~ 460,000 worldwide jobs on monster.com...

Non-US 'Cisco' = 919
Non-US 'Juniper' = 22 (Only in UK & Europe)

Guess it will be a while for the rest of the world to realise that their

I ran into this once, According to TAC, there are no show command to see
if a clp bit is set. This was as of 12.0.7. The "show atm interface atm

RE: Protocol Type 0x886F [7:3737]

2001-05-09 Thread Bill Pearch

One possible solution to this issue that was practiced early in the wolfpack
development was to have a nic in each cluster node that was connected via
cross over cable to the other node. By having a pair of NIC's dedicated to
heartbeat we can avoid having the heartbeat flood the network.

Subject: Re: Protocol Type 0x886F [7:3737]

I ran into this same problem at my current client. Apparently this is a
necessary evil in a NT clustered environment for load balancing and fault
tolerancy. There are two 1,514 byte packets sent every second by default.
One
to the MAC of the NIC and the other to the multicast address. The size of
these packets cannot be adjusted but the interval of how often they occur
can. The heartbeat can be set between 100 and 1 milliseconds (default
is
1000). The time period before the device is determined dead can be set
between
5 and 100 (default is 5).

We did the following:

Registry items alivestatus (aka AliveMsgPeriod) and aliveperiod (aka
AliveMsgTolerance) were changed to 1 and 9 respectively. What this
meant on
the network was that there were only 6 pairs of heartbeats per minute
instead
of 60.

This should be adjusted based on the organizations tolerance of a failure.

ATM command to check CLP cell [7:3959]

2001-05-09 Thread Cisco Newbie

Hi Groupstudy,

Like to check is there any command in Cisco IOS that allows me to check
whether the cell I received has the Congestion Loss Priority (CLP) bit set?

If not how could I find out whether the cells is eligible to be discard when
there is a congestionThru' Telco?

Definition of CLP: Congestion Loss Priority (CLP)---Indicates whether the
cell should be discarded if it encounters extreme congestion as it moves
through the network. If the CLP bit equals 1, the cell should be discarded
in preference to cells with the CLP bit equal to zero.

cant access WAn from PC but can from router [7:3958]

2001-05-09 Thread John Brandis

G'Day all for the second time today.
2 questions:

Question 1: I have a 4MB HDSL link coming into my 2503 serial 0 port. Can I
check the bandwidth to make sure that this is what I really have in terms of
BW...

Question 2: Have configured the router to connect to the HDSL network and the
ethernet network. That part is fine, I can access hosts on both networks
(ping) from the router. However, when I go to my workstation and I CORRECTLY
configure the IP settings, all I can access is the router and nothing over
the
WAN link. I made sure that there are NO ACL's going against me and I have the
route static route configured correctly. What can I try now /

Lab Access or Equipment for Sale? [7:3956]

2001-05-09 Thread JC

Does anyone have a lab setup that they are willing to allow access to? I am
between a rock and a hard place currently. I want to buy my own home lab,
but I need financing. My wife and I just bought a house and as such it will
be tough to fork out the cash. I have moved from a configuration role to an
analyst role and I don't work on the equipment now as much as I'd like to.
I am working towards my CCNP and I am hoping to either buy a good home lab
at a reasonable rate (Does anyone know of any IT finance companies?) Are
there any companies that will extend you credit to purchase gear?
Otherwise, I would be interested in any access that one could offer.

Thanks,

JC

Re: Central Hub Site with six T1's. [7:3841]

2001-05-09 Thread JC

Thanks for all of your help. I did not expect to get so many replys. My
intention was to respond to everyone of your replys but the days just keep
getting shorter, and more work is piling up on my desk. Qwest rules the
land in my area, and they would be the frame relay provider in this case.
Yes, I have to agree Frame Relay would be a good choice. It is a good
choice because there is less equipment cost up front at the hub site, then
there would be if I were to bring six PtoP T1's into that site. However,
the customer has requested some interest in VoIP, and I have not listened to
VoIP over Frame before so I'm not sure how well that works. Your feedback
has been very helpfull.

Thanks,

Frame Relay backup issue (clearer understanding) (long) [7:3953]

2001-05-09 Thread Mark Z.

Hi Everyone,
I know i didnt give many specs on my previous question but thats because
today was my first time out at the site. Here's what's going on there and i
believe I have the answer now for tomorrow.

They have 2 routers in the core (A=primary, B=backup). They have 18 remote
sites, most of which are cisco and there are a few remote nu-bridges (never
heard of these). My concern is with the cisco's for now. This is how they
have it set up. Each site has a primary PVC going to core_A, and has a
"backup" PVC going to core_B. I learned that the secondary is actually not a
"backup" PVC, but it is always up, so if the primary fails then that one is
still good and info will be sent to core_B and then from that to the
destination of core_A. They are using EIGRP as the routing protocol. Now,
what the issue here is: Some of the cisco branches are using the "backup"
PVC initially, even though the primary PVC is not down, basically causing
unnecesary traffic in between the 2 cores and taking 2 hops instead of one
to core_A. I got some help tonight and was told that this was more than
likely a path selection issue and setting the metrics to make the primary
PVC the more feasable route should do the trick. Also, I was told that I
could basically set the bandwidth statements for the 2 PVC's and make the
primary's higher, therefor making it the most feasable route...

