the first day. Instructors are supposed to emphasize that during the
introductory remarks.

When you schedule the class, talk to the customer service people and ask
them about the instructor. The best questions to ask are, "how long has
this person been a Cisco-certified instructor," and "how many times has
this person taught this class." The instructor schedules are published
about a month in advance of the classes.

I hope you won't get a bad impression of all Global Knowledge instructors
because of this one. I have had the distinct pleasure of auditing BSCN,
CATM and OSPF/BGP classes since joining Global Knowledge, and the
instructors in each case were outstanding in every way, but beyond
outstanding in terms of technical knowledge. And I'm a tough critic,
believe me. For example, how about having CATM taught by someone who
participated in the development of the protocols as a member of the ATM
Forum working groups? Or BGP taught by someone whose consulting practice
focuses on designing networks for national ISPs. And of course, the
groupstudy.com founder, Paul Borghese, is a Global Knowledge instructor.

Re: All positions are valid - Cisco Certs Becoming Paper CCXX

2001-03-20 Thread EA LOUIE

No way, Allen... you already cashed it in about 15 messages ago on this thread
- no fair cashing in twice ;-)

and I actually think this has been a healthy thread. There seem to be these
camps, from what I've read:

1. Certs add value regardless of a person's experience in industry - it's a
willingness to learn.
2. Experience adds value and meaning to the Certs - it's an enhancement to
your experience and something that is in written recognizable form.
3. Certs get your foot into the otherwise closed, air-tight door - it's an
indication that the person is trained and knowledgeable to some extent on the
techonology, and therefore less risky to hire than a non-certified (possibly
experienced) person

Thank goodness no one has presented the argument that Certs are a bad thing
;-)

All of the positions have validity. The original poster was concerned about
VALUE DILUTION of the certs with all the folks who were "jumping on the
bandwagon" versus those of us who have been in the job and are uncertified and
working on our certs. This raised the issue of "what's more important or
holds more value... the Cert or experience?" And that's been tossed around
alot in the past 20 or so messages. Value, fortunately, lies in the eyes of
the hiring manager, so if you can convince HIM one way or another, whichever
way you want to sway it, more power to you!

(now I'm feeling like having a breath mint... hmmm.. what's up with that?
"It's two, two, two mints in one")

LOL... I should be so jolly after a one-hour rolling blackout at my office!

RE: Cisco Certs Becoming Paper CCXX

2001-03-20 Thread Brad Shifflett

Australia

PS. I did think it strange when I read something by a Dr. Icant Remember
the name CCIE.

Re: Point to Point Link Problem

2001-03-20 Thread EA LOUIE

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/itg_v1/tr1915.htm

Check your cable one more time, and make sure it's a straight-through cable to
the telco demarc (Cat 5 568A or B, or any other 1-1 2-2 ... 8-8 RJ-45 type
cable will work okay in a pinch)

You should at least be able to get up/down status if the cabling is correct.
Also, make sure telco has actually activated the circuit (that they don't have
it looped back on their end...although the internal CSU should have detected
that)

Finally, are you sure you're plugged into the correct CSU interface on the
router and at the demarc? ;-)

Let us know when you get DCD up :-)

RE: Password recovery

2001-03-20 Thread EA LOUIE

Okay then...the 3600 doesn't load its image using tftp from rommon...bummer.
try this link:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/access/acs_mod/cis3600/3600ig/3600rom.htm

and try this procedure (i'm stealing from the 2600 h/w config):

1. Type confreg 0x2142 at the rommon 1> prompt - it bypasses NVRAM
2. Reload the router. The boot ROM should have enough of an image to get the
router started. If it doesn't, then go back into rommon mode and try this
tftpdnld setup - the variable names in capital letters ARE case sensitive
replace the addresses, masks, and filenames with your own.
also, if you're loading from a pc and the IOS filename has an extension,
remember to add that, too.
(I'm not 100% positive that the 3600's supported tftpdnld...this comes from
the 2600 series hardware install manual located at

Re: IPX Help

2001-03-20 Thread jenny . mcleod

If you don't want to send RIP/SAP updates that often, you can change the
update times by
ipx update interval {sap|rip} xwhere x is in seconds - this is IOS 12.

For earlier IOS (11.2 anyway, not sure which version 11.3 uses), the commands are
ipx sap-interval x (for SAP updates - x is in minutes)
ipx update-time x (for RIP updates - x is in seconds)

An unusual instance of Cisco actually making the IOS commands more intuitive (or at
least more consistent) instead of less!

