Re: Home lab - 2523 [7:27788]

2001-12-12 Thread Cisco Nuts

Hello,
I have a 2514 and a 2523 that I am selling for $1300.00 + SH. The 2514 has
2 serials and 2 ethernets and the 2523 comes with 8 serials along with a TR
and ISDN port. Along with the router, you get 2 Cisco console cables, 2 AUI
transceivers and 2 Cisco original V.35 DTE/DCE cables along with CAT5
cables. Let me know if you are interested.
Sincerely,

Hey gang,

Servers database became corrupt thus preventing messages from being sent

have shipped more memory to InFlow. Lon has agreed to install it for us.
This should help. So by the way, the server will be down for a little

The truth is we desperately need some better equipment. Currently we are
using a server I built for $500 dollars two years ago. I purchased a used
Dell Server but need to upgrade the RAID array and a few other things before
putting it online.

Take care,

NTP ? for Switches [7:28904]

I'm trying to set the ntp server on a 3548, and even though I enter it as a
dns hostname, it keeps resolving and putting in the ip address when I do a
show config. When I do this on 65xx's, and 55xx's (granted, different IOS),
it keeps the hostname. Does anyone know of a way to have it use the
hostname instead of an ip address on a 3548?

Re: bgp timer ? [7:28906]

2001-12-12 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

Hi,
In a training senario ,
ensure that BGP traffic is only seen every 10
minutes
It's about the BGP keepalive , right ?
timers bgp keepalive holdtime

If Frame-Relay is down , ISDN will back up FR , at
this time , should BGP be more quiet ?

Thanks !

Ben

The writer of this scenario doesn't understand BGP. Yes, you could
change the keepalive to 10 minutes or so. Indeed, many ISPs turn off
BGP keepalive and rely on TCP or the physical layer. All that would
affect, however, is BGP keepalives, not any other messages.

What the author doesn't seem to understand is that if your BGP peer
has something significant to send you, such as a route announcement
or withdraw, it is obliged to send that once it knows the
information, subject to some specialized constraints such as
MinRouteAdvertisement, which you may not even be able to change
without code access.

As far as whether FR going down and ISDN coming up should affect BGP,
it would depend how you have the BGP peering configured. If both
media lead to the loopback interface and TCP doesn't see a
connectivity failure, then BGP shouldn't care. If, however, the
peers are associated with specific interfaces and the interface goes
down, basic BGP logic is that you MUST announce withdrawals of all
routes affected by that interface.

Re: GroupStudy we have a problem.... [7:28901]

2001-12-12 Thread John Neiberger

Paul,

Is there some mechanism by which we could donate money toward the
purchase of new equipment? I can see that may cause more headaches than
it's worth but I thought I'd ask. I think if a lot of the people who
use this *free* service would chip in a little bit we'd be able to get
some pretty nice stuff.

What do you think, is that even feasible? What about paid memberships
to the professional and CCIE list? I *know* that would create a lot of
hassles, as well, so it's probably not even worth considering. However,
a few thousand people paying $2.99/month or whatever would make the
required equipment upgrades quite a bit easier!

Regards,
John

RE: CCIE written questions [7:28862]

2001-12-12 Thread Dan Lockwood

I'm relatively new to this group, but having passed the written exam,
seeing this question makes me sick. As others have suggested, and I
completely agree, do your own research and learn the material. That is
what the CCIE program is about. I have invested many, many hours
studying books and working in the lab to gain the knowledge required by
the program. This type of behavior cheapens the CCIE certification for
everyone involved. I made a commitment to the CCIE program because I
understood Cisco to protect the investment made by its canidates. I
hope that this has not changed. Furthermore I hope that this group does
not support this type of behavior.

Dear CCIEs,

I failed in the CCIE written exam today and, I recall some questions
here
but can't find the correct answer. Do please help me figure out the
correct
answer and give me your explain. Great thanks!

1.. In a token ring environment, what is allowed regarding early token
release?

A. More than one token can circulate the ring at any
given
time, but only one data frame is allowed.

B. More than one data frame can circulate the ring at
any
given time, but only one token is allowed.

C. More than one data frame and more than one token can
circulate the ring at any given time.

D. A station releases a free token after stripping the
frame
from the ring

E. A station can transmit early without waiting for a
token
to be released from its neighbor.

2.What is the best description of poison reverse?

A. It is a procedure used by OSPF to remove a network
from
the OSPF area.

B. Once a connection disappears, the router advertising
the
bad network will send an update from this network indicating an infinite
cost.

C. The specific network is not sent out again on the
interface it was received on.

The network is sent back out on the interface it was received on, but
with a
metric of one more than the metric in the receive update.

3.In FDD, the characteristics of !04B/5B Encoding!1 include:
(multiple
answer)

A. Sending 4 bits of informations using a 5 bit symbol.

B. Increasing the clock rate of the transmitter and
receiver
to 125Mhz, which establishes an effective data rate of 100Mbps.