Also, when doing a "show ip eigrp neighbors" command on one of the
trouble branches, I noticed this: Where the uptime for the neighbor
connection is, the Backup neighbor connection (pvc) would say up for like 5
weeks, and the Primary neighbor connection (pvc) would keep bouncing every 3
minutes or so (not the frame pvc...it's always up, but the neighbor
connection bounces). I was told that i should check out the hello timers and
make sure that they are all alike throughout the eigrp network.

Sorry this one was so long guys, I just noticed that a couple of people
took interest. If anybody has anything to add please feel free. Themore i go
in there tomorrow with the better. I have this bad feeling that all of the
above will be set correctly on the devices and I'm gonna be sitting there
with my head in my ass wondering what's next ;) Have a good one all, and
thanks,

Mark Z. ~ CCNP, CCDA (slowly realizing what it feels like to be a paper
CCNP...but working to change that)

FW: Load balancing alteon switches [7:3949]

2001-05-09 Thread Eric Rivard

The way the Alteons load balance is by a Virtual IP address. For example
if you have a website called www.mysite.com
with the IP address of 10.1.1.13 you would assign this IP address on the
Alteon as the Virtual IP address of the website www.mysite.com
. Then you would specify the real server IPs and
tie the virtual IP to the real servers IP. For example if you had 2
servers with the IP address of 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.11 they would
answer to the Alteon which would translate the IP address to the Virtual
IP address (Which is the outside address of the website). If a client
typed www.mysite .com the Alteon would get the packet and then pass it
on to the real IP of one of the servers. So to answer your question, no
you don't have to change any config on your Alteon because it load
balances at a higher layer than switches operate.

What is Ethernet emulation? It's definitely true that Ethernet is being
used across long distances, if that's what you mean. With single mode
fiber-optic cabling, Ethernet can span miles. Physical access is a
different story in this case, of course. The cables may actually be in
public places. They would be overhead on poles or underground, I guess,
though, wouldn't they?

I think it would still be very difficult to wreak havoc. Physical access
would be difficult, and even if you had it, network-layer hacking would be
hard to achieve. Wishful thinking? :-]

Thanks

Re: Central Hub Site with six T1's. [7:3841]

2001-05-09 Thread Brian

Frame relay can be really cool when your short distances. You see, if all
sites are in fact within 15mi of eachother, then they are no doubt
connecting to the same Frame Relay switch. That being said, the only
thing between the sites is the backplane of the switch.

You could get 0 CIR and still get wire speed between the sites. FR
"congestion" really is an issue mainly between FR switches, not localized
to a single switch (although on a switch that isn't non-blocking I suppose
you could get a little delay, but nothing like inter-switch traffic).

After I config a local address pool range using 'ip local pool' and 'peer

access router so that the dial-in client acquires the correct subnet mask ?

RE: CCIE prep - review lab inventory and budget [7:3908]

2001-05-09 Thread Brian Dennis

Eugene,
I don't think that your logic is correct. You think that just because
companies aren't using something in the real world that Cisco is going to
remove it from the lab. That's incorrect.

A good CCIE should know Token-Ring because there is a lot of it still out
there in the real world. Also if you don't know Token-Ring how are you going
to learn DLSw+?

Don't limit your CCIE studies to what you think is or isn't on the test.

I think you would be much better off with a 2501, 2502 and 2513 than a
2514 and 2515.2513 is a very usefull router in a CCIE lab.

Try and get a 2901 or 2926T instead of the 2924. The lab uses the Cat5000
OS, and the 2901 and 2926T both run that at an affordable price.

Re: VOIP on CCIE Lab [7:3899]

2001-05-09 Thread Brian

I say if your on a budget and building a CCIE lab, go with a 262x minimum.

Why? Because you pick up FastEthernet (ISL, dot1q, etc) at the same time.

3620 used price is like $1200-$1500
a NM-1FE for a 3600 is like $800

yet a 2620 is only about $1200 used

The 1750's FE cannot do ISL or dot1q.

In fact, i would say sell the 3620 and get a 2620 or 2621, you lose
nothing, and gain FastEthernet.

Re: Central Hub Site with six T1's. [7:3841]

2001-05-09 Thread Brian

Get a 7000 hands down.

You can buy 7000's all day long for about 700.00 a peice. Actually alot
of them I pickup for 300.00 or so each. (RP, SP or SSP, AC/Power).

FSIP8 (8 port serial blades) are about 500.00 each.

So for $1200 you are golden. Well, actually you would need a ethernet
too, so add a EIP4 for about $200-400 (Fast Ethernet is $1000.00-$1800)

You can even add an RSP7000 to the 7000, which will turn it into a 7500
basically, can use all the VIPs and PA's, just has half the backplane
speed (625MBps instead of 1300MBps).

I use 7000's and slam them with 32 serial ports each. Cost of the box is
unreal:

Cisco 7000 $ 700.00
EIP4$ 300.00
4 x FSIP8 $2000.00

So for $3k I can service 32 T1 customers, not bad

Don't forget the MC3810, which is quite nice as well

I actually find the latest 11.2 images for the 7000 to be quite good.
Especially the S train (service provider). You can do all your normal
stuff. Sure no CEF, but just about all else you need.