I have! (Well, thinking back, maybe it was only 128 K?) SAP stands for
Service Advertising Protocol. Cisco has spelled out the acronym incorrectly

IPX RIP sends every 60 seconds by default. IP RIP sends every 30 seconds by
default. You're thinking of IGRP when you say IGRP perhaps?

Sorry for being so picky. Your answer is right on!

Re: Multiple T1's

2001-03-20 Thread Brian

I was not talking about multilink PPP. If you have 2 t1s from office a to
office b, all you'd need for a default out on the remote office end is
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 s0
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 s1
This assumes that you already have the appropriate statics in place for
local LAN segments. If you want per packet load balancing, disable caching.
No multilink PPP required.

Re: Memory/Flash Compatibility

2001-03-20 Thread Circusnuts

No- a stick of 2500 FLASH is compatible in a ton of Cisco devices, but it
does not go the other way. 4000's,2600's, & 3600's take a different make
that will not register on a 2500. I believe their memory is slower (think
it's 80ns, while the 2500 could be as fast as 60ns).

Re: Economic downturn--Impact on Cisco Certification aspirations?

2001-03-20 Thread Tony van Ree

Hi all,

Economic downturn. I feel that with all the economic downturn the technology won't
change. If anything there will be a greater requirement for good, smart, open minded
technicians. I use the term technicians as there are lots of Information Technology
and Information Management functions involved.

Good well designed and constructed implementations or solutions will indeed help pull
some of the same companies out of the mire.

Just some thoughts

If you are running EIGRP as your routing protocol, it will take care of the
load balancing for you without the added complexity and CPU overhead of PPP
multilink.

There are some great EIGRP config guides on CCO.

Re: Password recovery

2001-03-20 Thread Kevin Wigle

interesting Cisco 3600 series routers ship with minimum 8 meg
flash the 3660 can have up to 64 meg.

Not to question whether you can tell if flash is there or not... :-)

but it sounds like you need to get a friend to ship you a flash module
with a valid IOS on it - or borrow one from another 36xx you may have
onsite.

Something similar happened to us just a while ago and we got out of it by
using a standby router. In our case the flash became corrupt - couldn't
delete it or use it in any way.

We put in into another router (sick one was a 3620 - standby was a 3640) and
was able to write to it and put it back into the sick one - now well.

In our case we had to be careful to write a 3620 IOS and not a 3640 image.

RE: Cisco Certs Becoming Paper CCXX

2001-03-20 Thread Tony van Ree

Hi,

My two bobs worth,

Any qualification is as good as the paper it is written on. In my experience someone
with an open mind, willing to learn, has acquired knowledge, shares knowledge and
works smart in an effort to acheive excellence is what really counts.

The paper does indicate the person has at least seen the words and knows the lingo,
probably the acromymns and often has some understanding. I have seen many a good
technical person, well qualified, knowledgable and understanding come copletely
unglued when put in a situation the person was not familiar with. The mark of the
real expert is 'the real expert will seek, ask and find' the details. He knows how to
extract the details. Paper qualifications particularly at a degree level indicates
the person can usually do this.

I understand the pride of having a bunch of letters after your name. Personally I
don't use them although I do have a copy of some of the certs I have gained on my
wall. These are for my pride not to show others.

I have lost the pride in my qualifications because some have them and do not share,
care or attempt to understand.

Teunis,

Australia

PS. I did think it strange when I read something by a Dr. Icant Remember the name
CCIE.

Multiple T1's

2001-03-20 Thread Jason Stephens

We have a situation where we want to have 2 t1's going to another office. We
want these 2 t1's to not
only provide redundancy in case 1 goes down, but also want them to load
balance while they are both up.
So basically, we want the two t1's to be up providing 3 mpbs of bandwidth
and if one goes down for it
to automatically send all traffic to the t1 that is still up. We have 3600
series routers on both ends. Can
this be done? If so, please explain how. I looked into the Multilink PPP
stuff, but it seems to be only for
async ports. Thanks for any info in advance!

Syngress CCDA book (off topic?) [1:2745]

2001-03-20 Thread Greg Macaulay

If I were you -- I'd buy the DCN book (Cisco Press) and read it carefully.
Also, if you have CCO access, take the COLT tests -- and take them over and
over again -- and research any answers you get wrong. I studied for the
CCDA for 14 days and took the COLT tests every morning and every night --
and three times yesterday when I took the exam (944). Lastly, review your
CCNA material -- at least a day or two. That should do it.