C. Increasing the distance between two FDDI stations to
more
than 2km, when using multi-mode fiber.

D. Providing a workaround for the optical Bypass Relay.

4.Examine the following:

Based on the information above, which OSPF configurations listed are
valid?
(multiple answer)

A. router A

router OSPF 1

network 14.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 area 0

router B

router OSPF 1

network 14.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 area 0

network 14.1.1.0 0.0.0.255 area 0

router B

network 14.1.0.0 0.0.255.255 area 0

5.In reorganization, OSPF areas are realigned. Is this a valid
network
design? If not, what changes could be made to the network and/or router
configurations?

A. No changes are necessary.

B. A virtual link could be configured between Area 60
and
area 0.

C. A serial line or other physical connections could be
installed between devices in Area 60 and Area 0.

D. Router B could be configured as an Area Border Router
between Area 60 and Area 6.

E. This is not valid design, and no changes can make it
work.

6.Which of the following CGMP (Cisco group management protocol)

A. CGMP manages multicast traffic Catalyst 5000 series
switches by allowing directed switching of IP multicast traffic.

B. CGMP will switch IP multicast packets to all ports in
one
specific VLAN.

C. CGMP filtering requires a network connection from the
Catalyst 5000 series to a router running CGMP.

D. CGMP handles ARP, SAP, UDP, SSAP and DSAP.

Off Topic: DNS Delegation Help [7:28910]

2001-12-12 Thread Shawn Xu

We are ISP to assign different ip blocks to our customers. After subnetting
, one of our clients asks me to do Reverse DNS Delegation for his DNS. He
owns his DNS and domain name which is not our subdomain.

I think, in order to do DNS reverse delegation, the delegated domain must be
a subdomain of our domain. For example, our domain is company.com, and their
domain must be something like sales.company.com, but he is not our
subdomain. Please help to clear the concept.

Anyway, what I did is based on the attached, but it is still not working.

Please help. Thank you very much in advance.

for a point-to-point DS3. This would be between my corporate office and my
Co-location facility.

Router, Modules, Ram, CSU/DSU etc.
Thanks,

Dave

 some pretty nice stuff.

Re: Off Topic: DNS Delegation Help [7:28910]

2001-12-12 Thread Andrew Cook

You need to give the customer control of the reverse-lookups which associate
IPs with hostnames, rather than the other way around. If you are trying to
do this on a non-classful boundary, see:
http://www.menandmice.com/ONLINE%20DOCS%20AND%20FAQ/Glossary/Classless.Deleg
ation.htm
If you choose not to delegate non-classful reverses, you will have to make
the entries in your own server - much wiser to delegate, I think.

This has worked very well for us. I would also strongly recommend the
O'Reilly DNS and BIND book by Cricket Liu - if you are an ISP, you need to
know DNS cold. Of course, if you are using MS for DNS, all bets are off!

Reverse DNS is an important tool for discovering the identity of a host -
often used to check interesting log entries. Also, for certain
export-controlled software, sites will compare forward and reverse DNS
entries before allowing the download to proceed.

Andrew

RE: ethernet keepalive [7:28888]

2001-12-12 Thread Michael Williams

I did a google search on ethernet keepalive (with the quotes so it would
only find the terms together) and found:

These are ethernet keepalive packets. It is a 122 byte packet with DA=SA and
a type code of 9000.

Keepalive packets are sent out onto the ethernet, received back and compared
for correctness. It requires the ethernet to be properly terminated. cisco
uses them to keep the line protocol up. You can turn them off by doing a 'no
keepalive' command.

Re: ccboot 2 bgp AS3 challenge [7:28934]

2001-12-12 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

Icmp router discovery protocol and gateway discovery protocol. I am guessing
that maybe if this works there are 3 solutions.

IRDP is cool. It advertises out the interface you specify at intervals you
specify. On the other side you run gateway discovery protocol and it listens
for the IRDP. Once it here's the irdp it enters the ip address of the
advertising irdp as it's default gateway.

IDRP doesn't use GDP, just ICMP. GDP was a Cisco proprietary protocol
that preceded IDRP, and Cisco deprecated it -- I didn't think it was
even supported any longer.

The main operational problem with IDRP is, given its default timer
settings, discovery is very slow. Alternatives in the UNIX world
including using RIP for router discovery. IPv6 has neighbor discovery
mechanisms that will meet this need.

It's probably faster all around to have hosts get a default router
address through DHCP, and have this address be a HSRP virtual address
when there are multiple routers.

Thinking about it this morning though, I have never tried advertisements
from different interfaces to a router. I have tried advertising from 2
routers of the same ethernet and setting priority so they both end up as
defaults. I dunno if it would work but I am goin to try it when I have time.

off my head. I think this would work, I will have to put it to the test
in

IRDP on R5 GDP on R6 facing R5. IRDP on R6 facing R7 GDP on R7 facing
R6.

In the configuration of R6, there is no route to R5's ethernet.
   Therefore, R7
has no route to the next-hop router, and does not populate it's
table.
  In
   the
instructions, you are given the opportunity to add a static default
  route
   to
R5 to get the bgp routes to R7.