Usually they will let you announce for 30-90 days..just depends, to
help facilitate the move. Thats just courtesy but not a right.

Worst case you have to renumber.

What alot of ISP's will do, is renumber the core multihomed, and use
address translation outbound. So the servers have the old and new IP's
(or their is a translator doing the translation). This effectivly
blackholes the space if it were to be re-assigned, but sometimes its the
only practical reasoning.

For example, a 100,000 user ISP has 100,000 users with 100.100.100.1 as
their nameserver IP. So that company switches transit providers and
loses the provider IP space assigned to them. So they simply take
incoming requests from users to 100.100.100.1 and translate to the new
200.200.200.1 for example, and the customers know no better. You can do
this inside your network.

RE: CCIE prep - review lab inventory andbudget [7:3908]

2001-05-09 Thread Tim Medley

Please don't be offended. I have all used, second-hand gear in my home
lab. I paid $400 for one 2502 and $450 for another one.

I have eight routers in my home lab, several 3102's running 12.0 IOS
that I picked up for $50 each. I don't dispute that if you shop around
and look for the best bargains that you can get some pretty good deals.
I was just commenting that based on your proposed lab equipment list,
you would be hard pressed to buy all of that for only $4000.

good luck

some used gears is cheaped than what you think they would be,buddy. i
got a 2503 for just about $422,and it works very well.(that price
includes a pair of dce/dte cable and a AUI-10BT transceiver)

Unless you find some routers that "fell off a truck" I don't think $4000
will carry you quite that far. But good luck.

I'm getting ready (or in Texas, I'd be "a-fixin to git ready") to build
a
CCIE
lab prep setup, both for personal use and for the use of my local
studygroup.
Here's what I've identified - if I'm missing anything, please let me
know.

Here's the strategy I'm going to take for the equipment:

1-2511 --- console server (w/ octal cable)
1-2503 --- ISDN
1-2504 --- ISDN
1-2514 - dual eth
1-2515 - dual t/r
1-4000 w/NP-4T and NP-1E or NP-2E, and a BRI interface or two if they
exist
(F/R switch)
1-2924-XL
teltone isdn simulator
3 token ring MAUs
3 token ring media filters
4 AUI-10BT transceivers
4 Ethernet hubs
6 60-pin DTE-DCE cables
a bunch of Cat5 cables
rack
rackmount kits (or shelves)
and a partridge in a pear tree ;-)

I'm budgeting about $4000 and if an additional 2501 falls into my
possession
by accident,
so be it ;-)

That should provide most of what's needed and enough of the interface
types
required to
practice configurations (especially desktop protocols and iBGP/eBGP).
I'd
love a Cat5k too, but I can't do it on this budget.

What do you think about this parts list? Pretty good for a start?
Think
it's
achievable with $4000?

Re: CCIE prep - review lab inventory and budget [7:3908]

2001-05-09 Thread Circusnuts

I gotta agree with Tim... You were OK until you mentioned a budget of &4,000

Give you an idea:
(2) 3102 1 Serial/ 1 Ethernet
(1) 3104 (S/T 64K BRI)
(1) 3204 (S/T 64K BRI)
(1) 3101 2 Ethernet
(2) 4500's 4 Serial/ 2 Ethernet/ 2 Token
(1) Cat5k Sup1/ 12 Fast Ethernet
(1) 2924
(1) 2511
(1) Teltone TLS-4 "Phone Simulator" (for Dial back-up) with a couple of US
Robitics modems

With the rack & cables, I probably have between $10,000 & $12,000. I still
have yet to buy the ATM interfaces or the ISDN simulator.

The AS is yours forever.

You do not inform the Internet, you simply drop the one transit provider,
and bring a BGP session up with the new one..

If you add a third transit AS, then you just bring up a session, then when
you announce via that new provider everyone will be aware it is a path to
you. BGP is quite simple as far as making changes and adds like that.

Now changing your AS...well, that can get ugly if you have lots of
peers and stuff going on :)

Re: CCIE prep - review lab inventory and budget [7:3908]

2001-05-09 Thread Circusnuts

Token Ring is just another stumbling block to add to the mix, but... I'm
guessing you'll see a lot more Token Ring from Cisco. Appearantly- they
have purchased the rights from IBM & are planning to market a 100 Meg secure
Ethernet/ Token Switched network solution.

some used gears is cheaped than what you think they would be,buddy. i got

pair of dce/dte cable and a AUI-10BT transceiver)

I'm getting ready (or in Texas, I'd be "a-fixin to git ready") to build
a
CCIE
lab prep setup, both for personal use and for the use of my local
studygroup.
Here's what I've identified - if I'm missing anything, please let me
know.

