[expert] perl 5.6 on MDK9
That brings me to another question Are there perl 5.6.1 rpms for mdk9??? 5.8 has some issues, particularly in the fact that it breaks some apps like SpamAssasin... I setup amavis-new and SpamAssasin on my mail servers, and they have issues if perl is 5.8. I know I could install from tarball, but I like having it all in the RPM database... (including as many of the modules I need as possible.) Is there any reason to think the 8.2 perl rpms wouldn't work?? what would break if I swapped to 5.6.1 in mdk9??? any thoughts guys?? rgds frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Theo Brinkman Sent: Thursday, 3 October 2002 12:33 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [expert] apache2 From what I've heard, a lot (most) of the 3rd party modules for Apache haven't been ported to 2.0 yet. Hi guys... Have any of you rolled out a web server using mdk9 and apache 2 (which is apparently an optional rpm from mdk) Redhat 8 mention that apache2 is their default web server.. is there a reason that MDK didn't choose it??? As long as static HTML, and mod_perl as well as php work as expected,, then apache2 would probably be fine.. but since i don't know its specifics, I figured I'd ask if anyone else had any experiance... rgds Franki Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I tried looking into proftpd a while back, but the problem with it is that it doesn't have the flexibility that wuftpd does in terms of configuration. I need to be able to define what passive ports it advertises to the outside world. For example, my /etc/ftpaccess file has the following lines in it: passive address 192.168.1.102 192.168.1.0/24 passive address 0.0.0.0/0 passive ports 0 4000 4100 This tells it to advertise itself as being an IP address of 192.168.1.102 if the incoming connection is any machine on the local home network. Coming from anywhere else, it advertises the IP address of my DSL router (I put the "" where the IP address usually goes). I have a cron job which runs every now and then to make sure I'm set with the correct IP address for the world at large, or else passive connections won't work too well... :-) This is one of the big ones for me - I need to have this. Will proftpd provide a way of doing this? Like I said, I looked into it some time ago and just couldn't find a way to set those things up. > I am glad they left it out, it sent me looking for alternatives and found a > perfect replacement! Same question as what I posed above, though: Will it allow you to configure how it advertises its IP address to a remote client for purposes of PASV mode? Re: [expert] Nvidia Gforce4
The real key it to get the .src.rpms or the tar.gz files and compile them. make sure you haven't changed the kernel src/headers from the actual kernel you are running and you should be fine. One downer is that if you do change/upgrade kernels you will have to re-compile the drivers (personal experience). [johnny-5]# rpm --rebuild [johnny-5]# cd /usr/src/RPMS/SOURCES (could be /usr/src/RPMS/RPMS I forget) // iirc [johnny-5]# rpm -ivh Its pretty easy and painless. The hard part is looking up the how-to info and that's pretty quick via google and a sharp eye. My only recommendation for using the rpms over the tar.gz files is to be able to use the rpm db to manage it as an installed package. I've heard that OpenOffice.org has a high level of interaction with Mandrake9.0. The reason why I'm asking this, is that I'm thinking about getting the Powerpack edition. [expert] wuftpd gone from ML 9? And updating in general....
I've just started doing my package upgrade from 8.2 to 9.0 (I read in the Mandrake forum where someone had done a package update first, then started it over again and did the just plain "update," and got really good results, so I'm trying that). In the list of packages, I couldn't help but notice that wuftpd is not being made available. Does anyone know any particular reasons that that package has been omitted? It's what I'm currently using, but I'd sure hate to miss a security update because the rpm won't be showing up in the 9.0 security updates normal locations on the FTP mirrors. I also noted at one point it announced that to allow upgrading, it was going to remove several packages and asked if I really wanted to do that. I said "no" at the time because I couldn't see any reason for removing those packages. Anyone at Mandrake reading this list (or anyone else, for that matter) know if I should have actally let it do so? If so, I suppose I can always start it back up with "update packages" and this time let it do that when it brings the message up. Hi, I'm trying to set up NFS here... I've noticed linuxconf is kind of f*cked up... It tries to execute "/etc/init.d/network {status|reload|start|stop}" or something, which is of course a syntax error... Anyway, so I tried it manually.. This is my /etc/exports: /home/misc 192.168.0.2(rw) now I can mount the dir from the client, but I cannot write to it, not even as root... what could be wrong here? There is no file. It is outside of the file system. You know the command: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1 It writes exactly 512 zeros to the very beginning of /dev/hda, aka, the MBR. Each partition has also 512 bytes worth of space. You would be tempted to call it the partition MBR, but in their infinite wisdom, the powers that be called them the "boot sector". So if you wuld have done: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda1 bs=512 count=1 It would have written 512 zeros to the very beginning of /dev/hda1, which would have gotten rid of the lilo that you were seeing I do believe. I also think ncftp is a good command line based ftp client. If you are looking for a decent basic gui ftp you could always use your web browser. For anonymous ftp just enter: ftp://www.system.com/ in the url bar. If a username/password is required, use: ftp:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/ and a dialog box should pop up asking you for the password. [expert] Annoying kde behaviour in LM8.2