I found 2 other ways to accomplish this without that static default
  route,
keeping in mind that the static route solution may not be viable in
the
   lab
exam. Is anyone working that lab and would you like to take a stab
at
  it?
(all of the solutions are elegant and require very little thought)

Tuesday funnies, sort of. [7:28935]

2001-12-12 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

It's been a little tense on the list, so it seems, and I'll share
some recent experience from the lighter side.

I spent this last weekend with friends, all of whom avoided computers
as much as possible. Now, let me give some personal context. I have
never had any interest in...ummm...spawning a child process. My
closest to offspring is a Cat 1.

My friends, however, have a 3 year old. Very quickly, I was given a
demonstration of a demand circuit to which all traffic is
interesting. As I had arrived wearing a brace on my still-healing
broken foot, I also had a demonstration of collision detection when
the child process decided it was GREAT to kick.

At one point, we watched a video of Monty Python and the Meaning of
Life, confirming the networking principle that the most important
machine goes PING. We had not realized the child process was also
watching, who became fascinated by the speaking fish in the movie,
especially when Howard the Fish was eaten by one of the Pythons.

It was quickly obvious that the child process was not flow controlled
at one interface, which apparently used a new stress testing protocol
issuing continuous NOs rather than ICMP echo requests. Before long,
however, it became obvious that there were flow control problems at
an interface at the other end.

It's not looking for voltage. It's just checking to see that it can send
its own frame. The frame format is actually a loopback frame (EtherType
0x9000) from the Ethernet Configuration Testing Protocol section of the
Ethernet II standard, which was never widely adopted (except by Cisco).
Here's a capture of a keepalive frame:

Flags:0x00
   Status: 0x00
   Packet Length:64
   Timestamp:14:42:20.319000 04/26/2001
Ethernet Header
   Destination: 00:00:0C:05:3E:80
   Source: 00:00:0C:05:3E:80
   Protocol Type:0x9000
Packet Data: 46 bytes (all zeros)

Note that this is quite different from a serial keepalive which has
sequence numbers and ACKs.

RE: Looking for a CCNP [7:28907]

2001-12-12 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

Be careful of what you wish for. I'm still laughing at the thought
of just what sort of Traffic Director the (inappropriate) ad is
looking for. Springfield contains the most complex freeway
intersection in the Washington DC metro area, which is under MASSIVE
reconstruction.

Indeed, I even use the roads around Springfield in explaining weird
routing. While traveling south from DC, up to the famed Beltway, you
are on 395 South. You are presented with a routing table giving you
exits to 95/495 North, 95 South, and 495 South. The only problem is
that 95 South is exactly the same road you are on, but just changes
name. Federal highway regulations require there be an exit sign for
every new numbered Interstate, so exit 4B is right in the middle of
the road. There _is_ no turnoff. It's like your subnet changes number
somewhere in the middle.

BGP blackhole routes are simple compared to the Springfield interchanges.

Hmmm.

Wish I lived in Springfield.

RE: ethernet keepalive [7:28888]

2001-12-12 Thread Walker, Jim

Ethernet interfaces send keepalives to itself to see if the interface is
alive and
Serial interfaces send keepalives to remote end.

Keepalives are set to 5 seconds by default on Cisco. Interface will go down
after 3 missed keepalives in a row.

While I do regret the apparent NDA violation, I am going to answer
indirectly. I would have felt a lot more comfortable if, for example,
the first question is where can I learn more about early token
release.

Dear CCIEs,

I failed in the CCIE written exam today and, I recall some questions here
but can't find the correct answer. Do please help me figure out the correct
answer and give me your explain. Great thanks!

1.. In a token ring environment, what is allowed regarding early token
release?

See IEEE 802.5 and CCO.

2.What is the best description of poison reverse?

Read the very well written RIP RFC.

3.In FDD, the characteristics of !04B/5B Encoding!1 include: (multiple
answer)

I'd have to do a search for online FDDI references, because it's an
ANSI, not IEEE standard. The groupstudy archives and CCO are a good
start.

5.In reorganization, OSPF areas are realigned. Is this a valid network
design? If not, what changes could be made to the network and/or router
configurations?

See both Priscilla's Top Down Network Design and my Designing Routing
Switching Architectures, and WAN Survival Guide. Don't know how
much the CCO OSPF Design Guide really goes into design rather than
configuration.

6.Which of the following CGMP (Cisco group management protocol)
statements is correct?

See CCO.

7.Which statement about RADIUS is true?

See RADIUS RFCs and CCO.

8.Which statements about TACACS+ are true? (multiple answer)

See CCO, as well as Cisco-oriented security books. Kent, do you cover
this? I touch on it in my last two books as part of access services.

9.CGMP (Cisco Group Management Protocol) is:

Again, CCO.

10.Which of the following statements is NOT accurate regarding Frame
Relay?

See the Frame Relay Forum webpage.

11.A !.default network!/ performs a service in routing. It is used:

See my Certzone routing principles white paper and the Groupstudy
archives. I _know_ I've posted at length about this.

12.Examine the following:

If this router has a configuration-register setting of 0x102, select the
proper boot sequence:

See CCO.