Here's the strategy I'm going to take for the equipment:

1-2511 --- console server (w/ octal cable)
1-2503 --- ISDN
1-2504 --- ISDN
1-2514 - dual eth
1-2515 - dual t/r
1-4000 w/NP-4T and NP-1E or NP-2E, and a BRI interface or two if they
exist
(F/R switch)
1-2924-XL
teltone isdn simulator
3 token ring MAUs
3 token ring media filters
4 AUI-10BT transceivers
4 Ethernet hubs
6 60-pin DTE-DCE cables
a bunch of Cat5 cables
rack
rackmount kits (or shelves)
and a partridge in a pear tree ;-)

I'm budgeting about $4000 and if an additional 2501 falls into my
possession
by accident,
so be it ;-)

That should provide most of what's needed and enough of the interface
types
required to
practice configurations (especially desktop protocols and iBGP/eBGP).
I'd
love a Cat5k too, but I can't do it on this budget.

What do you think about this parts list? Pretty good for a start?
Think
it's
achievable with $4000?

check you console settings - should be 9600 baud, 8-bit data, no parity and
1 stop bit.

maybe try a different cable - you do have a flat black or light blue one
don't you?

Re: CEF Question [7:3891]

2001-05-09 Thread andyh

going to stick my neck out here and have a go:

show adjacency - gives, I think, the adjacent (ie connected) nodes for which
there is an ARP-cache entry. This presumably is a cache of L2 FIB entries,
regardless of protocol.

show ip cef adjacency - gives routable prefixes (probably cef-forwardable
prefixes), with next-hop addresses. presumably there are equivalent "sh ipx
cef adj" commands, and maybe for other protocols also

I can't find any meaningful documentation about this - seems a little vague.
Adding a "detail" to the above commands gives a little more information - sh
adj det seems to show on the L3-L2 mapping of connected nodes, whilst sh ip
cef adj det seems to concentrate on the L3-adjaceny mappings.

Here's the strategy I'm going to take for the equipment:

1-2511 --- console server (w/ octal cable)
1-2503 --- ISDN
1-2504 --- ISDN
1-2514 - dual eth
1-2515 - dual t/r
1-4000 w/NP-4T and NP-1E or NP-2E, and a BRI interface or two if they
exist
(F/R switch)
1-2924-XL
teltone isdn simulator
3 token ring MAUs
3 token ring media filters
4 AUI-10BT transceivers
4 Ethernet hubs
6 60-pin DTE-DCE cables
a bunch of Cat5 cables
rack
rackmount kits (or shelves)
and a partridge in a pear tree ;-)

I'm budgeting about $4000 and if an additional 2501 falls into my
possession
by accident,
so be it ;-)

That should provide most of what's needed and enough of the interface
types
required to
practice configurations (especially desktop protocols and iBGP/eBGP).
I'd
love a Cat5k too, but I can't do it on this budget.

What do you think about this parts list? Pretty good for a start?
Think
it's
achievable with $4000?

2001-05-09 Thread Eugene Nine

So whats so special about the 3920? The only thing I see is Joken ring.
I'm just starting my CCNP so IE is realistically a year out. Do you think
with the rate companies are ditching joken ring gear it will still be on the
test by then. Crapple talk has gone pretty much gone away.

Channelize E1 balance or unbalance [7:3919]

2001-05-09 Thread Cisco Newbie

Hi Groupdstudy,

I have a number of sites running ISDN PRI E1. But some of our Channelize E1
card is balance and some of them is unbalance.

Can someone highlight to me what is the differece between them? Most of our
ISDN switch type is primiary-net5. Can I use balance/unbalance on this
switch?..

Thanx a million

RE: Printing Boson Exams and a ringing endorsement [7:3447]

2001-05-09 Thread Dennis Laganiere

I think that's how it normally works. I've written some test for them and
one of the things I really like about Boson products is that my question
database can evolve over time. When people write me about something they
didn't understand or that isn't clear, I can change it and the update is
available free to anybody who does the update. When I learn something new,
I can incorporate that in the database as well. I don't know about the
other authors, but I make changes every week or so.

You did not mention it, but I assume you have sub interfaces with ISL
encapsulation on
the routers , the same as the VLAN os the switches..

What happens when you do a "sh stan" from each router ?

Re: Central Hub Site with six T1's. [7:3841]

2001-05-09 Thread John Hardman

Hi

OK I am a little confused here, you say "Frame relay is not an option
because all of the sites are within about __15 miles__ of the central site I
have chosen as their hub, and their bandwidth needs are such that a T1 is
feasible."

So does this mean that you think FR is not an option because all of the
sites are a short distance away from the hub site?

If this is your answer... FR can be done between floors of a building, just
because they close doesn't mean that you can not use it. In fact in it is
cheaper than doing to another state for example.

If your customer is truly short on cash to do this, then putting in 6 point
to point T1's is going to be WAY more expensive than FR. In most markets a p
to p T1 is more per month than the equivalent FR line, not to mention the
cost of a router to handle 6 T1's is going to be quite a bit more than one
that can handle 6 PVCs.

Re: Central Hub Site with six T1's. [7:3841]

2001-05-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Others have commented on the hardware options for 6 * T1s, if that's what
you want.
I don't know what is available wherever you are, and at what cost, but here
it is possible to get frame relay at up to 44 Mbps access speed (2 Mbps
increments above 2 Mbps). Runs on a HSSI interface. If that's available
to you, it may be more cost-effective than multiple T1s.
Also, if all your sites are within 15 miles, you could run 1000BaseZX over
fibre. This is very unlikely to be cost-effective, but hey, if you happen
to have access to cheap fibre, it means you won't run out of bandwidth in a
hurry :-)

I also would consider frame relay as a choice, you can get it up to full
t1 speed, the cost is often lower than t1, and telco monitors them more
closely. If you are committed to separate t1s, and the possibility of
bringing in an isp link and bgp peering pops up, you'll want a beefy 3600
or 7204vxr.