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced an annoying feature in kde running LM 8.2. Whenever I type anything in an address/url/ location bar I get something looking like: ht|tp://|ww|w|.lin|ux|-ma|ndr|ake|.co|m Thos additional bar " | | |" really obstruct what you're typing, and typos are easy to make. [expert] Keyboard repeats characters
Hi to everyone, I recently received a Toshiba Tecra at the office, and of course I need Linux to be up and running on it. However, there is one very annoying problem: The keyboard appears to repeat characters when typing too fast. As you can imagine, this makes working with it almost impossible. I've been looking in the archives and searched in google, without a satisfying answer (one answer was a mail to Linus with some code, but that's one step too far for me). The keyboard works fine under M$ Windows (yes, I'm required to use it for professional purposes). Other information you might find interesting: Machine: Toshiba Tecra 9100 OS: Mandrake Linux 9.0 kbdrate: 10.9cps, delay=250ms I tried playing around with these numbers (up and down), but without any success. It works in no of the keyboard layouts. Thank you very much in advance... Pieter Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[expert] Wondering about 9.0 and networking
Hi List, I was wondering about something. I've seen both good and bad responses to 9.0 here on the lists, and I was wondering what others' feelings and experiences were in general with the way they found the Networking with 9.0? Specifically I mean protocols such as NFS and Samba. For my case I had a rather miserable time getting NFS from the 9.0 workstation to work correctly with the 8.2 server running on my home lan. For the most part that was my one and only problem with 9.0, albeit a weighty one since when going LinuxClient->LinuxServer I've found NFS _THE_ way to do things. Comments? Re: [expert] Western Digital Hard Drives in Linux
Hi, For what it's worth, originally I 'special-ordered' a WD 20Gig HD for my new Linux system a few years ago. (i had been dual-booting for a while.) With LM 8.0 and 8.2, I experienced intermittent segmentation faults, which sent me searching lists for possible cures. As soon as I was able, I replaced the WD with a Maxtor, and the problems ceased. Perhaps the warnings that the HD could fail prompted me to act sooner -- why risk all your data on a drive that 'might' cause problems? The cost of HDs have dropped dramatically, so it seems foolish to risk data corruption for a few bucks. The samples are not large enough to draw a scientific conclusion but in terms of incidence rates (events per drive per unit time) Maxtor seem to be the lowest. It would be neat to gather enough samples to make a good scientific judgement. Jim Tarvid On Wednesday 02 October 2002 08:43 am, J. Hi, I've moved over to mdk9.0 but am having trouble getting it all working if i have this file in my home dir as i used to: $ cat .i18n LC_TYPE=ja LANGUAGE=C LANG=ja_JP XIM=kinput2 XIM_PROGRAM=kinput2 XMODIFIERS="@im=kinput2" /etc/X11/xinit/XIM used to detect from the locale and add the XMODIFIERS env variable too, but that does not seem to work. X will not start, it stopes before the KDE screens, logs reveal nothing. I have wnn, kinput and japanese fonts installed. taking out the last 3 lines above let X start, but there is no jserver running, kterm $ kterm Warning: Actions not found: begin-conversion Anyone else got it configured yet? Re: [expert] Installing Apps in 9.0
Dear all, I have installed gcc2.96 from the CD, but it still seems to bum out! Is there any other instructions that I should be passing to the shell with './install-unix'? Like 'gcc-$(gcc2-version)' or something...?!?!? I would presume that 2.96 should be fine, as that was with 8.2 (I think!?) and this software worked fine in that. Re: [expert] Installing 9.0 on a laptop - PCMCIA problems
Hi There, Not sure if this will help, but I have a 233Mhz P1 notebook, with no matter what I tried I couldn't get the PCMCIA working with the modules that were included with mandrake 8.2 and this took me by surprise as I always had working PCMCIA working with older versions of Linux. What I discovered later was my notebook didn't like the PCMCIA drivers that were included with 2.4 Kernels. There is another source of PCMICA drivers that can be used.. I grabbed the drivers off the site http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/.. compiled them up, and it now works like a charm.