1.. WAN frame formats generally have which fields in common?

Search the archives, especially on the relationships among HDLC,
SDLC, LAP-F, and LAP-B.

13.The configuration for Router A is as follows:

Debug is enabled on Router B, but no debug messages appear on the terminal.
Other commands (show commands, etc) seem to be working. What are the
probable causes for this?

See the CLI documentation.

14.What is the only feature NOT included in FastEther Channel?

See CCO, and also the IEEE 802.3 equivalent (blanking if it's .3ad or .3ac)

It's not looking for voltage. It's just checking to see that it can send
its own frame. The frame format is actually a loopback frame (EtherType
0x9000) from the Ethernet Configuration Testing Protocol section of the
Ethernet II standard, which was never widely adopted (except by Cisco).
 Here's a capture of a keepalive frame:

 Flags:0x00
Status: 0x00
Packet Length:64
Timestamp:14:42:20.319000 04/26/2001
 Ethernet Header
Destination: 00:00:0C:05:3E:80
Source: 00:00:0C:05:3E:80
Protocol Type:0x9000
Packet Data: 46 bytes (all zeros)

Note that this is quite different from a serial keepalive which has
 sequence numbers and ACKs.

RE: ADMIN to be a CCIE? [7:28911]

2001-12-12 Thread Stanford Wong

Just keep in mind that a Cert is a Cert. In two years it will expire and
you will have to recert to keep current.

A certification is basically to validate your experience, whether it was
acquired in the lab, school, or in a production network. All of this will
come into play when you apply for a job or ask for a raise.

You have to decide if you are going for the cert because of personal reasons
(like myself), or if you are looking for an increase in pay. If it is for
the later, and you expect to stay at the same job, make it known to your
employers on your intentions and see what they are willing to do in terms of
compensation/support. Then you can make your own decision whether or not to
pursue this cert.

If you plan to leave your organization in search of vast riches you may be
in for a rude awakening. Check out Dice, Monster, Headhunter, and all of
the rest of job classifieds. Determine if even after you get the CCIE cert
if the location, pay, other job specifics to see if with the CCIE you will
even have the necessary work experience to meet those job qualifications.
For about 90 percent of the jobs that require a CCIE, they will expect you
to also work on higher end switches/routers not to mention
SOLARIS/NT/LINUX/Openview/Ciscowork and the firewalls all of which you will
not have if you just played around with 6 low end routers/switches to
prepare for the CCIE.

If you are like most people, it will take around 6-18 months to get the CCIE
if you are just starting. What will the market be like in 6 to 18 months?
My CCIE tracking (from newsgroups) has come up with approximately 4-5 CCIEs
are being produced every day worldwide.  So by the time you get your CCIE;
180 - 540 more CCIEs of which about half of them are in the US would have
been certified. The salary offers has also been dropping on almost a
monthly basis.

Since I originally got my CCIE because of personal reasons, the lowering of
pay does not bother me. It may however affect others.

Good luck on your efforts, what ever it maybe.

Always remember that the CCIE is not an end, it is just a marker along your
way to the continous process of acquiring knowledge.

Stanford

BGP blackhole routes are simple compared to the Springfield
 interchanges.

 Hmmm.

 Wish I lived in Springfield.

Since this thread seems to have concluded, I won't belabour the

many cases, subspecialities. You say that you have a PhD in comp-sci,

something human interface design or something else that has nothing to
do with networking. So, saying that you have a PhD in comp-sci really
doesn't tell us anything.

As another example, somebody on one of the other mailing lists I'm

corrected him, he said that he was an Electronics Engineer and that he
should know. Electronics Engineering is a very large field, so unless
he specifically studied physical networking hardware, he wouldn't
know. Anybody that knows anything about networking knows that a hub is
a dumb multiport repeater (i.e. not much more then a signal amplifier)
and therefore can't support full-duplex connections (for that, you need
some smarts). Needless to say, he got thoroughly trounced for his
haughty attitude.

BGP and ip load-sharing [7:28960]

2001-12-12 Thread Alejandro Acosta

Hi All,
This is my first message in the list.
I am running a BGP session with a customer. It has 2 serial links with us
(Each link of 2 Mbps). The customer and me have selected per-packet sharing
in order to balanced the link.
In this moment, the traffic that comes from the customer is very simetric
in both links, however, the traffic that is sent to the customer from us is
not simetric. As far as I know (if I am not wrong), if we are using load
balacing per-packet, the incoming and outgoing traffic should be very very
similar, right?. Why only the incoming traffic is simetric in this moment.

This is the configuration for both interfaces in my router:

interface Serial2/0
 description Link 1
 bandwidth 2048
 ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
 no ip directed-broadcast
 ip load-sharing per-packet
 no ip mroute-cache
 load-interval 30
 no cdp enable
 hold-queue 1024 out
!

interface Serial2/4
 description Link number 2
 bandwidth 2048
 ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
 no ip directed-broadcast
 ip load-sharing per-packet
 no ip mroute-cache
 load-interval 30
 no fair-queue
 no cdp enable

Any ideas?