2001-05-09 Thread Eugene Nine

Here's what I have so far:
2524 w/ 1 4 in one module
2516
2507
2 DTE cables and 1 DCE cable
all above for $1843 (bought it all in one purchase because I had $1900 to
spend)
One 10U desktop rack $55

Next I'm thinking one of the access servers to setup the reverse telnet
deal.

Re: CCIE prep - review lab inventory and budget [7:3908]

2001-05-09 Thread No Data

Budget more. The teltone will run you around $1500
methinks. You might want to try a 500-CS (or is it
CS-500?) series access server instead of a 2511. A
2522(or 2523) would be nice to set up as a frame relay
switch and try a 2901 instead of the 2924-XL as a
switch. On the equipment list is also a 3900 series
token ring switch which used to be an olicom 8600,
that might be real nice to have. Judging by the
prices on ebay (which from what I have found are
usually market for used cisco stuff) you probably need
to budget $7,000 to $8,000 and another $1,500 to
$1,800 for the 3900 (unless you get lucky and find an
actual olicom 8600 which might go cheaper as it
doesn't say cisco on it). Also you are missing voice
capabilities which I have heard shows up on one of the
labs. ATM is missing as well (in my lab we solved
that with a 3COM frame relay/ATM access concentrator,
though I don't remember specifics off the top of my
head right now). I've been going with 2502s instead
of 2501s due to price and the fact that im pretty
familiar with ethernet at this point. For the console
server you might also want to consider a Xylan 1800
(or 1600 with software) or a Digi Portserver. Both
would be much cheaper than a 500-CS (or is it CS-500,
you make the call:) though the cabling wants to make
me puke (im still trying to find a cat5 cable with 10
wires instead of 8, maybe im just not looking in the
right places. You might be able to save some money
with a POTS simulator and async ports for a while and
still do most of the dialer configs instead of all the
ISDN stuff as ISDN routers and simulator. Take a look
at ccbootcamp's lab(s) and model off their equipment.

My lab is as follows
(2) 2502
(1) 1750, serial, voice, BRI
(2) 1720, 1 serial each
(1) AccessPro somethingorothernotallthatuseful
(1) HUB
(3) Linux boxes for tftp, ntp, snmp, and traffic
(1) Frame relay/ATM thingybobber
(1) Xylan 1800 maybe will be swapped with Digi
Portserver 8

What will be added later this summer
(1) 5000, Sup1, 24 ports
(1) 3920
(1) Async ports on 1720s
(1) 1750, serial, voice, BRI
(1) 2523 (for a frame switch)
(1) POTS simulator
(1) lots of modems and csu/dsu just because

I have a similar setup, here's what mine cost me (without shipping)-

2501- $550
2502- $404
2503- $630
2504- $540
2511- $900
2523- $900
Cat1800 Token Switch- $300
4000 w/2 ethernet, 1 token, 2 serial, 4 BRI- $1000
ISDN Simulator- $1800

Total- $7024 (without shipping)

I bought all of my equipment from ebay. Where are you planning on buying
yours from? Also, why would you need 4 hubs when you have a switch? You
could easily make the switch act like a number of hubs by creating VLANS.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

Re: CCIE prep - review lab inventory and budget [7:3908]

2001-05-09 Thread Jon

I originally built my lab with several 25xx units, and a 4500 as a central
switch. I started out with them stacked on a cheap shelving unit, and
when I found a small rack for free, moved them into it. You can do a lot
of playing with three or four 25xx routers and a few cables. Add the 4000
with some serial interfaces, and you can pretty much play with all the
LAN/WAN configs you'll need to see, except ATM and ISDN. Note that memory
limitations will keep you from running IOS versions that provide
IPX/AT/DEC interfaces. You can add 16mb DRAM fairly cheaply, and by
compressing the IOS, you can get an enterprise or desktop image to boot
from a small flash.

The 2509/2511 is pretty handy, if not crucial to getting quick at
configuring multiple routers. I'd suggest getting several 2513/2514
routers, as that allows you to play with both TR and ethernet. I don't
know that having TR or Eth on the 4000 is necessary, but if it happens to
come in the 4000, so be it. The 2501/2502 boxes only give you one LAN
interface, so they aren't as useful as the 2513/2514, so unless it's a
great deal, buy the boxes with the most interfaces. :)

Add some TR MAUs (IBM 8228s are pretty cheap) and cables, some cheap eth
hubs or crossover cables & transceivers, and you've got LAN segments. Add
some cheap TR & eth NICs to a cheap Linux or windoze box, and you can use
freeware sniffers to actually see the packets on the LAN. Get more
DCE/DTE wan crossover cables than you have routers, so you can play with
load balancing, and more complex networks. There's lots of TR gear
getting ripped out of businesses right now, and most of it ends up in the
dumpster. Make friends with a local networking company, you might get all
the NICs, MAUs, and cables that you can haul away.