Greg Macaulay, MCSE, CCNP, CCDA (newly minted!) (other certs and degrees not
listed!)
The oldest CCNP/CCDA in the world!!!
Lifetime member of AARP
Don't mind my bout of bragging -- I'm still euphoric over passing the CCDA
in 14 days! I'll be back to normal by tomorrow!!

I know this list is primarily for CCNA, so hope people will excuse my asking
the question here.

At any rate, looking at various books in the bookstore, the Syngress book
seems a little more meaty than the Sybex one by Mr. Lammle. I'm wondering
if anyone has used the Syngress book for the CCDA and if so, how did they
find it. I figure I'll use that one as the "light reading" and the Cisco
Press one as the in depth book.
Again, I'm not sure if this is considered off-topic for this list--if it is,
then please accept my apologies.

TIA

RE: Point to Point Link Problem

2001-03-20 Thread Kane, Christopher A.

Do you have both ends setup with "Current clock source is line". If you do,
change one end to internal. If both are set to line and telco is not
providing you clocking, the T1 won't come up. I'm more concerned with the
fact that you have down/down. As stated below, you usually get an up/down
with good local cable connection. Is the T1 coming in on a SmartJack (NIU)?
If you can find it (should be labeled with the circuit ID), check the LEDs,
there should be an equipment light and a network light depending on the
vendor.

Check your cable one more time, and make sure it's a straight-through cable
to
the telco demarc (Cat 5 568A or B, or any other 1-1 2-2 ... 8-8 RJ-45 type
cable will work okay in a pinch)

You should at least be able to get up/down status if the cabling is correct.

Also, make sure telco has actually activated the circuit (that they don't
have
it looped back on their end...although the internal CSU should have detected
that)

Finally, are you sure you're plugged into the correct CSU interface on the
router and at the demarc? ;-)

Let us know when you get DCD up :-)

Password recovery

2001-03-20 Thread Rizzo Damian

We have a problem with our 3660 router. We forgot the enable password and
need to start from scratch and recreate the passwords. The problem is, the
router has no Flash memory, so the router only boots into Rommon mode...I
don't believe these routers have bootflash, because you can't use the "boot
tftp" command without a BOOTLDR not set error. So even after we manualy
install the IOS via X-modem and it is run in NVRAM, it loads the startup
config in memory and that just brings us back to where we were beforeA
router in which we have no enable password for. What are our options at this
point? Thank you.

RE: Good IOS images

2001-03-20 Thread Charlie Hartwell

OK, I think the words "it depends" were written specifically for this
question.

When you go to the Cisco IOS planner page look for images with the
letters "GD" after them. This means General Deployment and you'll
find a lot of ISP's and large corporates use these because they are
considered stable. Around the 12.0(13) or 11.2(22) releases should be
GD (I can't remember exactly).

On the other hand, if you are just using this for a bit of practise
at home then get the very newest image that your memory can handle
(12.2(1) should be out now) so you can play with all of the latest
shiny, spinny features that won't work properly yet.

Cheers

Re: BCMSN - exam question

I'm not sure if you have been on the BCMSN course (I hope you have if
you have a copy of the notes!) but that was certainly sufficient for
me. Of all of the CCNP exams, the BCMSN fitted the course notes the
best.
It's difficult when people ask questions like this because we don't
know how much experience they have, you could have been designing and
installing Catalyst based LAN solutions for years.

RE: Something to think about

2001-03-20 Thread Christopher Kolp

Do you ever have anything nice to say about anything besides
what you currently hold?

90% of your posts are snide comments aimed at new people
either in or trying to get in the industry. I personally
don't appreciate it and I'm sure the rest don't either.

It's one thing to say CCNA is a start on a long journey..

It's another to discredit one's accomplishments and belittle them
because they don't have 10+ years behind them.

You're right. It's the admission pass AND the rules of the game.
How many strikes. Field sizes. But it's also a great start and
teaches newbies a solid foundation in networking.

After all, the CCNA is really just an admission ticket to play in the
big
leagues. It doesn't prove that you can play or hit the ball over the
fence.

RE: Something to think about

2001-03-20 Thread Steve Smith

So is any other certification or college degree. Neither one is worth
their salt until you have the experience to work beside it. On a English
professors door at Rhodes College was a big chart that broke down
statistics. It showed that the average person with a college degree
makes $5 dollars more a year, globally, than a person without a college
degree. The difference? College teaches you to think. So go the
multitudes of certs out there. They are not there to say you are an
expert who can solve the worlds problems, they are merely there to show
you have put forth the effort to have a base understanding of how
something works...much the same as a bachelors degree. By the way I
am proud to be a CCNAand then some.

respectfully,
Steve