Thanks

I am a CCNA, CCDA and 3/4 CCNP have only the CIT left.
I haven't even attempted the written because I am afraid to pass and

things will settle in for me. I am not easily intimidated but our two
CCIE's are always talking like it is impossible to pass the first time
and basically playing it up like it is the most impossible thing that
you will ever do. I respect the lab, I feel that it has a difficulty
level unlike anything I have ever heard of. BUT!, I feel like, you can
pass anything if you know your stuff. The tests that I have taken so
far have had their own difficulty level and in retrospect I dont think
that they were that hard. For the amount of time that I studied, I
passed rather easily I think.
Here is a little scenario, I studied for and passed the BCRAN in a week.
I studied and passsed the BCSN in 2 weeks. I read the switching book by
karen webb (she is terrible, IMHO) 3 times then took the test 2 weeks
later. The CIT I plan on spending a month on it. Then I was gonna take
the CID which I really planned on taking my time on. Because a friend of
mine failed it twice and design test are always harder.

Subject: GroupStudy we have a problem [7:28901]

 Hey gang,

Servers database became corrupt thus preventing messages from being sent
out. It has been fixed so if you do not see your posting, please
 resend. I
have shipped more memory to InFlow. Lon has agreed to install it for us.
This should help. So by the way, the server will be down for a little
 while tomorrow :-)

The truth is we desperately need some better equipment. Currently we are
using a server I built for $500 dollars two years ago. I purchased a used
Dell Server but need to upgrade the RAID array and a few other
 things before
 putting it online.

 Take care,

 Paul

Absolutely,

CCIE is by no means the end of me, and I am not after vast riches, I

Just keep in mind that a Cert is a Cert. In two years it will expire
and
you will have to recert to keep current.

A certification is basically to validate your experience, whether it was
acquired in the lab, school, or in a production network. All of this
will
come into play when you apply for a job or ask for a raise.

You have to decide if you are going for the cert because of personal
reasons
(like myself), or if you are looking for an increase in pay. If it is
for
the later, and you expect to stay at the same job, make it known to your
employers on your intentions and see what they are willing to do in
terms of
compensation/support. Then you can make your own decision whether or not
to
pursue this cert.

If you plan to leave your organization in search of vast riches you may
be
in for a rude awakening. Check out Dice, Monster, Headhunter, and all
of
the rest of job classifieds. Determine if even after you get the CCIE
cert
if the location, pay, other job specifics to see if with the CCIE you
will
even have the necessary work experience to meet those job
qualifications.
For about 90 percent of the jobs that require a CCIE, they will expect
you
to also work on higher end switches/routers not to mention
SOLARIS/NT/LINUX/Openview/Ciscowork and the firewalls all of which you
will
not have if you just played around with 6 low end routers/switches to
prepare for the CCIE.

If you are like most people, it will take around 6-18 months to get the
CCIE
if you are just starting. What will the market be like in 6 to 18
months?
My CCIE tracking (from newsgroups) has come up with approximately 4-5
CCIEs
are being produced every day worldwide. So by the time you get your
CCIE;
180 - 540 more CCIEs of which about half of them are in the US would
have
been certified. The salary offers has also been dropping on almost a
monthly basis.

Since I originally got my CCIE because of personal reasons, the lowering
of
pay does not bother me. It may however affect others.

Good luck on your efforts, what ever it maybe.

Always remember that the CCIE is not an end, it is just a marker along
your
way to the continous process of acquiring knowledge.

2001-12-12 Thread Patrick Ramsey

IMHO, EIGRP is the better of the two. But it's also IMHO that one should
never stray from the standards. If you know without a doubt that no matter
what happens, you will stay a cisco shop, then eigrp offers more
functionallity. Remember also cisco suggests 50 routers in one area, so
proper planning needs to be done for your edge routers and core routers.

Re: BGP and ip load-sharing [7:28960]

2001-12-12 Thread MADMAN

First problem, BGP doesn't load share but with IOS you can source an
interface like a loopback, see BGP and loadsharing.

If you have two parallel paths to a single provider why are you doing
BGP??? Since you choose BGP I'll assume this is an Internet connection,
set up two default routes, ip cef global command and the configs you
have sent and you will have symetrical outgoing loadsharing.

EIGRP- easy to implement, less CPU/memory intensive than OSPF but
proprietary.

OSPF- Takes more thought, can be more CPU/memory intensive, standard.

If you running a hub and spoke environment and don't mind proprietary
protocol I would run EIGRP. Only allow default to the remotes. Real
simple, works great.

Rob,

Few questions. What routed protocols you plan to run? Just IP or
IP/IPX/AT,etc.? Any other vendor equipment other than cisco? Firewalls
running OSPF for failover? Why did you initially choose EIGRP? Does the
network design lend itself well to a backbone area? Redundant links
(including DDR) ?

I think if you can answer some of these questions, it will help the group
give you a better response.