I would choose not to buy ISDN hardware, simply because the ISDN simulator
eats half your budget -- you can rent the rack time you need to cover ISDN
(and ATM), as needed. With rolled console cables connected to AUX ports,
you can practice DDR and backup interfaces, but you'll need to actually
configure ISDN a few times, and debug it, to see the gory details of ISDN.
For the price of the ISDN switch, you could get another three 25xx
routers, which allows you to run more complex scenarios. Just my opinion,
of course.

Likewise, the Catalyst 2901/5000 can be a bit pricey, for the limited
things you'll be able to do with it. If you wanted to do VLAN/ISL/dot1q
configs, you'll need a fast ethernet interface on a router, which the 25xx
boxes don't do. The 2924xl switch is nice to play with, but it won't give
you anything specific to configure, without more expensive hardware to
connect it to (4500 or 26xx with FastEth). You can rent access to a
Catalyst equipped rack, or get access to one of Neil's Kitty labs, or just
buy the Cisco Mentor for Lan Switching which contains a switch lab
simulator, as well as tutorials for learning switching (I think it's still
the old CLSC course materials).

If you're thinking about VoIP, that's another chunk of change to part
with. Again, you can rent rack time or use the CIM VoIP to get the skills
and practice. I bought an 827-4v to use as my DSL modem, and it came with
four FXS/FXO ports to play with. Without a PBX in your lab, that's about
all you'd be able to configure, anyway, even if you had a bigger VoIP
router to play with.

Take all this with the requisite NaCl grain -- everyone's lab is
different. Mine's mutated several times, as I found good deals on gear,
got interested in playing with specific things, and got bored with some of
the gear. When I took a job with a company with a huge (=fubar) network,
less stuff became critical to have in the lab. When you spend the day
troubleshooting SNA/SRB, ATM, and Token Ring, you don't really need it at
home. :P

CCIE prep - review lab inventory and budget [7:3908]

2001-05-09 Thread EA Louie

I'm getting ready (or in Texas, I'd be "a-fixin to git ready") to build a
CCIE
lab prep setup, both for personal use and for the use of my local studygroup.
Here's what I've identified - if I'm missing anything, please let me know.

Here's the strategy I'm going to take for the equipment:

1-2511 --- console server (w/ octal cable)
1-2503 --- ISDN
1-2504 --- ISDN
1-2514 - dual eth
1-2515 - dual t/r
1-4000 w/NP-4T and NP-1E or NP-2E, and a BRI interface or two if they exist
(F/R switch)
1-2924-XL
teltone isdn simulator
3 token ring MAUs
3 token ring media filters
4 AUI-10BT transceivers
4 Ethernet hubs
6 60-pin DTE-DCE cables
a bunch of Cat5 cables
rack
rackmount kits (or shelves)
and a partridge in a pear tree ;-)

I'm budgeting about $4000 and if an additional 2501 falls into my possession
by accident,
so be it ;-)

That should provide most of what's needed and enough of the interface types
required to
practice configurations (especially desktop protocols and iBGP/eBGP). I'd
love a Cat5k too, but I can't do it on this budget.

What do you think about this parts list? Pretty good for a start? Think
it's
achievable with $4000?

Re: 2610 w/ an additional 1e 2w module [7:3402]

2001-05-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hey Jason Thanks for your help...Now all I have to do is get rid of the
1E2W card..

And i should be in business for my frame switch... Well actually right
now I
can still use one of the wic cards & place it in the fixed slot... the
other fixed slot
is occupied by a smart serial dual port card...so i still have 3 serial
ports for the frame stuff...

I'd rather have @ least 4 though...

Again thanks for all your help guy's !!!

Randy.

BGP - Load Balancing [7:3903]

2001-05-09 Thread Rashid Lohiya

My first BGP project and I am lost!

I am looking for a brief overview of how load balancing is configured using
BGP Multi-homed connections.

I thought a company with 2 ISP connections would use one link and have the
other available as backup only. But from what I understand from the client
request, they are expecting to load balance in some way over both links.

I don't need the specific configs, just the rough guidelines/pitfalls, so
that I can work out where to begin my research.

Any takers?

Re: Changing ISPs [7:3831]

2001-05-09 Thread andyh

depends if you use PI or PA space:

PI - Provider Independant space, this if effectively "owned" by your AS -
believe it used to be called "mobile", although there are still restraints
regarding global routability if you wish to move it between continents -
some Tier-1 ISP will filter on intercontinental links based on the
route-registry origin (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, etc.

PA - Provider Allocated (or Assigned I can never remember which way around
the route-registries label these things). This is allocated/assigned to you
from your provider, from one of their own aggregate block, and you cannot
"take it with you" if you leave that ISP.

Generally PI space is preferred, there should be no problem routing this
through any provider, and you can move with impunity (subject to
restrictions on moves of an inter-continental nature, as per above). All
you need to ensure this that your routing policy, and that of your upstream,
with the appropriate registry is correct.