Since this thread seems to have concluded, I won't

specialities and in
many cases, subspecialities. You say that you have a PhD in

but you didn't tell us what the topic of your thesis was or
anything

studied
something human interface design or something else that has
nothing to
do with networking. So, saying that you have a PhD in comp-

doesn't tell us anything.

As another example, somebody on one of the other
mailing lists I'm
on tried to claim that you can do full-duplex with a hub.
When people
corrected him, he said that he was an Electronics Engineer
and that he
should know. Electronics Engineering is a very large field,
so unless
he specifically studied physical networking hardware, he
wouldn't
know. Anybody that knows anything about networking knows
that a hub is
a dumb multiport repeater (i.e. not much more then a signal
amplifier)
and therefore can't support full-duplex connections (for
that, you need
some smarts). Needless to say, he got thoroughly trounced

Re: BGP and ip load-sharing [7:28960]

2001-12-12 Thread Gregg Malcolm

Dave,

I have a dumb question regarding multiple defaults. Lets say that you had a
multihomed BGP config connected to 2 different providers. Lets say that you
had 2 routers below the firewalls sourcing the default. Then take a look at
the routing tables below these 2 routers. Wouldn't nearly every routing
proto (other than RIP assuming the hop counts were the same) only list 1
default? Wouldn't it be true that outbound traffic patterns would be based
upon metrics from the routers sourcing the default? If this is true, then
it's not really load balancing. I can think of scenarios were nearly all
outbound traffic would be destined for only 1 of the 2 links. I'm sure I'm
missing something dumb, but figured it was worth asking anyway.

Gregg
MADMAN wrote in message

First problem, BGP doesn't load share but with IOS you can source an
interface like a loopback, see BGP and loadsharing.

If you have two parallel paths to a single provider why are you doing
BGP??? Since you choose BGP I'll assume this is an Internet connection,
set up two default routes, ip cef global command and the configs you
have sent and you will have symetrical outgoing loadsharing.

Re: OSPF or EIGRP [7:28966]

2001-12-12 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

Perhaps an out of the box thought, but are you running ATM just as a
convenient fast technology, or for circuit orientation/QoS? If the
latter, consider that traffic engineering extensions are being
designed for OSPF and ISIS, but I haven't seen much Cisco work on TE
for EIGRP.

The 50 router limit is very conservative, affected by the CPU power
of the routers and the stability of the links. Also, access routers
that use static/default, even floating static default, with static
redistribution at the first routers with multiple paths, don't count
against this limit.

Yes, I agree that EIGRP often is less CPU intensive than OSPF, but it
may not be an issue. For that matter, carriers routinely run 1000+
ISIS routers in an area.

-Patrick

Or you can say screw it and use static routes! : )

  Mears, Rob 12/12/01 03:54PM
Hi all,

We are in the middle of building out a new ATM network for the Core and on
the outside we are going to be running about 80 3640 or 2600. We are in a
big debate about the routing protocol, we are currently EIGRP.

I have collected lots of info off Cisco's Web site about the two but wanted
to hear it from the Engineers in the trenches.
What's your take on it? If it were you what would you run (EIGRP, OSPF) and
why?

Thanks
Rob

HSRP design [7:28982]

2001-12-12 Thread khramov

Hello

I have a design question. I have two 5505 with RSM in each that are
connected to each other with 200Mb trunk. Right now RSM of the first
switch is in VLAN 1; RSM of the second switch is in the VLAN 2.
Altogether I have about 20 VLANs. I am planning to run HSRP between
both RSMs. What would be the best way of doing it?
Here is what I think needs to happen:
1. Change the IP address of the second RSM and make it a part of VLAN 1
2. Reconfigure all VLAN
3. For even-numbered VLANs make the primary gateway RSM1
4. For odd-numbered VLANs make the primary gateway RSM 2
5. Copy the configuration for VLANs from RSM 1 to RSM 2

I do not have much experience in design so any input is more than
welcome.

Thanks,

Re: Access Lists [7:28927]

Is 165.5.x.x the range of your internal network or the range of addresses
that your dial in users are assigned to? This list says that any packet
whose source address is 165.5.x.x can be destined for anywhere. If you want
to restrict which subnets they can get to make some more lines specifying
your internal subnets. Not to insult, but dont' forget to apply it to an

RE: Access Lists [7:28927]

2001-12-12 Thread Logan, Harold

On what interface(s) is that ACL applied? The way you've written it, the
ACL permits IP traffic with a source address of 165.5.x.x, and the
second (unnecessary) line denies all other traffic. If that ACL is
applied on the interfaces that your users dial into, then it won't
accomplish much. If you're trying to filter based on destination IP
address, then the first line should be written access-list 110 permit
ip any 165.5.0.0 0.0.0.255

You Probably have to provide more information.

1. Are your users dialing into a router(Access server) or through a RAS card
on a
computer system?
2. The answer to ques1 is through a router, then is the router also the
router that
connect to the internet or you have another gateway router?
3. Then the interfaces to which you apply the the access-list also counts,
so say more
on the interfaces you have on your router and the ones you applied the
access-list
on and again in which direction (in or out)?