PA space is more tricky, and is at the discretion of your "secondary"
provider(s). Some do, some don't - try your luck ;-) It is "legal" to
route a more-specific prefix of a provider's aggregate block - I had a chat
to RIPE about this a while back, and although not documented, they are keen
to lessen the amount of PI space they give out. The difference here is that
although you are advertising a route that is included in your provider's
aggregate prefix, you are advertising a different prefix, and as BGP works
on a per-prefix basis it doesn't discriminate between the overlapping
routes.

hope that makes sense

Re: Encapsulation V-LAN [7:3798]

2001-05-09 Thread andyh

if you have a Cisco-only switch architecture I would use ISL between the
Catalysts - per-vlan STP is *VERY* useful for resilience and load-balancing
purposes.

I would use dot1q for attached servers where necessary - since they are
end-stations there is not the requirement for them to participate int STP.

my #0.02 (is 0.02 UK pounds worth more than $0.02?)

Re: HSRP running on subinterface of 2651 [7:3800]

2001-05-09 Thread andyh

I have set this up on 2/362X/5Xs without any trouble, using ISL rather than
dot1q, although can't imagine it would make any difference.

what do you not have connectivity to? try extended pings between the real
and vitrual interfaces on the routers with the appropriate subinterface as
the source address

can you post router interface configs and a "show standby brief"? Also
trunk config(s) and a "show vlan" and "sh vtp domain" from the switch(es)?

VOIP on CCIE Lab [7:3899]

2001-05-09 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Hi Guys,

Can anyone suggest the minimum hardware requirements to practise the VOIP
bits on the CCIE labs.

I am thinking of buying the cards, but there is so much out there and I am
truly confused.

My friend has suggested I buy myself 2 x 1750's with DSP and FXS cards and I
should be able to configure and test end-to-end voice connectivity. He said
this was the cheapest option for me. I am just looking for a 2nd opinion.

I have a 1000, 4 x 2500's and a 3620 router.

Any other ideas, I am on a pretty tight budget.

RE: Encapsulation V-LAN [7:3798]

2001-05-09 Thread Michael Cohen

Since ISL is Cisco's proprietary protocol it seems that support for new
technologies are supported for ISL before 802.1Q on Cisco devices. For
instance, Cisco's MPLS/Tag-Switching requires CEF on all MPLS enabled
interfaces. CEF switching was supported for ISL since 12.0 however 802.1Q
just recently became supported in 12.1T and unreliably at that. I agree
with you that eventually ISL will go away but not in the immediate future.

Cheers,

I would say use dot1q everywhere.
ISL will disappear at some point in the future. Big overheads compared to
dot1q.
Anybody have any valid reasons to stay with ISL?

Both the VPN3000 series and the CSS11000 series started their life as
non-Cisco products (they were Altiga and Airopoint; I have both in my
network still with the old face-plates even though I bought them from Cisco
:-)

I am not aware of any 'native' Cisco products that support VRRP.

I have a 3620. It seems to power up okay, but I dont see anything on the
screen and when I type I see nothing. I dont know if it is just not booting
up or if there is a problem with the console port. I tried to boot into ROM
monitor mode, but that was also unsuccessful.

I would say use dot1q everywhere.
ISL will disappear at some point in the future. Big overheads compared to
dot1q.
Anybody have any valid reasons to stay with ISL?

Re: 3620 with 2 x NM-2FE-2W problem [7:3687]

2001-05-09 Thread Gareth Hinton

Thanks Kevin. I had another dig at work today and found a page that said
they should work. Read through yours tonight (some of which, after another
search today I still didn't find), and one of them contradicts. It went to
TAC today. I'll have a look at the 'show pci hardware' in the morning.
I'm in two minds as to whether this can be the problem (or possibly half a
mind :-)). Whichever module is put in first works. I don't know whether this
rules out a bus problem or not.
I'll post Cisco's answer when it arrives.

Thanks again,

Gaz

RE: CCDA [7:2971]

2001-05-09 Thread Greg Macaulay

Kevin--

My reply was intended to be with humor -- totally!!! If my words did not
convey that == I really do apologize

I'm no authority on any of this -- I was simply taking time out from my
studying to "play" a bit.

Again, no harm was intended. I'll try and be more careful with my words in
the future.

Gee, I don't what kind of backlog you have in reading this list but I
thought it was agreed that yes it has changed.

Another poster confirmed as much in her posting (I'll let you find it in the
archives) with information from a different source. Actually that post is
farther down this very same email that you forwarded to the list.

And I think I can remember that Priscilla commented that that change was
before her CCDA time, I could be wrong on that.

So, why are you picking on me? I thought things were going along great with
just the right amount of humour. Of course if you didn't recognize the
humour I apologize.

So I guess you're saying that she is wrong also (the other poster of course)
.. well so be it if that makes you happy. At least I'm not alone.

In retrospect it is becoming far too easy to get into spats on this list.

And thank-you for your compliment on my age..

Priscilla--

I know it doesn't matter anymore -- as I just said to Kevin W. I was simply
taking time out from CCIe studies to "play" a bit. I certainly didn't
intend for any of my words to be taken seriously. I am not an authority on

I didn't write any version of the CCDA exam. Testing design with
multiple-choice questions and oversimplified case studies wasn't my idea!
;-)

I wrote the Designing Cisco Networks Version 1.0 class. (I called it
Designing Scalable Networks, actually.) It was an HTML-based class for
internal Cisco Systems Engineers. It was simplified because the
prerequisites to becoming a Cisco SE were already really high and the class
didn't need to spell out the details. A lot of the materials were job aids
-- charts that SEs could print and carry around in their pocket protectors
-- not something that should EVER be asked in a "closed book"
multiple-choice test.