When I had done something similiar long time ago, employees and

access lists were applied to user via authentication on TACACs server.
I think this is what you want to do. You can also use Radius, TACACs is

RE: ADMIN to be a CCIE? [7:28911]

2001-12-12 Thread Bill Carter

Sorry, I ramble on a bit here.

Sounds to me like you can do it. The CCIE is about being able to do it. I
think the CCNP is a terrific certification. You really have to know your
stuff to pass the CCNP. Once you finish the CCNP you should be ready for
the CCIE. Use these listserv as a general guide as to the nature of the
test.

The Caslow book is great for creating a studying methodology. I think the
biggest piece of advice I can offer is to approach your study in a
methodical way. I have seen candidates using labs from ccbootcamp and
others. They cable up a lab, configure RIP/EIGRP/DLSW, recable the lab,
configure OSPF/BGP/IPX, recable the labFind a good lab design and then
use the same design for many labs. This wastes so much time just recabling.
As a side not, you don't need 12 routers in a lab for it to be a good lab.
I had 6 routers + 1 term serv and it worked great for me. If you want to
advertise 10 networks in BGP use loopback interfaces.

Here is what I did. I had 2-3 lab designs. I broke my study sessions into
weeks. 3 weeks OSPF, 1 week IS-IS, 1 week OSPF RIP/IGRP etc. Everyday,
because I was also worried about speed, I would start with blank configs. I
would map out and assign the IP addresses. Then I would say, for example,
these routers/interface are OSPF 0, these are OSPF stubs, these OSPF NSSA,
area ranges here, virtual-link there etc. Then I would just make it work.
If it didn't work I would figure out either bad design and it won't work
because of XYZ, or how do I make it work. You have to know the why's..
When all else failed I called TAC or emailed group study (Thanks to
Priscilla). At the end of the night, wr erase. I did nothing but OSPF for
about a month.

Along the way, I learned something about the difficulty/complexity of
different protocols and Routing protocols. From the routing protocol view,
nothing is harder than OSPF (BGP discussion later). Next is EIGRP, IS-IS,
then IGRP and RIP. There are a lot of bells and whistles to OSPF and you
have to understand all of them. Notice I didn't say just how to configure
them. You can count on twists being thrown in to see if you memorized
commands or in fact know how the commands work.

Redistribution is a beast you have to conquer. Caslow is great on this.
What are the problems with VLSM-FLSM? How do you get around the problems?
When do you use distribute-lists, when do you use route-maps? when do you
use summary-address? Why?

With BGP, I used CCO. With my same lad design, I used the BGP resources on
CCO and went through them. 1 night confederations, 1 night as-path
filtering etc... How is BGP different than other IP routing protocols??

IS-IS...IS-IS was developed to work with OSI at the same time OSPF was being
written for IP. The IS-IS/OSI group liked some of the ideas from the
OSPF/IP group and the OSPF/IP group liked some of the ideas from the
IS-IS/OSI group. Lots of people on groupstudy seem to be scared of IS-IS.
Like a buddy of mine said, It's just another routing protocol.

Then there is the other protocols, IPX, DLSW and in my case Appletalk, and
DECNet. Like I said earlier, everything is easier than OSPF and IP. There
has to be some method of providing addressing and some method of propagating
routing information. In the cases of IPX, Appletalk, and DLSW, there is
also a method of advertising services. Think of the similarities these
protocols have, instead of how they all seem very different. After all, IP
over ISDN and IPX over ISDN have more things a like than not a like.

Sorry for Rambling on. In summary.

1. Have a method to your studying.
2. Spend your time configuring, not recabling.
3. Understand Why it works.
4. Understand Why it doesn't work.
5. Learn where you can get answers. Books, CCO, groupstudy.
6. Learn IP/OSPF inside and out first, everything else will seem easier.

I haven't even attempted the written because I am afraid to pass and
then be unprepared for the lab and subsquently run out of time. I

things will settle in for me. I am not easily intimidated but our two
CCIE's are always talking like it is impossible to pass the first time

you will ever do. I respect the lab, I feel that it has a difficulty

far have had their own difficulty level and in retrospect I dont think

2001-12-12 Thread Logan, Harold

On what interface(s) is that ACL applied? The way you've written it, the
ACL permits IP traffic with a source address of 165.5.x.x, and the
second (unnecessary) line denies all other traffic. If that ACL is
applied on the interfaces that your users dial into, then it won't
accomplish much. If you're trying to filter based on destination IP
address, then the first line should be written access-list 110 permit
ip any 165.5.0.0 0.0.0.255

Yes. You are allowing anyone coming from 165.5.0.0 to go anywhere and

Not knowing you IP structure I would say.

RE: BGP and ip load-sharing [7:28960]

2001-12-12 Thread Dan Lockwood

In this situation it is best not to characterize BGP as a load-balancing
method. BGP is designed to choose the shortest path; the shortest AS
path, path vector routing. Therefore if most of your Internet traffic
has a shorter path to its destination via ISP A then you will see much
higher usage on that link. With BGP you can turn the 'dials' to create
an equal traffic load on each link, but it is likely that you would
introduce suboptimal routing by forcing traffic down one path and all
you will really have done is create an equal load.