Somebody else turned my class into the certification program and it took on
a life of its own, one that makes me cringe to be honest. Kids are like
that.

I thought CCDA never required CCNA but really I have no idea whether that's
right. It doesn't matter anymore.

Re: Protocol Type 0x886F [7:3737]

2001-05-09 Thread Darren Crawford

What this
meant on
the network was that there were only 6 pairs of heartbeats per minute instead
of 60.

This should be adjusted based on the organizations tolerance of a failure.

Kent,

If you look at my original message you will see that it says about How tos,
which means Not to give away information that would help dishonest people.

Discussion among Security, and IS professionals, I agree with. But that is
what CERN, ISS, Bugtraq etc are for. I should have been more clear, but I
was studying at 3AM last night. Do you know what Social Engineering means.

I believe the U.S. Gov. was trying to shut down, these Security sites that
give away information on how to do things that compromise networks.

They are very concerned about Information warfare, and rightly so.

Re: Central Hub Site with six T1's. [7:3841]

2001-05-09 Thread Brian

I also would consider frame relay as a choice, you can get it up to full
t1 speed, the cost is often lower than t1, and telco monitors them more
closely. If you are committed to separate t1s, and the possibility of
bringing in an isp link and bgp peering pops up, you'll want a beefy 3600
or 7204vxr.

RE: ATM AAL5 errors [7:3682]

Is cell-scrambling enabled? On both ends?

-Original Message-

Subject: Re: ATM AAL5 errors [7:3682]

#1. The source device encapsulates whatever traffic it has to send in a
AAL5 PDU then segments the PDU and places the pieces of the PDU into the
payload of the ATM cells.

#2. AAL5 is almost always is used in UBR (unspecified bit rate) calls.
ie: No garuntee from the carrier that they will deliver your cell to
the destination.

#3. During times of congestion the carrier will drop cells in a UBR
call.

#4. If a cell (or cells) are dropped within the carrier's network; the
AAL5 PDU's CRC will be invalid.

#5. There is a EOF (end of frame) bit within the Cell header; which
tells the destination when it has recieved the last cell comprising the
AAL5 PDU.

#6. If the EOF cell is lost then the destination will try to recombine
2 (or more) AAL5 PDUs possibly resulting in a PDU that is too large.

OR

If the only cell comprising a AAL5 PDU made it through the network was
the EOF cell then the destination will find that the reassembled AAL5
PDU is smaller than the min allowed

This is a Breif overwiew of what ATM does and why you'll see AAL5
errors.
There are always ifs and buts and a million little details; BUT I won't
get into those

PS: if the errored AAL5 frames are not over 1% then don't worry about
it.

Re: CCIE or CCDA. CID [7:3795]

2001-05-09 Thread Sean C.

Upon the advice of posts here and at other sites, I decided to knock out my
CCDP before taking the CCIE written. After taking both tests (and passing)
I agree with the reasoning. The CID is extremely similar to the CCIE
written. I studied for a month for the CID but only needed two weeks of
studying (after passing the CID) for the CCIE written (bridging, RIF's, you
know the story...) Nothing was on the CCIE written that I felt was used for
the CID exclusively (i.e. didn't need to study for the CCIE). I also agree
with what Robert writes about the CCDP - not really recognized yet but
that's what makes it alluring.

Good luck,

RE: security opinions please [7:3666]

2001-05-09 Thread Michael Cohen

Agreed. The question doesn't relate directly to a 6509 but more towards the
security of VLAN's and the separation of broadcast domains via software.
>From there depending on your perspective the focus changes to the specific
flaws and exploits relating to the subject of VLANs (optimistic view) or to
the higher level view which includes the history of security exploits in
general and the risks associated in relying on software versus hardware
(pessimistic view). Although I like to think I'm somewhat security savvy
I've always been a geek at heart trying to play with the latest and greatest
in speed and features with a casual glance in the security direction.
Although I still stand by my opinion of using a 6509 with both internal and
external VLANs, I think most people focused strictly on security would agree
with Kent...

Perhaps I wasn't clear, so let me re-phrase:

"Suppose the code running on the Catalyst 6509 switch has a bug
that causes VLAN failures of various sorts."

In the configuration that started this thread, this could lead to
external networks having direct access to internal networks. This
is completely different from any layer 3 problems, but the core
issue is that if you setup your security perimeter to rely on lots of
things being configured correctly and lots of software not having
bugs, your asking for trouble.

The question was about a 6509, but the problem is more generic.
Simply asking "is there a specific problem with the 6509 and
VLANs" misses the point entirely.

Kent

Kids are like that.

I thought CCDA never required CCNA but really I have no idea whether that's
right. It doesn't matter anymore.

Priscilla

Re: CCDA [7:2971]

2001-05-09 Thread Kevin Wigle

Querying the FR Switch for DLCIs [7:3863]

2001-05-09 Thread Barry Kiesz

Is there a command on a Cisco router to query a FrameRelay switch to find
out which DLCIs are pointed to it?