Cheers,
Dan

Dave,

I have a dumb question regarding multiple defaults. Lets say that you
had a
multihomed BGP config connected to 2 different providers. Lets say that
you
had 2 routers below the firewalls sourcing the default. Then take a
look at
the routing tables below these 2 routers. Wouldn't nearly every routing
proto (other than RIP assuming the hop counts were the same) only list 1
default? Wouldn't it be true that outbound traffic patterns would be
based
upon metrics from the routers sourcing the default? If this is true,
then
it's not really load balancing. I can think of scenarios were nearly
all
outbound traffic would be destined for only 1 of the 2 links. I'm sure
I'm
missing something dumb, but figured it was worth asking anyway.

set up two default routes, ip cef global command and the configs you

Re: BGP and ip load-sharing [7:28960]

2001-12-12 Thread MADMAN

Not dumb at all, one of the tricky things in redundant links AND
redundant routers is default routing, redundancy and load sharing are
NOT good bedfellows. With two providers and two routers I generally
configure full BGP routing, IBGP between the two routers and HSRP. The
firewall behind the router defaults to the active router and that router
either forwards out it's serial or sends the packtet to the other BGP
speaking router based on it's routing table.

The question asked on this post had only one router with two serial
connections, which is why I suggested dual default routes, BGP is
unecessary overengineering.

 standby 5 timers 2 6
 standby 5 priority 100 preempt
 standby 5 ip X.X.5.253

Re: ATM circuit [7:28774]

2001-12-12 Thread Peter Whittle

Priscilla,

It depends!

There is a new facility known as AToM (Any Transport over MPLS Tunnel)
that supports ATM over an MPLS core. (If you implement the MPLS core
over Gigabit Ethernet then yes you can carry ATM over Gigabit Ethernet.)

It is used by some new generation service providers to offer ATM, Frame
Relay, and leased line services to their customers when in fact they
really only have an IP based network.

Some details of it are covered in ATM Forum AF-AIC-0178.000 August 2001.
(you can down load it from ATM Forum web site)

I also recollect seeing it on some Cisco Carrier MPLS slides. I'll try
to dig out the reference.

Try a CCO search on ATOM / looking at the MPLS ATM pages.

There is a mention of it in:

Service Provider QoS, Providing e2e Guarantees by Vijay Krishnamoorthy
(Cisco IOS Technologies Div April 2001) I'll try to find a URL for the
article.

Peter

In article , Priscilla Oppenheimer
 writes
My co-author added this statement to the book I'm working on:

an ATM virtual circuit may begin on an OC-3 fiber link, cross over to
a T3 line, pass across a Gigabit Ethernet fiber backbone, and end up going
out through an OC-12 fiber link. This may be an implementation of a single
ATM circuit, however.

Could an ATM virtual circuit really span an Ethernet backbone??

Thanks! I don't want to be one of those authors that propagates
misinformation. ;-) Seriously, some mistakes are unavoidable, but this one
seems avoidable (if it is a mistake)

I hear that argument a lot, if you never plan to use another
vendor It's really quite specious as it's not at all difficult to
cutover from routing EIGRP to OSPF or vis versa if the need arises.

Not only are Cisco's multi protocol, they are multi routing protocol
routers. To convert simply enable both protocols. Once they are both up
and running get rid of routing protocol that fell from your favor,
wallah, done.

proper planning needs to be done for your edge routers and core routers.

 Hey gang,

Servers database became corrupt thus preventing messages from being
sent
out. It has been fixed so if you do not see your posting, please
resend. I
have shipped more memory to InFlow. Lon has agreed to install it
for us.
This should help. So by the way, the server will be down for a
little
 while tomorrow :-)

The truth is we desperately need some better equipment. Currently
we are
using a server I built for $500 dollars two years ago. I purchased
a used
Dell Server but need to upgrade the RAID array and a few other
things before
 putting it online.

 Take care,

 Paul

Thanks Paul,

Please provide me with your address, and I will send you a contribution in
form of a check towards better equipment. Your list has helped me to get
where I am, and I would like to thank you for that.

Merry Christmas,

Ole

Re: point-to-point DS3 [7:28915]

2001-12-12 Thread David Titov

I was looking into a DS3 circuit which would be using the Point-to-Point
Protocol (PPP) instead of ATM. I would then need something like a 3620 with
the single port HSSI (NM-1HSSI) and some type of csu/dsu like the larscom
access t45 for example. http://www.larscom.com/micro/access_t45/index.html

I am going to look into geting a ATM DS3 so that I can use the DS3/E3 ATM
Network module in a 2600 which could save me some money.

Thanks,

Dave

Are you talking DS3 ATM or T3, I assuming not HSSI. Then what else
are you doing? You can get this connectivity in the form of an ATM
 NM-1A-T3 (3600, 2600 series) or PA's, PA-A3-T3, PA-T3 (7200, 7500, 7100,
7400). Look on CCO for more info on these to see if they fit your
requirements. None of these require external CSU, this is good:)
